Poker Power Cofounder Gets Mainstream Praise In Time Magazine Profile

Since its inception in 2020, Poker Power has been lauded for its efforts to help women learn to take risks and make profitable investments and business decisions through the game of poker.

Ulitizing boot camps, workshops and online lessons spearheaded by an accomplished team of female poker coaches, Poker Power has helped countless women “take control” and “think like a champion,” on and off the felt.

Three years into the venture, Poker Power and its mission to “teach women how to play Texas Hold ’em to compete and succeed in business, finance, and life — all in a fun, supportive, and safe-to-fail environment,” are getting mainstream attention.

Jenny Just, cofounder of Poker Power, was profiled by Time Magazine this week in a piece, titled “This Female Billionaire Thinks the Secret to Women’s Wealth Is Poker,” that explored the ways that poker can help women navigate the male-dominated business world.

“Since 2020, she has started a company, Poker Power, hired a staff, woven together a network of female instructors, built an app, bankrolled a number of high-profile events, and introduced about 32,000 women and girls to poker across 40 countries from Monaco to Kenya,” reads the Time profile, which was published on July 24.

Helping Women Take Risks

Before turning her attention to poker, Just worked at the Chicago-based firm O’Connor & Associates before founding the multibillion-dollar investment firm Peak6 with her colleague and future husband, Matt Hulsizer, according to Time, which noted that Just “has tried to get women more comfortable around money” throughout her career.

Just, who cofounded Poker Power during the COVID-19 pandemic with her daughter, Juliette Hulsizer, is passionate that poker can teach women valuable lessons about the business world and taking risks in life.

“If I don’t have those experiences of trying and failing and taking a risk and failing again, it gets harder and harder as I get older,” Just told Time. “I always say: if I had poker, I would have taken 10 years of fails out of my career.”

Since its founding, Poker Power, previously styled as Poker Powher, has grown into a recognizable brand repped by many of the most notable female poker players in the game. Longtime pro Xuan Liu and women’s chess champion Jen Shahade serve on Poker Power’s advisory board, while the likes of Kyna England, Lisa Pickell, and AJ Rudolph all work as instructors.

Return of the PokerStars x Poker Power Women’s Bootcamp

Poker Power has worked with brands like PokerStars to help more women get involved in poker, a game with a community that is 95% male.

Last year, the two brands partnered for a PokerStars x Poker Power Women’s Bootcamp that took place online and gave women the chance to compete for a Platinum Pass to the PokerStars Players No-Limit Hold’em Championship (PSPC) in the Bahamas.

That boot camp is returning this year and will take place July 31 through September 28. The eight-week boot camp, which will focus on modules like determination and discipline, will award prizes including an all-expenses paid trip to EPT Cyprus and the chance to win a package for the EPT Prague Main Event later this year.

Podcast – Blair Hull episode #4

Podcast - Blair Hull episode #4

Blair Hull was known as the first “BP” or “Big Player”.  Ken Uston wrote a book called, “The Big Player” after he replaced Blair in that role.  Taking what he learned from counting cards Blair moved to a much bigger casino with higher stakes, the options exchange.

We discuss three big gambles in Blair’s life.  In 1987 the markets were all crashing, and Blair walked onto the exchange floor saying to himself that his job was to make a price on both buy or sell.  There were only people wanting to sell, and like it or not he had to give them a price, and buy what they were unloading. Second we talk about his decision to run for US Senate, and was beat in the primary by a young organizer named Barak Obama.  Last we talk about how Blair came out of retirement when he saw that people were buying options as if they were lottery tickets.

BAD BEAT – Is This The Craziest Online Poker Hand of the Year?

BAD BEAT - Is This The Craziest Online Poker Hand of the Year?

Is there ever a right way to play pocket jacks? Well, PokerStars ambassador Arlie Shaban thought he had finally found the answer while playing in the Sunset Series on PokerStars Ontario.

Shaban found himself on the right side of a set-over-set-over-set encounter, but lady luck had another idea for the streamer in what could be the craziest online poker hand of the year.

19+. Gambling can be addictive. Please play responsibly.

Everything You Need to Know about PokerStars Ontario

In the first level of Phase 1 of the $20,000 guaranteed Sunday Saver, Shaban picked up pocket jacks and found himself licking his lips in delight while in a four-way all-in.

Shaban had pocket jacks on the J83 flop, which was the best hand anyone could have at the point. He was up against pocket queens as well as a set of threes and eights.

After the flop and K turn, Shaban was the huge favorite heading to the river, but a fourth eight hit the felt to give one of his opponents quads for the win in sickening fashion.

The Canadian was left speechless for a moment before letting out a meme-worthy look to the camera.

To quote Shaban, “That was disgusting!”

Epic Comeback: “shashOs21” Bags Top 888poker Mystery Bounty and $32K Overall

Epic Comeback: "shashOs21" Bags Top 888poker Mystery Bounty and $32K Overall

The Festival Online series is running at 888poker, and there is no doubt that “shashOs21” will look back on the series with fond memories even if they do not cash in any of the remaining events.

“shashOs21” was one of 1,088 entrants in Event #31 Mystery Bounty, a $150,000 guaranteed affair that ultimately paid out $163,200. The champion elect not only navigated their way to the eight-handed final table but did so having captured the $15,000 top bounty, meaning they were guaranteed a healthy return on their $160 investment regardless of their finishing position at the final table.

As it happens, the Cypriot came out on top and walked away with a total prize worth $32,066, more than double what “ivanmfilho” took home for their second-place finish!

The Festival Online $150,000 Mystery Bounty Final Table Chip Counts

Place Player Country Bounties Chips Big Blinds
1 cunsy15 United Kingdom $2,005 2,350,247 59
2 OlaColaMosa   $576 2,055,730 51
3 ivanmfilho Brazil $2,076 2,001,100 50
4 shashOs21 Cyprus $16,255 1,786,143 48
5 nuncanemvi Brazil $978 1,191,459 29
6 WomenAreGood   $1,002 811,559 20
7 bringiton405 United Kingdom $1,003 371,750 9
8 Scholomnce Montenegro $576 312,012 8

The final table action started with a bang and a double elimination. Ten minutes after play began, “Scholomance” open-shoved for 14 big blinds with pocket nines, “bringiton405” called off their 13.3 big blinds with ace-king, before “ivanmfilho” called from the small blind with pocket queens, covering both at-risk players. The queens held, and two players headed to the rail.

“cunsy15” sat down at the final table as the chip leader, but nothing went their way, and they had to make do with a sixth-place finish worth $5,242. “cunsy15” dropped to only four big blinds after backing into top pair on the river and calling a shove made by “OlaColaMosa” who had turned trip sevens. The last of “cunsy14″‘s chips went in with ace-eight, ultimately losing to the jack-five of “OlaColaMosa.”

The final five became four when “nuncanemvi” ripped in their last six big blinds with king-jack and lost to the lowly eight-four of chip leader “ivanmfilho” courtesy of a four on the flop.

Find Out If Alexandra Botez’s $10K River Bluff Worked Against Phil Ivey With 888Ride

“WomenAreGood” crashed out in fourth at the hands of the hot-running “ivanmfilho.” From the button, “ivanmfilho” opened to 2.3 big blinds before instantly calling the 19.5 big blind all-in shove from “WomenAreGood.” Why was the call instantaneous? Because “ivanmfilho” held pocket aces. Those aces crushed the all-in player’s dominated ace-nine, and the tournament was suddenly down to only three.

Three-handed play lasted a mere five minutes, ending when “OlaColaMosa” jammed for six big blinds on the button with pocket fives and lost a flip to “ivanmfilho,” who held ace-queen.

“ivanmfilho” started the one-on-one battle against “shashOs21” with a seemingly unsurmountable 126.6 big blind to 9.4 big blind advantage. However, nothing is guaranteed in poker tournaments until you have all of the chips in play in your stack.

“shashOs21” doubled on the first hand with ace-king versus ace-queen, but that saw their stack dwindle again, unable to dent their opponent’s colossal stack.

The ace-five of “shashOs21” cracked the pocket kings of “ivanmfilho” and most things went their way from then on.

The final hand took place during the 41st level of the tournament and started with a min-raise from “shashOs21” with king-eight of diamonds, a three-bet to 7.1 big blinds from “ivanmfilho” with ace-eight offsuit, and a call.

A flop reading four-six-king rainbow saw “ivanmfilho” lead for 4.8 big blinds, which “shashOs21” called. “ivanmfilho” checked when an eight landed on the river before moving all-in for 19.8 big blinds in total after “shashOs21” bet 12 big blinds. “shashOs21” called with their two pair, which held as an offsuit seven completed the community cards.

In April, Wisconsin crusher Josh Reichard won his 14th Circuit ring to tie Maurice Hawkins at the top of this. The next month, Hawkins, who recently ran deep in the 2023 WSOP Main Event, won a 15th ring to re-take the lead.

Meanwhile, Lowery picked up three rings in four months to leap-frog Engel and move to third, trailing only Hawkins and Reichard. Engel now ties with Lowery in the race to the top of the all-time Circuit ring list that hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.

Engel, who is also a two-time bracelet winner, won his first Circuit ring in 2007 when he took down a $300 No-Limit Hold’em event at WSOPC Atlantic City for $63,018. Engel’s 12th ring came from a February 2022 victory in a $500 WSOPC NV/NJ PLO event for $14,412.

Michael Addamo on Getting Into Poker Through Chess, Pursuing the Arts

If you’re a high-stakes poker player, there are few opponents you’d be more unhappy seeing at your table than Michael Addamo. Indeed, Ali Imsirovic joked when accepting the Players Choice for Toughest Opponent at the 2022 Global Poker Awards that he only won “because Addamo isn’t here.”

Overbets, triple-barrels, seven-figure scores. These are all things that come to mind when thinking of Addamo, who since pivoting from chess to poker in 2012 has racked up over $22 million in Hendon Mob earnings to put him atop the Australia all-time money list.

During the fall of 2021, Addamo went on one of the most notable runs in modern poker history first taking down three PokerGO High Rollers before winning his third and fourth World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets in Event #38: $50,000 High Roller Event #87: $100,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em, while also nabbing an ARIA High Roller victory in between.

Michael Addamo holds his fourth WSOP bracelet in November 2021.

Through just nine live cashes between September and November 2021, six of which were outright victories, Addamo walked away with $9.4 million as he cemented his reputation as one of the toughest and most skilled players on the high-roller circuit.

But there’s more to Addamo than turn bets three times the size of the pot and unfathomable bluffs. The 29-year-old Australian cares deeply about ethics and has been vegan for the better half of a decade. More recently, Addamo started exploring his creative side through the arts.

PokerNews recently caught up with Addamo, who notably did not play at the 2023 WSOP but will be sure to turn up at one of the next high-roller stops.

How did you discover poker and what about it attracted you?

I was quite a prolific chess player growing up. I thought my skillset could be transferred across to poker quite naturally, and I had heard others had done the same. I was enticed by the in-depth strategy and intricacies of each spot, and I loved observing the patterns and exploiting my opponent’s mistakes.

I had a lot of self-belief I could do extremely well at the game, and ultimately make it to the high stakes, nothing would stop me.

What made you decide to pursue poker over chess?

The financial aspect of poker made it much more appealing, and the fact you have to put your own hard-earned money on the line for each of your decisions, I found enthralling. You really had to have confidence in your decisions or pay the ultimate price. I am highly competitive and I love that side of poker.

You are constantly cited as one of the most difficult players to play against on the high-stakes circuit. What separates you from your competitors in High Roller events?

There are a lot of really strong and tough opponents. I personally like to use lots of big bet sizings, in spots where the opponent’s ranges are limited to weaker holdings, to extract both maximum value and to garner folds from the weaker parts of my opponent’s holdings.

You’ve demonstrated you have no problem putting your opponents to the test or pulling of huge bluffs with millions of dollars on the line. How do you get your mind off of the money to be able to pull the trigger?

“If I think it is the optimal spot to do so, I have no issues being able to pull the trigger in those big spots.”

I am quite detached to the money side of it when I am playing. I think through each spot logically and make the best decision I can. And if I think it is the optimal spot to do so, I have no issues being able to pull the trigger in those big spots.

A lot of it comes from confidence in my game, I’m able to understand the mechanics of each spot and find the correct value bets and bluffs, or at least to the best of my ability.

You had an incredible run in the Fall of 2021 that saw you winning multiple seven-figure scores and your third and fourth WSOP bracelets What did that run do for you in terms of confidence or setting yourself up financially?

“I feel extremely grateful for achieving that level of success and it is certainly something I will never forget.”

That fall I achieved incredible tournament success, something I could not have imagined I would have come close to attaining.

Obviously, there is quite a lot of luck involved in a run like that, but I also felt at the top of my game and in tune with each spot and was able to reach a level of hyper-focus throughout that series.

I feel extremely grateful for achieving that level of success and it is certainly something I will never forget.

What’s something unique about you that not a lot of people know about?

I have been vegan for six years, I really care for animals, and ethics are really important to me. Poker is quite an individualistic pursuit, so I care about giving back to the community as a whole.

In my spare time, I am very active, I like to play various sports, and I have also recently taken a liking to more creative things like drawing, dancing, and improv.
