Isaac Haxton is already a poker legend. But on Thursday, he just might add the one important missing notch to his resume — a World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet.

The future Poker Hall of Famer enters Day 3 of Event #16: $25,000 High Roller (8-Handed) with about an average stack and 13 of the 301 players remaining. First place will pay $1,698,215.

For “Ike,” arguably the best to have never won a bracelet, winning the tournament would bring his overall Hendon Mob results over $37 million. More importantly though for his legacy, he’d win an event in the most prestigious annual poker series in the world, and that counts for something.

Just Missing One Thing

Haxton, who previously represented both PartyPoker and PokerStars as an ambassador, is one of poker’s all-time winningest live tournament players. With $35.8 million in Hendon Mob cashes, he currently sits in 14th place all-time. But only Cary Katz and Steve O’Dwyer, who hasn’t competed in the WSOP for years, have higher tournament earnings but don’t have a bracelet.

Beyond cashing for an absurd amount, the New York native has tournament wins at the European Poker Tour (EPT), U.S. Poker Open, Poker Masters, and his most memorable victory, a career-defining $3.6 million score for winning the $300,000 buy-in 2018 Super High Roller Bowl.

Haxton has never been a full-schedule grinder at the World Series of Poker. He mostly plays a small amount of high roller tournaments and some online bracelet events. Out of his 32 cashes, five have been online on GGPoker. His last live WSOP cash came in 2018 when he finished fourth in a $50,000 high roller.

Facing Tough Competition

If Haxton were to have grinded out 30-40 event schedules for a dozen years like many other players, he’d almost certainly have a bracelet by now. The likely future Poker Hall of Famer is in the money in the $25k for the first time at the WSOP since 2018 and is guaranteed a minimum payout of $79,335.

The top two spots will pay over $1 million, and reaching that point won’t be easy given the stiff competition remaining. Roman Hrabec will enter Day 3 with the chip lead at 6,050,000. Haxton’s in sixth place with 3,820,000, about 1,000,000 chips below his Day 2 peak.

Joao Vieira (4,090,000), Brian Rast (3,965,000), Darren Elias (2,790,000), and Kristen Foxen (2,675,000) are among the heavy hitters still in the hunt. Rast is chasing his sixth bracelet, which could be huge in his quest to reach the Poker Hall of Fame soon, perhaps in 2023.

Haxton, on the other hand, won’t become eligible for the HOF until 2026. A bracelet win on Thursday just might secure his spot in poker’s most exclusive club three years from now. Furthermore, he could take his name off the “Best Poker Players without a Bracelet” list.

After a grueling day that went into the poker equivalent of overtime, Brian Yoon defeated Dan Shak heads-up to claim the title in World Series of Poker Event #14: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

For his victory over the 131-entry field, Yoon earns the champion’s share of $311,433 from the $1,209,000 prize pool.

More historically, though, Yoon becomes just the 33rd player in WSOP history to earn five bracelets, joining the likes of Hall of Famers Eli Elezra and John Juanda, perennial WSOP Player of the Year contender Shaun Deeb, and one of the most recent additions to the five-timers club, Adam Friedman, who got his fifth last year.

Yoon was humble about the achievement when asked about it after his victory.

“Honestly, I don’t try to bracelet hunt or anything like that, I’m just trying to play the tournaments and enjoy playing the games. It feels great, obviously, to be the 33rd to get number five, so I’ll take it and see what happens in the future.”

Of Yoon’s five bracelets, this is his second in a mixed game, having won the $1,500 2-7 Triple Draw event last year, a game he said is maybe his best. The well-rounded Yoon acknowledged that this bracelet was special because of the game that it came in.

“Stud, I’ve been working on this game a little bit, so it feels nice to break through in a game where you weren’t sure where you stacked up, and then you’re able to win. It feels good.”

As for Shak, while a runner-up finish with a chance for his first-ever WSOP bracelet is surely disappointing, he can take solace not just in the $192,479 second prize but the fact that along with his seventh-place finish in the $1,000 Mystery Millions event earlier in the series, he’s well in the early mix for WSOP Player of the Year.

$10,000 Seven Card Stud Final Table Results

The Day’s Action

The 13 returning players were thinned to the unofficial final table within the first couple of levels of the day, starting with Julien Martini’s elimination in 13th, followed by maybe a somewhat surprising elimination of Chad Eveslage in 12th, considering he’s already won two bracelets this summer.

Following the quick back-to-back eliminations of David “Bakes” Baker in 11th and Alex Livingston in 10th, the final nine were moved to the mothership to continue to a winner.

Johannes Becker, who fought back from fumes earlier in the day managed to ladder up to ninth, and from there, it took over two hours before Day 2 chip leader Max Hoffman was the next elimination in eighth place, with Leonard August following him out shortly after in seventh.

At this point of the final table, the two top stacks, Maxx Coleman and Yoon began to pull away from the rest of the field, with short stacks Ben Diebold and Ben Yu playfully needling each other about who would be the next to bust.

It turned out to be Diebold, who fell in sixth place just before dinner.

After the final five returned from their 60-minute break, Yu managed to ladder up as George Alexander was eliminated in fifth place. Yu battled back to a seven-figure stack, but his comeback was short-lived as Coleman finally took him out in fourth place.

Shak was the notable short stack at this point, but things took a turn three-handed as Coleman ran very cold, losing several key pots to Yoon that gave him a solid chip lead.

Things got even worse for Coleman as Shak passed him in the leaderboard, and before long, Coleman became the penultimate elimination of the day, leaving Yoon and Shak to battle for the bracelet, a matchup that Yoon even admitted he wasn’t expecting.

“Honestly, I expected to get heads-up against Maxx because me and Maxx kind of had all the chips through the whole (final table). I respect Maxx’s game a lot, I think he’s a very good player, so I was kind of prepping myself to play him. Then we got three-handed, and I just coolered Maxx over and over and over, and he lost all of his chips.”

Over the duration of their nearly two-hour-long heads-up battle that needed to go to an extra level to determine a winner, Shak fought back from the brink of elimination several times, at one point nearly overtaking Yoon.

But in the end, it was a Broadway straight for Yoon versus two pair for Shak that finally clinched victory for Yoon.

Day 9 of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas took place on June 7, and saw a slew of events take place. There were seven in-play events at once stage, although only one of them crowned its champion.

June 7 will always be remembered fondly by Brian Yoon because that is the date that they came out on top in the 2023 WSOP Event #14: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship. Only 13 of the original 111 starters were present and correct on the third and final day’s action, and Yoon came out on top for the fifth bracelet of their career plus a bankroll-boosting $311,433 in prize money.

Only 15 Remain in the $1,500 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em Event; Herzali Leads

Sarah Herzali finished Day 1 of Event #15: $1,500 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em 18th in chips with a 667,000 stack. Fastforward to the conclusion of Day 2, and Herzali now possesses 12,800,000 chips, or almost 20% of the chips in play!

Herzali was involved in an epic hand against Shannon Shorr, a hand that extends Shorr’s long-awaited maiden bracelet event victory. The hand boosted Herzali to more than 8.7 million chips, and she added another four million betting tokens to her colossal stack before the curtain came down on Day 2.

Three bracelet holders remain in the hunt to add to their collection. However, Ian Matakis (2,270,000), John Monette (1,580,000), and Upeshka De Silva (1,105,000) and the rest of the chasing pack trail Herzali by some distance.

Event #15: $1,500 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em Top 10 Chip Counts

$25,000 High Roller Reaches Day 3; Hrabec Leads the Final 13

Roman Hrabec is the man to catch going into the final day of Event #16: $25,000 High Roller (8-Handed), where the champion receives a most impressive $1,698,215.

Being the chip leader with so few remaining players puts the ball firmly in Hrabec’s court, but victory is far from guaranteed when you look at some of the superstars that are still in the mix. They include bracelet winners Aleksejs Ponakovs (4,470,000), Joao Vieira (4,090,000), Brian Rast (3,965,000), and Kristen Foxen (2,675,000), plus such luminaries as Frank Funaro (5,065,000), Isaac Haxton (3,820,000), and Darren Elias (2,790,000).

Event #16: $25,000 High Roller (8-Handed) Chip Counts

Play resumes at 12:00 p.m. on June 8 and continues until only one player has all of the chips in play in front of them. Join PokerNews on Day 3 of the $25,000 High Roller, and discover who that player will be.

Cartwright Flying High in the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Only 33 of the original 1,143 entrants have chips in Event #17: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, and the top two stacks going into Day 3 belong to a pair of Kyles.

Kyle Burnside bagged up 2,345,000 chips, which are enough for the overnight chip lead, but Kyle Cartwright (2,310,000) is nipping at Burnside’s heels. Cartwright will see this tournament as his best chance to bag himself a second WSOP bracelet.

There are a handful of players heading into Day 3 that are also hunting to add to their bracelet collection. Jim Collopy (1,275,000) has a top ten stack, Giuseppe Pantaleo (1,175,000) is lurking outside the top ten, while James Obst (720,000), John Cernuto (635,000), and Nick Kost (495,000) have a little more work ahead of them when play resumes on June 8.

Event #17: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low 8 or Better Top 10 Chip Counts

The cards are back in the air from 1:00 p.m. local time on June 8, and PokerNews will be on hand to bring you all of the updates as this event crowns its champion.

Monster-Sized Field Competes on Day 1a of the Gladiators of Poker

Day 1a, the first of four flights in Event #18: $300 Gladiators of Poker, attracted 3,940 players but only 129 progressed to Day 2. There is every chance that this event grows into the largest-ever WSOP bracelet-awarding tournament, as latter flights tend to be more popular with players.

Patrick White soared into the chip lead close to the end of Day 1a after winning the largest pot of the night. White’s 3,405,000 stack is joined in the three million club by Olav Prinzvonsachsen (3,085,000) and Dawn Dixon (3,045,000).

A certain six-time WSOP winner Daniel Negreanu (2,250,000) enjoyed a fruitful Day 1, bagging up 2,250,000 chips at the close of play. We are more used to seeing Negreanu in tournaments that have buy-ins far greater than $300, but he will take this event seriously after accumulating a front-running stack.

Event #18: $300 Gladiators of Poker Day 1a Top 10 Chip Counts

Day 1b shuffles up and deal at 10:00 a.m. on June 8, so fire up the PokerNews live reporting pages then to see how large this event’s field swells.

Day 1 of the $2,500 NLHE Freezeout Is Over; Alt Captures Early Lead

Dinesh Alt secured the chip lead in Event #19: $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout, cramming 1,212,000 chips into his overnight chip bag, a figure far larger than any of the 144 surviving players.

An impressive field of 1,139 is now down to a more manageable figure, and it is Alt who is the man to catch on Day 2.

Alt’s stack is massive. Indeed, he is the only player with more than one million chips. Second-placed Byung Eun Shin (797,000) is more than 400,000 chips, or 41 big blinds, behind him.

Others who enjoyed a fruitful Day 1 and finished in the top ten included Jared Jaffee (780,000), Artem Metalidi (761,000), Adrian Mateos (758,000), and Taylor Paur (624,000).

Some of the other stars to look out for in our Day 2 updates include Matt Stout (342,000), Alexandre Reard (338,000), Marton Czuczor (337,000), Mike Sowers (288,000), Maurice Hawkins (246,000), and Niall Farrell (220,000), the latter being a Triple Crown winner.

Event #19: $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout Top 10 Chip Counts

This event’s action resumes at 12:00 p.m. local time on June 8, with the plan to complete another ten hour-long levels.

Adam Owen Bags $1,500 Badugi Top 5 Stack

Any worries that a Badugi tournament would not be popular were soon quashed when 516 players bought into Event #20: $1,500 Badugi. Of those starters, only 183 bagged up chips at the close of play, and only four players reported stacks larger than Adam Owen.

Owen, a British mixed game specialist, finished Day 1 with a 192,000 stack. Only chip leader William Toh (239,000), Yingui Li (217,500), Adam Clegg (212,500), and Jon Turner (198,500) return to the fray on Day 2 with a more substantial arsenal.

Others to look out for on Day 2 include Adam Friedman (126,500), Daniel Zack (120,500), Brian Hastings (118,000), the in-form Chad Eveslage (109,000), and Anthony Zinno (77,000).
