5 Brutal Cooler or Bad Beat Bustouts from Deep in the WPT World Championship

5 Brutal Cooler or Bad Beat Bustouts from Deep in the WPT World Championship

The World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas will play down to a winner later today. Each of the remaining six players are guaranteed at least $1,001,050 in prize money, but awaiting the winner is a massive $4,136,000 first-place prize.

The road to the final table was not an easy one. Day 5 of the tournament began with 37 players and took more than 18 hours to play down to the final table of six, which will be both live-streamed and filmed for television. During that marathon, several bad beats were doled out including a brutal one that ended the run of Daniel Negreanu in 17th place.

Here’s a look at some other bad beats or coolers that took place late in the tournament and were reported by the WPT Live Reporting Team.

Check out the WPT World Championship Final Table Here!

Yockey Flushed in 12th Place

Bryce Yockey
Bryce Yockey

With a dozen players remaining in Level 31 (300,000/500,000/500,000), Benny Glaser raised to 1 million in the cutoff and Bryce Yockey three-bet to 3.4 million from the button. Adam Adler then four-bet jammed, Glaser folded, and Yockey called off for 10.4 million.

Bryce Yockey: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Adam Adler: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Yockey was a big favorite to double, but the {k-Spades}{9-Spades}{6-Spades} flop gave Adler a spade flush draw.

“It’s always a sweat,” said Yockey, who saw his dreams come to an end after the dealer burned and turned the {a-Spades}. The meaningless {8-Hearts} was run out on the river and Yockey hit the rail in 12th for $338,500.

It’s not the first time Yockey was the victim of a nasty late beat — poker fans no doubt remember arguably the worst bad beat of all time Yockey suffered against Josh Arieh deep in the $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship.

Kogel Coolered

Nate Kogel
Nate Kogel vs. Benny Glaser

With 19 players remaining in Level 29 (150,000/300,000/300,000), Glaser raised under the gun and Nate Kogel three-bet from the big blind. Glaser responded with a four-bet to 6.3 million and called when Kogel five-bet jammed for approximately 17 million.

Benny Glaser: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Nate Kogel: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

The {k-Spades}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop gave Kogel some options, but he came up empty when the {3-Hearts} bricked on the turn followed by the {5-Clubs} river.

It wasn’t a bad beat, but it was a big cooler deep in the tournament. Kogel took his leave in 19th place for $176,200.

Daniel Negreanu Busts from WPT World Championship on Four-Outer

Glaser Flips Out Paggeot

Corey Paggeot
Corey Paggeot

Glaser was flipping well, and that was evidenced by a hand the level before. With 24 players remaining in Level 28, action folded to Michigan’s Corey Paggeot in the small blind and he limped. That prompted Glaser to raise to 1 million in the big blind.

Paggeot woke up with a check-raise to 4 million and Glaser responded with a four-bet to 13 million. Paggeot hit the tank before moving all in and Glaser wasted little time in making the call.

Corey Paggeot: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Benny Glaser: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

It was a flip and Paggeot was looking to hold to stay alive. That proved easier said than done however as the board ran out an unhelpful {7-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. Glaser extended his chip lead while Paggeot fell in 24th place for $144,300.

Gaspard Discovers the Bad News

Jean Gaspard
Jean Gaspard

With 27 players remaining in Level 28 (125,000/250,000/250,000), Colton Blomberg raised from the cutoff and Adam Adler called from the button. That priced in Jean “Prince” Gaspard in the big blind and it was three-way action to a flop of {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}.

Gaspard was first to act and opted to jam for 1.325 million. Blomberg called, Adler folded, and Gaspard discovered the bad news.

Jean Gaspard: {8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Colton Blomberg: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Gaspard let it ride of his heart flush draw only to get that sinking feeling that comes upon discovering his opponent held a bigger flush draw. Gaspard could still take the lead with either a five or eight, but that didn’t happen as the {k-Clubs} bricked on the turn followed by the {10-Spades} on the river.

Gaspard had to settle for 27th place and $119,300 in prize money.

Kings No Good for Brad Owen

Brad Owen
Brad Owen

With 35 players remaining in Level 27 (100,000/200,000/200,000), WPT Ambassador Brad Owen raised to 400,000 from the cutoff only to have Drew O’Connell three-bet to 1.1 million from the button.

Both blinds folded, Owen four-bet to 3.2 million, and O’Connell moved all in for 12.5 million. Owen called off for less and the hands were tabled.

Brad Owen: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Drew O’Connell: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

Owen got it in good but a beat was in store as the {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop paired O’Connell. The {8-Diamonds} turn have Owen a bunch more outs with a diamond flush draw, but the {3-Hearts} river was not what he needed to continue his run.

Owen finished in 35th place for $99,600, a new career-high score for the popular poker vlogger who brought his lifetime live tournament earnings up to just shy of $300,000 according to the Hendon Mob.

Bonus: Insane Three-Way All In

During the live stream on Day 4, less than 70 players remained when a sick hand was captured on the live stream.

Bally’s Branded RSNs Face Bankruptcy as Sports Leagues Back Out of Sale Talks

Bally’s Branded RSNs Face Bankruptcy as Sports Leagues Back Out of Sale Talks

The New York Post reported that the MLB, the NBA, and NHL will most probably back out of their plans to buy the 21 RSNs owned by Diamond Sports Group that account for about over half the local broadcast market in the US.

The decision stems from the fact that Diamond Sports announced it is cutting this year’s outlook for company profitability by 50% which would probably mean that Diamond Sports Group has no other choice but to file for bankruptcy.

Streaming Platforms Takeover Broadcasting Sports Rights

The broadcasting industry has been struggling for quite a while as more and more viewers are moving to streaming services and not using cable TV anymore. Particularly young people have chosen streaming over cable and a big portion of them do not have access to local live sports events. This poses a serious risk for the sports industry of losing a whole generation of sports fans.

In recent years, major tech companies such as Amazon, Apple and Facebook have been trying to get a slice of the sports broadcasting business. Amazon Prime has an exclusive contract to broadcast some of the games of the New York Yankees and has recently signed a deal for streaming NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” this football season. On the other hand, Facebook and Apple TV+ have succeeded in getting the rights to broadcast some MLB games exclusively.

Diamond Sports Bankruptcy May Mean a Revamp of Sports Broadcasting

With this backdrop of changing viewer habits and new broadcasting deals, Diamond Sports’ TV business model seems sluggish and outdated.

Currently, Diamond Sports holds the rights over 14 MLB teams, 16 NBA teams, and 12 NHL teams. A lot of these contracts are unprofitable and the company is losing money because of them as it is not earning enough money from advertising and fees that cable operators pay.

In case of a bankruptcy filing, it is expected that most of these contracts will be rejected by the company creditors through court procedures.

Despite being Bally’s branded, Bally’s exposure to the RSNs business is relatively modest. In November 2020 Bally’s signed a partnership with Diamond Sports owner Sinclair Broadcast Group to pay $85 million for a period of 10 years for the RSNs to bear its name.

A Diamond Sports bankruptcy will open a big void in sports events broadcasting that will probably be filled up by streaming platforms effectively speeding up the process of a complete restructuring of the industry.

Industry experts have noted that such restructuring has been long in the making but before a new model is found there will be some bumps in the road. As a result, major league teams will most likely suffer an economic hit.

Stephen Song Wins WPT Prime Championship ($712,650); Lara Eisenberg Second

Stephen Song Wins WPT Prime Championship ($712,650); Lara Eisenberg Second

Stephen Song battled through a massive field of 5,430 entrants to win the $1,100 buy in WPT Prime Championship on Monday for $712,650.

The World Poker Tour also hosted its first ever WPT Ladies Championship final table at the same venue, Wynn Las Vegas, earlier in the day. Lina Niu came out victorious for $105,136. On Tuesday, starting at 4 p.m. PT, the series will come to its conclusion with the final table of the $10,400 buy in WPT World Championship, and one player will take home $4.1 million.

Final Table Action

When the final table began, Lara Eisenberg held a slight chip lead. The 2021 World Series of Poker bracelet winner from Bethesda, Maryland was in search of her second major tournament title, and her largest payday.

It didn’t take long before Giorgii Skhulukhiia to be eliminated in sixth place ($153,000) when he ran into Eisenberg’s pocket aces.

Alon Messica would soon after clip Albert Nguyen ($200,000) in fifth place thanks to having a better kicker on a flopped pair of aces.

Messica played exceptionally well at the final table and made some brilliant plays, including a sick call with queen-high facing a raise on the river, which you can see in the following video.

Four-handed play is where the pressure was intensified. With the difference between first and fourth place $447,000, the players were in stack protection mode. But that didn’t stop them from making some plays.

Two hours later, Messica’s run came to a conclusion in fourth place ($265,000) when his flush draw failed to connect against Young Eum.

With the tournament down to three players, Eisenberg and Eum would tangle in some epic pots. In the first hand, Eisenberg, holding pocket 10’s, had Eum all in with ace-queen.

If the pocket pair would hold up, she would be sitting on the chip lead heads up. Instead, an ace hit the flop and she was in third place with three players left and Eum was in the chip lead.

But moments later, Eisenberg got some revenge when Eum jammed all in against her preflop with {a-}{5-} and she called and then won with {a-}{j-}. Shortly after that, in another big pot, Eisenberg rivered a straight and was back to holding a big chip lead.

The two poker players played one final pot together and that was yet another race, this time with Eisenberg getting the best of it and sending Eum to the rails in third place ($354,000). That set up a heads up match between Song and Eisenberg, who held nearly a 3-1 chip advantage.

wpt prime championship

Early in the match, Song hit a couple of big hands including a monster pot he won with quad jacks. The contest had completed shifted quickly in his favor, and then on the 165th hand at the final table, he won a cooler when he turned a straight to crack flopped top two pair, which put an end to the tournament.

Eisenberg, a radiologist, received $481,500 for second place, but the champion of the whole thing, Stephen Song earned $712,650.

Sergi Reixach Is Running Away in the GGPoker Super MILLION$

Sergi Reixach Is Running Away in the GGPoker Super MILLION$

The penultimate GGPoker Super MILLION$ of 2022 has reached its final table after 139 of online poker’s best players were whittled to only nine on Day 1. The nine finalists return to the action from 6:00 p.m. GMT on December 20 to play for the bulk of the $1,390,000 prize pool. First place prize money weighs in at a cool $302,053.

Mexico-based Spaniard Sergi Reixach finds himself in pole position when the race for the six-figure prizes begins. Indeed, Reixach’s stack is so substantial that he can afford to double up any of his opponents and still be the tournament’s chip leader. It is Reixach’s tournament to lose, but as we have seen before, holding a commanding lead in this $10,300 buy-in event does not guarantee you come out of the other side with the title in tow.

Reixach returns to battle at what is only his fourth Super MILLION$ final table with 4,968,497 chips, or 142 big blinds in old money. The talented Spaniard finished sixth and ninth at back-to-back final tables in July 2021, and finished fifth last week as “LJoeseph62” marched onto victory. The ball is truly in Reixach’s court such is the size of his colossal chip lead.

Israel’s Barak Wisbrod continues his impressive recent form in the Super MILLION$ with another final table appearance. Wisbrod finished second to “WOOLOOLOO” on November 22nd, and busted fifth on December 6 for $389,897 inthe WSOP Winter Circuit edition of the event. Wisbrod has a war chest of 2,417,120 chips (69 big blinds) at his disposal when play resumes.

Pedro Garagnani of Brazil occupies third place courtesy of his 2,093,107 chips (60 big blinds). The Brazilian is a regular in the Super MILLION$, but he still awaits his maiden victory. This is the sixth time Garagnani has found himself at the final table, and the first time since he finished as runner-up to Alex “FutureofMe” Kulev on November 2, 2022.

GGPoker Super MILLION$ Final Table Payouts

1 $302,053
2 $235,891

4 $143,869
5 $112,355
6 $87,745
7 $68,525
8 $53,515
9 $41,793

Mexico-based “RetourAuLobby” is looking to continue their 100% final table strike rate when they sit down behind 1,153,007 chips (33 big blinds). RetourAuLobby navigated their way to the final table of the Super MILLION$ on November 15, their first such appearance. They went all the way, defeating Eelis Parssinen heads-up to capture the $327,250 top prize. Will history repeat itself today?

China’s “XavierXu” is an unknown quantity at this final table, and that could work in their favor. XavierXu has one Super MILLION$ cash on their resume, a 17th place finish on November 22. That result came with $23,769, the bulk of the Chinese grinder’s $65,526 of GGPoker winnings.

Fans of Anatoly Filatov will be delighted to learn their hero has reached his fourth Super MILLION$ final table since November 2. However, they will be less enthralled to learn his 715,296 stack is the equivalent of 20 big blinds, which placed him sixth when play resumes. Filatov has won this event twice during his career, with his Super MILLION$ earnings accounting for more than $3.36 million of his $9.58 million in GGPoker earnings.

Soufiane “no bueno” Jaloulate Becomes a Millionaire at GGPoker

“Zombie Chow” plays out of Montenegro and is looking to make it a case of third time lucky as they chase down their first Super MILLION$ title. They have an eighth and fifth-place finish in this tournament, but have plenty of work ahead of them if they want to become this event’s champion because their 572,140 chips are only worth 16 big blinds.

The second shortest stack, 557,873 chips (16 big blinds), belongs to Nikita Kuznetsov. An eighth-place finish on November 29 is the best Super MILLION$ result for Kuznetsov. While this event has not been kind to Kuznetsov, he does have an APL title to his name along with more than $3.8 million in GGPoker cashes.

“BananenBencb789” of Austria is the final table’s short stack, propping up the chip counts with their 509,136 stack (15 big blinds). The Austrian has never finished higher than 13th in the Super MILLION$ before today, should they managed to turn around their flagging fortunes and finish second or better, their lifetime GGPoker winnings will pass through $1 million.

MGM Resorts to Invest $2B in Macau Following New Concession

MGM Resorts to Invest $2B in Macau Following New Concession

International casino operator MGM Resorts has announced its plans to invest two extra billion in its Grand Paradise casino in Macau, China. Despite the recent setbacks experienced by the special administrative region’s gaming industry, MGM Resorts continues to firmly believe in the region’s potential.

MGM Resorts Will Support Its Macau Subsidiary

MGM Resorts’ Chinese subsidiary, MGM China, was recently awarded a new 10-year gaming concession contract, allowing the company to continue its operations in the country. Following the happy news, the operator expressed its intentions to invest $2 billion in the local casino over the next decade.

According to the announcement, half of this sum will be treated as capital expenditures. The other part, meanwhile, will cover the casino’s operating expenses.

In addition, MGM Resorts announced that around 90% of the operating expense will be set for boosting tourism and non-gaming facilities. In addition, the company will work to further diversify its offerings for gaming and non-gaming visitors of its Macau-based property.

At the same time, the operator will also expand its casino content with 200 new gaming tables. This will raise the total number of Grand Paradise tables for gaming to 750, allowing more people to play at the same time.

The aforementioned allocation of the resources at hand is not final and is subject to change depending on MGM China’s needs. Furthermore, capital projects and expenses are still subject to review and approval, MGM warned, meaning that the operator’s plans may deviate from its current intentions.

Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts International’s chief executive officer and president, spoke about the latest developments. He said that he is extremely happy at the opportunity to continue his company’s business in Macau. He thanked the Macau government for trusting MGM Resorts and providing it with a new 10-year concession.

The CEO noted that his company has always believed in Macau’s potential and promised that MGM will continue supporting its local team.

As Macau is entering a new milestone, we will continue to share our international network, experience and resources with the Macau team.

Bill Hornbuckle, CEO, MGM Resorts International

Lastly, Hornbuckle concluded that he is confident that MGM China will eventually recover from the current setbacks and will demonstrate its strengths as a tourism and leisure company. The CEO is certain that Pansy Ho, MGM China’s managing director, will lead the team to success.

In November, MGM Resorts provided its Macau-based subsidiary with a $750 million loan.

49ers QB Brock Purdy Climbs to Fifth in Offensive Rookie of the Year Betting Odds

San Francisco 49ers logo

Brock Purdy: Offensive Rookie of the Year?

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock “Mr. Irrelevant” Purdy has improbably climbed into the top five in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year (OROY) odds.

the team has not missed a beat since switching over to him

The Niners’ QB started the year listed third on the depth chart, but is now poised to lead them into the playoffs, where they are expected to make a lot of noise. His three stints of extended action have all finished as resounding successes and the team has not missed a beat since switching over to him.

With just three games remaining in the regular season, Purdy is racing against the clock to win the award handed out annually to the best first-year pro on offense. He will have to topple several established candidates, but is, if nothing else, the hottest name on the block.

Joining the race late

Purdy is filling in for longtime San Francisco QB Jimmy Garoppolo, who broke his foot in a Week 13 win over the Miami Dolphins. Original starter Trey Lance was lost for the season in Week 2 after suffering a fractured ankle.

The unsuspecting rookie had only previously made headlines for being the annual recipient of the “Mr. Irrelevant” nickname awarded to the last pick in the NFL Draft. His performances have gone above and beyond what was expected of him, though, and he now looks like a potential solution to San Francisco’s QB struggles.

helped trounce the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady 35-7 in his first career start

Purdy has 678 yards, seven total touchdowns and two interceptions in his first professional campaign and is 2-0 as a starter. He recently led the Niners to a primetime win over their division rival Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football and helped trounce the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady 35-7 in his first career start.

According to PointsBet sportsbook, Purdy (+1500) is now fifth in the list of odds to win the OROY. He trails:

  • New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson (+110)
  • Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III (+350)
  • Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson (+400)
  • New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave (+500)

Purdy will struggle to make his case with raw statistics, but he has a real chance to prove his worth with the power of narratives, especially with what could be in store for the 49ers.

The path to the award

The Rookie of the Year award only deals with the regular season, which is unfortunate for Purdy. His team has the second-best odds to win the NFC Championship and advance to the Super Bowl, and he would significantly benefit from adding playoff success to his resume if it was taken into account during the award voting.

stepped into a ready-made offense

With only three weeks left to convince voters, Purdy will likely need to win out while still playing clean and effective football. On the plus side, he stepped into a ready-made offense with first-team all-pros at wideout (Deebo Samuel), running back (Christian McCaffrey), tight end (George Kittle), and left tackle (Trent Williams). He also has the benefit of playing for one of the sharpest offensive minds in football, Kyle Shanahan.

Purdy also is not asked to do too much in San Francisco’s offense. He takes a lot of first reads in the short and intermediate passing game, gets the ball to playmakers, and errs on the side of caution. While all of that should help the Niners win games, it could hinder his statistical potential.

Coming up on the 49ers’ schedule are games against the Washington Commanders and Arizona Cardinals with a road trip to the Las Vegas Raiders in between. They are expected to be favored in all three, including next week’s game against a Washington team that was hard done by the referees on Sunday Night Football.

Assuming Purdy takes the field for the rest of the season, he will finish with appearances in just nine of 17 possible games, with three of those being very brief cameos. That would be the fewest number of games played by an offensive rookie of the year since then-Los Angeles Raiders’ running back Marcus Allen won the award in 1982.
