On May 23rd, Washington-based Maverick Gaming, a poker pioneer owned by Eric Persson, revealed an alliance with Rhode Island-based Bally’s Corporation to officially open the Maverick Gaming Poker Room, which will be located at the 66-year-old Strip resort.

However, the terms of the agreement were not revealed.

Grand opening in June:

Maverick is the current owner of 4 commercial casinos in Nevada, 3 in Colorado and 23 card rooms in Washington, which it achieved through working with tribal businesses, which shows that it is truly one of the pioneers of the industry. Commenting on the planned opening, Jeremy Weinstein, chief marketing officer for Maverick, said: “The company intends to capture players with twice-daily tournaments and the lowest rake – the commission paid to the casino on games – on the Strip.”

In addition, the poker room is slated to have a grand opening in June, with details on the opening date and time to be revealed soon. But that’s not all; as the room will be located adjacent to Bally’s Big Bet Poker livestream broadcast studio at the Tropicana.

Entain, a global wagering and gambling company, will become the new owner of the New Zealand-based TAB by signing an agreement that will secure hundreds of millions of dollars for horse racing and sport.

Minister’s approval of the agreement:

Kieran McAnulty, the Minister for Racing, reported on Tuesday that he had validated the agreement. In addition, the approval will allow Entain to acquire the day-to-day management of New Zealand’s only wagering agency for 25 years. In this regard, McAnulty said: “This is one of the most significant days in New Zealand racing history. This deal will reverse falling revenues for racing and provides certainty over the coming years. I’m confident this agreement will help secure a solid future for the racing industry and sports in New Zealand through increased financial distributions to national sports organisations. Our racing industry is worth $1.6 billion to the economy and directly employs 14,000 New Zealanders. It’s reliant on TAB NZ distributions, and if they were allowed to fall that would hit the industry hard and jobs and revenue lost.”
However, the agreement had to offer few guarantees before McAnulty could validate it, one of the most important of which was that no new jobs would be lost in New Zealand, meaning that all of TAB’s 460 full-time workers are guaranteed job for a minimum of next two years.

The Racing Minister has also made sure the agreement caters to New Zealand racing fans with the TAB’s innovative Punters Promise, which guarantees fans a chance to support any horse and win at least $2000, which will definitely be kept. This caused a lot of concern among many punters as overseas bookmakers, especially those based out of the UK, were often quick to restrict or suspend consistently winning punters.

This agreement is similar similar to the Punters Promise, which means New Zealand punters will be good to go under Entain’s management and will be able to fully embrace the world-leading guarantee that will allows them to actually place bets instead of being banned from doing so.

$150 million bonus:

The agreement includes a $150 million bonus for New Zealand’s racing and sporting codes. However, the sporting codes will be disseminated among the 38 National Sporting Organisations (NSOs), with which the TAB has deals. In addition, the sports codes actually benefit because they paid nothing to set up the TAB, but will get $15 million during the next three years for their sports percentage of the TAB’s turnover. That involves turnover in overseas sports, which due to the aforementioned agreement, will have good payouts for NZ basketball, soccer and rugby league, each sport having high TAB turnover due to the high interest of bettors in their overseas competitions.

Of the total bonus of $150 million, nearly $100 million will be delivered to New Zealand racing codes over the next five years, in addition to increased returns guaranteed to nearly $200 million over five years. Additionally, money from this bonus will be set aside and used for harm minimization and problem gambling assistance. But that’s not all; as part will also be held in reserve by the TAB, a lesson learned the hard way when COVID-19 caused many problems in 2020, which caused many races and sports to cease, which further caused TAB to become nearly insolvent.

However, the Minister gave the strongest indication so far that geo-blocking is close to reality.

In this regard, McAnulty said: “I am also pleased to announce that Cabinet has decided an in-principle agreement to extend TAB NZ’s monopoly for sports and racing betting to the online environment, subject to further work being done. The TAB was set up as a monopoly to fund New Zealand racing and sports. But the onset of unregulated online gambling changed the game and our racing and sports industry has been losing money ever since. Regulating this environment offers a significant new revenue source for local racing and sport, while also addressing the inherent risks in unregulated online gambling.”

To combat these concerns, gambling companies in the Netherlands promised to reduce ” untargeted” advertisements. In addition, they promised not to show gambling acts on TV channels before 10:00 p.m.

Despite promising to moderate the number of advertisements, they were being seen in bus shelters, online, along the highway, and on TV. According to a report from market researcher Nielsen, a third more was being spent on advertising than the previous year. This amounted to almost 15 million euros extra.

With gambling operators failing to regulate their own ads, Franc Weerwind, the Dutch minister for legal protection, is asking for further regulations to be put in place. A Dutch gambling ads ban is just one proposal.

A Dutch Gambling Ad Ban is Imminent

In the summer of 2022, Franc Weerwind announced plans to ban the first set of ads on January 1st, 2023. However, this Dutch gambling ad ban was eventually delayed because public consultations regarding the law were required.

The latest news in a ban on untargeted gambling ads should be in place by July 1st. If this happens, other planned bans will be delayed. If there are any further delays, the other bans will be postponed another 12 months or more.

Proposal for a “Two-Strikes-You’re-Out” Model

The Netherlands is keen to protect its youth from being bombarded with gambling content. A recent survey showed how much exposure young people had to online gambling advertising, with many minors encountering promotions on the radio and TV.

This raised concerns from Dutch lawmakers, and they proposed a Dutch gambling ads ban and other restrictions including, temporary licence suspensions for the big-time offenders.

It would involve a “two-strikes-you’re-out” model allowing the Netherlands to temporarily suspend operators should they be found to be promoting to young people and flouting the Dutch gambling ad ban more than twice.

Weerwind suggested proportional enforcement of the rules and that local regulators should be allowed to correct licensees’ mistakes once they’d been identified. The minister also pointed out that conversation often leads to compliance. His proposal includes periodic penalty payments if necessary, and if a violator still failed to comply, there would be a chance of further fines.

However, he also suggested that the Kansspelautoriteit be given the power to prevent payment providers from accepting payments from non-compliant companies. He felt this would be a better option than the “two-strikes-you’re-out” model.

Is Overregulation the Answer?

The Netherlands remains steadfast in plans for the regulation of the online gambling market, but there have been suggestions that overregulation may be a step too far and that it’s a double-edged sword., according to affiliates.

Three affiliate companies wrote a letter to the Dutch House of Representatives Betstreet Boys, a famous podcast, also signed the letter.

The letter claimed that prohibiting stats and betting incentives forces local players to turn to the black market. In addition, the prohibition of gambling verticals and fan-favourite better markets does more harm than good. One example cited in the letter was a case in which a man in Belgium placed bets on behalf of Dutch citizens.

Weerwind also considers overregulation a counterproductive way of regulating the industry. He felt it undermines the relationship between operators and regulators and channels players toward the black market.

What Will Follow on From a Ban on Untargeted Gambling Ads?

Plans in the Netherlands to further regulate the gambling industry include bans on other forms of what is considered dangerous advertising. These bans, including an untargeted advertising ban, would be introduced gradually. Dangerous advertising includes sports sponsorships and TV sponsorships.

The ban on TV sponsorships is expected to come 12 months after the ban on untargeted gambling ads is implemented. A further 12 months from that, it will be time for the ban on sports sponsorships to be put in place.
