Kawhi Leonard’s Sister Sentenced to Life in Prison for Pechanga Casino Murder

Pechanga Resort & Casino Sign

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Timothy F. Freer has sentenced two women — including the sister of Los Angeles Clippers’ forward Kawhi Leonard — to life in prison for the 2019 murder of 84-year-old Afaf Assad at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

Barstool Sports writer Jeff Nadu took to Twitter with a photo of Leonard’s sister Kimesha Williams after Judge Freer sentenced her and Candace Townsell on Friday.

According to The Press-Enterprise, Freer said a statement Williams’ attorney read on her behalf saying that she was “not responsible” for the death of the elderly woman was “laughable.”

She was left on a bathroom floor with her head exploding.”

“She was left on a bathroom floor with her head exploding. A casino bathroom, where people go to urinate and defecate and do God knows what else. That’s how her life ended.”

Of the two Moreno Valley women, Williams was the one who violently assaulted Assad while Townsell acted as lookout. Assad’s purse containing $1,000 was never recovered. According to a filing by Riverside County Senior Deputy District Attorney, Marcus Garret, Townsell “celebrated by skipping and waving her arms while fleeing the murder scene.”

The two women have been awaiting sentencing since being charged in 2019. Now they know they’re heading to prison for life and with no possibility of parole.

Problem Gambling & Distracted Driving

Preventing the Link Between Crime & Problem Gambling

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving was responsible for the death of 3,142 people in 2020.[1] This April, the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (FCCG) is not only honoring National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and highlighting the correlation between gambling preoccupations and distracted driving, but we are also focusing on sharing ways to keep you safe on the road.

One of the major signs of a gambling problem is a constant preoccupation with placing bets, checking online wagers, and finding additional funds with which to gamble. This never-ending brain chatter inherently leads to compulsive gamblers being very distracted while completing daily activities, including driving. Whether they are driving to a gambling facility and anticipating their experiences there, leaving a casino and ruminating on their losses, or listening to the radio for updates on sports bets, gamblers’ minds are everywhere but the road ahead. As those who gamble deal with pending consequences of their losses and the ramifications, they may have on those they love, exhaustion and desperation can be a dangerous combination as they make their way to their destination.

Studies show that problem gambling has a similar effect on the brain as alcohol, however when someone crashes their car after compulsively gambling, they normally don’t classify it as what it is — impaired driving. [2] Compulsive gamblers often feel a loss of control so if you ever do and find yourself walking to your car, stop yourself, go back in and talk with someone there or better yet call or text FCCG’s Your One Sure Thing 888-ADMIT IT for help in that moment. Someone is there 24/7 to support and help you find what you need to stay safe.

Exacerbating the issue, online and mobile gambling have taken driving distractions to a new level. Texting and driving is a major and growing issue for today’s population, from drivers and passengers to pedestrians, and checking online bets, stocks/cryptocurrency trading apps, or even playing online casino games while behind the wheel can lead to fatal consequences.

How to Prevent Distracted Driving Due to Gambling Preoccupations

Put your phone away – Distracted driving and phone usage go hand in hand. If the temptation to check online bets, sports results, or other apps is too much to resist, a good strategy is to leave cellphones out of reach while driving. Place your phone in the trunk of your car to ensure you are not able to check it from the driver’s seat.

Listen to support materials in audio format – Available through the Problem Gambling HelpLine, the FCCG’s A Chance for Change Recovery Workbooks can be provided in audio format, allowing gamblers to listen to supportive content while driving. With series available for seniors, youth gamblers and even loved ones of problem gamblers, you can arm yourself with knowledge and practical tips to manage and recover from problem gambling.

If you or someone you know could be at risk due to distracted driving related to problem gambling, the time to get help is NOW. Through Your One Sure Thing, Florida’s Problem Gambling HelpLine, 888-ADMIT-IT, compulsive gamblers and their loved ones can access resources including speaking to a highly trained specialist able to listen without judgement and offer actionable steps towards recovery. Don’t wait to seek support — these resources are available for free 24/7 for all Floridians.

sokoban4ik Shines and Takes Down PokerStars MicroMillions Marathon Main Event

sokoban4ik Shines and Takes Down PokerStars MicroMillions Marathon Main Event

The MicroMillions Marathon took place online at PokerStars over four days from April 20-23, during which time no fewer than 84 low-stakes, affordable events crowned their champions. Although every MicroMillions Marathon champion was worthy of such a title, the attention of the low-stakes poker tournament community was fixated on the Main Event and High Roller.

The MicroMillions Marathon Main Event saw an incredible number of PokerStars players exchange $22 for the chance to compete for a five-figure score; 19,870 of them to be exact. All of those entrants meant a prize pool tipping the scales at $397,400!

As the Main Event was played as a progressive knockout affair, for more than the 3,247 players that received a slice of the main prize pool pie walked away with some share of the spoils. With those bounties included, none of the nine finalists received less than $2,139, the prize awarded to the ninth-place finisher “Jupitle” of Brazil.

One by one, the final table grew ever short-handed, with “JDM211” ($2,653), “garrafalitro” ($3,799), and Lithuania’s “bartuxas” ($4,144) crashing out, leaving only five players in the hunt for the title of MicroMillions Marathon Main Event champion.

Those five became four with the untimely demise of “Mariachi” ($6,825), then three when “BlackStyle11” busted ($9,498). The final three players locked in five figure sums for their efforts, an incredible return on a $22 investment.

Belarus’ “Greedyim” fell in third for $11,138, setting up a battle for the title between “sokoban4ik” of Ukraine and Brazilian grinder “GabrielSMR.” sokoban4ik had racked up more than their fair share of bounties, and they reeled in the scalp of GabrielSMR plus the money on their head for a total haul worth $28,858, leaving GarbielSMR to head into the night with $17,980 reasons to be cheerful.

Peruvian One-Two in the $55 High Roller

The MicroMillions Marathon High Roller was an eight-handed event with a $55 buy-in. It drew in 5,859 entries, who created a $292,950 prize pool, smashing the $250,000 guarantee out of the water.

Team PokerStars members Laas Jagd “Wistern” Lauritsen, Parker “tonkaaaa” Talbot, and Benjamin “Spraggy” Spragg were among the entrants, although none of them managed to finish in the money. Spragg went the deepest, busting in 887th with 831 places paid.

Nobody took home less than $2,775 once they had navigated their way to the final table; Germany’s “koelnrome” netted that sum. “orebit7” ($3,893), “FKAXM” ($5,462), and “EMIR XO” ($7,662) joined the long list of busted players, leaving the final five to fight it out for the glory, each having secured a five-figure prize for their performances.

After “jahwe” ($10,749), “olleggi” ($15,080), and “jooa42” ($21,155) bowed out, two Peruvian players butted heads-up for the title of High Roller champion. When the dust had settled, “zagaz124” had defeated “Curioso24” heads-up and captured a cool $41,637. Curioso24 licked their wounds with a still very respectable $29,677 consolation prize.

Apuestas Problemáticas y Conducción Distraída

Preventing the Link Between Crime & Problem Gambling

McConachie Wins 888poker Live London £1,100 Main Event; Ambassadors Simpson & Eastwood Also Find Success

It’s been a busy period for 888poker as their 2023 888poker Live London festival wrapped up yesterday. The £1,100 Main Event was the pinnacle event that everyone was looking forward to. After eight hours of poker on the final day, Dave McConachie reigned victorious, overcoming a field of 385 entries to take home the top prize of £83,100 and the 888poker trophy. McConachie produced a stunning comeback in the heads-up match against Francis Obadun after a deal was made.

888poker’s Ian Simpson and Nick Eastwood also picked up tournament wins, to close out the series inside the English capital.

McConachie Pulls Off Miracle; Obadun Satisfied with Outcome

The London native overcame one of the toughest final tables he’s ever been a part of, and coming out on top was extremely satisfying.

“Playing with Francis is tough. I mean, he’s a lunatic,” McConachie laughed after the match. “He’s a tough opponent. The whole final table was tough. I went card dead for a bit, but things turned out in my favor. Today was a miracle.”

McConachie can often be found playing MTTs either in the London area or overseas in Las Vegas during the summer months. While it’s not the first tournament win of his illustrious career, it will now be recorded as his largest victory, topping the six-figure mark in USD that is recorded on The Hendon Mob.

As for the runner-up, Obadun was also satisfied with how the day turned out, even though he was unable to finish things off after holding a large chip lead earlier on. “I came into the day thinking I could get top two. Obviously, it would have been nice to win, but it can go either way once you get to heads-up. I wasn’t going to sit here and be a rock for two hours.”

Action from the Final Day

There were 15 players who returned for Day 3 with their sights set on the top prize after already locking up at least £4,050. It didn’t take long for some of the short stacks to start hitting the rail, as the final table was reached in just two quick hours. Hong Pham entered the day with a healthy lead over the rest of her opponents, but it was only a matter of time until she clashed in a pot with fellow big stack, Obadun.

Just before the first break of the day, Pham made an ill-timed bluff that set her back on the leaderboard and she was forced to play with a lot more caution going forward. Caution was the name of the game when the final table got underway with major ICM implications in play. Raymond Caabay was the first to fall after getting unlucky in a few spots against Obadun, who appeared to be running over the table.

Tobias Kirby Hogarty was cruising along with an above-average stack for the latter part of the tournament. Still, the tides turned when he ran into the pocket kings of Jiaze Li. Unfortunately for Hogarty, he fell victim to some short stacks that doubled up, and he was forced to settle for eighth place. Bixi Yao nursed the short stack for what seemed like an eternity and appeared to be in a position to at least stay alive. However, her ace-high kicker did not play on the runout, and Yao was also eliminated.

With Pham now the short stack, the cards did not go her way. Folding her way down to just ten big blinds, Pham moved all in from the small blind and got a surprising call from Obadun in the big blind with jack-five offsuit. Obadun flopped a pair and turned trips, leaving Pham drawing dead before the river was dealt. The final five players took a 30-minute dinner break, and whatever they ate caused chaos when they play resumed.

As the blinds went up again, there were a couple of stacks around the ten big-blind mark. First on the chopping block was Li, whose baby ace was no match for the six-high of Obadun. The chip leader once again took an uncommon line but found a pair on the flop, which held on to eliminate Li in fifth place. On the next hand, Smit Trivedi found himself at risk in the big blind, but McConachie’s flopped pair of aces was more than enough to send Trivedi packing.

One more hand, one more elimination as Ryan Otto picked up a king in the big blind and opted to send his short stack into the middle as well. Obadun was up to his old tricks with jack-high and to nobody’s surprise, found a jack on the turn. Otto couldn’t find any help on the river, leaving Obadun with a huge chip lead entering the heads-up battle with McConachie.

Everything was looking like Obadun was going to take this one home, especially after adding to his lead in the first few hands of their heads-up match. However, Obadun may have crossed the line one too many times when he opted to run a huge bluff on the river, only to have McConachie call him down with two pair. That gave McConachie a glimmer of hope, and that was all he needed.

Once the chip stacks were nearly identical, the two players made an agreement to each guarantee themselves at least £75,000 and play for the remaining £8,100 and the trophy. As if Obadun needed any more incentive to play aggressively, but now he had the result to back him up. On the final hand of the night, both players woke up with an ace, and in heads-up play, sometimes that’s all it takes. All of the chips got in the middle preflop and it was McConachie who held the better kicker. A clean run out for the now chip leader meant the tournament now had a champion.

Oklahoma Won’t Get Legal Sports Betting This Year

Red pen voting no

The latest attempt by lawmakers in Oklahoma to legalize sports betting has fallen short. House Bill 1027 failed to progress out of a Senate committee before the necessary deadline.

It was the second consecutive year that Representative Ken Luttrell introduced a sports betting legalization bill. He believes that the failure of this year’s bill was due to the Senate needing further conversations between the governor and tribes. Luttrell will try again with a similar bill next year. He believes that legalization would be very beneficial for the state and that many of his constituents strongly support the proposal.

tribes that have state gaming compacts to operate both retail and online sports betting

The Oklahoma House passed HB 1027 in February after a 66-22 vote. The proposal would allow tribes that have state gaming compacts to operate both retail and online sports betting. Oklahoma currently has 35 tribes offering some type of gambling.

The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission would have been in charge of overseeing the sector. HB 1027 proposed a 4% tax rate on gross gaming revenue up to $5m, 5% on the next $5m in revenue, and a 6% tax on any higher sums.
