Nevada continues to be one of the five US states that do not currently run an official lottery, in spite of the undeniably large number of casino resorts and other forms of gambling available for gamers. 

In February, Assemblyman Cameron “CH” Miller tried to finally bring a change by proposing a state-backed lottery that would attract more funds for mental health programs for youths and other sectors. The proposal once again hit a brick wall with the Nevada Resorts Association.  

Pondering the Economic and Financial Impacts 

Miller’s proposed amendment to the constitution that would lift the current ban imposed on lotteries received the support of the Culinary Union. 

However, the Nevada Resorts Association (NRA), the voice of the gaming and resort industry in the state, expressed a different position. Accordingly, the Culinary Union publicly shared its disappointment regarding the NRA’s stance on the legalization of lotteries.

According to The Nevada Independent’s report, NRA’s president Virginia Valentine stated a plan that would set up a state lottery should take into account the economic and financial impacts on all businesses in Nevada.

As explained in the statement issued by the Culinary Union’s secretary-treasurer, Ted Pappageorge, earlier this week, the organization did not take well the news that the state’s “biggest industry is content with Nevada being last in the country in mental health and close to last on education.”

This is because, over the years, the union has been involved in a series of important battles carried out for working families in Carson City, including their fights against Big Pharma regarding the need for more transparency in relation to diabetes and asthma drugs. The union has also successfully ended a long two-and-a-half decades battle against surprise medical bills sent to the residents of Nevada. 

As expected, Nevada’s largest Latinx/Black/AAPI/immigrant organization hosting members from 178 countries has also been busy lobbying for a State Lottery that would dedicate a part of its funds to supporting youth mental health and education.

The Culinary Union Urges the NRA to “Do Better”

As further explained in the same statement issued by Pappageorge, the organization plans to keep being a fierce advocate for its members and all Nevadans to benefit from quality health care and Neighborhood Stability. In this regard, Pappageorge asked the NRA “to do better” for the state communities. 

To strengthen its arguments, the Culinary Union used data from a World Health Organization Study that revealed the number of cases of depression and anxiety went up by 25% during the first year of the pandemic.

While it did not yet issue an estimate on the revenue that Nevada is now losing by failing to legalize lotteries, the Culinary Union is asking for a “consistent long-term funding stream to cover the mental health needs of children and teens in Nevada.”

The same statement from the organization explained the state was a “regulatory gold standard of gaming” that knows how to accurately manage gaming in such a way that would not have a negative impact on its citizens. Therefore, the union called sustainable investment in the mental health of the youth a “good public policy that is long overdue”. 

Moreover, the organization announced the launch of a campaign dedicated to convincing voters to show more support for programs that would fund youth mental health and education while looking forward to “working with Assemblyman Miller on this vital effort” and urging the legislature to pass the amendment to the constitution and invest in the people of the state.

The UK Introduced Stricter Advertising Laws

For the past few years, Who Wot Why served as Sky Bet’s agency. However, the introduction of stricter advertising rules by the Advertising Standards Authority prompted Sky Bet to introduce a change.

Under the renewed rules, gambling companies should avoid appealing to minors. As a result, they are prohibited from using celebrities and famous athletes in their marketing efforts.

At the beginning of 2023, Sky Bet came under scrutiny for a marketing campaign featuring the ex-soccer professional Micah Richards. Since Richards is retired, the Advertising Standards Authority concluded that the ad does not appeal to young audiences and did not reprimand the operator.

Grey London’s joint managing director, Jonny Tennant Price, commented on the agreement. Peacock-Goodwin added that Sky Bet was looking for an agency partner that is able to help the operator chart a new and exciting stage for itself. Last December, Sky Bet expanded its odds services partnership with Sporting Solutions. Thanks to that, the operator will continue to benefit from the latter company’s products through 2023.

Two casinos in Iowa have been fined by the local regulator for breaching the state’s gambling regulations. The properties in question are Diamond Jo Worth Casino and Horseshoe Casino, Radio Iowa, a local news outlet, reported.

The first of the two properties, as noted by Brian Ohorilko, administrator of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, was fined for allowing an underage player to gamble. The player remained unchallenged and played for two hours and a half, Ohorilko said.

The breach dates to May 2022 and was due to the security workers failing to request ID. Because of its incompliance, Diamond Jo Worth was forced to pay a fine of $20,000. This is the fine the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission typically hands when casinos breach this rule for the first time.

The second breach came from Horseshoe Casino which failed to properly help a person exclude themselves from gambling. The person came to the casino and played for some time before asking a security officer about self-exclusion schemes. Unfortunately, the casino did not have anyone to help the customer enroll in the statewide self-exclusion program at the time.

While the casino did what it could and redirected the player to another casino where they successfully excluded themselves, in doing so, it breached the local regulations. Since Horseshoe Casino was unable to help its player, it received a fine of $20,000. As per Iowan rules, each casino should have someone who can enroll a customer at their request.

An Online Sportsbook Was also Fined

The two casinos were not the only gambling entities that received a fine. The local gambling authority also slapped the online sportsbook Rush Street Interactive with a similar fine. According to the regulator, the sports betting brand allowed people to charge their accounts using their credit cards – something that is strictly forbidden in the state.

It was noted that the operator had accepted as many as 42 credit card transactions. In total, customers collectively added almost $10,000 into their accounts using credit cards. As a result of its violation, Rush Street Interactive had to pay a fine of $20,000.

While the problem here was due to the payments company working with Rush Street Interactive, the operator should have been more careful when implementing its payment solutions. Ohorilko noted that the payment provider’s other partners have also been fined for similar violations.
