Hard Rock Completes $1bn Mirage Casino Purchase

A historic moment

MGM Resorts International has confirmed that the $1bn sale of the Mirage to Hard Rock International is complete. As a result, the Seminole Tribe-owned Hard Rock is the first tribal casino operator in the history of the Las Vegas Strip. The company took control of the property’s operations at 6am on Monday.

rent will start out at $90m

Real estate investment trust (REIT) VICI Properties, which owns the real estate on which the Mirage sits, announced on Monday that it has entered into a long-term lease with Hard Rock. Annual rent will start out at $90m and Hard Rock will retain the 3,500 existing Mirage employees. All existing reservations will be honored.

Big renovation plans

Hard Rock has already revealed its initial plans to conduct a mega-renovation of the property in the coming years, including the construction of a large guitar-shaped hotel tower. The property will remain open for the first 18 months of Hard Rock’s operations, but it might have to close during some of the construction work. The operator plans to release more details about its plans towards the end of next year.

property will be known as the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas

While the Mirage name will remain for the time being, following the completion of the renovation work the property will be known as the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. It appears that the famous volcano attraction at the property will eventually be removed.

Welcomed with open arms

Speaking about taking over the operations on Monday, Hard Rock International chairman Jim Allen said: “We are excited to create an integrated resort on the Strip that will make this legendary entertainment community proud.” MGM Resorts International president and CEO Bill Hornbuckle in a statement welcomed Hard Rock to the Strip and wished the company all the best.

The Mirage was opened in 1989 by prominent casino developer Steve Wynn. It was the first modern mega casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Hard Rock initially announced in December 2021 its intention to buy the Mirage. The operator has received all of the necessary regulatory approvals to go ahead with its acquisition, including the final seasl of approval from the Nevada Gaming Commission on Friday.

Hard Rock Donates $1M for Breast Cancer Research

Hard Rock Donates $1M for Breast Cancer Research

Hard Rock International, an international company operating casinos, restaurants and shops, announced that the 23rd edition of its annual Pinktober campaign has raised $1 million for breast cancer research. This is one of the most successful years for Pinktober yet and will see the money donated to the American Cancer Society.

Hard Rock Supported Breast Cancer Research

Pinktober is Hard Rock’s annual initiative that sees the operator raise funds for the research of breast cancer, showing solidarity with many women around the world. To do so, Hard Rock’s properties, including the casinos, Hard Rock Cafes and Rock Shops offer limited-edition October-exclusive products.

These products usually include special menu items and limited-edition merchandise. In addition, Hard Rock International usually holds a charity songwriting contest and other activations, helping it gather enough money to donate.

This year’s Pinktober campaign performed noticeably better than the 2021 edition. For reference, this year’s iteration of the initiative saw Hard Rock raise a million for its cause – a significant improvement on last year’s $700,000.

Pinktober is one of Hard Rock’s biggest charity initiatives and has seen the company contribute to cancer research ever since 2000.

Celebrities Backed the Initiative

This year’s edition of the Pinktober campaign was headlined by Dominique Crenn, a famous French chef who has previously beaten breast cancer. Another celebrity that supported the operator’s initiative was the musician David Correy who helped with the songwriting contest. Correy is very invested in the cause because his mother passed away from breast cancer.

Hard Rock International’s chief operating officer, Jon Lucas, spoke about the initiative and called Pinktober “one of the most highly anticipated and celebrated times of the year at Hard Rock.”

Each October, our company divisions and properties around the globe truly personify our mottos of ‘Love All – Serve All’ and ‘Take Time To Be Kind’ by joining together to support breast cancer awareness and research.

Jon Lucas, COO, Hard Rock International

Lucas said that Hard Rock’s team was delighted to welcome chef Crenn and the talented Correy as partners of Hard Rock International and supporters of the Pinktober mission. He emphasized that both of them had been impacted by breast cancer and praised them for their willingness to join such a campaign.

In other news, Hard Rock just finalized its acquisition of the iconic The Mirage casino in Las Vegas. The operator acquired the property from MGM Resorts after securing approval from the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Plainridge Park Overcomes Barstool Concerns to Get Massachusetts Sports Betting License

Three thumbs up

Getting the green light

Plainridge Park Casino has become the third and final Massachusetts casino to obtain a retail sports betting license. It got the all-clear for a temporary license from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) on Tuesday, despite the gaming regulator having concerns about the property’s links with the controversial Barstool Sports.

voted unanimously to approve the sports betting license

The MGC ultimately voted unanimously to approve the sports betting license for the Penn Entertainment-owned property. Certain conditions were put in place before the vote took place; once it meets all the requirements, a retail sportsbook under the Barstool brand will be able to open at the Plainridge Park Casino in early February.

One of the main conditions is that Barstool Sports will be subject to a thorough suitability and background investigation by the Massachusetts Investigation and Enforcement Bureau when Penn Entertainment completes its acquisition of the sports media company in February 2023. Additionally, Barstool Sports can only allow people who are at least 21 years old at its Barstool Sports College Football shows in the future.

Certain concerns

MGC commissioners had concerns about the knock-on effect of Barstool Sports’ presence in the sports betting space as it has large numbers of followers who are underage. Some Barstool Sports shows have been held on college campuses or nearby.

One such show on the University of Toledo campus led to the company getting fined $250,000 by the Ohio Casino Control Commission. During the show, personalities urged people in the audience to sign up for the Barstool Sports betting app. There was no age restriction in place for the event.

concerns about the founder of Barstool Sports Dave Portnoy

The original hearing for the casino property’s license proposal took place a couple of weeks ago. Commissioners had a lot of concerns about the founder of Barstool Sports Dave Portnoy. During the meeting on Tuesday, Penn Entertainment president Jay Snowden explained that Barstool Sports is just a marketing partner for Penn Entertainment and has no control over decisions made at the Plainridge Park sportsbook.

A busy time for the MGC

The plan was for the MGC to also consider the application from Penn Sports Interactive on Tuesday regarding an online sports betting license. However, the meeting had already long, so the topic was postponed until January 3.

The current expectation is that retail sportsbooks will be able to start launching in late January, while online sportsbooks could be good to go in March.

It has been a busy few weeks for the MGC as it sifts through the various sports betting license applications it has received; it has already awarded retail sports betting licenses to the MGM Springfield and the Encore Boston Harbor casinos. The gaming regulator has also ruled on some online sports betting licenses, including one for BetMGM.

Survey: 86% Of Clients Are Highly Satisfied with SOFTSWISS Casino Platform

A deep industry survey reveals that transparent cooperation, simple and quick communication, top service level, and a variety of game providers are the most significant criteria for selecting an iGaming provider in 2022. The said business research was conducted by Kantar Ukraine, a leading marketing research company, on behalf of SOFTSWISS for the period between July and October 2022.

The software development company wanted to obtain detailed knowledge and information about the iGaming sector and to be aware of the most important criteria when selecting a casino platform provider. SOFTSWISS also aimed to gain information on how satisfied the clients are with the SOFTSWISS Casino Platform in comparison with other competitive platforms.

Characteristics of the Winning iGaming Operator

Per the survey, in 2022 the most crucial characteristics of an iGaming provider partner include transparent cooperation, support in income generation activities, and services and products that satisfy the needs of your company.

In this study, 93% of the respondents answered that the “provider should be a financial partner,” which is an increase in the significance of this criterion compared to 63% in 2021. The other criteria, which include “Prompt resolution of tech issues and response” and “Flexibility when discussing the terms of cooperation” gathered the same percentage as in 2021.

SOFTSWISS clients listed “Provides top service level” and “Simple and quick communication with managers” as the most important features when it comes to personal touch aspects, which influence the decision-making process.

“Attentive attitude to each client“ was another criterion, which gained higher priority compared to the last year’s results.

Characteristics of Top Casino Platform

Darya Avtukhovich, head of SOFTSWISS Casino Platform, commented that until now, the staff behind the SOFTSWISS Casino Platform has launched nearly 400 successful projects, making this product “the biggest and most meaningful” offer in SOFTSWISS portfolio.

Per the clients, SOFTSWISS has outperformed its rivals with regard to the service support level and communication with business account managers.

Kindred Group Veteran Resigns after 13 Years with the Company

Kindred Group Veteran Resigns after 13 Years with the Company

Maris Catania, head of responsible gaming and research at global iGaming leader Kindred Group, announced her leave from the company via her official LinkedIn profile. Catania has been part of Kindred’s team since 2009, rising through the thanks to her professionalism and multi-faceted expertise. She will be replaced by Esther Scheepers, another leading responsible gaming specialist.

Catania Is an Award-Winning Expert

Catania’s journey with Kindred is a fine example of corporate growth through hard work and dedication. She joined the company in January 2009 as a fraud analyst- her first high-profile job after graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Malta. Determined to pursue this line of work, she specialized in responsible gaming, eventually earning a doctor’s degree from Nottingham Trent University, focusing on problem gambling.

During her 13 years with the company, Catania steadily climbed the corporate ladder, eventually joining Kindred’s management team. Her most notable contribution to the company is likely Kindred’s Player Safety – Early Detection System (PS-EDS), which won the EGR Innovation of the Year award in 2014. Her other work in the field also merited widespread acclaim, elevating her as one of the leading responsible gaming experts.

Her Departure Shook the Industry

Maris Catania’s departure from Kindred happens on good terms. In her official LinkedIn announcement, she thanked the company for the opportunities, reflecting on the rising importance of responsible gaming during her time there. She expressed hope that Kindred would continue with her research projects and initiatives.

After finalizing her leave from the company, Catania’s work will be taken up by Esther Scheepers, who also possesses substantial experience in the field. The former head of responsible gaming noted that the position was in good hands and wished her successor luck. Speaking of her plans, Catania added that she planned to launch a local consultancy, hoping to utilize her substantial expertise.

I want to expand my knowledge to other areas and hopefully help others through RG research and RG initiatives.

Maris (Bonello) Catania

The announcement caused a surge of comments from colleagues and associates. Secretary general at the European Gaming and Betting Association Maarten Haijer wished her the best of luck, lauding her responsible gaming efforts. Many former colleagues shared some of their mutual experiences, expressing sadness at her departure.

Scheepers Has Large Shoes to Fill

Esther Scheepers will take up Catania’s role at Kindred. With over ten years of responsible gaming expertise, she has the skills and knowledge to continue the company’s efforts in that field. Well-familiar with Catania’s PS-EDS system, she should be more than capable of picking off where her predecessor left.

Scheepers’s immediate goal at Kindred will be to achieve the operator’s objective of 0% revenue from gambling-related harm by 2023. Her approach focuses on adapting gambling harm-related research to the real world, implementing it in Kindred’s overall RG guidelines. Only time will tell whether she will be a worthy successor to a legendary figure such as Catania, but her predecessor left all the tools to give her the best chance of success.

Green Bay Packers vs Miami Dolphins Week 16 Odds, Time, and Prediction

Green Bay Packers vs Miami Dolphins Week 16 Odds, Time, and Prediction

Despite beating the Los Angeles Rams in the MNF game of Week 15, the Green Bay Packers still have only a tiny chance to make the playoffs. Even if they win all of their remaining games of the 2022 regular season, they will have a 5% chance to advance to the postseason.

If you take a look at their schedule, you’ll see that it’s not very likely they’re going to go 3-0 in the remainder of the season. The thing is that they get to play against three very tough opponents, starting with the Miami Dolphins on Christmas Day.

In fact, oddsmakers think they’re going to lose the Week 16 game to the boys from Florida, who too are in need of wins to secure a playoff berth.

The Dolphins are a Win (or Two) Away From the Playoffs

The Dolphins are a Win (or Two) Away From the PlayoffsIf the Miami Dolphins beat the Packers on Christmas Day, their chance of making the playoffs will go up to 81%. If they lose, however, it will drop to 56%. Of course, this doesn’t only have to do with them, but with other NFC teams as well. That said, in the best-case scenario, Mike McDaniel’s men could secure a playoff spot before the end of the regular season.

Knowing this, it’s clear they’re going to take Sunday’s game very seriously. This goes especially because the alarms are ringing in their locker room after three straight losses. To be fair to them, each of those losses happened against really strong opponents – San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Buffalo Bills.

The loss to the Bills happened last weekend at super-cold Highmark Stadium. Despite not being used to extreme weather conditions, Miami players actually did okay in that game, losing by just a field goal in the end.

The Packers Still Not Giving Up

If they lose to the Dolphins, their chance of making the playoffs will be virtually zero. Even if they win, it won’t improve much, which is very bad news for Aaron Rodgers & Co.

Still, they don’t seem to care about it. At least, that’s the impression we get after their 24-12 win over the reigning NFL champions, the Los Angeles Rams.

They beat them without any major problems last Monday, but to be fair to the Rams, they did play without a number of their key men in that game. That said, the Packers shouldn’t be too proud of their performance that evening.

Packers vs Dolphins Prediction

In 2022, the Dolphins are a better team that the Packers. This goes especially for the games played on their turf. In sunny Miami, they’re 5-1 this season. The Christmas Day game against the Packers is going to be the Dolphins’ first (and only) home game in December. And we think they’re going to make it memorable for the fans!

Picks: Miami Dolphins to win and cover the spread.

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers Week 16 Odds, Time, and Prediction

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers Week 16 Odds, Time, and Prediction

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers is a Week 16 duel between two teams that are currently outside the playoff zone. The team from Michigan is in a much better situation than the boys from North Carolina. The Lions are 7-7 on the season with a 42% chance of making the playoffs. If they beat the Panthers on Saturday afternoon, their chance is going to get much better.

Oddsmakers think they’re going to pull it off, but history teaches us to be careful when it comes to Lions at Panthers games. The thing is that the Panthers have won every single duel against the Lions in the 21st century that took place at Bank of America Stadium.

Confidence is Sky High in the Lions Locker Room

After a slow start to the season, the Detroit Lions are now in the race for a playoff spot. Before November, their record was 1-6, but then, they entered a superb run with 6-1. They’re 3-0 since the start of December, beating the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Jets.

Winning these three games is actually a fantastic achievement as all of them have been playing fantastic football in 2022.

The Lions have been amazing in the offense – they score 26.4 PPG (#5 in the NFL). Their defense hasn’t been that great. With 26.0 points conceded per game, they’re the second-worst defense in the league. Still, they seem to be improving – their defensive average over the last three games is 18.0 (9th in the league).

Carolina’s Offense Might Not be Good Enough for Detroit

The Achilles heel of the Detroit Lions is their defense, but they might do well in Week 16. The thing is that the Carolina Panthers just aren’t good in the offense in 2022. They were okay when RB Christian McCaffrey was on the roster, but with him departing for California, their running game doesn’t seem as sharp.

Their offensive game too has been disappointing with QB Sam Darnold putting on mediocre performances at best. Further, the signal-caller just hasn’t been getting enough protection from his teammates, who routinely let him get sacked by the opposition.

All of this has resulted in Carolina’s bleak offensive display throughout the 2022 season. With 19.7 points per game, they have the 24th offense in the NFL.

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers Prediction

Beating the Panthers in Charlotte looks like a mission impossible considering that the Lions haven’t done it since the 1990s. But maybe we’ll see a miracle this weekend. After all, it’s Christmas time.

Picks: Detroit Lions to win and cover the spread; under to hit

The Old Man – Gambling With An Edge

Putting Bills Into a Machine

Today’s column is less technical and more about “how I do things” that aren’t specifically related to video poker.

Most of you have heard of Adele, one of the premier singers of our time. She is performing a series of concerts at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and I was invited to receive two tickets. Bonnie’s daughter, Joyce, is a huge fan, so we arranged for Bonnie and Joyce to attend the concert on December 3, while I played enough in the casino to “keep those offers coming.”

The concert began at 8 p.m. and we arranged to eat at the Bacchanal Buffet beforehand. This buffet costs $80 apiece — and is worth it (and don’t even think about getting in without a reservation on a busy weekend night). Bonnie and I each had $100 celebration dinners that expire January 31, we each get daily $10 food vouchers when we visit any Las Vegas Caesars property (along with four drink vouchers worth up to a $25 drink apiece.) These are called “Laurel Awards” and are basically a replacement for Diamond Lounges, which are not open. Although sometimes I will have a glass of wine with dinner, on this day I still had a lot of play to do. At the end of our evening, we’ll get Fiji water for as many of our drink coupons as we have left. It’s a “waste” to use the vouchers for this, but better than letting them expire unused. (Math majors may notice that two $100 vouchers and two $10 vouchers don’t add up to the $240 the buffet costs. I had plenty of Reward Credits (RCs) to pay for the rest.)

It takes a lot of play to keep the offers coming, especially since I’m playing slots there, not video poker. They do have 9/6 Jacks or Better (earning one RC per $25 coin-in) for $5, $10, and $25 denominations, which definitely isn’t terrible, but when you can find slots in a positive situation (where previous, unknowledgeable, players have left them in such a state), this earns one RC per $5 coin-in and can be better than the 99.54% of this Jacks or Better game. There are some Ultimate X and Ultimate X Bonus Streak games, but those are short plays only and you can’t dependably find enough good ones.

The downside of playing slots is you never know what you’re going to find today and there are other “slot hustlers” who know approximately what you do. And some of the plays are for 60¢, 75¢, or 80¢, so even when it’s a good deal percentagewise, it can take a long time to earn sufficient points. Sometimes, of course, I can find a positive game at $20 or more per play, and at that rate I can earn a sizeable number of RCs per hour. But mostly it’s a mixture of games requiring $4.00 and less.

Playing such games involves a lot of moving around. While sometimes you can find a play that lasts a considerable period of time, often plays are done in five minutes or less. Sometimes much less. So then you have to move along to the next machine to see if it is playable. And then an hour or more later, return to the same machine to see if somebody else has played it enough to make it profitable. On a weekend night, it doesn’t take long for the games to “recycle.”

Back to Bonnie: She is close to 80 years old and uses a walker some of the time. She doesn’t need it for short walks, but there’s enough walking in a large casino that it’s a good idea for her to bring it. Plus, at Caesars we park at Seven Stars valet, so she stops by Seven Stars check-in, shows her card, and asks for four, six, or eight bottles of water. Her walker has a storage area under the seat, so this water is easy to transport. We both drink a lot of water in casinos, and on this night, Joyce was along too.

Bonnie asked me to keep her walker while she went into the concert because there wouldn’t be room at her seat for it. While I’m sure the venue has the capability to store the walker during the performance, we thought it would be easier if I kept it. So I did, as I went from machine to machine checking for opportunities. Caesars is a fairly large property and I made five or so laps around it while the concert was happening.

I had never used Bonnie’s walker before — and it changed my world! I regularly go to the gym, run several miles a week, and can walk pretty fast through a casino, but when I used her walker, I gave off a different vibe totally.

Bonnie is shorter than me, so I had to bend over a bit to use the walker. (The handle-height is adjustable, but it’s finicky to do and fits better in the car when it’s at her height.) People see this bent-over, gray-haired old man using a walker and take it at face value. I didn’t set out to use it as a disguise or a prop, but it quickly became one. People smiled at me and moved over to let me pass. (Caesars Palace on a Saturday night can be a very crowded place — especially between rows of slots or near entrances of restaurants, clubs, or the ballroom.)

You often see people sitting at an unoccupied machine but not playing. They might be waiting for somebody else. They might be charging their cell phone. They might be resting before resuming their night. If I see the game is playable, I politely ask such a person if I can play the machine. Normally I succeed perhaps 60% of the time when I do this. With the walker, I succeeded 90% of the time. (Often, I don’t know whether the machine is playable or not when I ask if I can play. Each machine may have four denominations and five “number of coins” games per denomination. Often the games for one of the denominations are displayed on the front, so I can check those without actually sitting down, but the other denominations are hidden. Fortunately, even when I sit down, spend 30 seconds checking to see if anything is playable, and then leave, nobody has said words to the effect, “Hey! You said you wanted to play, and you didn’t play! Why did you make me stand up!”)

Plus, while I had the walker next to me, in 2½ hours, nine people came over and gave me small TITO tickets. The change machines do not cash out the “cents” part of a ticket and standing in line at the cashier for 42¢ is arguably a waste of time, so people frequently give small tickets away — or leave them on the top of their machine. They would rather a random player receive the money than the “greedy” casino. This particular “greedy” player is always happy to receive such donations and I put it into the machine immediately where it basically disappears into the total number of credits.

One lady apologized for it being only 65¢ (which was actually larger than average for the tickets I was given), never mind that I had more than $800 in credits in the machine when it happened, but I thanked her and told her I was such a good player that with some luck, I was pretty sure I could turn it into 67¢! That response made her day.

I couldn’t depend on getting enough play during the concert (Caesars uses an average daily theoretical calculated by which games you play and how much you play, and the size of your offers are based on that. If your play drops too much, so do your offers.)

So I started my day at Harrah’s, which is part of the Caesars system, and play there counts just as much as play at Caesars itself. I traveled a few laps between Harrah’s, Linq, and Flamingo for about four hours before I drove over to Caesars. Joyce brought Bonnie to Caesars in time for the Bacchanal buffet dinner. While Caesars and Harrah’s are within 15 minutes walking distance, (and almost the same driving time given walking to the car, dealing with traffic, and checking into valet parking at the second hotel), I definitely wanted the car at Caesars at the end of the evening. Bonnie and I would both be tired from the day, it would be a 25-minute walk for Bonnie, and the weather would be in the 40s. She was raised in Montana, but has lived in Vegas for 30 years and doesn’t like walking around in weather that cold.

I could have parked at Paris and played there and at Planet Hollywood (plus at Bally’s which as you read this has been renamed Horseshoe Las Vegas). At the time this happened, the Horseshoe was being remodeled and there were a lot of “Pardon our dust” signs about. They may now have a selection of slots I find more attractive than those they had previously, but with the games they used to have, I liked the mix at Harrah’s/Linq/Flamingo more than the ones at Bally’s/Paris/Planet Hollywood. You can bet, though, that in the near future I’ll check out the Horseshoe and re-evaluate the situation.

While I realize that using a walker on a regular basis would provide me with benefits, I’m not planning on doing it. I’m almost 76 years old and needing to use a walker may well be in my not-too-distant future. I’m still spry enough to not need a walker, so I’ll give up those “benefits.” I believe that most people who use walkers need to do so, have life tougher than I do at the current time, and I don’t want to make their life any tougher. The more people who use walkers who don’t actually need to do so, the more it clogs up the system.

So that’s how I did it on that particular day. Maybe there’s something here that will help you understand how the winning process is done. It’s certainly not just one secret. And if you didn’t learn something new, you can safely bet that next week’s blogpost will be entirely different.
