The Ontario Poker Championships on partypoker Ontario came to a close today, which wrapped up a busy couple of weeks for poker players in Ontario.

Residents of the Canadian province have been able to enjoy ONSCOOP on PokerStars Ontario, The Festival on 888poker, and the Ontario Poker Championships on partypoker Ontario over the last month, where all fingers point to a booming scene.

“zackcress77” took first place in the event Ontario Poker Championships #118-H $265 Main Event PKO: $50K Gtd.

They cashed out the first prize of $4,192 plus $7,459 in bounties for a total of $11651. It took them two full days of play to beat the field of 149 entries. In the end, they won the crown after beating “PleaseAndThankYou” in heads-up play.

Big winners at the Ontario Poker Championships

The low-stakes main event—Ontario Poker Championships #118-L $33 Main Event PKO: $10K Gtd—went to “Jeanson204” who cashed in $1,217 worth of bounties and a $757 first prize.

“Snoozing” bagged third in the $265 Main Event PKO, and won four other events. “weiser1”, who came seventh, managed the same feat.

A few other notable multi-event winners included “Joe Stapleton” and “Alex Schaefer”.

One of “Alex Schaefer’s” wins was the Ontario Poker Championships #53 $150 The Big Sunday 150: $25K Gtd. This was the second biggest prize pool of the series, despite failing to hit its guarantee. “Alex Schaefer” took home $2,079 for first and $3,233 in bounties for their first-place finish win.

On Tuesday night, Episode 11 of High Stakes Poker Season 10 aired on PokerGO. It featured the same lineup as the previous episode, which saw Jean-Robert Bellande become a magnet for pocket aces.

Others in the game included Daniel Negreanu, Andrew Robl, Jennifer Tilly, Stanley Tang, Stanley Choi, and Eric Persson, who was recently a guest on the PokerNews Podcast.

It was technically a $200/$400 no-limit hold’em cash game, but all players agreed to a mandatory $800 straddle.

Here’s how things stacked up at the start of the episode:

Robl Fails to Empty the Clip

Persson put on an $800 straddle and Choi raised to $2,200 first to act with the 6♥5♥. Negreanu called two spots over holding the K♦J♣ and Robl three-bet to $11,500 holding the Q♦8♦ on the button. Bellande just called out of the small blind with his A♥K♥, and action folded back to Choi, who opted to call.

Negreanu released his hand and three players went to a flop of 7♥9♥7♠. JRB checked his flush draw, as did Choi, who actually had a straight flush draw. Robl continued for $10,000, Bellande called, and Choi did the same to see the 9♣ on the turn.

Two more checks on the double-paired board saw Robl bet $35,000, but he couldn’t shake JRB, who called. Choi got out of the way and the 4♣ completed the board on the river. With $138,300 in the pot, Bellande checked and Robl thought for a bit before conceding, “Alright, I’m going to give it up.”

He checked and JRB took down the six-figure pot with ace-high.

“I almost shoved it,” Robl lamented.

“I Can Either Go Home or Reload”

While the table was busy telling stories about the late Sam Grizzle, a big hand developed when Robl straddled and JRB looked down at the K♦K♣ first to act. He raised to $3,000 and Tang called with the Q♦J♥ before Persson did the same from the cutoff with the 7♣5♣. Choi called from the button with his Q♥5♥ and then Tilly looked down at the A♦K♠ in the small blind and popped it to $32,000.

With action back on Bellande, he asked Tilly for a count on her stack and then four-bet to $78,000. Action folded back to Tilly and she double-checked her cards before announcing, “All in.”

JRB snap-called and the duo opted to run it twice for the $357,000 pot. The 10♣4♣5♦ flop on the first run was no help to Tilly, and neither was the 9♦ turn nor Q♠ river.

On the second, the 7♠10♥7♥ flop bricked for Tilly, as did the 6♦ turn as well as the J♠ river. With that, JRB scooped the pot.

“This is very sad,” said Tilly, sending over her chips. “I can either go home or reload.”

She ultimately decided to rebuy for $100,000.

Negreanu Tries to Set Up Bellande

Negreanu straddled to $800 and Robl put on the double straddle to $1,600 when JRB raised to $5,000 with the 9♠9♦. Tilly called from the big blind with the 9♣7♣ and Negreanu looked down at the K♠K♥ in the straddle before making it $25,000 to go.

Robl folded, Bellande called, and Tilly got out of the way to make it heads-up action to the 3♦8♠J♥ flop. Negreanu continued for another $25,000 and JRB flicked in a cranberry chip call. The K♣ turn gave Negreanu top set and he tried to set a trap by checking.

JRB didn’t take the bait though and checked it back. Likewise, on the Q♥ river Negreanu checked for a second time and JRB did the same. With that, Negreanu pulled in a pot worth $107,200

Battle of the Stanley’s

In one of the last hands of the episode, the straddle was one when Tang raised to $2,000 with the Q♠6♠ and Choi called with the J♠10♣ in the small blind. Robl came along from the straddle with the J♥8♠ and the flop fell 9♠10♠J♣.

Two checks saw Tang bet $5,000 with his spade flush draw and Choi, who had checked top two pair, check-raised to $13,000. Robl folded top pair with an open-ended straight draw and Tang moved all in for $53,600. Choi called and the two agreed to run it twice for the $114,000 pot.

Neither the 2♥ turn nor 4♣ river on the first run helped Tang, but the Q♦ turn on the second opened up a lot of options. Unfortunately for Tang, the 2♣ river was a brick and he watched the entire pot pushed to Choi.

What Are the Differences Between Live vs. Online?

Game Pace

The game’s pace is a significant difference between live and online poker tournaments. In live tournaments, the pace of the game can be slower, with players taking their time to make decisions, chips being counted out, and the dealer shuffling and dealing with the cards.

Social Interaction

Playing in person, you can pick up on tells, whereas that’s impossible when behind a computer screen. Banfield identifies that when he sits down at the table, he wants to discover who the fish at the table are and who are the stronger opponents. But how does he do this?

The two factors Banfield considers when making a mental tag on an opponent are:

When it comes to betting, a weaker opponent will limp into lots of pots, and when they have a strong hand, they will often raise big to somewhere between 3-4 big blinds. These players will often be passive and less inclined to make big bluffs.

Banfield also notes that taking note of someone’s appearance is also a useful tip for differentiating player types. For example, if someone is being talkative, having a few beers and having a good time, then you can assume that they’re on the recreational side of the game. However, if someone is wearing blacked-out sunglasses and is being more quiet and stoic, then you can guess that they’re a reg and someone who takes poker very seriously.

Taking in your surroundings is really important in live poker, as you don’t have a HUD as you can get online. So you really need to break down the behaviours you see at the table to get an idea of who you are up against. This will help you make better decisions and hopefully make more money in the long run.

How Should Our Strategies Change in Live Poker?

As discussed above, one of the first things you want to do is find the fish at the table and discover who the regs are.

The number one rule in live poker for Banfield is that when playing against fish, you always want to go for value. If you know someone is a calling station, you want to bluff them less and value bet against them more.

Know That Bluffs are Less Likely

Banfield points out that in live poker, there are lots of scared players, and as a result, there is a lot less bluffing when playing live versus online. Three-bets before the flop usually consists of the strongest hands, and check-raises are more weighted to value hands than bluffs, so you should tread with caution.

Against weaker players, big river bets are often nutted, and they usually have it. A good rule of thumb is that when a weak player bets, they have it, and when they check, they don’t.

This was the WPT’s first time back in India since 2019 and only the third time visiting the sub-continent ever.

The WPT Prime India Main Event was the final event of a week-long festival that saw players from all over the world converge on Panaji on the West Coast of India. From April 12-18, players took part in 15 tournaments aboard the Deltin Royale Casino. However, none were as prestigious as the Main Event.

The WPT Prime India Main Event saw 857 entrants put up the ₹65,000 ($792) buy-in over the course of three Day 1s. The event set a new record for Indian poker with a total prize pool of ₹50,648,700 ($617,377).

Day 2 saw the field whittled down to the final nine, with all nine guaranteed at least ₹860,000 ($10,508).

Chowdhury came to the final table with a small chip lead and 41 big blinds. Since the next four players all had at least 38 big blinds each, it was really anyone’s game. This was the theme of the day.

Even during heads-up play with Amit Tejura, there was a point where the two players’ stacks came within one big blind of each other. However, in the end, Chowdhury managed to pull ahead.

After a long heads-up back and forth, the hammer fell. With blinds at 250k/500k/500k, Chowdhury limped from the button. Tejura’s raised to 1.5 million, and Chowdhury shoved. Tejura put his last 6.8 million in the middle, and the players turned their cards over.

Tejura was ahead with his ace-six suited against Chowdhury’s king-queen. Neither player connected on the flop or turn, for Tejura to lower his head, hiding his eyes in the crook of his elbow.

As a result, he did not see the king fall on the river, knocking him out of the tournament in second place for ₹5,775,000 ($70,560).
