On Wednesday, the 2023 PokerStars Players No-Limit Hold’em Championship (PSPC) saw 255 players from the 1,014-player field return to action. With the top 175 finishers making the money – a min-cash being worth $35,100 – it meant 80 players would leave empty-handed.
Among those to hit the rail before the money were Matt Berkey, Josh Arieh, reigning WSOP champ Espen Jorstad, and Survivor alum “Boston” Rob Mariano. Likewise, plenty of Platinum Pass winners bowed out early including Gonzalo Leal, Michael Goodman, Josif Spulber, and Rakesh Ramdial, who you might recall had quite the story as his wife initially thought his Platinum Pass win was a scam.
As evening set in, the money bubble finally arrived and would last for 2.5 hours.

Mauricio Ferreira Pais Bubbles PSPC
The bubble burst in Level 18 (6,000/12,000/12,000) when Mauricio Ferreira Pais had the all-in triangle in front of him as he was forced all in from the big blind. Action folded to Platinum Pass winner Omar Del Pino, in the cutoff, and he made it 25,000. The remaining active players folded to set up the all-in showdown.
Mauricio Ferreira Pais: Omar Del Pino:
Ferreira Pais was in bad shape and would need a miracle following the flop. Del Pino then filled up on the turn to lock up the hand. The river completed the board and confirmed Ferreira Pais as the unfortunate bubble boy.
The bubble has burst!

Huge Triple Up for Platinum Pass Winner
One man who was intent on making the money was Canadian highway worker Glen Craigen, who won his Platinum Pass while at work in spectacular fashion – while on duty at work via a freeroll opportunity.
In Level 16 (4,000/8,000/8,000), Craigen moved all in for 133,000 from the cutoff before Frederic Normand rejammed for 192,000 from the button. Rayan Chamas, then counted out his stack from the small blind, he pondered over his options and decided to call.
Glen Craigen: Frederic Normand: Rayan Chamas:
Craigen was dominated and in really bad shape until he paired his jack on the flop. The Canadian had his phone out and was recording the runout as he was now the favorite to scoop in the 415,000 main pot. The turn and river completed the board and Craigen scooped in the pot.
“This is a dream come true,” said the Platinum Pass winner, who was visibly shaking. With an above-average stack, he was in a very good place to make the money, which he eventually did.
Craigen’s journey to The Bahamas is an emotional one and he relayed how he got to PSPC with PokerNews, which you can check out below.
Death by Qauds Again for Conniff
In Level 17 (5,000/10,000/10,000), Asher Conniff was down to around 80,000 chips and he moved all in from the cutoff. Armin Rezaei woke up with a reasonable holding in the big blind and called to put Conniff at risk.
Asher Conniff: Armin Rezaei:
The flop fell and Rezaei flopped quads to leave Conniff nearly drawing dead. The on the turn confirmed his fate and Conniff headed to the rail.
Conniff was also eliminated by quads at the WSOP Main Event, final table but this time he left empty-handed.
Calum has been a part of the PokerNews team since September 2021 after working in the UK energy sector. He played his first hand of poker in 2017 and immediately fell in love with the game. Calum’s proudest poker achievement is winning the only tournament he has ever played in Las Vegas, the prestigious $60 Flamingo evening event.

The new channel, launched by ARC and its recently-acquired subsidiary, is called ARC Media International (AMI) and is centered on broadcasts of live racing content.
AMI and Vermantia Leverage CAP to Launch a New Channel
The content on AMI will include flat and national hunt races broadcast live from ARC’s sixteen racecourses, as well as from a selection of independent tracks. The channel’s live content is expected to feature as many as 700 annual fixtures from famous tracks, including Ascot, Doncaster and Lingfield Park.
Vermantia’s Complex Automated Production (CAP) service, a unique proprietary solution that automates complex actions in a remote way, will be employed in the operations of the AMI channel. As reported by Vermantia, its in-house system blends rich racing and betting information that is communicated to customers through appealing graphics. Fans are further engaged by live racing commentators and analysts that provide tips to the passionate viewers and bettors.
ARC and Vermantia wasted no time rolling out the channel in many major sports betting markets. The service is already live across many notable operators in Europe, the United States and South Africa. Thanks to the aforementioned CAP service, the channel can be quickly implemented into any retail sportsbook in the world.
AMI Is a Great Tote Betting Service
Menelaos Ladopoulos, the chief technology officer of Vermantia, commented on the agreement. He noted that his team is committed to producing best-in-class technology and is glad to provide operators with a comprehensive racing service for Tote betting.
We are always in line with the growing demand from the market for premium quality and fast-paced racing, which is powered with a fully automated service and zero-hassle for the operator, making it the most complete offering of its kind worldwide.
Menelaos Ladopoulos, CTO, Vermantia
Meanwhile, Mark Kingston, Arena Racing Company’s director of media and technology, said that the AMI channel seeks to be a premium betting channel at an international level. He noted that the new service is a well-rounded blend of quality racing content, reliable betting data, fresh design and cutting-edge automation tech.
Its success has been seen from the beginning, being already adopted by multiple influential operators in the US, Europe, and South Africa.
Mark Kingston, director of media and tech, ARC
True to Kingston’s words, the channel is already available with certain operators, which have so far been content by the service. One of these satisfied customers is Woodbine Entertainment, which praised the channel for its flawlessness.
The company reported rising interest in its products during the first three rounds of the National Football League Playoffs. It also noted that some of its niche markets have been very active, with one of the biggest markets being the “Who will score a touchdown on this drive?” bet.
Many Were Interested in Micro-betting
The market offers nine selections to punters, including QB, RB1, RB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE and “other player”, as well as a “no touchdown” option. During the first three rounds of the playoffs, interest in these products increased substantially. For reference, 65 touchdowns were scored during the twelve games of the rounds.
The market recorded $1.5 million in betting handle during the aforementioned period, emphasizing the popularity of this offering. According to statistics provided by the B2B company, 26% of the clients of its partnering operators placed at least one wager on this market.
Other drive-focused markets people were interested in included Simplebet’s unique Script market. This market had payers guessing whether the play will be a run or pass and if the play results in a first down or not. The Script market was almost as popular, recording a handle of $1.3 million.
The last niche market Simplebet noted as a successful one was the “will this kickoff result in a touchback” market. According to the provider, fans adored the instant gratification aspect of this offering.
Fans Adored the Instant Gratification Aspect of Micro Bets
Simplebet’s co-founder and chief executive officer, Chris Bevilacqua, commented on the markets’ success, calling January a “banner month” for his company.
He noted that the College Football National Championship Game ensured a strong start of the year for the micro-betting specialist. The NFL Playoffs, meanwhile, kicked off with a bang and created a momentum that was maintained throughout the three rounds.
We saw an incredible amount of action on our highly detailed markets, and with points being scored seemingly every drive, more and more bettors wanted a piece of the action, and our markets proved to have the most uptime for the ordinary bettor who is looking for instant gratification.
Chris Bevilacqua, CEO, Simplebet
Bevilacqua added that the amount of traffic his team saw from some of its biggest partners, including industry-leading companies such as Caesars Entertainment and bet365, is a testament to the success of these offerings.
Simplebet offers exciting micro-betting products for some of the most popular sporting leagues. The company is popular not only for its products but also for its commitment to integrity, which saw it join the IBIA a few days ago.

ClubsNSW decided to part ways with its chief executive officer Josh Landis following his controversial comments about New South Wales (NSW) Premier Dominic Perrottet’s religious beliefs and chief advocate for the Centre for Gambling Reform, Tim Costello, believes it was the right decision.
Decision Was Appropriate
Landis, who was sacked on Tuesday, told the Sydney Morning Herald that the Premier was acting merely on his “conservative Catholic gut” when advocating for the gambling reforms, an issue he has “very little understanding” for.
“I think they’ve made the right decision in sacking Josh,” Costello told Sky News Australia on Wednesday, backing Perrottet’s “unwavering commitment” to reforming the sector and increasing the level of protection for the vulnerable.
Costello claimed that Landis, who was among those who have heavily criticized the Premier over cashless gaming cards in the past two months, has done so while dismissing all evidence that suggested the need for cashless gaming as a problem gambling tool, including two Productivity Commission reports.
Support for Cashless Cards
NSW Crime Commissioner Michael Barnes was among the first to advocate for the cashless gaming card solution, citing evidence from the Report into Money Laundering via EGMs in Pubs and Clubs and urging MPs to introduce cashless transactions for electronic gaming machines.
Later on, cashless gaming cards received the support of NSW Police Commissioner, Karen Webb, who said that tougher measures would be necessary if authorities want to stop dirty money from flowing throughout the state’s pokies machines.
Earlier in January, Unions NSW leader Mark Morey also backed the introduction of cashless gaming cards as a problem gambling tool and urged Labor to support the reform before the state election in March 2023.
Apology Did not Save the Day
Perrottet, who has committed to reforming the gaming industry by introducing cashless poker machines and a ban on political donations from pubs and clubs, reacted to Landis’ comments, calling them “incredibly inappropriate and offensive,” arguing that he was pursuing a harder line out of his belief that it was “the right thing to do,” not his Catholic religion. The Premier also stated that such comments should merit a resignation the next morning.
Landis issued an apology for his words, claiming that he had misspoken while answering the question and should have not made reference to the Premier’s religion. He also added that “this was not a premeditated comment or an intentional attack on the Premier personally” but the apology could not save his position at ClubsNSW.
While the 2023 PokerStars Players No-Limit Hold’em Championship (PSPC) is currently underway in the Bahamas, the online edition recently wrapped up for players in Pennsylvania, as well as the merged market of Michigan and New Jersey.
The online series marked the first major festival for the merged market, which launched back on January 1 and instantly became the largest online poker market in the United States.
“We set the bar pretty high, we put $2.5 million guarantees for the merge liquidity and even $1.5 on Pennsylvania, those were our biggest guarantees, like ever,” said PokerStars Managing Director for North America Severin Rasset. “We’re quite ambitious. It’s always a bit scary when you do that. You just hope that the players are gonna like what you’re proposing, and you have no reference point, you know because you just managed liquidity and you don’t know exactly what’s going to be the outcome.”
By PokerNews’ calculations, the PSPC Online in Pennsylvania catered to a combined 33,724 entrants over 72 events while awarding $1,499,000 in prize money, meaning they missed the overall guarantee for the series by just $1,000!
As for the merged MI/NJ series, which was comprised of 85 events, they drew 46,215 entries and awarded $2,976,930 in prize money, well above the $2.5 million in guarantees. All told, both series had 79,939 entries and awarded $4,475,930 in prize money.
Rasset continued: “We’re super happy with the outcome. Most of the tournaments cleared the guarantees easily … We set ambitious guarantees and overall, for us it was a massive success. It’s also the kind of thing to bring the excitement back as it’s important for players to really enjoy what we have.”

Shares of Macau casino operators posted gains of between 3% and 5% after official data released by the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China’s government revealed that gambling revenue in January nearly doubled.
Substantial Revenue Increase
Macau casinos generated MOP11.58 billion ($1.44 billion) in gross revenue in the first month of 2023 to post an increase of 82.5% from MOP6.34 billion ($786.16 million) in January 2022 and send a note of optimism among executives and analysts following the gambling industry in the SAR that it is the beginning of a solid recovery.
The result was influenced by the rise in visitations during the week-long Lunar New Year holiday as nearly half a million people arrived in the SAR, in contrast to the disappointment from the weak visitation numbers during the three-day New Year’s holiday last month when international arrivals plunged between 33% and 42% when compared to their respective days in the year before.
Despite registering the largest crowds in more than three years, the SAR’s gambling revenue was still behind pre-pandemic levels, posting less than a half compared to the Lunar New Year’s holiday in 2019 but investors reacted positively to the news with the expectation that this is the beginning of a solid rebound.
Another factor that contributed to the January numbers was the removal of testing requirements for inbound travelers from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on January 8 which led to a resurgence of tourists from the mainland.
The casino industry in the SAR was severely impacted by the zero-COVID policy implemented by the Chinese authorities in 2019, and the attack on junket operators following the arrest of Suncity CEO Alvin Chau which continues to weigh on the impetus for junket operations, leading to their numbers continuing to decline. Recently, a court in Macau sentenced Chau to 18 years in prison.
Commencing New Concession Deals
January was the first month for the new contracts for Macau’s concessionaires – Sands China, Wynn Macau, MGM China, Galaxy Entertainment, Melco Resorts, and SJM Holdings – following the signing of the new 10-year contracts in mid-December which authorized the casino operators to legally offer games of fortune until the end of 2033.
As part of the new concession deals, casino operators agreed to pay a new fee to the government based on the size of their casino floors, despite the plunge in their revenues in 2022 when Macau registered 50% less year-over-year, one of its worst revenue performances on record.
Casinos also committed to investing a total of $15 billion, 90% of which should be invested in non-gaming facilities such as water parks, health and wellness centers, art exhibitions, garden attractions, and others.
Design Works Gaming, a developer of top-performing casino titles, has once again disrupted iGaming with its new product line. The provider’s LuckyTap series seeks to depart from the hackneyed symbol-matching mechanics in traditional games and introduce a brand-new genre.
DWG Disrupts iGaming with Innovative Experiences
As announced by DWG, the LuckyTap games are a product that has been designed to resonate with the needs of contemporary audiences. LuckyTap, according to the studio, is “the future of gambling.”
The games of the series are started with a simple tap, after which the players can enjoy a plethora of polished animations, unique and innovative mechanics and relevant themes. Because of this, the LuckyTap games are poised to appeal to customers of all genders and ages.
The chief executive officer of DWG, Troy Zurawski, slammed the lack of innovation in the industry. He noted that most of the content in the last few decades has been derivative in nature. DWG, however, seeks to change that and stray away from established gambling models.
We’ve removed dice, cards, balls and matching models and transitioned into success-driven mechanics. Did I win or did I lose? This has allowed us to cut through a huge learning curve that exists in most gambling games, leaving room for more enjoyment and excitement.
Troy Zurawski, CEO, DWG
Zurawski concluded that no matter the theme of the game, LuckyTap makes it very clear to players how to win and how much they can win. Unlike its competitor titles, LuckyTap games do not make use of a complicated paytable that confuses players.
DWG Prefers Simplicity Over Complexity
DWG said that its innovative titles were based on deep research on game design, human behaviors, player impulses and game data. All these principles are applied when making LuckyTap titles.
Dustin Bozovich, DWG’s game design manager said that when he first started his career, games were far too complicated. Despite that, according to his observation of the industry, players really cared about winning or losing. Because of that, DWG decided to cut out the unnecessary mechanics and avoid player confusion.
DWG noted that LuckyTap prioritizes simplicity over complexity. It is built upon intuitive mechanics that can be easily understood by players. This way even people who don’t like slots can enjoy the LuckyTap content.
DWG has released 30 LuckyTap games so far and is planning to release 15 more within the next twelve months. The studio has existing agreements with many major operators in the United States and the United Kingdom and is in talks with additional major brands.
The international, members-only organization that reunites state-authorized lotteries, suppliers, and sportsbooks was “delighted” to welcome GeoComply to the family. The World Lottery Association’s (WLA) executive director Luca Esposito spoke about the geolocation and fraud prevention company’s capacity to help promote a more responsible gaming industry.

GeoComply supplies a variety of markets with advanced geolocation anti-fraud solutions in numerous industries.
