Only eight players remain at the end of Day 3 in the World Poker Tour (WPT) $5,250 buy-in Gardens Poker Championship and among them is one of WPT’s most popular faces. Day 3 Action

Day 3 saw 22 players return after the elimination of WPT champion Daniel Strelitz to close out the second day of play, according to WPT live updates.

Hathi Hosseini was the first to fall on Day 3 as she shoved king-three from the small blind as Calvin Ma woke up with a decent ace in the big blind. Hosseini couldn’t improve and had to settle for a $13,420.

Choi had a big moment when he was all in and dominated with ace-ten against the ace-queen of Albyn Bello. Choi was drawing even thinner on the flop before the runout gave him a runner-runner straight to double and leave Bello short.

Choi’s run-good was just beginning as he went on to double at least two more times to make it to the final table with 20 big blinds.

Speaking of run-good, Owen had a huge double-up when he called Travis Egbert’s four-bet jam as both players held an offsuit ace-king. Owens had the K♦ and it was good news as the flop landed 6♦4♦3♦ and Owen didn’t have to wait long for the J♦ to hit on the turn.

The veteran vlogger and WPT ambassador later finished off Egbert to make way for the nine-handed redraw.

Owen has had serious success since signing on as a WPT ambassador and pivoting to tournaments. He finished 35th in the 2022 WPT World Poker Championship for $99,600 and in March was runner-up in a WPT Prime Cambodia event for $28,373. If the popular content creator can catch some heat at the final table, he may just walk away a WPT champion.

As the WPT Gardens Poker Championship plays down to six, the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown final table will be gearing up in Las Vegas inside the HyperX ESports Arena. That live-streamed event will kick off at 4:30 p.m. local time with commentary from Jamie Kerstetter and Jeff Platt.

More than a decade after winning the 2012 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event for $8.5 million, Greg Merson is living a peaceful life in Hoboken, New Jersey.

The Maryland native, who famously won two bracelets in 2012 for a total haul of $9.7 million and to be named the WSOP Player of the Year, recently caught up with PokerNews‘ Jesse Fullen and Matt Hansen on their currently underway East Coast Road Trip.

From the drug addiction recovery that proceeded his incredible run to his current life in New Jersey, here’s a look at the journey of the 2012 Main Event champion.

Merson’s Incredible Run

Amazingly, Merson’s Main Event victory in July 2012 was not his first seven-figure score that month. Just days earlier, Merson defeated heads-up opponent Keith Lehr in $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed for $1.1 million.

The 24-year-old went on to dominate a field of 6,598 runners and found himself at a stacked final table that included Jeremy Ausmus, Michael Esposito and eventual heads-up opponent Jesse Sylvia.

In the final hand of the tournament, Merson four-bet jammed with K♦5♦ and was called by the Q♠J♠ of Sylvia. The board bricked out and Merson’s king-high stayed ahead to make him the 2012 Main Event champion and earn him his second bracelet of the series.

If that weren’t enough, the victory also pushed Merson ahead of POY frontrunner Phil Hellmuth to earn him the title of Player of the Year.

Exactly a decade later, Norway’s Espen Jorstad followed in Merson’s footsteps by winning a maiden bracelet before going on to win the Main Event.

More to Merson’s Story

There’s another reason Merson’s incredible run in 2012 is notable. It occurred just months after the young poker player went sober following an ]earlier drug relapse when his career took a massive hit on Black Friday.

As PokerNews wrote in 2013, “By getting clean, Merson realized his outstanding potential in poker, something that motivated him to get clean, stay clean, and eventually reach ultimate poker greatness.”

Merson stayed active on the felt throughout the rest of the decade and managed to land some big scores, including $948,996 from a runner-up finish in a 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller. Two years later, Merson finished 13th in the same event for $88,020.

In more recent years, Merson has returned to his roots as an online grinder. In 2022, he finished third in a WSOP Online $5,300 High Roller Freezeout for $96,465.

All said and done, Merson sits second on Maryland’s all-time money list with $11.5 million, on the tail of Anthony Gregg ($12 million) and comfortably in front of Christian Harder ($5 million).

Settling Down In New Jersey

Though not super active on the live felt, Merson does play a handful of live events, including some at the 2022 WSOP. Additionally, Merson continues to grind online from his home in New Jersey.

The 2012 Main Event champion was kind enough to let PokerNews know that he will be attending the 2023 WSOP this summer, and we’ll be sure to catch up with the champ in Las Vegas.

There will be three consecutive live-streamed World Poker Tour final tables this week as the WPT team heads to the HyperX ESports Arena at the Luxor in Las Vegas.

First up will be the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown final table on May 25, followed by the WPT Choctaw final table the next day. On May 27, the WPT Gardens Poker Championship will close out the busy WPT week.

Before any of that, the WPT Gardens Poker Championship needs to play down to a final six. There are two tables left with Day 3 underway and a fourth day scheduled to take place May 25.

Can Weng Close Out?

All eyes will be on Bin Weng as he enters the final table of history’s second-largest WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown. Not only does Weng have the chip lead, but he also sits atop the remaining six at the WPT Choctaw final table.

In the first event, Weng sits comfortably above Sridhar Sangannagari and Mitch Garshofsky with David Mzareulov and Naing Thu further behind and Rafael Farah Jarufe entering the final table as the short stack.

Each player is after their first WPT title and the $1,128,250 up top for the champion.

Meanwhile, Weng leads a table of six in the WPT Choctaw Main Event that includes 2013 WPT bestbet Jacksonville Fall Poker Scramble winner Jared Jaffee and 2022 WPT Venetian Las Vegas runner-up Mike Vanier close on Weng’s tail.

Weng will also have to fend off two-time WPT Champion Erkut Yilmaz, who will enter as a short stack as he fights for a third title. Texas’ Dojie Ignacio and Arkansas’ Rusty Farrin round out the WPT Choctaw final tables as both are guaranteed a career-best score as they chase the $400,740 top prize.

Owen Still Alive in WPT Gardens Poker Championship

Before three days of consecutive final tables, the WPT Gardens Poker Championship in Southern California still needs to reach a final six.

The currently underway Day 3 began with 22 players and got down to two tables within the first few hours of play. WPT ambassador Brad Owen is among those remaining as he looks to make another deep World Poker Tour run.

All remaining players are looking for their first WPT title, among them Day 2 chip leader Ky Nguyen, Jeremy Eyer, Travis Egbert and Day 1a chip leader Girish Reknar. Follow the Day 3 action with live updates from the WPT team.

The plan is to play five 90-minute levels on Day 3 or down to six players. A Day 4 is scheduled to take place at noon local time on May 25.

The World Poker Tour (WPT) has something exciting underway on its WPT Global platform — a hybrid online and live poker tournament that will pay out at least $500,000 in Mexico later this month.

For $550, players can enter the OnLive competition on WPT Global, and those who reach Day 2 will head to Mexico City for the live poker portion of the tournament. That will take place May 31 at Frontón México Centro de Entretenimiento, a venue that hosts top-level entertainment.

The WPT500 tournament, part of WPT Mexico Feria, isn’t the only big event planned. There will also be a $5,000 WPT Mystery Bounty, and the World Poker Tour will add on an extra $50,000 Mystery Bounty pool.

Day 1 in the $550 no-limit hold’em tournament began April 9 with the first opening starting flight. On Sunday (May 21), WPT Global will host the final Day 1 session, beginning at 2:30 p.m. PT. After that, those who are left will be entered into the Day 2 session on May 31 in Mexico City.

At present, 268 players have entered the tournament, with 31 moving on to Day 2. One out of every eight players who enter will reach the money. There is unlimited reentry in this event, but players only have one more opportunity to get in on the action (Sunday).

Players must have a WPT Global account to enter, and those who are residents of a country not served by WPT Global are not eligible to compete in these events. On May 30, the one and only live Day 1 starting flight will take place at the aforementioned venue in Mexico City. The players from that flight will join all the online qualifiers for Day 2 the following day.

WPT Global will also kick off its Spring Festival May 21, which includes dozens of events such as the WPT Prime Online Championship, a $1,060 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament with $200,000 guaranteed. The series runs through June 4.

Richard Baker is a long-standing member of the vibrant Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT) community, and has tasted plenty of success on the amateur circuit. Baker added his first APAT gold medal to his collection this weekend, which now keeps his six other medals company, after taking down the £50,000 guaranteed UK Amateur Poker Championship Main Event.

After an online Day 1 at GGPoker, and four flights at the home of British poker, Dusk Till Dawn, 475 players bought into the Main Event. Seventy-two of those starters navigated their way to Day 2, having locked in a min-cash of £200 for their efforts.

APAT regulars, including Paul Haycock, Peter Wigglesworth, Tristan Chaplin, and Andrea King cashed in the £120 buy-in Main Event, although they fell short of a final table appearance.

APAT UK Amateur Championship Main Event Final Table Results

Each of the nine amateurs that sat down at the final table secured at least £1,100 for their efforts, but each of them had an eye on the top three finishing places where the coveted APAT medals awaited.

Michael Simpson (£1,100) and Gaurav Gupta (£1,300) were the first two finalists to find themselves in the wrong side of the rail. Ben Burnhill (£1,500) and Warwick Brindgley (£1,700) joined the ever-growing list of eliminated players before Dan Owston, champion of the 2022 World Championship of Amateur Poker Main Event, fell in fifth (£2,000).

The final four locked horns knowing the next player heading to the showers would be doing so, having narrowly missed out on an APAT medal. Zsolt Burkus was that unfortunate soul, although their fourth-place finish did pad their bankroll to the tune of £2,400.

APAT Announces Partnership with GGPoker

Third place, £3,000, and a bronze medal went to Tahir Ahmed, who got his stack in with ten-nine, having improved to a queen-high straight on the all-club flop. David Collier looked up Ahmed with a pair of black aces in the hole and proceeded to hit a flush on the river.

Collier and Baker fought tooth and nail one-on-one for 20 minutes before something finally gave. A huge pot went Baker’s way when both he and Collier made two pair but Baker’s king-kicker played. That hand gifted Baker a monster-sized advantage of 45 million to 2 million chips.

Collier three-bet all-in on the next hand with king-eight, only to discover Baker was sat there with pocket kings; Baker made one of the easier calls of his career. The five community cards failed to come to Collier’s rescue, and he consoled himself with a £4,750 second place prize, plus a silver APAT medal. A delighted Baker reeled in £7,500 in prize money plus the all-important gold APAT medal.

Other APAT UK Amateur Poker Championships Results

Sophie Clarke was the biggest winner in the non-Main Event tournaments this weekend, courtesy of triumphing in the £340 APAT High Roller. The event attracted 82 entrants, and Clarke outlasted them all.

The High Roller ended in a four-way ICM deal that saw Clarke finish in first place for £5,720, William Kang finish second for £5,325, an anonymous player receiving £4,240 for their third-place exit, and Shiram Subramanian banking £3,900 for a fourth-place exit.

APAT Heads to Bonny Scotland

A trip to the Grosvenor Maybury Casino in Edinburgh, Scotland, is next up for APAT players, the venue for the Scottish Amateur Poker Championship. It marks the first time since March 2020 that APAT has headed north of the border for the Scottish Amateur Poker Championship.

Back then, the Main Event commanded a £90 buy-in, and saw Michel Yacoub come out on top of a 132-strong field to bank £2,800 of the £9,900 prize pool. Will Yacoub be in town to defend his title? We only have until June 9 to wait.

The 2023 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) on PokerStars continues to roll on, and the big scores keep on coming for the platform’s ambassadors.

PokerStars’ Sebastian “peaceandloove” Huber picked up the biggest score of his career after turning $55 into a $76,066 payday. The Twitch streamer satellited into SCOOP 79-H: $5,200 High Roller and put in a huge run before bowing out in third place after a sick beat.

The High Roller had 112 entries and saw the prize pool swell to $560,000, smashing the $400,000 guarantee.

Career High Score for Huber

The first final table casualty came on the third hand of play where “hello_totti” ran their ace-king into pocket kings held by “Stumpfed” to give everyone a pay jump. Soon after, “P0KERPR02.0” headed to the wrong side of the rail after losing a flip to “ArtHouse2011” to bring the event to its final seven players.

Huber then found a double-up with ace-king through “Stumpfed”, who called the all in with a weaker ace.

Renan “Internett93o” Bruschi then jammed on the short-stacked Ognyan “cocojamb0” Dimov from the small blind with six-three and the latter called off his tournament life with king-ten. Bruschi paired his three on-the-flop and rivered trips to seal the elimination.

After a few more hands played out, “Stumpfed” moved all in from the small blind with jack-nine and was snapped by Bruschi from the big blind with ace-king. Bruschi would go on to make a royal flush to leave “Stumpfed” as the short stack. The next hand, Huber finished “Stumpfed” off after his pocket eights held against his opponent’s ace-ten.

Patrick “Pads1161” Leonard then bagged the fifth-pace prize of $44,383, just a day after picking up his seventh SCOOP title and $200,000. Back-to-back victories eluded Leonard as he was dominated by “ArtHouse2011” and couldn’t find the three-outer to double up.

At four-handed play, there were hints of a deal being made, but Bruschi declined that, despite being the short stack. That decision paid off hugely as “ArtHouse2011” completed the double bust out of Huber and Alexandros “Pwndidi” Theologis in dramatic fashion.

“ArtHouse2011”, the chip leader, shipped his stack in from the button with queen-ten. Theologis and Huber, who held pocket eights and queens respectively, called off their stacks from the blinds. “ArtHouse2011” paired his ten on the flop and then found another ten on the river to send out both players.

Then on the final hand of the night, Bruschi moved in with ace-six and his opponent called with king-queen. Bruschi made a pair of sixes on the flop but “ArtHouse2011” spiked a queen on the river to lock up the win.

SCOOP 79-H: $5,200 High Roller Final Table Results

All Eyes on Conclusion of Super Tuesday

Day 1 for the low, medium and high tiers for SCOOP 86 – Super Tuesday all played out yesterday, with the events playing down to a winner today.

In the low edition of the tournament, which had a $109 buy-in, PokerStars ambassador Georgina “GJReggie” James sits in 40th place out of the 100 players remaining where $59,210 awaits the winner. The tournament saw 4,156 entries, creating a $414,600 prize pool. “razvi_audi” currently holds the chip lead, with notable names such as Benny “RunGodlike” Glaser and Lucio “WizardOfAz” Lima still in contention.

Huber also has another chance of a big score in the medium tier of Super Tuesday. The $1,050 buy-in event has 28 players remaining, with Huber currently sitting at the bottom of the pile. He’s already locked up a cash of at least $4,386, but of course, all eyes will be on the $118,828 that awaits the winner.

The high instalment of the Super Tuesday events came with a $10,300 buy-in and a $600,000 guarantee. The prize pool now stands at $870,000 thanks to the 87 entries, with just nine remaining. And as expected with a High Roller, the final table is littered with star names.

A huge $207,901 is set aside for the champion, and you can see how that event unfolds on the PokerStars Twitch Channel, with cards-up coverage from 6 p.m. BST.
