Top Stories of 2022, #5: New Home, Same Success for WSOP

Top Stories of 2022, #5: New Home, Same Success for WSOP

The World Series of Poker is no stranger from appearing in the annual PokerNews Top Stories series.

In 2021 the return of the live WSOP was our number one story, and the 2020 Online WSOP Main Event also featured prominently in the countdown the previous year.

This year we’re looking back at the success of the 2022 WSOP at its new home on the Las Vegas Strip, speaking with WSOP Vice President Jack Effel to find out what exactly went in to making the move as seamless as possible.

Jack Effel

Interview: Vice President Jack Effel Looks Ahead to 2023 WSOP

Preparations Ahead of the Move

The uniqueness of the WSOP is something that cannot be understated, and the move from the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino to Bally’s — now the Horseshoe — and Paris Las Vegas was a long time coming, according to Effel.

“There’s nothing else like the WSOP out there,” Effel said. “You can’t really compare it to anything else. You had hundreds of tables and tens of thousands of unique people across two different properties — which were both new for everyone — it’s just a lot.”

World Series of Poker Site Bally’s Officially Renamed Horseshoe Las Vegas

Conversations were underway long before news broke of the impending move, and Effel says that the WSOP worked hard to see how the Series would work in the new space and what would need to be done to the existing infrastructure.

“There’s nothing else like the WSOP out there”

“It wasn’t until a few months before the 2021 WSOP that we really started to talk about it seriously,” said Effel. “And then wasn’t until the end of that event that we properly dived into it, which was exciting!

“There were still a lot of unknowns, but we went about things trying to produce the best event possible.

“At the end of the day, it was about setting it up and being prepared. The more prepared we were, the better things run and the better the experience for everyone will be.”

Paris Las Vegas

The Move Itself

Transferring the entire WSOP from one venue to another was a massive project in itself, made more difficult by the fact that there were just six months between Series, instead of the usual ten. Effel says that this six-month stretch was packed with activity.

“Once we got everything moved over, we had to start working on the buildings themselves. We needed to be able to hang lights and secure the surveillance cameras. We bought over a million individual new chips — they literally came in just days before we opened; they all had to be unpacked, inventoried, and stored somewhere.

“I’m not going to sugarcoat things, we had internal things [go wrong]. Things that people may or may not have seen, small technical things. But everyone experiences these, and you just try to make things better for future years.”

Overall, Effel says that the event was an overwhelming success and paid tribute to all the staff involved in ensuring the event ran smoothly.

“The WSOP is full of challenges,” he said. “And the way that you run it successfully is that you address the challenges. When you put that many people — thousands of people every single day, with hundreds of employees — when you do stuff this big, things are going to break. But they didn’t break that much, and the majority of things were pretty smooth.”

Paris Ballroom

2022 WSOP Main Event

After all that preparation, the entire Series went off just about without a hitch, putting up some huge numbers in the process. Almost 200,000 entries in bracelet events alone and almost $350 million in prize money, with the second-biggest Main Event of all time (8,663 players)

Espen Jorstad Wins 2022 World Series of Poker Main Event for $10,000,000

“I mean, there’s there’s nothing like that anywhere,” said Effel. “To be 110 away from the record in this modern-day regulated and legalized environment is a pretty spectacular accomplishment. And I think 2023 is the year that we actually exceed the record for the Main Event”

Espen Jorstad

Favorite Moment of the Summer

We asked Effel for his favorite moment of the summer, and he was quick to point out the success of the inaugural Million Dollar Bounty.

“Having everyone get to push that button and see if they were going to get a treasure chest and win a big prize, they were just some great moments. We know Mystery Bounty tournaments are pretty popular; a little sense of luck and that sense of skill.

Matt Glantz

“We did some cool things this past summer, and that’s why we’ve redefined the event for 2023 and the reason why we’ve moved it to the start to try and highlight the event even more.”

After Matt Glantz’s $1,000,000 win in 2022, next year’s event will see $1,000,000 guaranteed for the winner, and Effel is expecting a big turn out.

“I think it’s gonna be one of the biggest most talked about stories of 2023 — aside from us breaking the Main Event record. I really like the way GG designed the software for everyone to push the button. I think it was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I think we’re gonna do 20,000 entries or maybe more.”

Looking Ahead to 2023

The WSOP isn’t resting on its laurels. The transition to the Horseshoe is complete, and the countdown to WSOP is well underway. Additionally, Effel says that certain issues are already being addressed, whether that’s the air conditioning system, food options, uncomfortable chairs, or ensuring registration remains as uncomplicated as possible.

2023 WSOP Dates Confirmed; Initial Schedule of Events Released

“We always go in with our eyes wide open. We never go in thinking that we know everything, and we always try to make things better. Obviously, you want everything to be perfect, and you hope that it is, 90 plus per cent of the time, but we’re not really graded on all the things that we get right. We’re graded on how we handle the things that go wrong.”

“And every single person that competes – whether it’s a bracelet event, side event or live game – or anyone that’s

Main Event Bracelet

coming to work the event and be part of the WSOP, we want them to have a good experience and we appreciate every single one of them.”

The WPT World Championship Final Table Hand That Has Everyone Talking

WPT Wynn

Hudon the last man standing

When play finally ended in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, talented mixed game specialist Benny Glaser was on the cusp of a prestigious No Limit Hold ‘Em title. Standing between him and the 2022 World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship were five players, four of whom were trying to outlast each other and one of whom was in the seventh circle of ICM Hell.

the kind of spot poker players dream about

It was an enviable position for the man from Southampton, the kind of spot poker players dream about, when you can open liberally, leveraging your chip-lead, handcuffing your opponents, putting them in the bin. He came into that penultimate day with the chip-lead and he wielded it expertly, putting distance between himself and his nearest rival Eliot Hudon.

When the dust settled on the final table, however, it was Hudon who was the last man standing, a superb performance by the Canadian who managed to turn the tables in dramatic fashion right at the start of the final table. He took the lion’s share of the incredible $29m prizepool, walking away with $4.1m.

One world in 80

In a hand that has polarized the professional playing community, Glaser shoved into the field with A-J, applying maximum pre-flop ICM pressure on Hudon who had 48 big blinds right behind him and the rest of the players who were all short:

To go from two of six to out in sixth is the definition of an ICM catastrophe so Hudon is forced to fold all but a couple of premium hands. A-J blocks Aces so, in reality, he only has nine combos with which he is happy to commit. If we factor in some future game considerations, then Queens becomes a tempting proposition but that’s still just 15 hand combinations out of of 1225 possibilities (1.2%)

It just so happened that we ended up living in that one world out of 80 where Hudon found pocket Kings and made the call. He held and the tables were instantly turned with Hudon enjoying the 100 big blind monster stack and Glaser reduced to sub-50 big blinds and forced into a dog fight just to get heads-up.

Two ways to go

With the chips distributed in this way, there are two strategic ways that you as chip-leader can use your advantage. You can shove into the players who, in the pursuit of outlasting each other, can only call with the narrowest of ranges. Alternatively, you can play small-ball, encouraging the players to see flops with you, navigating down the streets, often making them commit chips before dropping the ICM hammer on the turn or river.

nudging your opponents into harder-to-study branches of the game tree

The former approach is ruthless in its efficiency but it gives your opponents a relatively easy decision so long as they are prepped for that possibility. They simply have to have their calling ranges nailed down. The latter approach is more nuanced and devilish, nudging your opponents into harder-to-study branches of the game tree, forcing them into unclear places from where they may make a mistake.

While I am certain that there will be players who disagree, the former approach, while effective and arguably ‘solver-approved,’ is clunkier. This play limits your own decisions in the hand to one and does the same for your tablemates. It negates your post-flop edge if you perceive yourself as having one. It completely removes any physical component which could certainly be relevant on a high profile big money live final table. It is also worth noting that it is not necessarily the solver’s first choice if given a wider range of open sizes (I saw one sim that prefers a 4x open if given the choice between 2x, 4x, 6x, and shove).

The latter approach is a decision to ‘play poker,’ embracing the complicating factors of run-outs and different bet size options you may have at your disposal on later streets. When you have a big chip-lead, you can play a wide variety of hands and your opponents can only play back with a narrower, more predictable range. They might also have to put all their value hands into their bluff range so as to protect their marginal strength holdings. As a consequence, their defensive bluff-catching posture cannot extract value in the same way that you can.

Armchair Quarterbacks

As I arrived to rail the final table, the players were on their way out. It had been a very fast affair, a little over two hours as Hudon made short shrift of his tablemates in pursuit of glory. Glaser’s rail were split when it came to the key hand, some feeling like it was ‘standard’ while others finding it unnecessary.

That same split was in evidence in the comments of onlookers. Matt Hunt defended the play:

Reflecting back on my own satellite study down the years, I suggested one possibly overlooked factor:

Matt Berkey pointed out that we are all just watching from the sidelines, a valid point but i also think it’s okay to respectfully debate the merits and demerits of certain lines, especially when you put skin in the game:

Ultimately, credit must go to Glaser for playing very well after this outlier hand and still reaching heads-up play. When he reflects on the wisdom of his decision to play big-ball poker, the $2.8m will no doubt be a comfort.

Osaka IR May Get Govt Approval Before February

Osaka IR May Get Govt Approval Before February

Japanese media outlets are reporting that the head of the Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Innovation Party) is under the impression that Osaka City’s Integrated Resort (IR) District Development Plan will be approved by Japan’s national government before the end of January. The IR plan includes Japan’s first casino.

An unnamed member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the party in power, is reported to have discussed this possibility with the leadership of the Japan Innovation Party.

As reported in Japanese media and other Asian outlets, MP Nobuyuki Baba said: “Top people of the party have worked on the government and LDP. The party now has come to think that the government would give a decision, which should be positive for Osaka, before the Diet session starts,” MP Baba was quoted as saying late last week.

The next session of the parliament is expected to start in January, having recently concluded an extra session earlier in December.

Leaders Say Time to Act on Osaka Casino

In April the IR plan was submitted to the national government and several politicians including Baba have been urging action on the proposal.

The path to an integrated resort and casino in Japan has been a decades-long quest with only the last several years seeing appreciable progress. The late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was seen to champion the cause.

The full complex, which would include a gambling center operated by MGM Resorts International, is expected to cost some US$8.1 billion to complete based on today’s exchange rates which remain relatively stable.

Integrated Resort to be Built on Reclaimed Island in Bay

The resort is planned to be built on Yumeshima island in Osaka Bay. The location has raised some environmental and other concerns with national leaders who have asked local authorities to weigh in on how those concerns would be addressed.

The artificial island is slated for further construction and local authorities in Osaka have opened a public consultation on the issue that is expected to be open for several months.

Indications are that the resort would not open much before 2030. According to a report by GGRAsia, the current governor of Osaka prefecture recently announced he would run for reelection, and part of his platform would be to “implement a growth strategy in tandem with Osaka city”. The integrated resort and casino project and the upcoming Expo 2025 slated for the island are expected to be the main planks of the growth platform.

Man Wins Over $2m After Buying Six Lottery Tickets With the Same Numbers for the Same Draw

Person choosing lottery numbers

A lucky feeling

A US war veteran has won over $2m by using his “intuition” to claim the main prize six times in the same lottery draw. Raymond Roberts Sr. won by using the same lottery numbers on each of his tickets.

won the money by playing the multi-state “Lucky for Life” lottery game

The Massachusetts resident explained that he had a lucky feeling about the numbers as they had links to dates that were special to him, such as birthdays and anniversaries. The Massachusetts State Lottery issued a press release about this phenomenal story, detailing that Roberts won the money by playing the multi-state “Lucky for Life” lottery game.

Breaking down the rewards

Roberts bought six tickets for the draw on December 14, matching the first five numbers on each. Roberts ultimately decided to accept a lump sum for five of the tickets. This works out as a $390,000 payment per ticket, totaling $1.95m across the five tickets. For the other ticket, he will receive $25,000 a year before taxes for the rest of his life or 20 years, whichever is longer.

has been using the same lottery numbers for over two decades

Roberts bought the winning tickets at a liquor store in Fall River; he has been using the same lottery numbers for over two decades. It is the first time that he has had significant success in a lottery draw. The owner of the liquor store also benefits – for each of the six winning tickets, the storeowner gets a $5,000 bonus.

A good year for lottery winners

When asked about what he plans to do with the winnings, Roberts said that he first wants to purchase a new motorbike. Then he’ll have a think as to what he will spend the rest of the money on.

Each Lucky for Life play costs $2. The ticket buyer chooses five numbers that between 1 and 48 and one lucky ball number between 1 and 18. Roberts hit the first five numbers and missed the lucky ball.

Roberts isn’t the only interesting lottery winner this year. In November, a 70-year-old woman in Delaware won prizes totaling $400,000 from back-to-back scratch cards. Also last month, a person in California won the $2bn Powerball jackpot, the biggest payout in the history of US lotteries.

The second biggest jackpot winner in the history of the Bavarian jackpot was also a happy guest at the Bad Fussing casino.

Table Games and Poker Tournaments

The casino reserves the second floor for table games. The options include American Roulette, blackjack, and Dice 52. The Best Online Casinos in Bavaria

Gambling at land-based casinos is so much different than playing online. Both methods have great benefits but offer a different overall experience. Casino Bad Fussing has no online version, at least for now. Yet, there are many other safe online casinos in Bavaria. Choose the one that fits your gambling personality most. The list below features some of the leading online casino platforms in the German market.

Of course, all our recommended online casinos are tested and 100% safe to play at. Online casinos have one key advantage, and that is convenience. You can play from the comfort of your couch, but that just means you must be extra careful. Before you click deposit, double-check if the casino has a gambling licence. Keep in mind that the gambling age at Bavarian land-based casinos is 21, but online casinos sometimes accept players aged 18 and above.

Conclusion – A Great Land-Based Casino in Bavaria

The Casino of Bad Fussing is a pretty good gambling destination. It’s located in a beautiful spa town with lots of health and art events to choose from. Top Stories of 2022, #6: Everything’s Bigger in Texas – Especially Poker!

Top Stories of 2022, #6: Everything's Bigger in Texas - Especially Poker!

To say it’s been a roller coaster year full of ups and downs for poker in Texas would be quite an understatement.

In our sixth top story of 2022, we take a look back at the past 365 days of the good and bad that transpired across the Lone Star State in relation to poker. Being that we’re glass-half-full kind of people, we’ll kick it off with a little Phil Hellmuth positivity, even though we aren’t even sure if the “Poker Brat’s” ever played cards in Texas.

Polk, Neeme, Owen Purchase The Lodge

polk neeme owen lodge

Right after the New Year, Doug Polk made headlines when he, along with vloggers Andrew Neeme and Brad Owen, announced they had teamed up together to purchase The Lodge Card Club in Round Rock, a suburb of Austin.

The Lodge was already a popular poker club in the state and one of the biggest in the country. But Polk had even bigger plans for the business, which included improving the quality of the Poker at the Lodge stream and adding even more tables (now 82 tables).

Polk, who moved to Austin in 2021, isn’t just an investor who never appears at The Lodge “Mahal,” In fact, he’s one of the regular players in the poker club and often appears on the livestream. Neeme and Owen are also as active as they can be while living in Las Vegas, but they heavily promote the room and also come to town occasionally to compete on Poker at the Lodge.

In now almost exactly one year as co-owners, the trio has made The Lodge more recognized outside of Texas, which has helped bring in players from other states. As a result, the room hosted many huge events in 2022, none larger than the Lodge Championship Series in May, live reported by PokerNews.

PokerNews Embarks on Texas Poker Road Trip

Doyle Brunson’s hometown.

In March, PokerNews’ Chad Holloway, Jesse Fullen, and Jon Sofen wanted to find out for themselves exactly what the Texas poker hype was all about. So, they took a six-day road trip across the state, visiting more than 20 card rooms in the big cities (Dallas, Austin, and Houston), along with rooms in smaller towns such as Odessa.

In between the poker room visits, they also made time to take in some poker history, visiting the gravesites of Johnny Moss and Jack Strauss, and stopping by Longworth, the hometown of the great Doyle Brunson.

What the crew discovered on their journey was that Texans love poker as much as anywhere. They’re passionate about the game and pack the dozens of poker clubs across the state. Not only that, but the owners of these fine establishments were welcoming and passionate about poker.

It seems like there are new rooms in Texas popping up every other month. There are places to play poker in just about every town of any measurable population these days.

Texas Card House Dallas Fights Never-Ending Legal Battle

texas card house dallas

While poker is booming in the Lone Star State, there is one issue — nobody really knows if it’s legal. Some say the law — Texas Penal Code 47.04 — permits poker businesses to operate as social clubs, charging membership and seat fees in place of rake. But others disagree with the interpretation of the law.

As such, authorities and lawmakers in multiple cities have either forced the closure of certain card rooms or attempted to do so. None of these cases has been more prominent than at Texas Card House Dallas, one of the top poker rooms in the entire state.

In January, the city of Dallas revoked the card room’s Certificate of Occupancy, the beginning of what will become a lengthy legal battle. A few months later, the city’s Board of Adjustment (BOA) voted to reinstate the COO, which caused a Dallas inspection official to sue the BOA and claims they stepped outside their boundaries in overturning the COO revocation.

The judge in November ruled in favor of the building inspector, leaving TCH Dallas in limbo, although the card room remains in operation. Texas Card House CEO Ryan Crow Dallas told PokerNews he anticipates this case will eventually end up in the Texas Supreme Court and that it could impact the legality of poker across the state.

Shootings at Legends Poker Room

legends poker room houston

One Houston area poker room that has made headlines for all the wrong reasons — Legends Poker Room — is also one of the busiest and most popular in town. And that’s a bit of a problem.

Legends has some of the juiciest cash games, which brings in players. But there are safety concerns with playing in this Texas card room. Over the past year, shootings in the parking lot have occurred on multiple occasions. Not every time has the incident been related to the poker room, but it does bring into question safety issues when playing there regardless.

In January, a heroic security guard at Legends stopped an armed robbery, but bullets flew inside the building. Fortunately, no one was injured and the culprit was taken into custody.

Three months later and an even scarier situation occurred when bullets from outside Legends began spraying into the poker room. Once again, no one was hit, thankfully, but the incident still caused panic. Still, the room continues to draw in customers thanks to the juicy games.

Interview: Vice President Jack Effel Looks Ahead to 2023 WSOP

Interview: Vice President Jack Effel Looks Ahead to 2023 WSOP

For Jack Effel, the return of the World Series of Poker to the Horseshoe is personal. And as a special Christmas present to PokerNews readers, we spoke to Effel about how plans for the 2023 WSOP were shaping up.

“It kind of makes my career complete,” Effel told PokerNews. “Obviously the rebrand is a cool thing, but I started out at the Horseshoe and I’ve ended up at the Horseshoe.”

Having started his career in 1997 as a Poker Room Shift Manager at the Horseshoe, he returns over 25 years later as Vice President of the World Series of Poker, and one of the most recognizable faces in the industry.

“Obviously, Caesars is a massive company withmany resorts all over the world, but it’s great to see the World Series of Poker back in its home. The WSOP and the Horseshoe have over 50 years of shared history together, and that’s before you factor in the 70 years of history the Horseshoe has going back to 1951.”

Preparing for Life at the Horseshoe

Behind the scenes, work continues to be done to prepare for the WSOP’s return to the Strip for only the second time in its history, all being done alongside the rebrand of Bally’s to the Horseshoe.

“Just the feel of being back at the Horseshoe and connecting that with World Series of Poker is a great thing.”

“There are various projects going on around the property just to make it look more Horseshoe-esque,” says Effel. “Everyone involved in the World Series of Poker, we sort of care about it like it’s our baby.

“We’re just shepherds trying to carry the event forward, and at some point turning it over to someone else. It’s a very special thing and we love what we do.

The original Horseshoe Club was opened by Benny Binion in downtown Las Vegas in 1951. Later, his son Jack would found the World Series of Poker at the venue in 1970. The Horseshoe hosted the WSOP until its eventual move to the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino in 2005.

“The Horseshoe and World Series of Poker being together is a great sentimental thing but a historical thing as well, and it’s a bright thing for us and our brand. Just the feel of being back at the Horseshoe and connecting that with World Series of Poker is a great thing.”

Hall of Fame Poker Room to be “Best in Vegas”

Last month as part of the rebranding, the brand new Hall of Fame Poker Room was opened, something Effel believes will be one of the best poker rooms in Vegas.

“The room itself is beautiful and it’s a really neat experience. There are other elements that we’re still designing now that are going to roll out. It’ll be a place you can come year-round and see the Poker Hall of Fame and the WSOP Gallery of Champions with all the past Main Event winners.

“When you think about the rich history that the World Series of Poker and the Horseshoe have together, this room is something special. And we think it’s going to be one of the great rooms moving forward here in town and I’m excited about its future.”

Breaking Down the 2023 WSOP Schedule

This year the WSOP took the decision to release a highlights schedule in December in order for players to start planning their trips around the “weekend-anchoring” events like the Millionaire Maker, Monster Stack and brand new Gladiators of Poker event.

Effel said he’d sought counsel from numerous poker players, in order to have their views represented in the 2023 WSOP schedule.

“We want to make sure we have some exciting new events and create the best series of poker events in the world — as we always do! Every week there’s something big and we know the Ladies and Seniors Championships are pretty important events for people planning their once-a-year trip, so that’s why we released the dates early.”

One event that stood out from the schedule highlights already released is the Gladiators of Poker that comes with a $3,000,000 guarantee. The $300 buy-in makes it the lowest in-person Las Vegas WSOP bracelet event in history, something Effel believes will lead to bumper — even record-breaking — turnout.

“I think for $300 it’ll produce the biggest prize pool that’s ever happened at that buy-in level.”

“We’re expecting Gladiators of Poker to be one of the largest participatory events we’ve ever had. I can see a lot of people having access to a bracelet that may not have had access to a bracelet in the past. Plus it allows for fast transactions — just three $100 bills. We think that’s important to people. People don’t want to wait in line so we want to make it as quick and painless as possible.

“You’re going to see the full spectrum of poker players in this event — from the smallest player to the largest player playing in that tournament. For $300 it’ll probably produce the biggest prize pool that’s ever happened at that buy-in level.”

8 WSOP Rules You Didn’t Know Existed!

As for any more surprises, poker fans will have to wait until 2023 for the release of the full schedule to see any other new events, but Effel said that it’ll have something for everyone.

“There are gonna be a couple other events that are going to be at the end, but you’ll have to wait and see the full schedule when it comes out. When you finally see the schedule you’ll see that there’s something you can play every day no matter the buy-in or what your bankroll is.”

Jack Effel

2023 WSOP Main Event

Then of course we come to the WSOP Main Event. Last year saw a change to the schedule in order to accommodate the second-largest Main Event field in history, but the 2023 schedule sticks with four flights from July 3-6, something Effel says is the right decision.

“Every year is a little bit different. We’ve been trying to keep the Main Event closer to the July 4 holiday, as it’s a time when people can get off from work and it’s when a lot of people take their vacations, so it makes a lot of sense to have the starting day around the holiday.

“Players have the four flights, plus you can still get in on either of the Day 2s on July 7 or 8 for two levels.”

Rail

Effel believes that the quality of events and getting to experience the WSOP atmosphere makes it a truly special time of year for the poker world.

“The WSOP is the place to be. We want you to have not only a great experience but we want you to have quality events to compete in. It’s a special time every single year for everyone in the world to get together and play poker.

“We want you to win as many bracelets as you can, and we want you to have lots of opportunities to be able to really enjoy your poker trip, whether you’re playing one event or the full schedule.”

WSOP Stories

Not a year goes by without the WSOP throwing up some special stories. From David Jackson defeating Phil Hellmuth heads-up to Dan Cates doing the unthinkable and clinching back-to-back Poker Players Championships, Effel said that it’s hard to replicate the WSOP experience anywhere else as a result.

“Everyone’s talking, everyone’s watching – it’s something you can’t replicate no matter where you go”

“The stories that come out of the WSOP are a little different to everywhere else. I know everyone wants that WSOP experience everywhere that they go, it’s just really hard to replicate it because of all the resources we have during the WSOP.

“With so many people watching, it’s great to hear all the stories from the tables, about the winners and everything. Every year we get excited about it, every year we can’t wait to see who’s going to win the events, who’s going to win the Main Event, and what other cool stories are going to happen. Everyone’s talking, everyone’s watching – it’s something you can’t replicate no matter where you go.”

Improving Ahead of 2023

Although the first year in its new home was an undoubted success, Effel says the WSOP has learned lessons to improve the experience for 2023, such as tweaking the way tournaments operate spread across two venues. Whereas in 2022 the majority of tournaments started in Paris, in 2023 more players will start on the Horseshoe side this year, and then spread out into Paris.

“Nothing too drastic, but we want to change the flow a little bit. What will happen there is there’ll be fewer times that people will have to move which will create a better experience obviously. On days of mass capacity, you’ll be wherever you’re going to be in the scheme of things.”

Paris Ballroom

More efforts are being put in to make people — both players and staff — more comfortable. From new carpet to fixed AC, to brand new fiber-optic internet to speed up registration.

“We want everyone to be comfortable. We want everyone to know where they need to go. We want everyone to be serviced expeditiously. And you know, we want to have great events run by competent, talented people. We have a lot of those at the World Series of Poker. And we continue to train up the next generation of folks to make sure that that wheel keeps spinning and keeps producing high-quality talent.

Bally's Ballroom

“We still have to remember that this is a temporary event; people come out and work for seven weeks. So we want to make sure we can fill the roster with good, talented people. And we can train them up and continue to increase the service levels.

“So we’re improving in all those different areas. There are big challenges like a massive event like the World Series of Poker, and while I’ll be the first to say it’s not perfect, we strive for perfection every year.”

How Much Money Players at 2022 WSOP Main Event Final Table Really Made

After all this time working around the WSOP, Effel says he still gets goosebumps once cards are in the air, and the sound of chips shuffling fills the air.

“It’s very special to all of us,” he said. “It’s exciting because it’s the fruit of our labor, but it’s also the moment everyone’s been waiting for all year long.

“And while there are lots of poker tournaments around the world – I mean, you can go and sit down and play at a poker tournament every single day these days – players will always know that when they sit down at the WSOP it’s something extra special.”

Bally’s Will Build Only Casino In America’s Third Largest City

Bally’s Will Build Only Casino In America’s Third Largest City

As New York struggles with competing interests for three Las Vegas-style casinos downstate, with proposals running the gamut from Times Square to Coney Island, Bally’s has nearly crossed the finish line for the first-ever true casino in America’s third-largest city,

According to Bally’s Corp. Chairman Soo Kim, the success of the company’s Chicago casino project – a historical milestone itself – is paramount to the future success of the iconic brand’s current strategic goals.

Kim’s hedge fund, Standard General, acquired a 22% stake in Rhode Island lottery terminal and table gaming casino concern Twin River Worldwide Holdings Inc. prior to buying the Bally name from Caesars in 2020.

According to Bloomberg reports, Kim says that a successful launch of the only true casino in the history of America’s third-largest city will be the most important thing the nascent company with a storied brand name will do to date, bar none.

Iconic Brand to Become Household Name

“[This] will be our most important, period,” Kim said regarding the success of the company’s overall strategy. “It’s really an opportunity to re-announce and reintroduce the Bally’s brand name nationally and what better place than Chicago.

The Bally brand dates back to the late 1930s. The “juice” in the name has assisted the once unheard-of “Twin Rivers” company in a quest that so far has seen it become an operator of gambling properties in 20% of all American states with over a dozen operations across the country.

The Chicago casino has knocked down domino after domino and now only needs approval from state regulators to ready a temporary casino and soon open a historical landmark in gambling history. Steve Wynn couldn’t do it – Sheldon Adelson couldn’t do it, and certainly, Donald Trump couldn’t have done it even if it were on his radar when he controlled three casinos in Atlantic City.

Timing is everything

The American commercial gambling industry has simply exploded online and on land as pent-up consumer energy is released after too much time at home, and sports betting has become commonplace and officially legal and regulated in most states. America has gambling fever as the economy defies traditional logic and players bet like there is no economic downturn in their real worlds.

Land-based gambling is no longer relegated to the meccas of Las Vegas and Atlantic City or the Gulf coast, let alone riverboat casinos or backroom gambling halls. The gates have opened for better or worse and, as Kim said, “The next great frontier are large cities,” according to a story seen on Crain’s Chicago Business.

Not all observers have absolute confidence in the smart business acumen of Kim translating into the wherewithal needed to accomplish what other well-experienced titans of the industry had the opportunity to do but chose not to attempt – Bally’s Corp has simply never executed a project of this magnitude in the physical world. Kim has, however, done far more impressive things with money in another realm – and sometimes, with the right actors who know how to leverage power and delegate authority to competent cohorts, anything is possible.

Almost anyone can imagine a nearly one million square foot casino floor with exhibit space along the Chicago River, an entertainment center worthy of its environs, restaurants to please all visitors, and a hotel with all the amenities needed to serve welcome guests – or could they?

Whether timing is everything or not might be open to interpretation, but striking while the iron is hot after negotiating a perfect position to hold the blacksmith hammer is not as contentious a proposition.

Too Hard to Handle

Mega Casino operators such as Las Vegas Sands and MGM Resorts chose not to bid on the tender out of concerns over market sustainability and tax rates. As they shifted their focus to other markets like Atlanta and NYC, the Illinois General Assembly dropped the preposterous anticipated tax rate of 70% to a much more manageable 40% after Mayor Lori Lightfoot requested the move to keep the possible tender alive.

Still, the potential for failure is real with over 17,000 video gambling terminals beckoning to gamblers in the region and nearly a dozen other venues in the state and nearby Indiana.

The state gambling commission notes that gambling revenues in the state have not recovered from pandemic lows and a trend toward less gambling has existed for nearly a decade in the state. Observers also log the increased interest in sports betting and online casinos as threats to the venue’s potential success.

Overall, most of the gambling revenue in the state comes from the state lottery.

Kim doesn’t seem too worried about the competition and he’s not a businessman accustomed to failure.

It would absolutely be our most complex challenge,” Kim said. “We feel more than confident.”

More than 30 million tourists visited Chicago in 2021 and the city is home to nearly 3 million residents placing it just behind Los Angeles and New York City for the size of the population in the city proper.

Bally’s revenues are expected to provide $200 million a year for first responder pensions which are currently underfunded.

The casino will be built on land that formerly held the Chicago Tribune Publishing Center. Final approval by the Illinois Gaming Board is pending. The permanent casino could open in 2026 with a temporary site opening as soon as during the next calendar year.

Guide To The NFL Playoffs – Reseed, Wild Cards, Schedule & More

Beginner’s Guide To Understanding The NFL Playoffs

After a grueling regular season, the men get separated from the boys, and it’s time to get down to the real business. That’s right, we’re talking about the NFL Playoffs.

It’s the goal of every NFL franchise, but only a select few make it to the Playoffs each year, where they fight it out for the right to play in the greatest show in US sports, the Super Bowl.

But how exactly does it all work?

Here we’ll cover everything you need to know about the NFL Playoffs, from the schedule and how it works to reseeding and wild cards.

How Does The NFL Season Work?

The NFL is split into two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).

Each conference has 16 teams, making a total of 32 teams in the whole NFL.

Each team plays 17 times across an 18-week period, typically starting in early September and ending in late December or early January.

After each team has played all their regular season matches, the 14 best teams battle it out to try and win the Super Bowl, the NFL’s overall championship game.

Divisions and Scheduling

The two NFL conferences are also split into divisions of four teams. These divisions are based on geography and historical rivalry from the pre-NFL era.

The AFC is made up of the following divisions:

North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers.

South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans.

East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets.

West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers.

The NFC is made up of the following divisions:

North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings.

South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

East: Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders.

West: Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks.

The NFL scheduling formula means that teams have a slightly different set of fixtures every year. They always play their divisional rivals twice, but the rest of their schedule is changeable.

The formula is as follows:

  • Each NFL team has to play the other three teams in its division twice, once at home and once on the road.
  • Each team plays one game against the four teams in another predetermined division within its own conference (which is rotated every three years). Two games at home and two on the road.
  • Each team plays one game against every team from the remaining two divisions in its conference that finished in a similar position in their divisional standings in the previous season. One game at home, one on the road.
  • Each team plays one game against all four teams from a predetermined division (which is rotated every four years) in the other conference. Two games at home and two on the road.
  • Each team also plays one game against another team from a predetermined division (which is rotated every four years) in the other conference that finished in a similar position in the final divisional standings in the previous season.

How The NFL Playoffs work

Played since 1932, the NFL Playoffs are a knockout tournament.

So, if you lose, you go home and it’s back to the drawing board again next season. If you win, you’re one step closer to glory.

Seven teams from each conference fight it out in the Playoffs, with one team from the AFC and one from the NFC competing in the Super Bowl.

The Playoffs only feature the best teams (and usually the best players) in each season, so those golden weeks in the dead of winter provide white-hot entertainment for NFL fans across the globe.

The Playoffs can create unique matchups where even the biggest underdog has a chance.

When Do The NFL Regular Season And Playoffs Take Place?

The NFL regular season begins the weekend after the first Monday of September (Labor Day) and ends in early January.

The Playoffs take place across four weekends from January into February every season. The Super Bowl traditionally always took place on the first Sunday in February.

However, 2020 was the final Super Bowl played on the first Sunday in February for the foreseeable future due to the NFL’s new 17-game schedule.

Super Bowl LVI (2021) was played on the second Sunday in February, and Super Bowl LVII (2022) will follow suit.

Qualification And Seeding

14 teams qualify for the NFL Playoffs. This includes the four divisional champions and three wild cards from each conference.

The four teams with the best record in each conference (NFC and AFC) are seeded one through four. The team with the best record is seeded one, the second-best record is seeded two, and so on.

The two teams with the best record in each conference are then given a bye week (they don’t have to play) in the first round of the Playoffs, which is also known as ‘wild card weekend.’

Teams qualify for the Playoffs as ‘wild cards’ if they have one of the three best overall records (number of wins, losses, and ties) of all remaining teams in their conference.

The wild card teams are seeded numbers five, six, and seven based on their records.

Wild Cards Explained

‘Wild card’ Playoff teams were first introduced to the NFL in 1970, when the modern league was founded, following a merger of the National Football League and the American Football League.

Wild card teams are the three teams with the best records in each conference who do not win their division.

These teams always play on wild card weekend, the week before the divisional Playoffs.

The four division winners in each conference are seeded one to four based on their record, with the #1 seed getting a bye in the first round.

Each wild card team plays one of the divisional winners based on their rankings going into the Playoffs.

Each conference is split as follows:

Division Winner #1 – BYE

Division Winner #2 vs Wild Card #7

Division Winner #3 vs Wild Card #6

Division Winner #4 vs Wild Card #5

So, the better your regular season record, the more favorable your draw is in the Playoffs.

Reseeding In The NFL Playoffs

Throughout the Playoffs, the lowest-seeded team always plays against the highest-seeded team in each round.

The higher-seeded team always plays at home too. So, who you play against and where is always subject to change. This is known as reseeding.

Reseeding is designed to give a significant advantage to the teams with the best regular-season records.

It also makes it difficult, but not impossible, for wild card teams to make it to the Super Bowl.

Reseeding often impacts the Playoffs and changes the picture for all the teams involved.

For example, both number one ranked teams in the 2022 Playoffs lost in the divisional round.

This meant the number two ranked teams now became number one and had the massive advantage of playing at home in all the rounds before the Super Bowl.

NFL Playoff Bracket

The Playoff ‘bracket’ is the Playoff schedule as it stands at the present time.

The bracket is subject to change depending on the regular season and Playoff results.

Eager fans start thinking about the Playoff bracket and what it might mean for their team’s ambitions as the season nears a close.

2023 Playoff Schedule

Key dates for the 2022 NFL Playoffs are:

First round: January 14-16

Divisional round: January 22-22

Conference round: January 29

Super Bowl LVI: February 12

The Super Bowl will be played at State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals.
