A little uncanny

Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, gives away a game or two for free each week in its store. As it so happens, one of the current free games is called Poker Club, billed as the “most immersive poker simulation ever made.” After taking it for a whirl, I can tell you that of all the poker video games ever made, this is one of them.

Visually, the game is fine. Not much is required graphically from a poker video game and Poker Club looks perfectly decent. The tables, chips, cards, environments, are all crisp.

One cool aspect of Poker Club is something you get more from poker video games than you do from real-money poker apps: the game is played from a first-person perspective. When you look at your cards, you actually look down and peel them. You can look around the table at your opponents, watch them measure out their bet sizes. It does help with the immersiveness, to take a term from the developer.

Where opinions will differ on the visuals is the look of the players. Poker Club is going for a realistic look, attempting to make the character models look as true to life as possible. You can customize your character by gender, age, hair, etc., and overall, which is fun, but it also edges into uncanny valley territory. Personally, I would have preferred a more cartoony, less realistic graphical approach.

Controls, layout not well-thought out

The gameplay itself is where Poker Club starts to fall apart. Maybe it’s because I’m used to all the detail of real online poker, but the lack of information and non-intuitiveness of the controls can make the games frustrating at times.

The betting controls are arranged vertically on the left side of the screen and it’s just not immediately obvious how to do anything. In fact, I couldn’t even find the controls on my very first hand and had to timeout in order to fold. There’s a menu option for “controls,” but even that doesn’t explain things fully.

Betting is done via slider, which is imprecise, and you cannot type in a custom bet (or at least I haven’t figured out how yet).

And because the view is first-person, you can’t see all of your opponents at the same time like you can in regular online poker. Thus, there is a player list on the right side of the screen. The problem there is that, for some unknown reason, it’s not always visible. There were times in a Sit-and-Go when the action was on me and I wanted to see stack sizes, what action people ahead of me had taken, and the like, and simply couldn’t.

I did not get the chance to play in a multi-table tournament, because a) the developer was updating the game over the weekend, making it unplayable, and b) the selection is extremely limited and there were none available when I was online. In Sit-and-Go’s, though, there is no display to tell you anything about blind levels or payouts.

Right idea on gameplay incentives, but misses the mark

My issues with the gameplay lead into my biggest problem with Poker Club: it’s just not fun. Look, poker games that don’t involve real money are always going to have an incentivization problem and therefore most of the poker is going to be terrible. You just have to live with that.

Without real money at stake, games like Poker Club need to incentivize players more. Poker Club fails to do this. There are three main methods it attempts: leaderboards, cosmetic items, and career.

The leaderboards are basically useless. You aren’t going to climb them by playing solid poker. I would bet all my fake chips that the people at the top of the leaderboards got there by buying chips (yes, you can spend real money to buy fake chips) and then playing boom-or-bust poker so they can double-up quickly.

By playing, you can earn XP and level up like in a lot of video games. When leveling up, you get cosmetic items like shirts, hats, and trinkets for the table. But first of all, who cares, and second of all, you still have to buy them with chips. No thanks.

doesn’t make advancing in one’s career particularly satisfying

The career is what I thought would be fun – you start in the backrooms and work your way up to the grand world stage. But it turns out that again, you don’t really need to play good poker to do that, at least in the early stages (I have not played enough to get very far). Only a few venues and game types are available at the beginning. To advance, you have to accumulate stars, which are earned by achieving certain goals. These goals can be something like placing top three in a six-handed Sit-and-Go or getting a three-of-a-kind in a cash game. That’s all fine, but at least at the outset, it doesn’t make advancing in one’s career particularly satisfying.

Through it all, the game moved achingly slowly. Much of this is because of the attempt at realism, as there is animation involved with everything. Every chip move, card muck, winning hand celebration, camera pan…it all takes time. Poker is a slow game normally, but at least in regular online poker you can multi-table. Live poker is social. Poker Club is just plodding, which made me not want to try move up in the career mode. I just didn’t want to keep playing. Frankly, the game was boring and I was just waiting for my matches to be done.

Should you grab Poker Club? It’s free in the Epic Games store until 11am ET on Thursday, May 4, so sure. But at its regular price of $20, there’s no point. Just play a free mobile or VR game instead.

A friend and I recently reflected on the number of games that exist with playing cards and how many of those we had never heard of.

Hoyle’s famous book of rules for many card games is far from comprehensive and there are games developed and played in scenarios most of us would rather not find ourselves.

One such game is “Tonk” (or “Tunk”), a fast-moving game for gamblers that deserves your consideration.

How Does It Play?

The secret to a good game is not in the rules but in the way it plays and how it engages the player.

The more addicting and fun a game is – and the easier it is to learn – the more it will be played and when played for money, the more opportunities will exist for cheating or advantage play.

Rummy 500 and its variations is a good example of games that – once learned – can be quite addicting whether played for money or not.

Tonk is similar in how it plays (without the running count across multiple rounds) but is played faster and has been fine-tuned as a gambling game.

Rounds of play can be surprisingly quick with outcomes that can be expensive when doubling or even quadrupling opponents’ initial stakes based on house rules and circumstances.

Tonk Basics

Some rules vary and change according to location so consider this a very basic description of how to play.

The game is mostly played for money with each player putting an initial stake into the pot, but certain situations require players to add to that stake.

The game is a variation on Gin with each player receiving five cards (seven card and nine card variations also exist) with melds and runs being laid down (“spread’) until a player is out of cards.

Alternatively, a player can lay down their remaining cards whenever they believe they have the lowest number of points.

The goal is to get rid of all your cards or lay down the lowest total value.

When cards are spread by players, other players can “hit” those spreads with their own cards so if one player spreads three kings and another player has the fourth king, they can hit the other player’s spread, often with a financial or tactical penalty to the player being hit.

During play, cards are taken from the top of the discards or the unseen stock as each player takes their turn. Players can only spread cards of identical value or a run of cards (in order) of the same suit.

If a player lays down six cards (their five-card hand plus a card they picked) that’s a “Tonk” or “Tonking Out” and will cost their opponents a multiple of their initial stake.

If a player spreads only five cards and throws away the discard, they still win the hand but in most variations, this does not score double from the other players.

Variations Of Tonk

Tonk is a fast game that is open to many variations and house rules.

“Hitting” another player’s spread can result in that player having to sit out for a round of play or for multiple rounds if they are hit several times.

Getting hit could increase a player’s stake or cost an agreed amount each time the player is hit and, in some cases, the player being hit has the option to pay to play and avoid missing the next round!

Sounds complicated? It gets worse.

In some places, you can only hit a run and not three of a kind but the penalty for getting hit can be more severe.

Another house rule might be that if a player Tonks out (demanding double the stake from each of the other players) but their spread cards allow another player to also Tonk out, then both players (or just the second player to Tonk) win a “double-double” meaning players have to pay four times their initial stake!

Additionally, if your initial hand totals 50 points you can immediately “drop” and claim double stake from the other players and if someone else also has 50 you either share the pot or the second player can claim it instead!

As you can see, even if you know the game it can take a few rounds to understand what variations apply.

It’s all about where you play and with whom.

Lew’s friend Frank Zak told me Lew also worked in Casino Security and that Tonk was often played in the break room by casino staff so I prefer to think that’s where he picked up the game, though given Lew’s personal history (he told me he once roomed with William S Burroughs) anything might be possible.

Like many of my friends from that period, his knowledge of the gaming industry, the games being played and the ways they could be beaten dwarfed my own.

Lew lived in the very heart of the gambling world with a foot on both sides of the table but his eyes really lit up when he talked about how a game could be beaten.

The enormous runs total led to sportsbooks taking a win in the points total market Saturday, but caused an even greater loss Sunday. It is a rare situation in which sportsbooks reacted with volatility and a lack of assuredness. 

Giants players, despite going 0-2 in the mini-series, spoke glowingly of the atmosphere inside the Mexican ballpark. 

“I think it’s electric,” said infielder J.D. Davis. “It’s just a great place to play. I have nothing bad [to say] about it.”

“I would say [the energy in Mexico City is] a little better than sometimes in the States,” said outfielder Mitch Haniger. “It’s definitely fun to play down here.”

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has flirted with the idea of expansion to places such as Montreal, Canada and Mexico City for close to a decade. Front Office Sports also recently reported that the league is looking at two expansion spots once the Tampa Bay Rays’ and Oakland Athletics’ stadium situations are settled.

Since that report came out, the Athletics have settled on a move to Las Vegas before the 2027 season.

Sportsbooks will certainly get a tighter grasp on setting betting lines once more games are played in Mexico City. But one group that figures to struggle is pitchers, who are inevitably going to give up more runs because of the conditions. That could lead to lower pay and less desirability.

“God forbid someone is going through arbitration or going to become a free agent and they have to pitch here,” said relief pitcher John Brebbia. “Arbitration doesn’t give a (expletive) where you play, so there’s not a lot of equity if you happen to be stuck [in Mexico City].”
