Right in time for the Montreal Formula 1 race, Global Poker hosted the Grand Prix Turbo Series Montreal this week which featured four daily Gold Coins (GC) tournaments and four daily Sweeps Coins (SC) tournaments from June 16-18.

Each event, including the Main Event, required GC 11,000 or SC 11 to enter. The Grand Prix Turbo Series Montreal was the second installment of the Grand Prix Turbo Series after one in May supporting the Miami, Florida Formula 1 race.

At the end of the F1 season, the overall Sweeps Coin winner on Global Poker will win an exclusive trip to Italy and more specifically the Ferrari factory in Maranello.

“Clo22” Wins GC Main Event

The series kicked off with four winners on June 16, each of them taking home GC 1,072,500. “Missy1253” and “Johnniefrost” respectively won the first two events, while “Lizzie75” and “VITO2020” won events three and four.

Later in the series, “Tybach” and “Onlygreentrades” won events seven and eight, while “Iveyjr98” and “ThreePieceMeal” won the next two events.

When it came time for the Grand Prix Turbo Series 12 – Main Event – GC 25,000,000 Added, it was “Clo22” who came out on top over the field of 233 runners to win GC 5,589,579.60.

Now looking at the Sweeps Coin side of things, “Ledn378” started things out by winning Grand Prix Turbo Series 01 – GC 5,000,000 Guaranteed [Hyper-Turbo], while “Maysville”, “PineapplePizza” and “MoneyDance21” took down the next three events.

Each player earned 1,870, and the same was true as the next four winners: “LetsMuckShitUp”, “Ncoz11”, “Poke66” and “Fesuoy”.

But the biggest winner of them all was “DanHimillerdotcom”, who got through a field of 1,368 players in the Grand Prix Turbo Series 12 – Main Event with SC 50,000 added to win 10,465.97.

Twenty years after his defining victory in the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event that ignited the Poker Boom, Chris Moneymaker came to Las Vegas looking to further his already cemented status as one of the most important figures in poker history.

Only 27 years old at the time, Moneymaker spun a $40 satellite victory into $2.5 million in perhaps the most memorable and consequential WSOP victory of all time. Now a household name in poker, Moneymaker has now put up a $50,000 buy-in — the biggest of his two-decade poker career — to play the prestigious WSOP Poker Players Championship for the first time at the 2023 WSOP.

PokerNews spoke with Moneymaker during Day 1 on June 18 as he battled against the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Josh Arieh and two-time defending champion Dan “Jungleman” Cates, all of whom were seated at the 2003 Main Event champion’s table.

“It’s Something I’ve Always Wanted to Do”

While the presence of other poker legends like Phil Ivey, Eli Elezra and Lyle Berman in the PPC was expected, the appearance of Moneymaker, who primarily plays mid and low-stakes tournaments outside of the $10,000 Main Event, came as a surprise.

“Heading to Vegas tom(orrow) to play the poker player championship,” Moneymaker tweeted earlier this week. “My only event this summer outside the Main Event.”

Moneymaker, who called the PPC “my bucket list event,” told PokerNews the stars had finally aligned for him to play the high-stakes championship event.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, it just hasn’t really fit with my schedule,” Moneymaker said. “For whatever reason, it always fell on just the worst time. And I just told myself this year I was going to do it.”

Now 47 with a wife and teenagers home in Tennessee and having recently launched the Moneymaker Poker Tour, it’s hard for the father of three to find the time to play a summer schedule.

“I had some business stuff come up, so I wasn’t going to be able to come out and play,” he said. “And just luckily stuff kind of fell through and got delayed a little bit, so I talked to my wife and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to go out.’ And she’s like, you’ve been talking about it (playing the PPC) for ten years, so go do it. So I finally got out here to do it.”

“I don’t really travel much during the summer, so to come out here on Father’s Day … my oldest daughter, who’s 18, she was dogsitting. She texted me she’s like, ‘Daddy, you left without telling me bye.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I kind of did. But I’ll be back soon.'”

Playing With Champions

A deep run in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship is no easy task and Moneymaker found himself in the back of the Paris ballroom at a table of sharks, including recent five-time bracelet winner Josh Arieh and last year’s $1 Million Bounty recipient Matt Glantz. Later in the day, defending champion Cates took a seat to Moneymaker’s left as fellow Poker Hall of Famer Negreanu sat down to his right.

A few tables over sat Ivey, who Moneymaker famously delivered the bad beat of a lifetime to en route to his Main Event win.

“Obviously, everybody in this field is going to be good,” Moneymaker said. “So I expect(ed) that going in.”

PokerNews spoke with Moneymaker halfway through Day 1 as he tried to get above starting stack. “I haven’t gotten off to the best start, but I’ve got a lot of play left.”

A seasoned version of the young accountant wearing tinted racing glasses who bested Sammy Farha to shift the trajectory of poker, Moneymaker held his own through a rotation of Hold’em, Stud, 2-7 and Omaha, noting that Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better is “probably my (best game), that’s the one I play pretty much every single day. I play a lot of PLO and a lot of Omaha 8. I used to play a lot of stud and razz and all that.”

“It’s a mixed game (event), so it’s a little bit different,” he said. “So you don’t have constant pressure as far as making no-limit hands and stuff … the PLO hands are going to be pretty significant in this format, I would imagine.”

Other Poker Players Championship hopefuls acknowledged the presence of the man most associated of the Poker Boom. Late on Day 1, Britain’s Philip Sternheimer, seated to Moneymaker’s left, told the table about a time he got bluffed in a celebrity game by the then-recent Main Event champion.

“That was the best moment of my life at the time,” reflected Sternheimer. “And here we are 19 years later.”

Falling On Day 2

Moneymaker held his own on Day 1 and had three-quarters of a starting stack by the time 54 players bagged at the end of the day, around the same amount as the defending champion and fellow bracelets winners Shaun Deeb, Daniel Zack and Joe Cassidy and a distance behind Ivey and Arieh at the top of the counts.

When he returned to the Paris ballroom on Day 2, Moneymaker was once again seated to the left of Cates, while he had to worry about recent $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship winner Brian Yoon and online end boss Viktor “Isildur1” Blom to his own left.

It didn’t take long for Moneymaker to find himself at risk against Cates in his Terminator cosplay. After a Stud Hi-Lo hand that went in Cates’ favor, the two played a no-limit Hold’em hand that mimicked a confrontation between Moneymaker and Johnny Chan 20 years prior.

On a flop of 4♦3♥A♦, Moneymaker check-raised holding 10♦9♦ and “Jungleman” re-raised all in with K♦5♦.

Like Chan did in 2003, Moneymaker called off with the inferior flush draw to be in bad shape before a diamond on the river confirmed his elimination from his first Poker Players Championship.

As the Summer Sale Week kicked off at 888poker on June 19, nine 888poker players were in the process of padding their bankrolls with juicy prizes in the $100,000 Mystery Bounty Main Event.

Some 914 players had bought into the tournament the night before, but only nine of them made it through to the final table, which the 888poker Twitch channel streamed.

Three of the biggest mystery bounties were pulled out of their respective golden envelopes before the nine-handed table action began. “BRabbitino” and “Quesadealer” banked $3,000 bounties, while “Kezer7” grabbed a cool $10,000 despite their tournament ending in a 120th place finish!

“beijamyrola” entered the final table with only six big blinds, and it was unsurprising that they were the first finalist heading to the showers. They got the last of their stack in with pocket fours and lost a coinflip against the ace-ten of fellow Brazilian “jhonnesilva.”

Germany’s “Champkampi” fell in eighth after finding their last 1.8 big blinds in the pot from the big blind with ten-seven and losing to the far superior ace-nine of “johnnesilva.”

Seventh place went to “kaua.” who was the player that sat down in seventh place. “Yoshiaki97” min-raised from middle position with pocket jacks before calling the 21 big blind three-bet shove from “kaua.” Those jacks were up against pocket eights, and those jacks held on a king-high board.

“figalex25” of Peru busted in sixth after “d5t6y7” min-raised with ace-king and called the six big blind shove, from the big blind, that “figalex25” made with the dominated ace-five of hearts. “figalex25” turned a flush draw, but bricked the river the leave the tournament.

A cruel hand eliminated “Streusalz” in fifth just before the players went on a scheduled five-minute break. From the button, “d5t6y7” open shoved for 14 big blinds effective with the lowly six-five offsuit, and “Streusalz” snap-called off their seven big blinds with ace-king. “d5t6y7” completed a gutshot on the river to reduce the player count by one.

The final five became four with the demise of “jhonnesilva.” They became unstuck after seeing “Yoshiaki97” open-shove from the small blind, and deciding to call off their 19 big blind stack with pocket sixes. Those sixes were up against queen-jack, with the latter winning courtesy of flopping a Broadway straight!

“HvalaLama” went into three-handed play with only 13 big blinds, while their opponents had more than 120 big blinds between them. They were fighting a losing battle and did, indeed, lose, after a clash with “d5t6y7” did not go to plan. The queen-six of “d5t6y7” came from behind to beat the king-seven of “HvalaLama” when a six landed on the turn and a queen on the river.

“d5t6y7” went into heads-up against “Yoshiaki97” with a substantial 75 big blind to 39.2 big blind chip advantage. However, they could not press home that advantage and ultimately had to settle for second place.

Over the next hour, “d5t6y7” had “Yoshiaki97” down to sub-20 big blinds, but the Peruvian refused to give up. Their tenacity was rewarded when they made a flush holding the jack of hearts when “d5t6y7” had the ten of hearts.

That hand put “Yoshiaki97” in pole position, and the tournament ended soon after. “Yoshiaki97” limp-called a three-big blind raise with ace-five, not knowing they were up against ten-four offsuit. A trey-ten-queen flop saw “d5t6y7” lead for 2.1 big blinds, and the bet was called. An ace on the turn saw both players check. A seven on the river was greeted by check from “d5t6y7” but an over-bet shove from “Yoshiaki97.” “d5t6y7” could not find a fold, and called off their 17 big blind stack, only to discover they had an expensive second-best hand.

Second place came with $7,981 in total, while the champion took home $8,176.

Norway’s “geovir” was the first player eliminated from the final table; they took home $1,906 for their troubles.

“DoryanGh” and “mmosna” were the next casualties. Their untimely demises made a little easier to take by the $3,115 and $5,175 to collected.

Then came the exit of “John_Player_Red” in fifth, a finish worth $6,391 in total. That bust out locked in a five-figure sum for the surviving five players, when you include bounty payments.

Brazil’s “oliverya1947!??” banked $10,090 after falling in fifth, with “3L3CTRO.89” collecting $10,453 for their fourth-place finish.

The heads-up stage was reached when “alexkit13” of Moldova fell by the wayside and padded their PokerStars balance with $15,412.

Heads-up pitted “IamTABASCO” against “HugoFabri.” Both players were guaranteed more than $21,900 from the main prize pool, but the final bounty haul for one of them would weigh in at more than $15,000. In the end, it was “IamTABASCO” who emerged victoriously, reeling in $37,784, leaving “HugoFabri” to scoop a $24,901 consolation prize.
