PokerDivas’ Ellen Leikind Continues Mission to Help Professional Women Via Poker Skills

PokerDivas’ Ellen Leikind Continues Mission to Help Professional Women Via Poker Skills

How can we get more women in the game? It’s a question often asked by poker pundits. While venues and tours work on answering that question, another outlet is asking a slightly different question – how can we use poker to embolden women in the real world.

That outlet is PokerDivas, which is dedicated to helping professional women (and men) become bold and decisive at the conference table through the skills they acquire at the poker table.

As they say on their website, pokerdivas.com: “Did you know that you’ve been playing poker your whole life even if you’ve never played a hand of cards? It’s not about gambling, it’s about building confidence, learning to read people, becoming a better negotiator, and being assertive and bold.”

PokerDivas was created in 2006 by Ellen Leikind, an entrepreneur and corporate innovator. Her mission is to show how you can win in life and business using the strategies of poker even if you have never played the game.

Leikind, who wrote the book Poker Woman: How to Win at Love, Life, and Business using the Principles of Poker, has been carrying on the mission for the past 17 years, making it one of the longest-running women-focused poker initiatives in the history of the game.

Q&A with Ellen Leikind

PokerNews recently had the opportunity to chat with Leikind about PokerDivas:

PokerNews: You began playing poker as a teenager. What got you interested in the game? What made you revisit it?

Leikind: My mom taught me poker when I was a kid. Instead of baking and cooking after school we played poker. Back then it was 5-card draw and 7-Card Stud. I got back to the poker table after taking a hiatus from 15 years in corporate America. I finally had some free time and I love cards so I looked for a poker game. Believe it or not, I found one on Craigslist that was run by a woman. It took me three months to actually get the nerve to show up. It was eight guys, the host, and myself.

What inspired you to start PokerDivas after years of having another very successful career launching over a billion dollars in successful beauty products?

I started PokerDivas 15 years ago because I saw how women were being excluded from Poker much like they were from golf. That was very obvious in Corporate America. Golf was the sport du jour and Poker was up and coming in the same way. After attending a Poker PR networking event with less than a hand full of women in a roomful of 100, I said I am going to start a company — Poker for professional women.

I saw how the game gave me confidence, got me more comfortable taking risks, and gave me access to people I would not normally come into contact with. Poker is a boys’ club much like Corporate America and I love empowering women with a male-dominated sport. It feels great to be a pioneer in empowering professional women with this game.

There’s been an ebb and flow to poker-you came into this business in the post-Moneymaker flush peak of poker. Now there’s increased in-person demand at tournaments after the pandemic eased up its restrictions. How do you see the “business” of poker progressing in 2023?

People definitely want to get out and play live. You see that in the casinos, card rooms and we see it with our corporate clients. The great thing about the game is that everyone has access to it. Live and virtually. I think interest will continue to grow.

We’ve spoken about how golf was a prime networking arena that women didn’t necessarily have access to in 2005-06, and poker is similar, shall we say, “lost” opportunity for women to build relationships with potential work partners, or other business opportunities. Do you see your company and your credo as a way of opening up that opportunity to other women, as well as in the corporate venue?

Our PokerDivas program will definitely open the opportunity for more women to participate in the game. You don’t need to be a pro to play and enjoy it. Having the basic skills and confidence to sit at the table is what’s important. It gives you access to people and a great way to network and socialize. Many business opportunities have been made at the Poker table.

How’ve you witnessed the evolution or stagnation of women in poker?

I feel this year has seen a quiet, seismic shift-do you feel that with corporate culture as well? There has been more of an effort to be inclusive of women in the game and to make Poker and the Corporate world more female-friendly. Special events geared toward women have been plentiful and are a good start.

The question becomes is it for show or is there a real interest in integrating women into the game? There have to be meaningful efforts made after these women’s events to create changes that are impactful and produce a long-term inclusive environment at the poker table and the conference table. One-and-done events are just not going to do it.

The Muck: Why Don’t More Women Play Poker?

For many years, women have been seen as an untapped market for poker, but the numbers haven’t shifted much, until the WPT Championship. Do you see their business model as one to aspire to for other tournaments?

That is true, it is an untapped market. The number of women playing big poker events remains in the 4-5% range. Pretty close to the 8% of female CEO’s, we see in the Fortune 500. Having said that, just because women are not playing in big tourneys doesn’t mean they are not in the game.

There is so much to be learned from poker like reading people, dealing with different personalities, learning to have confidence and being the bettor, along with connecting and having fun. They may prefer to play for different reasons than winning a big tournament. Whether online, in small home games, or attending charity tournaments.

Ellen Leikind’s poker book.

Do you see women as more naturally risk-adverse, or is that a condition of our culture? Is this part of the reason you see poker as a tool to encourage more risk-taking, more aggression, and asserting our power as women?

I’ve traveled around the world talking about this, in seminars and in my book Poker Woman, How to Win in Love, Life, and Business using the Principles of Poker. I think most women would benefit by becoming more frequent risk-takers. I see it at our co-ed PokerDivas Teambuilding and Leadership corporate events. Women go all in less frequently, bet in smaller amounts and bluff less.

It is likely a combination of culture, how we are brought up and wiring. I’m not talking about reckless risk taking just for the adrenaline rush but calculated risks with good odds and high upside. Playing poker helps people get comfortable taking risks. That’s why I am so passionate about getting women into the poker mindset and learning to bet on themselves.

Your mission with PokerDivas seems to be to help other women access the skills and prowess necessary to succeed in business, negotiation, targeted risk assessment, and helping access and harness their own worth in the business field. How’s this company helped make this mission a reality and who taught you those skills in your life?

Yes. The PokerDivas program has empowered many women to take their seat at any table and get what they want and are worth. Learning to play to win as opposed to avoid losing. Strength versus fear. We have worked with hundreds of companies and tens of thousands of women to teach them the strategy of the game and give them a taste of what it’s like to sit at the poker table.

Our program has changed the odds for women in their favor. We have many success stories of women asking for promotions, engaging in and winning negotiations, writing books, starting businesses, and going out and taking risks that pay off. And it goes beyond professionally – through the years, I’ve heard from many people who have participated in my events that they used these strategies in their personal lives. Whether it was starting and ending relationships, negotiating with their kids, parents and landlords, or making life changes.

On a personal level for me, it was poker strategy that gave me the confidence and skills to take the leap from Corporate America to entrepreneurship. My mom taught me the game and my dad was always pushing me to speak up, go after what I wanted and play to win. He had a poker mindset even though he never played the game.

Charities Unamused by Paddy Power‘s Recent Ad

Charities Unamused by Paddy Power‘s Recent Ad

About a week ago, Paddy Power released a new advert for Tottenham Hotspur. The ad is called The Spurs Fan Centre and makes fun of the team’s suboptimal performance and lack of notable achievements.

Miserable Time to Be a Spurs Fan

In its ad, Paddy Power showcases an employee walking the viewers around a fictional “Spurs Fan Center.” The center is almost entirely focused on Arsenal and their bad plays, the employee explained, as it would be “a pretty short experience” if the whole center was dedicated to Spurs’ achievements.

The only room that is dedicated to Tottenham Hotspur seems to be the restroom where photos of the team’s few achievements can be seen. In addition, the club has a dedicated VR room where Spurts fans can don a headset to hide their tears.

However, not everyone was amused.

The Advert Allegedly Mocked People with Autism

According to Level Playing Field, a charity that promotes inclusivity for disabled sports enthusiasts, claims that the ad indirectly makes fun of autistic people. The charity spoke with The Athletic on the matter and explained that the ad essentially refers to the fan center as a “Spurts Sensory Center.”

This may refer to the sensory rooms each Premier League club has. These rooms are essentially where people with autism and other difficulties can enjoy matches. Level Playing Field felt that the ad makes fun of these people with special needs.

The charity noted that the decision to call the fictional club a “sensory center” might just have been poor wording but is seriously undermining the message of the advert regardless.

Level Playing Field’s sentiment was echoed by the National Autistic Society, which believes that Paddy Power’s Tottenham Hotspur ad is nothing more than a “cheap jibe.”

Sensory rooms are not a punchline — they’re an important way to support autistic people and their families to attend big sporting events, like football matches. Without that safe and calming space, they might find the noise and large crowds completely overwhelming.

Tim Nicholls, head of influencing and research, National Autistic Society

Nicholls noted that the efforts to make sports accessible to autistic people should not be made fun of. He added that the National Autistic Society wants a world where everyone can enjoy soccer.

As of the time of this writing, Paddy Power’s controversial The Spurs Fan Centre advert has been taken down from most platforms. However, it is still available on YouTube.

Morgan Stanley: Macau 2023 GGR and EBITDA Revised Upwards

Morgan Stanley: Macau 2023 GGR and EBITDA Revised Upwards

Gambling industry analysts at Morgan Stanley believe that gambling in Macau is on the way to recovering, raising its gross gambling revenue (GGR) estimate for 2023 by 42% and 2023 EBITDA estimate by 70%.

Better Product Mix, Higher Margins

According to the note released by Morgan Stanley on Monday, the gambling industry in the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China is about to deliver $22 billion in GGR and $5.8 billion in EBITDA in 2023. The new 2023 EBITDA estimate still falls short of the $9.3 billion in EBITDA in 2019 but is 30% above the industry consensus of $4.5 billion.

The main factors analysts Praveen Choudhary, Gareth Leung and Stephen Grambling cited for raising the 2023 GGR and EBITDA estimates are the better product mix and higher margins due to the return of Chinese customers.

Further, the investment bank estimates that there should be further industry improvements in 2024 when EBITDA will reach $9.6 billion to surpass the 2019 level mainly due to the revenue mix. For 2024, Morgan Stanley’s estimate is 17% above the industry consensus.

Justifying the revised estimates, Morgan Stanley analysts stated that the reopening of China resulted in additional revenue and profit for Macau operators in the first two months of the year which was not factored in the previous calculations as it was not expected.

Mass to Trigger Operating Leverage

Analysts believe that the sustainability of premium mass will be key to achieving pre-pandemic EBITDA levels in 2024 in the absence of junket business, claiming “that EBITDA margin will be 500 bps higher than in 2019 mainly due to operating leverage resulting from mass gaming reaching a certain level.

The team of analysts outlined two main reasons why their revised estimates for 2023 and 2024 are significantly higher than the industry consensus: the historical correlation of Macau’s mass segment with China’s nominal GDP, which exceeded in 2022 by more than 20% the 2019 level and could maintain a pace of between 4% to 5% annually going forward, and the infrastructure improvements related to the larger customs checkpoints and increase in hotel rooms by 4,000 new rooms during the pandemic.

Morgan Stanley analysts concluded that due to the revenue mix improvement EBITDA margin in 2024 could increase to 28%, as compared to 23% in 2019.

Earlier in the month, data released from the Macau government revealed that the casino industry in the SAR generated MOP11.58 billion ($1.44 billion) in January, an increase of 82.5% year-over-year and its highest monthly in three years, sparking optimism that a solid industry recovery is underway.

Galaxy Entertainment Group Appointed Ted Chan as CFO

Galaxy Entertainment Group Appointed Ted Chan as CFO

One of Macau’s casino concessionaires, Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), announced a major change in its executive team with the departure of Robert Drake whose role as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will be assumed by Ted Chan.

Extensive Financial and Operational Experience

The appointment of Chan as Galaxy Entertainment’s new CFO will take place after a few months of transition starting from March 1, 2023, during which Chan will work together with Drake, according to the information released by the company this Monday.

Commenting on the announcement, Galaxy Entertainment’s vice chairman, Francis Lui, highlighted Chan’s extensive industry experience, boasting over two decades across operational and financial roles in both regional and Macau gaming under his belt.

Lui noted that Chan had joined Galaxy Entertainment in 2018 as Chief Operating Officer for the company’s Japan Development, bringing “extensive gaming, hospitality and business development experience.”

“The unique combination of Ted’s wealth of local integrated resort knowledge combined with his over two decades of management experience and familiarity with GEG makes him ideally suited for the role,” Lui added.

Chan, who will resume operations in Macau once fully transitioned into the role, will have the support of GEG’s existing finance and investor relations teams to help him lead the company into its next era of growth.

Chan’s previous experience involves two roles at Melco Crown: as Property President of Altira Macau between 2008 and 2010, and as Group Chief Operating Officer from 2010 until 2016 when he stepped down.

Significant Contributions to the Group

Lui also spoke about the impending departure of long-time CFO Drake, who after stepping down from the role, will continue in a Senior Advisor capacity with the company, acknowledging his “significant contribution to the Group over the past 15 years” and expressing his sincere appreciation now when he has decided to pursue his interests.

Lui then outlined Drake’s most “significant milestones” with GEG, including “navigating the company through the global financial crises and the COVID-19 pandemic, inclusion of GEG as a constituent of the Hang Seng Index, opening Galaxy Macau Phases 1 & 2 and Broadway Macau, and, most recently, the successful issuance of GEG’s new Macau gaming concession and preparation of the forthcoming opening of our Cotai Phase 3 development.”

Last year, GEG experienced the negative impact of casino closures in Macau, and its revenue in the third business quarter slumped by more than 50% but less than the 70% overall drop for the industry.

Katia Koxenoglou, the Super League’s deputy president of the Board of Directors, was similarly excited about the sponsorship agreement with Stoiximan. She explained that the new collaboration will benefit the duo and deliver exciting experiences for soccer fans as well. Finally, Koxenoglou thanked Stoiximan for their collaboration and predicted that sponsorship will deliver success to the duo.

Cómo la Administración del Tiempo Puede ser un Salvavidas –

Preventing the Link Between Crime & Problem Gambling

  • No perseguir pérdidas

Bet2Bank Introduces a New and Unique Betting Experience

Bet2Bank Introduces a New and Unique Betting Experience

The project confirmed Monday that the new unique betting experience seeks to eliminate different shortcomings of the traditional centralized wagering platforms. Such deficiencies include a lack of security, high fees, as well as lack of transparency.

Bet2Bank users can benefit from accessing different features thanks to holding quantities of BXB tokens. Moreover, the project itself operates on a three-tier system which further improves the process and improves efficiency.

“Bet2Bank facilitates its users with Betting-as-a-Service (BaaS) where a custom TG bot is connected to a smart contract that works with another bot to place low-risk sports bets automatically based on preset parameters and collected data,” explains a statement released by Bet2Bank. The blockchain-based project enables the users to deposit USDC, then place a command with the bot which then returns their USDC along with profits, if there are such.

Bet2Bank is proud to launch this innovative gaming experience that provides a decentralized and inclusive platform for our community. The company is thriving to transform the gaming and trading industry by incorporating blockchain and web3 technologies that ensure transparency, security, and low fees,

Thanks to the P2P custom betting functionality, users can engage in trades against other users. This delivers plenty of unique functions and gaming options, delivering game customization options for the users. At the same time, the users can create their own trades. It’s important to mention that before the outcome of the event is revealed, the users’ funds are held in escrow.

Currently, Bet2Bank’s project team has three partners: a significantly experienced Web3 developer, as well as two partners that were a part of large-scale market cap projects. SirTris, a trusted and respected developer within the ERC-20 vertical has written the BXB smart contract, which is hard-coded with taxes that cannot go above 7%. Moreover, under the contract, Max wallet cannot be changed to zero, which eliminates any attempts for tampering or scams.

Mount Airy Casino Donates Bedding and Towels to an Animal Shelter

Mount Airy Casino Donates Bedding and Towels to an Animal Shelter

Mount Airy Casino Resort, a property that prides itself on being the first AAA Four-Diamond casino resort in Pennsylvania, has launched a new initiative to help neglected animals. The casino will provide animals in a certain Pennsylvanian shelter with bedding that will ensure they are warm and comfortable.

As announced by Mount Airy, it will donate truckloads of its bed sets from the finest Egyptian cotton to a local animal shelter. These luxurious items, which the shelter would not otherwise have been able to afford, will help local animals feel better and warmer while waiting to be adopted.

The recipient of the casino resort’s charity is Camp Papillon, a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The shelter is currently struggling to keep its rescue dogs warm and comfortable throughout the cold winter months, which is why MGM Resorts’ donation comes at just the right time.

The Items Will Help Animals Feel Comfortable

Felicia Katz, the vice president of Camp Papillon, thanked Mount Airy for its commitment to helping the animals in need. She noted that the towels in particular would be very useful to dry animals after their baths. The comfort that these items will provide, Katz, says will make the animals calmer and more adoptable.

These linens foster relaxation and alleviate some of the stress that animals may experience when confined to a shelter. We know firsthand that calm animals are more adoptable animals.

Felicia Katz, VP, Camp Papillon

Mount Airy’s chief operating officer and general manager, Ben Koff, also commented on the matter. He noted that the casino has always sought to benefit its local community and support its neighbors like they have supported Mount Airy.

Finding a way to reuse these quality linens while helping those in need represents Mount Airy’s dedication to regional nonprofits and our commitment to serving as responsible stewards of the environment.

Ben Koff, COO, Mount Airy Casino

This is not Mount Airy’s first charity initiative. Throughout the years, the casino resort has donated over a million dollars in cash grants, donations and community event sponsorships. Some of the initiatives that the casino has supported include Meals on Wheels and The Salvation Army among others.

The donation to Camp Papillon is not the only time Mount Airy has donated linens and bedding items either. As announced by the casino resort, bedding and linens have also been donated to Gracedale Nursing Home, Lehigh Valley Outreach, Monroe County Homeless Shelter and Metamorphosis Women’s Empowerment Initiative.

At the moment, Mount Airy is also working on another similar initiative that will see it give away hundreds of pieces of luggage, cookware, utensil sets, first aid kits, coffee makers and tote bags to local nonprofits. This initiative is part of its agreement with the Pocono Mountains United Way.

How Do I Figure? – Gambling With An Edge

Putting Bills Into a Machine

I received the following email. It requires more analysis than I normally do without charge for strangers, but since I can get a column out of it, why not?

Upcoming video poker excursion commencing Friday, leaving Saturday evening.

 Playing exclusively $1 9/6 JOB 99.54%.

 My Offers for this Trip:

1 night comp’d in the best tower on a Friday night, no taxes or resort fees.

  1. $50 Walmart Gift Card to pick-up (Friday)
  2. $50 Bonus Slot Play (not sure if this can be played on VP since I’m fairly new to the casino) – Saturday only
  3. 4x Tier Credits all day Saturday 7a-midnight – likely all of my play will be Saturday

How do I calculate whether I have an advantage or not, or is it even mathematically possible?

Okay. I wasn’t given enough information to completely analyze this, but let’s give it a shot. The following are things to consider in no particular order:

9/6 Jacks or Better does indeed return 99.544% — if you play it accurately. Many players do not play it accurately. You don’t automatically receive that return by showing up. So, how well do you play this game?

A free room is nice, and a nicer room is better than a standard room, but I don’t include this in my calculation as to whether or not I have an advantage. I have a place to stay at home that I’m paying for whether I’m there or not. Just because other people might be charged $200 to stay in that room doesn’t mean that me not paying for it adds $200 to my equity.

On the other hand, how much is it costing me to get to this casino? If it’s 15 miles away, I’m not taking that into consideration (other than for tax reasons.) If it’s 1,500 miles away and I have significant expenses to get there which are not being reimbursed by the casino, then that definitely should count as negative Expected Value.

If you view playing video poker as a hobby, and hobbies cost money, then it can be easy to justify an airfare expenditure as part of the cost of enjoying your hobby. But this does not mean that you’re gambling with an edge. It means you are, maybe, paying less than retail to enjoy your hobby.

I include the gift card and free play at face value. To be sure, I’d rather have $100 in cash than a $50 gift card and $50 free play, but it’s “close enough.” If it were a $50 Chevron card, however, that’s not worth so much to me. Nothing against Chevron. It’s just that I drive an electric car and don’t buy gas.

This letter stipulates that he picks up the gift card on Friday but isn’t going to play until Saturday. Are you going to spend the rest of Friday costlessly?

Picking up a gift but not playing on a particular day may or may not sit well with the casino. Doing this occasionally is no big deal. Making a practice out of it may well cause the casino to stop giving you these gifts. Remember, even though players generally see these gifts as a reward for past play, casinos generally see these rewards as an incentive to get you to come in and play more. If you collect the gift but do not play more, and do this regularly, some casinos will punish you by not giving you these rewards in the future.

Playing 9/6 Jacks or Better costs you, on average, $45.60 per $10,000 coin-in. It isn’t specified how much is going to be played. If you only play $1,000 that weekend, it’ll cost you $4.56 on average, but you’re not likely going to get these offers in the future. If you play $100,000 that weekend (not likely on a $1 single line game), your expected loss is $456, which swamps the offers you are scheduled to received.

The $50 in free play and the $50 gift card are “one time stock amounts.” The losing of $45.60 per $10,000 coin-in is a “recurring flow amount.” You can’t really add up stock amounts and flow amounts. If you say, I’m going to play $xxxx amount of coin-in, and that is going to cost me 0.00456 * $xxxx, then the Expected Value of what you’re going to play becomes a specific stock amount which can be offset by the other stock amounts. But so long as it’s a nebulous amount of play, the amounts are not addable.

You mention that you’ll receive 4x tier credits. That’s nice. That’s clearly better than 2x tier credits. But I have no idea what tier credits are worth at this casino to you. (I don’t know which casino or even in which state this casino is located.) Are you planning on playing enough to reach a particular tier level in the requisite time. (Usually, tiers are recalculated annually or semi-annually. January 1 through December 31 is perhaps the most typical time interval to calculate tiers, but it can be April 1 – September 30, or any other interval.)

If a free (actually “highly discounted”) cruise is part of your tier benefits, is this something of value to you? Some people like cruising. Some don’t. Some have a cruising partner. Others don’t and may not like taking a cruise unaccompanied. If a daily free buffet is a tier benefit, and you’re only going to be at this casino for four days the entire year, then this isn’t such a big deal. Even if you plan to be at this casino fifty or more times, eating at the same place so frequently gets to be rather tiresome. If free internet is a benefit but you’re wary of using free internet and always travel with your own secure hot spot, then this benefit isn’t worth anything to you. You get the idea. A list of benefits in a brochure is not the same as the value to you – which may very well be different than the value of the same tier level to me.

You mention tier credits. Do you earn other credits and how much are they worth? The Caesars system, for example, gives you Reward Credits as well as Tier Credits. You can spend these RCs for food, merchandise, and other things. You can even turn them into free play — discounted 50%. Is there anything similar to this at this particular casino?

Are there other benefits you didn’t mention? Perhaps drawing tickets for a new car at the end of the month? You’re not likely to earn enough tickets playing one day of single-line dollars to give you a meaningful shot at this, but if you’re going to be at this casino anyway when the drawing is going on, surely this drawing is worth something.

Finally, unless this is your last time at this casino ever (in which case your tier level is irrelevant), you’ll be earning benefits down the road for your play this time. You might get free play in the mail. You might get future offers similar to the current one. You can’t take this one weekend in isolation. It’s part of the overall package.

I go through this kind of calculation for every offer I get. I play at enough casinos that I frequently have choices of offers at more than one place. I use the process described here to rank these offers. Sometimes I can take advantage of two or more offers in the same time period, but usually they are mutually exclusive.

And whatever answer I come up with this weekend, next weekend I’ll go through the same process again to decide what to do then.
