What Are the Best Ways to Use Free Play?

I often get asked the best way to use free play. Is it worth going into the high limit room and taking a swing at a big hit? Or is it better to bet more carefully with the goal of converting it to cash? Here’s my thoughts.

Treat It Like Any Other Part of the Bankroll

I’m not a fan to taking it into high limit and doing some small number (10, 20, etc.) spins on a high denomination game. While I have said in the past (as have Matt and Steve in their videos on American Casino Guide book’s YouTube channel) that higher denomination slots can pay better over time than lower denomination ones, that happens over many, many spins. In a few spins it can go great or it can go bust.

If you wouldn’t bet your casino bankroll on a bet like that, I would advise against doing that with free play. While it’s “free money” provided by the casino, they’re going to know they gave that to you and factor that into what they expect you to wager on your visit, and if you burn through that fast you’re going to have less to work with.

Video Poker Overall is the Best Bet

Video Poker, when allowed, is going to be the best option, especially lower volatility games like Jacks or Better or Deuces Wild. Even if the pay table isn’t “full pay,” where the payout is going to be close to or even a bit over 100% overall, the house advantage will be lower than slot machines, especially lower denomination ones.

Some casinos know this and will restrict free play from being used on video poker, but that tends to be the minority of situations. Most casinos will let you play free play on video poker. Of course, it is important that you know how to play with correct strategy to attempt this option; if you don’t know how to play it, it could be more costly than even a slot.

Play a Lower Volatility Slot Machine

A lower volatility slot machine is best described as a game designed to pay more often, in smaller amounts. Examples of this is many of the Quick Hit series of slots machine by Light & Wonder (formerly Bally and Scientific Games), as well as the Quick Spin series of slot machines by Ainsworth.

Lower volatility slot machines are better for free play conversion as you don’t have to pray for a big win on a high volatility slot machine to deliver the value – the continued smaller pays gives you more reasonable expectation of some cash at the end of a session.

One other note is that many casinos will not let you play on games that have what are known as a Wide Area Progressive jackpot. This is one that breaks out of the casino’s walls and is shared by a variety of casinos. 

There are some logistical and practical reasons for this, but ultimately many casinos will require you to play on machines that don’t have these over the top jackpots. Often these jackpots will be the six and seven figure ones, or games like Megabucks that go even bigger. But playing link games with $10,000 jackpots will often be OK, as those are contained to the casino itself.

Payback Will Be the Same as a Cash Wager

Regardless of your choice, in today’s casino environment your payback will be the same as if you inserted cash into that same machine. Slot machine payouts are not programmed to have different payout percentages between cash or free play when talking the same machine on the casino floor.

In a previous era, casinos like Bob Stupak’s Vegas World would have a specific bank of slot machines for your free play opportunities, and those would certainly be set up differently than cash slots on the floor. But players would be playing a different bank of machines, whereas today players do it on the same slots that accept cash.

How Do You Keep Getting It?

Keep playing at a similar level every visit, and your offers should stay the same, more or less. Play more, and the others will generally over time increase. Play less, and they can go down.

If you go to the casino with the intention of taking the free play and not playing, you’ll likely be dinged for what’s called a “no play” day. Some casino companies are more strict about this than others; Caesars casinos tend to be among the most strict, shutting down offers if you don’t play even to your normal level at times.

Also be sure to take a look at how long your free play lasts. Sometimes you can bank it for another visit later in the month for places that let you keep it on account for up to 30 days, but be sure to use it before it expires, or else you’ll lose out on that opportunity.

Other Free Play Considerations

If you pick up other offers on a casino visit, the same rules around play requirements could apply, so picking up gifts and not playing could also hurt your free play. Casinos calculate the value of whatever gift, comps, free play, etc. they give you into their calculation so a gift pick-up still counts.

Redeeming free play works one of two ways. In one format, you put the free play into the machine and play it like cash. In another, you are rebated your wager after each spin, meaning you need to put a bit of cash into the machine and activate your free play to rebate your wagers. Both ultimately yield the same result, just handle the process differently.

And finally, it’s important to always play with your players card to ensure your play will be recorded and the casino can give you those earned casino comps and other offers. The only exception to this would be if you know you’re going to play much lower than your normal play – in that case the casino would record that as a below average day and likely lower your comps. If that is going to be a one-off, it may be best not to use your card on property that day.

On Friday, February 24, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an international money laundering watchdog with over 200 countries as members worldwide, reported that the Russian Federation has been banned from the organization over its invasion of Ukraine, while Gibraltar stays on its grey list.

FATF’s statement:

In this regard, in a statement from the FATF, they said: “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the continuing attacks unacceptably run counter to the FATF core principles aiming to promote security, safety and the integrity of the global financial system.”

“Considering the above, the FATF has decided to suspend the membership of the Russian Federation.”

In a statement, the financial watchdog also said that “Russia’s invasion represented a gross violation of the commitments to cooperation that make up the FATF Standards – rules that all members must agree to implement as a condition of membership.”

Commenting on Russia’s suspension, Raja Kumar, FATF president, said: “This is the first time a member of FATF is suspended. Russia is effectively sidelined from the organisation.”

Ukraine supports the decision:

Finally, Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to expel Russia from the FATF succeeded and its officials supported the FATF’s decision.

However, they indicated that while this is a step in the right direction, it is not enough and that Ukraine will continue to fight for Russia to be blacklisted by the organization.

In this regard, Serhiy Marchenko, the Ukrainian Minister of Finance, said: “It’s not enough but it’s an important step in the right direction.”

Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s ambassador to the US condemned the decision as a “dangerous step” and said: “The decision will erode global efforts to combat money laundering, terrorism financing and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.”

Russia will remain part of the Eurasian Money Laundering Group:

Although Russia has been expelled from the FATF, the country will remain part of the Eurasian Group on Money Laundering (EAG) and is expected to fulfill its financial obligations.

Both decisions regarding Russia were made after the conclusion of the second FATF plenary meeting in Paris under the chairmanship of T. Raja Kumar from Singapore.

In this regard, the FATF said: “We would continue to monitor the situation and consider whether these restrictions should remain in place at each plenary meeting.”

Gibraltar stays on the list:

However, financial watchdog FATF has also verified that Gibraltar will stay on its grey list this time around.

A major international online gambling center was added to the FATF’s list of enhanced surveillance regions after the watchdog’s June plenary meeting. Furthermore, at the same meeting, it was decided to eliminate Malta from the list.

Commenting on its decision regarding Gibraltar, the FATF said: “Gibraltar’s status as a place of gambling activity was a major factor in its decision, in particular taking aim at the local government’s failure in applying sufficient fines for anti-money laundering failings.”

The FATF report also noted Gibraltar’s high-level political willingness to cooperate with the watchdog and improve its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing regime.

However, the FATF supported Gibraltar’s commitment in this area, meaning that many effective sanctions are now being used by lawyers, service suppliers and gaming companies to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

In simple words this means more enforcement actions, fines and general knowledge of specific cases.

In this regard, the FATF added: “Gibraltar should continue to work on implementing its action plan to address its strategic deficiencies, including by showing that it is able to pursue more final confiscation judgments commensurate with the risk and context of Gibraltar.”

The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) has concluded that allegations made against Resorts World Las Vegas president Scott Sibella are unfounded. The NGCB investigated the matter for almost a year before delivering its determination on Monday.

The NGCB started to look into allegations from Brandon Sattler in April 2022. Sattler made the claims in a sworn deposition as part of a fraud litigation lawsuit. He alleged that Sibella had close ties to a convicted bookmaker named David Stroj, alleging that Stroj was a part owner of a now-closed food outlet within the Resorts World casino resort. 

Sattler is a controversial businessman and gambler who allegedly deceived his investors and used the funds to play high roller games in Las Vegas.

No evidence found

If Sattler’s allegations were proven to be accurate, both Resorts World and Sibella could have faced disciplinary action for having worked with someone who was a convicted felon. 

As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the regulator found no evidence that Stroj had a stake in the food outlet. His father was the restaurant’s manager and Resorts World completed a comprehensive due diligence check on the operation before signing a lease agreement.

When Sattler’s allegations first came to light, Stroj said that he had no ownership of his dad’s business and that he barely even knew Sattler. 

Before Sattler made the claims, Resorts World had already disclosed to the Nevada authorities a possible link between the restaurant and Stroj. The regulator also found that Resorts World fully complied with the investigation after the allegations were made.

The Resorts World Las Vegas only opened in June 2021. The $4.3bn property was the first completely new hotel-casino to open on the Las Vegas Strip in over a decade.

Strange allegations

Sattler was banned from Resorts World in January, just days before local media reported his involvement in bankruptcy fraud litigation.

Sibella said that they had met twice

Commenting on his relationship with Sattler, Sibella said that they had met twice and that he doesn’t “know him from Adam.” This ran contrary to Sattler’s claims that they had been friends for 20 years.

Sibella was an executive at MGM Resorts for a long time before coming on board in 2019 with Resorts World to help oversee the property’s construction and operations.

Banned for showing hateful content

A spokesperson for Twitch stated that AdinRoss was permanently banned from the platform after showing hateful content in his chat unchecked. The spokesperson said, “Per our Community Guidelines, unmoderated Hateful Conduct in chat, such as racist and anti-semitic messages, is not allowed on Twitch.”

Twitch does not permit behavior that is motivated by hatred, prejudice or intolerance….”

While AdinRoss was showing his Kick chat on his Twitch stream, he ended up showing several hateful comments. He did not moderate or stop showing the chat, which inevitably violated Twitch’s community guidelines. Twitch’s terms state, “Twitch does not permit behavior that is motivated by hatred, prejudice or intolerance….” 

AdinRoss was banned on February 25, the eighth – and apparently final – time getting booted from the streaming platform.

Unbothered

In his response, AdinRoss clarified that he was relatively unbothered by the news of his perma ban. He previously stated that he would be streaming on the newer platform Kick, featuring popular streamer Trainwreck. In the past, AdinRoss frequently voiced his distaste for Twitch while promoting Kick.

On his stream, he said: “I already signed my deal to this sh*t. It doesn’t matter. I’ve already locked myself in on Kick.” He went on to get homophobic, which is on-brand for him: “I’m not even going to bash Twitch completely, but the one thing I will say is this: If I had blue hair and did my makeup, would you have banned me, Twitch?”:

In contrast to what’s allowed on Twitch, the controversial streamer has been streaming explicit or even copyrighted content on Kick’s platform. There have been seemingly no repercussions thus far, leading many to wonder where the line will be drawn.

That being said, it offers great value and there are some nice touches including a homemade pizza station and a 30-foot salad bar.

The buffet is also known for having brilliant service with staff members being polite, competent, and eager to assist.

Try the: Pizza; Chorizo scrambled eggs; French toast.

Style of space: Like the rest of Luxor, the buffet has an Ancient Egyptian theme. Sarcophaguses, columns, and dark, dramatic lighting all create an atmosphere that children will absolutely adore, making this the place to go for families with young kids.

Market Place Buffet

As the American gambling industry coalesces around legalized sports betting and state by state the slots begin to spin and virtual chips hit the tables, there remains a fight for legitimacy for some in the landscape.

Manufacturers of land-based cabinets with games of skill or games of chance might find themselves in a sort of gray area – and they have good reason to worry that business life is not always black and white for them.

People gamble and they really don’t care if the odds are against them. It just takes one lucky hit to make up losses and potentially swing into the far-positive territory. Most people understand that a lucky hit may never come, and they are okay with that… content to pay to play for entertainment value as long as they at least have a chance to win big.

Gambling is the new big thing going by the numbers. The industry is well-regulated, with independent labs auditing the programs and random number generators with actual return-to-player percentages checked against the theoretical RTP to verify the maths and fairness of the games.

More Than an Advocate for American Casinos

The American Gaming Association is by its very nature an advocate for regulated gambling but it also uses its political heft to try to strong-arm competition its members may face. When speaking about online casinos that operate with offshore licenses and are completely legal at the federal level, though not in all states – the association tends to demonize the operators as illegal, unlicensed, and unregulated. In fact, 99.9% of all offshore casinos are indeed licensed where they are registered.

Addressing federal restrictions, it should be noted that IGT, now part of a world lottery conglomerate formerly known as GTECH, asked a federal court for final clarification about whether or not online casino gaming and lottery sales that cross state borders were under the purview of the Wire Act of 1961.

Each administration over the last decade or so has taken a different position on the matter with the Obama DOJ issuing an opinion in 2012 that the Wire Act only applies to sports betting (of course there were no online casinos in 1961 so how could it be otherwise?). The Trump DOJ contended that all online gambling that didn’t occur 100% within a single state’s borders was illegal under the act and reversed the Obama-era decision in 2018. The Biden administration let its position be known by refusing to defend the Session/Barr era lawsuits related to the matter.

Obvious that Wire Act Never Applied to Online Casino Gambling

That at least some members of the GOP knew full well it didn’t apply to poker or online casino casinos can be garnered from the fact that H.R.707 — 114th Congress (2015-2016) (introduced but never passed) sought to: “Provide that the prohibition against transmission of wagering information shall apply to any bet or wager, or information assisting in the placing of any bet or wager, thus making such prohibition applicable to all types of gambling activities, including internet gambling”.

IGT sued the U.S. DOJ over the ambiguously interpreted act in late 2021 and nearly a year later the company prevailed when the U.S. District Court in Rhode Island affirmed the prior U.S. Department of Justice (Obama era) opinion that the 1961 Wire Act applies only to sports betting – not to online poker or online casino gaming, making the question moot and as settled law.

The AGA will also often lump offshore operators in with the currently unregulated or under-regulated skill game providers found at truck stops, mom-and-pop restaurants, grocery stores, and other neighborhood venues around the American landscape. It’s wrong-headed and simply has no basis in fact in many cases.

Take Pennsylvania’s Pace-O-Matic for example. Courts have consistently ruled in the company’s favor finding that the slot-like games were indeed legal games of skill and not purely games of chance. It is impossible to be paid out if the player doesn’t surmise where the winning line is and activates the payout by selecting only the winning symbols.

While the courts have ruled for the company that hasn’t stopped some gung-ho or overzealous district attorneys from seizing the machines and peripheral equipment as well as the cash that’s in the machines when they are confiscated illegally (according to a recent judge’s ruling).

Skill Games Don’t Cannibalize Sticks and Bricks Revenue

One of the arguments that the American gambling industry and its protector’s project is that these skill games are somehow cannibalizing the “legal” operators’ revenues. But that is a ludicrous assertion on its face going by the AGA’s own numbers. The year 2022 was a record-breaking year for the US commercial gaming operators producing a cash haul of more than $60b last year. That record-breaking revenue smashed the previous record of $53b set in 2021.

The same report stated that more than one in three Americans old enough to gamble went to a casino at least once last year, 84m of us.

According to an article at G3 Newswire, a spokesman for Pace-O-Matic, Mike Barley said: “When you are continuously hitting the jackpot on revenue, you can’t at the same time complain that skill games are a threat to your casino business. It doesn’t work that way. The numbers are the numbers.”

Whether or not a causative effect can be found or direct lines drawn from one to the other, he contends an increase in the number of available skills games in a given market also sees casino profits on the rise.

Skill Games are 100% Legal in Some States

Looking at Pennsylvania, where the legal games from Pace-O-Matic are found almost everywhere across the commonwealth, gambling revenues, mostly from in-person casino slot play were up 18% in January over the same period a year ago and operators saw $475m of revenue in December.

Barley points out that there is really no overlap in players who play slots versus skill games because each type of player is looking for a completely different experience. People who play skill games step out for some entertainment in their own communities whether they drive across town to a fire hall, fraternal club, or a veterans post or simply walk across the street or down the block to a restaurant, gas station, or a small grocery store.

“It’s just not the case that a couple headed to a casino decides instead to stop off at an Elks Club to play skill games instead,” he said. “Trying to say that the two experiences are the same for players is ridiculous. We don’t have the flashing lights and wall-to-wall games. For us, it’s maybe five games in a corner of a neighborhood restaurant.”

The G3 Newswire article concludes with the suggestion that rather than “pointing fingers” at the completely legal skill games, organizations like the AGA might consider teaming up with Pace-O-Matic in order to squeeze cheating operators and illegal machines out of the market.

Pace-O-Matic wants more regulation of skill games as well as taxation by the state which would make state governments stakeholders in the small but important sector.

Squid Craft Games return

After the immense popularity of the 2021 Korean drama Squid Game on Netflix, variations of the famous game series (less violent versions, to be clear) began to pop up everywhere.

Squid Craft, the Minecraft version of Squid Game, was first hosted in 2022 and is set to return in just a couple days. Created by Spanish Twitch streamers Rubis, Ibai, and AuronPlay, this year’s roster includes about 200 participants.

Resembling the Squid Game television series, Squid Craft takes place on a Minecraft map containing various minigame sections. The participants compete to survive each round and eventually win the competition as the lone player to make it through each game.

Big names to appear

Though it caters to Spanish creators, the tournament is now being further geared toward a North American audience. As a result, many English-speaking creators will be featured at the Twitch Rivals event taking place on February 28, 2023.

Popular Spanish streamers Ibai, Xokas, and El Rubius will return to participate in Squid Craft 2023. Hailing from North America, streaming icons Pokimane, xQc, Amouranth, and MoistCr1TiKaL will also enter the mix. Plus, some prominent names in the Minecraft world will be joining, such as Dream and GeorgeNotFound:

Though 200 people are invited to the 2023 event, it is likely only 199 will actually play, as AuronPlay (real name: Raúl Álvarez Genes) will reportedly not be participating after recent grooming allegations surfaced.

A competition with a prize

Last year, the Squid Craft Twitch Rivals competition was hosted by Komanche and AuronPlay, who created the Minecraft mod for the game. With around 150 predominately Spanish-speaking creators in the competition, the winner came away with $100,000 in prize money.

The participating streamers will likely broadcast on their own channels, which last year garnered massive viewership across the board.
