Turkish Authorities Commenced New Crackdown on Illegal Betting

Turkish Authorities Commenced New Crackdown on Illegal Betting

Illegal betting activities in northern Cyprus continue, organized by relatives of murdered businessman Halil Falyali, according to Turkish Minister of Interior Suleyman Soylu.

Illegal Betting Continues

Soylu, who spoke to the Turkish news media channel TRT, claimed that the entire area from the Balkans to Malta and the north is filled with illegal online betting operations.

“We conducted a preliminary operation in October 2022,” Soylu said and went on to announce that a new crackdown on illegal gambling is underway since this Monday, outlining that “the organization in question” operates “15 betting sites, which are active in island countries with a favorable tax regime, originating in Malta.”

Soylu also commented on the operation in October when Turkish authorities arrested 46 people on suspicion of participating in an illegal betting ring.

46 individuals across eight provinces were arrested back then after an investigation linked to the murder of Falyali led investigators to an organization that was receiving the proceeds of illegal betting in the form of cryptocurrency assets.

Soylu said that some of the 136 individuals who were identified as being involved with the illegal betting operations are relatives of Falyali. He also raised the total number of arrests during the October crackdown to 101.

“The income from these crimes can be used very easily in other countries,” he noted.

Underworld and Political Involvement

On Falyali’s execution, Soylu mentioned that following the six arrests in Turkey, authorities identified links to activities in northern Cyprus and Malta. Falyali was shot while being driven home and died of his wounds in the hospital. His driver was also shot dead during the attack.

The execution of Falyali stirred media speculation of his alleged links to organized crime, with several reports speculating that he was the mastermind behind a gambling empire in the north, and by running the illegal betting activities he has managed to establish powerful connections with the underworld that may have led to his gang-style murder.

Falyali was previously pointed as one of the political figures with shady activities by Turkish gang leader Sedat Peker, who implied Falyali’s involvement with drug trafficking and money laundering in collaboration with the son of former Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, Erkan, but Falyali had denied allegations.

Turkish media also speculated about links between Falyali and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar after a photo of them dining together appeared to confirm suspicions raised by a published telephone call in February, which alleged Falyali was sponsoring Tatar’s election campaign.

Remembering California Poker Player Ramsey Doumani, Who Passed Away

Remembering California Poker Player Ramsey Doumani, Who Passed Away

Southern California poker player Ramsey Doumani passed away on Thursday. Details about the cause of death aren’t publicly available at this time.

Known by his first name to viewers, Ramsey was previously a regular player on Live at the Bike. He was popular among those who watched the longstanding live-streamed poker show.

Poker Player Remembered by Friends

Many poker players shared memories of the late poker player on social media, including Ryan Feldman, the former Live at the Bike producer.

“Yesterday, we lost a great member of the LA poker community. Ramsey was beloved by everyone who knew him. He was young and full of energy and love. Please pray for his family and friends at this difficult time,” Feldman, who now runs the competing Hustler Casino Live show, tweeted on Tuesday.

Poker vlogger Andrew Neeme also tweeted out some love to his friend on social media. The World Poker Tour ambassador shared a video of a bad beat he lost on Live at the Bike against Ramsey a few years ago.

“Very sad to hear that we lost Ramsey. So fun loving, warm, and such a supportive dude who’d tell you how much he loved you. Think he hated folding even more than me. Took us out in DTLA for some memorable nights involving arcade bars & high speed electric bikes. He’ll be missed,” Neeme wrote.

Andy “Stacks” Tsai, a long-time regular in the high stakes games on Live at the Bike, also shared some sentiments about his late friend on Twitter. He praised Ramsey for doing “things out of kindness, asking for nothing,” and said he “could tell him anything and he gave me tough love, not just what I wanted to hear.”

Many other current and former players from Live at the Bike such as “Israeli Ron” chimed in to send condolences and share stories about the late Ramsey Doumani.

Ramsey’s sister, Stephanie, paid tribute to her brother in a heartfelt Facebook post.

“With a very heavy heart, I am sharing the news that my brother, Ramsey Doumani, has passed away. We in the family – me, my parents, uncles and aunts, cousins – are devastated and already miss him terribly. But we also know that Ramsey, so full of life, wouldn’t want us to be sad but instead remember him for all the good times. We will post more information once arrangements have been made,” she posted.

Vikenty Shegal Can’t Fade Two Big Slicks

Vikenty Shegal
Vikenty Shegal

On Day 1c in Level 8 (600/1,200/1,200), a three-way all-in preflop hand took place. In it, Daniel Thomas was all in for 27,500, Vikenty Shegal for 51,100, while Elanit Hasas had the covering stack with approximately 55,000.

Elanit Hasas: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Vikenty Shegal: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Daniel Thomas: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}

Shegal was up against two opponents holding Big Slick, and she was just looking to hold to win a big pot. The {10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop was safe enough, while the {j-Spades} turn actually improved her to a set. All she needed to do was dodge a queen on the river to survive, but that was easier said than done as the {q-Clubs} peeled off. With that, Shegal hit the rail in brutal river fashion.

Aces Versus Aces

On Day 2 in Level 19 (10,000/15,000/15,000), there was a flop of {j-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Spades} when Ron Hunt and Huifang Zhang got it all in.

Huifang Zhang: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Ron Hunt: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

Both players held pocket aces, but Hunt was free rolling with the spade. He made the flush after the dealer burned and turned the {2-Spades}, and after the meaningless {4-Hearts} was put out on the river, Hunt doubled to 325,000 while Zhang was left with just 70,000.

That hand occurred with 210 players remaining, and Zhang managed to survive a bit longer off her short stack, eventually busting in 178th place for $3,370.

Former PokerNews Reporter Dispatches Poker Pro

Ben Ludlow
Ben Ludlow

It’s not every day a former PokerNews reporter has the opportunity to compete against the poker pros they once reported on. However, it happened on Day 2 in Level 21 (15,000/25,000/25,000) between former reporter Ben Ludlow took on Kristen Foxen.

Ther latter raised all in for 290,000 from the hijack holding the {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and Ludlow called from the big blind after looking down at the superior {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}.

The better hand held after the board ran out {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{3-Clubs}. Ludlow won with aces and jacks to send Foxen to the rail in 159th place for $3,670.

An Ace from Space

Jeremy Felicetti
Jeremy Felicetti

Also on Day 2, albeit in Level 25 (30,000/60,000/60,000), a board showed {q-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} and there was roughly 900,000 in the pot when Daniel Yu bet 400,000 from the small blind. Jeremy Felicetti responded by moving all in from the button for 2.46 million and Yu called.

Jeremy Felicetti: {a-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
Daniel Yu: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}

Felicetti had two pair but was behind as Yu had a set. Felicetti needed either a four or ace on the river to survive, and he got there when the {a-Diamonds} spiked to fill him up!

Flush Over Flush Late

Tom Middleton
Tom Middleton

On Day 3 with just 11 players remaining in Level 32 (150,000/300,000/300,000), Lara Eisenberg raised to 600,000 under the gun and Matt Hunt called out of the cutoff. Tom Middleton came along from the big blind and it was three-way action to the {q-Spades}{j-Spades}{2-Spades} flop.

Middleton checked, as did Eisenberg, and Hunt bet 500,000. Middleton called and Eisenberg woke up with a check-raise to 2 million. Hunt called and then Middleton hit the tank for a few minutes before jamming all in for 7.75 million. Eisenberg moved all in over the top for 9.725 million and Hunt took four minutes before folding.

Tom Middleton: {10-Spades}{4-Spades}
Lara Eisenberg: {a-Spades}{9-Spades}

Middleton was on the bad end of the flopped flush-over-flush cooler, and he was eliminated after the {6-Spades} turn and {3-Diamonds} river completed the board. Middleton was eliminated from the tournament in 11th place for $56,500 while Eisenberg went on to make the final table.

Cordish Reveals Plans for $1.4bn Virginia Casino Resort

People looking over plans

Certain contingencies in place

The Cordish Companies has revealed its plans to create a $1.4bn casino resort in the Virginia city of Petersburg. The Petersburg City Council unanimously voted on Tuesday night to choose Cordish as the company to develop a casino resort in the area. It would be a three-phase project and span an 80-acre site in the economically struggling region.

General Assembly has to give the city the green light to offer casino gambling

City Manager John March Altman did caution that it still isn’t a done deal despite the vote. Contingencies are in place relating to the agreement, including big one: the Virginia General Assembly has to give the city the green light to offer casino gambling. Cordish has also said that the project will be dependent on the nearby city of Richmond not getting a casino.

Selection process and initial plans

Cordish made a presentation at the City Council meeting, outlining its plans for the prospective casino project. Cordish chief operating officer Zed Smith believes that it is a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” for the city. The city’s relationship with Cordish dates back about two months when a closed meeting led to the approval of a resolution to explore a potential partnership with the Baltimore-based casino company to create a destination casino resort.

preferable partner due to its track record of constructing and operating casinos in cities

The council got The Speller Consulting Group to look at prospective casino operator partnerships and the proposed casino site. The consultancy group considered five different casino companies in total. Cordish is the preferable partner due to its track record of constructing and operating casinos in cities like Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Pittsburgh.

As part of Cordish’s plans for Petersburg, the initial phase of the project would see the development of a 230,000 square-foot casino and a 200-room hotel. The construction process would require about two years. Work could begin as soon as the state approves Petersburg for casino gaming. A vote would also need to take place in November among the Petersburg public to get the final green light.

A battle between Richmond and Petersburg

Cordish had been in the running to develop a casino resort in nearby Richmond last year. The people of Richmond ultimately voted against allowing a casino to go ahead in the city. City officials were looking to try again and hold another vote last month, but the state blocked the move. Instead, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission studied the feasibility of a Petersburg casino resort.

The study was completed and released in October, stating that both Petersburg and Richmond could support casinos at the same time. The study estimated that a Petersburg casino could generate $204m in gaming revenue in 2028, as well as create approximately 1,300 jobs. The revenue and job projections would drop if Richmond is also able to proceed with a casino project. Officials in Petersburg are battling against Richmond getting a second bite of the apple.

US Commercial Gaming Revenue Hits $5.3bn in October, Says AGA

US Commercial Gaming Revenue Hits $5.3bn in October, Says AGA

The national trade group for the US casino industry, the American Gaming Association (AGA), released its latest commercial gaming revenue report. AGA’s Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker provided insight into the performance of operators and showed significant growth in revenue in October.

Commercial Gaming Revenue Increases, a New Report Reveals

The overall commercial gaming revenue in October hit $5.29 billion. This result, when compared to the same period in October 2021, marked an increase of 10.5%. What’s more, the result from October marked the second-best gaming revenue result falling behind only to the $5.35 billion record set in March this year.

Besides a year-over-year growth, the commercial revenue result from October boosted the overall results for the whole year. In fact, AGA revealed that the total commercial revenue in the last ten months hit $49.85 billion, representing a significant increase of 14.7% when compared to the corresponding period in 2021.

A further breakdown provided by the Association reveals that slot GGR for the first ten months this year hit $28.6 billion, marking an increase of 5.8%, while table games GGR was up 16.5% to $8.3 billion. On the other hand, for the first ten months this year, iGaming revenue increased by a solid 38.1% to $4.08 billion.

But without any doubt, the biggest growth this year was in terms of sports betting revenue. The AGA’s report reveals that for the first ten months this year, sports betting GGR hit $5.76 billion, marking a whopping 77.9% growth when compared to the same period in 2021.

As 2022 draws to a close, the gaming industry remains on track for another record-setting year. Over the first ten months, commercial gaming revenue totaled $49.85 billion, 14.7 percent ahead of the same 10-month period in 2021,

Casino Guru, Gordon Moody to Release a Safer Gambling Course

Casino Guru, Gordon Moody to Release a Safer Gambling Course

Casino Guru, the biggest casino database in the world, has teamed up with the British safer gambling charity Gordon Moody. The two parties will join forces, just as suggested by GambleAware, to deliver a new interactive safer gambling course.

Casino Guru and Gordon Moody Teamed Up for a New Course

Casino Guru and Gordon Moody will leverage their expertise to create a new program that will promote safer gambling by familiarizing people with the benefits of betting responsibly. The best part about the program is that it would be completely free, which would allow it to reach more people.

The course covers everything that should be known about safer gambling. It talks about the basics, as well as the advanced stuff, such as the usage of AI for spotting irregular gambling patterns that often signpost problem gambling. The new course is Casino Guru and Gordon Moody’s way of delivering valuable knowledge to customers and operators alike.

The course teaches the value of responsible gambling and how it benefits sustainability. As such, it is targeted toward industry professionals but also contains valuable information that customers and industry enthusiasts might be interested to know.

Gambling operators can further expand the information contained in the free course and use Gordon Moody’s learning platforms to meet the demands of developing market segments.

The new course is a part of Casino Guru’s Casino Guru Academy, the casino database’s in-house program for promoting a better understanding of gambling, the gambling industry and responsible wagering. The new course is notably the third one Casino Guru has worked on. Previously, the company released two other courses, one dedicated to customer support and one concerning casino bonuses.

United Against Problem Gambling and Harm

This is not the first safer gambling initiative that the involved parties have undertaken. Gordon Moody recently released its own E-Learning platform and Virtual Classroom. Casino Guru, on the other hand, is currently working on a Global Self-exclusion Initiative, attesting to its commitment to safer gambling.

The two companies’ collaboration reflects GambleAware’s call for unity from earlier this year when the charity proposed that industry veterans should join their forces in the battle against gambling harm.

Casino Guru’s safer and sustainable gambling lead, Simon Vincze, spoke about the new course. He said that his team is delighted to join forces with Gordon Moody, a charity with decades of experience in the sector. Vincze reaffirmed his company’s intention of providing customers and operators alike with content of value.

All of our Academy courses are created with the intention of giving our participants the maximum possible value within a limited time frame.

Simon Vincze, safer and sustainable gambling lead, Casino Guru

In October, Casino Guru promised to award the most responsible companies in the sector.

Hustler Casino Live Poker Scandal Investigation Finds ‘No Evidence of Wrongdoing’

Hustler Casino Live Poker Scandal Investigation Finds 'No Evidence of Wrongdoing'

More than two months following the infamous jack-four hand on Hustler Casino Live, a third-party investigation has concluded that “no evidence of wrongdoing” took place.

During a Sept. 29 live-stream, Robbi Jade Lew, a recreational player, made one of the most confusing calls with jack-high on the turn facing a $105,000 all in wager from Garrett Adelstein. The call was technically correct as it was the best hand — Adelstein was on a draw with eight-high — but accusations of cheating turned the hand into one of the most insane moments in poker history.

Adelstein immediately accused his opponent of cheating, and conspiracy theories began flying. Some suggested Lew had conspired with another player in the game, Jacob “Rip” Chavez. But, as the investigation into the matter concluded, there simply never was definitive proof, only suspicion.

Poker Cheating Investigation Findings

Garrett Adelstein
Garrett Adelstein

High Stakes Poker Productions, the production company for Hustler Casino Live, released a detailed report of its findings on Wednesday, which can be viewed here. For the “tl;dr” crowd, they also submitted a condensed version of the report here.

Hustler Casino Live co-owners Ryan Feldman and Nick Vertucci hired Bulletproof, a third-party GLI company, to audit the live-stream operations and procedures. Vertucci, on his podcast The Nick Vertucci Show, made it clear that he welcomed an unbiased investigation into everyone working for HCL, including himself.

“Bulletproof was given complete access to Hustler Casino Live facilities, including its production room, the poker table, stage, and all equipment used in producing the show,” the final report read.

The biggest takeaway from the report was the overall conclusion, which stated that the “investigation found no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing in the J4 hand, or any other hand played that night.”

Other findings from the investigation include the Deckmate automatic shuffle machine, which sparked some conspiracy theories on social media. In the report, the cybersecurity investigators determined that the “Deckmate shuffling machine is secure and cannot be compromised.”

“It’s extremely unlikely that any card-reading device stored in a water bottle, jewelry or object on the table could have intercepted a card signal,” the investigation report claims.

Hustler Casino Live to Improve Game Security

Nick Vertucci Hustler Casino Live
Hustler Casino Live co-founder Nick Vertucci.

Although the investigation determined that there is no evidence of cheating on Sept. 29, Hustler Casino Live has vowed to take steps to further ensure game security. Since the incident, the world’s most popular live-streamed poker show has already begun making changes, according to the report, starting with reconfiguring the production room so that only one monitor displays hole cards.

A new wall and door were installed in the production room, which is kept locked and closed during live-streams. Only High Stakes Poker Productions employees have access to the room, and employees of Hustler Casino cannot enter.

One other major area of concern among those who question the live-stream security of Hustler Casino Live is that Vertucci admitted he didn’t previously conduct background checks of his employees. This became an issue when production team staffer Bryan Sagbigsal was found to have stolen $15,000 in casino chips from Lew’s stack following the Sept. 29 show.

Sagbigsal, 25, has a prior criminal history, which caused many poker players to question why he was ever hired in the first place. Lew has since pushed for charges to be filed and the Gardena Police Department has issued a warrant for his arrest on felony theft.

Per the investigation report into the jack-four saga, High Stakes Poker Productions will now conduct pre-employment background checks on “all prospective employees.”

Robbi Jade Lew Issues Statement

Robbi Jade Lew poker

PokerNews reached out to Lew for comment on the investigation report. She has always denied any wrongdoing and was pleased with the outcome.

“I had full faith and confidence in what the investigation would reveal and in Nick Vertucci, Ryan Feldman, and HCL regarding the thoroughness of the investigation that was undertaken,” Lew said.

“As you can imagine, I am relieved and looking forward to finally putting this behind me. I cannot stress enough how incredibly grateful I am to all of my supporters and friends worldwide who have stuck with me through this grueling process. You have all been my strength when I needed it most.

I’m excited for the next chapter … and any positive changes this incident may implement in the gaming industry! Now it’s time to go play poker.”

Adelstein, who has long been one of the most popular high-stakes players in the game, has mostly avoided commenting on the incident outside of the occasional statement reiterating his belief that Lew cheated. He has yet to issue a public statement on the investigation’s final report.

The Hustler Casino Live and Live at the Bike regular hasn’t appeared on any stream since the incident and it’s unclear if and when he will return to action. Lew, however, hinted to PokerNews earlier this week that a return to HCL may soon be in the works.

Betway Consolidates South African Cricket Offerings with SA20 Deal

Betway Consolidates South African Cricket Offerings with SA20 Deal

Betting brand Betway will become the inaugural title sponsor of SA20- South Africa’s newest T20 cricket league. The operator gains the rights to full brand coverage of the tournament, launching on 10 January 2023. It will initially run for four weeks, featuring 33 matches between several of the region’s most high-profile teams.

The African sports betting market has long been one of Betway’s priorities. The region’s gambling industry is rapidly expanding, drawing the interest of many high-profile operators. Betway has established a solid foothold in South Africa, paving the way for several of its partners into the untapped market.

The company has found particular success with the country’s Cricket leagues. Last year, Betway became the title sponsor of South Africa’s T20 Challenge cricket tournament, rebranding the contest’s name to the Betway T20 Challenge. The operator’s initiative appears to have been successful, as it is now engaging with another high-profile South African Cricket league.

Betway’s new deal with T20 remains roughly the same as last year’s sponsorship. The new tournament will officially be named the Betway SA20, setting the stage for a prosperous multi-year partnership. The operator solidifies its dominating position in the Cricket scene while ensuring that the engaging sports content reaches a sizable worldwide audience. Betway SA20 already has a 10-year broadcast deal with Indian sports network ViacomSports 18, giving the country’s sizeable cricket fan base access to a novel and exciting experience.

Betway CEO Anthony Werkman noted that the sponsorship was a significant step towards the company’s goal to become the leading sportsbook for cricket content.

We are delighted to see the Betway brand continue to showcase its long-standing commitment to the sport with another top-tier sponsorship.

Anthony Werkman, Betway CEO

Werkman added that the tournament’s launch was already causing significant interest worldwide, expressing excitement to become its inaugural title sponsor.

SA20 Aims to Bolster Its Global Reach

The partnership also garnered favorable reactions in South Africa, as SA20 League commissioner Graeme Smith welcomed Betway to the new T20 cricket league’s growing list of partners, lauding their global reach and passion for the sport.

We look forward to seeing the Betway SA20 scale new markets and audiences globally.

Graeme Smith, SA20 League commissioner

The first SA20 season will feature six privately-owned teams with 102 local and international players competing in 33 matches. The league has already expressed its intention to become the second-largest in the world. Although still unable to compete with India, South Africa remains a substantial foothold for professional cricket, hopefully leading to new immersive, inclusive, and thrilling experiences.
