‘Poker Princess’ Molly Bloom: Mafia Put a Gun in My Mouth, Beat the Hell Outta Me

'Poker Princess' Molly Bloom: Mafia Put a Gun in My Mouth, Beat the Hell Outta Me

Molly Bloom recently appeared on the popular The Diary of a CEO podcast with host Steven Bartlett where she shared further details about the infamous Hollywood home games that put her freedom and life in jeopardy.

Dubbed the “Poker Princess,” Bloom helped run high-stakes poker games a decade ago involving A-list celebrities such as Tobey Maguire and Ben Affleck, along with billionaire entrepreneurs and investors.

Along the way, her life was threatened by mobsters, and she nearly ended up behind bars over how the game was run. The story was told in the autobiography Molly’s Game, also the title of a box office hit starring Jessica Chastain (Bloom) and Idris Elba (Bloom’s lawyer), although parts of the movie plot were jazzed up for Hollywood.

Getting Involved with the Wrong Crowd

Bloom, a former skier from Colorado who once had Olympic aspirations, told Bartlett that she vetted new players to the private games, which took place in the 2010s, “within an inch of their life.” She’d run background and financial checks on prospective players because so much money and so many high-profile people were involved.

But, as she explained, there were some shady characters who slipped through the cracks, such as a few “Russian-American businessmen” who had ties to the Russian mob and were involved in an illegal gambling ring and the largest insurance fraud scheme in New York’s history.

The feds then began investigating her poker game that had moved to New York’s iconic Plaza hotel. She, admittingly, began collecting rake out of the pots, which is illegal.

Bloom was making, according to her recollection, over $4 million per year running the games, although Houston Curtis, who now produces Bally’s Big Bet Poker LIVE, claims that he and Maguire were the ones mostly responsible for hosting the games and that Bloom was largely involved in building a clientele and providing players with drinks.

In Curtis’s 2020 book, Billion Dollar Hollywood Heist: The A-List Kingpin and the Poker Ring that Brought Down Tinseltown, he shares his story about the infamous celebrity poker games.

The poker princess said on the podcast that she received between 1% to 5% of the profits from winning players, which wouldn’t be much in a $1/$2 game. But there were often millions of dollars at stakes in her private games, meaning she’d make $20,000 or more on just one night.

Italian Mob Wants Piece of the Poker Action

Molly Bloom
Molly Bloom on The Diary of a CEO.

The story Bloom told on The Diary of a CEO was similar to that of her autobiography, but she gave some additional details about just how dangerous the game became in 2013.

Due to how much money she was making, she said the Italian mob that had ties to illegal gambling wanted a piece of the pie. According to her comments on the podcast, she received a call from an apparent mobster who told her she must give his organization part of the profits, to which she politely declined.

By declining the request, it caused some serious issues for the poker game host and her life was put in jeopardy.

“They sent this terrifying guy to my apartment that put a gun in my mouth, something that you just never forget, and he beat the hell outta me and took everything in my safe, including photographs, a couple things that I had from my grandmother,” Bloom said.

During that violent encounter, the unnamed person who entered her apartment threatened further action against Bloom and her family. But she lucked out a bit when the crime organization that attacked her was arrested a few days later and she never heard from them again.

“I get a judge that’s very disappointed with me, but ultimately a pretty reasonable guy.”

Bloom also faced criminal action, including major fines and 10 years in prison. But in May 2014, she was sentenced to probation after she admitted to being a key player in a $100 million illegal gambling ring.

The former poker game runner said she felt a sense of relief after the judge informed her that she wouldn’t be going to federal prison. But her life and reputation changed forever.

“I get a judge that’s very disappointed with me, but ultimately a pretty reasonable guy who said, ‘listen, you were running poker games and it seems you’ve done a lot to change your life. I’m not going to sentence you to prison,'” Bloom recollects of her sentencing day. “It’s hard to adequately express to you how big that moment is.”

¡Vamos, Vegas! Sergio Perez Races Down the Strip in Red Bull F1 Promo

¡Vamos, Vegas! Sergio Perez Races Down the Strip in Red Bull F1 Promo

The Oracle Red Bull Formula One racing team released a promotional video ahead of November’s Las Vegas Grand Prix and it’s an action-packed preview of what F1 has to offer when it invades the Strip this fall.

Grand Prix weekend runs November 16-18 for the circuit’s third trip to the U.S. in 2023 and its first to Las Vegas. The track will utilize a stretch of the famous Strip as well as a loop around the newly-constructed MSG Sphere. F1 has also constructed a $500 million paddock that will serve as the start/finish line on a lot behind the Strip.

Readers might remember hearing about the race car tearing through the Wynn Las Vegas last November. It appears that was part of the production for Red Bull’s epic race through Las Vegas.

The video features Christian Horner — Team Principal of the Red Bull Formula One squad — and Red Bull driver Sergio “Checo” Perez. Perez is half of the Red Bull team under Horner along with Dutch driver Max Verstappen.

The Mexican driver was previously seen on PokerNews when he knocked out Ramon Colillas with a cooler on the first hand of a PokerStars charity poker event at the Brazilian Grand Prix in November. The tournament was held at the Red Spade Pass event in Sao Paulo — a unique experience born out of the partnership that Oracle Red Bull and PokerStars created in 2022.

Check out Checo’s charity poker tournament cooler against PokerStars Ambassador Ramon Colillas

Perez has been with the Red Bull team since 2021 and Horner is its fearless leader. Horner, a former race car driver himself, gained worldwide popularity with a central role in the Netflix docuseries Formula 1: Drive to Survive. The championship-caliber Austrian team has dominated the F1 scene lately and they currently sit atop the team points race with a very comfortable lead.

In the video, Perez can’t find his race car after a wild night out in Las Vegas. With just a steering wheel in hand, he runs into a knowing Horner in an elevator and attempts to offer an explanation. In a James Bond-like tuxedo, Horner listens to Checo’s story with his usual cool-as-ice demeanour.

Checo’s night on the town starts at a roulette table where he meets fellow racers Bryce Menzies and Emelia Hartford. Menzies is a Red Bull truck driver and six-time off-roading champion, while Hartford is a custom car builder and content creator with a popular YouTube channel.

Menzies and Perez can’t help but challenge one another and soon it’s off to the races through the streets (and casinos) of Las Vegas and the valley’s deserted outskirts. Also featured is local legend Wayne Newton, as well as magician and America’s Got Talent winner Mat Franco. Franco showed up for the climax of the video with a disappearing act of the Red Bull race car as Perez zoomed up and down the Las Vegas Strip.

Check out the full video here and see where the Red Bull car ended up:

In total, there are 25 APAT bracelet-awarding events taking place at Dusk Till Dawn between August 10-28. They include a variety of No-Limit Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha tournaments, plus other events including H.O.R.S.E., Razz, 8-Game, Crazy Pineapple, Antes Only, Win the Button, and a £340 buy-in NLHE High Roller.

APAT Goes Fully International During 2023; Full Schedule Released

Scotland Looks to Defend Its Team Title

Although the World Amateur Poker Championship is the individual tournament every APAT member wants to win, the WCOAP International Team Championship is the event designed for bragging rights.

Scotland came out on top in 2022, beating arch-rivals England by 20 points, with Portugal rounding off the podium. This year’s team events see 12 teams, an increase on the nine from 2022, battle it out for their country.

Ben Burnhill once again leads out his band of merry Scots, made up of Nazar Mohammed, Blair Matheson, and Charlie Kearns. Team England look, on paper at least strong, with Wayne Parker leading out Danny Strange, Matt Carter, and Asa McGrath.

However, the United States could be the dark horses of the competition. Jen Mason captains Team United States, which consists of Deborah Worley-Roberts, Ben Mason, and Carey Hollick.

Darko Svesko Wins Merit Poker Retro Series Main Event ($567,000)

Darko Svesko Wins Merit Poker Retro Series Main Event ($567,000)

The 2023 Merit Poker Retro Series $3,300 Main Event has come to an end late in the night at the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino. The key quality needed to win this year’s edition was patience, as it took four lengthy days to determine the last player standing.

Out of the 1,233 entrants, 143 were in the money and shared a slice of the $3,375,480 prize pool. And after the dust settled, Darko Svesko was crowned the winner and secured the trophy and $567,000 first-place prize.

After a tough battle on the final table with “a lot of ups and downs”, he managed to defeat Oleg Netaliev in heads-up play. With his runners-up finish, the Russian player earned $417,900.

RANK PLAYER COUNTRY PRIZE
1 Darko Svesko Serbia $567,000
2 Oleg Netaliev Russia $417,900
3 Michel Atallah Lebanon $257,900
4 Nenad Dukic Serbia $191,100
5 David Hu Netherlands $142,400
6 Ruslan Volkov Ukraine $115,100
7 Dominik Panka Poland $95,900
8 Thomas Eychenne France $76,300
9 Ara Melkisetian Lebanon $56,700

Winner’s Reaction

“I feel absolutely amazing,” said Svesko a few minutes after lifting the trophy. The feeling was even better for the online professional player, considering it was his first time here in Cyprus. “So, to play the Main Event for the first time and win, it’s impossible. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience”, he added, still a little bit overwhelmed by his victory.

However, happiness wasn’t the only emotion he experienced. He went through the motions during a “really tough, exhausting day with long hours.”

“The final table was a big roller coaster,” Svesko told PokerNews. “It was up and down all night, shifting from a big stack to a short stack all the time”. Despite the swings, he managed to emerge victorious in the series’ showstopper.

Final Day Action

Just 28 players returned to the felt on the final day of action, with the players guaranteed a minimum payday of $17,210. Over the next eight hours, players began to find themselves on the wrong side of the rail. Following the elimination of Yossi Eluz (10th – $42,900), the nine-handed final table was established.

There was nothing to out of the ordinary to take place in the first 40 minutes but the final table then exploded into life with a double elimination. Nenad Dukic picked up pocket jacks and saw off Ara Melkisetian and Thomas Eychenne in a three-way all-in encounter.

Dukic continued his onslaught soon after, sending Dominik Panka to the payout desk in seventh place. Dukic flopped trips in a battle of the blinds and saw his opponent move all in on him, which was met with a snap-call.

Ruslan Volkov had one of the worst beats of the day after his aces were cracked by the ace-queen held by David Hu. The latter went runner-runner to make a flush and bring the tournament to its final five players.

Hu, a short stack soon after, was next to depart after his ace-ten could not overcome Netaliev’s king-deuce after their chips were committed preflop. A king on the river saw Hu bow out in fifth place for $142,400. Netaliev claimed his second final table scalp after another all-in preflop situation. Dukic’s deep run came to an end in the blink of an eye after his jacks ran into the Russian’s aces.

A third successive elimination from Netaliev brought in heads-up play, after his pocket eights held out against Michel Atallah‘s overcards. Netaliev went into the final showdown with 70% of the chips in play and one hand on the title.

A big bluff from Svesko saw him narrow the gap and ten minutes later he had the chip lead. And then a few hands later, Svesko was announced as the winner after he picked up pocket kings and got it in versus his opponent’s ace-queen. There was a drama-free runout for the Serbian which confirmed his Main Event triumph.

The Heater Continues: Preston McEwen Dominates Cherokee With 7 Final Tables in 7 Months

The Heater Continues: Preston McEwen Dominates Cherokee With 7 Final Tables in 7 Months

Five-time World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) ring winner Preston McEwen has been on a tear this year and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. Specifically, the Tennessee grinder has been crushing at Harrah’s Cherokee in North Carolina, where he recently made three final tables, including a third-place finish in the $1,700 buy-in Main Event for $175,713.

This isn’t the first WSOPC Cherokee stop this year that McEwen has dominated. Since February, McEwen has made seven final tables at the popular southern poker destination and racked up $351,111 from those final table appearances.

Incredible Heater in Cherokee

McEwen’s Cherokee heater started just a month after he took down the WSOPC Tunica Main Event for $183,563 in January. He followed that up with a runner-up finish in Event #3: $400 No-Limit Hold’em in Cherokee for $29,210 before taking down Event #7: $2,200 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller for $71,525 and his fifth Circuit ring.

McEwen also found a tenth-place finish and unofficial final table appearance in Event #5: $600 No-Limit Hold’em for $3,439 before rounding out the February Cherokee stop with a seventh-place finish in Event #8: $400 No-Limit Hold’em Monster Stack for $19,002.

“It’s great,” McEwen said during a PokerNews Podcast appearance in March. “This game’s tough, so you go through peaks and valleys throughout your career, and I was probably on one of the lowest ends of my career not too long ago. So it’s such a relief for me and my family. It’s pretty cool. A lot of stress unloaded.”

McEwen went on to finish third in Event #7: $600 No-Limit Hold’em in May for $13,431 but waited until the August Circuit stop the kick things up. He finished seventh in Event #2: $400 No-Limit Hold’em for $19,128 and sixth in Event #8: $400 No-Limit Hold’em – Monster Stack for $23,102 before finishing third in the Main Event for $175,713, just shy of his career-best score in Tunica earlier in the year.

The RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) is back on the road and the next stop is Horseshoe Tunica for the kickoff of the RGPS Road Trip series. The series runs from August 29 to September 3 and it culminates in a $600 Main Event with a $200,000 guarantee.

The winner of the Main Event will also claim their spot in the Dream Seat Invitational at Thunder Valley Resort in November. The winner of that will move on to the PokerGO Tour Championship in December where they will battle it out with poker’s best for a $1,000,000 prize pool.

The last time RGPS stopped in Tunica in March it was Arkansas native Kevin Broadway that took home $46,804 and a RGPS after a final-two chop deal in the Main Event. Broadway, a potato chip manufacturer by trade, outlasted a field of 601 players for a share of the $312,520 prize pool.

RGPS returns to Horseshoe Tunica for a late-summer series on Tuesday, August 29, and kicks off the action with the 10 a.m. $200 Seniors ring event. After lunch, it’s the $200 Series Opener ring event and the opening evening wraps up with the $200 Opening Night Guest Bounty. The popular bounty event is a mainstay on the tour and special guests will be holding envelopes that can hold prizes from RunGood Apparel store credit to $1,000 cash.

Join PokerNews at King's Resort for the €4M guaranteed Big Wrap PLO Series

Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) players are set to travel to King’s Resort, Rozvadov, from far and wind for the latest edition of The Big Wrap. Running from September 12-18, The Big Wrap is a week-long PLO festival with combined guarantees of €4 million. As you would expect from such a prestigious series, the PokerNews Live Reporting team will be on the ground throughout, bringing you all of the action from three of the biggest events.

PokerNews‘ coverage begins on September 13 with The Big Wrap Diamond 10K PLO High Roller, a two-day affair that is guaranteed to attract some of the biggest names in the business to King’s Resort, not least because it has a €2 million guaranteed prize pool. A similar-sized buy-in event took place at King’s in March, although it featured a €500,000 guarantee. A field of 142 players created a €1,308,530 prize pool, which the anonymous champion scooped €337,000 from.

In September 2022, Theo Jorgensen defeated his fellow Dane, Martin Dam, heads-up to bank €426,840. Expect even larger top prizes this time around.

The second Big Wrap event you can follow from the comfort of your home runs September 15-16. The €10,000 buy-in €1 million guaranteed Big Wrap Platinum 10K PLO High Roller immediately follows on from the Diamond, so another star-studded field is on the cards.

Running alongside the Platinum event is The Big Wrap 2K PLO Main Event, a €2,350 buy-in tournament with €500,000 guaranteed to be won. Both starting flights play until the end of the 11th 45-minute level, with late registration available for the first two levels of Day 2. It would be a significant surprise if the Main Event’s final prize pool is not way more than the advertised guarantee.
