Rush Street Adopts OPTX’s Player Development Solution

Rush Street Adopts OPTX’s Player Development Solution

OPTX, a technology and data firm based in Las Vegas, has penned a new agreement with Rush Street Gaming, one of the fastest-growing gaming companies in North America. As per the deal, OPTX will provide its new partner with player development AI and connect modules.

OPTX to Power Rush Street with Player Development Tech

Under the agreement between the two parties, OPTX will leverage its casino data and real-time insights capabilities to power Rush Street Gaming with player development AI and connect modules.

The agreement covers all five of Rush Street Gaming’s land-based casinos. As agreed, the tech and data specialist will supply its solutions to the venues for the next three years.

OPTX is a tech company that offers a strong suite of products. Many companies have opted to use OPTX solutions as they have proven to boost player acquisition and retention and facilitate communications between casinos’ staff members and guests.

OPTX’s solutions are employed by various major gaming companies, with one of the most recent ones to ink a deal with the tech company being the Viejas Casino & Resort in San Diego. Under that agreement, OPTX powered the gaming and hospitality venue with a selection of solutions.

The Epitome of OPTX’s Mission

OPTX is beyond delighted to join forces with Rush Street Gaming, as attested by the enthusiasm of Brooke Fiumara, co-chief executive officer of the tech company. She called the agreement with the leading operator “the epitome of OPTX’s mission – revolutionizing what data can do with teams that are leaders in their fields.”

According to Fuimara, Rush Street’s decision to pick OPTX’s platform for player development shows that her company has cemented its position as a cutting-edge solution for casino companies. She noted that her team is very proud of the growth of its products and their effectiveness in increasing productivity and profitability for both small properties and casino chain owners.

Rush Street Gaming’s chief executive officer, Tim Drehkoff, also commented on the new agreement. He noted that his company was looking for a player development solution that has built-in operational functionality for hosts and managers. The operator’s ideal solution was one that is simple to install and intuitive to use. According to Drehkoff, OPTX’s platform is just that and perfectly aligns with what Rush Street was seeking.

In other news, two weeks ago, Rush Street Gaming expanded its team with the appointment of a new senior vice president of human resources. The one who joined the company was Dawn Reynolds Pettit, a professional with years of experience in the field.

Who Else Has “Done The Double” on the PokerStars European Poker Tour?

Who Else Has "Done The Double" on the PokerStars European Poker Tour?

If you think of winning two titles on the European Poker Tour and you’re bound to think of two-time champs Victoria Coren Mitchell and Pavel Plesuv. But what about players winning two tournaments at the same event?

Well that’s exactly what happened at the 2022 PokerStars EPT Prague festival — not once, but twice!

After Ben Heath went back-to-back in €25,000 Single Day High Rollers, Rodrigo Seiji duly followed that up by winning the €50,000 Super High Roller to go along with his €10,200 Mystery Bounty title.

Here are some other players who have “done the double” on Europe’s most prestigious poker tour.

Alejandro Lococo

You don’t have to go back far to find someone who has achieved this rare feat. Earlier this year, Alejandro “PapoMC” Lococo took down the EPT Prague €1,100 Eureka Main Event for €417,820.

Just six months prior, the Argentinian PokerStars Ambassador had finished seventh in the 2021 WSOP Main Event, and his rungood was set to continue, winning a €2,200 Deep Stack event just nine days after his Eureka victory.

He recently told PokerStars that he is looking forward to travelling more and potentially win even more trophies.

“That is what I like about poker: the chance to discover other cultures, what they think, what they eat,” he told PokerStars. “That’s what I think is the best part of poker.

“I think I make poker more funny. I think it’s an amazing game”

“So right now I’m not thinking of stopping that. I’m only thinking of travelling to the most important tournaments and getting more trophies.

At this moment, I’m not tempted to try a Super High Roller. It’s really hard to battle them. You have to give a lot of hours of your life to be a winner in that kind of event.

“I think I make poker more funny. I think it’s an amazing game. Sometimes the players get so serious, but I like taking it back to basics. I like the show.”

Alejandro Lococo

Francisco Benitez

Our next two stories come from one of the most popular EPT festivals — Barcelona.

Not just any EPT Barcelona, but the record-breaking 2022 edition that saw massive fields throughout the entire festival.

Francisco Benitez had previously won High Roller titles on the LAPT and UKIPT. Then in June 2022 he won the BSOP Rio de Janeiro Main Event, and soon followed that up with near back-to-back victories in the EPT Barcelona Mystery Bounty and €25,000 Single Day High Roller.

Francisco Benitez

How Uruguay’s Francisco Benitez Dominated EPT Barcelona

Unbelievably, it could have got even better for the Uruguayan who now sits third on his country’s all-time money list, as he racked up two further top-five finishes in €25,000 High Rollers, eventually walking away from the festival with total cashes of over €1 million.

DATE EVENT PLACE PRIZE (IN EURO) PRIZE (IN USD)
Aug. 18, 2022 Event #41: €25,000 No Limit Hold’em 2nd €421,480 $432,687
Aug. 12, 2022 Event #16: €25,000 No Limit Hold’em 4th €191,790 $197,272
Aug. 10, 2022 Event #11: €25,000 No Limit Hold’em 1st €341,565 $350,647
Aug. 8, 2022 Event #3: €10,200 No Limit Hold’em – Mystery Bounty (Event #3) 1st €114,080 $116,263
      Total Cashes: €1,068,915

Juan Pardo

Juan Pardo

Spaniards have a long and rich history on the EPT, even though it took until 2015 for the first Spanish EPT Main Event winner.

But at the High Roller tables, Spaniard Juan Pardo had an incredible EPT Barcelona in 2019 winning two High Roller titles.

The first Single-Day High Roller saw Pardo defeat professional football Gerard Pique heads-up before adding a €50,000 High Roller title just 12 hours later.

Sander van Wesemael

Ok so it wasn’t the European Poker Tour, and it wasn’t in the same event — but this achievement certainly warrants a mention.

In 2017, Sander van Wesemael won three PokerStars Cups. Not bad right? But he won them in-a-row. First in Marbella, then Lille and finally in Barcelona; combined he beat close to 4,000 players to win over €190,000. Not bad for a €330 tournament!

Year Event Field Payout
Aug-17 PSC Barcelona 2,648 €127,000
Jul-17 PSF Lille 558 €28,704
Jun-17 PSF Marbella 788 €36,450

Back-To-Back at the WSOP

Finally, away from the EPT, there are certainly some special doubles at the World Series of Poker. No we’re not talking about Mark Newhouse making back-to-back final tables or Dan “Jungleman” Cates retaining his $50,000 Players Championship title in 2022.

In 2021, no fewer than SIX players won multiple bracelets in the same year. Since the WSOP started, only a select group of players have achieved this feat Scotty Nguyen, Max Pescatori and Brian Rast, with Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth among a select group to have done it twice!

Baltimore Ravens vs Cleveland Browns Week 15 Odds, Time, and Prediction

Baltimore Ravens vs Cleveland Browns Week 15 Odds, Time, and Prediction

The Baltimore Ravens are locked in a battle for the no.1 spot in the AFC North Division with the Cincinnati Bengals. Both are currently 9-4, and with just four more game weeks left in the 2022 NFL regular season, every game can prove crucial. This goes especially for divisional games such as the Baltimore Ravens vs Cleveland Browns game that’s taking place this Saturday in Ohio.

The Browns are favored by the bookies, which is no surprise given the fact that so many things are going in their favor ahead of Week 15. First of all, they got a new quarterback – Deshaun Watson – whose suspension ended two weeks ago. They also have the motivation to win as it would get them back in the race for a Wild Card entry to the postseason.

The final reason why the Browns are favored is that their opponents in Week 15 might end up playing with a third-string quarterback. However, there are some rumors suggesting that Lamar Jackson might be ready for Saturday’s game. With him as their signal caller, the Ravens defeated the Browns in their first game of the 2022 season.

When, Where, and How to Watch?

  • Place: FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio
  • Date: Saturday, December 17, 2022

  • How to Watch: NFL Network

Huge QB Headaches for the Ravens

The Ravens defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-14 last Sunday in their first game of the season in which Lamar Jackson didn’t start. Backup Tyler Huntley was given the QB role in that game, but he had to leave the field after picking up an injury in the third quarter.

As a result, Baltimore’s rookie quarterback Anthony Brown might be the one to get to start the Week 15 game. Rumor has it that Jackson still isn’t ready to come back – he missed the practice on Tuesday – but John Harbaugh might still decide to put him on the pitch as Saturday’s game is very important for the Ravens.

Still, the big question is whether unfit Jackson can produce much against the Browns, who are now way stronger than they were in the first Ravens vs Browns duel of the season.

Browns Plotting Revenge for the Loss in October

The Browns lost to the Ravens in Week 7 with the final score being 23-20 for the team from Baltimore. What’s interesting is that the Browns had a chance to equalize with a field goal in the final moments of the game, but Cade York failed to win three points for his team. His attempt was blocked by the Ravens linebacker Malik Harrison who stopped the game from going to overtime.

Cleveland’s offense did very well rushing-wise in that game, with running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt scoring their two touchdowns. Two months later, the Browns are expected to do much better with their passing game. The reason? Deshaun Watson is going to be in the QB role on Saturday.

Since his suspension ended, he’s played twice as the starting QB for the Browns, throwing for a total of 407 yards and one touchdown. He sure can do much better than that and we might see him improve his stats in Week 15.

Baltimore Ravens vs Cleveland Browns Prediction

In the remainder of the regular season, the Ravens will get to play against each of their three divisional rivals. That said, losing to the Browns in Week 15 wouldn’t necessarily mean the end of the world for that.

What would, however, mean huge problems for Baltimore is if Lamar Jackson’s injury worsened. That’s why we think coach Harbaugh might decide to keep him sidelined on Saturday. Sure, this would probably mean losing to the Browns, but it would also mean Jackson’s gonna be 100% in the remainder of the season.

Picks: Cleveland Browns to win and cover the spread

LJoseph62 Denies Former Super MILLION$ Champions En Route to Maiden Victory

LJoseph62 Denies Former Super MILLION$ Champions En Route to Maiden Victory

It took only one hour and 45 minutes for the latest GGPoker Super MILLION$ final table to play out, and it was Canada’s “LJoseph62” who was the last player standing once the dust settled. LJoseph62 has previously finished third, then second in the $10,300 Super MILLION$, they continued the trend of going one place deeper to emerge victoriously for the first time in this event, a finish worth $291,188.

LJoseph62’s maiden Super MILLION$ victory denied Michael Addamo a record sixth title, and prevented Thomas Muehlocker from banking his second, and Anatoly Filatov his third. Here is how the final table action went down on December 13.

GGPoker Super MILLION$ Final Table Results

Place Player Country Prize
1 LJoseph62 Canada $291,188
2 Anatoly Filatov Turkey $227,406
3 Thomas Muehloecker Austria $177,594
4 Michael Addamo Hong Kong $138,694
5 Sergi Reixach Mexico $108,314
6 Deividas “PDC Mayor” Daubaris Mexico $84,588
7 Biao Ding Hong Kong $66,060
8 Yuri Dzivielevski Brazil $51,590
9 Be Myself Argentina $40,290

Countries as displayed in the GGPoker lobby

It took 30 minutes before the final table lost its first player, and Argentina’s “Be Myself” was the first finalists out of the door. Be Myself sat down at the final table as the shortest stack, and allowed their chips to dwindle to a shade over three big blinds. The action folded to LJoseph62 in the small blind and they moved all-in with jack-four of diamonds. Be Myself called with the superior ace-nine, but a jack on the flop sent the Argentinian to the showers in ninth place.

Dzivielevski Done and Dusted

Yuri Dzivielevski
Yuri Dzivielevski

Eighth place went to the talented Brazilian Yuri Dzivielevski. Again, it was a battle of the blinds that resulted in an elimination. LJoseph62 min-raised to 80,000 from the cutoff, Dzivielevski three-bet shoved for 19 big blinds from the small blind with ace-jack, and will consider himself unlucky that Muehloecker woke up in the big blind with the dominating ace-king. Muehlocker called, LJoseph62 got out of the way, and Muehloecker’s king-kicker was enough to bust Dzivielevski.

Hong Kong’s Biao Ding, last week’s Super MILLION$ runner-up, could only muster a seventh-place finish this time around. LJoseph62, now the chip leader, open-shoved from the small blind with what turned out to be king-jack. Ding called off his 19 big blind stack with pocket tens, and a jack on the turn reduced the player count by one.

The final six became five with the demise of Deividas “PDC Mayor” Daubaris. They came unstuck during the 25,000/50,000/6,000a level. Filatov min-raised to 100,000 from under the gun and called when Daubaris shoved rom the cutoff for 308,410. Filatov revealed pocket tens and was flipping against the all-in player’s ace-jack. A queen-high board missed Daubaris, and he headed for the exits.

Christmas Comes Early at GGPoker With the $150M Gtd WSOP Winter Circuit

The first six-figure prize of the evening went to Mexico-based Spaniard Sergi Reixach. LJoseph62 continued their loose-aggressive style with a min-raise to 120,000 with queen-five of diamonds from under the gun. Reixach called with ace-try of hearts in the big blinds, and the flop fell king-ace-four rainbow. Reixach check-called a 210,000 continuation bet. The turn was a five, and Reixach check-called a 607,425 bet, leading to another five on the river. Reixach checked for a third time, and LJoseph62 bet enough to put Reixach to the test for the 1,673,668 chips he had behind. After some deliberation, Reixach clicked the call button only to see his opponent had backed into trip fives.

LJoseph62 now had an 8.8 million chip stack with Addamo his nearest rival with little over two million chips. A big stack coupled with a very aggressive player was a nightmare combination for the other players.

Addamo Assassinated

Michael Addamo
Michael Addamo

Addamo’s quest for a sixth Super MILLION$ title ended in a fourth-place finish. Of course, it was LJoseph62 that dealt the killer blow. LJoseph62 min-raised to 120,000 with ace-nine on the button, and Addmo defended his big blind with eight-six of spades. A nine-deuce-nine flop saw Addamo check-raise a 75,000 bet to 234,000, and LJoseph called. The five of spades gave Addamo a flush draw, and he checked its arrival. LJoseph62 bet 245,760, Addamo check-raised to 600,000, and LJoseph62 called. The river was an eight, improving Addamo to a pair of eights, but it would ultimately proved to be an expensive second-best hand. LJoseph62 bet enough to set Addamo all-in, and Addamo made the call. Good game.

Huge WSOP Winter Circuit Scores Through First Four Ring Events

Heads-up was set 15 minutes later when Muehlocker bowed out. First, Muehlocker lost more than half his stack with pocket sixes against LJoseph62’s pocket aces, then his last five and a half big blinds went into the middle from the big blind with queen-trey after lJoseph62 had open-shoved from the small blind with the dominating ace-queen. Muehloecker missed the board and busted in third.

LJoseph62 held a ten-to-one chip advantage over Filatov going into heads-up, and Filatov could not claw his way back into contention. Filatov limped in from the button with king-try, and LJoseph62 checked his queen-seven. A queen-four-jack flop saw LJoseph62 check-call a 70,000 continuation bet. Filatov fired a 280,000 bet on the offsuit nine turn, and was called. The seven of diamonds on the river put a potential flush out there, and LJoseph62 checked. Filatov moved all-in for his 786,367 stack, and LJoseph62 snap-called with his two pair.

A dominant display from LJoseph62 who played aggressively, ran hot, and rode their luck, but became a worthy Super MILLION$ champion.

Octoplay, an up-and-coming iGaming studio, has received a Malta Gaming Authority license, that will allow the supplier to further extend its reach in the industry. The studio has produced a number of excellent titles already, including Pearly Shores, Heavy Anchor, and Hot Harvest, along with more engaging slots to name Blazing Touch and Disco Dive.

Octoplay Breaks Ground with MGA Licensing

Octoplay is building upon its licensing game, with the company previously obtaining a regulated status in the Romanian market this August. The company also signed a content partnership with Betsson, a prominent name in the regulated gambling industry, and agreed to provide the company with all of its titles based on the RGS platform.

Octoplay CEO Carl Ejlertsson welcomed the opportunity to further expand its reach with operators and players. He welcomed the new permit that allows the company to cover regulated jurisdictions that accept and recognize an MGA certification and confirmed that Octoplay is looking forward to expanding in other licensed jurisdictions.

“Interest in our unique games has been very high since we launched last month, and we are excited about the opportunities that the recognition notice opens up for us,” Ejlertsson added.

AUSTRAC: Money Laundering Controls “not optional” – SkyCity Faces Civil Penalties

AUSTRAC: Money Laundering Controls “not optional” – SkyCity Faces Civil Penalties

Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) is the financial crimes intelligence and enforcement agency keeping residents safe from serious financial crimes. The government watchdog has begun proceedings against SkyCity Adelaide in Federal Court alleging systemic and serious non-compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing rules.

The civil case follows the announcement of another last month against Star Entertainment Group for the same types of lapses in corporate responsibility generally.

The action by AUSTRAC wouldn’t appear to come as a surprise to corporate governors as it was warned about in October during Sky’s Annual General Meeting.

SkyCity has been under investigation since mid-2021 when indiscretions were exposed during an industry-wide campaign on compliance launched by authorities in late 2019.

Deputy CEO of AUSTRAC, Peter Soros said in a report on the agency’s website that systemic failures in SkyCity’s approach to AML/CTF obligations had been identified.

Soros said, “AUSTRAC’s investigation identified a range of circumstances where SkyCity failed to carry out appropriate ongoing customer due diligence.

SkyCity also failed to develop and maintain a compliant AML/CTF program, leaving it at risk of criminal exploitation.”

Framework Didn’t Exist for Proper Oversight

A laundry list of offenses is alleged in the announcement including assertions that the company failed to recognize the risk it faces for money laundering and potential terrorist financing as well as the likelihood of risk as well as the potential impact. The company also allegedly failed to identify and respond to those risks changing over time.

Suspicious activity monitoring was not possible to achieve appropriately due to the scale of the problem and the complexity and size of the casino operation.

High-risk customers were not subjected to appropriate enhanced due diligence and additional checks.

Another allegation as the watchdog enters the penalty phase of the enforcement action states that no appropriate framework existed to give senior management and the board appropriate oversight of the AML/CTF that were in place.

Operator Ignored Risks

Additionally, it is alleged that Sky “Did not include in its AML/CTF programs appropriate risk-based systems and controls to mitigate and manage the risks to which SkyCity was reasonably exposed.”

Finally, the agency contends that Sky failed to conduct appropriate due diligence on a variety of customers who presented higher risks for money laundering.

Soros explained, “The requirement for regulated entities to have appropriate AML/CTF controls and systems in place is not optional and should be taken seriously by all businesses regulated by AUSTRAC,” Soros said.

“AUSTRAC continues to work with SkyCity to ensure it complies with its obligations under the AML/CTF Act and to ensure it continues to meet its obligations in the future.

“This is the third civil penalty proceeding AUSTRAC has brought against businesses operating in the casino sector. It should serve as a warning to casinos and all other businesses regulated by AUSTRAC to take their AML/CTF obligations seriously and comply with the AML/CTF Act and AML/CTF Rules.”

UKGC Holds Its Ground against Daub Alderney over £5.85M Fine

UKGC Holds Its Ground against Daub Alderney over £5.85M Fine

A court has sided with the UK Gambling Commission over a penalty issued to Daub Alderney which was slapped with a £5.85-million fine last year over failure to uphold social responsibility and anti-money laundering standards. The date of the fine goes back to September 2021, with Daub Alderney seeking to remedy the situation and challenge the regulator’s ruling.

UGKC Wins Appeal Case in Daub Alderney Case

However, the First-Tier Tribunal has sided with the watchdog. Daub Alderney sought to convince the mediator that the penalty issued against its business was unfair, excessive, and disproportionate.

However, a judge dismissed the complaint and said that the UKGC had acted in good faith and that the regulatory response was reasonable and fair considering the offense. The judge presiding over the case outlined what motivated her decision, and said:

I find that there were serious breaches which were similar to the breaches for which a substantial financial penalty was imposed in 2018 and there are no new facts which persuade me that the decision was wrong.

Ruling in Daub Alderney case

UKGC deputy CEO Sarah Gardner welcomed the decision of the First-Tier Tribunal to dismiss the appeal. Gardner dismissed the complaint that the regulator had acted high-handedly and assured that when the regulator acts, it does so out of the interest of the consumer by following the rules that make gambling safe and protect it from becoming a conduit of crime.

UKGC Ramps Up Penalties Against Operators in the UK

Meanwhile, the UKGC has been particularly active this year, taking a strong stance against operators and companies that the regulator deemed were in breach of gambling laws and regulations. Among the penalties issued this year is a $285,000 fine against Aspire Global.

The watchdog similarly slapped Betfred.com, and its Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited operator. The penalty amounted to $3.07 million. Betway was hit with a $464,000 fine and Entain suffered the biggest penalty ever meted out at the hands of the regulator, ordered to pay approximately $20.60 million.

Chicago Plan Commission Gives Green Light to Bally’s Casino Proposal

Chicago bean

Another step forward

The Chicago Plan Commission has approved Bally’s casino plans, marking the latest step forward for the proposed $1.7bn casino at Chicago Avenue and Halsted Street. A late objection on Monday by an alderperson was not enough to derail the approval. The final vote by the panel was 12-1; the City Council will conduct a final review as early as Wednesday.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot has already endorsed Bally’s plans

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has already endorsed Bally’s plans to build a casino resort that would contain 500 hotel rooms, a gaming area, and significant convention and theatre space. The role of the Chicago Plan Commission – comprised of alderpeople, department heads, and mayoral appointees – is to advise the City Council on any major developments in the city.

Some concerns over jobs

The alderperson who objected to the plans was Walter Burnett Jr. He had concerns over Bally’s not disclosing the plan it reached with local labor unions for workforce development, worried that there might not be enough jobs created for local black residents. An executive for Bally’s responded by promising to disclose the workforce development plan on Tuesday, the same day on which the City Council Zoning Committee will consider the project’s plans.

I’ll just raise a lot of hell at the zoning meeting”

Burnett will not support any zoning until he sees the workforce plan, though he has previously been in favor of the casino project. Speaking about his unhappiness, Burnett said: “I want to see that by tomorrow, or I’ll just raise a lot of hell at the zoning meeting.”

He referenced past instances in which minority workers were shut out by some trade unions, which is why he wants to see the written commitment.

Bally’s vice president of corporate development Christopher Jewett promised that all pledges relating to minority workers will be met. The plan is that 46% of contracts will go to female-owned or minority-owned firms, with 60% of all hiring being minorities.

Getting closer to a start date

Once Bally’s gets full approval for its plans from the City Council, it will be able to begin construction. It is also waiting to get Illinois Gaming Board approval in order to be able to offer gambling in the city. If it receives the gaming approval, Bally’s intends to open a temporary casino in 2023. Its current plan is to have the permanent casino ready to open in 2026.

Bally’s was chosen as the winning bidder to be Chicago’s first casino operator in May, beating out competition from Hard Rock and Rush Street Gaming.

Due to the casino’s planned location in the city, manydifferent considerations need to be taken into account, including parking, traffic management, and relocation of the Chicago Tribune printing plant.

APG Launches Inquiry into Public Health Approach to Tackle Gambling Harm

APG Launches Inquiry into Public Health Approach to Tackle Gambling Harm

The All Party Group (APG) on Reducing Harm Related to Gambling in Northern Ireland was created back in March 2020. The group sought to tackle gambling harm and reduce it by advocating for effective changes and launching different inquiries.

APG Announces the Launch of a New Inquiry

On Tuesday, the APG announced the launch of a new inquiry into a public health approach to gambling-related harms in the country. The inquiry is open until Friday 3, 2023 and during this time, the APG will collect submitted written evidence. The public health approach is widely used to tackle other health concerns such as the consumption of alcohol, smoking or even obesity. Pointing to research, the APG claims that the current approach to gambling, which is focused on the “attitudes and behaviors of individuals” cannot determine the impact on public health which makes it less effective.

Ultimately, with the new public health inquiry, the APG asks different experts, academic groups and health professionals to submit their responses. Additionally, the Group called for advocacy group representatives, health professionals and experts with lived experience of gambling, among others to participate in the inquiry and submit written evidence.

Public Health Approach Needed for Gambling, Says APG Chair

According to APG’s chair, Robbie Butler MLA, the call for a public health approach can widen the gap and shift the focus from individuals to tackling gambling harm as a public health issue. He pointed out that this approach is already used for other addictions such as addiction to alcohol, smoking or food.

A public health approach into gambling-related harm would move the focus from the individual problem gambler to a much broader consideration of the causes of gambling-related harm that can then be located within a wider framework of public health policies.

Robbie Butler MLA, chair of the APG

“One of the key recommendations to emerge from the APG’s first inquiry on the future regulation of gambling was that gambling should be officially recognized as a public health issue,” Butler added. He explained that the APG calls for an effective regulation that focuses on preventing harm, providing treatment and prioritizing health. Butler added that strategies for mental health and suicide prevention should integrate methods for tackling gambling addiction.

We call on health professionals, advocacy group representatives, academics, departmental officials and those with personal experience, among others, to take part in this inquiry,

added Butler

Establishing of Independent Gambling Regulator Is Needed

Upon launching a previous inquiry, the APG acknowledged it has seen “overwhelming support” for the establishment of an independent regulator. This is because currently, in Northern Ireland, there is no such regulatory body that is in charge of enforcing the gambling regulation and has the authority to implement fines, prosecute operators that breach the rules and revoke their licenses. This is not the case for Britain, where a regulatory body oversees those processes.

At the same time, the APG recalled data from a 2016 Department for Communities survey which found that approximately 2.3% of the population in Northern Ireland is impacted by problem gambling. In contrast, this rate is significantly lower in Ireland, as well as Britain.
