Chelsea May Decouple from Parimatch as White Paper Looms

Chelsea vs Dortmund Champions League Odds, Time, and Prediction

No soccer club is keen to act preemptively, as a previously considered proposal to drop sponsorships between gambling firms and sports teams in the Premier League was deferred after it transpired that the White Paper reregulating the industry would be delayed.

Chelsea FC Considers Position in Parimatch Deal

Nevertheless, the Premier League may soon be looking to follow up on this decision as it comes off the backburner and becomes a front-and-centre topic once again. Parimatch, meanwhile, is facing some trouble in its native Ukraine where regulators banned it for a period of 50 years with a presidential decree, along with other companies.

Parimatch’s presence in the Premier League has been visible, though, and a rumored breakup with Chelsea would probably hurt both the soccer team and the company itself. But the link between Chelsea FC and Parimatch is not that clear, to begin with.

For one, Parimatch is said to have severed ties with the club back in March 2022, but The Daily Mail, a mostly sensationalist publication, has stipulated that the two entities still maintain some connection.

Chelsea in the meantime has responded to a request to The Daily Mail about whether the club was aware that Ukrainian regulators have targeted Parimatch. The club did not say much beyond that it was reviewing the situation.

Targeting Parimatch in Ukraine is almost bizarre, however, as the company has been a staunch supporter of the relief efforts in the country mounted to resist Russian invaders, and has even lost members of its team. Yet, Ukraine has been acting proactively. Authorities also targeted Sportradar LLC, a Russia-based copycat betting website which has hoped its similarity to Sportradar AG, a Swiss sports and tech company, would shield it from immediate regulatory action – it had not.

Regardless, authorities have considered it to be one of the 280 companies and 120 people that were banned. Meanwhile, Parimatch also reportedly maintains positions with Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Leicester. Those could also be coming under threat.

In the meantime, a final draft of the White Paper which would change the country’s gambling laws in the United Kingdom is finally expected to arrive this month.

Rick Perry Confident in Sports Betting Success in Texas

Rick Perry Confident in Sports Betting Success in Texas

In this state of limbo, some politicians remain confident that the arrival of more regulated gambling activities is actually good for the Lone Star State. Among them is former Gov. Rick Perry who is confident that voters are willing to see sports gambling passed, and that it should ultimately be their vote to see this matter through.

Lawmakers Put Things in Motion

Perry is somewhat confident that a bill pitched by Sen. Lois Kolkhorst could possibly make it through the Assembly and to the governor’s vote. There is also the bill introduced by Rep. Jeff Leach in the House, with both chambers now making a bid for sports gambling regulation, and both legislations enjoying a degree of bipartisan support.

Sports gambling has proven to be a particularly neutral ground when it comes to party divisions. The main objections are usually moral, and it is difficult to weigh whether the good of the newly-minted tax dollar would outweigh the bad done by problem gambling rates.

This moral turbulence aside, the new bills are given a fair shot to at least convince more people to consider sports gambling in the Assembly. Both Kolkhorst and Leach have worded their bills in fairly similar language. For example, they both expect their bills to collect a 10% tax on sports betting revenue and for holders to pay a $500,000 fee.

But for any sports gambling activity to take place in Texas, the constitution of the state would first have to be amended. This means a referendum, which ought to be decided on by voters. To get to a referendum, two-thirds majorities must be won in both the House and the Senate. It’s a hard thing, hosting referenda, but sports gambling seems to not be as divisive.

Let the Voters Decide

Perry himself spoke favorably of sports gambling while he was governor. He is also confident that the state stands to win a lot – around $500 million in revenue from the activity, which is a lot of additional funding to simply snub or pontificate about without strong arguments to support either claim.

Should the issue get to a referendum, Perry is more than confident that voters in the state would choose to pass a sports gambling legalization “overwhelmingly.” Legislators still have plenty of time to spearhead either of the two proposed bills as the legislative session ends on May 29.

Women’s World Boxing Championships Under PricewaterhouseCoopers Surveillance

Women’s World Boxing Championships Under PricewaterhouseCoopers Surveillance

The championships that are held in New Delhi, India between March 15 and March 31 will be monitored by an International Olympic Committee (IOC) led by the prestigious PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) company that offers business advisory services.

The championships will host 300 professional boxers from over 65 countries worldwide. Registrations for the event were announced last December, with competitions to be held in the 12 different weight categories ranging from 48 kg (105 lbs) to +81 kg (178 lbs).

The Decision, Part of IBA’s Compliance Assessment

The decision to have the championships monitored by the IOC led by PwC has come as a result of the compliance evaluation procedure of ongoing monitoring of the IBA as well as its continuous governance reform, methodology, and activities.

IBA’s is highly committed to guaranteeing the highest levels of integrity in selecting and assessing procedures of all technical officials.

This commitment together with the evaluation of its reform efforts should help lift the suspension of its recognition by the IOC right in time for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

IOC has recommended that boxing should not be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics under IBA, and the results of the freshly announced monitoring via PwC might lead to a change of heart as well.

The IBA expects the PwC committee to observe IBA’s “best practices regarding technical and competition rules, specifically its heralded bout review process.”

The PwC crew will work in parallel with the IBA during the championships in New Delhi, along with Prof. Richard McLaren and his globally recognized McLaren Independent Investigation Team chosen by the IBA to complete the background vetting checks and additional investigations and assessments of the competition officials.

The same team will also be responsible for inspecting the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championship 2023 which will be held between May 1 and May 14 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The World Championships, “A Testament to Indian Boxing’s Unparalleled Credentials”

As explained by the Boxing Federation of India’s president Ajay Singh, the World Championships are a “testament to Indian boxing’s unparalleled credentials”.

Singh further explained that the federation was fully equipped and ready to deliver a spectacular boxing experience with the IBA team by their side while expressing confidence that the upcoming World Championships “will help boost boxing” at a global level.

Excitement was also expressed regarding the Indian boxers that are expected to kickstart their careers in the international boxing scene. Gold medal winners will receive $100,000 in cash.

Silver medal winners will scoop up a cash prize of $50,000 while bronze medallists will be granted $25,000. The total prize fund for the championships has been capped at $2.4 million.

Esfandiari & Perkins Went All In on Draws for $600K Pot on High Stakes Poker

Esfandiari & Perkins Went All In on Draws for $600K Pot on High Stakes Poker

On Episode 8 of High Stakes Poker Season 10, which aired Tuesday night, Antonio Esfandiari and his good friend Bill Perkins gambled with drawing hands in a $606,000 pot.

While that was far and away the most entertaining pot of the night, it wasn’t the only hand worth mentioning. For the fourth straight week, the table remained mostly the same with the two aforementioned players in action along with Jennifer Tilly, Bobby Baldwin, Robert Sanchez, and Roger Sippl.

The high-stakes no-limit hold’em game on PokerGO brought about multiple six-figure pots and some exciting action, but none more so than the following hand.

Gambling for Stacks

Antonio Esfandiari

Last week on High Stakes Poker, we saw Esfandiari win an epic three-way cooler. This week, he fought for another monster pot in thrilling fashion.

In the hand in question, with a double straddle on, Tilly called the $2,000 straddle from the button with {q-Spades}{j-Diamonds} before Perkins raised to $10,000 from the big blind with {10-Spades}{8-Spades}. Seated in the first straddle, Sippl called with {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}, as did Esfandiari in the bigger straddle with {a-Spades}{4-Spades}.

“I’m forced to call,” Tilly then said, acknowledging she was pot-committed.

The flop ran out {2-Hearts}{7-Spades}{j-Spades}, something for all four players. Action checked to Esfandiari with the nut flush draw, and he tossed out a wager of $16,000, about half the size of the pot. Tilly called with top pair, but when Perkins raised it up to $50,000 with a straight flush draw, Sippl folded his gut-shot straight draw.

Esfandiari, with over $500,000 behind, paused for a moment before raising to $166,000. Tilly couldn’t call such a massive bet with just top pair, so she sent her cards into the muck. But Perkins, whose stack was at just over $280,000 when the hand began, moved all in, and the “Magician” called.

They agreed to run the turn and river twice, and the first run-out came {k-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}, followed by the {2-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} on the second board, both going Esfandiari’s way. As a result, he shipped the $606,400 pot,

In a later hand, Perkins was dealt {10-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and asked the table if he could pay $5,000 to be dealt two new cards. They agreed and his new hand got even worse – {5-Spades}{2-Clubs}. After Esfandiari raised to $3,200 with {4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} in the dark – he hadn’t even looked at his cards — Perkins bumped it to $15,200.

Esfandiari then peeked at his cards, showed the four-high, and mucked them. Perkins turned over the five-high and took down the pot in what would be the final hand of the session.

Sippl Makes a Move on Perkins

In the second hand of note from Episode 8, Baldwin raised to $2,000 with {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}. Sanchez called with {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} as did Perkins on the button with {6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. Sippl, in the small blind, then went for a three-bet to $6,000 with {a-Hearts}{q-Spades} and only Baldwin folded.

The flop came out {8-Spades}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and action checked over to Perkins, who fired out a bet of $5,000. Sippl called, Sanchez folded, and the {6-Spades} appeared on the turn. Sippl checked his queen-high flush draw to Perkins, who had just paired up and ripped off another bet, this time for $10,000.

The turn bet didn’t force a fold and they both saw the {10-Hearts} on the river. Although that card did nothing to improve ace-high, Sippl jammed all in for $45,000, which convinced his opponent, who had the best hand, to fold.

Sanchez Lets Esfandiari Take Pot with Ace-High

Sanchez raised on the button to $2,000 with {q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. That action was followed by Sippl calling from the big blind with {k-Spades}{q-Spades} and then Esfandiari three-betting to $10,000 with {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} in the straddle, which didn’t convince either player to fold.

All three remaining players looked at a flop of {2-Hearts}{9-Spades}{j-Spades}, giving Sippl a monster combo draw. Esfandiari, who completely whiffed, still bet out $13,000. He received just one call, of course from Sippl.

The turn was the {7-Diamonds}, no help to either player. With $80,000 in the pot, Esfandiari bet $23,400 and again was called. After the {j-Diamonds} appeared on the river, Sippl checked, putting the “Magician” in a tough spot. He’d already been called on the flop and turn, so the only way he could win at showdown was if his opponent had been chasing a flush or straight draw.

As it turned out, Sippl was chasing a draw, which meant a check from Esfandiari’s ace-king was good enough to win the hand without a bet.

High Stakes Poker Season 10 returns next week on PokerGO at 5 p.m. PT with Episode 9.

Over 8.1m Wagers Were Placed During the Launch Weekend of Massachusetts Online Betting

Fenway Park

More than 400,000 people submitted a combined 8.1m transactions during the first weekend of Massachusetts online sports betting.

The data comes from the geo-tracking company GeoComply, which provides gambling analytics and insights to different entities. The results of opening weekend are highly promising for a New England area that has a growing presence in the country’s gambling ecosystem.

the online arm will add $60m in annual tax revenue

Online sports betting launched in Massachusetts on March 10, pairing with the retail market that started on January 31. Officials estimate that the online arm will add $60m in annual tax revenue to the state kitty.

Of the 8.1m transactions, roughly 5,000 were blocked by GeoComply due to suspicious origin or accounts.

“With the gold standard of geolocation in place and an experienced team of experts, we are uniquely positioned to lead the fight against fraud in all its forms,” said Lindsay Slader, GeoComply’s senior vice president of compliance.

Nearly all of Massachusetts’ neighboring states, including New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York, have legal sports betting markets.

Massachusetts also churned out the fifth-most online bets this past weekend, behind only New York, New Jersey, Ohio (which also launched its online sports betting market this year), and Pennsylvania. Participation is also likely to grow in the immediate future thanks to March Madness tipping off Tuesday afternoon and running through April 3.
