Celebrating Preflop?

Andreas Kniep wsop poker
Andreas Kniep

Your hand isn’t a winner until your opponent has exactly a 0% chance of winning. That’s a lesson Andreas Kniep learned, or at least we hope he did, at the final table of Event #53: $1,500 Millionaire Maker.

Patrick Leonard clipped the action from the PokerGO live-stream and shared it on Twitter. In the hand, Pavel Plesuv had moved all in with A2 and had a much larger stack than Kniep, who was holding AA.

When the action returned to Kniep, he stood up, picked his cards up so he could flash them to his rail, and began chanting, “put the cameras out,” whatever that’s supposed to mean in this context, before exposing his cards to Plesuv. He then celebrated with his rail as if the hand was over. Unfortunately, for the poker player who was attempting to become a millionaire, there were still five cards to come.

The flop came out 3510, giving Plesuv a gut-shot straight draw, but the 4 on the turn completed the straight. Still, Kniep could win the hand with a spade on the river, however, the final card was the 7 and the aces were officially cracked. Plesuv would go on to win the bracelet for $1.2 million, while Kniep was out in fourth place and took home just over $500,000.

Kessler Rolled Up in Stud-8, Still Can’t Win Pot

Allen Kessler 'Chainsaw'
Allen Kessler

If it seems like Allen Kessler suffers a ton of bad beats, it’s because he shares them all on social media. During Event #63: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Championship, the habitual min-casher had a rough hand that he’d probably like to forget.

His hand began with 8x8x in the hole and 8x face-up, making him rolled up. Despite being in a great position through the first three cards dealt, he didn’t seem to like the next three cards — 2x4x5x — even though he had trips and was drawing to an eight low.

That’s because Perry Friedman’s exposed cards were showing JxKxJxJx, which of course is superior to the trip eights. It was possible that Kessler was drawing dead or would have required hitting a card to fill up for the high pot and would have needed a non-pairing low card on seventh street to claim the low pot. So, he ended up folding to a bet on sixth street.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Kessler groaned about the bad beat.

“If it makes you feel any better, you’re lucky you didn’t fill up,” Friedman said ominously.

Being Rolled Up No Help to Chino Rheem Either

chino rheem wsop poker
Chino Rheem

Kessler wasn’t the only player who was rolled up and couldn’t win the pot in that same $10,000 stud hi-lo tournament. On Day 3, Chino Rheem had 2x2x in the hole and 2x face-up. He’d then add 9x8x4x for his next three cards and then was forced to fold on sixth street, much like Kessler.

In the almost exact same scenario, Rheem was up against exposed superior trips. Joao Vieira’s board was showing AxAx5x, and his bet convinced Rheem to fold at that point. It was a wise decision because the rolled up deuces was drawing dead when Vieira showed off the Ax he had in the hole.

“That third ace saved you a lot of money,” Bryn Kenney, the eventual runner-up, told Rheem.

“I didn’t even like the second one,” Rheem replied.

Rheem would go on to finish in fifth place ($79,189), while Vieira took eighth place ($35,826).

Chasing a Draw with a Bracelet on the Line

2023 wsop poker
Jason Daly

The final table in Event #58: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em (6-Handed) was quite a doozy. Jason Daly, who held the chip lead, was heads-up against Brent Mutter, and the pay jump from first to second place was $102,132 to $102,132.

With a bracelet and over $60,000 extra up for grabs, Mutter raised it up on the button with 22 and Daly defended from the big blind with 53. The flop came out 742, which was pretty much the juiciest flop imaginable.

Daly checked bottom set, while his opponent bet the open-ended straight flush draw. That resulted in a check-raise, followed by a three-bet, a four-bet, and then an all-in jam and call. The turn was a harmless 9 but the 6 gave Daly the straight flush. What a way to win a World Series of Poker bracelet.

Another Draw Versus Set Situation

WSOP Sign

This hand was quite similar to the one above, although it took place on Day 1, not at the final table, of Event #70: $400 Colossus. In the hand, Paul Benade went flopped a set of aces but still had to sweat it out against his opponent, whose name wasn’t known.

On a flop of 10KA, Benade was all in with pocket aces against a player holding AJ top pair and a royal flush draw. Needing to fade a diamond or a queen, Benade watched the 5 appear on the turn, completing the flush. But the 10 on the river paired the board and the pocket aces held up to scoop a huge early pot.

AC News: 5-Year iGaming Lease on Life, Borgata Turns 20, Indoor Waterpark Delays Opening

AC News: 5-Year iGaming Lease on Life, Borgata Turns 20, Indoor Waterpark Delays Opening

In news from Atlantic City, New Jersey we’ll explore a potential new 5-year authorization to continue online gambling at casinos located in the seaside resort city on the Jersey Shore.

We’ll take a look at a 20-years-young casino that has consistently led the market in footfall and table-take, internet gaming, and innovation. And finally, we’ll check in on The Showboat, a former casino slated to become the world’s largest beachside indoor waterpark. Bill Blatstein’s Island Waterpark was slated to open 4th of July weekend but the opening was pushed back at least a week due to a delay in permits for the rides there.

Lawmakers Consider 5-Year Extension of Atlantic City iGaming

Nobody is quite sure why lawmakers in New Jersey recently shortened the time they are extending online gambling in the state from 10 years to only 5 years – cutting in half operators’ ability to secure long-term financing, establish profitable business plans, or borrow against potential future earnings to expand offerings.

The move was made by amendment without public debate or prior announcement last Tuesday. It cut initially cut the timeline to 2 years in what was seen by some as posturing to show who holds the purse strings when it comes time to decide who pays how much in taxes to the state. The current authorization is set to expire this year. No final vote has been held yet on the 2-year, five-year, or 10-year extension.

Internet gambling taxes are currently the highest among the three sectors at 15% while sportsbetting venues pay 13%, and in-person or brick-and-mortar casinos pay just 8% on the money they win from players.

Don Guardian, a former mayor of Atlantic City and current Assemblyman said, “We’re all trying to figure out what happened,” according to a report in the Associated Press.

A 10-year extension as originally provided for in the bill is ”crucial” to the casinos’ ongoing successful operations according to Mark Giannantonio, president of Resorts Casino as well as the Casino Association of New Jersey.

The reauthorization of the internet gaming bill for 10 years is vital to the continued success of the gaming industry in New Jersey and the programs that are supported by the taxes collected,” he said.

Assemblyman Guardian cautioned that the shortened time frame could devastate the metric of commercial gambling in the city where online operators lead the six states that currently offer regulated online casino gaming. Rhode Island lawmakers recently authorized online casino gambling but those casinos, to be operated by Bally’s and IGT, are not expected to come online until early 2024.

Guardian said, “No one is going to invest money in a company that has (a brand) if you only have two more years. Those things < establishing an online identity and recognition>cost money. This has been what’s helping keep Atlantic City alive.

Gamblers at Atlantic City’s online casinos have left over $6 billion in the virtual machines and on the tables since providers in the state started taking internet bets in November 2013. This, is according to the American Gaming Association, the national trade and lobbying organization that represents America’s comercial casino industry. The number is counted separately from New Jersey online sports betting operators’ revenues.

Online gaming revenues are credited with helping their land-based counterparts survive the Covid-19 shutdowns at the start of the world health emergency when physical doors were shut for more than a quarter of 2020. They also helped the books heal as many gamblers stayed away soon after the doors re-opened, wary of exposure.

Borgata Marks Two Decades as Game Changer

Twenty years ago, MGM Mirage and Boyd Gaming joined forces under the leadership of former Borgata CEO Bob Boughner and marshaled resources and a new commitment to the Marina District when others were pulling back or even pulling out – the extraordinary investments and follow-through on a commitment set the stage for the iconic hotel and casino to rise above the fray and start a winning streak that continues today. Even as losers and also-rans pulled out, the Borgata dug deeper and dug in to stay.

According to an article in the Press of Atlantic City: “In line with trends happening in Las Vegas, the Borgata Casino & Spa featured high-end design features in the hotel rooms, on the casino floor, and in its restaurants and nightclubs that were superior to what was available at the other casino hotels in Atlantic City at the time,” faculty director for Stockton University’s Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality & Tourism, School of Business, Jane Bokunewicz said.

According to Bokunewics, Borgata set a high bar and established itself as a top-tier destination on par with the better properties in Las Vegas and this either forced or inspired other operators to “keep up with the Joneses” in terms of quality which established Atlantic City as a premiere destination resort city.

The Borgata, as it was known then, after all, was designed to appeal to a luxury-minded segment of the potential customer base with sleek and modern room designs, upscale marble showers, celebrity chef restaurants, vaulted ceilings above the casino floor, and exciting bars and nightclubs. Some other operators were able to pull it off and others failed or gave up while others around them were making money from their investments.

More than 800 day-one employees and workers who moved up into management are still working there. Most were on hand over the weekend to take part in festivities as part f the resort’s summer=long “birthday bash” that included a 1,000-foot “light show” featuring 500 lighted drones.

Earlier, the property announced it had opened a new high-limit slots lounge as well as the unveiling of new luxury suites at the hotel.

Island Waterpark at Showboat Resort

World’s Biggest Indoor Beachside Waterpark Opening Delayed

Those who came to Atlantic City for 4th of July Weekend celebrations and expected to be among the first to visit Island Waterpark will go home disappointed in that respect unless they stick around until at least the following weekend beginning on July 7th.

Showboat developer Bart Blatstein is now saying that the 100,000-square-foot attraction will not open before then.

In a prepared statement, Blatstein said, “You only have one chance to make a first impression. This is the world’s largest indoor beachfront waterpark and a destination that will last many decades, so I want to ensure everything is perfect.

Multiple media reports are saying it was a delay in permits for some of the rides that caused the delay rather than some loose ends or aesthetics that weren’t ready yet.

New Jersey state Department of Community Affairs (DCA) spokeswoman Lisa Ryan said in a statement found at Press of Atlantic City: “The Island Waterpark at Showboat rides are currently in the approval process. DCA is working in cooperation with the waterpark owner to ensure the ride documentation submittal, review, and approval process is followed and completed.

Marty Small, Atlantic City’s Mayor noted that a few “technical issues” need to be cleared up.

We’d rather be a million percent sure,” Small said, according to the Philidelphia Inquirer. “The bottom line is, we’ve had dreams of a waterpark in the great city of Atlantic City fail multiple times. People doubted Bart Blatstein. The waterpark is beautiful.

According to digital literature and earlier media report, the $100 million Jersey Shore seaside attraction will feature three head-first slides; tube slides, a 1,000-square-foot surf simulator; a 6,500-square-foot lazy river; five waterslides for younger children at the park’s Slide Island, and a kid’s area called Kids Cove.

But it’s not all “kids’ stuff” at Island Waterpark. There will also be plenty for adults to do
“ After dark” including with six bars featuring craft beer, wine, and cocktails; Paradise Adult Island, a 10,000-square-foot entertainment and relaxation space overlooking the ocean and waterpark with live DJs; and Bliss Pool featuring a swim-up bar reserved for adults only.

Nor is the price easy on the wallet to visit this one-of-a-kind AC wonder with adult tickets (VIP) running $119 for all access and regular daytime entry costing $89. Those who visit between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. can get a discount with a $69 entry ticket.

Patrice Brandt Becomes the Latest PokerStars Sunday Million Champion ($79,828)

Patrice Brandt Becomes the Latest PokerStars Sunday Million Champion ($79,828)

Patrice “pAtcAsh83” Brandt‘s decision to either miss the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) or at least delay flying out to Las Vegas was vindicated when he came out on top of a 9,114-strong field in the latest edition of the PokerStars Sunday Million.

Brandt helped himself to the $59,217, plus $20,611 from the progressive bounty prize pool, for a total score worth $79,828. Perhaps now he will jet off to “Sin City” and get involved in the $10,000 Main Event.

$109 Sunday Million Final Table Results

Rank Player Country Bounties Prize Total Prize
1 Patrice “pAtcAsh83” Brandt United Kingdom $20,611 $59,217 $79,828
2 Pablos701 Brazil $6,322 $59,212 $65,534
3 kj631 Ukraine $3,353 $43,804 $47,157
4 LLEVENOMA Argentina $4,844 $30,066 $34,910
5 ratajpoker Poland $5,041 $21,125 $26,166
6 ukr46 Romania $4,222 $14,439 $18,661
7 Felipe “lipe piv” Boianovsky Brazil $2,247 $10,176 $12,423
8 sunnym4nn Germany $4,700 $7,223 $11,923
9 Isaev Vlad Mexico $873 $5,141 $6,014

The 9,114 entrants meant there was a substantial overlay on the $1 million guarantee, which is something of a rarity in the Sunday Million. Only 79 of those starters made it through to Day 2, with a mere nine of those reaching the final table.

Mexico-based “Isaev Vlad” crashed out in ninth for a $6,014 score. Finding themselves short-stack and looking down at ace-queen, “Isaev Vlad” had the perfect spot to commit the last of their chips, or so they thought. “ukr46” raised to 5,500,000 from under the gun with ace-six of hearts, “Isaev Vlad” called all-in for slightly less, “ratajpoker” called in the small blind with king-queen of diamonds. Both active players checked down the flop and turn, with “ukr46” improving to a seven-high straight on the river; “ratajpoker” folded to a river bet.

Simone Andrian Crowned Champ of Sizzling PokerStars Summer Festival in Malta

Everyone else, with bounties included, walked away with five-figure hauls. “sunnym4nn” of Germany was the next player out of the door, despite being the chip leader going into eight-handed play. “sunnym4nn” four-bet jammed for 24 effective big blinds with king-queen clubs only for “kj631” to wake up with aces. The aces held, and “sunny4mnn” became the second shortest stack.

The very next hand, “sunnym4nn” and “kj631” battled again, and with almost the same hands. “sunnym4nn” held king-queen of hearts, and “kj631” had pocket rockets in back-to-back hands. After flopping a pair of kings, “sunnym4nn” eventually found a fold on the river but was left with fewer than ten big blinds.

“kj631” then got their hands on the rest of “sunnym4nn”‘s stack when the latter jammed with pocket queens, “kj631” reshoved with pocket jacks, and the board gifted “sunnym4nn” a set of queens but a rivered straight for “kj631”

Felipe Boianovsky
Felipe Boianovsky

The recent $10,300 Spring Championship Of Online Poker (SCOOP) Main Event champion, Felipe “lipe piv” Boianovsky, was the next player to find themselves void of chips. The Brazilian was own to less than 2.5 big binds, and he called them off with queen-nine of clubs after “LLEVENOMA” opened with pocket jacks. “Pablos701” called from the big blind, but folded to a flop continuation-bet. Those jacks held, and Boianovsky was gone.

The final six became five when “ukr46” of Romania came unstuck in a cruel hand. “kj631” min-raised to 7,000,000 with jack-ten of clubs, “Pablos701” responded with a 48,623,680 all-in three bet from the cutoff, “ukr46” called all-in for 37,485,582, and “kj631” folded. “ukr46” turned over a pair of kings, but “Pablos701” has the bullets! The five community cards were void of drama, and “ukr46” was relieved of their stack.

Poland’s “ratajpoker” fell in fifth at the hands of “LLEVENOMA.” “ratajpoker” open-shoved for 11 big blinds with ace-trey of hearts, and “LLEVENOMA” called with pocket kings. “LLEVENOMA” flopped top set, and “ratajpoker” was drawing dead on the turn.

“LLEVENOMA” crashed by the wayside in fourth despite winning “ratajpoker”‘s chips. First, they got a little too frisky in a battle of the blinds with Brandt, which cost them around half of their stack. They then open-shoved for 16 big blinds from the small blind with king-nine of diamonds, only to lose a coinflip against Brandt’s pocket sevens.

Heads-up was set when “kj631” fell by the wayside in third place, a finish good for a cool $47,157. Brandt opened 12,000,000 with queen-six from the small blind, and “kj631” called in the big blind with jack-ten of spades. Brandt continued for 4,800,000 on the queen-ace-deuce flop, and “kj631” called. Brandt check-called an 11,583,000 bet on the trey of spades turn, which put two spades out there. An offsuit jack completed the board, Brandt checked, “kj631” jammed for 53,037,626, and Brandt tank-called to bust the all-in player.

That hand gave Brandt a massive 382,240,738 to 73,459,262 chip advantage over “Pablos701,” and it didn’t take him too long to finish the job.

“Pablos701” won the first pot, which was a large one, but then it was one-way traffic in Brandt’s favor for a while. “Pablos701” began clawing his way back into contention but Brandt’s run-good shone through in the end.

The final hand saw “Pablos701” min-raise to 10,000,000, and Brandt call. Brandt check-caled a 5,724,000 continuation bet on the trey-deuce-queen flop with two diamonds. An offsuit ace on the turn was check-called by Brandt to the tune of 27,750,800. An offsuit six on the river saw Brandt check again, “Pablos701” overbet jammed for 145,027,724, and Brandt called. “Pablos701” had a legitimate hand in ace-ten, but Brandt had backed into two pair with his ace-six. Game over.

Kick Offers Users the Ability to Turn Off Gambling Streams

Kick logo

The streaming platform Kick has given all users the option to choose whether they prefer to view gambling streams while perusing the site’s different channels.

Co-founder Ed Craven announced Friday that as part of a series of updates to the site, Kick was removing “unnecessary exposure” to gambling content. He also said that users would have the ability to “toggle” gambling (and hot tub) streams and thereby remove them from their recommended feed and search results.

Craven followed up on the tweet early Monday morning and confirmed that the changes had been implemented.

Gambling streams have been a divisive topic over the past year or so. Twitch, the leading streaming platform, banned unregulated gambling streams last year, providing the motivation for some streamers to abandon the platform.

Kick has much deeper roots in the gambling world—its co-founders helped create Stake, an online crypto-based gambling platform, and were responsible for celebrities such as Trainwreck and xQc making the switch to the new platform.

Kick has also embodied the ambition to become more streamer-friendly than Twitch, whether the streamers show gambling content or not. They offer 95/5 revenue splits for paid subscribers, whereas Twitch is 50/50 and YouTube is 70/30. They also pay hourly stipends to streamers, though the exact pay is based on different criteria such as viewer count, hours streamed, and CPM.

14 Netflix shows that transformed Canadians’ hobbies and interests

14 Netflix shows that transformed Canadians' hobbies and interests

If you’ve been streaming Netflix, chances are you’ve experienced what is commonly known as the Netflix Effect. Now, what exactly is this “Netflix Effect” you may ask? This phenomenon refers to the way in which the streaming platform’s captivating content influences the real world through factors such as our consumption habits, binge-watching behaviours, or even, the emergence of unexpecting trends. This left us wondering…which Netflix shows and documentaries played a significant influence on Canadians, and in what ways?

We’re closing out our Netflix tab and pulling up Google Trends to find the most influential shows and documentaries, according to Canada’s search volumes. Grab your popcorn, sit back, and relax, as we uncover the 14 Netflix originals that are inspiring Canadians to explore new skills or hobbies!

Lights, camera, action! 14 shows that introduced Canadians into new interests

Sports, arts, languages, oh my! The Netflix Effect left the digital world and seeped into the minds of thousands of Canadians as it ignited many new passions of countless Canadians, throughout the nation.

The Queen’s Gambit rightfully takes the throne (pun totally intended) and claims checkmate as the most influential Netflix series, with a total of five breakout searches when the series aired back in 2020. With breakout searches (search term grew by more than 5000%) like “how to castle in chess”, “chess moves cheat sheet”, “instant chess”, “lego chess set”, and “chessboard”, it’s safe to say that Canadians were eager to get their hands on the game to become the next chess champion.

Give me a C! Give me an H! Double E! R! What’s that spell? Cheer! That’s right, the Cheer docuseries flies high and sticks the landing in second place. The nation caught the infectious feel-good team spirit and sought to partake in the sport, as indicated by breakout searches such as “summer camp”, “cheer jumping”, and “cheerleading gyms”. For those less inclined to perform a few back handsprings and wanted to shake some pom-poms instead, “cheerleading movies” also soared by 5000%.

Flexing (their muscles) at third, the Korean reality competition show, Physical: 100, wins the bronze medal. The shredded contestants’ inspirational mind-over-matter mindset resonated with Canadians as they searched how to get into the sports of “mixed martial arts”, “wrestling”, and “competitive bodybuilding” across the country. The workout regime doesn’t end there – “Korean – spoken language” also emerged as a breakout search, indicating that residents are working out their minds as well.

Swiping left, swiping left, ah! Super like! While dating may not be considered a conventional hobby, it has become a time-consuming pastime for those who are seeking their perfect match.

Contrary to the premise of Tinder Swindler, the dating app blew up as search queries like “Tinder app download”, “Tinder gold promo code,” and “best pickup lines for Tinder” shot up by 5000% when the documentary was released. But before you judge Canadians for turning a blind eye to the key takeaway of the film, “Tinder account verification” soared by 700% on Google during that time period.

Finishing up the top five is none other than 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible. The mountaineering documentary piqued the interest of the nature-loving nation, sparking search trends for “mountaineering sport”, “Rocky Mountains”, and “crampons” (ice climbing footwear), in late 2021. What better country to embark on this new hobby than our very own Canadian Rockies, eh?

From spectators to participants: how Netflix inspired Canadians to try uncommon sports over the years

Take me out to the…speedcubing tournament? As Netflix continues to pump out sports docuseries and documentaries, Canadians have been tuning in and trying out these unconventional sports over the last four years (2019-2023). Starting from reverse chronological order, let’s begin in the year of 2019.

Revving its engines in 2019, Formula 1: Drive to Survive accelerated race car driving into the spotlight for countless viewers. Although it’s quite an expensive and formidable sport, Canadians have searched for “driving simulators” near them since season 1 premiered.

In 2020, Cheer, The Speed Cubers, and The Queen’s Gambit led viewers to explore new physical and mental workouts. From performing pikes to honing critical thinking and motor skills through chess and speedcubing (the art of solving a Rubik’s Cube or other twisty related puzzles in the shortest time possible), it was quite the year of diverse challenges!

The sky was the limit in 2021 as 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible as Canadians desired to get their hands (or feet) on some crampons. Similar to Formula 1, this sport is a lot trickier to embark on, but definitely attainable for nature and adrenaline enthusiasts out there. After all, nothing is impossible, right?

Blown Away blew the minds of thousands as glassblowing was introduced to the general population in 2022. While some view it as a form of art rather than a sport, artists consider it the extreme sport of the art world. Canadians felt they were up for the challenge as they sought out “glassblowing workshops” and “glassblowing classes” when season one aired.

Netflix continues to hit the ground running by producing a handful of new sports docuseries this year: Break Point, Physical: 100, and Full Swing. While some may argue that tennis and golf are mainstream sports, it’s undeniable that Netflix contributed to their surge in popularity among the general population. Tennis-related searches were record-breaking, including “tennis skirts and dress”, and “tennis balls”, with a 450% increase when part one of Break Point was released. Full Swing prompted Canadians to search for a “professional golfer career”, perhaps, leading the country to explore a potential career for themselves. Lastly, as mentioned earlier, Physical: 100 reintroduced the sports of mixed martial arts, wrestling, and bodybuilding to Canadians; with search queries skyrocketed over 5000% for each of these sports.

Methodology

To find out what the most influential Netflix shows and documentaries were, we used Google Trends to analyze the search volumes during the time period each Netflix show and documentary aired. We compiled a list of the top 14 due to data availability and scored each show or documentary by the number of breakout searches.

Please note that results are based on Google Trend searches conducted within Canada. Our rankings are not related to worldwide or pop culture popularity.

The data was collected in June 2023.

Julio Belluscio Denies Host of Stars on the Way to Winning His Maiden Bracelet

Julio Belluscio Denies Host of Stars on the Way to Winning His Maiden Bracelet

After three days of mixed game action, Julio Belluscio defeated Federico Quevedo in heads-up play to win Event #73: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet at the 2023 World Series of Poker in the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. The popular mix of big bet variants attracted a record field of 377 runners to generate a prize pool of $836,600.

Belluscio took home the top prize of $190,240, along with his first bracelet, and more than doubling his previous WSOP earnings total of $90,339.

Event #73: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet Final Table Results

Place Name Country Prize
1 Julio Belluscio Argentina $190,240
2 Federico Quevedo Costa Rica $117,517
3 Benny Glaser United Kingdom $78,939
4 Tomasz Gluszko Poland $54,118
5 Erick Lindgren United States $37,901
6 Hye Park United States $27,130
7 Anthony Zinno United States $19,857

Calling His Shot

“This year, I expected to win,” said Belluscio, who mentioned in his post-win interview that he’s been doing this for 15 years, and he came into this summer’s WSOP with renewed confidence.

“When I have chips, I affect all the players because they never know what to do against me.”

Belluscio also credited his rail with “making him feel comfortable and big” during his final table run and acknowledging that having his friends and family there made all the difference, going so far as to say, “If I make the Main Event final table, then you will see a real rail. I will spend $100,000 to fly all my friends and family from Argentina here, and they will be making too much noise.”

Final Table

Multiple bracelet winners graced this year’s final table, including the shortest stack to start, Anthony Zinno, who would be the first to exit the final seven when a rough river card made his opponent a straight and eliminated his opportunity to chop the low in PLO8.

Next out was Hye Park, who would fall to the eventual champ, Belluscio.

Erick Lindgren
Erick Lindgren

Two-time bracelet winner, Erick Lindgren made his exit in fifth place. Lindgren bagged the Day 1 chip lead and stayed around the top of the counts throughout Days 2 and 3. However, Lindgren mentioned he couldn’t get any momentum going and took a big hit at the final table when he called off a large percentage of his stack in PLO 8.

Tomasz Gluszko was out in fourth after most of his stack went to Belluscio as well in Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw.

Federico Quevedo

Three-handed play was all about Belluscio, as he would chop away at five-time bracelet winner Benny Glaser multiple times and finished off the runner-up Quevedo in three heads-up hands. The last of which saw Quevedo all-in for one pot-sized bet before the flop.

This concludes live coverage of this championship event from PokerNews. Congratulations to Belluscio. Stay tuned to PokerNews throughout the remainder of the 2023 WSOP schedule, as our team is providing industry-leading coverage of all bracelet-awarding events.

Day 35 of the 2023 World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas was the day every poker grinder was looking forward to. Why? Because it was today that the $10,000 World Series of Poker shuffled up and dealt for the first time.

The 2006 WSOP Main Event champion Jamie Gold got things underway, starting the ball rolling in poker’s most prestigious tournament and one that could very well break the attendance record set during’s Gold’e reign.

Israel’s Yehuda Dayan (389,900) bagged the overnight chip lead, with Doug Polk (281,900) finishing fourth in chips.

Julio Belluscio is the champion of Event #73: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet after overcoming a 377-strong field. Belluscio sat down on Day 3 11th from 24 in chips, and navigated his way through the shark-infested waters to where victory awaited. Belluscio is now $190,240 richer than a few days ago, plus they also have a shiny gold bracelet on their wrist.

Only four players stand between Frenchman Jeremy Oleon (98,100,000) and him becoming the champion of Event #74: $1,000 Mini Main Event. Some 428 players sat down for Day 2 but only five had chips in front of them when time was called on proceedings.

Oleon shot to the top of the chip counts late on Day 2 when he eliminated Marius Iftimia. However, his near 100 million stack contains only 33 big blinds due to the faster structure of this tournament.

Jennifer Abad (80,000,000) returns in second place, with Oliver Berens (63,300,000), Josh Reichard (55,900,000), and Bradley Gafford (18,400,000) rounding out the top five.

What to Expect on Day 36 of the 2023 WSOP

For the first time since the first cards were pitched at the 2023 WSOP, there are no new events entering the mix. Why? Because all of the attention is on Event #76: $10,000 WSOP Main Event World Championship. Indeed, no new live events start until July 7.

In addition to Day 1b of the Main Event, Event #74: $1,000 Mini Main Event will crown its champion, while Event #75: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better will play down to the final five hopefuls.

Dayan Leads, Polk Close Behind After Day 1a of $10,000 WSOP Main Event No-Limit Hold'em World Championship

The most anticipated poker tournament of the summer is upon us as Day 1a of Event #76: $10,000 WSOP Main Event No-Limit Hold’em World Championship at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) kicked off today and drew over a thousand players throughout five two-hour levels of action.

Leading the way is Israel’s Yehuda Dayan with a monstrous stack of 389,900 as he looks to add to his just $10,504 in live earnings, followed by other big stacks including bracelet winner Shota Nakanishi (360,100) and poker personality and recent Heads Up Championship runner-up Doug Polk (282,000).

Four Main Event champions played Day 1a and all four managed to bag: Joe Cada (2009), Martin Jacobson (2014), Damian Salas (2020) and Jamie Gold (2006), who WSOP Vice President Jack Effel joked was the only person who doesn’t want the Main Event attendance record broken this year.

Some of the notables who will return for Day 2 on Day 2abc on July 7 include Poker Hall of Famers John Hennigan and Billy Baxter, four-time bracelet winner Dominik Nitsche, six-time bracelet winner Shaun Deeb, poker coach Faraz Jaka, poker author Jim McManus, and high rollers David Peters, Sean Winter and Jake Schindler.

Gold Kicks Off a Day Full of Bad Beats & Heartbreak

There was high energy going into the first day of an event that is expected that break the attendance record set in 2006 when Gold won the Main Event for $12 million. It was fitting then that Gold kicked things off with a shuffle up and deal announcement where he wished this year’s Main Event players good luck “except when you’re the last person at the final table against me, then I do not wish you so well.”

It didn’t take long for dreams to be crushed in poker’s most prestigious event. Israel’s Idan The One started his first Main Event off nicely by taking down a decent pot preflop with a four-bet. But things turned quickly in another four-bet pot where The One held kings only to run into the aces of Ruben Correia.

2023 World Series of Poker Hub

Bookmark this page! All you need to know about the 2023 WSOP is here.

Shortly after losing half his stack, the two tangled once again as The One five-bet shoved for his tournament life as Correia called. The One’s nightmare had come true as his pocket kings were again dominated by the same opponent’s aces to send the Main Event hopeful out in just the second level of play. The One was in visible agony and spent an hour against the wall with his head in his hands as he processed the devastating beat and realized he will not be the one to win the 2023 Main Event.

That wasn’t the only cooler of the day. In one of the final hands before dinner break, Steven Piper managed to make aces full of kings holding AA, losing only to pocket kings for quads. That’s exactly what Gary Horn had as he sent the Piper singing.

There were also success stories on Day 1a, including from none other than Gold, who managed to chip up nicely throughout the day as he battled in the Silver section of Horseshoe. Poker coach Faraz Jaka, meanwhile, got well above starting stack after picking up aces to eliminate Tyler Matzen.

In the same section, Polk built up a stack at a table that included young poker star Landon Tice, who wasn’t as fortunate and busted not long after a boat over boat collision against Michael Wilklow that may have resembled the literal car crash Polk was in today.

Other players who didn’t survive the day include 2021 Poker Players Championship runner-up Ryan Leng, Employees Event runner-up James Urbanic, Utah all-time money leader Jared Griener, sports card specialist Jared Bleznick and 2010 Main Event third-place finisher Joseph Cheong.

On the lighter side of things, Player of the Year contender Shaun Deeb, known by his peers as a king of slow rolls, got a bit of karma he was accidentally slow rolled by Juha Helppi. The Finnish bracelet winner hadn’t realized he had the best hand after calling a river bet from Deeb, who warned the table that “you know I’m still going to slow roll any of you any chance I get.”

There are still three starting flights that need to play before Day 2 of the Main Event. Day 1b will kick off at noon local time on July 4 and will follow the same structure as Day 1a with five two-hour levels and a 75-minute dinner break after Level 3.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team is out in full force and will be back on-site tomorrow for more coverage of what will likely be a historic WSOP Main Event.
