For the second straight year, the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona €10,200 Mystery Bounty trophy is headed across the Atlantic to South America.

Uruguay’s Francisco Benitez won this title in 2022. One year later, and countryman Mathias Duarte emerged as the last man standing in a star-studded field to earn the €104,500 top prize.

The payout is the largest in Duarte’s career, which stretches back more than a decade. He made the final table of the €1,150 Mystery Bounty at last year’s EPT Barcelona before finishing in ninth place. Today he managed to outlast everyone, moving his live career earnings past $500,000. In addition to the first prize, Duarte also pulled one of the €50,000 mystery bounty envelopes and collected nearly €90,000 in bounties, pushing his earnings from the event to €192,000.

Day 2 began with 30 players returning out of 56 total entries. With late registration open for the first two levels, the field swelled to 79 by the time the prize pool was confirmed.

From the start, it looked like Tom Orpaz was prepared to take control of the tournament. Orpaz began the day as massive chip leader and continued that momentum early on Day 2, busting Nacho Barbero with a set on one of the first hands, making a full house to beat Tom Vogelsang’s straight, then filling up again in a massive pot against Vahe Martirosyan. Orpaz climbed near 2,000,000, more than double his closest challenger at the time.

With only the top 11 players making the money, the likes of Niklas Astedt, Ethan Yau, defending champion Benitez, and Sam Grafton hit the rail short of securing a payday. Tsugunari Toma finished as the unfortunate bubble boy, while Pawel Krol and Keith Lehr followed to the rail shortly after the bubble burst.

By the time the final table of nine was reached, Orpaz had built up a stack of 2,575,000. Only one other player, British online legend Conor Beresford, was even over 1,000,000, while Duarte was in seventh place with 530,000.

Duarte nearly had a short stay at the final table. He had most of his chips in the middle in a pre-flop, all in race against Martin Zamani, but his two eights managed to hold on against Zamani’s ace-queen to send Zamani to the rail in ninth place.

Orpaz eliminated Ouassini Mansouri in eighth, turning a straight to beat a pair of nines. Orpaz also busted Ramon Kropmanns in seventh when he called a shove of 490,000 with ace-five and hit top pair to beat king-jack. Kropmanns left with €18,100, but also found the first of two €50,000 top mystery bounty prizes. Orpaz, meanwhile, eclipsed 3,000,000 with that pot as he continued to pull away from the field.

Duarte, though, closed the gap in a massive pot when he shoved the river for 700,000. Duarte continued to take chips from Orpaz until he overtook him on the leaderboard. Duarte led the field at the dinner break, holding nearly three times the chips of Orpaz in second place.

Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel busted in sixth place when Orpaz turned a flush. Beresford, who had fallen all the way down to 185,000, nearly joined Seidel on the rail but doubled up with two eights against Duarte, then doubled again when Orpaz shoved blind and Beresford called for 460,000 with king-queen, dominating Orpaz’s king-jack.

Orpaz got those chips back when he turned a straight to bust Quan Zhou in fifth place, retaking the chip lead. Beresford capped off his incredible comeback when he doubled up yet again for 770,000 on the river with two kings as he took his turn at the top of the leaderboard.

Patrick Kennedy, securing his first live cash after a decorated online career, got his last 870,000 in the middle with two jacks but Orpaz once again turned a straight to send him out in fourth place. Play then slowed considerably once the table got three-handed, as Duarte took down a series of small pots to climb back over 3,000,000.

Orpaz, who had controlled the tournament for so long, suddenly found himself all in for 1,805,000 with queen-nine and at risk against Duarte’s ace-ten. Duarte hit top pair on the flop, and Orpaz was shockingly busted in third place.

Duarte led Beresford 5,500,000 to 2,400,000 at the start of heads-up, and the match wouldn’t last much longer. Beresford moved all in for 1,000,000 on the river with a pair of aces and Duarte snap-called, showing he had rivered the nuts with king-ten for a straight. The tournament ended suddenly as the trophy, once again, prepared to head over to Uruguay.

Zach Gruneberg, a poker player from Pennsylvania with more than $2.2 million in lifetime tournament earnings, recently lost one of his cats, who escaped from his home while he was out in Las Vegas. What ensured was a frantic search-and-rescue effort that spanned a month and a half.

More specifically, it was a 43-day affair “through hell and back” according to Gruneberg, a five-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit ring winner, including back-to-back wins in the WSOP PA Online Series at the end of July.

Gruneberg, who is nine years clean and sober, is on Twitter as @HustlerGrune where it states he is both an anime addict and cat dad. One of those cats is a sleek gray feline named “Nook.”

“Nook is the only cat I’ve had since he was a kitten,” Gruneberg told PokerNews. “He is a super friendly high energy guy that loves to jump up into high places and play more so than any of my other cats.”

How It Happened

It all started back on July 1 when Gruneberg was out in Las Vegas for the WSOP Main Event.

“Back home my old roommate was moving out and my new one was moving in,” Gruneberg explained. “I woke up to a text on July 1st saying that when he went to feed the cats – I have three – Nook was nowhere to be found. This launched a city-wide search and a massive campaign to locate him.”

Gruneberg and his camp enlisted the help of a group called Pet Recovery of Centre County, as well as his family member Joyce, who is an expert animal rescuer.

“We had multiple close calls. One time before I got home, my roommates had him underneath a neighbor’s porch and some random phantom firework went off and made him bolt. We then saw him on our security cameras we set up, basically once every 7-10 days, but he wouldn’t go for traps. We also would leave the front door open but he’d magically show up on the days it wasn’t.”

On July 22, Gruneberg wrote:

I just went and talked to some neighbors down on Honeysuckle drive and another lady swore almost 99% that she’s seen Nook down there as recently as a few days ago. It’s cat heaven down there and there’s many cats so we need to lock down an actual photo of him says the leader of Pet Recovery before we can ramp up trying to secure him. If you know anyone on Honeysuckle please let them know! Thank you. Since writing this another neighbor has come forward and said he’s seen a new grey Cat that matches the photo.

The Capture

One night, Gruneberg decided he needed some time out with friends as opposed to staying up until 3 a.m. with his door open hoping Nook would come home.

“Cats are basically nocturnal so he would show up super late,” he explained. “So, I went out on the town. We set the first trap we had on my front porch and I just went out with my friends. About 11:30 p.m. I got a notification on my phone that there was motion on the one Arlo Security Camera. I proceed to go live on the camera and see him sniffing all over the trap for two minutes. I am just sitting there screaming please go in.”

Gruneberg continued: “He finally goes in but the trap doesn’t trigger. He’s eating the food somehow over the pedal that triggers the trap. I am just losing it and finally the trap closes and he’s secured. Maybe the best feeling I’ve ever experienced!”

Just like that, the 43-day ordeal was over and a poker player was reunited with his cat.

“Why4bet” put on a dominant display at the final table of the 888poker $100,000 Mystery Bounty Main Event before emerging as a worthy champion. The freshly minted champ saw their $109 investment swell into $8,224 with bounties included.

The biggest winner from the tournament did not manage to reach the money place, in fact, they popped the money bubble by falling in 181st place! Chile’s “Billy_Slater” busted an opponent when the mystery bounties came into play, and the golden envelope they pulled out contained a whopping $10,000! You may recall that “Billy_Slater” took down this event in May for more than $9,000.

Ninety-seventh place finisher “Sorin9Serban” helped themselves to $3,000 worth of mystery bounties, while “Tttrrx” banked $3,282 from the mystery bounty prize pool before busting in 19th place.

Once the United Kingdom’s “xxkim62” bowed out, the nine-handed final table was set, and the race to become the $100,000 Mystery Bounty Main Event champion was well and truly on.

“WalnutPix” was the first of the finalists to crash out. They open-shoved for 10.5 big blinds with king-nine of diamonds, and “dali24” called with ace-jack in the big blind. A jack on the turn proved more than enough to remove “WalnutPix” from the tournament. They were the only player in the top 22 who did not win a mystery bounty before busting.

Brazil’s “tutuia20” came unstuck in eighth place, a finish good for $2,402 in total. They committed their final eight big blinds with ace-six suited and lost to the pocket tens in the hand of “Why4bet.”

The final table became shorter-handed when “Smile60” of Canada ran out of luck and steam. “Why4bet” min-raised from under the gun with pocket sevens before calling the 13 big blind three-bet shove from “Smile60,” a move made with ace-jack. The Canadian picked up open-ended straight draw outs on the turn in addition to their overcards, but the river bricked, and “Smile60” had the smile wiped from their face.

“Why4bet” sent another player to the rail when they swatted “bzzbzzbee.” From the button, “bzzbzzbee” open-jammed for nine big blinds with ace-deuce, and found themselves in a world of pain against the dominating ace-king of their opponent. A king on the flop left “bzzbzzbee” drawing thin; they were drawing dead by the turn.

Brazilian “s.totuli” became the fifth-place finisher after a clash with “Why4bet” did not go to plan. The Brazilian got the last of their chips in good, with their ace-jack dominating the ace-deuce of “Why4bet,” but a deuce on the flop held to send “s.totuli” to the rail.

The $100,000 Mystery Bounty Main Event became an all-British affair after Ukraine’s “YAMAHA1311” stalled in fourth. “YAMAHA1311” moved all-in for 14 big blinds on the button with ace-king, and must have thought all their Christmases had come at once when “Swann97” called with the inferior ace-queen in the small blind. However, any elation soon turned to despair when a ten on the river completed an unlikely queen-high straight, reducing the field to three hopefuls, each hailing from the UK.

Heads-up was set when “dali24” committed their last 3.3 big blind with king-ten of diamonds, and both of their opponents called: “Why4bet” with eight-seven, and “Swann97” with jack-seven. Both active players had two pair by the turn, and “Swann97” took down the pot.

“Why4bet” held a 56.3 to 47.3 big blind lead over “Swann97” going into the one-on-one battle, and it was a battle that took more than 20 minutes to conclude. An offsuit king on the turn saw “Swann97” lead for 12/4 big blinds, “Why4bet” jammed, and “Swann97” called off the 18 big blinds they had behind. The river bricked, “Swann97” busted, and “Why4bet” became the latest 888poker player to win this prestigious tournament.

The World Poker Tour has been on the move again once again, journeying from France to Taiwan for another leg of its popular Prime series. It’s the second time the tour visited Taiwan, and with a bigger and better venue change, the players came out in their droves.

The 1,359-entry field set a new attendance record for a Prime Main Event, besting the 1,224 entries, which was set at the Gold Coast, Australia, in February 2023.

Emerging victorious this time around was South Korea’s Seonguk Huh after he defeated France’s Yannick Leonard in heads-up play. Huh captured his first live major title, and his $197,741 payout was the best score of his career so far.

From the record-setting Main Event, a $1,237,387 prize pool was generated and shared among the top 173 finishers.

Huh Sun-Runs to the WPT Prime Taiwan Title

The day began with nine players returning for the final table, which saw Dongkyu Kim and Jacky Wang come into the final session as the clear chip leaders. However, it would be the eventual champion who secured the first elimination. Huh and Guillerm Segarra got in their stacks on the T-9-4 flop, with Huh holding a set of nines while his opponent had pocket queens for an overpair. Huh’s hand remained best following the turn and river.

Huh then flopped another set of nines shortly after in an all-in flip against Feng Wen Chen to bring the tournament to its final seven players. Shortly after, Wang went runner-runner to make quads and see off Tao Wei Chang.

Huh then took the chip lead at around the halfway point after he flopped a flush while Wang had a set of jacks in a battle of the big stacks. Huh further distanced himself from the rest of the pack after his ace-queen sent the aforementioned Kim to the rail, who held ace-eight.

Two hands later, there was a three-way all-in involving Huh, Wang and Tung Wing Wong. Wong missed the board with his ten-nine to bow out in fifth place, while Wang’s king-queen got there against Huh’s sevens to stay in contention.

Wang’s pursuit of the title then ended just minutes later after another trifecta of preflop jams. Wang had jacks, while Huh had ace-king. Runner-up Leonard also held big slick as the three premium hands were tabled. Despite Huh and Leonard holding some of each other’s outs, an ace came on the flop, and Wang was unable to find a jack.

All of the action above took place in the first 65 hands of the day, but another 60 would play out until the next final table casualty. Huh’s sun-run continued as his ace-eight turned a pair against the ace-king held by Seung Hun Ko to set up heads-up play.

A brief exchange between the final duo saw stacks get committed with king-jack and ace-king. Huh had the best hand and a drama-free runout saw him secure the victory.

Two more significant PartyPoker McLaren Turbo Series events have crowned their champions, with those two worthy winners padding their bankrolls with combined scores in excess of $16,000.

The Sunday Party, PartyPoker’s flagship tournament, received the McLaren Turbo Series treatment this week, giving it a unique twist. The first three levels each lasted 20 minutes before reverting a seven-minute clock for the remainder of the event.

Team PartyPoker’s brotherly duo, Jaime and Matt Staples, were among the 1,031 entrants who created a $103,100 prize pool. Matt Staples crashed out before the money places, but Jaime finished in 90th place, and walked away with $187.70 with bounties included.

Each of the seven players who reached the final table ensured they would scoop more than $1,500 for their efforts.

Seventh-place finisher “DogecoinFounder” banked $2,536, almost $1,000 more than “xXGlamBabeXx” despite the latter finishing once place above them. That is the beauty of progressive knockout tournaments; those bounties start adding up. Although “DogecoinFounder” won $940 from the main prize pool compared to “xXGlamBabeXx” who netted $1,335, the former helped themselves to $1,596 worth of bounties, with the latter only collecting $262.

Fifth place and $2,980 went to “Shin-chan” before “Avada Kedavra” claimed a $4,674 payout shortly after their demise in fourth. The latest Sunday party progressed to the heads-up stage when “FLALF” found themselves void of chips, although a $5,321 score should go some way to numbing the pain inflicted by their defeat.

The heads-up duo of “Porrporrporr” and “nando Olimpio” locked in at least $6,132 from the main prize pool, leaving a final bounty payment worth over $6,300 to fight for. “Porrporrporr” clinched their ninth bounty of the event when they sent “nando Olimpio” to the showers, resulting in a total haul worth $12,479; the runner-up banked $8,940.

Back in the “old” days, Jean-Robert Bellande ran ice cold on just about every televised poker show. On Episode 3 of High Stakes Poker Season 11, which aired Monday on PokerGO, it was a bit of a throwback for the high roller.

“JRB” was joined on the felt by the same opponents as we saw last week in Episode 2, minus Eric Persson, who punted off over $500,000. The returning players included Charles Yu, Andrew Robl, Rob Yong, Rick Salomon, and Ferdinand Putra. Robl had everyone covered and then some with nearly $2.2 million in chips when the show began. Cooler Right Off the Bat

It took no time for the High Stakes Poker action to get juicy. On the first hand shown, Robl raised the $4,000 straddle up to $15,000 with 4♦4♥ and received a call from Bellande’s Q♣8♣ in the straddle.

The action flop came A♣4♣10♠ – set versus flush draw. Bellande checked and then called a bet of $20,000 before catching the flush on the 9♣ turn. This time, JRB led out for $40,000 and his opponent called.

When the 9♦ on the river paired the board, Bellande checked, but was unable to find a fold against a bet of $80,000. The $315,000 pot went the way of Robl, who always seems to have JRB’s number. Moments later, Bellande would lose with pocket kings to a flush on the river against the same player in a $211,000 pot.

Bellande has a history of bad luck on televised poker shows, although that’s changed a bit in the past year or two. Early in Episode 3, it appeared he was heading back to the old days.

Robl’s run of good fortune was halted in a pot against Salomon when Q♦10♣ on a board of Q♥9♠8♦7♠ ran into Salomon’s nut straight.

Can Robl Plant the Dagger?

With Bellande steaming from his rough start to the session, he limped on the button with A♠7♠ and then moved all in for $111,000 after Robl, in the big blind, bumped it up to $45,000 with 7♣6♣. Given he already had committed so much to the pot, the high roller legend called and off they went to the first of what would be two boards.

The first run-out was 6♦4♥2♦Q♣8♣, going Robl’s way (of course) via third pair. But the second board of 6♠10♥A♣5♥K♣ was more favorable to the tilted high-stakes pro. With that, the $236,000 pot was evenly split.

Bellande’s bad luck would continue against Salomon moments later, but he avoided disaster with Q♠10♠ on a board of 7♣6♠K♦8♣9♣ as his opponent held the nut straight. Following a $16,000 river bet, JRB folded to a $60,000 raise and lived to fight another day.

Yong Gets the Dream River Card

Yong, who appears regularly in the highest stakes televised and non-televised cash games, wasn’t active much during Episode 3. But he’d wrap the show by taking down the largest pot thanks in part to a generous river card.

Preflop action went as follows: Robl made it $7,000 with A♣K♠ before Yong three-bet to $30,000 with A♥7♥. With both players sitting on well over $1 million, Big Slick opted to just call instead of bloating the pot too much preflop.

The flop came out 2♥8♥7♠, great for Yong, who downsized his bet to $20,000, which didn’t convince his opponent to fold. After the 3♠ was exposed on the turn, it changed nothing, and Yong’s $50,000 bet didn’t turn Robl into a believer, so he made the call.

When the A♠ appeared on the river, it was the exact card Yong wanted as it gave him two pair, and his opponent top pair with top kicker. He fired out a $125,000 wager, just the right price to get a call. Yong took down the $455,000 pot, the biggest of the night, to finish off the third High Stakes Poker episode of Season 11.
