Phil Ivey Wraps Triton Poker London Series with Second Title

Phil Ivey Wraps Triton Poker London Series with Second Title

On the way out the door, Phil Ivey concluded his 2023 Triton Poker London experience with his second win of the series, this one the $25,000 Short Deck Ante for $280,500.

He wasn’t the only player to double up on victories during what was an exciting series. Jason Koon, also one of the best ever, wrapped his series with two wins, including the $60,000 Short Deck on Thursday for $828,000. The GGPoker ambassador also took down a $60,000 No-Limit Hold’em 7-Handed event for $1,570,000.

Earlier in the 15-event series, Ivey collected $1,007,000 for winning the $60,000 No-Limit Hold’em Turbo. The 10-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner wasn’t done as he finished the series with his fifth career Triton victory in a short deck event.

Ivey didn’t enter the final table with the chip lead but his 75 antes were good for second place. Danny Tang was the biggest stack with 145 antes and would perform quite well at the final table. But he just couldn’t quite outlast the Poker Hall of Famer.

The tournament had just 31 entrants (18 unique), creating a prize pool of $825,000. Eng Ewe was the first to go among the final table of six, the only players who cashed. He took home $57,800.

Thai Ha (fifth for $74,200), Daniel Dvoress (fourth for $94,900), and Stephen Chidwick (third for $193,800) were the next three out. That left just two players remaining — Tang and Ivey.

By the time heads-up play began, Ivey had taken over the tournament and held a 7-1 chip advantage. It took him little time to brush off his final opponent and take down the $280,500 first place prize. Tang received $193,800 for his second place finish. For Ivey, it was his second title of the series to go along with second place and sixth place finishes.

The event kicks off Dec. 3 at the Atlantis Paradise Island, formerly home to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA), and runs through Dec. 14. Of the 15 bracelet events on the schedule, which was released Friday, 12 are of the no-limit hold’em variety, while the remaining three are pot-limit Omaha tournaments.

Check out the WSOP Hub on PokerNews here!

WSOP Paradise Schedule Highlights

Right off the bat, the series will feature a $1,500 buy-in Mystery Millions tournament with a guaranteed $5,000,000 prize pool. One day later — Dec. 4 — a second $5,000,000 guaranteed no-limit hold’em event starts ($1,500 Millionaire Maker).

In total, there’s going to be a minimum of $50 million in prize money awarded across the 15 gold bracelet events. GGPoker, the poker site sponsoring the series, has two of its own trademark events planned — $25,000 GGMillion$ High Rollers Championship ($10 million guaranteed on Dec. 5) and $800 Flip & Go (Dec. 12).

As is the case with any major series, the Main Event is the crown jewel, and there’s no exception at WSOP Paradise. The $5,000 buy-in Main Event begins Dec. 9 and will have a pot of at least $15,000,000, the largest guarantee of the series.

The three pot-limit Omaha tournaments run Dec. 7 ($25,000) and Dec. 8 ($2,000 — online), and Dec. 13 ($10,000). There are two online bracelet events on GGPoker during the series, including the aforementioned PLO tournament and the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout (Dec. 13).

Those events are the WSOP Paradise (Dec. 3-14), European Poker Tour (EPT) Prague (Dec. 6-17), and World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas (Nov. 29-Dec. 23).

Last year’s inaugural WPT World Championship was a rousing success and its signature $10k event had a $29 million prize pool. Many of the game’s top high rollers consider Prague one of the EPT’s top destinations, So, the WSOP Paradise, although there will be some coveted gold bracelets up for grabs, will have some competition. Tournament players are going to have some interesting decisions to make on where to go and play in December.

We look forward to making this year’s World Championship even more memorable for players.”

Three Lucky Poker Players Hit $500,000 BLAST Sit-and-Go Jackpot on 888poker

Three Lucky Poker Players Hit $500,000 BLAST Sit-and-Go Jackpot on 888poker

In the world of online poker, few games can match the excitement of 888poker Blast Jackpot Sit and Go (SNG) tournaments.

These fast-paced contests offer players the chance to win up to 10,000x their buy-in! And, on a fateful August 8, three daring players took the plunge into a $50 buy-in game, only to be greeted by a jaw-dropping surprise: a colossal prize pool of $500,000!

The outcome was a dream come true for the participants, as they hit the jackpot with the maximum multiplier for their stake.

The payouts were nothing short of astonishing, with $350,000, $100,000, and $50,000 going to the winner, runner-up and third-place player.

It was a relatively new 888poker player who emerged triumphant. Hailing from Canada, the player known as “Pelaps” had only registered on the 888poker site five months prior. Romania’s “valyspk04” bagged the final six-figure prize while Hungarian “vicuska12344” saw their bankroll boosted exponentially despite being the first player to hit the wrong side of the virtual rail.

Big BLAST Poker Winners

A lucky few players have recently won big while playing BLAST poker. Last December on 888poker Ontario, “Starplayer50” pocketed $140,000 after they and two others were competing for the lion’s share of a $200K jackpot prize pool. The runner-up and third-place finisher also bagged themselves $40,000 and $20,000 respectively.

In 2021, a trio of players hit the $1,000,000 jackpot, and what is even more impressive is that the jackpot was triggered from a $1 BLAST game. “Adria74” was the player who prevailed and collected the $700,000 allocated to the winner while second-place earned $200,000. Third-place also had a six-figure payout, with $100,000 being awarded to them.

WPT Global: Gutshot Draw Strategies To Avoid Trouble And Win Big

WPT Global: Gutshot Draw Strategies To Avoid Trouble And Win Big

It’s easy to get in trouble chasing a gutshot straight. These hands require particular care because you are drawing to a strong (and often well-disguised hand) in the form of a straight.

However, the potential strength of a flopped gutshot straight draw is only realized a small amount of the time — about 8.5% on the turn and 16.5% by the river. These long odds, combined with the hand’s potential strength, can make it attractive but expensive.

To help you avoid the most costly errors caused by these tricky hands, the team at WPT Global has put together a guide to untangle the mysteries of the gutshot straight draw. Read on to find out how to turn the troublesome guts shot draw to your advantage.

What is a Gutshot Straight?

First things first, some definitions.

A gutshot straight draw (also known as an “inside straight draw,” “inside draw,” “gut shot draw,” or even just “a gut shot“) is any straight draw where only one rank of card that will complete the straight.

For example, if your hole cards are 56 and the flop comes 89A, then you have four outs to a straight, only hitting a straight on the turn or river with a 7x on the turn or river. This is a gutshot straight.

This is as opposed to an open-ended straight draw where two ranks could complete the straight. For example, if you held the 67 on the same flop of 89A, then your draw would be an open-ended draw.

You then have eight outs to a straight as both the 10x or the 5x on the turn or river would fill up the straight.

A double-gutshot draw is where you have two separate draws to an inside straight. Because you have eight outs, this plays more like an open-ended straight than a regular gut shot. An example of a double gut shot would be holding 410 on a flop of 678. Here a 5x or 9x on the turn would give you a straight.

Another thing to note is that although the name gut shot implies the gap is in the middle of the straight, there are two draws that are exceptions to this idea. The wheel draw and Broadway draw can also leave you with just four outs if the missing card is the 5x from the end of your wheel (i.e. Ax2x3x4x) or the 10x from the end of Broadway (i.e. JxQxKxAx).

Learn The Odds

We mentioned earlier that your odds of hitting your flopped gutshot straight on the turn is just 8.5%. The odds are only fractionally better for hitting a turned gutshot on the river (8.7%).

For reference, 8.5% equates to needing pot odds of a little under 11:1 (11.76 decimal or +1,076 American moneyline).

Your odds of hitting a flopped gutshot by the showdown is 16.5% total, requiring odds of 5:1, 6.06, or +506.

Commit these numbers (especially the pot odds) to memory and compare them to a flopped open-ender which hits on the turn 17.0% of the time or 31.5% on either turn or river.

A turned open ender hits 17.4% of the time on the river, which is still better than the odds of hitting a gutshot with two cards to come.

Sometimes It Is Best To Check

The default level-zero play with a straight draw is to check, only calling if you get the correct pot odds. While playing in this straightforward manner won’t work against many opponents in the long run, there are spots where it is the best move.

Usually, this is the case when you are holding undercards to the board (like 56 on a board of 289 or 89K). You want to commit as little money as possible in spots like this.

Not only is your hand worthless against almost any other hand, but the card that gives you a straight may also give your opponent a better straight (e.g. they’re holding 6x10x or 10xJx in the example above).

Caution is called for, so check if you can and wait for more information.

Going for Gutshot Straight Draws When You Won’t Hold the Nuts

The examples above illustrate one of the trickiest aspects of any form of draw. If you’re not drawing to the nuts, then your outs will often give the nuts to some portion of your opponent’s range.

When you play a hand pre-flop, hitting a gut shot draw should never be the goal for your hand. Hitting a weak gutshot draw just adds insult to potential injury.

When you play a gutshot, remember that the difference between a draw to the nuts and any other gut shot is disproportionate compared to other forms of draw.

Beware of Dirty Outs

A dirty out is any out that fills your hand but gives your opponent an even better one.

Beginning players are often so excited by hitting their straight that they can’t let it go, even when all evidence suggests that their opponent’s range will have hit a much better hand.

In the previous example, that was a straight v. straight. However, this isn’t always the case. If you are playing 910 on a 267 board, then any eight gives you the nut straight. However, the 8 puts a possible flush on the board.

Similarly, your JQ on an 899 could be vulnerable to the 9x10x hitting a full-house when you make your straight.

Always keep this in mind when calculating your outs and implied odds.

Avoid Playing Out of Position In Multiway Pots

Big pots are always enticing. But remember how long your odds are. Multiway pots can feel like they are giving you good odds, but you’ll lose a lot chasing inside straights, even when there’s plenty of action.

Look for spots where you can get a free card. That means avoiding spots where you might call and face a squeeze bet — most often check-folding when out of position.

Use Aggression To Get Free Cards

Preflop aggression often calls for a bet on the flop. Your preflop bet has put you in control. Following your aggression up with a flop bet gives you a chance to win then and there if your opponent folds.

However, don’t feel obligated to keep that aggression up with a bet on the turn. Especially if you have position, you can take a free card if it’s offered.

This gives you options on the river. If you hit, your value bet might look like a bluff, earning you a call.

If you miss, you can make a judgment as to how profitable an actual bluff will be.

Big Bet Poker Condemns Player’s Violent Threats During Live Stream

Big Bet Poker Condemns Player's Violent Threats During Live Stream

Following an incident that involved one player threatening violence against an opponent and his mother during Wednesday’s live-stream, Big Bet Poker LIVE has issued an apologetic statement to PokerNews and said they do not condone such behavior.

Austin Yoo, a Los Angeles cash game player, and Jason Liu, a Stanford University graduate who has worked for Twitter and Facebook, engaged in a heated argument at the poker table that turned south real fast.

Note: The following video contains vulgar NSFW content. Please watch at your own discretion. Due to the graphic nature of the conversation between the two players in question, we have refrained from adding the full context of it to this article beyond the video below.

Liu, who claims he turned $500 into $50,000 playing in “underground Italian mob games,” announced to the table that he uses heavy drugs daily and that he is bi-polar. In a hand against Yoo, the two competitors both had 10-high and lost a $400 pot to “Pot Monster.” During the hand, they engaged in an uncivil conversation that apparently trickled over to off-stream. Both individuals have been banned from the show “for the time being.”

Keir Sullivan, who was seated in between the bickering poker players, told PokerNews that he “just wanted them to be quiet so we could keep playing.”

“I had just lost a big pot and was now stuck on the night after being up for the majority of the stream,” Sullivan, a regular on the show, continued.

Crossing the Line

According to Big Bet Poker on Reddit, both players got into a physical altercation before security stepped in to separate them. The confrontation didn’t air on stream as the cameras stopped rolling so as to not promote physical violence.

A source close to the show issued a statement with PokerNews addressing the incident:

We regret this confrontation happened on stream and shut the stream down as soon as we saw it escalating to such a level. Our goal is to provide a safe atmosphere for high stakes poker players from all walks of life to come, have fun and celebrate the game of poker. The two players involved have been banned from our stream at this time. We hope to be making future headlines with new ideas, big pots and great competition. Poker trash talking is one thing, but it crossed a line that doesn’t represent the spirit of what Big Bet Poker is trying to achieve.

Bally’s Big Bet Poker LIVE, which takes place at Tropicana in Las Vegas, is partially a spin-off of the iconic Live at the Bike stream that aired for 19 years in Los Angeles at the Parkwest Bicycle Casino.

The show streams live from the Trop and then parts of certain episodes later air on Bally Sports, a prominent cable sports network. Don’t expect to see the vulgar confrontation on cable TV.

Women in Poker HOFer Kathy Raymond Raising Money in Support of Daughter’s Cancer Diagnosis

Women in Poker HOFer Kathy Raymond Raising Money in Support of Daughter's Cancer Diagnosis

One of the industry’s innovators and Women in Poker Hall of Famer Kathy Raymond has reached out to the community to raise funds in support of her daughter, Rita, who has been diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer.

Funds raised via her Go Fund Me page will go to support Rita’s cross-country move from Connecticut to Las Vegas to live with her mother and undergo treatment.

“It was not long after hearing the news that Rita and I spoke and we both agreed that it was time for her to come home to Vegas,” Raymond said in an update on the Go Fund Me page. “I need to have her with me and she wants to be here. It is so much better to put my arms around her in person than to try to comfort her over the phone”

Many remember Raymond from her presence at the Venetian Poker Room in Las Vegas, where she moved in 2006 after spending 14 years at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Raymond started out as a poker dealer in 1992 at Foxwoods when she applied with a friend in a tough job market after her career as a CPA.

A Hall of Fame Career

Raymond was born in Manhattan in New York City and she grew up north of there in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She later moved to Hartford, Connecticut, and eventually attended UCONN, where she studied finance and accounting. After raising her family and working as the CFO of a large furniture company, Raymond left to work on her own as a private CPA.

After she jumped from finance to the casino world, Raymond rose through the ranks at Foxwoods. She started as a dealer and then dealer coordinator before she worked her way to Director of Poker Operations.

Raymond left Foxwoods with over 100 tables in 2006. Her next stop was the Venetian in Las Vegas, where she turned it into one of the top poker rooms on the Strip with the development of the property’s popular Deep Stack series. Raymond would eventually go on to be elected to the Women in Poker Hall of Fame in 2012 for her contributions to the game throughout the country.

After a brief retirement in 2015, Raymond joined the poker room at Green Valley Ranch, which boasted a large room and a full tournament lineup until its closure in 2020.

Update on the Go Fund Me

As of Wednesday night, nearly 50 donations had been made with nearly $3,500 of the $5,000 goal raised.

“I want to thank everyone so much for your support and prayers. I know that it has made a difference,” Raymond posted in an update. “I believe in the power of united prayers. Once she starts treatment your thoughts and prayers will be needed more than ever, so please keep them coming.”
