Alexandra Botez & 888poker Ambassadors Make Day 2 of Main Event

Alexandra Botez & 888poker Ambassadors Make Day 2 of Main Event

The 888poker Ambassadors and StreamTeam members have taken their shot at achieving World Series of Poker Main Event glory across Day 1c and Day 1d, with several of them making it over the first hurdle.

The likes of Aaron Barone and Nick Eastwood made it through to Day 2 from the third starting flight while a whole host of ambassadors made it through from Day 1d.

Chess superstar Alexandra Botez is also donning the 888poker patch throughout the Main Event and cruised through to the next stage. Unfortunately, Vivian Saliba, Alexandre Mantovani and were the players representing the poker platform who crashed out in the early stages.

Before Day 1c got underway, the 888poker pros had a partial meeting where the goal set was to “just don’t bust on Day 1,” said Barone, who is 888poker’s latest StreamTeam member.

One interesting hand that Barone played on Wednesday was where he ended up six-bet jamming ace-king offsuit.

“At 200/400/400. I opened to 900, a middle position player flatted before the button reraised it 3,600 from a stack of 45,000,” commented Barone. “I tanked and four-bet to 9,800, which folded out middle position. The button quickly made it 20,000. I thought for a while about whether I’m ‘supposed to fold.’ whether he/the average person will ever have four-bet folds here, and whether ripping early in the main is a massive punt. Online I sigh-shove and don’t think much about it. But live? I wasn’t sure. Even after, the responses to this hand have been mixed.”

“Ultimately, I decided my image was too splashy to do anything other than jam. Not only had I been opening a lot and three-betting more than anyone else at the table, but that four-bet wasn’t my first of the day. Might have been my third or fourth, so I shove, and he snap-folded.”

Barone is playing his first-ever Main Event, despite playing professionally for the last 15 years. The American is usually found on the virtual felt, where he streams his sessions on his own Twitch channel.

Barone, who made the money at the record-breaking PokerNews Cup a few days ago, finished Day 1c with a stack of 79,800.

His colleague Eastwood faired just as well, ending the session slightly better with a final chip count of 80,600.

Botez, Caue Moura, Lucia Navarro and Josh Manley were the 888poker players in action from the final Day 1 session and all four bagged and tagged a stack for Day 2d.

Botez collected the most chips through the first five levels and ended the night with 117,000. Moura and Navarro finished with 104,800 and 86,500, respectively. Manley props up the ambassadors but still has plenty of play in his Day 2d starting stack of 28,700.

For StreamTeam member Manley, Day 1d was a bit of a rollercoaster of a day.

“Day 1 this year was a grind and a half and not a good one either,” said Manley. “I was honestly card dead for about nine hours, with the exception of a few hands, which ended up being coolers in the wrong direction.”

Towards the end of the night, the Brit was down to just 9,000 chips but was able to steal a few pots to chip up. He then had his tournament life on the line after he moved all in on the river with just ace-high.

“I had one very scary bluff where I had Ax9x on the button with just a 20 big blind stack of 12,000.” detailed the streamer. “It folded to me, I raised, and the big blind called. The flop ran out KxQx8. I bet small, and my opponent called. The turn was 3x, and I bet around 40% pot, setting up a river all-in. They called the turn bet and thankfully check-folded when I moved all in for a little less than pot on the 2x river.”

Soon after, he flopped a king-high straight and received a full double-up.

“Just like that, I was up to just over 30,000, which, after having 9,000, felt like millions. I ended up bagging 28,700, and I’m planning to run it all the way up on Day 2!”

If you’re in Las Vegas this summer for the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) and are looking for some old-school mixed-game poker action, look no further than the annual Big August Rec. Gambling Excursion (BARGE) meet-up festival taking place July 17-22.

The BARGE festival will take place at Westgate Las Vegas and will feature everything from a California Lowball tournament to a Triathlon of Gambling Blackjack Tournament.

Action at this year’s BARGE festival will kick off on July 17 with the David Lawful and Marc Gilutin Memorial Charity Tournament, a $130 buy-in event with $60 re-buys that will play as a No-Limit Hold’em Crapshoot. Before that a BARGE board meeting will take place via Zoom.

The next day, a $100 buy-in California Lowball tournament will take place ahead of a $130 Limit 6 Game event later in the evening.

Other highlights early in the festival include a Team CHORSE event that costs $480 per team to enter, a $35 BARGE Annual Dinner featuring Women in Poker Hall of Famer Maria Ho as a guest speaker and a $60 Triathlon of Gambling Blackjack Tournament that is subject to Westgate confirmation.

Hustler Casino Live to Host Nosebleed PLO Games w/ Tom Dwan and Nik Airball

Hustler Casino Live to Host Nosebleed PLO Games w/ Tom Dwan and Nik Airball

Hustle Casino Live is changing things up a bit with some upcoming massive stakes pot-limit Omaha games headlined by Tom Dwan and Nikhil “Nik” Airball.

The action runs July 17-21 on the popular live-stream cash game show from Hustler Casino in Los Angeles. There will be plenty of huge pots as the blinds will start at $500/$500 with a $2,000 big blind ante.

Full lineups for the games aren’t yet locked in, but there will likely be a number of other familiar faces at the table.

Mixing it Up at Hustler Casino Live

For the past two years, no-limit hold’em has been the game of choice on Hustler Casino Live, and nearly every other poker show. That’s because it is the most popular poker variant in the world. But there is an audience out there for other games, including, as Joey Ingram likes to say, the great game of pot-limit Omaha.

In the past, HCL hosted a few PLO games but at smaller stakes and without the familiar faces. Nick Vertucci, Hustler Casino Live’s co-owner, anticipates a much larger audience this time around given how big the games will play. Ingram will certainly be among the fans in the YouTube chat.

Competing with the $1 Million Games?

In May, Hustler Casino Live hosted four days of $1 million minimum buy-in games and they were a rousing success. Can the upcoming pot-limit Omaha streams compete with those epic games in terms of viewership and fan interest? That is the question that will be answered later this month.

Dwan competed in the most memorable of those $1 million games and won the largest pot in live-stream history — $3.1 million — when he caught “Wes Side” Wesley bluffing. He also won a seven-figure pot against Doug Polk, who was also bluffing.

On the final day of the $1 million games, there were more than 50,000 viewers tuned in throughout much of the night, and the other streams had over 25,000 viewers locked in consistently. There isn’t an expectation for the PLO games to reach those lofty numbers, but the shows could serve as a barometer for PLO’s popularity, and if all goes well, could potentially lead to more PLO on live-streams.

Arizona Grants Three Sports Betting Licenses to Operators

Arizona Grants Three Sports Betting Licenses to Operators

The state of Arizona will allow three sports wagering operators to gain access to the state’s gambling market. As reported by Covers, the Arizona Department of Gaming will start accepting new applications for sports betting licenses in August that will grant the opportunity to three operators to take advantage of the Arizona wagering market.

Application Procedure:

Covers reports that the Arizona Department of Gaming will hold an informational webinar on July 17, 2023 to clarify the application procedure and prepare operators for proper submission of applications that will commence in August. It is also reported that applications will then be assessed for compliance with the state legislation governing the subject gambling field.

License Fee:

As of August 15, 2023, the state regulator for tribal gaming, racing, and sports betting will reportedly be accepting applications for one sports wagering license reserved for Arizona Tribes, as well as two applications for professional sports betting operators. The source reports that the operators will be required to pay the license fee amounting to $750,000 with $100,000 due already with the application. Covers reports that the prospective applicants are still not known but assumes that bet365, Betr, and Tipico may lead the race.

Promising Market:

In any case, three new license holders will be added to the 17 online sports betting companies already operating in the state. With $535.7 million handle reported in April 2023, Arizona seems to be a promising market as the state operators benefited from the handle to increase revenues by almost 9%. Almost the same increase was seen in March 2023; These flat figures experienced over the last 12 month testify to the market stability and justify the reason why sports wagering in Arizona reportedly features strong competition.

Market Revenue Levels:

Indeed, the Arizona Department of Gaming reported that the wagering operators in the state generated $34.3 million in gross gaming revenues in April 2023.  The figure reportedly represents a benchmark for the license applicants to evaluate the speed of the revenue aggregation as the license fee stands at $750,000, as reported.

Market Evaluation:

Also, applicants may be incited to join the race for the license as the April 2023 handle testifies that almost 99% of all bets in the state were placed through online wagering operators. Using the April figures, one can see that 17 online sports betting operators recorded almost a $500 million handle and generated the revenue of around $ 34 million.

Average Revenue Benchmark:

The revenue distribution is not likely to be even among the operators, but a simple calculation implies that each operator generated the average of around $2 million in revenues in April. It means that the new licensees would theoretically have their license costs paid off in less than half a month of operation. Such an assumption may be a driving force for operators to apply for the license and gain access to the lucrative sports betting market of the state of Arizona.

2023 WSOP Day 38: Main Event Shatters Its Attendance Record

2023 WSOP Day 38: Main Event Shatters Its Attendance Record

It is official, the 2023 World Series of Poker Main Event is the largest on record, with more than 9,300 players turning out across four starting flights. The official number of entrants is yet to be determined as late registration remains open until the start of both Day 2abc and 2d.

Day 38 of the 2023 WSOP was all about Event #76: $10,000 WSOP Main Event World Championship. Indeed, this was the online tournament taking place inside the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. More than 4,100 players exchanged $10,000 for 60,000 chips and the chance to become poker’s world champion. The dream is still alive for around 3,200 of the Day 2d players, who return to the action from 12:00 p.m. local time on July 8.

The Greatest Show: Hellmuth and Jungleman Make Grand Entrance into 2023 WSOP Main Event

Nicholas Rigby (408,800) bagged up the Day 1d chip lead, and leads the tournament overall after a stellar day at the felt. If Rigby’s name sounds familiar to you, it is likely because he shot to fame in 2019 after playing the lowly trey-deuce offsuit, and nicknaming it the “dirty diaper!”

Brittney Stout (375,500) is the best-placed female player at this early stage of the Main Event, and will be confident of building on her early success.

Neel Murthy (323,100), Chris “Big Huni” Hunichen (321,200), and Carlos Leiva (318,700) round out the Day 1d top five chip counts.

Plenty of top pros entered the mix on Day 1d, with many progressing to Day 2d.

Chance Kornuth (241,500) continued his impressive hot streak of form, while Men “The Master” Nguyen (221,000) also bagged big.

A host of past Main Event champions joined in the fun, and all but one of them had chips requiring bagging and tagging at the end of the fifth level. Chris Moneymaker (143,100), Joe Hachem (125,300), Qui Nguyen (121,800), and Scotty Nguyen (8,400) are through to Day 2d, but Hossein Ensan came unstuck before the curtain came down on proceedings.

Phil Hellmuth made his usual over-the-top grand entrance, dressed as P. T. Barnum from The Greatest Showman with Dan Cates dressed as his pet lion! Hellmuth progressed with 108,500 chips, but Cates was put back in his cage just after the dinner break.

Two players bust on the first hand of the 2023 WSOP

Imagine paying $10,000 to play Day 1d of the 2023 WSOP and you last precisely one hand!

Big names and big stack aside, Day 1d of the 2023 WSOP Main Event will likely be remembered for a sick start to matters when two players busted during the very first hand!

One player got their 300 big blind stack into the middle with pocket kings and lost to pocket aces, while Mikolaj Zawadzki held pocket eights on a queen-eight-deuce-nine-five board only to commit his stack and discover Jamie Smith held pocket queens for a higher set. Ouch!

What to Expect on Day 39 of the 2023 WSOP

Day 2abc of the Main Event commences at 12:00 p.m. local time and sees more than 3,800 players return to their seats. They will play another five 120-minute levels before calling it a night, with those surviving players joining Day 2ds survivors on July 9.

Two fresh events shuffle up and deal. At 10:00 a.m. local time on July 7, Event #77: $777 Lucky 7’s No-Limit Hold’em (7-Handed) begins. Last year’s event saw 6,903 players create a $3,517,898 prize pool, with Frenchman Gregory Teboul coming out on top and banking $777,777.

Event #78: $1,500 Bounty Pot-Limit Omaha also runs on July 9. Pei Li is the defending champion, having outlasted 1,389 opponents in 2022 on his way to collecting $190,219.

Nicolas ‘Dirty Diaper’ Rigby Bags Overall Lead After Day 1d of Record-Breaking 2023 WSOP Main Event

Nicolas 'Dirty Diaper' Rigby Bags Overall Lead After Day 1d of Record-Breaking 2023 WSOP Main Event

It was a record-setting day at the 2023 World Series of Poker as Day 1d, the final starting flight, amassed over 4,100 entries in Event #76: $10,000 WSOP Main Event World Championship. The old mark of 8,773 entries in 2006 was shattered in the early stages today, with the current number of entries sitting at around 9,350 and counting.

It was nothing short of a frenzy throughout the day, with tables open in all parts of the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas ballrooms, and the energy was certainly felt today more than any other. Chris Moneymaker, widely regarded for starting the initial poker boom back in 2003, kicked things off by welcoming all players to the WSOP Main Event. He was joined by Gene Calden, the oldest player to ever play the Main Event at the ripe age of 100 years young.

As is often the case, the bigger the starting flight, the bigger the chips stacks. Today was no different as Nicholas Rigby finished Day 1d with a whopping stack of 408,000 chips. Rigby, who became known for the ‘dirty diaper’ a couple of years ago, will enter Day 2 as the overall chip leader as the only player to accumulate over 400,000 chips. The Pennsylvania native doesn’t have many tournament results on his resume, but this is one tournament that he excels in. Back in 2019, Rigby went on to finish in 52nd place in the Main Event for $136,100 and gained plenty of recognition for playing his favorite hand, deuce-three offsuit.

Chasing down the leader on Day 1d was Brittney Stout, who had a very entertaining day at the felt. Stout was full of laughter and jokes throughout the day, and who wouldn’t be after bagging a stack of 375,500 chips. Neel Murthy (323,100), high-roller Chris Hunichen (321,000), and Brandon Mincher (317,000) were among the others that topped the leaderboard.

A Three Ring Circus Broke Out on Day 1d

Some people often describe chaos and lots of extracurricular activities as a circus. On Day 1d, there was not only that, but an actual circus made an appearance as well. Phil Hellmuth made his grand appearance at the Main Event as a Stage Master dragging Daniel “Jungleman” Cates dressed as a lion in a cage behind him. Hellmuth was also joined by 17 models, representing the 17 WSOP gold bracelets he has won in his career.

Hellmuth was met with mixed emotions upon his entrance – cheers and applause from his fans who couldn’t wait to snap a picture and murmurs and complaints from those who were just trying to play some poker. Every year it’s a spectacle when Hellmuth enters the Main Event, and this year was nothing different. Hellmuth was moved to the feature table, where he finished the night with 108,500, whereas Cates was eliminated just after the dinner break.

Another thing that never changes is the cold deck that often finds its way into one of the first hands of the day. This year, it happened to be the very first hand. Jamie Smith flopped top set with pocket queens while Mikolaj Zawadzki flopped middle set with pocket eights. All of the chips went into the middle by the river, and Zawadzki was eliminated after not improving. That’s a $10,000 hand!

As for Calden, who made his own history at the WSOP today, his run at the poker table didn’t last very long. The World War II veteran flopped two pair, but his opponent turned a straight when all of the chips went in the middle. Calden was unable to improve, and his Main Event ended in the second level. Calden not only got applause for his service but also for making history on the felt.

Another fan-favorite always is the 2005 Main Event champion Joe Hachem (125,300). The Aussie was once again back at the WSOP and was joined by his son Daniel Hachem (22,400), who, as his dad says, is the best poker player in the family. Both players earned healthy stacks in the early going and will be returning for Day 2d.

Hossein Ensan, Qui Nguyen (121,800), Moneymaker (143,100), and Scotty Nguyen (8,400) were the other previous Main Event champions in the field today and Ensan was the only one that failed to advance to Day 2.

And a circus is not a circus without some shenanigans as well. Midway through the day, Gaston Miculitzki was the beneficiary of a floor ruling that ultimately resulted in a double-up. Miculitzki was facing a bet and put in the wrong amount and then attempted to fold. After the floor ruled that he must call, Miculitzki then went on to turn a set of kings and double up through his opponent.

On the next level, Stephanie Wang was all in on the flop with pocket eights and called by Brian Wilson with just queen-high, no draw. Wilson rivered a pair and started celebrating, which grabbed the attention of the entire ballroom. However, that was soon followed by the celebration of Wang when she realized that she had rivered a flush. Both players laughed it off, and Wang collected the 250 big blind pot.

Everyone that advanced from Day 1d today will have a day off to collect themselves and will be returning to the felt on Saturday, July 8th at 12 p.m. noon local time. July 7 sees Day 2abc take place, where the players from Day 1a, Day 1b, and Day 1c will all join for the next five levels of poker. The action is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. local time, with tables being set up in the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas ballrooms. The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor in full force to bring you all of the updates and highlights from around the tournament room.

The Greatest Show: Hellmuth and Jungleman Make Grand Entrance into 2023 WSOP Main Event

The Greatest Show: Hellmuth and Jungleman Make Grand Entrance into 2023 WSOP Main Event

What would the World Series of Poker Main Event be without a grand entrance from Phil Hellmuth?

The “Poker Brat” showed up for the Day 1b session as P. T. Barnum from The Greatest Showman and was accompanied by his pet lion and aptly nicknamed Dan “Jungleman” Cates.

The reception to Hellmuth’s arrival was warmer this summer, a stark contrast from the chorus of boos that greeted him last year.

“Just a Showman”

Hellmuth and Cates went the extra mile this time around, similar to 2021, where the duo were decked out in Lord of the Rings.

Hellmuth and a caged Cates were followed into the Horseshoe Events Centre by 17 models, all holding up a card with a number from 1 to 17, marking the number of bracelets that Hellmuth has won.

As they entered the tournament room, Katy Perry’s Roar blasted over the speakers while VP of WSOP Jack Effel introduced the two icons.

Late Surge of Player of the Year?

Phil Hellmuth

It’s taken until week six of the WSOP for Hellmuth to crack the top ten in the Player of the Year Standings and could be in the running for getting his first POY banner following a strong end to the series.

He recently extended his bracelet record after taking down Event #72: $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty for $803,818, which saw him crack the upper echelons of the leaderboard as well as breaching the top twenty on the all-time money list.

It would take an incredibly deep run from Hellmuth in the Main Event to boost his chances for POY, something that he hasn’t done for quite some time. His last in-the-money finish in poker’s most famous event was in 2015, where he finished in 417th for $21,786.

Which is Your Favorite Hellmuth Entrance?

Hellmuth has been rocking up to the Main Event in some form of costume for the best part of the last twenty years, with some still entrenched in our brains.

Hellmuth as Gandalf and Julius Caesar are some of the more memorable appearances. However the most notable has to be when Hellmuth rocked up to the Rio as a NASCAR driver. The original plan was for him to arrive in a stock car. However, Hellmuth lost control of the vehicle and had it written off after crashing into a bollard.
