New Jersey Casinos Exercise Private Property Rights to Ban Guns

New Jersey Casinos Exercise Private Property Rights to Ban Guns

New Jersey firearm enthusiasts recently got some positive news as the state lifted a ban that prohibited the carrying of guns in casinos. However, this doesn’t mean that customers can just waltz in armed, as casinos will still prohibit visitors from carrying weapons.

The State Cannot Enforce a Gun Ban at Casinos

New Jersey is currently a battleground of ideals where pro-gun and anti-gun supporters are each trying to get their way. Recently, however, pro-gun activists had a breakthrough as a judge lifted the ban on guns in casinos, among other places.

Anti-gun lawmakers were trying to propose a new gun bill that would impose certain limits on where firearm owners can carry guns. It sought to prevent firearms at casinos, parks and other public areas.

However, pro-gambling lawmakers quickly deemed the aforementioned restrictions unconstitutional and shot them down. Judge Renée Marie Bumb restrained the bill and prevented the state from banning concealed carry in certain public places. While firearms remain banned at hospitals, airports, zoos, playgrounds and youth sporting events, they are now allowed in vehicles, museums, libraries and other recreational facilities.

As a result, bringing a gun to Atlantic City’s casinos is technically not illegal now. However, in practice, things are not as simple as that.

Private Properties Can Still Ban Firearms

As announced by Mark Giannantonio, the president of the Casino Association of New Jersey, casinos will leverage their right as private property owners to still ban firearms on their premises. In a statement, Giannantonio said that this is all to protect the safety and well-being of the guests.

Considering the Court Order temporarily restraining enforcement of the State law prohibiting the carrying of concealed firearms in public places, including casinos, all of the Atlantic City casinos are exercising their rights, as private property owners, to prohibit the carrying of firearms on their premises.

New Jersey Monitor later reported that the Casino Association’s decision has offended the pro-gun community. The Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs’ president, Scott Bach, said that not allowing the customers to defend themselves infringes their rights.

If the casinos don’t provide their own armed security, they’d better have good liability insurance.

Meanwhile, Atlantic City casino customers and lawmakers continue to debate the future of smoking in casinos. Anti-smoking activists argue that allowing smoking jeopardizes the health and wellbeing of casino workers and customers alike.

Mattress Mack Has Concerns about Texas’ Sports Betting Bid

Mattress Mack Has Concerns about Texas’ Sports Betting Bid

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is something of a legend in sports betting. The owner of the Texan Gallery Furniture retail chain is known for his fervent love for professional sports, his generosity toward his clients and his ludicrous sports wagers. One might think such a person would be one of the first to support the legalization of sports betting in Texas. And they’d be wrong.

“All that Glitters Is Not Gold”

Lawmakers in Texas are once again trying to get a local gambling and sports betting industry going. Currently, there are separate efforts to legalize both casino resorts and mobile sports betting. The sports betting bill was proposed by Senator Lois Kolkhurst a few days ago.

The new legislation follows a failed attempt to legalize sports betting in 2021. The earlier bill managed to secure the backing of some notable lawmakers and many notable sports franchise owners but still failed to pass.

Lt Gov Dan Patrick has been historically known for opposing sports betting. However, some optimistic proponents of wagering believe that his close ties with Kolkhurst might lead him to change his stance.

While Patrick may (or may not) change his opinion on expanding the state’s gambling industry, Mattress Mack is certain that Texas is not ready for sports betting – at least not in the proposed format. According to McIngvale, “all that glitters is not gold.”

McIngvale Elaborates on His Stance

Mattress Mack’s biggest concern is that the measure’s proponents are overestimating the revenues Texan gaming companies will earn. In an interview with the Houston Chronicle, the furniture mogul said that lawmakers should carefully examine the facts.

As for his more personal reasons, McIngvale shared that he knows how much of an impulsive bettor he can be. However, each time he wants to place one of his famous wagers, he has to drive to Louisiana, which inhibits his urges, protecting him from harm. He concluded that driving to Louisiana is not that much of an inconvenience and that he actually prefers things to remain that way.

In November, Mattress Mack made headlines by becoming the biggest betting winner in history, earning $75 million from his clever bets on his favorite Houston Astros. Against all odds, the team won the World Series, resulting in what’s probably the biggest payday in Mack’s life.

To this day, Mack continues his sports betting endeavors, winning some bets and losing some.

Sports Betting Apps in Ohio Have More Than 2M Registered Accounts

GOP Group Allegedly Funded DeWine’s Campaign with Gambling Money

The figure is for the entire month of January, and although the number of accounts is known, the total bets placed will be available later this month.

GeoComply’s Data Indicates Strong Growth

Data from GeoComply shows that Ohio’s sports betting apps have been enjoyed quite heavily in January. About 160 million geolocation checks came up from Ohio, but this doesn’t tell the story of how many bets were placed, for example, or the size of the bets. This information will come from Ohio’s Casino Control Commission and Lottery Commission.

These geolocation checks are how apps and websites can verify the person placing the bet is doing so from the proper location. In the case of Ohio, for example, it’s the reason why Kentuckians must travel there to place their mobile sports bets. However, the check itself doesn’t only happen when placing a bet – opening the app or traveling can also be triggers.

Therefore, it’s not possible to tell how many of those 160 million geolocation checks were actual bets, and why the data from Ohio’s regulators is so eagerly awaited. Although direct comparisons aren’t entirely possible, it’s noteworthy that Ohio surpassed New York in the number of geolocation checks during launch day and the day after.

There is also information about the number of active accounts in Ohio for January 1 and 2. GeoComply’s data showed that the total active accounts in Ohio were 784,000 back then. This means that Ohio’s betting apps have almost tripled their users within just a month. Given that Super Bowl 2023 is set to attract more than 50 million Americans, this growth might just continue in Ohio.

The Future of Ohio’s Market Looks Positive

Although there is no data to compare Ohio to other states for the entire month, there’s another metric in which Ohio is a clear leader, that’s the number of geolocation checks during the playoffs between January 14 and January 29. Ohio was leading with 87 million checks, followed by New York with 72 million, and Pennsylvania with 65 million checks.

The growth in the number of active accounts, along with the activity they display is probably very attractive for operators who haven’t jumped in the state yet. There were no fewer than 16 digital operators and 13 retail sportsbooks active in the state at launch, including FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, Barstool Sportsbook, and more.

These figures are also important when looking at Ohio’s future. Strongly developing markets sometimes leave regulation lagging. Not only does this inhibit growth at some point, but it sometimes also leaves lasting effects when corrective measures are late. Fortunately, Ohio had the foresight to implement tighter responsible gambling rules ahead of the launch to combat this.

Quads on HSP for Eric Persson; PokerGO’s $1M Buy-In Poker Game Upcoming

Quads on HSP for Eric Persson; PokerGO's $1M Buy-In Poker Game Upcoming

PokerGO aired Episode 3 of High Stakes Poker Season 10 Tuesday night, but it will host a truly high stakes game on Feb. 17.

When we say “high stakes,” we mean nosebleed level, times ten. No Gamble No Future, a usually pre-recorded and edited for TV cash game show with hosts Jeff Platt and Brent Hanks, will go live for three hours next Friday starting at 5:30 p.m. ET on PokerGO, and the game will require a minimum $1 million buy-in.

The blinds will start at $500/$1,000, but if you’ve ever watched a high roller cash game, you know that’s really just a starting point. Expect to see straddles — sometimes even multiple straddles — and perhaps the blinds increasing as the show progresses.

On Tuesday, Hustler Casino Live also announced plans for a $1 million buy-in cash game, and that will take place in May (no firm date determined).

The lineup for the HCL game isn’t yet set, but the No Gamble No Future game already has its cast of characters ready for what could be the largest live-streamed poker game ever. Those players include Eric Persson, Patrik Antonius, Rob Yong, Andrew Robl, MJ Gonzales, and Rick Salomon.

Persson will get ready for the No Gamble No Future nosebleed game Feb. 17. On Tuesday night, he appeared on PokerGO’s High Stakes Poker episode, and flopped the world against Jennifer Tilly. But, as commentator Nick Schulman said, his aggression may have cost him money.

The blinds were at $200/$400, but there were two staddles on ($800 and $1,600), Persson limped from the button with {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}, as did Tilly in the small blind with {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. Ema Zajmovic, holding {a-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}, also called in the first straddle before Matt Hanks, in the second straddle, bumped it up to $6,600 with {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}. Only Zajmovic folded.

The flop came out {6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, giving Persson quads and one opponent, Tilly, a little something to stay interested (flush draw). The poker playing actress fired out a bet of $10,000, music to Persson’s ears. Hanks called, but Persson decided to avoid slow-playing his hand and bumped it up to $35,000. That narrowed the field down to one player, Tilly.

When the {4-Hearts} appeared on the turn, action folded to the button, and he ripped off a bet of $60,000.

“I’m not crazy about this sixty,” Schulman, making his second appearance as a co-host on High Stakes Poker, said. “Maybe mix in a check there or just go small.

With the board paired and facing a large-sized bet, Tilly decided to keep her remaining $169,000 to fight another day. She folded and Persson scooped the pot, but perhaps he left some money on the table.

Persson Talks His Way Into Big High Stakes Poker Win

Rockets for Chino But No Action

Speaking of not getting maximum value from a monster hand, Chino Rheem three-bet his {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} on the button to $12,500 after Hanks had opened to $3,000 with {j-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Unfortunately, for the player with pocket rockets, that ended the hand.

Jean-Robert Bellande also was unable to maximize value with a monster hand. The long-time poker player and former Survivor contestant was facing a raise to $4,800 from Persson’s {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}. Tilly had already called that raise with {7-Spades}{6-Spades}. When action rolled over to Bellande in the big blind, he three-bet it to $28,500 with {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}.

Both players ended up folding, surprisingly including Persson, who had a big hand himself. Later in the show, Persson won a $60,000 pot with trips and a better kicker than the trips of Hanks.

High Stakes Poker Season 10 returns next week on PokerGO at 5 p.m. PT with Episode 4.

Justin Liberto Comes Out On Top in Potomac Winter Poker Open Main Event ($277,053)

Justin Liberto Comes Out On Top in Potomac Winter Poker Open Main Event ($277,053)

Justin Liberto

Event #11: $2,700 Main Event at the Winter Potomac Poker Open attracted 533 entrants, generating a prize pool of $1,274,400. On Monday, February 6, just seven players returned for Day 3, all of them looking to capture the title of main event champion and thefirst-place prize of $277,053.

Once the dust settled after just four hours of play, local poker pro and WSOP bracelet winner Justin Liberto emerged victorious, besting start-of-day chip leader Caitlyn Cobb in heads-up play to add another tournament victory to his already impressive poker resume.

“I feel happy, I feel fortunate how it all happened,” said Liberto when asked what the victory meant to him. It is indeed fortunate that he was playing in the tournament at all. “I actually was in the Bahamas until Day 1b and I landed here at 6:30 p.m. I got here at 9 p.m. and late registration closed at 9:45 p.m., so I got to play one level before late reg ended.”

One can only imagine how different things would have been had his flight been even slightly delayed.

As for Liberto’s plans for the future, he does intend to cut back on live poker. “I just had a kid that’s about to turn one so I play a little less frequently than I did for the past decade.” Still, he is not in full retirement mode just yet. “I’m going to keep being out there, keep trying to win, keep trying to make some more money.”

Event #11:$2,700 Main Event Final Table Results

Position Name Country Prize
1 Justin Liberto United States $277,053
2 Caitlyn Cobb United States $172,044
3 Joseph Lebrun United States $123,617
4 Mark Dickstein United States $90,482
5 Christopher Brown United States $68,818
6 Shouyi Gao United States $52,250
7 Anthony Lam United States $39,506
8 Hal Rotholz United States $31,860
9 Tim Faro United States $22,302

Day 3 Action

Anthony Lam came into the day as the second shortest stack with just 17 big blinds and was sent to the exits early on when his king-jack fell to Liberto’s ace-ten. Shouyi Gao was the short stack entering play and, though he was able to find a pay jump with Lam’s elimination, hit the showers in 6th place after an unfortunate river card saw his king-queen felled by Cobb’s queen-jack.

Cobb continued her red-hot run by next downing the ladies of Christopher Brown to bring his tournament to a close in 5th place. Mark Dickstein struggled to get much of anything going throughout the day and eventually bowed out in 4th in a blind on blind confrontation with Liberto.

All of those eliminations took place in a short space of time. It would take a little longer, however, for the final three to be cut down to two. With the ever increasing blinds, though, it was only a matter of time before someone was sent to the rail. That unfortunate individual was Joseph Lebrun when he called off for his tournament life with top pair against Liberto who held two pair.

Heads-up for the title
Heads-up for the title

That elimination set up a heads-up showdown between Cobb and Liberto. Although Liberto held the chip lead for much of the remainder of the tournament, winning a battle of attrition against Cobb, she did double on several occasions to remain in contention. After a couple of hours of play, her luck ran out when her top pair fell to Liberto’s full house to bring the tournament to a close.

Although Cobb was unable to secure the victory, she was visibly thrilled with her deep run and the accompanying $172,044 second-place prize. What makes the result all the more impressive is the fact that this is one of her first live tournaments after she was introduced to poker by her husband, local player Justin Arnwine.

That concludes PokerNews coverage of the Potomac Winter Poker Open at MGM National Harbor in Maryland. The series offered well over $1,000,000 in prizes over 16 events, and you can see some of the winners from our live coverage below:

Hustler Casino Live to Host Historic $1 Million Minimum Buy-In Poker Game

Hustler Casino Live to Host Historic $1 Million Minimum Buy-In Poker Game

In May, Hustler Casino Live (HCL) will host what producer Ryan Feldman anticipates to be the “biggest event in live-streamed poker history,” — a $1 million minimum buy-in cash game.

Actually, there might be two games, if Feldman puts together multiple nosebleed games, which he told PokerNews he’ll attempt to pull off. The exact date of the stream isn’t yet determined. The show’s co-founder said they won’t set a date until the lineup is in place.

What we do know at this point is that the no-limit hold’em blinds will start at $500/$1,000, but you can expect frequent straddles, the blinds to increase as the session progresses, and potentially upwards of $15 million or more on the table before it’s all said and done. Feldman appeared on the HCL pre-game show on Tuesday afternoon with host Billy “DGAF” to share the announcement.

Shooting for the Stars

Alan Keating hustler casino live poker
Will Alan Keating appear in the $1 million Hustler Casino Live game?

Feldman, who along with Nick Vertucci, launched Hustler Casino Live in August 2021, and the live-streamed poker show from Hustler Casino in Los Angeles has since dominated the industry. There’s never been a more popular live-stream show, not even Live at the Bike, which Feldman previously ran.

Last May, HCL hosted the legendary “MrBeast Game,” a table full of YouTube and Twitch mega-stars along with poker pros Phil Hellmuth and Tom Dwan. At one point, viewership reached 37,000 concurrent on HCL’s YouTube channel and over 100,000 across various channels, far and away a poker record. If the show’s producer has any say, the $1 million buy-in game will crush those numbers.

“Our goal is to get more views than the MrBeast game,” Feldman said.

So, who can viewers expect to see competing for unthinkable amounts of money in May? One fan favorite, Alan Keating, is certainly a possibility.

“Keating is a superstar and we want him to be on every one of the biggest shows that we put together,” Feldman said. “And we are confident that we will have him in this game.”

But, as Feldman explained, Keating isn’t locked into the game yet and neither is Eric Persson, another regular in the highest stakes games in Southern California and Las Vegas. But both are on Hustler’s radar.

“We have enough of our local players that we’ll be able to pull this off.”

Although he doesn’t have a lineup ready yet, Feldman expressed confidence in being able to pull it off and put together a roster of players with hefty bankrolls who can also entertain the audience.

“We have enough of our local players that we’ll be able to pull this off,” he confidently stated.

The potential lineup could be a mix of players such as Keating and Persson, mainstream poker legends, and perhaps non-poker celebrities similar to the MrBeast game, which Feldman said he’d love to get.

“We’re going to shoot for the stars.”

On Monday, PokerGO also announced a $1 million buy-in live-stream to air Feb. 17. The lineup will include Persson, Patrik Antonius, MJ Gonzales, Rob Yong, Rick Salomon, and Andrew Robl.

Both games should be highly entertaining and should bring in a massive audience.

Over 50 Million Americans to Place Bets Totaling $16bn on the 2023 Super Bowl

Friends watching football

Huge level of interest

As the popularity level of sports betting in the US continues to climb, the total handle for Super Bowl LVII is expected to be almost double last year’s figure. In a report released Tuesday, the American Gaming Association (AGA) lays out projections for Sunday’s big game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

a 61% year-on-year increase

The AGA estimates that over 50 million Americans will place a wager on Super Bowl LVII, which would be a 61% year-on-year increase.

The total projected betting handle this time around is $16bn. Bettors appear to be divided on who they think will win the big game, with 44% going for the Eagles and 44% going for the Chiefs. Most sportsbooks currently have the Eagles as the slight favorite.

Increasing engagement levels

The AGA report estimates that 30 million adult Americans will place a sports bet either through a bookie or an online or retail sportsbook. About 28 million people plan to make a casual bet with friends or take part in some sort of pool contest. Legal sports betting appears to be increasing interest in NFL games, with 34% of NFL fans saying that games are more exciting thanks to the regulated pastime.

To compile its estimates for the upcoming Super Bowl, the AGA commissioned Morning Consult to carry out an online survey of 2,199 adults nationwide.

The Super Bowl is the biggest annual sporting event for US sportsbooks, with many of them running lucrative promotions for bettors to encourage them to sign up for a sportsbook account. One of the more exciting promotions sees FanDuel bettors potentially receiving a share of $10m in free bets if former star tight end Rob Gronkowski scores a field goal during a live FanDuel Super Bowl commercial.

Expansion of the legal sports betting sector

Talking about the challenges that the industry faces with continued sports betting expansion, AGA president and CEO Bill Miller said: “….the gaming industry remains committed to responsibly delivering world class entertainment, educating consumers about how to bet responsibly, and combating illegal gambling.”

While the major US sportsbook operators have been spending a lot of money to acquire customers, some of them are hoping to start turning a profit this year.

Legal sports betting markets are up and running in 33 states and in Washington D.C at the moment. Another three states have legalized the activity, but sportsbooks have not yet gone live. About 57% of the US population now lives in a state with a legal sports betting market.

Two More Class Actions Filed Against Star Entertainment Group

Two More Class Actions Filed Against Star Entertainment Group

The allegations claim that the company made false statements regarding their anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing duties. This follows previous similar lawsuits filed against The Star by Slater & Gordon in March 2022 and Maurice Blackburn in November 2022.

Angry Shareholders Join Two New Class Actions Against Star Entertainment Group

Business News Australia reported that the law firm of Phi Finney McDonald is accusing Star Entertainment of making false statements regarding their compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations from 2016 to 2022.

They claim that the casino operator failed to reveal crucial information to the market, leading to an inflated share price and negatively affecting shareholder interests. The allegations also include accusations of violating continuous disclosure obligations and engaging in misleading and deceptive practices.

The second class action filed by Shine Lawyers is more or less similar to that by Phi Finney McDonald. The Australian Financial Review reported that Shine has accused Star Entertainment of misleading the public and violating continuous obligation laws, resulting in a decline in their stock price from March 2016 to May 2022.

In a 308-page statement of claim, the law firm alleges that the casino operator failed to inform the market about the potential risks of money laundering, links to organized crime, fraud, corruption, terrorism financing, and regulatory issues, despite being aware of these matters after a 2018 report by KPMG.

Craig Allsopp, Shine’s joint head of class actions, stated that investors suffered the consequences of Star Entertainment’s deceit. He will be leading the case with the assistance of Fiona Forsyth, Tim Chalke, and Owen Nanlohy.

Star Entertainment Group has faced numerous legal challenges as a result of investigations conducted by the gaming regulatory bodies of New South Wales and Queensland.

One of these challenges includes a legal action brought forward by AUSTRAC, claiming serious and persistent violations that left Star Entertainment vulnerable to criminal activity.

The casino operator was hit with a massive AUD 100 million ($69 million) fine and forced to halt operations for 90 days due to a stern stance taken by the Attorney-General of Queensland following the results of the Gotterson review.

Additionally, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission took action against the leadership of Star Entertainment, filing a lawsuit in December 2022 for alleged violations of their directorial responsibilities.

The legal difficulties faced by Star Entertainment Group have their roots in a review conducted by the New South Wales gaming regulatory body into the casino’s eligibility to retain its license. This review resulted in a massive AUD 100 million ($69 million) penalty and a major shake-up of the company’s leadership.

Record Number of Americans Likely to Bet on Super Bowl LVII

UCF vs Duke 2022 Military Bowl Odds, Time, and Prediction

A prediction made by the American Gaming Association (AGA) has outlined a record number of Americans likely to wager on the upcoming American football championship game of the National Football League for the 2022 NFL season.

The event will take place on February 12 at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, when the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs will be disputing the mouth-watering title in front of a massive audience.

Two in 10 American Adults to Place at Least One Bet

According to data collected from a nationwide sample that counted 2,199 adults, 20% of the Americans who are of the right age for gambling have expressed their intention to make at least one wager on the heated game.

The percentage represents more than 50.4 million Americans, marking a massive 61% increase compared to last year’s record number of bettors.

The AGA also expects the amount that will be wagered by these players to more than double compared to last year’s event, reaching the $16 billion mark. The figure will be 66% higher compared to the 2022 statistics.

The rest of the bettors (28 million) have expressed their intention to place casual bets with their friends or to join a pool or squares contest. This figure represented a 50% increase on a year-on-year basis.

As for their betting preferences, according to the pre-game survey, 44% of bettors expressed their plans to wager on Chiefs. The same percentage of bettors is expected to bet on a win from the Eagles.

NFL, More Interesting to Watch Since the Legalization of Sports Bets

The association explained that the legalization of sports betting in 33 US states and Washington DC have significantly influenced the rise in interest in the NFL.

According to the same data, 34% of sports fans stated the expansion of legal sports bets has turned watching NFL into a more interesting activity.

As a consequence of the continuously increasing interest in legalized sports wagers, AGA’s chief executive officer CEO Bill Miller explained the industry will stay committed to “responsibly delivering world-class entertainment, educating consumers about how to bet responsibly, and combating illegal gambling”.

Miller also acknowledged that the yearly Super Bowl is an excellent event that emphasizes the perks of legal betting on sports.

Among them is the way bettors are protected by regulated markets, the enhanced engagement recorded by sports media and leagues, and the extra tax revenue that reached state budgets.

Even more, the AGA has shown that over 70% of traditional Super Bowl bettors acknowledged seeing a campaign promoting safe betting in the past year.

Prop betting is also expected to turn into a popular wagering option during the upcoming championship that will be held at a stadium equipped with a sportsbook for the first time in history.
