ICE 2023 Breaks Attendance Record with Over 40,000 Visitors in London

ICE 2023 Breaks Attendance Record with Over 40,000 Visitors in London

The much-anticipated event that made a spectacular return on February 7-9 at ExCeL London reunited 40,000 visitors, representatives and pioneers of the gaming industry.

The best game distributors, developers, retailers, operators, trade associations, innovators, regulators and strategic organizations all showed a massive interest in taking part in the “most comprehensive and ROI-friendly networking, business and learning experience”.

Raising the Bar for the Gaming Industry in 2023

Once again, the main goal of the event was to raise the bar for the international gaming industry in the new year. Accordingly, the three full days of intense networking and educational workshops were attended by a newly established record number of visitors when compared to the last ICE event organized prior to the start of the pandemic in 2020. Then, 36,000 unique attendees were recorded at the ICE event. In April 2022, the scaled-down version of ICE ushered in 24,000 participants who explored their favorite casino and games and sports betting areas.

Just like last year, this year’s participants were given premier access to the industry’s latest, mesmerizing technology, and professional insights, along with the latest regulatory news. All this information helped attendees come across brand new ideas, expand their network for the benefit of their business, and reposition their brands in fresher and more seasoned markets over the course of the following months leading to December.

Clarion Gaming’s managing director Stuart Hunter explained that while the data should be checked by independent auditors, they remain confident that the event managed to break through the “40,000 high point” and set a new record in terms of visitors.

79,000 Return Visits at the ICE London 2023

Hunter added that the number of visitor days, which is a measure of attendees’ return visits, reached 79,000. He called both numbers truly significant figures that showcase the magnitude and high value of the ICE experience as it is perceived by visitors.

Around half of ICE 2023 attendees operated in both brick-and-mortar and online venues, while 50% were exclusively focused on online operations. Some 20,000 of this year’s attendees showed an interest in the Casino and Games booths, while Sports Betting was the main area of operation for 13,000 visitors.

The ongoing attention given to the Payments sector was also visible through the 5,000 visitors that explained Payments represented their main point of focus and the primary reason why they attended the event in the first place.

ICE VOX Was a Sold Out Stand-Out

ICE VOX, which was held between February 5-8 was a stand-out program that managed to sell all its tickets for the first time in history. The signature content program of the international gaming community delivered exclusive content and an overall ICE experience that was a lot easier to understand and match with visitors’ schedules.

It ran two different world-leading conferences: the World Regulatory Briefing and the International Casino Conference. It also ran four in-depth masterclasses: iGaming Masterclass, Safer Gambling Masterclass, Modernizing Lotteries Masterclass, and New Markets Masterclass.

This year, ICE helped raise $63,798 for tackling gambling harm and promoting safer gambling. The money will reach four recipients interested in protecting customers from gambling harm in their countries.

A.C. says: This article was written by Bob Dancer. Nuff said with regard to its accuracy. It was written in 2016, but the information is timeless, with the exception of the recommendation for using the Video Poker for Winners software, which is no longer available; other tutoring products are, however. These are just five basic tips, but they’re important and there are some good nuggets included, e.g., when to keep two pair in Deuces Wild. These concepts are taken much further in Dancer’s book, Video Poker for the Intelligent Beginner.

Detroit Casinos See Betting Decline, Gaming Revenue Soar

Detroit Casinos See Betting Decline, Gaming Revenue Soar

The gambling regulator in the state, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), announced that the three casinos in Detroit reported a total of $103.5 million in monthly aggregate revenue last month. This result, when compared to the $100.9 million reported for the corresponding period in 2022 marked a slight increase of less than 3%.

Further details released by the MGCB reveal that the revenue from table games and slots last month increased by 4.4% when compared to January 2022. However, a month-over-month comparison to December 2022 showed that table games and slots revenue in January dipped by 4.5%.

Sports Betting Revenue Plummets

A breakdown of the $103.5 million in revenue for January reveals that retail sports betting produced only $111,023, while table games and slots generated $103.4 million in revenue.

The Board revealed that qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) for retail sports betting last month plummeted by 94.3% or $1.8 million below the January 2022 results. Moreover, a comparison to December 2022 also shows a decrease, with QAGR from retail sports betting reported by the three casinos down by $1.5 million or 93.2%.

The total sports betting handle in January was $15.3 million, while a breakdown of QAGR per property showed losses for two operators. Motor City Casino was the only casino that reported positive QAGR from sports betting last month, hitting $236,503. On the other hand, both Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MGM reported losses from this segment of $62,755 and $62,725 respectively.

Gaming Revenue Increases

Despite the dip in the sports betting segment, the three casinos in Detroit posted an increase in their January gaming revenue. Hollywood Casino posted an 11.9% increase in its gaming revenue to $22.9 million last month when compared to the same period in 2022. Additionally, MGM reported a 3.2% increase in gaming revenue to $50.2 million last month, while Motor City Casino observed a 1.3% increase in gaming revenue to $30.3 million when compared to January 2022.

Keeping in mind the gaming revenue results, the trio paid a total of $8.4 million in taxes to Michigan. This result was in line with the $8 million paid in taxes for the same period the prior year. Revenue market share data released by the MGCB revealed that MGM held 48% of the share in January, while Motor City and Hollywood Casino were responsible for 30% and 22% respectively.

Massachusetts Regulator Tackles Its First Operator Violations

Massachusetts Gaming Commission Weighs Betr License Suitability

The incidents happened within the first two weeks of legal sports betting in the Bay State, showcasing the significant challenges standing before the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. However, they will also be a valuable opportunity to test its compliance procedures. With mobile betting launching in less than a month, the regulator must set the right tone and ensure that all violators receive a strict but fair judgment.

All Three Sportsbooks Allowed Illegal Bets

The first reported violations occurred last week after two of the state’s three regulated operators self-reported breaching the strict rules regarding betting on in-state collegiate sports. Encore Boston Harbor and Plainridge Park Casino reportedly offered wagers on, respectively, the Boston College women’s basketball game and Merrimack College men’s basketball game, prompting an investigation from the Commission.

According to regulations, all betting activity on games involving a Massachusetts-based school is strictly banned unless the game is part of a tournament with at least four teams. This rule appears particularly challenging for operators. According to recent reports, MGM Springfield also allowed wagers on two Harvard men’s basketball games. All the violations so far have been self-reported, which should mollify the regulator.

Chairwoman Cathy Judd-Stein noted that the operator fully expected similar non-compliance issues. She has already helped schedule adjudicatory hearings regarding the three regulation breaches. The Commission admitted that sportsbooks were still unclear on what wagers were allowed under Massachusetts law, so it planned to post answers to the most frequent questions in an online FAQ document.

The Commission Prefers a Mindful Approach

Massachusetts Gaming Commission representatives stated that the incidents were currently under review and that a verdict would follow soon. Any decision would set a precedent for future such cases, which is why commissioners prefer to take their time in these first few cases.
Commissioner Jordan Maynard noted that the Commission was prepared for such violations and was mindful of the best way to handle them.

I want to set the goalposts with my fellow commissioners early on and then see how it’s working.

Commissioner Jordan Maynard

With online sports betting arriving on March 10, the regulator is currently funneling most of its efforts to ensure a smooth and trouble-free launch. Their real work will begin afterward, as online sportsbooks can be very difficult to track. The Commission’s work with the initial relatively benign violations can be viewed as the first live test of its compliance enforcement strategy.

Mike McClain, Who Took Bad Beat by Raymer at 2004 WSOP Final Table, Passes Away

Mike McClain, Who Took Bad Beat by Raymer at 2004 WSOP Final Table, Passes Away

Earlier this month, the poker world received the news that longtime grinder Mike McClain passed away from stomach cancer.

McClain had a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and previously worked in the computer industry before taking up poker full-time.

“Mike had been a poker mentor to me. Just listening to him describe hands made me a much better player,” poker author Lee Jones, a friend of McClain’s, shared in a remembrance on Poker.org. “He would drive down from his home in the Sacramento area and sit in Bay 101’s $60-120 LHE game for a few days, make enough money to last a month, then drive home.”

Lee explained that McClain, who was diagnosed in 2021, recently make the decision to end chemo and spend his remaining days with family and friends.

“Mike didn’t make decisions like most people do, but in the years I knew him, he made many more correct decisions than he made wrong ones,” Lee added. “His last important decision was certainly tougher than any of us would want to face, but I’ve no doubt that Mike made the right decision for himself and his family – that’s all that matters.”

According to the Hendon Mob, McClain had $1,303,837 in lifetime tournament earnings including a career-best of $470,400 for finishing ninth in the 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. In fact, it was that tournament where he first got major time in the poker spotlight thanks in no small part to battling with eventual champ Greg Raymer.

Aces Cracked at 2004 WSOP Final Table

At the final table of the 2004 WSOP, which can be viewed on demand at PokerGO, McClain looked down at the {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds} and raised to 150,000. Raymer looked down at the {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} on the button and three-bet to 500,000. Both blinds folded and McClain moved all in.

Raymer called and got lucky when the flop came {7-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} to give him a set. The {8-Spades} turn meant a nine would chop it, but the {k-Hearts} river was a brick to eliminate McClain.

“In my limited interactions with him, what probably stood out the most was just how well he took the bad beat I gave him at the final table,” Raymer told PokerNews after learning of McClain’s passing. “While obviously disappointed, he was calm and composed, and never had a bad word to say about any of it. He honestly seemed to handle it as perfectly as possible. Instead of focusing on the bad luck of that hand, he kept in mind all of the good luck that got him that far and helped him win almost half a million dollars. I doubt even 2% of all poker players could have handled it as well, and that is a great testament to him and his skill at poker.”

Raymer added: “I ran into him several times after that final table, and he was always a super nice guy, very calm and quiet. I think what stood out to me the most about Mike was his clearly obvious intelligence. Somehow, even if he had hardly said a word, you just knew he was brilliant.”

Other highlights on McClain’s poker résumé included $182,900 for taking fifth in the 2007 World Poker Tour (WPT) Legends of Poker, $99,648 for finishing ninth in the 2006 WPT LA Poker Classic, and $53,777 for placing fourth in the 2008 WSOP Circuit Lake Tahoe $5,150 Main Event. His last documented tournament cash came in March 2020 when he placed 16th in the Bay 101 Shooting Star $5,200 Main Event for $17,595.

PokerNews offers condolences to the friends and family of Mike McClain, who will be sorely missed by the poker world.

OpenBet explained that 12% of all bets were placed in-game. When compared to the 8% result from 2022, this marked an increase in the popularity of in-play wagering.

The result, OpenBet said, reaffirmed the appeal of this unique product to the US audiences. Betting requests via BetBuilder hit a peak of 70,000 per minute, added the company.

Jennifer Tilly Can’t Catch a Break on Latest Episode of High Stakes Poker

Jennifer Tilly Can't Catch a Break on Latest Episode of High Stakes Poker

Actress Jennifer Tilly starred on Tuesday’s High Stakes Poker episode, but her role was that of an unlucky poker player.

Season 10 Episode 4 brought about some juicy pots and solid table banter. Chino Rheem picked up some hands and came out swinging. Jean-Robert Bellande couldn’t pull the trigger on a river bluff with ace-high against Matt Hanks in a $100,000 pot and lost to a small pair at showdown, and Ema Zajmovic paid off a $20,000 bet on the river with a 10-high flush against Rheem’s king-high flush. But Tilly brought most of the action during this action-packed episode.

Jennifer Tilly was recently inducted into the Women in Poker Hall of Fame!

Jennifer Tilly Came to Play Poker

jennifer tilly high stakes poker

Tilly was on quite the roller coaster ride throughout the 45-minute show. She won some pots, she lost some pots, but the biggest ones didn’t go her way, especially a monster pot she played against Bellande.

In that hand, with an $800 straddle on and a few limpers in the pot, the Bride of Chucky star made it $10,000 from the small blind with {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}. Only “JRB,” who was holding {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} in the big blind, called.

The flop was {2-Clubs}{10-Spades}{6-Clubs}, giving Bellande middle set. Tilly, who didn’t improve on that flop, bet out $15,000, and this is where the hand went off the rails. Bellande raised it up to $40,000, and then Tilly came in for an aggressive re-raise to $125,000, turning her pocket pair into a bluff.

Aggression often pays off in no-limit Texas hold’em, but not when your opponent has the second nuts. Bellande didn’t waste any time moving all in for $281,000, and both players had almost identical stacks. There wasn’t anything Tilly could do at that point other than to fold her hand.

In a hand against Rheem, the Hollywood star bet $10,000 with {k-Hearts}{6-Hearts} on a board of {3-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Hearts}, which gave her a flush and straight draw. Her opponent, however, flopped a set of deuces and raised it up to $25,000.

Tilly wasn’t going anywhere with 12 outs, so she made the call and hit the worst card in the deck for her hand against a set — {k-Spades}. When Rheem bet $21,000, she paid it off and then saw the bad news.

Tilly didn’t lose every hand she played, however. She flopped two pair against Bobby Baldwin in another hand and scooped a $60,000 pot when the former poker world champion failed to connect on his straight draw.

“The Magician” Returns to Action

At the end of the Episode 4, PokerGO teased next Tuesday’s show, which includes a slight but major change at the table. Antonio Esfandiari will appear in the game, which should create some action.

“The Magician” has mostly retired from poker and hasn’t played much the past couple of years since becoming a father. Esfandiari was a regular on High Stakes Poker during the show’s early years on Game Show Network in the 2000s.

Later in the season, numerous old-school pros such as Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, and Phil Ivey will appear. The 10th season has already undergone some significant changes, most notably the retirement of legendary broadcaster Gabe Kaplan, who was subsequently replaced by Nick Schulman.

High Stakes Poker Season 10 returns next week on PokerGO at 5 p.m. PT with Episode 5.
