History of Bingo ✔️ Bingo Origin, Present Day & Future

Renaissance Italy and Bingo

The main question we answer in this blog post is where bingo originated. That does not seem to be enough information for our curious readers, so we added other interesting facts. The table below shows the main sections of the article and grants you the freedom to choose which topic to read first. We recommend starting from top to bottom, but whatever you decide, don’t miss the answers to important questions at the end.

What is Bingo?

The shortest answer to this question is – bingo is a simple form of lottery. But this is not just another game of chance. We have already introduced the history of the bingo game, and now we wish to describe what bingo is. Check the table below and some of the bingo-related questions and answers non-players have:

❓ You Ask ✔️ We Answer
🎱 What is a bingo ticket? A paper or digital scorecard with columns and rows containing numbers or images. The size of the grid and the number of rows and columns depends on the type of bingo games and if this is an online or land-based gaming room.
🕞 How long is a bingo game? Bingo is held in sessions – Main Session, National Bingo Game Tickets, Early Session (aka First Chance or Early Bird), Late Sessions, and Special Tickets.
🛑 Does the game ever stop? Usually, a session lasts about 3 or 3 ½ hours with 5 or 10-minute breaks (intermissions). The game also stops when a winner is announced.
➡️ Where can I buy a bingo ticket? Bingo tickets are sold at the book sales desk, cashier desk, or by employees in the bingo room. Online casinos and bingo sites have a section for bingo ticket purchases. Most players buy strips of 6 tickets in the hope of getting all possible numbers.
🎟️ Are bingo tickets expensive? The price varies from one type of game to another, by country, and if you play online or at a brick-and-mortar bingo hall. Usually, the price is £1 – £5, but it could go higher in special or jackpot games.
🧐 Who leads the game? The ‘caller’ or ‘banker’ is the only person near the bingo balls and the only person not being ‘shushed’ during the bingo game. He (or she) announces the prizes before the beginning of the game, turns players’ attention to the tickets by saying ‘Eyes down’, announces the numbers, and validates all winning tickets.
🌀 How is the bingo balls shifter called? All bingo balls are held in a mechanical device called ‘cradle’ that spins, mixes them, and releases only one ball. Older versions were hats, bags, and barrels. The latest version is the electronic random number generator (RNG) used in some land-based casinos and all online bingo games.
🖋️ Do I use a pen? Pens and pencils are not enough when playing on paper tickets. It is best to use a ‘dabber’ or ‘dauber’ – a special marker that makes a huge dot covering most of the numbers. In some games, players use a pawn, chip, or marker to cover the digit.
💯 What are the winning combinations? They also depend on the game, but the standard ‘Bingo’ marks 5 horizontal (row), 5 vertical (column) or 5 diagonal digits. Other winning combinations are Four Corners, Line, Two Lines, Full House, or Blackout.
🙊 Why the caller speaks nonsense? All bingo numbers have funny names given through the years. Most creative are the British bingo nicknames.
💡 Is there a good bingo strategy? Players start with Granville’s or Tippett’s Method and try to find their strategy.
🤔 How do I play bingo? You can purchase a bingo ticket, take a seat in the bingo hallway , or enter the online bingo room if you play at a gambling site. Listen to the Caller and mark the announced numbers if you have them on the card. When you see a winning combination – shout ‘Bingo!!!!’
📣 How to announce I won? Shout ‘Bingo!’, ‘Yes!’, ‘I won!’, or anything else if you get another winning combination like Line or House if you have them on your ticket.
💰 What are the bingo prizes? Depends on the event, the operator, and the type of game. The most standard prizes are money (including a jackpot), but there can be material rewards and symbolic prizes.
🥳 How do I get my prize? The caller or a member of staff checks the ticket. If you win, you can collect the prize immediately or later.
😭 Can I miss my prize? Stop the game when the last number of the winning combination is announced. If you don’t, the next called-out number removes your winning claim, and you can’t get a prize.

The bingo history shows that the only way to learn how to win at bingo is to play. You will have fun, socialise, test your reflexes, and perhaps even get a prize. You will even have a chance to learn the stories behind the origins of bingo calls, and who knows, maybe you will get to use them in daily life like millions of other people.

How Was Bingo Invented?

It is extremely difficult to say who invented bingo, but we know it is a mixture of lottery, keno, and raffle games. Although all variations of those games have a common past, we will focus on bingo and how it evolved through time until it became available at the verified and trusted bingo sites for UK players.

Il Gioco del Lotto d’Italia – Bingo During the Renaissance

To answer the question of where did bingo originate from, we need to turn our attention to Italy in the year 1530 (during the Renaissance). Back then, the old name for bingo was Il Gioco del Lotto d’Italia (which means The Clearance of The Lot of Italy), and the game had several variations. This is where the basic rules and elements of the game of chance appeared – players picking numbers, the wheel used in the draw, and the prize announcement.

France & Its Le Loto

France has always played a large part in modern trends, and that is where the history of bingo continues. The French people quickly got used to the Italian game, and by 1778s, Le Lotto was the aristocrat’s passion. This is where the French bingo origin took a turn and reshaped into the modern national lottery.

Loto – The German Children Game

While it spread to the west, the bingo also spread to the north. In Germany, lotto, loto or bingo was a children’s game that gained popularity in the late 1770s. This is the point at the origin of bingo, where the scorecards had numbers, letters, images, or words. That is how a wagering game was transformed into an educational tool in many countries.

UK’s 90-Ball Bingo

Bingo Balls Cradle

The greatest evolution in the bingo game history happened in the United Kingdom and its colonies. Not long after its invention, the game arrived in the UK, and by the 18th century, it had a stable fanbase and devoted players. It was the only permitted gambling during World War I in the British armed services. Men and women in uniform could participate in the Royal Navy tombola (1880), House (1900), or Housy Housy.

The history of bingo in the UK expands even more after WWI, and the Housey Housey wagering game spread among the population. Many shady gambling dens became a hotbed for illegal betting, so the government created the first modern gambling laws, and this way stopped illegal gambling. This is also the time when many of the funny bingo calls were invented. This boosted people’s curiosity, and the game spread faster than before.

The UK’s Betting and Gaming Act legalised bingo games in 1968, which led to the creation of the 90-Ball National Bingo Game. In the following decades, everyone wanted to try fun community engaging entertainment. The interest and dedication brought improvements to the scorecards, drawing mechanisms and the invention of the bingo dauber.

The bingo halls where players could buy 90-ball bingo cards and play alongside their friends and strangers will always be a trend, but the busy modern life left less time for fun. That is when the electronic random number generator (RNG) helped with faster games and made easy playing at the top online bingo slots sites.

No matter how times change, bingo is one of the most played games in the UK. The proof is the over £1 billion total prize money won by different players and delivered by the National Bingo Game. The largest bingo prize was won by a single player on the 23rd of March 2008. Soraya Lowell (Motherwell, North Lanarkshire) played bingo at The National Game at Club 3000 (Coatbridge) and collected £1,167,795.

USA’s 75-Ball Bingo

American Bingo

The UK may have the bingo game with the largest number of balls, but the American bingo with 75 balls is just as entertaining. You already know where bingo originates, but the USA is where it got its modern name.

The original game in the Americas was the familiar mixture of keno and lottery. It became popular during the Prohibition Era and the Great Depression (the 1930s) under the name beano, screeno, or keno. People gathered in motion-picture theatres, carnivals, halls, and other rooms big enough to hold the many players and the game’s equipment.

During the 1920s, the announced numbers were marked with beans, which was why people called the game Beano. A player scored a win, and in his excitement, instead of ‘Beano!’ he yelled ‘Bingo!’. Edwin S. Lowe (a New York toy salesman) liked the idea to call the USA game ‘Bingo’ and started manufacturing scorecards with columns labelled B-I-N-G-O.

Since then, many players can confirm that happiness is yelling ‘Bingo!’ because it always brings a nice prize. Players in the USA love the 75-ball bingo so much that National Bingo Day is on the 27th of June. The new easy to pronounce name eased the spreading of the game worldwide.

Variety of Bingo Games

Bingo Ticket and Dabber

We spoke so much about bingo history and who invented bingo that it will be impossible not to mention the bingo versions anyone can try. You can find them at the land-based bingo halls, churches, retirement homes, and online at 5 pound deposit bingo sites. This simple game creates powerful emotions, so we remind you to keep calm when playing bingo:

  • 🎱 90-Ball Bingo (aka traditional UK Bingo)
  • 🎱 80-Ball Bingo (aka Shutter Bingo, Coloured Rows, or Fast Gameplay)
  • 🎱 75-Ball Bingo (aka American Bingo)
  • 🎱 52-Ball Bingo (90-ball and 75-ball bingo mix)
  • 🎱 50-Ball Bingo
  • 🎱 40-Ball Bingo
  • 🎱 36-Ball Bingo
  • 🎱 30-Ball Bingo (aka Speed Bingo because it is the fastest game)

All those variations enter the history of bingo, but there are also many other bingo-based games and bingo variations popular at specific gaming locations or gambling sites. Such splendid examples are Slingo, Bingo Bongo, Bingo Roulette, 5-Line Bingo (Swedish Bingo), jackpot bingo games, VIP bingo games, and more.

The bingo history facts show that the free bingo slots are one of the popular types of wagering games players always choose to diverse their gambling experience. Besides the type of game, bettors need to choose where to play. Online casinos grant easy access, but you can’t learn the history of bingo calls or hear the new bingo number nicknames.

Online Bingo – Play Like Never B-4

Online Bingo Games

The history of bingo has a major turn point registered in the history of online gambling. The first online bingo game was held in 1996 at the Bingo Zone site and is available to players in the USA. The same year Parlay Entertainment (Canada) released Cyber Bingo.

Since the early days of the Internet, the online history of bingo has expanded with lists of games and gambling websites offering them. A major milestone occurred in 2013, with the launch of the online bingo players’ network ’15 Network’. This allowed bingo versions to evolve and enter the mobile gaming market.

From this point on, online bingo’s future became brighter than ever because the gambling industry constantly evolves. Players expect more fun, greater game diversity, and even better prizes.

History of Bingo Q&A

The history of bingo stretches over many centuries, and even though almost everything is known about the game, there are still many interesting questions to be answered. We collected some of them below, so read on and if the brief answer is not enough – click on the link, and it will take you to more information.

Why is bingo so popular?

While exploring the history of bingo, you will inevitably learn a lot about the players, their countries, and their past. Despite the differences in the customs and way of life, the bingo games are popular for their simplicity, affordability, inclusiveness, and entertainment factor. Every bingo variation brings different excitement, and every game has a winner.

When was bingo invented and by whom?

It is hard to tell exactly where bingo originated because the game has been reshaped many times. The familiar game rules were first recorded in Italy in the 16th century, but the bingo history could also begin when the game got its name at the beginning of the 20th century in the USA.

What bingo games are there?

Finding the name of the person who invented bingo might never be possible, but we are deeply grateful for their efforts. Today, there are dozens of bingo variations available at gaming halls and online casinos. The most popular types are the 75-ball and 90-ball bingo, also called American Bingo and UK bingo.

Can I play bingo online?

Since the history of bingo games proves that this is one of the highly preferred wagering games, there is no wonder why operators of online gambling sites added it to their lists. The online bingo games include all classic and new interesting bingo versions like Slingo, jackpot bingo, and other games.

Where does bingo originate from?

The lengthy bingo history points towards Italy’s bingo from 16th century, also called Il Gioco del Lotto d’Italia to be the origin of the present-day popular game. This was when the mandatory elements of the game were first recognised – scorecards with numbers, shuffling of numbered tokens and drawing the winning numbers.

When did bingo start in the UK?

The history of bingo shows that the game quickly spread throughout Europe, and by the 1770s, a large part of the United Kingdom was into it. The UK bingo games started under the name Housey Housey and evolved along with bingo worldwide. Today, the UK is one of the countries where thousands of people shout ‘Bingo!’ daily.

What was bingo originally called?

We might not know who invented bingo, but we have heard many names given to the game. A combination of the name ‘beano’ used in the USA and an excited winner led to the game’s new name – Bingo! The USA’s bingo has 75 balls and a B-I-N-G-O above the five columns on the scorecards.

Where was bingo first played?

After its creation in Italy, bingo-type games spread all across Europe. The history of bingo games shows that France’s Le Lotto is the ancestor of the present-day national lottery and bingo many French people play. After World War I, the soldiers brought the fun game to their home countries, and bingo spread worldwide.

Is bingo a gambling game?

The bingo history shows that this is one of the most popular money-based games of chance. Even so, the bingo in Germany has an alternative face that is not directed towards enrichment. In the 18th century, bingo-type cards with images, words, and numbers were used as educational tools for children. There are still such games.

What should I know about bingo?

Besides the fascinating bingo history, there is a lot to know about bingo, especially if you intend to play. People who have never tried it usually have a lot of questions and worries that stop them from playing. We answered essential bingo inquiries to help you learn the basics.

Parx Casino Approved to Build Luxury Hotel in Bensalem, Pennsylvania

Parx Casino Approved to Build Luxury Hotel in Bensalem, Pennsylvania

Bucks County Courier Times reported that after more than a decade of planning, the Parx Casino Hotel project has received approval from Bensalem Township Council to build a luxury hotel on Street Road in Bensalem. Groundbreaking is scheduled for later this year, with construction expected to be complete in 2025.

Parx Casino Hotel to Feature 300 Rooms, Rooftop Restaurant, and Presidential Suites

The 13-story hotel will include 11 floors of guest space, with 300 regular-stay rooms. A new walkway will connect the new hotel with the existing casino. The hotel will feature a restaurant in the lobby and another on the rooftop, each with a 300-seat capacity.

The restaurant will feature a show kitchen in which invited chefs will cook and lead special presentations. The rooftop floors will have a presidential suite and four other high-end suites, which will offer unobstructed views of the Philadelphia skyline. A coffee shop, spa, and fitness center will fill out the amenities.

The hotel will not feature branding and will carry the “Parx Casino Hotel” marquee. Each restaurant will be an in-house offering, with no branding. During a presentation before Bensalem Township Council, Parx Casino Chief Operating Officer John Dixon said that the 14,000-square-foot banquet hall will have a capacity of 800, making it suitable for weddings, business conferences, and small exhibits. The rooms can be subdivided, given event requirements.

Parx Casino Hotel to Attract Youth-based Groups and Family-friendly Organizations

John Dixon, the Chief Operating Officer of Parx Casino, mentioned that the size of the new Parx Casino Hotel will not allow it to compete with the Pennsylvania Convention Center in downtown Philadelphia for national conventions like the auto show or flower show. He added that the hotel would be ideal for local and regional meetings and gatherings but not suitable for large-scale events.

Dixon also noted that the hotel would not be age-restricted like the casino, which would enable the operators to market it to youth-based groups and family-friendly organizations.

Parx Casino, which opened as Philadelphia Park on December 19, 2006, has been a regional draw for many years. Parx quickly found success, generating $55.46 million in revenues in January 2023, compared to $51.81 million in revenue earned in January 2022.

It was the third-highest revenue-generating casino in Pennsylvania, where gaming is big business. In 2022, the 16 Pennsylvania casinos saw a combined $5.21 billion compared to $4.73 billion in 2021. Revenue from Parx Casino also funds Bensalem’s $300 Home Assistance Grant, which Bensalem Mayor Joe DiGirolamo said Bensalem homeowners will continue to receive in 2023. Parx also employs some 2,000 workers, making it a leading employer in Bucks County.

Rules for Players & Visitors

The Bad Kötzting Casino welcomes all visitors, but a few requirements must be followed. Don’t worry because it is nothing overdemanding. The rules are meant to make everyone’s stay pleasant and fun. Here is what you need to know before entering the casino:

  • 🎂 Legal Gambling Age: players must be over the age of 21. An exception is made for people over 18 years accompanied by someone over 21 years old. Upon entry, all visitors must show a valid photo ID (EU ID card, EU driving licence, or passport).
  • 👙 Dress Code: there is no Casino Bad Kötzting dress code, but the guests are expected to be neat and wear appropriate clothing. The unspoken casino dress code of professional players is comfortable clothes that will allow them to sit for hours without getting distracted by their appearance.
  • 💸 Tips: it is a custom (not mandatory) for a player to tip the dealer upon winning. The tip size is a chip equal to the initial stake or higher. Say “One piece for the employees”, and the croupier will put the tip in the “Troncbüchse” (the tip box) and give you the rest of the prize.

As you can see, the rules are simple and easy to follow. Another great news about gambling in Germany is that there are no winners taxes from casino prizes. This means that a player should only give a tip (recommended out of courtesy) and collect the rest of the prize upon winning.

Casino Code & Etiquette

The gambling laws in Germany regulate the licences and legal activity of the operators, but there are also many supportive documents and instructions that need to be followed. Furthermore, the casino has rules for etiquette and organisation. Here are some of them:

  • 💳 Payment Options: players in Bavarian casinos can purchase chips upon entry with cash, credit card (Mastercard, Visa, Maestro), and e-Wallets (PayPal, Klarna, giropay, V Pay)
  • 🚓 Crimes: any forms of cheating, disturbances of the peace in the casino, using counterfeit banknotes, or any other criminal violations are dealt with by the casino security and the local authorities
  • 🛑 Responsible Gambling: all operators are obligated to assist players in fighting gambling addiction. Bad Kötzting Casino also has a questionnaire for self-evaluation and self-exclusion options, and offers information about the hotline of the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) and other organisations

Ohio Gambling Regulator Has Issued $1M Penalties So Far

Ohio Gambling Regulator Has Issued $1M Penalties So Far

Since then, the gambling regulator, the Ohio Casino Control Commission, has issued a litany of penalties that has now topped $1 million. The latest operator to be booked by the watchdog is BetMGM which was slapped with a $150,000 fine on Wednesday.

Penalties Fly All Around in Ohio

In its decision, the OCCC alleges that BetMGM was among the companies to face enforcement action over failure to maintain industry standards in advertising their gambling products. Among the companies faced with a similar penalty were Barstool Sportsbook, DraftKings and Caesars Sportsbook as confirmed by the regulator early into the year.

The OCCC contended that the aforementioned companies had failed to provide proper responsible gambling messaging in their marketing and promotional inducements, leaving gamblers unaware of helpline options for one. Another issue the regulator took with the companies, including BetMGM, was what it deemed a frivolous use of the wording “risk-free” and “free,” used to describe wagers that are not necessarily “free” per se but rather compel consumers to have a second chance with the same money they have wagered.

BetMGM chief compliance officer Rhea Loney accepted the regulator’s ruling appearing before the commission on Wednesday. “BetMGM takes responsibility that we made an error, and we apologize for that error, and we’re going to remedy that,” Loney said, assuring that the company is committed to the highest responsible gambling standards in the country.

Loney has said that the company has already taken it upon itself to train employees on the issue and has sent a message to its affiliate partners. BetMGM has been deploying the GameSense program developed by British Columbia in order to help increase awareness of problem gambling and ensure that vulnerable consumers are linked with the help they need.

All Culprits Accept the Penalties – Promise to Do Better

BetMGM is not the only entity hit with a fine. All DraftKings, Caesars and BetMGM had to pay a $150,000 fine. DraftKings also bore the brunt of regulatory ire as it was forced to pay an additional $350,000 and PENN Entertainment was hit with a separate fine, which saw it pay $250,000.

The operators have accepted these penalties and acknowledge their shortcomings in the matters raised by the watchdog. This means that the total amount of penalties paid by operators in Ohio has already exceeded $1 million.

Iowa Catches Online Casino Legalization Fever in 2023

Iowa Catches Online Casino Legalization Fever in 2023

A bill filed in the Iowa General Assembly this Monday wants to see the legalization of online casino gambling in the state and expand the reach of gaming. Presently, the land-based casino industry supports 17,420 jobs and has an estimated economic impact of $2.8 billion across the 23 commercial and tribal properties in the state.

Iowa Makes Another Go at Legalizing Online Casinos

Iowa already has experience with mobile sports betting, which is available statewide, but the state may now be looking to pass further legislation, courtesy of HSB 227 filed by Rep. Bobby Kauffman. The bill seems to focus on commercial operations and suggests that each may have up to two online casino skins. In other words, there could be as many as 38 online casinos should the bill clear.

However, the bill is keen to possibly see the online industry grow a bit further, with a third skin option left with the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to decide. The IRGC would also be in charge of setting up the regulatory framework for iGaming operations.

Looking at these numbers, Iowa could easily become the biggest state in terms of online casino properties, which may lead to a rapid oversaturation given that the state’s population is only 3.37 million people. Kauffman though is confident that his proposed legislation is going to hit a bull’s eye if anything.

Awareness of the Matter Already Exists in Iowa

He previously worked on a similar proposal – HSB 604 – which was dragged through last year’s session but never actually got to a floor vote. However, Kauffman seems fairly confident that the bill served its purpose and helped raise awareness for the matter. His new pitch is similar to the 2022 bill as well.

There is a proposed initial license of $45,000 which coincides with the fee currently charged from sports betting operators that offer products online along with a $10,000 renewal fee. The tax rate is set at 6.75%, which is once again the same amount for sports betting revenue. So far as taxing iGaming operations goes, though, most states have chosen to levy the activity at a steeper rate.

Sportradar’s Q4 Performance Contributed to Strong 2022 Growth

Sportradar Received Wagering Vendor License in Massachusetts

Global sports data and technology company Sportradar Group AG announced its fourth-quarter and full-year 2022 financial results, posting revenue growth and a full-year profit decrease.

Fourth-Quarter Results

For the three months ended December 31, 2022, Sportradar reported revenue of €206.3 million ($220.7 million), up 35% year-over-year, of which 51% came from the Rest of the World (RoW) Betting segment. RoW Betting grew by 29% to €105.9 million ($113.3 million), and operations in the US accounted for €41.2 million ($44 million) in revenue, an increase of 77%.

Commenting on the quarterly results, Sportradar’s Interim chief financial officer, Ulrich Harmuth outlined the financial results as an illustration of the momentum the business had been building over the course of the year.

We demonstrated operational leverage in our business model, despite making significant investments in our products and technology, streamlined our organization to be more customer-centric, and strengthened our balance sheet by repaying our debt.

Ulrich Harmuth, CFO, Sportradar

Quarterly adjusted EBITDA was €35.1 million ($37.6 million), posting an increase of 64% compared to the last three months of 2021. Adjusted EBITDA margin was 17%, posting an increase of 300 bps from Q4 2021.

Unfavorable foreign currency exchange rates, planned pre-payments of sports league rights, taxes and restructuring costs impacted the quarterly adjusted EBITDA cash flow to minus €43.6 million ($46.6 million), almost doubling the Q4 2021 reading of €22.5 million ($24.1 million). The company prepaid its outstanding debt of €220 million ($235.4 million) and is going forward debt-free.

Full-Year Performance

Full-year revenue was €730.2 million ($781.3 million), an increase of 30% year-over-year, driven by RoW Betting which grew by 26%, and the US segment which was up 78% year-over-year. Adjusted EBITDA was €125.8 million ($134.6 million), up 23%.

We saw excellent performance across all of our key performance metrics despite challenging macroeconomic conditions including a second consecutive quarter of positive Adjusted EBITDA in the US.

Carsten Koerl, chief executive officer, Sportradar

Sportradar accounted for €10.5 million ($11.2 million) in full-year profit, down 18% from €12.8 million ($13.7 million) reported in 2021.

Sportradar ended the year with cash and cash equivalents of €243.8 million ($260.8 million) and undrawn credit facilities of €463.8 million ($496.3 million). The company also repaid €420 million ($449.4 million) of its outstanding debt.

2023 Financial Outlook

“Our continued long-term partnerships with leading global sports bodies, and innovation across new technologies such as artificial intelligence and computer vision and as important, a team passionate about delivering solutions to our clients, make us very excited about our growth in 2023 and beyond,” concluded Koerl.

Bettor Wins 75,000/1 Parlay Thanks to 96th-Minute Goal

Four men celebrating watching soccer

One lucky person won a 75,000/1 parlay bet thanks to a goal in the 96th minute. The parlay, which cost just £0.30 ($0.36), was comprised of 13 soccer game selections, spread across the second, third, and fourth tiers of professional soccer in England. Two selections were for draws, with the rest being game-winner predictions.

Parlay bets are very popular among soccer punters in particular, as they can lead to massive payouts from relatively small stakes.

Carlisle scored a winner in the 96th minute against Swindon to keep the bet alive. Ryan Edmondson was the man to thank for scoring the goal in the dying seconds of the game. The bettor won £22,380 ($26,931) from the bet he placed with William Hill.

The sportsbook operator posted details of the wager on Twitter. It is common for sportsbooks to post details of big wins as it acts as a useful way to promote their offerings and to entice new users to sign up for an account.

Tabcorp threatens legal action against Ladbrokes and Neds over gambling deal with NSW pubs | Gambling

Gambling giant Tabcorp has threatened legal action against competitors Ladbrokes and Neds as it seeks to tear up a partnership that jeopardises its lucrative monopoly in New South Wales pubs and raises the prospect of more betting ads inside venues.

The dispute highlights the increasingly competitive sports gambling industry in Australia, with companies battling for a larger share of the multibillion-dollar market. Tabcorp, traditionally known for in-store betting, is now prioritising online wagering in direct competition with Labrokes and Neds.

In October last year, Entain Australia announced a “groundbreaking new agreement” with the powerful Australian Hotels Association (AHA) to increase gambling competition inside the state’s pubs. The deal would allow Entain to promote its Ladbrokes and Neds brands and create designated zones for customers.

Tabcorp, which has an exclusive deal with the NSW government to operate retail wagering inside pubs and hotels, believes the partnership may breach its license.

The partnership also raises the prospect of more sports gambling promotions inside pubs at a time when politicians and health advocates are increasingly critical of the industry’s operations, citing “powerful evidence” of community harm.

On Wednesday, NSW supreme court justice James Stevenson ordered Tabcorp be provided with legal advice and details on how the partnership would work in practice, which would inform any legal action to stop it. This includes details on proposed “VIP Ladbrokes activation zones” or “Neds Club lounges” inside pubs.

Tabcorp successfully argued there was not enough publicly available information to confirm its suspicion the partnership would violate its license deal.

“Tabcorp will review the documents disclosed in order to assess whether or not to commence legal proceedings against Entain or AHA NSW, or both, in the supreme court,” a Tabcorp spokesman said.

The supreme court judgement reveals the AHA wrote to Tabcorp in October to stress it was “committed to supporting Tabcorp’s exclusive and long-term retail wagering licence in NSW hotels”.

“It also remains our position that none of the arrangements as announced by AHA NSW and Entain do anything to undermine Tabcorp’s retail exclusivity, nor are they in contravention of any laws, including the Unlawful Gambling Act,” the letter said.

When the partnership was announced, the AHA NSW chief executive, John Whelan, said many hotels were operating Tabcorp facilities at “significant losses” and that change was necessary.

“Today’s partnership with a world leader in Entain will finally give NSW hotels competition and choice,” Whelan said in October.

Entain Australia’s chief executive, Dean Shannon, said the partnership would allow it to “connect and communicate” with a valuable audience inside pubs.

“There is no reason why traditional cash wagering can’t coexist in a hotel, alongside an advertising sponsorship arrangement with Entain that promotes the digital offering of one of our leading brands,” Shannon said in October.

A spokesperson for Entain acknowledged the supreme court judgment “granting preliminary discover of documents on three of eight requested categories”.

“Entain is building great momentum in the rollout of its digital wagering sponsorships and is pleased with the high levels of interest from pubs across NSW,” the spokesperson said.

PokerNews Op-Ed: Veronica Brill Recognizes Those Shaping the Future of Poker

PokerNews Op-Ed: Veronica Brill Recognizes Those Shaping the Future of Poker

The opinions expressed in this publication are those of the author(s). They do not purport to reflect the opinions or views of PokerNews or its members.

When you think about the world of poker, it’s easy to see the diversity of people who make up this dynamic community. From vloggers and podcasters to prominent pros and tournament directors, there are countless individuals who contribute to the game’s popularity and growth. But amidst this community, there are a select few who stand out as true visionaries. These individuals possess a passion for the game that extends far beyond their personal experience, and they are driven by a powerful idea for the future of poker.

In this article, I’ll explore the experiences I’ve had with such people, and gain a deeper understanding of the people who are shaping the future of poker.

Letting Lose on the Industry

A little over a year ago, I received an unexpected message on Twitter from a mutual friend in Cleveland. It turns out that the new poker room manager at JACK Casino was interested in having me host the grand opening of their brand-new poker room. I was booking a few grand opening gigs at the time so I was intrigued, but also a bit skeptical – what could this new poker room offer that others didn’t already have?

As it turned out, the new manager had an impressive background in the industry. He had spent time working at the renowned Aria casino in Las Vegas under the guidance of Sean McCormack, one of the most respected figures in the world of poker. With McCormack’s high standards for customer service and professionalism, it was clear that this new manager was bringing some serious talent to the table.

That manager was Chris Lose, a native of Cleveland who had decided to return home to take on the challenge of running the new poker room at JACK Casino. Despite the obstacles and uncertainties that come with launching a new poker room, Chris was confident in his ability to deliver an exceptional experience for players. And as I would soon discover, he also had a big vision for poker.

During our first conversation, he was brimming with enthusiasm about the brand-new poker room that had just been completed on the second floor. He had big plans for a grand opening that would not only showcase the room’s spacious capacity but also promote inclusivity in the Cleveland poker scene. Over the course of the next year, I had the pleasure of returning to the casino several times, and each time I found Chris hard at work on his mission to make the game more welcoming and diverse.

He was passionate about supporting women in poker, championing the LGBTQ+ community, and creating a fun and comfortable atmosphere for all players. It was clear that he had his finger on the pulse of what the community wanted, with a mix of low and medium-stakes games and plenty of PLO action to keep things interesting. As he continued to pursue his vision for the future of poker in Cleveland, it was impossible not to feel energized and inspired by his dedication and enthusiasm.

“He set his sights on attracting the biggest names in poker to the new room, with high-profile tours making it a regular stop on their schedules.”

With a bold vision for the future of poker in Cleveland, Chris was determined to make his mark on the industry. He set his sights on attracting the biggest names in poker to the new room, with high-profile tours making it a regular stop on their schedules. He was diligently working with the casino’s legal team to try to make the poker room a site for vlogging.

And he didn’t stop there – Chris knew that players were looking for more than just big guarantees. He wanted to create an unforgettable experience that included innovative game formats like double board bomb pots, ensuring that every player who walked through the door would leave with a sense of excitement and anticipation. With his sights set on becoming a competitive market for traveling poker grinders, Chris did everything in his power to make the JACK Casino poker room the go-to destination for players within traveling range of Ohio.

I sadly found out that Chris has recently resigned from his position at JACK Casino. As a poker player, I know firsthand the difference between playing in a room that is truly dedicated to providing the best possible experience for players, and one that is simply focused on hitting its financial targets. Chris was the driving force behind the poker room at JACK Casino, and his passion and dedication were evident in every aspect of its operation.

His departure is a blow to the Cleveland poker community, and to players like me who had come to appreciate his vision for the future of the game. While I am saddened by this news, I am hopeful that Chris will soon find a new home in the poker world – one that recognizes and appreciates his commitment to excellence and his unwavering focus on the needs of players.

Industry Insiders: Chris Lose Shares Legendary JRB Story

The One Who Bets the Most Wins

Women are significantly underrepresented in poker. This can be attributed to a variety of factors, including social norms and the belief that poker needs high-risk tolerance that is better suited for men. One woman has made it her job to change that terrain.

Jamie Kerstetter had already made a name for herself before I had ever met her. She was featured on Poker Night in America and hosted the Run it Once podcast. Jamie could have easily taken a sponsorship deal, pocketed a yearly poker Twitter personality GPI award, and promoted herself into vast monetary gains full of Instagram posts, Florida casino commercials, and poker tour stops. But instead, Jamie knew the game not only needed fresh faces, but also needed more representation by women.

Jamie Kerstetter
Jamie Kerstetter

The interesting thing about Jamie is that she truly understands that marketing products to men and women require a different approach. Harvard Business Review once wrote about a phenomenon called “Gender Contamination,” which occurs when men and women become uncomfortable when a product that symbolizes their gender is extended to appeal to another gender. Jamie recognized this issue and changed the way poker was marketed to women. She began hosting women-only meet-up games in a comfortable setting, where women could learn and play poker without feeling intimidated or out of place.

These women-only meet-up games provide a supportive and encouraging environment for women to learn and grow their poker skills. Jamie understands that if women sit at a table to learn to play HORSE for the first time at her meet-up game, they will be met with patience and acceptance. She has also been the driving force behind the WPT women’s $25/50 televised cash game, which has given women much-needed recognition in the game.

As someone who has played in the WPT at Wynn Las Vegas, I can attest to the importance of Jamie’s efforts. During our $25/50 televised game, I was outplayed and gladly gave my $5k to the crushers I was up against (or Jamie had pocket kings vs. my jacks when I was all in for my last $1,800). These types of games give us all more recognition in the game and it’s important that we are included.

Jamie’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse poker community is making waves in the industry and inspiring us all. She has shown that with hard work, determination, and a willingness to think outside the box, we can break down barriers and create a more welcoming and supportive poker community.

Make Poker Great Again

Poker has come a long way since its early days when gut feeling and a lot of gambling were the keys to success. With the advent of solvers and advanced strategies, the game has become more complex and competitive. However, this shift towards a more serious and professional approach has also made recreational poker less fun and enjoyable for many players. But one tour is changing that – the Run Good Poker Series (RGPS).

The RGPS is the brainchild of Tana Karn, a Buffalo slot professional and poker enthusiast who understands the foundation of the game and the regular guy who wants to play without breaking the bank. Tana has created a traveling community disguised as a poker tour, where players can come together and enjoy the game in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Tana Karn
RGPS President Tana Karn

I had the pleasure of being an ambassador for Run Good last year at the Graton stop, and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had outside of Cleveland. The atmosphere was electric, with everyone getting t-shirts and trying to get the bounties placed on the ambassadors in the tournaments. There were tons of pictures, laughs, and good vibes all around.

What sets the RGPS apart is its focus on creating a fun and inclusive environment for all players. The tour caters to recreational players who want to play mid-level events and have a great time. The emphasis is on having fun, meeting new people, and building a community around the game we all love.

Tana Karn’s vision for the RGPS, which recently won the Global Poker Award for “Mid-Major Tour of the Year” for the third time, has breathed new life into the game. By focusing on creating a fun and inclusive environment for all players, the tour is attracting a new generation of players who value community and enjoyment. Congrats on the GPI award!

Visionaries like Chris Lose, Jamie Kerstetter, and Tana Karn are crucial to the evolution of poker. They work hard to create a more inclusive and fun atmosphere for all players and have breathed new life into the game and attracted a new generation of enthusiasts. These trailblazers have shown that with hard work, determination, and a willingness to think outside the box, we can break down barriers and create a more welcoming and supportive poker community.
