Coincidentally,
Epona is the Celtic goddess of horses. This
ancient goddess represents the sanctity of life,
fertility, and compassion. It is only fitting
that she be the inspiration and symbol for this
organization: E.P.O.N.A. (Equine Protection of North
America).
Unlike
other animals (dogs and cats, for example), horses
because of their size are not as easily cared for as
they age or for various reasons become difficult to
handle and care for. In many of these cases horses
are put to sleep or sent to slaughter. It is often
much easier to destroy than to try and rehabilitate
or relocate the horse to a loving home. Horses are
often destroyed because of an injury that prevents
the horse from being used for traditional equestrian
purposes.
The
relationship that can develop between a human and a
horse is often underestimated. Those who have
experienced this relationship, a relationship not
based on the ability to ride but rather on
friendship, personality and love, understand the
reward that only this type of camaraderie can bring.
