Some Roulette Thoughts – Gambling With An Edge

Some Roulette Thoughts - Gambling With An Edge

This post is syndicated by the Las Vegas Advisor for the 888 casino group. Anthony Curtis comments on the 888 article introduced and linked to on this page.

A. C. says: This article provides a good overview of the different versions of roulette and its betting options. Not mentioned is the new trend toward triple-zero wheels, which raises the casino edge from 5.26% on the double-zero to 7.69%. The two versions are often available side-by-side in a casino, and it’s not uncommon to see an equal number of players at each. Assuming the limits are the same for both, there’s no reason to choose the triple-zero wheel. The “suicide” bet referenced in the article is also known as the “basket bet,” or simply the “five numbers bet,” and has a house edge of 7.89%. Aside from avoiding the bad options, there’s not much to talk about in the way of roulette strategy. Author Frank Scoblete hits on the most important consideration, which is to slow the game down (limiting your exposure to the house edge) by playing at crowded tables.

This article was written by Frank Scoblete in association with 888casino.

Some Roulette Thoughts

Roulette is probably the oldest casino game. It was invented by Blaise Pascal in his search for a perpetual motion machine in the 1600s. He didn’t discover the machine but he did give us a game that has thrilled and annoyed players since that time.

True, soldiers throughout history have spun their shields either to discern what the gods wanted them to do to yonder village, town or city or to beat their fellow soldiers in a game of sorts. Roulette comes from that tradition. Still, we have Blaise to thank for the casino version of it that we play today.

Roulette is just a spinning wheel with red and black colored numbers on it, running from 1-36, along with one or two zeroes as well. These one or two zeroes can be green.

There are two types of roulette games, the American roulette (two zero numbers – 0 and 00) and the European roulette the (one zero – 0). Both games have the numbers 1-36.

Which game is better?

Danish Gambling Regulator Reports Increased GGR in Q4 2022

Danish Gambling Regulator Reports Increased GGR in Q4 2022

The latest financial results report from the Danish gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden highlighted that the overall gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the betting, online casino, slot machine, and physical casino sectors amounted to DKK 1.8 billion ($254.9 million) in Q4 2022, which represents a 4.5% increase compared to Q4 2021.

The report also noted that all four gaming areas saw growth in gross gaming revenue (GGR) during Q4 2022. This can be attributed to the fact that the gaming halls and physical casinos were not impacted by Covid-19 restrictions in this quarter, unlike Q4 2021.

Online casinos contributed the most to the overall increase with a boost of 6.5% year-on-year. This means that GGR increased from DKK 723 million ($104.6 million) in Q4 2021 to DKK 770 million ($111 million) in Q4 2022.

In second place came retail casinos, which experienced an increase in GGR of 5.9% for the fourth quarter of 2022 when compared to the same period last year. This corresponded to a rise of DKK 5 million ($722,995) to DKK 89 million ($12.9 million) in Q4 2022.

Sports betting was actually the sector that experienced the least growth in the last quarter of 2022 with only a 2.5% increase year-on-year. Still, the sector reported solid numbers with GGR of DKK 607 million ($87.8 million).

FY 2022 GGR Was Also on the Rise

As reported by Spillemyndigheden at the end of January, the combined GGR for sports betting, online casino, slot machines, and physical casino sectors in 2022 reached DKK 6.7 billion ($969 million), with year-over-year growth of 7.5%. However, considering the impact of Covid-19 restrictions, the real-term increase in GGR was only 0.2% from 2021 to 2022.

The online casino industry saw only a slight increase of 2.4%, bringing in DKK 2.88 billion ($420.4 million), while the sports betting sector experienced a decline of 4.1% with a total of DKK 2.32 billion ($338.7 million).

However, the retail sector flourished with remarkable gains of 59.1% and 47.5% respectively for land-based casinos and slot machines, yielding a total of DKK 349 million ($50.95 million) and DKK 1.15 billion ($168.5 million). This can also be attributed to the removal of COVID restrictions.

It is important to note that moving forward Spillemyndigheden will switch from quarterly to monthly reporting, starting with the figures for 2023, which are expected to be released in early March.

David Kaye “Blown Away” by Impact of PokerStars US Player Pool Merging

David Kaye "Blown Away" by Impact of PokerStars US Player Pool Merging

It was barely a month into his time as a PokerStars Ambassador that David Kaye was met by the biggest PokerStars news story to come out of the United States in a number of years.

The announcement that the player pools in Michigan and New Jersey were to merge was met by an overwhelmingly positive response, and as Kaye attests the impact on the online tables has been a noticeable one.

The Importance of a Regulated Market

“It’s been a huge change,” he told PokerNews. “Shared liquidity is just a huge deal in America and for PokerStars players in Michigan and New Jersey. There are more games running, tournament prize pools are bigger and there are bigger guarantees.

“A lot of Michiganders and people in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, just love playing on PokerStars US and it’s important to them that they have a good regulated market with safe games to play. I’m excited to be part of that, to keep growing it and moving forward.”

Kaye Appreciated as a PokerStars Ambassador

Joining in November 2022, Kaye said that the way PokerStars went about recruiting him was very natural and he’s enjoyed his time as an Ambassador so far.

“The process has been amazing,” Kaye told PokerNews two months on from joining Team PokerStars. “The thing that really impressed me was that PokerStars wasn’t trying to make me sell myself to them.

“Instead, it was them telling me how much they really liked what I did. The fact they were very clear and clearly appreciated and respected what I do, I mean obviously coming from PokerStars that was just very cool.”

Top Stories of 2022, #9: Michigan Matures, Ontario Launches, and is Texas in Trouble?

As an Ambassador, Kaye hopes to inspire not just players in Michigan but across the United States, and he’s already noticed how re-energized players from far and wide are through the merging of the player pools.

“Combining the players [in Michigan and New Jersey] wasn’t just great for those already playing, it got others re-energized about the new numbers that we were seeing. People want to play in big tournaments with big guarantees, and people were just excited about the number of players that were active.

“Not only that, but as an American, I obviously noticed and follow the legislative landscape a bit more than most, but it’s been really exciting to see players from Pennsylvania asking when they’re gonna merge, or people from other states like New York and Illinois asking when they’re gonna get in.”

Momentum and a Bright Future for PokerStars US?

With momentum going in the right direction, at least according to Kaye, he can’t help but imagine how bright the future can be for players on PokerStars US.

“Just imagine if we can get even 20% of the states into one player pool I just think it’s going to be incredible”

“It’s just been really cool to see online poker flourishing in America. There are just so many games running at all different stakes. And this is just with two out of 50 states. Just imagine if we can get even 20% of the states into one player pool I just think it’s going to be incredible.

“We know the end goal isn’t just two states. Two states is great, but this is just the groundwork to get where we really want to be when we have all the states under one umbrella — or as many states as possible!

“We’re working our way back! The merge of the markets in Michigan and New Jersey — which is where I play — it’s just very exciting times. And hopefully, more states get legalized in the coming years and hopefully get them into one player pool.

“Blown Away” by Michigan Numbers

Michigan has grown into the largest regulated poker pool in the US, and the merger has only helped that to grow even further.

“People have heard of PokerStars, they know the reputation, and they know that they’re looking out for the players’ best interests”

“Even before the merge happened between Michigan and New Jersey, I was blown away by the number of games we had in Michigan. With the sheer number of players playing the cash games and tournaments and the interaction and excitement on social media, I’ve genuinely been blown away.

“I think that there’s so much potential and there are so many exciting things going forward in this new wave of online poker in the US and especially the brand recognition. PokerStars brings a lot of real validity to online poker across America.

“People have heard of PokerStars, they know the reputation, and they know that they’re looking out for the players’ best interests. So I think overall, that hopefully sets up good things further down the road.”

Is Poker legal in Michigan? Online Poker Laws in Michigan Explained

Kaye says he does feel a certain amount of responsibility to help shape the future of PokerStars in the United States, but he’s unequivocal in the fact that the way forward is for more player pool mergers to happen.

“It’s all about me playing my part in educating people and sharing the huge positives that can come from having these state-regulated markets. That’s the biggest point to get across. Yes, a state might have legally regulated online poker, but the really important thing is merging the player pool. Michigan and New Jersey starting that off is just such an important first step, and we’ll really see the benefits down the road in the medium to long term.

“Even now, it’s super exciting now, but in the medium to long-term, this is really big news and it has me excited and optimistic for the future.”

Niagara Resorts behind Mohegan’s Strong Fiscal Q1 2023

Niagara Resorts behind Mohegan’s Strong Fiscal Q1 2023

Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority published its financial results for the first fiscal quarter of 2023 posting strong growth in income from operations on the back of a marginal increase in revenue.

Overview of the Performance

Over the three months ended December 31, 2022, Mohegan generated net revenue of $406.62 million mainly due to the strong performance at its Niagara Resorts which managed to more than offset the setbacks at Mohegan Sun and Mohegan Pennsylvania. Compared to the net revenue figure in the first fiscal quarter of 2022, the net revenue represents a marginal increase of 1.2%.

What is more impressive is that from relatively the same net revenue ($401.96 million in the fiscal Q1 2022), Mohegan ended the fiscal Q1 2023 with nearly twice as much net income, $70.23 million, as compared to $35.19 million in the fiscal Q1 2022, or up 99.5%. Net income attributable to Mohegan for the period stood at $807,000 to reverse a net loss of $11.68 million in the fiscal Q1 2022.

Raymond Pineault, chief executive officer of Mohegan, attributed the financial results to Mohegan’s diversification strategy which enabled the company to cope with macroeconomic headwinds and come out with positive results.

“Our consolidated Adjusted EBITDA of $101.1 million continues our trend of strong performance [and] our diversification strategy and continued focus on profitability have enabled Mohegan to offset some of the inflationary and labor pressures and achieve these strong results,” he said.

Adjusted EBITDA in the quarter was up 3.8% when compared to the adjusted EBITDA in the fiscal Q1 2022 of $97.4 million. Across Mohegan properties, adjusted EBITDA varied from negative 16.7% at Mohegan Pennsylvania to positive 8.7% for Niagara Resorts. Mohegan Sun also registered negative EBITDA.

Across the Properties

The tribe’s home state property, Mohegan Sun, registered net revenues of $239.4 million, down 4.8% from $251.57 million in the fiscal Q1 2022. Mohegan attributed the result to declines in slot and table games revenues, while also accounting for the positive impact in the previous comparable period from the property’s 25th-anniversary celebration and the negative impact of slot and table hold, as well as the weather in the reported quarter.

The figures at Mohegan Pennsylvania were similar as net revenues fell to $59.78 million, down 6.9% from $64.22 million, due to poor weather which resulted in lower gaming volumes and lower table games hold percentage.

At Niagara Resorts, net revenues increased by 17.8% to $74 million due to high gaming volumes and a substantial increase in non-gaming revenues. The opening of the 5,000-seat OLG Stage entertainment venue and the lack of operating restrictions during the quarter also contributed to the result.

Huge Crowds Expected for the 2023 Tampa Poker Classic

Huge Crowds Expected for the 2023 Tampa Poker Classic

Anyone looking for some high-octane poker action should look at the upcoming 2023 Tampa Poker Classic. Held at the famous Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa, Florida, the 2023 Tampa Poker Classic builds on a hugely successful 2022 edition, which saw guarantees blown out of the water.

The 2023 Tampa Poker Classic takes place between March 8-20, precisely a year after the 2022 version. Events have buy-ins ranging from $400 to $1,700, and guaranteed prize pools weighing in from $10,000 up to a whopping $500,000, the latter reserved for the eagerly anticipated $1,700 Championship Event.

A $400 buy-in $250,000 guaranteed Deep Stack event kicks off the 2023 Tampa Poker Classic in style. This re-entry tournament features six Day 1s between March 8-11, with the final day running on March 12. Last year, a similarly-sized event got the festival underway. Some 1,463 players turned out in force and created a $490,105 prize pool, more than double the size of the advertised guarantee. George Allen emerged victoriously that day, taking home $63,071 after a four-way deal.

The popular $1,100 buy-in One Day Challenge returns with a $50,000 guarantee on its prize pool. Like the opening event of 2022, last year’s $1,100 One Day Challenge smashed its $50,000 guarantee thanks to 177 players buying in and creating a $171,690 pot. The United Kingdom’s Stuart Taylor and Pasquale Hudson of New York, USA, chopped when heads-up, and both collected $38,395.

$500,000 Guaranteed Championship Event

Paul Snead
Reigning Main Event champion Paul Snead

$500,000 is guaranteed to be won in the 2023 Tampa Poker Classic Championship Event, which runs from March 16-20. The Championship Event costs $1,700 to enter, has a trio of starting flights, and will almost certainly obliterate the guarantee.

Championship Event players sit down with a generous helping of 40,000 chips and play eight-handed (nine-handed on the final table) to a 40-minute clock on each Day 1, with levels extending to 60 minutes on Day 2 and 3. Unlimited re-entries are permitted until the start of Level 10 on each flight, and the tournament operates a “Best Stack Forward” policy if you progress from more than one of the start days.

Last year’s Championship Event commanded a larger $2,500 buy-in, but the $500,000 guarantee remained the same. Some 440 players bought in, and 55 of those starters bagged a slice of the $990,000 prize pool. Paul Snead of New York is the reigning champion after he received the $198,150 top prize, resigning runner-up Bryce McVay of Tampa, Florida, to the $132,095 consolation prize. Expect similar payouts in 2023 thanks to the more affordable buy-in and the many satellites feeding into the Championship Event.

New Jersey Online Poker Revenue was Down in 2022 But Better than Pre-COVID

New Jersey Online Poker Revenue was Down in 2022 But Better than Pre-COVID

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) released the complete online poker revenue results from 2022, and they show an 8.5% decline year-over-year. But that isn’t cause for concern nor should it be viewed as a downward trend for the industry.

Instead, it was simply a return to normalcy for online poker in the Garden State coming down from the COVID boom.

Back in 2020, starting with March when casinos were shut down, the state generated a record $3.6 million in revenue from its three New Jersey poker operators. The following two months were even better, reaching as high as $5.1 million in April 2020 and $4.8 million in July before leveling off to figures that were closer to previous years to close out the year.

In 2021, as more live poker rooms began to reopen in Atlantic City and in neighboring states (Pennsylvania, mostly), online poker revenue was still a bit higher than pre-COVID figures, with most months in the $2.3 million to $2.4 million range. For the year, the seven legal poker sites generated a combined $29,923,710 in revenue, the best overall year, excluding 2020, since internet poker was legalized in 2013.

How 2022 New Jersey Online Poker Compared to 2021

There are three poker operators with a combined seven poker sites licensed to operate in New Jersey — Borgata (Partypoker, BetMGM, PalaPoker, Borgata Poker), Resorts Atlantic City (PokerStars), and Caesars Atlantic City (WSOP, 888poker).

Each of the three poker operators generates a solid amount of revenue, exceeding $500,000 monthly, with Caesars reaching close to the $1 million mark during the World Series of Poker due to hosting online bracelet events.

In 2022, New Jersey online poker revenue hit $27,374,502, down approximately 8.5% compared to 2021 ($2,549,208). That’s not so bad when you consider live poker was mostly back to full strength in 2022.

When compared to 2019, pre-COVID, 2022’s revenue was more than a 30% improvement. The largest drop-off year-over-year when comparing 2022 to 2021 results was July, which saw a 25.9% decline. But that was almost certainly due to the 13 online bracelet events hosted last summer in New Jersey. The full month-by-month comparison is below.

Wind Creek Hospitality Expands in Florida by Acquiring Magic City Casino

Wind Creek Hospitality Expands in Florida by Acquiring Magic City Casino

The announcement has come after the Florida Gaming Control Commission has given the green light for the transfer of all assets and gaming licenses held by the casino’s current owners to the authority of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. The latter is the only Indian Tribe in Alabama recognized by the federal authorities.

More Expansion Opportunities

According to the newly inked agreement, Wind Creek Hospitality’s wholly-owned subsidiary Gretna Racing, LLC will be extending its presence in another big metropolitan area in the US by penetrating the Miami, Florida market with its land-based games.

Wind Creek parent Poarch Band of Creek Indians’ chief executive officer and tribal Stephanie Bryan called their expansion in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Florida in recent news will bring the tribe more growth chances. Bryan also spoke about their excitement to become a “valued partner in the Miami community.”

Thanks to the fresh brick-and-mortar facility in Miami, Wind Creek Hospitality will enjoy the perks of joining a “new and vibrant market”.

What the Future Holds

The organization that manages the tribe’s gaming facilities has announced that it will not disrupt operations at Magic City Casino in the near future. At the same time, they announced they would make a few changes to the venue. Among them, is the inclusion of Magic City players in the Wind Creek Rewards and Express Offers loyalty programs by the end of the current year.

As stated by Wind Creek’s chief executive officer and president Jay Dorris, Southern Florida is naturally connected to their properties in the Florida Panhandle, Aruba & Curacao, and Alabama. Dorris added that the casino’s location next to the International Airport in Miami turns it into an excellent place for players at all Wind Creek properties.
