Reaching new heights

The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) just announced its gaming revenue results for September and the state has once again surpassed the $1bn mark. It’s now the 19^th month in a row it has topped the milestone. If it carries on its current trajectory, 2022 will prove another record-breaking year.

For the year to September, Nevada casinos have generated total revenue of $11bn. At an average of around $3.7bn per quarter, the state is on track to reach around $14.7bn by the time the New Year rolls around. That would represent an increase of 10% from last year’s record-breaking total of $13.4bn.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say this year is going to surpass last year.”

Analysts are certainly confident that Nevada will shatter the record. Commenting after release of the new figures on Thursday, NGCB senior economic analyst Michael Lawton said: “We have three months left in the calendar year, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say this year is going to surpass last year.”

NGCB shares the good news

The NGCB’s Thursday release made clear the continued success of Nevada casinos. Statewide GGR totaled $1.25bn in September, an increase of 8% from last year. Within that total, only three of Nevada’s 20 monitored markets saw a year-on-year decline.

Of course, the Las Vegas Strip generated the majority of Nevada’s success last month. The gambling hub saw a year-on-year GGR rise of more than 8% for September, reaching $693m. The largest portion came through slot machines, which accounted for $409.5m of the total, or 59%. That’s a rise of 15% year-on-year.

That said, it doesn’t seem likely this will come before the end of 2022. October saw the return of the Global Gaming Expo to Las Vegas, the gaming industry’s largest trade show. Meanwhile, Adele and Elton John are both due to take the stage in Vegas this November, and December will welcome UFC 282 along with multiple Golden Knights home games.

Indefinite bans

The NBA 2K League has decided to ban six players and a coach from participating in any form of league activity due to gambling violations. The official esports league announced the news on Twitter this Thursday, also outlining how these people violated the organization’s fantasy and gambling rules:

An investigation discovered that Blazer5 Gaming’s Robert Nastasi, Dorian Earl Miller, and Christopher Lafanette, in addition to Jazz Gaming’s Kimanni Ingram, and Mavs Gaming’s Zekirri Dennis either placed bets or tried to place bets on NBA 2K League matches. They did so themselves or used other people to place wagers.

According to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, it appears as if Global Superstar Katy Perry will continue her residency at The Theatre, Resorts World Las Vegas into 2023. Her show launched on December 29th so a one-year renewal would put her right up against 2024 on the calendar. However, we don’t find show dates or ticket sales going quite that deep into next year yet.

Perry’s father, Maurice Keith Hudson, drove a limo in Las Vegas for about 25 years so the lady on the stage is more than a little familiar with Sin City. Her parents found each other in Las Vegas and got married there. Her mom was a freelance reporter for the ABC network when they met.

The man-about-town LVRJ reporter, John Katsilometes also relates how Katy is proud of her family’s entertainment heritage as her grandmother was once a seamstress in Stardust’s production of “Lido de Paris”. The Stardust, which opened in 1958 once stood where Resorts World does now before the iconic resort was imploded in 2007. Also in her near-immediate family entertainer lineage is an aunt who was a Las Vegas showgirl.

Tickets on sale on November 4

Katy’s show is called “Play” and the residency at Resorts World’s Theatre is booked for 10 days in February and then from March 3rd to April 15th. Tickets for the latter run go on sale November 4th and can be found at axs.com/katyinvegas, according to the article.

Her Saturday night show had a moment at the end that caught her global fans’ interest. It seems she closed her right eye and then blinked her other eye while pressing on her temple.

According to Katsilometes, fans online were stirred and some speculated that she was emulating a doll with only one eye that blinks. The crowd reportedly burst into applause at the end of the show and Perry said, “Make even more noise for my band,” after the applause died down.

She appeared to refer to the incident on social media when she announced her residency would continue into 2023. When she tweeted:

“Welcoming all my #flatearthers #spaceisfakers #birdsarentrealers #skyisntbluers to come see my broken doll eye party trick IRL in Vegas next year,” along with the aforementioned website URL to purchase tickets.

Much Ado About Nothing?

It seems like a good-natured approach to play along with fans and indicates to this writer that there was nothing meant by her cryptic gesture at all – but with celebrities seeking constant fame, one never can tell. When I saw the video it looked like a false eyelash was loose. While she was wearing her “beer can” dress, she didn’t pour hops out of the strategically placed can as she does sometimes during the show.

Another tweet joked, “I don’t actually [produce]

hops silly goose! Hope to sing along with you in 2023! And we’ll drink, this one’s on me, cause we’re all #chainedtothealgorithm #therealproblemlolhaha,” along with an assortment of impactfully placed emojis.

Perry also tweeted: “The show’s set list is a fun (ride emoji) through memory lane going all the way back to 2008, a time when we weren’t all frozen by the paranoia of our own echo chambers! This show is a nonstop party about finding unconditional love and strangely (for me) not political at all.”

As of Sunday night, the video on Twitter had received well over 600,000 views.

A great wave is coming. Not of water but of
truth.

Not real truth: Selected, approved, manipulated
and fabricated truth that will engulf each of us from all directions.

The digital age creates new opportunities and
presents new dangers to all who engage with information online and as more
countries come to rely on the internet for entertainment, commerce, financial security,
and news, this ethereal platform on which billions have come to depend will
become increasingly deceptive and manipulative.

In this article, I’m going continue my
reflection on how increasingly difficult it has become to avoid being deceived,
controlled, and manipulated in the modern world but in particular, how
something that in theory was meant to unite us, has in fact divided us.

Ideological Tilt

Gamblers know the dangers of going into tilt where, on a rush of confidence or despair, enormous bankrolls can easily be lost on foolhardy bets made in moments of panic or misplaced certainty.

We’ve all experienced it ourselves from time to
time in our daily lives and with honest reflection, we might recognize where we
strayed from balanced decisions to reflex reactions.

At the poker
table, bad decisions by opponents can be provoked or anticipated by experienced
players using psychology and long-proven tactics that capitalize on a multitude
of scenarios and this is extremely similar to how a professional con artist
manipulates their victims.

As I’ve stated many times, if I know what you
want, I can take everything you have but if I know what you think, I can
easily shape how you think.

At the most basic level, this is how scams work
but it’s also the secret to politics, propaganda, and population control.

One of the enormous downsides to social media
has been the ease with which we have become polarized to one worldview or
another thanks to algorithms that learn what we like in order to feed us even
more of the same, until we find ourselves living inside information bubbles of
our own making.

As a result, it has become increasingly easy for
people to go on ideological tilt where anything that challenges their
worldview is immediately (and sometimes violently) rejected.

For those who seek to divide and control large
numbers of people, this is a Godsend and as technology has evolved, so have the
tools that influence us.

Conspiracy Theories

One person’s truth is another’s conspiracy and
as we navigate online platforms we find ourselves constantly dissected into
various “us and them” categories.

Democrat or Republican? Are you vaccinated? Are
you for or against the latest thing? Do you like Marmite?

The moment you can be accurately categorized,
you become subject to an online barrage of positive or negative bias depending
on where and with whom you choose to engage.

Even now, readers will be trying to nail down my
personal affiliations, unaware they are following their own internal tilt
mechanisms to decide how to interpret this article.

This isn’t about my personal preferences (or
yours) it’s about the weapons being levelled to keep us in a state of perpetual
ideological conflict.

Beyond Likes And Shares

Social media has been the most powerful new
force for mass influence since the invention of the printing press and as
engagement with platforms increases, so does global dependence.

The more we feed these beasts, the more we are
labeled, separated and ultimately, controlled.

Much has been written about how historic events such as Brexit have been influenced by firms like Cambridge Analytica, but the tactics employed by that company have not been diminished by exposure; instead, their methods have been refined and better concealed.

The version of ourselves we present to social
media helps software gauge our preferences then shape what we see and therefore
influence how we think about what we see.

It’s entirely possible to influence two very
different people in different ways to provoke the same outcome in both cases.

Equally, it’s possible to amplify the opinions
of one group and suppress the feelings of another simply by adjusting who gets
more coverage on selected platforms.

If you can’t change an undesirable opinion, you
can at least smother it, isolate it, discredit it, and ultimately neuter it
through multiple methods of data control.

A powerful method used to disarm any piece of
data is to control the data that surrounds it.

Let’s say you post something that disagrees with
an online majority and your post gets a little traction or even goes viral.

There are several ways to discredit your opinion
either by prioritizing dissent and surrounding your post with opposing views or
by linking your post to extremists and radicals, thereby attracting a horde of
equally radical and extremist opinions from the other side.

Quickly, your post – even if it was the absolute
truth – is tainted by the support of extremists and smothered by the voices of
opposition.

Best of all, almost any revelation can be
dismissed by characterizing it as conspiracy theory or right-wing or left-wing
or racist or sexist – or all of the above.

Many times, there’s truth to this but there are
lots of crazy conspiracies flying around; all one needs to do is associate an
inconvenient fact with some seemingly similar nonsense and you can quickly and
easily quash anything anyone tries to say.

These tactics are all right out of the con artist playbook and have now become so common that if the Watergate scandal story broke today, it would be old news in a day and respond into a dozen versions, each casting doubt on the other until the majority obediently dismiss it and anyone still pushing the story sounds like a nut.

An arrangement with Sorare would be a replacement non-fungible token (NFT) deal for the EPL’s provisional agreement with ConsenSys that ended up not being signed earlier in 2022. ConsenSys had attempted to renegotiate its deal with the EPL at a lower price after NFT market valuations fell significantly. The Sorare deal on the table is reportedly more lucrative than the revised proposal from ConsenSys.

EPL is also in discussions with Dapper Labs

There are rumors that the EPL is also in discussions with Dapper Labs for a similar type of arrangement. Dapper Labs currently works closely with numerous major sports organizations on similar projects, including the NBA and UFC.

Sorare currently provides digital assets for other sporting organizations, including the La Liga soccer league in Spain. It also already has a partnership in place with the EPL’s Liverpool FC. Some of the backers for Sorare include major Japanese investment group SoftBank and France’s superstar striker Kylian Mbappé.

The UKGC’s investigation into Sorare

Last October, the UKGC revealed that it was investigating Sorare to determine if it requires a UKGC license to operate in the region. The gambling regulator also warned that the company does not carry a UK license and that people should be careful if they have financial dealings with the platform. It is unclear if the investigation is ongoing or if it has concluded.

Sorare’s EPL proposal would see it offer an NFT-based fantasy soccer manager game through which users could buy, sell, and trade virtual cards of players.

At the time, a Sorare spokesperson stated that the company was “very confident” that it does not offer any type of gambling, a viewpoint shared by many legal experts with whom Sorare has consulted.

GLPI owns the Tropicana’s land

The CEO of Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc. (GLPI) said that, contrary to popular belief, he is interested in acquiring additional property on the Las Vegas Strip, if the right opportunity presents itself. In an earnings call on Friday, Peter Carlino admitted, in a bit of a surprising mea culpa for someone in his position, that his predictions for the Strip’s emergence from the worst of the pandemic were wrong.

“I’ve been chastened a little bit following this latest downturn and recognizing after COVID that the Strip proved to be a lot more resilient than I would have ever have guessed,” Carlino said. “We knew what would happen in the regional markets with people the first minute they could go out of their door would head over to our properties and did so with great enthusiasm. But Vegas, I was a little bit more cautious about it and I was wrong, frankly.”

GLPI owns the land on which the Tropicana Hotel and Casino sits, as well as 57 gaming properties across 17 states. It sold the Trop to Bally’s Corporation in April 2021 for $150m and then agreed to lease the land to Bally’s for $10.5m per year for 50 years. Penn National was the Tropicana’s operator; it sold its remaining interest in the property to GLPI as part of the deal.

It’s just business

In the earnings call, Carlino said that his company was never against expanding on the Las Vegas Strip, it simply preferred “regional” casinos from a value standpoint.

“It’s only about money,” Carlino explained. “There’s nothing that we won’t own, I go both directions. We’d love to have Strip properties. I’ve often said to many of you that I’d own a shack on the beach with no windows and doors if the cash flow was rock solid.”

Caesars is looking to shed a Strip property. One that has specifically come up is the Flamingo, which the company reportedly wants to sell for at least $1bn. It is unknown if GLPI has any interest.

Las Vegas A’s?

The Tropicana has also been at the center of negotiations for a possible move by MLB’s Oakland A’s to Las Vegas. Late last year, CNBC reported that the team has targeted the site of the Tropicana for its new stadium, should it move.

In the earnings call, Carlino did not provide any new information on possible negotiations. While it is not a guarantee that the A’s will move, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said on Sunday that it is probably going to happen. The team’s stadium is arguably the worst in the league, its lease runs out after the 2024 season, and it has not been able to secure a deal with the city to build a new one.

Speaking with Chris Russo on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM Saturday, Manfred said: “I think the mayor in Oakland has made a huge effort to try to get it done in Oakland. It just doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.”

“Given the lack of pace in Oakland, I think [the A’s] have to look for an alternative,” Manfred added, acknowledging that the alternative is likely Las Vegas.

While the province of Ontario, where up to a third of all Canadians live, has embraced a free-market approach to online gambling and sports betting, the mighty province of Saskatchewan is just now embracing online gambling with regulation occurring in Canada and revenues distributed at home.

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) has announced it will launch a casino and sportsbetting site under the PlayNow brand on November 3, 2022. The gambling site will be operated by the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation (SaskGaming) and will be the only site in the province to hold a license based in Canada.

Most online casinos that are located offshore serve Canadians, no matter which province or territory they live in, but they are usually either licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority, Caribbean regulators (Curacao), or by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission located in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake just outside Montreal, Quebec.

Last September, an arrangement between the provincial government and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) to get the online gaming site off the ground was agreed to by the parties.

The betting platform will be provided by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) and based on the PlayNow.com site the crown corporation runs in British Columbia. A similar site under the PlayNow domain is also active in Manitoba, with the SaskGaming making a total of three “PlayNow” destinations.

Specifically for Residents of Saskatchewan

The sites use geolocation software with the BC site meant only for players in that province and the Manitoba site for players in the province between Saskatchewan and Ontario.

SIGA will be the official operator of PlayNow.com in Saskatchewan as per an operating agreement with SaskGaming.

“We are excited to be the exclusive provider of Saskatchewan’s first and only legal online gaming site, which will provide a safe and secure option for residents to play their favorite casino games and bet on their favorite sports teams online,” said SIGA President and CEO Zane Hansen.

FSIN chief Bobby Cameron added: “This historical partnership is the first of its kind with a First Nations operator for online gaming, with revenue sharing between First Nations and the province. This will provide many economic benefits to the residents of the province and our First Nations communities.”

SaskGaming President and CEO Susan Flett said: “The rollout of online gaming and single event sports betting opens up new casino entertainment options for residents,” “The launch timing is also ideal with Saskatchewan hosting this year’s Grey Cup in November.”

“Residents will be pleased to know that when they play on the PlayNow.com site, the proceeds are reinvested back into the province,” said Hansen.

“Similar to the existing brick-and-mortar casinos in the province, all net proceeds from the PlayNow.com site are reinvested back into Saskatchewan,” he said.

Partnership with Rider Nation

Further localizing the offering for Saskatchewanians, the casino/sportsbook has entered into a partnership deal with the Saskatchewan Roughriders football team which wore the Playnow.com logo on their jerseys in a game against the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday, October 22. Additional stadium activations have been arranged to help promote the site to Saskatchewaners.
