Eric Persson Bluffs JRB and Flips Him the Bird on High Stakes Poker

Eric Persson Bluffs JRB and Flips Him the Bird on High Stakes Poker

Eric Persson pulled off a brilliant bluff against Jean-Robert Bellande during the newest High Stakes Poker episode, and made sure his opponent knew just how proud he was of the play.

Episode 12 of Season 10 aired on PokerGO Tuesday night, and it provided some juicy hands, none more so than the pot we just mentioned and will explain in further detail in just a bit.

Seated at the table were the same high rollers as last week — Persson, Bellande, Daniel Negreanu, Jennifer Tilly, Stanley Choi, and Andrew Robl, and Stanley Tang.

High Stakes Poker will have a special episode on Thursday at 3 p.m. PT. For the first time in the iconic poker show’s history, PokerGO will live-stream the action and fans can watch every hand, not just the regular edited-for-TV version.

There were some massive stacks in action, especially Robl, who had well over $1 million in front of him. During the middle of the episode, the stacks were as follows:

Player Stack
Andrew Robl $1,288,000
Eric Persson $495,400
Jean-Robert Bellande $455,900
Stanley Choi $433,600
Daniel Negreanu $175,900
Stanley Tang $134,000
Jennifer Tilly $127,200

On the very first hand, with an $800 straddle on, Tilly raised it to $4,000 from a late position with 42 before Bellande, on the button with Q5 bumped it up to $16,000. That didn’t turn out to be a profitable decision as Choi, the straddle, woke up with KK and wasn’t messing around. He raised it to $55,000, which forced everyone off the pot.

Shortly after, the action picked up with the double straddle on. Action folded around to Tang in the big blind, and he opted to raise it up to $6,000 with 98. Persson called with A2 in the first straddle, as did Choi in the second straddle with 76.

The flop came out 1062, a little something intriguing for everyone. Tang led for $11,000 with a flush and straight draw before Persson, who had nothing but bottom pair, went for the aggressive raise to $31,000. Choi then three-bet it to $60,000 and that was the end of that pot.

JRB Runs Hot on High Stakes Poker

Poker Player Loves His Middle Finger

Batman has an indestructible car. Superman has a cape. Tom Brady has a golden arm. Eric Persson has a middle finger. Two of them, actually. In 2022, during a heads-up tournament on PokerGO, the poker player flipped Phil Hellmuth the bird during an argument.

That was the mainstream poker audience’s introduction to Persson, the Tony G of his time, if you will. He has since become a colorful character and you either love him or hate him. On Episode 12 of High Stakes Poker, he made quite a play and then let the birds fly again.

In another double straddled pot, Robl began the action by raising to $5,000 with KQ. Bellande just called with AK on the button. Persson called with A9 in the big blind, and Tilly came along with 33 in the first straddle.

The flop was 56A and, after action folded to the button, Bellande bet $12,000 with top-top. Only Persson made the call. When the 10 appeared on the turn, the action went check, bet $30,000, call. And then when the 8 on the river didn’t improve either player’s hand, Persson again checked, but his opponent didn’t take his foot off the gas and fired out another wager, this time for $65,000.

At this point it was likely Persson could only beat a bluff, so he decided to turn his top pair hand into a bluff and raised it up to $265,000. Bellande went into the tank before exposing his superior hand.

“I’m going to fold this, but quickly throw that hand in the muck because I don’t want to see it,” Bellande pleaded to Persson.

Persson didn’t oblige and proudly turned over his weaker ace hand. He then proceeded to let JRB know just how much he appreciated the fold via the double bird.

The double straddle was once again on in this next hand, which Tang, who founded the DoorDash app and will be competing in the upcoming $1 million cash game hosted by Hustler Casino Live, raised to $4,000 from an early position with K9 before Persson three-bet to $14,000 in late position with QQ.

Everyone folded except Tang, who called to see a flop of 3A9, not exactly what either player had dreamed of hitting preflop. Both players checked to the J turn. Persson bet $10,000 and received a call. The river was an uneventful 6. They checked it around and Persson took down the $51,000 pot.

Will Kassouf Denies Leaving Poker Table with Chips from Pot He Lost

Will Kassouf Denies Leaving Poker Table with Chips from Pot He Lost

On Tuesday’s Doug Polk Podcast, Will Kassouf denied allegations that he pocketed the chips he lost in an all-in pot during a low-stakes pot-limit Omaha cash game at the 2023 Irish Open.

Earlier this month, Leo Worthington-Leese posted a video on social media sharing a second-hand story about Kasssouf he was told by a friend in the aforementioned cash game.

In that story, which made its way around poker Twitter, Worthington-Leese, who competed in the Irish Open, claimed he was told that Kassouf lost his entire stack in a three-way pot — about 300 euros — and then proceeded to take his chips with him out of the card room instead of paying off the bet.

Kassouf Tells a Different Story to Polk

Kassouf, known for his “speech play” which helped him finish 17th in the 2016 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, appeared on Doug Polk’s podcast to set the record straight on what went down during the Irish Open. Or, at least, give his side of a he-said-she-said story, and it was quite different from the one Worthington-Leese told.

As the poker player explained in the hour-long conversation with Polk, there were no cameras in the cash game area, so there is no video to prove the allegations against him.

According to Kassouf, he didn’t take off with the money he lost and suggested that the dealer may have miscounted the pot instead.

“I was sitting right next to the dealer, my chips were in the pot,” Kassouf claimed. “There was no issue at the time.”

Kassouf then continued to claim “they knew I didn’t run out of the poker room,” referring to those who made the accusations. He said he remained in the area for a few minutes chatting it up with friends at other tables after the hand he lost.

Check out Kassouf’s Player Profile on PokerNews here

His account of the incident then shifted to Keith Littlewood, who won part of the pot. Littlewood wrote on Twitter following Worthington-Leese’s accusations confirming he was shorted in the pot. But he also said that “no one saw him take the chips but when the dealer came to pull in the chips his stack was gone.”

According to Kassouf, his chips were already in the pot and he claims it was likely the dealer simply miscounted the size of the pot. Littleton’s statement to PokerNews contradicts much of Kassouf’s interview with Polk.

“The dealer then counted seat 4’s stack and gave him the €725 from mine (a quarter of the pot),” Littleton said. “Then [the dealer] went to do the main pot, and just the blinds and antes were there. Kassouf’s stack had disappeared, and so had Kassouf. Everyone was asking where Will’s stack was. The dealer called the floor, who then got the security guards to go and find him. He had disappeared without a trace.”

“Rumors and speculation with no evidence or proof whatsoever.”

Kassouf said he exited the room like any normal day a poker player busts from a cash game. Per his comments on Polk’s podcast, he engaged in some banter with friends and then left, and it wasn’t until the next morning before he’d discovered there was a controversy brewing.

“My chips were in the middle on the turn. My chips were in the middle by the dealer. I was sitting in Seat 1. Seat 2 re-potted it, Seat 4 went all in, and we all agreed to run it twice. My chips were in the middle. I had no more chips in front of me or behind. Nobody saw me take chips off the table because I didn’t take chips off the table,” Kassouf stated.

Later on in the interview, Kassouf referred to the allegations against him as “rumors and speculation with no evidence or proof whatsoever.” He then reiterated that he didn’t bolt out of the card room with chips.

“I would never do anything to jeopardize my poker career, or try to take chips from the table, be it a cash game or a tournament,” Kassouf told Polk. “I’ll never cheat in a game I love so much. So these are false allegations that are completely made up based on rumor and hearsay.”

Previous Controversies

This wasn’t the first time Kassouf found himself in the middle of a controversy. During the 2016 WSOP Main Event, captured on ESPN’s broadcast, the British poker pro received a one-round penalty for repeatedly talking about the contents of his hand in a pot against Stacy Matuson.

As the final table approached, he memorably busted with pocket kings against the pocket aces of Griffin Benger, who was fed up with Kassouf’s speech play and constant tanking.

“Check your privilege,” an irritated Benger told Kassouf during the hand in question.

Kassouf told Polk the incident was blown out of proportion and that his reasoning for tanking before moving all in with pocket kings was because he was genuinely concerned he was up against aces.

But there was another alleged scandal involving Kassouf that he had to address on Polk’s podcast. In 2018, he lost his Grosvenor sponsorship after allegations were made that he palmed a $100 casino chip from a roulette table and was banned from the property.

His explanation for what went down was that there was a $100 chip in front of him following a spin at the roulette table, which he assumed was his.

“No one said anything to me at the time,” he claims. “We carried on playing, we carried on betting on other numbers.”

Kassouf then said he was drunk having a good time with friends, and then later at the bar, his friend approached him and informed him the chip in question was actually his. According to Kassouf, he agreed with his friend and paid him back, and that was that.

One thing is certain, and that is controversy seems to find Will Kassouf every few years.

Marian Dumitrache Wins the €250 APAT Irish Amateur Poker Championship

Marian Dumitrache

The APAT Irish Amateur Poker Championship was part of the 2023 Irish Open, and saw 214 unique players buy in for €250 and create a €45,903 prize pool. That €250 investment swelled to all but four figures for the nine finalists, with Darren McGuinness‘ ninth-place finish coming with €990.

The final table was a cosmopolitan affair with six countries represented. Greek grinder Stergios Alexandrakis (€1,200), Michael Mitrione (€1,640) of Australia, and Romanian Apostol Beg (€2,245) joined the aforementioned McGuinness on the rail.

Fifth place and €2,955 went to another Irishman in Kevin Duffy before American Oliver Gayko (€3,735) fell in fourth, bursting the medal bubble. Five Super Tips to Help Poker Players Deal with Variance and Downswings

Five Super Tips to Help Poker Players Deal with Variance and Downswings

The folks at 888poker are back once again with more poker strategy tips, with this article focusing on the dreaded aspect of variance in poker and how to cope when the cards aren’t falling in your favour.

Ambassador Ian Simpson notes, “You just have to accept that variance is a part of the game, this is why this wonderful game exists. That’s why we can make money from it.”

Stream Team member Nick Eastwood points out, “Every single player, even the most winning players around, all go through bad stretches of luck in their poker careers.”

So as variance in poker is unavoidable, it would be wise to take some time to watch the video below and mentally jot down these top tips on how to deal with it.

What is Variance in Poker?

In poker, variance refers to the natural statistical fluctuations or “ups and downs” that can occur in short-term results due to luck. Variance can cause a player to experience periods of both winning and losing, even if they are playing well or poorly.

For example, a player may be dealt a strong hand like pocket aces, which is obviously the best hand they can you be dealt. However, due to variance, they may still lose the hand if their opponent gets lucky and hits a better hand on the flop, turn, or river.

In essence, variance is the difference between expected results and actual results over a certain period of time. While skilled players can make decisions that will increase their long-term win rate, in the short-term, variance can have a significant impact on their results.

Why is There Variance in Poker?

Variance is an inherent part of poker because the game involves a significant element of luck. Even if a player makes the best decisions possible, they can still experience positive or negative outcomes due to the randomness of the cards. The cards are dealt randomly, and even the best players can’t control which cards will come next.

Over the long run, luck will tend to even out, and skilful players who consistently make good decisions will typically come out ahead. Understanding and managing variance is an important aspect of being a successful poker player.

How to Deal with Variance in Poker

Dealing with variance in poker can be challenging, but there are several strategies that players can use to manage its effects:

  1. Focus on the long term: Variance is a natural part of poker, and it can be tempting to get frustrated or demoralized during a downswing. However, it’s important to remember that skilful players will ultimately win out in the long run. Keep your focus on making good decisions and playing solid poker, and trust that your results will improve over time.
  2. Manage your bankroll: Variance can be especially damaging to your bankroll if you’re not properly prepared. Make sure you have enough money set aside to weather a downswing, and be willing to move down in stakes if necessary.
  3. Stay disciplined: In the face of variance, it can be tempting to make impulsive decisions or to play recklessly in an attempt to make up for losses. However, this can often lead to further losses. Stick to your usual strategy, and resist the urge to make drastic changes in response to short-term results.
  4. Have a solid network: Poker can be a solitary game, but it can be helpful to seek support from other players or a poker community. Sharing your experiences and challenges with others can provide a sense of perspective and support during periods of negative variance. Reviewing your hand histories with your network can help you identify areas of your game that may contribute to negative variance. Having an extra pair of eyes to help look for patterns in your losses will allow you to analyze better whether any adjustments to your strategy are needed.
  5. Take breaks: If you’re feeling frustrated or stressed due to a run of bad luck, it can be helpful to take a break from the game. Step away from the table for a while, clear your head, and come back with a fresh perspective.

Poker Player Nate Silver Surprisingly Out at FiveThirtyEight Amid Disney Layoffs

Poker Player Nate Silver Surprisingly Out at FiveThirtyEight Amid Disney Layoffs

Following the heavily reported Disney layoffs, political polling journalist Nate Silver might soon have more free time to play poker.

FiveThirtyEight (or 538) is the site founded in 2008 by Silver, who had previously played limit hold’em online for a living. In 2013, he sold his sports and political analytics website to ESPN (later taken over by ABC News) and then was retained as the editor-in-chief.

The data-driven journalist told his co-workers via a Slack message that he forecasted that he’ll be gone from 538 “soon.” As part of the second round of layoffs at Disney, ESPN’s parent company, Silver’s contract isn’t expected to be renewed.

Check out PokerNews’ Player Profile on Nate Silver here

What’s Going on at Disney and FiveThirtyEight?

ABC News, also a Disney-owned business, will retain FiveThirtyEight but will make some wholesale changes to the site and brand.

“ABC News remains dedicated to data journalism with a core focus on politics, the economy and enterprise reporting — this streamlined structure will allow us to be more closely aligned with our priorities for the 2024 election and beyond,” an ABC News spokesperson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We are grateful for the invaluable contributions of the team members who will be departing the organization and know they will continue to make an important impact on the future of journalism.”

Silver rose to political fame in 2008 when he correctly predicted the outcome of all 50 states during the presidential election. As such, FiveThirtyEight became the place to go for data-driven polling analysis for upcoming US elections, along with sporting events.

But he was heavily criticized in 2016 when his polling model gave Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump just a 30% chance of beating out Hillary Clinton, the heavily favored Democrat. Trump went on to win and it caused some — not just Republicans — to question if his model was outdated. That said, the FiveThirtyEight model gave Trump a significantly higher chance of winning than most mainstream news and polling sources. The New York Times, for example, forecasted Clinton at 91% to win.

Silver, a liberal-leaning journalist, has taken heat from both sides of the political aisle. But the 538 website still has a large audience and generates heavy traffic. The site’s founder shared his disappointment about the layoff on social media.

Walt Disney Co as a whole is worth nearly $180 billion and is far more than just a theme park. The company owns major businesses such as ABC News, ESPN, Hulu, Disney+, National Geographic, and even the rights to the Star Wars and Marvel Entertainment.

Silver’s upcoming layoff is one of over 7,000 job-cuts across the board within the Disney business as a cost-cutting measure. The layoffs have included some senior executives at both ABC News and ESPN, along with lower wage employees at the Disney theme parks and elsewhere.

What’s Next for Nate Silver?

Silver hasn’t publicly announced his plans for post-538, if he’s made any yet. Given his stature within the mainstream political media, he’ll certainly have some options within that industry on the table.

Or, perhaps he’ll decide to devote more time to poker, a game he’s passionate about. During the early years of the poker boom era in the 2000s, Silver played limit hold’em online for a living.

He never gave up the game permanently and has played quite frequently the past couple of years in major events such as the World Poker Tour (WPT) and World Series of Poker (WSOP).

In March, he took fourth place for $99,750 in a $10,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament at the 2023 U.S. Poker Open and finished runner-up for $140,600 at the 2022 Poker Masters in a separate $10k NLH event.

According to Hendon Mob, Silver has over $600,000 in live tournament cashes. He’s also been playing some cash game poker recently, including taking a five-figure loss on live-stream at The Lodge Card Club in Texas back in February.

Every Past PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo Main Event Champion

Every Past PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo Main Event Champion

The 2023 edition of the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte Carlo festival runs from April 26 through May 6 at the luxurious Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort. You already know that PokerNews is bringing you live and exclusive coverage from seven of the biggest EPT Monte Carlo events, including the prestigious Main Event, the tournament every player wants to win.

Although every EPT Main Event is special, the Monte Carlo Main Event has something else about it. For years, EPT Monte Carlo served as the tour’s Grand Final. Even after having that title removed, EPT Monte Carlo is still a must-play on the high-stakes live poker calendar.

Some of poker’s most recognizable faces and names have returned home from a trip to Monaco with the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event trophy in tow. Fourteen poker stars have written their names in the EPT’s history books under the heading EPT Monte Carlo Main Event champion. Here are those 14 superstars.

Rob Hollink
Rob Hollink in 2005

The Netherlands’ Rob Hollink triumphed in the inaugural EPT Monte Carlo Main Event back in 2005, when the Main Event commanded a €10,000 buy-in. Some 211 players entered, including the likes of Eugene Katchalov, Gus Hansen, and eventual runner-up Brandon Schaefer. Hollink was the last player standing; he took home €635,000 for his efforts.

Jeff Williams

Jeff Williams
Jeff Williams

Known as “yellowsub86” online at PokerStars, Jeff Williams became the youngest-ever EPT champion when he came out on top of a 298-strong field in the 2006 edition of the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event. The EPT was still in its infancy in 2006, but a host of elite players were present and correct for this €10,000 buy-in affair.

Williams, who won his seat online at PokerStars, took home €900,000 after defeating British player Arshad Hussain heads-up.

Gavin Griffin

Gavin Griffin became a millionaire overnight when he won the 2007 EPT Monte Carlo Main Event. Griffin has already become the youngest-ever winner of a World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet three years prior to his EPT Monte Carlo victory, and later went on to complete live poker’s Triple Crown.

Griffin got his hands on €1,825,010 after defeating Marc Karam, who finished fourth in this event the previous year, heads-up.

Glen Chorny

Griffin’s haul in 2007 only remained the biggest-ever prize on the EPT for 12 months because Glen Chorny‘s victory in 2008 netted the Canadian €2,020,000. Some 842 players ponied up €10,600, and Chorny outlasted them all. Although Chorny never managed to relive that epic victory, he is still active online today, usually around the time of the WSOP.

Pieter de Korver

Dutchman Pieter de Korver still holds the record for the largest EPT Monte Carlo Main Event score of all-time, thanks to collecting €2,300,000, despite becoming the tournament’s champion in 2009.

De Korver enjoyed several six-figure scores in the few years after his EPT Monte Carlo victory, including winning a $1,100 side event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, a €1,100 EPT Berlin Cup, and finishing as runner-up in the 2012 Master Classics of Poker in Amsterdam.

Nicolas Chouity

Nicolas Chouity became Lebanon’s first EPT Main Event champion in 2010 after navigating his way through 847 opponents and banking €1,700,000. Chouity’s victory was made more impressive by the long list of stellar opponents he faced on his way to clinching the trophy.

Such luminaries as Davidi Kitai, Moritz Kranich, David Peters, Lex Veldhuis, Sami Kelopuro, and Andrew Chen were all left in Chouity’s wake.

Mohsin Charania

Mohsin Charania‘s victory in the 2012 EPT Monte Carlo Main Event was the first prong of live poker’s Triple Crown. Charania overcame 664 opponents on his way to collecting €1,350,000. A year later, he won a World Poker Tour (WPT) title, then another in 2014, before clinching a WSOP bracelet in 2017.

Charania stepped away from poker when COVID-19 hit but still dips his toes into the game’s waters.

Steve O’Dwyer won the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event title in 2013, after battling through one of the toughest final tables ever assembled.

Freddy Deeb, Grant Levy, Jason Mercier, Noah Schwartz, Jake Cody, Daniel Negreanu, Johnny Lodden, and Andrew Pantling were present and correct, but none of them had an answer for O’Dwyer, who reeled in a €1,224,000 score and the all-important winner’s trophy.

Italian Antonio Buonanno left nothing at the table when he finally defeated Jack Salter heads-up in the 2014 edition of this incredible tournament. The final table spanned a stamina-sapping 18 hours, and took more than 300 hands to conclude. Having a €1,240,000 pot of gold at the end of the rainbow helped push the players through the tiredness.

Spain’s Adrian Mateos was already making a name for himself before winning the 2014 EPT Monte Carlo Main Event because he had taken down the WSOP Europe Main Event a year earlier. The €1,082,000 Mateos won was his second seven-figure live score. He now has eight of them to his name.

Jan Bendik

Slovakian Jan Bendik was a regular on the EPT circuit before entering the 2016 EPT Monte Carlo Main Event alongside 1,097 others, which is still the best-attended EPT Monte Carlo Main Event today. Bendik helped himself to a €961,800 prize after defeating Frenchman Adrien Allain heads-up in what was the first time this tournament featured a €5,300 buy-in.

Nicolas Dumont

The EPT Monte Carlo Main Event took a brief one-year hiatus before returning in 2018, when 775 players turned out in force. Parisian Nicolas Dumont is the name next to the word champion. Dumont took home €712,000 for his victory, which came after the likes of Ole Schemion, Patrik Antonius, and David Peters busted at the star-studded final table.

Manig Loeser

Germany superstar Manig Loeser became the 2019 EPT Monte Carlo Main Event champion, and captured a €603,777 prize after a three-handed deal with Wei Huang and Viktor Katzenberger. All eyes were on Ryan Riess at the final table because the former WSOP Main Event champion could have completed the Triple Crown but it wasn’t meant to be for the American.

Expect to see Loeser’s name in this year’s updates after he won a €550 side event and final tables the €25,000 High Roller in 2022.

Marcelo Simoes Mesqueu

COVID-19 put paid to EPT Monte Carlo from 2020-21, but it returned with a bang, with 1,073 players buying into the 2022 edition. Marcelo Simoes Mesqueu, a high-volume grinder in his native Brazil, became the first Brazilian EPT Main Event champion, and will almost certainly be in Monaco in an attempt to defend his title.

It seems like the WSOP’s management team wants to break the 17-year attendance records judging by how they are pulling out all the stops to send as many satellite winners to Las Vegas this summer. In addition to committing to send more than 700 online poker players to the WSOP Main Event via its WSOP MI, WSOP NJ, WSOP NV, and WSOP PA sites, plus its partner GGPoker, the WSOP is running a weekend of satellites across four continents that it hopes will send at least another 100 live poker qualifiers to Las Vegas.

Main Event Maynia is the WSOP’s first-ever global qualification weekend, which runs May 20-21. At the time of writing, 11 US-based casinos and venues in the Czech Republic, Canada, France, Morocco, and Uruguay are part of the festivities. The road to a 2023 WSOP Main Event seat starts with a $140 (or equivalent local currency) buy-in Mega Satellite that feeds into a $1,175 buy-in Main Event Maynia Tournament. Each of those $1,175 satellites guarantees at least one 2023 WSOP Main Event package, with more packages awarded for every ten entries. The package consists of the $10,000 WSOP Main Event buy-in for 2023, plus a $1,000 travel stipend.

Should the 2023 WSOP Main Event break the long-standing attendance record, all entrants will be placed into a random draw where one lucky winner wins a non-transferable Main Event buy-in for the next 30 years!
