Dara O’Kearney’s Expert Poker Tips: Strategies for Increasing Variance

Deuce Seven

I recently wrote a strategy piece on how you should adjust when you’re the weakest player at the table (or one of the weakest in the tournament). The basic idea is you should increase variance. In this piece I will go into specifics on how exactly to do that.

Open bigger

In general, open sizings in tournaments are small: starting around 2.3x to 2.5x when the stacks are deep and going all the way down to min-raises when they’re shallow. The theory is that allows more room to maneuver post flop with a higher stack to pot ratio (SPR).

10x is adequate for your premiums like A2 and T5o

Post-flop maneuverability is all well and good when you’re better than your opponents after the flop, but if you’re the donkey likely to stack off with one pair or a draw, then you want it as low as possible. Therefore, I recommend using bigger sizings when you enter the pot. You could 5x, but I recommend 10x as the minimum. 10x is adequate for your premiums like A2 and T5o, but you should increase this with more vulnerable holdings like Kings. I recommend 20x for Kings and Queens, 30x for medium pairs, 40x for the small pairs, and 50x for the pair that needs the most protection (Jacks). That’s if you play it at all (more on that later).

You may notice there’s no mention of Aces above. That’s because it’s the one hand I recommend you limp with, particularly when stacks are deep. This has two big advantages. First, your opponents who have seen you raising huge with your other big hands will never put you on it. Second, you’ll lose less when they get cracked. If the flop comes something scary like T52 rainbow. you can just fold.

Play more hands

It’s an obvious point, but the more hands you play, the greater your variance. I’m not suggesting you play every hand: it’s ok to fold total trash like 92o and trouble hands like JJ and AQ, but in general, you should open almost everything else. However, be careful with suited and connected hands. They can get you into trouble when they flop draws.

the cards in the bottom half of the deck can’t come on the turn or the river

Most people think draws come in more often than they do. The simple (but incorrect) theory is that if you have two cards of a suit, and the flop contains two of your suit, you’ll hit one of your nine flush cards on the turn just under one-fifth of the time (9/47 to be precise), and the same on the river. However, this logic overlooks one indisputable fact: the cards in the bottom half of the deck can’t come on the turn or the river. Most of the time, half of your outs will be in the bottom half, so you’ll actually only hit your draw half as often as most people believe. Don’t chase draws!

Slow play your monsters

If you open 40 big blinds with pocket Twos (the recommended size), get four callers and the flop comes AKQ all hearts, you should go all in immediately to charge people to suck out on you while you almost certainly have the best hand (if not, it’s just a cooler).

let someone with AA think they have the best hand

But if the flop comes A22 with two hearts…check! Let someone bluff at it, or let someone with AA think they have the best hand. If the flop checks through, check the turn too. Same deal for the river – someone will always take a small stab (if not, it’s just a cooler).

Never fold to anyone with a beard or breasts

It’s widely known among pros that most bluffers have beards. It makes sense when you think about it: anyone with a beard is likely trying to hide something, even if it’s just a weak chin.

This man cannot be trusted. Look at that beard. Call his bluff. [Image: David Lappin Twitter]

You should also never fold to a woman. Not because they bluff very often (most don’t, since they don’t have beards), but imagine the shame of folding to a female only for her to slam a bluff down on the table and put it on Instagram. So call her 20% river bet with the second nuts even if you’re never good.

Always play T5o for any amount

Most people think Aces is the best hand in poker. It isn’t. T5o is. Just ask Ali Mallu. This might sound contradictory given what I said earlier about draws, but the simple fact is T5o is such a powerhouse it almost never misses (if it does it’s just a cooler).

Think about it. Every straight has either a Ten or a Five in it so you can make all the straights. It’s almost impossible not to have a straight by the river, so just hang in there even if the flop comes A88 or 555. However, it’s better to stick to T5o which is a much stronger hand than T5s. T5s can only make one quarter of flushes, whereas T5o can make half.

So there you have it: follow the guidelines in this piece when you think you’re the worst player at the table to ensure you will be.

What is the Metaverse? | VR Poker & Casino

What is the Metaverse? | VR Poker & Casino

You have likely heard the word Metaverse and wondered what it is. You are not alone because the world’s latest buzzword seems to have a slightly different meaning depending on the company using it. As a sweeping statement, the Metaverse is a virtual reality world where people from all walks of life can come together and interact in an immersive, virtual setting. What does the Metaverse mean for poker and casino? Let’s take a look.

The term metaverse first became public in the 1992 science fiction movie Snow Crash. In science fiction in circles, the Metaverse is an iteration of the internet as a universal and immersive virtual world accessed by people wearing virtual reality headsets. Users can do anything and everything in the Metaverse, from chatting with their friends to running businesses and even playing online poker and casinos. Once a distant pipedream, the Metaverse is now very real and advancing constantly.

Currently, most VR products are aimed at the gaming market, allowing gamers to feel part of the world’s in which they control their character. Recently gambling companies, such as PokerStars, have seen the potential of the Metaverse for their product and customers because the virtual world allows for unprecedented interaction between users. There is the potential to play at a European Poker Tour (EPT) stop that looks and feels like you are in Prague but are physically located in your home.

The concept of virtual reality and the Metaverse is nothing new, despite the term’s use becoming widespread over the past couple of years. Panoramic paintings were civilization’s first attempts at virtual reality because they filled the viewer’s field of vision. Other relatively primitive attempts followed in the mid-20th century, with the latest creations utilizing the latest in computer technology.

First VR Machine (1956)Morton Heilig, a cinematographer, created the world’s first VR machine. Heilig built the Sensorama, which was a large booth that could accommodate up to four people. The Sensorama stimulated all the senses using audio, smells, vibrations, atmospheric effects, and full-color 3D video.

MIT Aspen Movie Map (1978) – The Aspen Movie Map was developed by Andrew Lippman and a team at the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the late 1970s. It was a revolutionary hypermedia system that allowed users to take a virtual tour through the city of Aspen, Colorado. The pioneering example of interactive computing was back then what Google Maps is today.

SEGA VR-1 Released (1994) – Video game and entertainment giant Sega installed the VR-1 into Joypolis indoor theme park in Yokohama, Japan, in July 1994, and it was the first large-scale interactive video game/theme park attraction. Up to 32 people donned virtual reality headsets, sat in four eight-seater motion base pods, and embarked on a three-minute first-person rail shooter game.

Oculus Rift Invented (2011) – The Oculus Rift was the first true, modern VR headset. |The first rough prototype was built by a then 18-year-old Palmer Luckey, who assembled the headset in his parents’ garage in Long Beach, California. He joined forces with John Carmack, co-founder of id Software, and the world got its first look at what would ultimately become the Oculus Rift at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Facebook Buy Oculus (2014) – Facebook purchased Oculus for $2 billion in 2014, as the company fit in with Facebook’s vision for widespread virtual reality. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said of Oculus, “mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow. Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play, and communicate.”

PokerStars VR's Casino One

PokerStars VR Released (2018) – PokerStars is always at the forefront of poker innovation, and it continued that trend with PokerStars VR. Launched in late 2018, PokerStars VR combined the best of online and live poker in a fun and engaging, immersive social free-to-play game. Players worldwide play cash games and tournaments, bet on sports and enjoy various casino games in a virtual reality setting.

Facebook Changes Its Name to Meta (2021)Mark Zuckerberg rebranded Facebook to Meta as part of his strategic plan to create a metaverse. Zuckerberg envisages a virtual world where consumers spend parts of their lives. The Meta CEO fully believes the metaverse possibilities are endless; Zuckerberg has invested billions of dollars into making the Metaverse a success.

Who Owns the Metaverse?

Author Neal Stephenson coined Metaverse in his book Snow Crash in 1992. The book depicts a dystopian future where rich people can escape to an alternative virtual reality that is connected worldwide.

Who owns the Metaverse in its current form? In short, nobody and everyone! That sounds confusing, but there is no single owner of the Metaverse. Instead, the Metaverse belongs to software developers, artists, game developers, investors, and metaverse users. Each company has its own Metaverse, such as the PokerStars VR world or the myriad of games, but one day all these worlds could be connected.

How Can I Get Into the Metaverse?

You may think that getting into the Metaverse is a challenging task because it sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, but it’s frightfully simple. Every metaverse product is different, but almost every one of them has a dedicated app or software to download to your computer. So start by downloading any files or software, such as the PokerStars VR client. Once downloaded and installed, all that is required is for you to run the software, create your account, and you are good to go.

You need a virtual reality, or VR headset, to access the Metaverse. Make sure you have a compatible headset for the Metaverse you are entering. You must also be connected to the internet whenever you visit the Metaverse.

An increasing number of VR headsets are available on the open marketplace. The Oculus Quest 2 is one of the most commonly used virtual reality headsets that hundreds of thousands of gamers use daily. The Oculus Quest 2 costs around $400, making it one of the more affordable headsets. Oculus Quest 2 replaced the now-defunct Oculus Rift headsets. The only real downside to the Oculus Quest 2 is you must have a Facebook account to use it.

The Valve Index is the VR headset from American video game developer Valve Corporation. Launched in late June 2019, the Valve Index is expensive at $999, although second-hand headsets are becoming more readily available.

HTC makes some of the best VR headsets on the market, with prices starting around $700 and increasing to $1,500 or more for the Vive Pro 2. The HTC Vive XR Elite costs $1,200 and is a complete package.

One of the great things about the virtual reality world is you can play poker in the Metaverse. PokerStars has VR poker for over 18-year-olds, and although the product is currently only for play money, there is scope to introduce real money online poker in the Metaverse.

What is Poker in the Metaverse?

Metaverse Poker Tour

Poker in the Metaverse works similarly to traditional online poker in that the hand rankings are the same, and the rules of the games are the same. However, the main difference between VR poker and online poker is the level of immersion the former creates.

You are represented by an alias and an avatar in a 2D setting when you play online poker. While changing the table felts and backgrounds is possible, online poker is visually bland compared to playing poker in the Metaverse. VR poker creates customizable 3D avatars that move around like people, doing so in vibrant locations and creating a poker game with video game-like graphics and like a real-life poker game.

How to Play Poker in the Metaverse

PokerStars VR is a premium VR poker product, and although it does not currently offer real-money gaming, it does offer rewards and kudos for winning cash games and tournaments. Some play-to-earn metaverse poker are essentially real-money poker in a virtual reality setting; their legality is a grey area, which is why PokerNews is not discussing them here, and why the following instructions are for getting up and running with PokerStars VR.

Install the PokerStars VR app on your computer or compatible virtual reality headset. The download should not take long, especially with a fast broadband internet connection.

Creating your free account is the next step, which will only take a minute or two. You will likely spend longer during this next stage because this is where you create your avatar from the options available. Remember, this avatar represents you during poker in the Metaverse, so make it as memorable or bizarre as you wish.

All new PokerStars VR customers receive some free chips to start their virtual poker career, meaning you can jump straight into cash games or tournaments that are running. If you run out of chips or want to play for higher stakes, purchasing more chips for real money is possible. All that’s left now is to enjoy your favorite poker game in one of the most immersive settings outside of real-life poker.

The Best Poker Games to Play in the Metaverse

PokerStars VR only offers No-Limit Hold’em right now, but that’s OK because No-Limit Hold’em is the most popular poker variant in the world. You can play No-Limit Hold’em cash games at PokerStars VR in addition to sit & go single-table tournaments, multi-table tournaments (MTTs), and the super-exciting Spin & Go jackpot sit & go games.

PokerStars VR Roulette

In addition to playing poker in the Metaverse, it is also possible to play at a VR casino in a similar vein. Casino in the Metaverse has countless possibilities, such as making it look, feel, and sound like you are in a lavish, luxurious Las Vegas or Macau casino while you are sitting at home on your sofa!

What is Casino in the Metaverse?

Casino in the Metaverse is similar to other online casino products, but the experience is more interactive. You control your avatar, make it move around, handle chips, press the buttons on slots, and turn over cards in casino table games that use them. Compare that to clicking various buttons and icons with your mouse in a traditional online casino, and you quickly see why playing at a VR casino is growing increasingly popular.

Most casinos in the Metaverse use play money, meaning there is no risk to your bankroll. You can purchase additional coins if you wish, but you are never obligated to do so, making VR casino games the perfect way to blow off steam and enjoy the fun and thrill of casino games without worrying about the money aspect of things.

How to Play Casino in the Metaverse

Playing in a VR casino is not only free but also a simple task. Once you have turned on your compatible VR headset and installed the casino in the metaverse app or software, all that is left is to create your account, find your favorite game, and play away to your heart’s content, all while interacting with your fellow VR casino players and, hopefully, winning more chips and coins that you know what to do with!

The Best Casino Games to Play in the Metaverse

Roulette is a more popular VR casino game thanks to having your avatar fully interact with the game, including placing your chips on the various betting markers.

Blackjack is another popular game in the Metaverse, as are craps, slots, and several custom PokerStars VR-exclusive games and titles. As they are free-to-play, there is no reason not to try them all.

Can you play poker in the Metaverse?

Yes, you can play poker in the Metaverse. Most sites, including PokerStars VR, use play money currency, although several real money options are on the horizon. However, at the time of writing, few have a valid gaming license.

Can you gamble in the Metaverse?

Real money gambling, including casinos and sports betting, is growing increasingly common as more companies embrace the potential of the Metaverse. PokerStars VR has a sports section where you can play virtual bets on real-life sporting events.

Can you play PokerStars in the Metaverse?

PokerStars VR takes place in the Metaverse, giving players a unique, immersive platform for online poker cash games and tournaments.

$666 Million Profit Loss reported in 2022 For MGM China

MGM China, a Macau-based flagship developer, owner and operator of gaming resorts and accommodation in the Greater China region, officially announced overnight a decline in group-wide profit of HK$5.23 billion, which is approximately 666 million US dollars, in 2022, compared to a HK$3.85 billion, which is approximately 490 million US dollars, drop in 2021 because of the ongoing consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Report on financial results for FY22:

In the official release of its FY22 financial results, the company also disclosed an adjusted EBITDA drop of HK$1.27 billion, which is approximately $162 million US dollars, in 2022, meaning its EBITDA profit fell from HK$187.2 million, which is approximately $24 million US dollars, in 2021 earnings.

In terms of gross casino income, the report shows that gross casino revenue almost halved to HK$5.58 billion, which is approximately $711 million US dollars, for the year, which involve a 40.4% drop in massive table wins to HK$4.47 billion, which is approximately 569 million US dollars, a 72.5% drop in VIP table winnings to HK$580.8 million, which is approximately 74 million US dollars, and a decrease of 42.4$ in slot machine winnings to HK$525.2 million, which is approximately 67 million US dollars.

In this regard, the company has not advised payment of a final dividend for the year ending 31 December 2022.

Big expectations for this year:

Although the company has recently experienced some of the aforementioned profitability issues, analysts have pegged MGM China as the firm that will generate the most profits in 2023.

In support of this statement is the fact that nearly 200 of the latest gaming tables have been added to the company’s allocation after the issuance of new concessions from 1 January 2023.

However, that’s not all; as it is also predicted that the firm will manage to capture up to 3% more market share than its rivals in the coming months.

Commenting on the company’s newest gaming tables, Morgan Stanley, an investment bank, recently said: “MGM China will become the first of Macau’s six concessionaires to reach pre-COVID levels of mass GGR.”

About:

Headquartered in Macau, MGM China is the holding company of MGM Grand Paradise SA.

Furthermore,  MGM Grand Paradise SA owns and manages MGM Macau, an innovative premium integrated resort found on the Macau Peninsula and MGM Cotai, a modern luxury deluxe resort in Cotai, which officially opened in early 2018.

However, MGM China Holdings is majority-owned by MGM Resorts International, one of the leading international hospitality companies, which manages a portfolio of destination resort brands that involve Bellagio, MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay

It was founded and officially launched in 2007.

Bitcoin and Its Place in Poker

Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency worldwide. It also has the largest market share and record-breaking prices. Bitcoin is a digital currency that offers its users immutability of transactions and privacy. The whole idea of crypto is to eliminate the intermediaries, such as banks, and create a decentralised payment system.

You might be wondering why people are gambling with Bitcoin. Well, one of the reasons is that people that are trying to get a hold of some BTC are looking for various ways to do so. Playing online poker is one of the ways they can potentially win more BTC than they deposited. This is because Bitcoin has high market volatility and can rapidly jump or drop in its value overnight.

Overview of Playing Poker with Bitcoin

The other main reason is that playing poker with Bitcoin gives players another great payment option. There are various advantages to using cryptocurrencies, such as BTC, a few of which are the fast transactions, privacy of data and the lack of a bank or financial organisation in between. Some of the newest poker sites can feature crypto payments.

Of course, it is worth noting that Bitcoin poker allows players to enjoy their favourite game from anywhere in the world. Playing poker with Bitcoin is a great way to avoid directly breaking the law or even going around your bank’s policies that block payments towards gambling sites. Of course, this is very risky behaviour, and it is not advised to do so.

Pros and Cons of Playing Poker with Bitcoin

Here, we would like to give you the most notable advantages and disadvantages that you will notice while playing Bitcoin poker. Since you will be playing with a cryptocurrency, you will need to take additional steps to obtain the BTC.

👍 Pros 👎 Cons
Privacy Need to Buy the Coins
Lack of a Middle Man Crypto Wallet Necessary
High Volatility High Volatility
Great Bonuses Not Accepted Everywhere
Fast Transactions Digital Currency
Low Transaction Fees Immutable Transactions

As you can see, some great advantages come with using bitcoin to play poker. It also features more than a few shortcomings that players need to be aware of. The high volatility can be a double-edged sword. It can both be beneficial if it rises in value and makes you richer, and it can also be detrimental when its value drops.

In order to play Bitcoin poker, you will need to obtain BTC coins from a cryptocurrency exchange, like Coinbase. On top of that, a crypto wallet will also be necessary to store digital coins and manage them. Although the immutable transactions that Bitcoin offers are often considered great, they can also be a disadvantage. The transaction cannot be reversed if you make a deposit by mistake or didn’t enter the correct amount.

Mobile Bitcoin Poker Sites

The popular poker games, as well as the best Bitcoin casino games can be played not only on desktop computers, but also on mobile phones. Mobile gambling is very popular worldwide, and all you need is a relatively modern device. Here is the top Bitcoin poker mobile site:

They are a great way to try a site out with reduced risk, or even just to make one’s gambling budget last a little longer.

Among the best online casino sign-up bonuses available in Pennsylvania are those for FanDuel Casino, PokerStars Casino, PartyCasino, Borgata Casino, and Unibet Casino.

FanDuel Casino: The best FanDuel Casino bonus gives you an extraordinary opportunity. Once claimed, you have a 24-hour window. At the close of this window, if you’ve made any losses, you receive them back as a bonus (up to a max of $2,000).

Unibet Casino: The Unibet Casino bonus is similar to the Borgata’s but on a reduced scale. There is a $500 cap on the deposit bonus and the no-deposit bonus is $10.

What is a Sign-up Bonus?

Sign-up bonuses are a form of promotional offer in which the casino awards a new player some sort of perk. These perks are most commonly deposit bonuses (earned by depositing money in your online casino account) or free bets (typically either given as money on account or a refund after a lost bet).

Although some sign-up bonuses are effectively free money, most come with small print. Often bonus dollars are only released after the player has met some requirement (like wagering a real money multiple of the bonus dollar amount). This can turn “free money” into just a discount on the vig, depending on how severe these wagering requirements are.

A wagering requirement (also called a “playthrough,” “staking,” or “withdrawal” requirement) prevents the player from withdrawing their bonus dollars and/or winnings from free bets until the player has placed bets of a certain value. This value is normally a multiple of the bonus amount. For example, the Unibet Casino bonuses must be wagered thirty times (e.g. the full $500 deposit bonus can only be withdrawn by the player after making $15,000 worth of bets).

The Best Casino No-Deposit Bonuses in Pennsylvania

A no-deposit bonus is an online casino bonus that the player can use before placing any of their own money with the casino. A typical no-deposit bonus is relatively small (with a few tens of dollars worth of value) and will take the form of a free bet, cash on account, or bonus dollars.

Portuguese Tennis Pro “Exhausted” by Death Threats, Abuse From Gamblers

Joao Sousa

A Portuguese professional tennis player has stated he’s “become exhausted” by abuse, including death threats, that he receives on social media from gamblers.

Joao Sousa, 34, revealed the disturbing messages Thursday after an early defeat to Argentine Mariano Navone at the ATP Girona Challenger. Sports journalist José Morgado took to Twitter to share some abuse Sousa got on Instagram:

In his statement, Sousa said the abuse was something tennis players have to face weekly when online gamblers turn on losing players they’ve backed. He added that while several fellow pro colleagues have already come forward about the abuse and “learned to deal with it,” he felt the need to share his experience.

little understanding of what it means to sacrifice to be a professional tennis player”

He expressed his tiredness of receiving messages from gamblers with “threats, insults, provocations and little understanding of what it means to sacrifice to be a professional tennis player.”

He added that while the betting industry “has all my respect,” the people dishing out the hatred reflected the worst of it, and that they shouldn’t forget that the victims like him “are above all HUMANS!” While the ATP ranking chart currently has Sousa at 156, he has been in the top 30 in the past and has four ATP titles under his belt.

At this point, it’s really anyone’s guess as to if these two high-stakes poker players will ever square off mono e mono. They did, however, compete against each other in a ring game at Bellagio in Las Vegas on Thursday.

It went about as well as you could have expected with Berkey seemingly confronting Nik Airball, who gave a little shove.

As you can tell from the above video shared by Markus Gonsalves, there’s more to this feud than a disagreement on who is better at poker. They don’t like each other. Airball referred to Berkey on Doug Polk’s podcast as a “scammer” and claims Berkey’s Solve for Why poker training academy isn’t worth the money.

What’s Holding the Poker Match Up?

As to be expected, Berkey wasn’t just going to sit back and let someone he barely knows attack his business and his credibility. The long-time poker pro fought back and that led to both agreeing on social media to playing some heads-up poker, but they’ve been at odds as to certain details for the match.

That’s where Phil Galfond has been hired to step in and arbitrate the negotiations. Both players did agree on playing three days per week at $200/$400 no-limit hold’em stakes in Las Vegas, although the casino of choice hasn’t yet been determined.

Nik Airball wants to live-stream the match, but Berkey is adamant about playing without the cameras rolling. The Solve for Why founder also is not okay with either player having a coach, a friend, or anyone by their side during the poker sessions. Airball, however, requested that his poker-playing friend could sit in on the action.

This appears to be Berkey’s biggest hold up for getting the match started. Galfond shared a Telegram three-way conversation with the two feuding poker players in regards to the dispute. (NOTE: the following text log is NSFW)

Within that chat log, Berkey made it clear he won’t budge on having another poker player or friend seated near his opponent during the match.

“I’ll get you a puppy if you need emotional support,” Berkey joked.

Polk Steps In

Doug Polk offered a $100,000 freeroll to the winner of the heads-up battle if the two sides agreed to play on Poker at the Lodge, the live-stream show Polk runs at the card room he co-owns, The Lodge Card Club in Round Rock, Texas.

Berkey, however, doesn’t want anything to do with a live-stream, especially run by a poker player he despises. The feeling of hate between the two is mutual. As such, Polk is now offering up his heads-up no-limit hold’em expertise to Airball so that he can “beat this idiot.”

Polk is no stranger to heads-up feuds. In his most famous battle of all, against Daniel Negreanu, he backed the truck up like he predicted to the tune of a $1.2 million profit.

The long-time bitter rivals settled their dispute on the felt and have since become cordial. Perhaps that is what will happen one day between Berkey and Airball. Well, if they ever actually play.
