5 Stories You May’ve Missed from 2023 WPT Poker Showdown at Seminole Hard Rock

This weekend, the World Poker Tour (WPT) Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown $3,500 Main Event gets underway (it runs April 28-May 2). However, the festival itself began back on April 13, and there have been nearly four dozen side event winners thus far.

The series kicked off with a bang as Event #1: $400 Deep Stack No-Limit Hold’em attracted 4,184 entries and awarded a $1,380,720 prize pool. Carlos Loving took down that tournament for $153,690. Others to claim titles included Ken Po (Event #13: $400 HORSE for $12,185), Rodney Turvin (Event #27: $1,700 Purple Chip Bounty Six-Max for $50,455), Shannon Shorr (Event #37: $10,000 Eight-Handed NLH for $260,600), Cherish Andrews (Event #39: $1,100 Deep Stack Turbo NLH for $31,105), and Carlos Chadha (Event #40: $1,100 Deep Stack for $71,150).

Here are five other stories to know headed into the WPT $3,500 Poker Showdown.

Michael Newman Wins Record-Tying 9th SHRP Title

From April 16-18, Event #9: $400 Deep Stack Pot-Limit Omaha played out. The tournament drew 468 entrants and awarded a $154,440 prize pool. After three long days of play, Seminole Hard Rock crusher Michael Newman emerged victorious to capture $25,178 in prize money and a ninth SHRP title, which tied him for most all-time alongside Raminder Singh.

“It’s great to be tied with someone who’s a really good player,” Newman said after the victory, though they wouldn’t be tied for long (more on that below).

Singh Breaks Record a Week Later

As stated above, the tie between Newman and Singh didn’t last long as a week later the latter topped a field of 157 entries to win Event #38: $400 Deep Stack NLH for $12,320 and his record-breaking 10th SHRP title.

The tournament ended when Singh struck a heads-up deal with Kevin McLeskey, who settled for second place and $10,800 in prize money.

Newcomer Wins Event #21 for $300K!

One of the bigger tournaments of the series was Event #21: $600 Deep Stack NLH, which took place April 20-24. The event attracted 3,989 entries and more than doubled the $1 million guarantee by offering up a $2,074,280 prize pool.

Some heavy hitters made the final table in Ari Engel and Darryll Fish, but ultimately it came down to Vladyslav Shovkovyi and David Trager. The former held a 5:1 chip lead when heads-up play began, but the latter managed to claw back to close to even. At that point, the final two struck a deal that saw Trager take $288,485 in prize money, while Shovkovyi took the title and $299,715.

“I think ace-queen was my hand of the tournament,” Shovkovyi told reporters after the win, “because I made a few good moves with that hand and I won a lot of chips.”

He added: “Getting first and the trophy in such a big field is awesome. I had a few good runs this year, but I took second, third, and a few more final tables, but not first … The level of some players here is very good. The guys on the final table had millions in winnings, and I’m only just starting. So, it was awesome to play with good players, and to put pressure on them.”

Ari Engel Wins a Title of His Own

After busting the above tournament in fifth place for $94,300, Engel promptly jumped into Event #32: $600 Six-Max Pot-Limit Omaha, a tournament that drew 196 runners and paid out a $102,900 prize pool.

By the end of the night, Engel was one of the final three players standing alongside Shanmukha Meruga and Pawel Andrzejewski. The trio wound up working a deal that saw Andrzejewski take third for $15,213, Meruga second for $18,212, and Engel first place for $20,505 and the trophy.

A Pair of High Roller Tournaments

On April 26, Event #42: $50,000 Super High Roller attracted 18 entries, which meant an $873,000 prize pool awaited the top four finishers. Sam Soverel and Kevin Rabichow finished in fourth and third place for $104,760 and $157,140 respectively, which left high roller regulars David Peters and Alex Foxen as the last two players standing.

They opted to work a deal that saw Foxen settle for second place and $282,573, while Peters was deemed the champion and claimed $328,527 in prize money. The victory marked the fourth SHRP major series trophy for Peters, who also won the 2022 SHRPO $50K Super High Roller for $407,545.

The following day, Event #45: $25,500 PLO High Roller drew 27 runners and offered up a $666,900 prize pool to the top five finishers. Foxen was once again at the final table, this time settling for fifth place and $53,300, while Michael Wang (4th – $73,400) and Firas Kashat (3rd – $106,700) followed him out the door.

That left Ren Lin and Dylan Smith to do battle in what turned out to be a back-and-forth heads-up affair. Eventually, Lin closed it out to win his first SHRP title and $266,700, while Smith had to settle for second place and $166,800 in prize money.

Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi score leading Paris Saint – Germain to Victory over Lens

On Saturday, April 15^th, 2023 the young talent in Kylian Mbappé as well as the old legend in Lionel Messi both scored a goal each as the French League leading Paris Saint – Germain benefitted from a red card in order to defeat the 2^nd – place in the French League, Lens, with a final tally of 3 to 1. Paris Saint – Germain now will move to 9 – points in front of their rival in France.

Kylian Mbappe

It was an extremely special goal score for Kylian. Earlier this season Mbappe became Paris Saint – Germain’s all – time leading goal scorer when he managed to surpass Edinson Cavani’s 200 – goal mark.

Kylian’s dominant strike on Saturday vs. Lens made the only 24 – year – old French striker as the overall all – time top goal scorer for Paris Saint – Germain in the French Leaguewith 139 – total goals. Cavani netted a total of 138 – goals. Overall, Mbappé now counts 203 – goal strikes for Paris Saint – Germain.

Marseille now can move above Lens with a home win of their own versus the struggling Troyes on Sunday, April 16^th, 2023 with just 7 – games remaining following the matches over this weekend’s round.

Lens seemed to be in complete control of the contest up until the midfielder in Salis Abdul Samed was ejected for a reckless challenge on the right back, Achraf Hakimi, during the 19^th – minute of match play.

Kylian Mbappé just as happened to score his league – leading 20^th – goal score when he accepted a nice pass from his midfielder, Vitinha, and Kylian turned very fast prior to slamming his 1^st – time shot that slapped into the bottom right corner of the net during the 31^st – minute of game time. Vitinha managed to double the lead for PSG just 6 – minutes after that with a 25 – meter smash into the same corner of the opposing goal.

Lionel Messi

Lionel then struck during the 40^th – minute with his buddy from France, Mbappé, who back – heeled the football to the Argentine – native for a low strike finding the back of the net. That was Messi’s 15^th – league goal score.

Lens so seemed to perform better than Paris Saint – Germain did during the 2^nd – half of this match, even though they were playing with a man down. A hand – ball from Paris Saint – Germain’s midfielder, Fabian Ruiz, after a corner – kick gave Lens a penalty – shot, and the Polish winger, Przemysław Frankowski, sent goal – keeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, to the wrong side during the 60^th – minute of game play.

Lens’ 15 – goal top scorer in Loïs Openda put up a shot that was saved during the 64^th – minute, and then he forced a corner – kick as the visitors kept up the intense pressure on Paris Saint – Germain.

Paris Saint – Germain’s Head Coach

The Paris Saint – Germain head coach, Christophe Galtier, has recently been under extreme pressure following his 8 – losses this season across all of the competitions. This week he passionately disagreed with all of the allegations that he had made racist as well as anti – Muslim remarks while Galtier was in charge of Nice during the previous European football season.

The Parc des Princes fans became quite quite when Lens controlled the action early on, with Samed’s header neatly saved by Donnarumma in just the first 2 – minutes of the game.

Paris Saint – Germain’s defender in Danilo almost managed to score on an ever so embarrassing own – goal when his winding back – pass from somewhere near half – way downfield surprised Donnarumma during the 10^th – minute of match play, but it luckily bounced just wide of the net.

The game seemed to turn in favor of Paris Saint Germain’s when the midfielder, Samed, lunged at Hakimi as he caught his left ankle in a very dangerous slide – tackle.

Also on Saturday, April 15^th, 2023 Rennes defeated Reims with a final tally of 3 to nil in order to move just 1 – point in front of Lille and into 5^th – place. The Belgium winger, Jérémy Doku, scored 2 – times for Rennes during the first 20 – minutes of that game. The defender in Arthur Theate made scored another goal to make it 3 to nil during the 69^th – minute of that contest.

Ex-Apple Employee’s $17m+ Scam Lands Him Three Years’ Prison

United States District Judge Beth L. Freeman has sentenced former Apple employee Dhirendra Prasad to three years in prison, while also ordering him to pay over $19m in restitution for defrauding the tech giant of more than $17m and for related tax crimes.

Ex-Treasury intelligence officer Irene Kenyon shared a link to the Northern District of California’s Department of Justice news release on Prasad’s sentence via Twitter:

Prasad, who worked as an Apple buyer from 2008 to 2018, exploited his position to facilitate kickbacks, steal parts, inflate invoices, and cause Apple to pay for products and services it never received. To further rile the feds, Prassad also evaded taxes on the proceeds of his schemes.

According to the DOJ’s sentencing memo, Apple handed Prasad “substantial discretion to make autonomous decisions to benefit his employer.”

Instead, Prasad abused the company’s trust to enrich himself while accepting salary and bonuses valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. Knowing how Apple worked from the inside gave Prasad the means to keep his scamming ways undetected.

On Wednesday, Prasad’s shady past returned home to roost, with Judge Freeman also ordering him to forfeit over $5.4m in assets, pay an additional forfeiture money judgment of $8.1m, plus serve three years of supervised release. This is all on top of the restitution order to pay Apple and the IRS over $17m and $1.8m, respectively.

Eric Diaz Wins CSOP Larry Frank Memorial Event at Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown

The night before the World Poker Tour (WPT) $3,500 Poker Showdown was slated to get underway at South Florida’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, a special charity event was held. In conjunction with Matt Stout’s Charity Series of Poker (CSOP), the Seminole Hard Rock hosted the $300 Larry Frank Memorial Charity Event.

The late Larry Frank, also known as “Mr. Frank,” was a longtime employee at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood and was “instrumental in the success of tournament poker in South Florida.” Prior to the start of the charity event, both the WPT’s Matt Savage and Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Poker Tournament Manager Jason Heidenthal remembered Larry Frank.

As the SHRP blog stated: “Larry Frank was a member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Before he passed in 2021, he worked for Seminole Gaming and Seminole Hard Rock Support Services for more than 25 years in various roles, including General Manager of Poker Operations at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood and General Manager of Seminole Casino Classic.”

The event attracted 94 runners and offered up a prize pool of $13,700 plus $9,200 in non-cash prizes. Also, $12,620 from the entries went to Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, which was in addition to other funds raised via a silent auction.

In the end, it was Eric Diaz finishing as the last player standing to win $5,000 in cash plus a $3,500 seat into this weekend’s WPT Main Event. Interestingly, former Seminole Hard Rock Tournament Director Tony Burns, who earlier this year left that position to work with the new Moneymaker Tour, returned to his old stomping grounds and wound up finishing in second place for $2,000.

A couple of other participants also received some bonus money at the first break of the day. Vladimir Grechnikov, winner of last year’s RGPS Main Event Seminole Coconut Creek, was the chip leader and received a $1,000 bonus. Likewise, poker reporter Terrance Reid had the most entries into the event with six, meaning he too received a $1,000 bonus.

The first elimination at the final table was that of Las Vegas police officer Bryan Kirwin, who happened to be in town for a conference and decided to play a little poker. He wound up getting his last five big blinds all in preflop holding the K♦J♦ and was up against the Q♥Q♦ of Diaz. The A♦Q♠10♥ flop was a big one as Kirwin flopped the nuts, but Diaz had a set, meaning he was looking for the board to pair.

The 5♣ turn was a brick, but the 10♠ river did in fact pair the board to give Diaz a winning full house. That sent Kirwin out the door in eighth place for $700 plus a free entry into any $400 Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Poker tournament before the end of the year.

As reported by SHRP officials, the final hand of the night came with the blinds at a staggering 25,000/50,000/50,000 when Burns moved all in from the button for 75,000 holding the K♥5♠ and David Moreno called off for 30,000 from the small blind with the 6♣5♣. Diaz, who held a massive chip lead, called out of the big blind with the Q♦6♠ and scored the double knockout after the board ran out K♦Q♥6♦3♦4♦.

Cops 4 Kids Charity Event in Vegas

The CSOP will now head back to its Las Vegas stomping grounds for the CSOP Event #48: Cops 4 Kids Charity Poker Tournament, which will take place on Friday, May 5 at the Moon Nightclub at Palms. A VIP reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the tournament starting at 7 p.m. Players will start with 10,000 in chips with 5,000 per rebuy. Additionally, there will be a 20,000-chip add-on period at the end of registration.

The event will feature a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and prizes for the final table, including a $5,000 first-place prize. Proceeds will benefit Cops 4 Kids through the LVPMSA Charitable Foundation, which supports children’s charities, and awards college scholarships to graduating high school seniors in our community.

Stakelogic approved by Swedish regulator

On the heels of the launch of its new Greedy Fox online slot, which features its Super Stake and Spin to Win innovations, software provider Stakelogic has received approval from the Swedish regulator, Spelinspektionen, to continue to offer its portfolio of classic and video slots to licensed operators in the Nordic country.

Stakelogic Live, the provider’s rapidly growing live dealer division that was launched in the fall of 2021, will likewise be able to continue to offer its live content to operators and their players in Sweden. Games from both divisions are hooked up to the Super Stake innovation, which was launched in February 2020 and allows players to double their bet and boost the chance of activating a bonus feature and landing some potentially lucrative win combinations.

Coming Regulatory Changes

The approvals are in advance of the new regulations, including mandatory B2B licenses for gambling software in the Scandinavian nation, set down by the Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) that are due to come into force on July 1, 2023.

The main objective of the amendments to the Gambling Act, which include the implementation of B2B licenses, is to prohibit gambling software providers from providing services to B2C operators that are not licensed. The updates were adopted on November 23, 2022, by (then new) members of Sweden’s parliament. Up until recently, only B2C operators needed to have a license granted by the SGA.

“Sweden is an important market for us, and we are thrilled to be among the first to secure a supplier licence for both Stakelogic and Stakelogic Live,” said Stephan van den Oetelaar, Chief Executive Officer for Stakelogic.

“Our games have really hit the mark with players in Sweden, and securing approval from the regulator means that we can continue to offer our slots and live content to operators and their players once the expected regulatory change comes into force.

We are super focused on regulated markets, so securing this approval has been a priority for us and we are delighted to be among the first round of providers to have been given the green light by the regulator.”

Courtesy of the approval, operators in Sweden will be able to provide players with access to the supplier’s range of classic slots including Multi6Player, Big Runner Deluxe and Multi4Player. In addition to his seven SCOOP titles, Glaser has also won six World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) titles and four World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets. He also finished as the runner-up in the inaugural 2022 WPT World Championship Main Event for a career-best cash of $2.83 million.

It may come as a surprise that German professional poker player Ole “wizowizo” Schemion only secured his first wins under the SCOOP umbrella in 2018. Since then, he has been on an absolute heater and has become one of the most successful SCOOP players ever, thanks to bagging a trio of titles in 2022.

Impressively, five of his seven triumphs have been for six-figure paydays, with his largest being $283,261 after he was the last player standing in the 2018 $10,300 PLO 6-Max High Roller. And unlike anyone else on this list, he is the only player to have three SCOOP wins in tournaments that have buy-ins of more than $10,000.

Team PokerStars’ Sam Grafton Captures the €10,200 Mystery Bounty Title (€145,400)

After nearly 12 hours of play on Day 2, PokerStars ambassador Sam Grafton has topped a field of 74 entries to claim the title in the €10,200 Mystery Bounty event. The 2023 PokerStars EPT presented by Monte-Carlo Casino® is well underway now, and the first winner has been crowned, pocketing Grafton a total of €145,400.

Grafton overcame a huge heads-up deficit in order to claim the victory, his first of 2023. Grafton was on the edge of defeat multiple times in his heads-up battle with Sam Greenwood but managed to avoid disaster each and every time. The big turning point for the British poker pro was a two-outer he hit with pocket threes against the pocket jacks of Greenwood. Grafton took a commanding lead after the big double-up and finished the match just moments later.

The two players embraced in a hug after the match, and Grafton admitted that he was very lucky to come out as the winner. “You deserved that one, Sam. Very unlucky, sorry about that.” Grafton will take it any way he can as he joked earlier in the day that he was playing with the top 0.1% luckiest players in the world.

Day 2 Action

There were 29 players who returned to their seats from Day 1 with late registration open for an additional two levels into Day 2. That encouraged plenty of action for the first hour with stacks coming and going throughout. When all was settled, a total of 74 entries were recorded, and just 26 players made it to the first break.

In total, there was €370,000 up for grabs in the bounty prize pool, spread across 26 envelopes. The largest prize was the €50,000 envelope, and two of them were made available. The first one belonged to Conor Beresford, who was one of the first players to draw from the treasure chest. Couple that with four additional bounties, Beresford managed to walk away with €127,650.

The other top bounty went to Nacho Barbero, who only picked up one knockout on the day. Barbero made good use of it, picking up €50,000 to go along with his seventh-place finish. The other big bounty winners included Erik Seidel (€25,000), who failed to cash, and Artur Martirosian (€25,000) who bowed out in fourth place for an additional €34,750.

The chip lead in the early part of the day belonged to Felipe Ketzer, who was dominating the field, but a slight overstep in aggression while chasing down the bounties led to Ketzer becoming the short stack at the hands of Grafton. Ketzer was eliminated just short of the money but was able to pick up a couple of bounties in the process.

The unwanted bubble belonged to Sosia Jiang, who was grinding the short stack bit couldn’t make it last any longer. Her big slick was no match for the suited connectors of Beresford and the money bubble burst on the very first hand. The rest of the field was guaranteed at least €8,700 and some of the min-cashes went the way of Kayhan Mokri, Joao Vieira, Paul Newey, and Guram Andronikashvili.

The eliminations at the final table slowed drastically with just six players left at the dinner break. Over the next two hours, Julien Sitbon was the only player eliminated in that time frame. Eventually, the blinds would catch up with the short stacks as Maksim Vaskresenski and Martirosian were forced to get their chips in the middle with subpar holdings.

It was a swingy match for the final three players, who took turns taking the chip lead and spent their fair share on the short stack. Beresford eventually bowed out in third place but not without the dramatics as all three players had their entire stack in the middle at the same time. Greenwood’s pocket jacks prevailed, which left him as a massive favorite entering heads-up with Grafton.

Greenwood was on the brink of capturing another title multiple times in the heads-up match, but a combination of bad luck or no luck at all left the Canadian frustrated. In the end, Greenwood went for the hero call on the river, but Grafton was able to turn over the goods with a straight to earn the victory. It is expected that many, if not all of these players, will be back in the ring tomorrow when the single-day €25,000 event takes place.

Flutter Reportedly Gets Investor Support for a US Listing

Flutter Entertainment has reportedly received sufficient support from investors to pursue a US stock exchange listing. Sky News indicated on Wednesday that the Ireland-based gambling group will publicly announce the news at its annual meeting on Thursday. Support from at least 75% of shareholders was necessary for the move to get the all-clear to proceed.

It sees FanDuel as eventually becoming the group’s biggest revenue driver.

Flutter originally floated the idea of a US listing in February. One of the key reasons for such a move would the growing success of its North America-focused FanDuel brand. It sees FanDuel as eventually becoming the group’s biggest revenue driver. A US listing would boost the company’s profile, provide access to deeper capital markets, and help with recruitment.

Flutter Entertainment owns major gambling brands like Paddy Power, Betfair, PokerStars, and FanDuel.

A number of other major companies are also moving away from London Stock Exchange (LSE) primary listings. These include investment holding company SoftBank and building materials group CRH. It is unclear if Flutter will keep its LSE listing long-term. The expectation is that Flutter will also announce the appointment of John Bryan as the next chairman this week.
