FanDuel Doubles Down on Initiatives amid Problem Gambling Awareness Month

FanDuel Doubles Down on Initiatives amid Problem Gambling Awareness Month

FanDuel will highlight the importance of safer gambling through a series of initiatives, the company announced. The leading NA operator will also donate money to the National Council on Problem Gambling and other organizations to further support a healthier gambling ecosystem.

As announced, FanDuel will donate $100,000 to the NCPG, supporting its Agility Grants program. The program provides funding to nonprofits across the USA, helping them prevent problem gambling in regions without dedicated safer gambling services.

Keith Whyte, executive director of the NCPG, praised FanDuel’s commitment.

FanDuel’s commitment to supporting a spectrum of services from problem gambling prevention to responsible gambling education is a reflection of their dedication to building a safe and sustainable gambling ecosystem.

Keith Whyte, exec director, NCPG

FanDuel will also expand its support of the International Center for Responsible Gaming, funding problem gambling research in the United States. The ICBG hopes to better understand addictive tendencies in order to be able to better tackle them. Arthur Paikowsky, the center’s president, welcomed FanDuel’s backing.

FanDuel will also continue to work with various professional sports leagues, such as the NBA and the PGA Tour.

In addition to supporting various organizations, FanDuel will also leverage its ambassadors to promote responsible gambling. Craig Carton, one of the company’s RG ambassadors, is currently on a “Responsible Gaming College Tour.” Carton visits college campuses across the northeast, educating young adults on how to avoid gambling harm and will produce exclusive video material on the topic.

Seven-division boxing champion Amanda Serrano, another Fanduel RG ambassador, will share video content on her social media. Serrano and Carton will encourage customers to pick FanDuel because of its Play Well tools, which allow players to regulate their own behavior.

During Problem Gambling Awareness Month, it’s even more important to remind those who choose to wager of the tools and resources available to them to help stay in control of the way they play.

Amanda Serrano, RG ambassador, FanDuel

FanDuel’s Play Well suite includes a variety of tools. By using them, players can set deposit limits, wager limits, maximum wager size limits and time limits. In addition, players can use the Time Out option to take a break from betting.

Howe Promised FanDuel Will Remain Responsible

FanDuel’s chief executive officer, Amy Howe, addressed the new initiatives.

This March marks the 20th anniversary of Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and we will once again use this as a moment to demonstrate how FanDuel aims to set the standard for what it means to be a responsible operator.

Amy Howe, CEO, FanDuel

Howe concluded that the collaborations with partners and ambassadors will help FanDuel continue to spread awareness and encourage players to play safely.

Do APs Cheat? – Gambling With An Edge

Putting Bills Into a Machine

At the recent World Game Protection seminars, casino expert Sal Piacente said: “Advantage players don’t want to cheat and aren’t doing anything illegal, but instead use their minds to beat the game, whether watching to see if a dealer exposes a hole card or by card counting.”

I’m not so sure.

For any group of 1,000 advantage players, you’ll have 1,000 different conclusions on how close to the line — or how far over the line — they are willing to go to collect money from casinos and others.

Richard Munchkin has said on the air that he and the teams he belonged to used electronic devices to help them play blackjack when it was legal, but when it became illegal, they stopped. I believe him. But I also believe that there are still APs today who use illegal devices to assist them in beating casinos.

Piacente spoke about card counting and hole carding. Those are legal maneuvers in many, but not all, jurisdictions. Try card counting in London and they’ll likely keep your money if you lose and not cash your chips when you win. Get caught hole carding at certain tribal casinos in Michigan and elsewhere, and you probably won’t be paid.

In video poker, most casinos say you can only play on your own player’s card and not anyone else’s. I’ve successfully played on both my card and my wife’s card at many casinos. I don’t consider that cheating. Occasionally a casino tells me I shouldn’t do that anymore, and when that happens I honor their directions.

There are players, though, who regularly play on 20 or 60 different cards. They find casinos that give generous mailers and other benefits for a minimum amount of play. I believe this to be fraudulent. I see this as very different from me playing on my wife’s card. Clearly others don’t make the same distinction I do.

I’m not claiming that I’m a saint. I’ve written about various things I’ve done in casinos and elsewhere that don’t pass the “smell test.” Most I wouldn’t do today.

Many players have the attitude of, “If you can get away with it, it’s not cheating,” while others have a more restrictive code of, “There is right and wrong and one should not confuse the two.”

In no way am I arguing that all APs cheat. That’s nonsense. Many of my best friends are APs and I trust them completely. But there are many other APs I do not trust. Richard once said about a famous AP, “I like him, but I would never do business with him.”

I’ve been burned before by strong players. Just because you can count cards successfully doesn’t mean you’re trustworthy. With that said, however, I do believe that there are a large number of players who win just by using their brain and skills without cheating at all. That’s how I like to think of myself — although I know that I’ve not always risen to that standard. But that’s my goal and I keep trying to achieve it.

New Jersey Committee Approves Addiction Treatment Bill

Pariplay Boosts New Jersey Presence via Resorts Digital Gaming Deal

New Jersey lawmakers plan to introduce a problem gambling measure that would see the state step up its efforts in the war on gambling-related crime and addiction. Details about the program are outlined in Bill A420, which received the unanimous approval of the state’s Tourism, Gaming and Arts Committee.

The measure, sponsored by Ralph Caputo, would see the foundation of a Gambling Treatment Diversion Court Pilot Program. The program will address the alarming gambling harm rates in the Garden State, as legislators seek to combat problem gambling and gambling-related crimes.

The program, the bill reads, will “have as a purpose the treatment of persons determined to be affected by an addictive disorder related to gambling and who committed a crime for which they have been convicted in furtherance or as a result of the gambling.”

Under the bill, the Administrative Office of the Courts will administer a gambling court that will be established in the state.

In addition to treating existing problem gamblers, the bill would also protect all players by prohibiting sports betting adverts in certain locations, such as learning establishments. High school districts, meanwhile, will be required to teach their students about the dangers of unrestrained gambling in health classes.

Caputo Is Bullish on Protecting the Youth

Although Caputo is known to have a favorable stance on gambling, he is a firm opponent of the proliferation of gambling advertisements and irresponsible gambling. He hopes that the new measure will help New Jersey bring problem gambling and gambling crime rates down.

Caputo’s measures are centered on young adults, which are the most vulnerable people according to numerous studies. Researchers have demonstrated that the impulsivity of young people often causes them to lose money to gambling and develop addictions while chasing losses.

Because of his good intentions, Caputo and his measures have gained the backing of many addiction experts and former addicts.

Some of Caputo’s allies, however, are still divided on how New Jersey should tackle gambling ads. While some claim that the state should adopt a harsher stance on ads, others argue that lawmakers should be moderate in their approach. The proponents of advertising argue that the state, which benefits a lot from gambling taxes, should not bar operators from promoting their products.

Speaking about gambling in New Jersey, the state regulator just published information about the market’s performance in February. As it turns out, gambling revenue in the Garden State increased by 10.4% year-on-year.

Trainee Lawyer Embezzles Money to Repay Gambling Debt

Trainee Lawyer Embezzles Money to Repay Gambling Debt

The ruse ended when a regular audit brought to light a couple of suspicious payments. The 31-year-old Tauseef Sadeeq couldn’t come up with plausible explanations when questioned, leading to a deeper investigation, ending with Sadeeq being sentenced to prison time.

Sadeeq Won’t Be Practicing Law Anymore

He was the first-ever trainee at the law firm, and his ruse was going on for slightly over a year before he got caught. He was embezzling money from client compensations on 20 separate occasions by providing his own bank account to insurance companies, instead of the law firm’s account. His deception was uncovered in 2021 when the firm let him go and pressed charges.

The fraudulent transactions took place between February 1, 2020, and March 5, 2021. During this time, the company was crippled by the global pandemic, and Sadeeq was apparently amassing gambling debts, which he was reportedly paying off with the embezzled money. He pleaded guilty to all 20 counts of fraud and was sentenced to three years of prison.

The Bolton Crown Court also heard how his actions affected the law firm. The financial harm that Sadeeq imposed compounded with the difficulties brought about by the pandemic. Things took a turn for the worse when news of the situation broke out because clients started walking away. As a result of all this eight other people were let go and the company’s financial situation was seriously threatened.

The fraud that Sadeeq pulled to pay off his gambling addiction’s consequences, cost him not only three years in prison but also his budding career. He was entrusted enough by the company to move from a paralegal to the first-ever trainee and on his way to full qualification. However, breaking this trust is now costing him dearly.

Problem Gambling Is a Controversial Topic

A recent problem gambling research in the UK showed that problem gambling rates in the country are relatively stable at 0.2%. The results might be surprising for some, as reforms in UK’s gambling laws have been a hot topic for quite some time now, and problem gambling is often being mentioned when condemning the delays in implementing changes.

However, the research largely shows that problem gambling rates are indeed dropping, albeit slowly. The Betting and Gambling Council (BGC) commented that this is probably profoundly disappointing for “anti-gambling prohibitionists”, as BGC chief executive Michael Dugher put it. “Their alarmist demands are not backed up by the evidence”, Dugher said.

The problem with gambling addiction is still serious, however, and people are often turning to stealing or other crimes to fund their bad habits, and not just in the UK. A US church employee embezzled almost $600,000 to fund her gambling addiction. The fraud, and the employee’s addiction, had been going on for more than 13 years, showing that the problem can be very persistent for people.

France Reg Flexes Delisting Muscle, Australia Adds to List of Blocked Online Casinos

France Reg Flexes Delisting Muscle, Australia Adds to List of Blocked Online Casinos

France’s gambling regulator, l’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) has issued blocking and delisting orders against online gambling sites and has created and published a public blacklist in the form of a downloadable CSV spreadsheet of illegal gambling sites while the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has ordered eight more sites to be blocked, including an advertiser as well as gambling operators.

The French blacklist can be found through a link on the government’s official announcement page (here). It includes well over 500 entries, most of which are redirects or mirrors of sites that were obviously targeting players in markets the operators were not welcome in with operators such as VegasPlus accounting for nearly 10% of the total through more than 45 unique URLs relying on various reiterations of the core name.

Obvious Attempted Circumventions

MaChance casino accounted for more than 50 iterations while Unique / WinUnique clocked nearly 50 entries.

The internal list shared with legal authorities, certain operators, and internet service providers in France has tracked 532 websites from over 150 operators since June of last year but has finally been made public, albeit in a non-user-friendly format. The list will be updated monthly according to the ANJ.

Several months before the then-nascent list was compiled, the regulator was given extraordinary powers to block or demand the blocking of gambling websites as well as the power to delist them through requests or demands delivered to search engines and other indexing databases.

Legal censorship in the name of the public good is a craft the French regulatory body is perfecting with each new development and the ANJ no longer has to wade through 4-6 months of red tape to get the job done. Now, they can simply request that ISPs (internet service providers) block the sites after a quick consultation with an administrative judge, and the marketing websites as well as any known iterations of the gambling domains can be blocked within 30-60 days.

Only about 18 online gambling websites are sanctioned by the government in France as well as internationally in French-administered jurisdictions while La Française des Jeux enjoys an exclusive monopoly on lotteries and related games throughout French law-administered governments worldwide.

Google addresses delisting thusly: “Google may temporarily or permanently remove sites from its index and search results if it believes it is obligated to do so by law; if the sites do not meet Google’s quality guidelines, or for other reasons.”

A ruling by the European Court of Justice, the EU’s highest court confirmed in 2011 that France’s monopoly on horse race betting was justified and legal as long as its purpose was to prevent harm to the public and was applied in a consistent manner. The case (a law allowing Pari Mutuel Urbain a monopoly on horse-race betting) set the stage for further breaks in anti-monopoly law interpretations and upset the assured competition among member states throughout Europe.

The ANJ stated on its website last Wednesday: “Indeed, when a French Internet user plays on an illegal site (for example, in France, all online casino sites are illegal, no casino license can be granted under the legal framework in force), it exposes you to multiple risks:

  • Collection of personal data;
  • Payment fraud;
  • Installation of malicious computer programs on the computer or mobile phone without the knowledge of the player;
  • Frequent non-payment of winnings;
  • Absence of any measure to prevent excessive gambling and underage gambling;
  • Total absence of legal recourse in the event of a dispute with the site.

There are no known empirical data that shows the French are any more vulnerable to those risks than players in any other jurisdiction. The government relies on code enforcement on the supply side and the statements above to dissuade French gamblers from straying from the French-approved sites. Online gamblers in France are not subject to criminal penalties.

Australia Continues Crackdown on Unlicensed Sites.

As is the case in France, gamblers in Australia are not subject to criminal penalties. However, operators that offer unlicensed services to citizens can be punished civilly and criminally if they find themselves within reach of the law. All publicly traded companies have left the market, yet private companies continue to serve the market as Australians are among the most passionate and prolific gamblers in the world.

Offering online gambling services in Australia is not actually illegal as long as an operator is licensed in a state or territory. However, none have developed a framework nor issued any licenses for casino gambling.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has issued new orders for another handful of gambling sites to be blocked by Australian ISPs from allowing residents to access the websites.

As has often been the case in the past, the order affects not only illegal operators but their promoters as well. The latest batch of names includes Casino Jax, Kosmonaut Casino, Mirax Casino, N1 Bet Casino, Rolling Slots, Slotozen, and Wild Fortune Casino as well as an affiliate website that was purportedly directly marketing to Australian players.

The regulatory body has blocked well over 700 gambling websites since the Gambling Act Amendment of 2001 was strengthened in 2017.

Aspers Casino Westfield in Stratford, London, is set to become a hotbed of amateur poker action when the Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT) descends on the British capital for the UK & Ireland Amateur Poker Championship. Players from all over the United Kingdom and Ireland will compete in a £120 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament for the right to call themselves the UK & Ireland champion of amateur poker.

Although each starting flight is a freezeout, you can fire one bullet in each of the two Day 1s. However, should you navigate your way through to Day 2 from Day 1A and then Day 1B, your first stack is forfeited.

In addition to any prize money won, the top three finishers get their hands on the famous APAT bronze, silver, and gold medals. Martin Kalinov walked away with the title, a gold APAT medal, and £5,000 for his victory, after defeating Lee Houghton heads-up. Houghton received £3,400 plus a silver medal, while Gary McBride netted £2,500 and a bronze medal after bowing out in third.
