PENN Completed Barstool Sports’ Remaining Share Acquisition

PENN Completed Barstool Sports’ Remaining Share Acquisition

Casino gaming and sports betting company PENN Entertainment announced the completion of its previously announced acquisition of the remaining share of Barstool Sports for approximately $388 million.

The acquisition of the remaining interest in Barstool Sports completed the second stage of the acquisition of the sports media brand in which PENN acquired a 36% stake in February 2020.

Pleased to welcome Barstool Sports fully into the PENN family, PENN’s chief executive officer and president, Jay Snowden, outlined Barstool’s credentials which lured PENN into the acquisition.

Barstool is a proven, powerful media brand with an authentic voice and vast, loyal audience that provides us with a strong top of funnel for new customer acquisition and organic cross-selling opportunities across our growing interactive division.

Jay Snowden, CEO & President, PENN

He further highlighted that the combination “with theScore’s reach and highly engaged user base” would help propel the brand and PENN’s integrated media and gaming business by creating “a massive digital footprint and ecosystem.”

Another benefit for Barstool would be its migration to PENN’s proprietary technology stack as it would “significantly enhance the overall product offering and deliver meaningful upside,” Snowden concluded.

Partners since 2020

PENN Entertainment initially announced the acquisition of the remaining interest in Barstool Sports in August last year after several years of working together with the brand since the $163 million initial interest acquisition deal in 2020 which followed the exclusive sports betting and iCasino partnership agreed upon by the parties in January 2020.

The acquisition took place during times when the founded as a free sports and gambling newspaper brand by Dave Portnoy in 2003 celebrates its 20th anniversary – a period during which Barstool Sports has evolved into a major player on the digital scene, operating across sports, lifestyle and entertainment.

“Barstool Sports is bigger than ever and has become more than I ever dreamed of,” Portnoy commented, thankful to the Barstool team and everyone who has been along for the ride, looking forward to the brand’s next chapter with PENN.

Boasting a loyal fan base of over 200 million, Barstool Sports affirmed itself as a multimedia brand, creating over 100 sports and comedy shows and delivering content via span podcasts, video, social media, live events, pay-per-view, and its growing commerce business.

Also commenting on the announcement, Barstool Sports’ chief executive officer, Erika Ayers, underscored the huge moment that was made possible after a lot of effort had been put in by a lot of people, stressing Barstool’s objective of creating “relevant and entertaining content” for the fans, as well as delivering “strong results” for its partners.

“It’s exciting to have that vision recognized and to be able to put it to work inside of PENN,” Ayers added, paying tribute to “the best fan base on the planet” and eager to deliver more for the fans “with PENN’s support.”

Celebrando las Personas Mayores y sus Cuidadores

Preventing the Link Between Crime & Problem Gambling

The Complete Guide to PokerStars Spin and Go Poker

The Complete Guide to PokerStars Spin and Go Poker

The excitement around Spin and Go tournaments has never died down since making their debut at PokerStars in 2014. Spin & Go games attract recreational and professional poker players in equal measure thanks to the jackpot element making it possible to turn a relatively small buy-in into a payout worth up to $1 million, and do so in a matter of minutes.

What is Spin and Go Poker?

Spin and Go tournaments are a variant of a sit-and-go that has no set start time, with each game starting as soon as enough players have bought in. A typical Spin & Go at PokerStars has three players, although the Spin & Go Max Hold’em has up to eight; more on that twist soon!

The so-called “jackpot sit and go” format first appeared online at Winamax in July 2013 under the name Expresso. Their popularity resulted in other online poker sites and networks creating their versions of these lottery tournaments. The iPoker Network launched Twister, the now-defunct Full Tilt released Jackpot, 888poker created BLAST, and PartyPoker got in on the act with SPINS.

You may be wondering why these popular poker tournaments are often referred to as lottery or jackpot sit & gos. That becomes apparent as soon as the games start. Rather than have a prize pool that the buy-in determines, the prize pool is randomly determined before dealing of the first cards. Most of the time, in fact, between 80-90% of the Spin & Go tournament you play, the prize pool will be either 2x or 3x your buy-in. However, if Lady Luck is shining down on you, you could find yourself playing in a game with a prize pool multiplier worth up to 240,000, meaning it is possible to win $1 million from some of the games!

This randomness adds an air of excitement to Spin & Go games because the potential payouts are massive, and playing in a tournament with one of the larger prize pool multipliers feels like you are enjoying a significant overlay.

Standard Hold’em and Omaha Spin & Go tournaments at PokerStars see you sit down with only 500 chips as a starting stack. The blinds start at 10/20, which means you only have 25 big blinds from the word go. The blinds shoot up rapidly, too. Check out the table below to see just how fast.

Prize pool multiplier Blinds (minutes)
2x 2
3-5x 3
10-25x 4
120x and above 5

The action is even crazier in Spin & Go Flash because you start your quest for glory with only 300 chips, and the blinds increase every minute!

Mostly, Spin & Go tournaments play as a winner-takes-all format, which means only the champion is paid. However, if the prize pool multiplier lands on 10x, the winner and runner-up receive a payday. Prize pool multipliers of 25x and above see all three entrants win a slice of the pie, although the first-place finisher reels in the lion’s share of the pot.

How to Play Spin and Go Tournaments

Registering for a Spin & Go tournament is as simple s getting involved in any other PokerStars sit & go or multi-table tournament; you’ll be spinning and going within a few mouse clicks!

  • Load up PokerStars and click on the Spin & Go tab
  • Decide whether you want to play Hold’em, Flash Hold’em, Max Hold’em, or Omaha
  • Click the buy-in that you want to play
  • Choose how many Spin & Go you want to play at the same time (between one and five)
  • Click Play Now and wait for your Spin & Go to fill up with players

Hold’em Flash Hold’em, and Omaha Spin & Go tournaments get underway as soon as three players are registered. Max Hold’em Spin & Go are slightly different in that they follow the same format but the number of entrants, between three and eight, are randomly determined before the tournament starts. Also, Max Hold’em games have a predetermined number of hands you play before the game forces every player all-in until the winner is crowned!

Buy-ins of $0.25, $1, $2, $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, and $1,000 are available, plus, on occasion, PokerStars runs special edition Spin & Go games that pay tournament tickets instead of cash. These usually appear in the run up to the Sunday Million or during major festivals such as the Spring Championship Of Online Poker (SCOOP) or the World Championship Of Online Poker (WCOOP).

Before you game starts and the cards are in the air, the PokerStars software displays a slot machine-like spinner that eventually settles on the prize pool you are playing for. No sooner has the prize pool been determined, you and your opponents receive your hole cards; you literally spin and then go!

Spin and Go games on PokerStars are also available as mobile poker games

How Much Can You Win?

The random prize pool multiplier means sometimes Spin and Go players win the lottery. Hitting the top prize pool multiplier of 12,000x at the lowest $0.25 stakes creates a $3,000 prize pool where second and third-place collect $250, and the champion wins $2,500, which is quite incredible for a quarter.

The $5 buy-in Spin & Go games have a 240,000x multiplier, resulting in a $1.2 million prize pool! Win this and you instantly become a millionaire, while both your opponents pad their bankrolls with $100,000 each.

As you can see in the tables below, most of the time you will play for either a 2x or 3x your buy-in prize pool. In fact, the prize pool multiplier will be 5x or above in less than 10% of the games you play, but the biggest multipliers do land, so there’s always a chance.

10 Tips for Sit & Go Success: How To Play Heads-Up

Are Spin and Go’s Profitable?

There was much talk on social media and on poker forums when PokerStars launched Spin & Go tournaments back in 2014, and most of the chatter suggested there were essentially unbeatable. The winner-takes-all format – for most of the games you play – combined with the hyper-turbo structure and the rake meant grinders did not expect to win consistently at Spin & Go.

However, once players began logging plenty of volume and devised strategies, they soon realized Spin & Go tournaments can be very profitable at PokerStars, even if you endure a long spell of not playing for the largest payouts, which is likely.

You see, this format attracts recreational players in droves, particularly at the lower end of the buy-in ladder. These players are happy to commit their stacks with less-than-stellar holdings in the hope of doubling up or busting and firing up the next Spin & Go. Sure, the shallow stacks and hyper-turbo blinds leaves little room to outplay these weak opponents, but you can still enjoy a significant edge over lower-stakes players if you put in enough study away from the tables and practice at them.

Of course, hitting one of the massive payouts will make Spin and Go very lucrative and profitable, but it is best to simply treat these as a bonus rather than relying on them to make you profitable in the games.

In addition, because a rake is charged in Spin & Go games, you progress through the Stars Rewards scheme, meaning you are earning the equivalent of rakeback all the time. Play enough games and you could be taking home four-figure sums of loyalty payments each month, which takes some pressure off your bankroll if you hit a dry spell.

Spin and Go Strategy: Tips to Win More

Winning Spin and Go players are well versed in short-handed, short-stacked, and heads-up play because these are the three main elements of this format. It is worthwhile studying these aspects of poker tournaments and working on improving your skills in each.

It is important to try and accumulate chips as soon as possible not only because of the rapidly increasing blinds, which will result in you becoming short-stacked sooner than you would like but also because you could find yourself with little to no fold equity if your stack dwindles and you find yourself heads-up for the victory.

The power of position is very real in this format, so be willing to show aggression when first in from the button or the small blind. You will find the better players either min-raise or make raises of 2.1-2.3 big blinds, so they put fewer chips at risk in case they are three-bet all-in, but it is still an amount that can win the pot preflop.

How Push-Fold Strategy Changes in Bounty Tournaments

Eventually, unless you manage to accumulate a big stack (in relation to the ever-increasing blinds), you are going to find yourself in push-or-fold territory where the only moves available to you are to fold or commit your entire shallow stack. One-hundred percent you need to study push-fold strategy because the knowledge will be the difference between showing a profit and being a losing player.

Team PokerStars’ Nick Walsh suggests studying push-fold ranges for the latter stages and always be on the front foot where possible.

“Just sit down and do your homework with regard to ranges. Have some guidelines on the kinds of ways you should be playing. It’s little things like adjusting your preflop raise sizes and ranges. Adjusting how wide you’re playing from all of the positions is huge. You want to be playing loads of buttons heads-up and defending your blinds extremely wide but in a controlled manner.”

Colorado Regulator Head Dan Hartman Retires after a Successful Tenure

Colorado Regulator Head Dan Hartman Retires after a Successful Tenure

Hartman was in charge of the regulator when the Centennial State officially introduced legal sports betting in May 2020. His tenure was notable for a level-headed and pragmatic approach, focusing on dialogue with operators and responsible gaming initiatives. Hartman was generally content with the organization’s accomplishments, noting it had more or less mastered the fundamentals.

Hartman Is a Consummate Professional

Dan Hartman has spent most of his career working with the Colorado state government. His early experience with greyhound racing helped kickstart his career as a manager at the Division of Gaming, where he spent over 19 years. After a brief stint as director of the state’s Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division, he moved back into his element as head of the Division of Racing Events.

With significant wagering experience and a clear understanding of the industry, Hartman also took charge of the Colorado Division of Gaming in August 2019 and played a pivotal role in establishing the state’s regulatory framework. His methodical approach and relentless efforts to curb illegal gambling won him the 2022’s Gaming Law Regulator of the Year Award and the high esteem of his peers.

The Future Director Will Inherit a Strong and Effective Organization

According to Hartman, the Colorado Division of Gaming was now in a good spot, making it a good time for him to take his leave without worry. In an interview with media outlet SportsHandle, the retiring director lauded the regulator’s accomplishments. He noted that there was always more to do but was confident that his leaving would not cause disruptions.

I think it’s a point in time where I’ve done quite a bit… Things are kind of getting to a point where they’re pretty solid.

Dan Hartman, director of the Colorado Division of Gaming

The regulator has not yet revealed who will inherit the governing position. Hartman should have significant sway in the choice of successor, and finding a suitable replacement will likely be one of his final challenges as director. The Colorado government has already submitted a job posting with suitably stringent requirements and appears more than willing to look outside the state if needed.
The new director will primarily maintain, enforce and develop new regulations, so a background related to the gambling industry will undoubtedly be an advantage. Colorado sportsbooks are experiencing continued revenue growth, reflecting a strong and healthy sports betting sector. An active and effective regulator is an indispensable part of that ecosystem, so the Division of Gaming needs to be extra careful when choosing its future leadership.

Major League Baseball Stadium Could Replace former World Series of Poker Site

Major League Baseball Stadium Could Replace former World Series of Poker Site

For the past four years, led by Las Vegas blogger Scott Roeben (Vital Vegas), rumors have spread about the Oakland A’s relocating to Sin City, and specifically to the long-time site of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) — the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino.

Those rumors are now beginning to seem more realistic given Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred’s recent comments and following a report from the Las Vegas Review Journal and the NBC affiliate (KSNV) in Las Vegas.

By the Numbers: 17 Years of the WSOP at the Rio

Worst Stadium in Baseball

The A’s, traditionally a competitive small-market franchise, have played in Oakland since relocating from Kansas City in 1968. But the team plays in what is almost universally accepted as the worst stadium in the league — Oakland Coliseum. Average attendance for the A’s in 81 home games last year was at 9,912 fans per game, easily the lowest out of 30 MLB teams (the Los Angeles Dodgers led the league with an average of 47,671 fans per game, in comparison).

As such, A’s owner John Fisher called upon the city of Oakland in the past few years to build his team a new stadium or he’ll be forced to relocate the team elsewhere. Unfortunately, for baseball fans in the Bay Area — and, yes, they still exist despite the pitiful attendance — it doesn’t appear that a deal on a proposed $1 billion waterfront stadium will ever come to fruition.

Speaking to Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on Sirius XM, Manfred wasn’t optimistic about the likelihood of the A’s remaining in Northern California. But that could be good news for baseball fans in Las Vegas.

“I think the A’s have proceeded prudently in terms of exploring the Las Vegas alternative,” Manfred said. “Given the lack of pace in Oakland, I think they have to look for an alternative.”

Oakland city councilman Noel Gallo told reporters that he wants the team to stay in the Bay Area, but will not support taxpayer funding for a new stadium. Fisher has given the city an ultimatum, and that is to pay for a new stadium or the A’s will do exactly as the Oakland Raiders NFL franchise did in 2020 when they moved to Las Vegas.

With that in mind, and even commissioner Manfred has said as much, a move to Las Vegas is becoming more likely. On Wednesday, reports indicated that the A’s were considering two Las Vegas locations — the Tropicana site on the south end of the Strip and the Las Vegas Festival grounds on the north end of the Strip.

But on Thursday, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported the team is also considering building a ballpark at a third site — the Rio, which is owned by Dreamscape Companies LLC, but still operated by Caesars Entertainment.

Iconic Poker Site to Become a Baseball Stadium?

The Rio is one of the most historical venues in poker as it served as the WSOP’s home from 2005-2021 before moving to Bally’s (now Horseshoe Las Vegas) on the Strip in 2022. Some of the most iconic moments in poker history took place at the Rio, such as Doyle Brunson winning his 10th WSOP bracelet in 2005 and Daniel Negreanu losing on a bad beat to bust from the 2015 Main Event just short of the final table.

One potential obstacle, and it’s a major one, to bringing Major League Baseball to the former WSOP site is that Dreamscape has reportedly been seeking an $850 million Rio renovation project.

But on Friday, Las Vegas’ NBC affiliate, KSNV, reported that a spokesperson for Dreamscape confirmed the company would entertain the idea of selling the land to the Oakland A’s.

“The company has been engaged in a dialogue about a portion of the excess land at the Rio as a potential MLB ballpark for the past several years. The company remains open to this idea,” the spokesperson said.

When Dreamscape purchased the Rio from Caesars Entertainment in 2019, the original plan was to renovate the casino hotel and rebrand it as a Hyatt, one of the top hotel chains in the United States.

Scott Roeben, who runs the popular Vital Vegas blog, has been making claims that the Rio could one day be torn down in place of a baseball stadium since 2018. He’s received some criticism for what some have said to be pushing false rumors. But on Thursday, the avid gambler who doesn’t particularly care much for sports took a victory lap on Twitter.

If baseball does indeed come to Las Vegas, it won’t be within the next year or two. Building a stadium takes time, and putting together the funding won’t be easy.

The 2023 Major League Baseball Spring Training season officially began on Tuesday with pitchers and catchers reporting in Arizona and Florida. Opening Day is scheduled for March 30. Oakland will start the season off at home with a three-game set against Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels. Ohtani, the first true two-way (pitching and hitting) star since Babe Ruth, might be the only reason to lure fans to the Oakland Coliseum for that series. The A’s figure to once again have the worst attendance in the league.

MGA Asks Unlicensed Operators to Self-report their Activity

MGA Asks Unlicensed Operators to Self-report their Activity

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has asked unlicensed operators to self-report their activity. This refers to companies that hold a license in European jurisdictions but are not licensed by the MGA. The regulator implied that it might be much more lenient to companies that decide to come forward.

MGA Asks Unlicensed Operators to Come Forward

As outlined in Regulation 22 of the Gaming Authorizations Regulations (S.L. 583.05), all entities that offer licensable games either in or from Malta and do not possess a license to do so should contact the authority.

The MGA pointed out that its appeal concerns companies that are licensed in a country that is a member state of the European Union or is a part of the European Economic Area. The appeal also concerns any operators that might offer customer safeguards that correspond to Maltese standards.

Such companies should apply for a recognition notice, the MGA concluded, basically asking companies to apply for a license if they are to continue offering their products in or from Malta.

The Operator Will Keep Self-Reported Companies in Mind

Gambling operators have until April 14 this year to comply with this call and self-report their activities. The MGA expects such companies to come forward and detail their administrative non-compliance.

The regulator concluded that it will make sure to be less harsh toward companies that have self-reported their unlicensed activities when taking action against unlicensed gambling.

The Authority shall consider this act of disclosure when meeting out any ensuing administrative decision in this regard.

MGA statement

The MGA noted that any entities wishing to learn more about the self-reporting scheme should contact the regulator. Unlicensed companies seeking to open a new page can connect with the MGA and learn more about the process by contacting the authority at [email protected]

The MGA Recently Updated Its Player Protection Directive

In other Malta-related news, the regulator introduced changes to its Player Protection Directive a month ago. The MGA based the amendments on feedback received through a dedicated consultation process and required licensed companies to monitor markers of harm.

In short, the MGA wants companies to keep track of their players’ behavior and intervene when a customer exhibits signs of problem gambling. Tracking suspicious activity may also help the MGA prevent monetary fraud such as money laundering.

The changes came into power on January 12, 2023. The move demonstrated the authority’s dedication to safe and responsible gambling and, according to the announcement, paved the way for further framework updates and improvements.
