Top Stories of 2022, #3: Poker Cheating Scandals Everywhere

Top Stories of 2022, #3: Poker Cheating Scandals Everywhere

There’s no way around it, 2022 was a great year for poker. Whether looking at the World Series of Poker’s (WSOP) seamless transition to a new venue or the World Poker Tour’s (WPT) record-breaking World Championship, poker had no shortage of success stories the past 12 months.

But there was a dark side to 2022 that included a handful of poker’s most prominent and successful players being accused of cheating. Those players later showed up to various poker stops, including the WSOP, as if nothing happened, prompting some poker brands to take action.

This year’s various poker scandals make for PokerNews’ third biggest story of 2022.

Ali, Jake & RTA

It all started with a tweet from Alex Foxen. On April 17, Foxen accused 2021 Global Poker Index Player of the Year Ali Imsirovic of cheating in online poker games using real-time assistance (RTA) and further claimed to have “witnessed numerous chip dumps to horses, and many suspicious changes in play from people known to be his horses when deep in online MTTs.”

“Ali is known as a cheater to almost all in the high roller community, however without much ironclad proof, most stay silent,” Foxen wrote.

Foxen’s tweet prompted others to break their silence and back up the high-stakes pro’s allegations. Chance Kornuth wrote that he’s had “multiple sources” tell him there are hundreds of players on GGPoker’s banned list, “but the only two that I personally know for sure are Jake Schindler and Ali Imsirovic.”

The Chip Leader Coaching founder joined Foxen in calling for poker sites to blacklist those who are accused of cheating, while other big names like all-time money leader Justin Bonomo and WSOP Main Event champ Ryan Riess also weighed in.

Those who notably didn’t weigh in were Schindler and Imsirovic, who eight months later have yet to publicly address the momentous and reputation-tarring accusations against them.

Bryn Kenney’s Frog Cult

Just days after the explosive accusations against Schindler and Imsirovic, another prominent player was accused of online cheating. On April 21, Martin Zamani claimed Kenney, the then-all-time money leader, ran an online poker cheating operation on GGPoker that involved collusion in satellites, ghosting and RTA.

The accusations against Kenney delved into madness. Allegedly, Kenney required his horses to adhere to an alternative health lifestyle, notoriously reprimanding a player for eating Taco Bell and, more bizarrely, sending Zamani to a shaman who attempted to perform a ritual that involved placing frog poison on an open wound.

“She talks to me for a little, and she goes, ‘I was the warlord’s wife, I’m a killer, I’m a thief, I’m a liar, but I tell you these things straight to your face,” Zamani told Doug Polk during a podcast interview. “We talk about stuff and she goes, ‘I think you need to cleanse yourself. We’re gonna do the Kambo, it’s called Kambo, it cleanses you, it’s good for you, it’s a little violent. She takes incense to your skin and it blisters up. She then cuts off the blister with a knife so your pores are open and then she takes the poison from the frog and puts it on you.”

Bryn Kenney

Unlike Schindler and Imsirovic, Kenney did address the cheating allegations against him. On April 26, Kenney joined PokerNewsSarah Herring for a 70-minute interview where he denied cheating and downplayed Zamani’s credibility, calling him “a person that, through our conversations, has never been really happy in his life.”

Throughout the more than hour-long conversation, Kenney routinely dodged questions and many of his responses weren’t substantial to the cheating allegations. Much of the poker community was unsatisfied and unconvinced by Kenney’s answers and some listeners were critical of the interview itself.

PokerNews later obtained and verified Telegram text messages between Kenney and one of his horses, George Wolff, that indicate Kenney allegedly had knowledge, and at times encouraged, ghosting and multi-accounting amongst his stable.

In September, Kenney appeared on Joey Ingram’s Poker Life Podcast to address the allegations for a second time, and once again poker players and fans weren’t happy with Kenney’s dodges and denials.

Cheaters Prominent at WSOP

Those who thought being accused of cheating by their peers would’ve kept Kenney, Schindler and Imsirovic away from the WSOP were mistaken. It was business as usual for the trio as the summer rolled around and, to the ire of the poker community, they played a packed World Series schedule.

The three headphone-wearing elephants in the Bally’s ballroom became impossible to ignore. On June 8, Schindler took down Event #12: $50,000 High Roller for his first bracelet and $1.3 million and to jump to the front of the series leaderboard. Kenney ended Day 2d of the Main Event fifth in chips and Schindler and Imsirovic also made deep runs.

Aside from the occasional jab or combative comment at the table, the three accused cheaters went largely unaffected throughout the summer. Poker players became incensed; some criticized poker media for covering and giving attention to them, while others called on poker venues to initiate bans.

Poker Operators Take Action

As the cheating allegations came to light and pressure mounted on poker operators to take action, GGPoker, which previously banned dozens of accounts in an effort to combat RTA, formed a Poker Integrity Council (PIC) to further stop cheating.

The council includes GGPoker’s Jason Koon and Fedor Holz, as well as Andrew “LuckyChewy” Lichtenberger (LearnWPT), Seth Davies (Run it Once) and Nick Petrangelo (Upswing Poker).

Koon, who GGPoker hired in 2021 to serve as an integrity ambassador, called the council “another massive step in ensuring online poker is safe for all players.”

Jason Koon

“Our long list of allies also means that the wider community will be better protected via the industry-wide blacklist; we’re sending a united message that there’s no place in this game for cheaters,” Koon said in July.

Two months later, PokerGO announced that Schindler and Imsirovic — the 2021 PokerGO Tour Player of the Year — had been suspended for the rest of the 2022 PGT season, “upon which time a review will take place.”

It is unclear whether PokerGO will extend the ban or if Imsirovic and Schindler will reemerge at live events in 2023.

Other Controversies

There were a few other controversies and scandals in the poker world in 2022 that deserve mentioning.

Ian O’Hara Accused Of Six-Figure Scam: In October, Kane Kalas and Jonathan Jaffee accused Ian O’Hara of scamming them out of six figures and pocketing thousands of dollars that was supposed to pay for tournament entries. Both players were staking O’Hara and discovered he had been “reporting losses that were later verified to be wins” and “fabricating data on the stake, in order to finance his lifestyle.” O’Hara did not deny the accusations and tweeted that he would “do everything in my power to rectify the situation as much as possible.”

Main Event Swap Dispute: Just a few weeks after he won the WSOP Main Event for $10 million, Espen Jorstad took to social media to preemptively address a swap dispute between himself and Alex “Pwndidi” Theologis, who claimed he had at some point exchanged 3% of the Main Event with the eventual champion. Jorstad said he had no memory of a swap taking place and went public after being threatened by someone “telling me to pay Alex his 3%.” The poker community overwhelmingly backed Jorstad in the dispute and Theologis accepted that Jorstad did not believe a swap took place.

Canceled Guarantees: California’s Hustler Casino drew fire in August when it abruptly canceled its $250,000 guaranteed Larry Flynt’s Grand Slam of Poker Memorial Tournament mid-event “due to unexpected circumstances.” Hustler later made things right by issuing a full refund for registered players and letting the Day 2 qualifiers play for a freeroll prize pool. A month later, the Venetian pulled the plug on $1.1 million in promised guarantees in the PokerGO Stairway to Millions series.

Of course, there was also the infamous jack-four hand on Hustler Casino Live that was arguably the biggest controversy of them all, but that’s a story that will have to wait for a later article.

MP Wants Scotland’s Last Greyhound Racing Track Banned Amid Ireland, UK Pressures

greyhound

Last active track targeted

A Scottish Green member of parliament has upped the ante in his well–backed campaign against greyhound racing by calling for a ban on the only track in Scotland where racing still takes place.

seeking the ban on Thornton Greyhound Stadium

Glasgow’s Daily Record reported Tuesday that Mid Scotland and Fife member of Scottish parliament (MSP) Mark Ruskell is seeking the ban on Thornton Greyhound Stadium in Fife, which hosts its next race meet on January 4 or 7, weather permitting.

Ruskell spoke ahead of an imminent report on greyhound racing by the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission (SAWC). The SAWC’s report will go before MSPs on Holyrood’s Rural Affairs, Islands and Natural Environment Committee by the end of February 2023.

Ruskell said he was looking forward to the findings of SAWC, adding that while not wanting to prejudge the report, he found it clear that “the time has come, at long, long last — to end this cruel and exploitative activity once and for all.”

Ruskell’s move follows similar recent pressure on greyhound racing in Ireland and the UK.

Sport under fire

In September, three of the UK’s most high-profile animal welfare charities, including the RSPCA, launched a campaign calling for greyhound racing to be banned.

In November, spokesperson for Ireland’s ministry of Agriculture, Disability & Social Justice, Holly Cairns, railed against greyhound racing in Ireland while addressing members of the House. Cairns expressed her incredulity that most of Ireland’s political parties supported the sport, in an address she shared via Twitter:

Cairns said that the sport was “in terminal decline” in Ireland and worldwide, and that it has “been banned in most [US] states.”

She added greyhound racing is “a cruel industry that has no place in modern society.”

a barbaric, gambling led sport”

Ruskell’s comments cited on Tuesday echoed those of Cairns. “Greyhound racing is and always has been a barbaric, gambling led sport that leaves dogs facing cruel and unnecessary risk, and even death,” said the MSP.

Owner hits back

According to the Record, the owner of Scotland’s last greyhound racing track, Paul Brignal, said it was “utterly ludicrous […] the Scottish government were being being told that we are the epicentre of cruelty against dogs in Scotland and must be shut down.”

once we’re gone there will be nothing”

“We have people coming from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayr, Dundee, all over. But once we’re gone there will be nothing. That is lamentable because the dogs that race here are well looked after and they love their sport.”

Brignal also refuted Scotland Against Greyhound Exploitation (SAGE)’s assertion that there are 18,000 injured dogs and 3,000 deaths, stating “we only have around 70 dogs left in racing.”

Fontainebleau Las Vegas Secured $2.2B to Ensure Project Completion

Fontainebleau Las Vegas Secured $2.2B to Ensure Project Completion

A long-delayed casino resort slated to appear on the Las Vegas Strip is set to finally complete construction work after securing a $2.2 billion loan from a group of banks and other investors.

Testament of Dedication

Fontainebleau Las Vegas, developed by a partnership between Fontainebleau Development and Koch Real Estate Investments (KREI), a subsidiary of Koch Industries, secured the financing with the participation of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, Guggenheim Partners and VICI Properties.

JP Morgan Chase served as the administrative agent while Dustin Stolly and Jordan Roeschlaub of Newmark Group served as advisers for the financing. The property will be operated by a subsidiary of Fontainebleau Development upon completion.

Commenting on the development, Brett Mufson, president of Fontainebleau Development hailed the financing as “a milestone for Fontainebleau Las Vegas,” and as “a testament to the tremendous dedication” of the people who had worked to secure the funding at Fontainebleau and their counterparts at Koch Real Estate Investments.

Jacob Francis, president of Koch Real Estate Investments, thanked “J.P. Morgan, SMBC, Blackstone Real Estate Debt Strategies, Goldman Sachs, Guggenheim, and VICI Properties [in his comments] for recognizing both the potential of this property and the expertise of those involved in its capitalization, design, and construction.”

“Securing $2.2 billion in financing in today’s market speaks to the widespread confidence in this project and the team that’s come together to bring it to Las Vegas,” Francis concluded.

Twists and Turns

The property is located on the north end of the Strip, near Wynn Resorts and the Las Vegas Convention Center in a part of the Strip that has traditionally been a difficult one for hotel operators due to the lack of many other resorts nearby. In June 2021, Genting Group opened its Resort World Las Vegas in the area.

The partnership acquired the property in February 2021 and officially began work on the $3.7 billion casino resort project in November last year, planning to open the property to the public in 2023. The property is planned to have a 67-story hotel, a casino and convention space, as well as a two-level mall featuring more than 35 designer stores.

Originally launched by the owner of Fontainebleau resort in Miami Beach, Florida, Jeffrey Sofer, the project began in 2007 but was halted during the financial crisis as he lost control of it.

The property was owned by Carl Icahn and Steven Witkoff before Sofer and its partner, Koch Real Estate Investments, regained the ownership last year.

The Biggest Card Tournaments in the World

Dealer lays playing cards on the casino table.

Every day, card games and tournaments are taking place across the globe. Some happen in large exhibitions, while some are smaller affairs behind closed doors. This makes it extremely hard to get a good approximation of how much is won and lost each day.

Some tournaments pride themselves on being the biggest and best and in doing so, they attract the most daring players, the highest rollers, and inevitably, the biggest prize pot. Below, we discuss the world’s biggest card tournaments.

World Series of Poker Main Event

For the past few years, the biggest card events have been the World Series of Poker Main Event tournaments. Starting in 1970, the competition has had a $10,000 buy-in which saw its prize pool climb year after year. By 1983 it reached a landmark, becoming the first poker prize pool that was over one million USD. The 2022 event had a huge pool of $80,782,475. Won by Norwegian Espen Jørstad, he took away a cool $10,000,000.

This was not even the largest prize pot the competition has had. In 2006 it reached an eyewatering $82,512,162. The winner was US poker player Jamie Gold, who managed to grab $12,000,000. Should the uptake for the competition continue on its current trend, we may see this amount topped in the next year or two.

2019 Triton Super High Roller Series

Other than the World Series of Poker, the next big tournament in terms of prize funds was the 2019 Triton Super High Roller Series. With a buy-in of $1,000,000, 54 competitors managed to create a pot of over $54 million. A mix of professional and recreational players, around $2.7 million also went to charitable causes.

The winner was Chinese professional player, Aaron Zang, though he did not take home the biggest sum. At the start of the play, he made a deal with player Bryn Kenney who had five times the amount of chips he did. Therefore, although Zang came out as the victor, much of it was Kenney’s investment. Still, Zang did manage to pocket $16,775,820, with the remaining $20,563,324 going to Kenney.

The Big One for One Drop

The Big One for One Drop is another event hosted by the World Series of Poker. This time, the structure of the event is a little different. It takes its name from the aim of the tournament, which is to provide charitable donations to the One Drop Foundation, which focuses on providing worldwide access to clean drinking water. Attendance is by invitation only, meaning it has some of the best players in the world. Of the proceedings, 3.5% get donated to charity.

While it is held annually, the biggest prize was in the 2012 inaugural tournament, with a total of $42,666,672. Buying into the event costs around $1 million for this no-limit Texas Hold Em game. In this event, US player Antonio Esfandiari managed to win and leave the table with $18,346,673 in winnings.

World Series of Blackjack

Poker tournaments always command the highest prize pools. Yet for those who love Blackjack, there are still some worthy amounts on offer. While exact tournament statistics are hard to come by, an honorable mention goes to the televised World Series of Blackjack which ran for four seasons starting in 2004.

For each season, players were invited to compete or could win a spot via other smaller tournaments. Each player would have $100,000 in chips (This was lower in season one) to bet with. The prize pot got higher with each season, and by season four $500,000 was on offer.

Most games followed the same rules as any game of blackjack. A niche touch was that each player had one ‘Burger King Power Chip’ that they could use once in a round. This allowed them to play an element of the variant blackjack switch, in which they could change a card for the next one in the shoe.

Scottish Green Party MP Calls for End of Last Greyhound Racing Property

Scottish Green Party MP Calls for End of Last Greyhound Racing Property

Fife member of Scottish parliament Mark Ruskell has urged fellow lawmakers to muster the support to close Thornton Greyhound Stadium in Fife, which is due to have its next round of races in January.

Ruskell cited a report by the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission (SAWC) which is due to appear before the Holyrood’s Rural Affairs, Islands and Natural Environment Committee in February next year. While Ruskell did say that he didn’t mean to show bias towards the establishment of the report, he stated flatly that the time to end “this cruel and exploitative activity” was banned once and for all.

Greyhound Racing Not the Most Pressing Issue on the Agenda

Ireland and the United Kingdom are also planning to pass similar moves against their own gambling industry. The report, which is still in the process of compiling in Scotland, should help lawmakers make evidence-based decisions. Overall, greyhound racing and even horseracing have been under attack all over the world, with concerns over animal welfare raised in most developed countries.

To enact any changes, lawmakers would need to find evidence that the country’s Animal Health and Welfare Act 2006 has been breached. The act protects both racing and retired greyhounds which should be kept in specific dignified conditions. A rebuke has already come from the Greyhound Board of Great Britain who said that it was strange that the Green party in Scotland would consider this a priority for 2023.

The organization added that greyhound welfare was evidently at the very heart of every licensed establishment and professional who worked in the industry. The Board further added:

We constantly strive to enhance our welfare standards, which is why this year we have launched a new long-term welfare strategy that has received considerable political and veterinary acclaim.

Greyhound Board of Great Britain

The Greyhound Board of Great Britain reminded that as a regulator, it’s committed to ensuring that everyone involved in the sport upholds the highest standards for care and attention to greyhounds.

Concerns About Animal Warfare Are Misguided Say Insiders

The Board further warned of a significant economic downturn and a welfare crisis for greyhounds affected by the ban and shutdown on any venue, forcing the animals to move into new homes that fail to meet the necessary standards.

“Hard-working families across Scotland who share our love of animals will wonder why the Scottish Greens believe the parliamentary time and economic cost of a ban are a priority for next year,” the Board concluded.

The track owner, Paul Brignal, described the allegations that his establishment may in any way endanger animal welfare as ludicrous and said that it was not true that the Thornton Greyhound Stadium in Fife led to cruelty.

He similarly rebuked a report by Scotland Against Greyhound Exploitation which asserted that there have been 18,000 injured dogs and 3,000 deaths, reminding the people leveling these allegations that the establishments had 70 dogs in racing.

Dallas Cowboys vs Tennessee Titans Week 17 Odds, Time, and Prediction

The Dallas Cowboys have already booked a playoff berth, but this doesn’t mean they have no motivation coming into Week 17. They want to keep their good form going, especially after beating the mighty Philadelphia Eagles last weekend.

When it comes to the Tennessee Titans still haven’t secured a playoff spot, but a win over the Cowboys could achieve that.

When, Where, and How to Watch?

  • Time: 8:15 PM ET
  • How to Watch: Amazon

Dallas Cowboys are Fantastic in the Offense

The Dallas Cowboys secured a spot in the playoffs back in Week 15. Despite losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars 40-34 after overtime, they still booked the ticket to the postseason thanks to the fact that the Washington Commanders lost the same weekend.

Before that loss, they were in a superb run with four straight wins in which they scored a total of 149 points. That accounts for 37.25 points per game on average. Their amazing offensive stats in their period are mostly thanks to their quarterback Dak Prescott.

The 29-year-old signal-caller is having the season of his life. He’s playing with confidence, although we did see a couple of his passes get intercepted last month. Nevertheless, it seems that his decision to play risky football has paid out. We expect to see even more from him by the end of the regular season.

Tennessee Titans are Great Defensively

The Titans got to the no.1 position of the AFC South mostly thanks to their amazing defense. Their performances did dip in the last couple of weeks. For instance, we saw them concede 30+ twice in the last five games. As a result, the Titans lost a couple of games they really should’ve won.

As a result, they still haven’t secured a spot in the playoffs, but they’re very close to achieving that. This goes especially if they manage to beat the Cowboys on Thursday.

The bad news is that the Cowboys are the kind of team they usually struggle to beat. Even though the Titans are good defensively, they might not be good enough to stop Prescott & Co. Further, their offense just looks too anemic to do much damage to Dallas’ defense.

Dallas Cowboys vs Tennessee Titans Prediction

The Titans are in a need of a win, but the quality is on the side of the Cowboys. Anything can happen in this game, but our vote goes to the visitors. Prescott and his teammates just seem impossible to handle at this moment.

Picks: Dallas Cowboys to win and cover the spread

What Is Rakeback and How It Benefits You

What Is Rakeback and How It Benefits You

You might have noticed that a small percentage of your pot/tournament entry fee is taken by the casino whenever you play cash game poker or register for a tournament. This is called the “rake” and there’s no running away from this. With rakeback promotions, however, you can get back a portion of the paid rake as you play.

As the name suggests, this is a type of promotion that will periodically return some of your rake. The concept is easy; the more you play, the more you’re rewarded. Even if you only play periodically, you’ll still often get a little something back in your player account at the end of each week/month.

AGA Hails Ohio’s Sports Betting Structure and Pending Launch

AGA Hails Ohio’s Sports Betting Structure and Pending Launch

The state has done well in setting up its core infrastructure, argues Casey Clark, SVP of AGA. Ohio is on track to be the 32nd state to launch legal sports betting, too, and there are many local franchises that sports bettors would love to back.

Ohio’s Sports Gambling Industry Will Be Big

The state has issued licenses to around 1,000 restaurants, bowling alleys, and other facilities. Starting on January 1, any resident and visitor of Ohio who is at least 21 years of age will be able to bet up to $700 per week, part of the state’s broader ambitions to protect customers at all costs.

This is a measure spearheaded by Senator Niraj Antani who argues that the state is keen to make sure that people do not end up spending profligate amounts from the very start of betting operations, nor run into bad habits that could cost them dearly later down the road.

Kiosk betting will be limited to spreads, totals, moneylines, and parlays, which are pretty much the standard types of betting that other states support. According to AGA, Ohio will definitely drive a serious interest, with $9 billion wagered every year and another $63 million contributed as state and local taxes.

Some Forms of Gambling Still Blocked

Clark though emphasized that the problem of illegal gambling remains, with Americans spending half a trillion dollars on unlicensed and offshore operations. These operators hardly care for the well-being of consumers and pay no tax, Clark assured.

While Ohio is looking to set up its industry properly, not all events will be allowed to wager on. For example, the state has blocked high school sports from the viable gambling markets, making Ohio a bit of an outlier.

Another prohibited form of gambling is pre-recorded events, which usually include virtual sports. Events sponsored by primary or secondary schools where more than 50% of the athletes are under the age of 18 also are not viable betting markets.
