Following a fan vote, the 10 finalists have been disclosed for the 2023 Poker Hall of Fame, and the list of nominees is mostly similar to last year.
Matt Savage, Brian Rast, Mike Matusow, and Kathy Liebert were among the returnees. But only one individual, whether it be a player or industry personnel, will get in this year. The full list of nominees, with a case made for each candidate, is as follows:

Some New Faces, Most are Repeats
Layne Flack, a six-time bracelet winner who passed away in 2021, was inducted last year. The finalists list for this year has three changes and that is the addition of Forrest, Ausmus, and Smith, the 1985 world champion. Ausmus recently won his sixth bracelet and has won five World Series of Poker (WSOP) titles in just 21 months.
Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and Michael Mizrachi were the two players nominated last year via the fan vote but not this year. The final list will now be sent to the 32 living members of the Poker Hall of Fame to vote on the 2023 inductee. That winner will be honored at the WSOP on July 13.
Brian Rast
On Thursday, Rast’s performance at the final table of Event #43: $50,000 Poker Players Championship, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, could have a significant impact on the 2023 Hall of Fame voting.
Rast has already won the PPC twice and has five bracelets. He’s been a respected high-stakes cash game pro for years on top of his tournament success. Should he win the bracelet, it very well could get him over the hump and into the Hall of Fame, if he wasn’t already the favorite.

All 10 individuals on the list of nominees has an intriguing case to be made, so it won’t be easy for the Hall of Famers to make their decision. Take, for example, Liebert, who has 95 WSOP cashes, one bracelet, nearly $7 million in live tournament earnings, and has consistently been one of the top female players in the world for decades.
And then there is Matusow, who many forget was one of the most popular and colorful characters during the poker boom era and also one of the best in the game for at least a decade during the 2000s.
But there are also those who made an impact on the game away from the felt. Savage, Scheinberg, McEachern, and Chad have all significantly contributed to the growth of the game for many years. Voters must compare apples to oranges because only one person gets inducted each year.

How To Play Your Hands against a Dealer’s 9 Upcard
When a dealer shows a 9 upcard in blackjack, she has about a 77% chance of getting to a final hand that totals 17 through 21 and only a 23% chance of busting (depending on the number of decks shuffled).

Great Canadian Entertainment has announced that Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto is set to open June 20, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. local time. The highly anticipated opening, next to Woodbine Racetrack, will open a huge gaming floor of more than 300,000 square feet and all of the Las Vegas-style amenities Canadians have come to expect from the legacy lottery casino operator.
Meanwhile, Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario subsidiary, iGaming Ontario’s (iGO) spokespersons were at the Canadian Gaming Summit in Toronto last week and iGO’s Martha Otton, executive director told a panel discussion and its sizable audience that the sectors participants are “crushing it”.
Neither Great Canadian’s press release nor iGaming Ontario’s comments addressed any possibility of unmovable objects being met with irresistible forces.
Landmark Development
Great Canadian Entertainment is betting on its in-person offering of entertainment, massive gaming space with over 4,800 slot machines and 145 table games situated in 328,000 square feet of gaming space – Canada’s largest casinos and one of the biggest in North America capturing in-person-gamblers’ attention and holding it through other amenities as well on 33-acres of fun with a great location near the Highways 401 and 427 interchange.
In addition to innovative modern architecture and a location adjacent to the popular Woodbine Racetrack, visitors will also find a 400-room hotel, a vast array of on-site dining, and a 5,000-person live entertainment venue.
While the new venue there cost some $1 billion it is also expected to generate about $500m in annual economic impact.
Great Canadian Entertainment CEO, Matthew Anfinson said of the opening: “We are thrilled to announce that our highly anticipated new casino will open on June 20. With meticulous attention to detail, state-of-the-art amenities, and a commitment to exceptional guest experiences, our landmark entertainment resort is a game-changer in Toronto,” said the CEO.
The company noted that the existing Casino Woodbine would continue operations without interruption until the new venue opens for a seamless transition. The release also noted that there will be a “PlaySmart Centre on the gaming floor, filled with engaging interactive tools and valuable responsible gambling resources available for all players.”
Ontario iGaming “Crushing It”
While the first quarter of business for iGaming in the province isn’t complete, so there are no final numbers available yet, Martha Otton of iGo told attendees at the Canadian Gaming Summit in Toronto on Wednesday that GGR or gross gaming revenues were “3.5 times as large as Q1 last year, “ according to a report on CDC Gaming Reports.
Other panel members discussing the first full year of legalized and regulated iGaming in the province included board chair of iGaming Ontario, Dave Forestell; Ontario Attorney General, Doug Downey, and Tom Mungham, chief executive officer of AGCO – the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario a crown agency responsible for the actual regulation of alcohol, gaming and horse racing sectors and cannabis retail stores in Ontario.
A study commissioned by iGO and provided by Deloitte was released at the discussion which estimates some 12,000 “full-time-equivalent” jobs had been created by liberalizing online gambling in Ontario and had boosted the province’s GDP contribution of some CAD$1.6 billion with $900m of that on labor income.
Of the more than 12,000 jobs, Otton said: “…whether they’re direct or indirect jobs in the market and an average salary well above the provincial average. They’re good jobs for this province coming here.”
The Deloitte report, “Economic Contributions of Ontario’s Regulated iGaming Market,” not only examines the economic impact of a more openly competitive model in the province but also the decision to keep the lottery involved. The former model was run through a hybrid crown corporation with the government being one stakeholder and the Ontario Lottery being the other. The current model brings dozens of competitors to the market while maintaining ties to the lottery.
The Deloitte report projected the potential for an additional 10,000 new jobs, a further boost to $4.7 billion in annual GDP, and the possibility of breaking the $2b mark in government revenues within the first decade of operations.
The report said that igaming employment is over 40% more lucrative than private sector employment with average earnings of over $100,000 per year and noted that some sectors participating include those with skills in mathematics, technology, engineering, and science.
Government sector benefits would include a boost in revenue from last year’s $470 million provincial earrings to nearly one and a half billion in revenue in 2031-32 based on the 20% revenue-share model used in Ontario; federal revenue increasing to ^47m from $238m, and a nearly two-fold increase in revenue for Ontario municipalities from $54m to $115m.

Thankfully it proved just a temporary blip in what became the biggest selling poker book of the last decade.
everything in the book still holds true for Target Stack satellites
Back in 2019, Barry had a feeling of deja vu on the day Poker Satellite Strategy, his first book with me, launched. A new type of satellite was unveiled in the US, and in fact the first few responses we got to the announcement were queries as to whether the new format rendered our book redundant. Our initial fears that this might be the case dissipated for two reasons. First, while this new “Target Stack” format gained some popularity, most notably with PokerStars, they gained no traction online and even live, most satellites remained the familiar old super satellite that the book delves into in considerable detail. And second, it turns out that everything in the book still holds true for Target Stack satellites. In fact, Target Stack satellites don’t complicate the strategy, they actually simplify it, as I will explain in this article.
The differences
So what are the differences? Instead of the more common satellite format in which x number of players win a seat by surviving the bubble, a player wins their seat in a Target Stack satellite when their stack gets to a certain size: the target stack. Let’s say 30 players enter the tournament with 1,000-chip starting stacks and one player in ten gets a seat. In the old satellite format, three players win their seat when 27 players are eliminated. Qualifiers could have a 20,000 stack or literally just an ante. It wouldn’t matter. In the new format, each player would win a seat when they get their stack to 10,000 chips or more, regardless of when that happens. They could literally win their seat in the first orbit.
there is no point in stalling in these events
This format initially proved very popular when I saw it at EPT Prague a few years ago because it addresses a number of issues with traditional super satellites, such as stalling and having to play long after you’ve effectively locked up a seat. There is no point in stalling in these events, an obvious benefit. You can win your seat quickly too, which is much nicer and also good for liquidity in general if it means players can register for the target event sooner. There are some big strategic adjustments required compared with regular satellites, where survival is key. It doesn’t matter how big your stack is if you beat the bubble in normal satellites, so in those tournaments, a big stack can exert ICM pressure on short stacks, desperate to survive.
Reverse ICM
The opposite is true in this new format. The chip leaders are the players with everything to lose and little to gain. If the target is 10k and you have 9,000 chips in the example above and a shorter stack shoves for 4,000, you really don’t want to call and risk the gains you have already made. It really is a format where the short stacks can pressure the big stacks.
In Poker Satellite Strategy, we introduced a new concept called COC (chance of cashing), which is by far the single most important concept in satellites. We explained a couple of different ways you can use what we call gorilla maths at the table to estimate your COC at any point. Early in the tournament, we have to work out what the average stack will be when the bubble bursts, and our COC at this stage is best estimated as the percentage of the target stack we have. To continue a similar example as above, if starting stack is 1,000 chips and one in ten players win a seat, the average stack when the bubble bursts will be 10,000. If we double up early to 2,000 chips, our COC increases from 10% to 20%.
Near the bubble (of a traditional satellite), things get much more complicated. Typically, some players will have more than the target stack at this point. To continue the example, say we started with 30 runners and there are three seats, and starting stack is 1,000 chips, we use 10,000 as the target to assess our COC early on. But let’s say on the bubble with four left, the two chip leaders have 14,000 chips each and the two short stacks only 1,000. The chip leaders are all but locked up unless they do something stupid against each other, but they can only win one seat, so their COC is capped at 1. This leaves the two shorties who have only 10% of the target, effectively in a dog fight for the last seat. In this case, 10% of starting stack equates to a COC of 50%.
The gorilla maths of working out bubble COCs can be quite complicated and a significant chunk of Poker Satellite Strategy is devoted to how to work it out at the table. The good news if you’re playing a target stack satellite is you don’t need to even read this section of the book because you don’t need to do that maths: your COC is always your current percentage of the target stack (one minor exception to this is in some target satellites excess chips over the target are taken out of play rather than redistributed meaning the last couple of seats are allocated to the last surviving players even though they haven’t reached the target).
How the strategy changes
Until you get to 50% of your target stack, the strategy is essentially ChipEV, i.e., there is no ICM pressure on you. You should play your hands exactly as you would in a cash game and not pass any profitable spots. However, as in the example above, you can exert ICM pressure on players who are near to the target stack. Get above 50% of the target, however, and you have to tighten up. Below 50% you only need 50% equity to break even against any player, but after that the equity you need to put all your chips at risk is the percentage of the target stack you currently have. If you have 75% of the target stack you need 75% equity to justify risking losing all these chips. The worst spot is if you are almost there with 95% equity as you would need 95% equity to risk your chips and no starting hand has that much of an advantage. Even shorter stacks can exert significant pressure.
the better a player does, the easier it is for the player behind to get back in the game
This is where a short stack can pressure a big stack. This is what is known as a “rubber band effect” in games, where the better a player does, the easier it is for the player behind to get back in the game (pool is a good example of this). Let’s say a shorty has 1,000 chips and the chip leader has 9,800. The short stack is only risking one buy-in’s worth of chips if they shove into the chip leader. If the leader calls they can only win 200 chips but are risking 1,000, so they would need 80% equity to justify the call. That is usually only aces. In the example above, if the leader called and won, they would only win the 200 chips they need for a seat and the remaining chips would be redistributed back into the tournament. The PokerStars version redistributes them equally among the other players at the table.
At some point, the chip leader has to acknowledge to themselves that they will need to take a worse-than-ICM spot to get over the line. They might need 2-to-1 equity but decide that taking a 60/40 is their best chance at winning a seat, otherwise they risk sliding back down the chip rankings. The best time for anyone to win a seat is when they have exactly 50% of the target stack. A double up now will win them a seat and they only need 50% equity to justify risking elimination.
Bounty satellites
This is an even newer format where to encourage players to play looser, there is a bounty element. This might fix the tough spot the chip leaders find themselves in. If the buy-in was €1,100 with a €500 bounty to win a €5,000 seat, the bigger stacks can keep ploughing ahead and playing loose to also win the bounties. If a player with 75% of the target can pick up €1,500 in bounties on their way to the target, they have a reason not to play so tight. It’s very much in my interest to rail against a format like this because I am the author of Poker Satellite Strategy, which covers everything you need to know about the traditional satellite format.
However, I really like this new format and think it could prove popular. I think the format will need a few tweaks before it reaches a final form and perhaps the traditional format is much better suited to recreational players because this “chip accumulation” format suits professionals more. Either way, it’s good for poker when formats change to keep them fresh and tough to solve, and I look forward to playing more Target Stack satellites in the future.

Day 23 of the 2023 World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas saw three bracelets awarded, and Phil Ivey come close to bagging the 11th bracelet of his career. It was not meant to be for Ivey, but the following players are either celebrating epic victories, or could be over the next few days.
The first bracelet awarded on Day 23 went to Jay Lockett in Event #46: $500 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout. The final three players were going to bag and tag for the night and come back for an unscheduled fourth day, but Carlos Guerrero busted on that last hand before that happened. Zhen CaZhen Caii and Leffingwell chose to play on, and Leffinwell came out on top to become the tournament’s champion.
Ivey Busts From the $50K PPC Shakerchi Leads the Final Five

The field of Event #43: $50,000 Poker Players Championship has been cut down to only five players as the race towards this event’s bracelet and $1,324,747 top prize continues.
A bunch of superstars were among the final 12 players that returned to the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas for Day 4, including the legendary Phil Ivey, who was chasing his elusive 11th bracelet. Unfortunately for Ivey and his legion of fans, he bowed out in sixth place.
Talal Shakerchi (10,170,000) is the man to catch going into the final day’s action, and is the only player with a stack larger than 10 million chips. Two former winners of this event, Matthew Ashton (7,380,000) and Brian Rast (4,545,000) are keeping tabs on the leader. Should Rast take down this event, he will join Michael Mizrachi as a three-time PPC champion.
James Obst (5,100,000) and Kristopher Tong (2,500,000) make up the rest of the final five, but are not there to make up the numbers.

Is Shorr’s Bracelet Drought About to End?

Shannon Shorr appears the list of best poker players without a bracelet every year. Indeed, this very writer has predicted Shorr would get the proverbial monkey off his back for the past three WSOPs. Shorr has arguably his best chance yet of capturing some WSOP hardware because he is second in chips with only 15 remaining in Event #44: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em.
Shorr returns to battle with 8,750,000 chips, or 44 big blinds if you prefer. Only Aram Oganyan (9,900,000) has more betting tokens than the American grinder.
Anyone that reaches this stage of a major live event has done so on merit, so Shorr and Aganyan have plenty of work ahead of them if they are to emerge from the fray victoriously.
Such luminaries as Ankush Mandavia (4,800,000), Jon Van Fleet (3,800,000), Australia’s Alex Lynskey (3,650,000), and Aliaksandr Hirs (2,975,000) are still fighting fit and ready to mount a charge for the $717,879 top prize.

Vamos! Dzivielevski Leads By Several Lengths in the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E.

Brazilian superstar Yuri Dzivielevski (2,020,000) hold a commanding lead going into Day 3 of Event #47: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. as he hunts down a third WSOP bracelet. Dzivielevski has almost 700,000 chips mor than any of the other 27 remaining players, but six of those players are WSOP champions, so it is not job done just yet for the Brazilian.
Gershon Distenfeld (1,300,000) returns in third place. You may recall Distenfeld has a habit of donating his poker tournament winnings to charity.
Andrew Barber (950,000), Frankie O’Dell (905,000), Denis Nesterenko (845,000), Randy Ohel (805,000), and Anson Tsang (440,000) are the other returnees that already have some poker jewelry in their collection.

Seniors Turn Out in Force for Day 1A of their Championship Event

Popular grinder Frank “Skullman” Harrington (445,000) soared into an early lead after Day 1a of Event #48: $1,000 Seniors Championship. Some 3,692 players bought into the first of two flights, but only 730 of those starters bagged and tagged after the completion of 11 levels.
Rayesh Goyal (429,000) came close to claiming the chip lead. As did Christian Munk (427,000), and Jose Obadia Chocron (403,500), but the night belonged to Harrington.
Mark Seif (355,000) and Dieter Dechant (301,000) found themselves bagging up top ten stacks; both have already won bracelets during their careers.
Others to look out for on Day 2 from the Day 1a field include Lee Markholt (243,000), Ted Forrest (181,500), Victor Ramdin (167,500), Billy Baxter (155,000), Andy Frankenberger (152,500), Mike Matusow (117,500), and Barry Greenstein (82,500).

What to Expect on Day 24 of the 2023 WSOP
You need to keep your internet browser locked to the PokerNews live reporting pages on June 22, which is the 24th day of the 2023 WSOP.
Event #43: $50,000 Poker Players Championship will crown its worthy champion, as will Event #44: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em, and Event #49: $1,500 Super Turbo Bounty. Someone will also win a bracelet in Event #47: H.O.R.S.E. and in Online Event #9: $1,000 PLO Championship.
There will also be action from Day 1b of Event #48: $1,000 Seniors Championship, Day 2 action from Event #50: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship, while Event #51: $1,000 Tag Team and Event #52: $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw will shuffle up and deal for the first time!
The third day of Event #45: $1,500 Mixed Omaha Hi-Lo at the 2023 World Series of Poker has come to a close with Houston native William Leffingwell taking home the $253,651 first-place prize and his first WSOP gold bracelet.
Leffingwell had no easy task navigating his way through this final table with bracelet winners Shaun Deeb, Joey Couden, Raj Vohra and 2019 Main Event finalist Zhen Cai attempting to stand in his way, but by night’s end, he’d be hoisting a bracelet over his head and carrying the Houston PLO scene on his back.
Leffingwell had a huge rail, and it was clear how much it meant to him to have people that he cares about behind him to witness him stepping into the spotlight and clinching the top spot. In fact, he hadn’t even planned to come to Las Vegas for the WSOP until the main event, but his best friend Scott Dulaney won a bracelet last week and told him he needed to come win a bracelet before the main event. Leffingwell’s response? “Ok, I’ll come win the $1,500 Mixed Omaha event.”
One week after calling his shot, he stands atop a field of 1,091 players as the last man standing. After coming into Day 3 in the middle of the 33 returning players, Leffingwell steadily built a stack and marched toward the final table. Once there, he put on a clinic by picking his spots well, being disciplined when needed, and getting max value when it counted.

“Putting Houston on the Map”

When asked what it meant to him to be standing in the Thunderdome with a bracelet in hand and the people he cares about in his corner, Leffingwell said, “Man, I love these people, and I love Houston. We’ve been through a lot these last couple of years, and poker down there is the best in the world.”
He even laid an open invitation to anyone in the world, saying, “PLO is our game, and we invite everyone in the world to come play at any stakes.” Before letting him get back to his celebration, his last parting words with PokerNews mentioned plans to win another bracelet this summer, so we’ll have to keep a look out for Leffingwell to see if he can call two shots in one summer.
Final Table Action
The first casualty of the final table was John Zable when he was ousted by the eventual runner up, Zhen Cai.
Following him to the door was Benjamin Miner, who got a very short stack in before the flop and couldn’t find the help he needed to extend his run at the final table.
Raj Vohra was next to the payout desk after getting short and mounting a big comeback that ultimately fell short of helping him win a second bracelet.

Five-handed play lingered for some time, but it was eventually another bracelet winner in Shaun Deeb who exited after coming into the final table with a big chip lead. All eyes were certainly on Deeb to see if he could add a seventh lifetime bracelet and a second of the summer to his legacy, but he would eventually fall in a big confrontation with the eventual champion.
Another bracelet winner, Joey Couden, was sent to the rail in fourth place when he couldn’t dodge the scoop outs of his opponent, Carlos Guerrero, and while Guerrero would come out the victor in that confrontation, he was also the next to exit the final table in what became a massive confrontation with Zhen Cai.
The heads up battle between Cai and Leffingwell lasted a total of seven hands with a massive swing taking place on the second hand dealt that would allow Leffingwell to take command of the momentum and the chip lead before ending Cai’s run in second place to take the title.
