Kevin Martin Talks Poker, Streaming and Big Brother on Latest 888Ride Episode

Kevin Martin Talks Poker, Streaming and Big Brother on Latest 888Ride Episode

888poker has relaunched its popular 888Ride YouTube feature, where David Tuchman invites prominent poker players and figureheads for a drive around Las Vegas, all while quizzing them about anything and everything. Their series proved popular in 2022 and looks set to follow the same trend during the 2023 World Series of Poker, especially when you see the host of stars lined up for the 888Ride experience.

The latest episode sees popular streamer and poker pro Kevin Martin hop into the wagon with Tuchmann, where they discuss Martin’s ascent in the game alongside all things streaming, as well as his time on Big Brother Canada.

Getting Started In Poker

Before becoming one of the most popular poker content creators, Martin worked the night shift as a radio announcer. “I hated it, dude. I hated having a boss, I hated the platform. I quickly was looking for something else.”

Martin found something else when he began playing $1/$2 at his local casino in Canada, something he eventually began doing full-time as he worked up to a $25/hour win rate.

“I was interested in gambling,” he said. “Gambling fascinated me; the idea of risking money for the chance to win more money. I learned that you could be that player with the edge. If you played good poker, you could actually expect a winning return. It just completely enamored my brain and I just got obsessed with it. And still am obsessed.”

One of the First Poker Content Creators

Ironically, Martin did not like the idea of poker content creation when he first heard about it in 2015 from his friend Jaime Staples, one of the pioneers of poker streaming.

“I was like bro, this is a waste of time. What are you going to do, you’re going to make videos? You’re going to start a YouTube channel? I was like, you’re wasting your time,” said Martin. “And very quickly, I watched him start an empire, and I’m like, oh, I should maybe start some poker content.”

Martin acknowledged that creating content while you’re playing poker can be distracting. “It takes your energy; of course it does.”

Accomplishments in Poker

Talking about his accomplishments in poker, Martin noted that “I am good at going and chasing poker adventures and capturing the story and content and telling that story.”

“I put a lot of time into this game and I feel very good about where I’ve gotten,” he said. “And when I started, I was such a fish. Everybody told me to quit. I made my content, I was the worst player ever. 100% I was the worst player. And that inspired me.”

Meeting His Wife on Big Brother

In addition to being a popular poker content creator, Martin is known for his appearances on Big Brother Canada, which is where he met his wife, Pili Nemer-Martin. “I lost the game, but I got the girl.”

Two years later, Martin was invited back to Big Brother for its fifth season and won the whole thing.

Rapper Hoodie Allen Abandons Chips in Poker World Championship for Friend’s Wedding

Rapper Hoodie Allen Abandons Chips in Poker World Championship for Friend's Wedding

With millions of dollars at stake, famous rapper Hoodie Allen left Day 2abc of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event early because his friend’s wedding across the country was more important to him.

Allen, whose real name is Steven Markowitz, the way it appears in the WSOP chip counts and on the PokerNews live reporting updates, is an avid poker player. He has appeared on Hustler Casino Live in Los Angeles multiple times and is seeking his first WSOP cash.

Hoodie Allen Shows Friend He’s More Important Than Poker

On Friday, the rapper with over 16 million Twitter followers showed up at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas with a stack he’d carried over from Day 1 in poker’s $10,000 buy-in world championship event. At the time of publishing, registration was still open in the tournament, which already had a record 9,538 entrants, so payouts aren’t yet available. But there’s a strong possibility that when all is said and done, the winner will receive $12 million or more.

With that in mind, Hoodie had a little something else more pressing despite sitting on a healthy stack of over 140,000 chips. Former Barstool Sports personality Ben Mintz, who was at his table, shared some brief details about what transpired on Friday afternoon.

The rapper explained on Twitter that he left the WSOP to fly across the country to New York to attend his friend’s wedding on Saturday. His plan is to return Sunday morning so that he can be in attendance for Day 3 of the Main Event. And that’s going to be a crucial day for players as it might end in the tournament reaching the money.

Markowitz didn’t, however, forfeit his chips. He’s still in the tournament, but his stack would get blinded down from 148,000 when he left to an end-of-the-day tally of 124,500 chips. That will put him at just over 80 big blinds when he takes his seat on Day 3. The second Day 2 session for the Main Event, of which Hoodie Allen won’t be playing, begins at noon PT on Saturday.

Online Poker Pioneer Isai Scheinberg Plays WSOP Main Event for the First Time

Online Poker Pioneer Isai Scheinberg Plays WSOP Main Event for the First Time

While participants of the 2023 World Series of Poker Main Event were treated to the surprising entry of ex-Manchester City Sergio Aguero, there was another shock Main Event debut that flew under the radar.

Online poker pioneer and co-founder of PokerStars Isai Scheinberg quietly entered poker’s crown jewel tournament on Day 2abc and navigated his way through the field, ending the session with a stack of 62,000. He returns to the felt at 12 p.m. for Day 3.

Scheinberg’s participation in the Main Event is quite a shock due to the fact that he is very rarely spotted at the poker table. Despite being an industry leader, Scheinberg never wanted to hog the spotlight and has been described as a private person. Amazingly, he has only ever given one interview to the poker media, and that was back in 2021 with Lance Bradley.

However, over the last few months, Scheinberg has been getting the recognition he deserves from some of poker’s biggest brands.

In December 2022, Scheinberg was told that he would honored by the World Poker Tour and receive the 2022 WPT Honors Award alongside long-time broadcaster Vince Van Patten. Their induction for the WPT Honors Awards also takes place tonight.

He is also a nominee to become the 2023 Poker Hall of Fame inductee, with six-time bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu, a former PokerStars ambassador during the company’s Scheinberg-led days, in his corner as one of his most vocal supporters.

Isai Scheinberg’s Recorded Live Cashes

Date Event Place Prize (USD)
October 2014 £2,200 UKIPT High Roller 1st $22,253
April 2008 €1,700 NLH EPT Monte Carlo 8th $18,039
December 1998 $1,000 Limit Hold’em 8th $2,010
May 1996 WSOP $2,500 NLH 25th $3,337

Scheinberg’s Legacy in Online Poker

Isai Scheinberg
Isai Scheinberg

Scheinberg’s introduction to the world of poker came in the late 1990s when he started developing software for online poker games. Recognizing the potential of online poker, he co-founded PokerStars in 2001, along with his son Mark Scheinberg. Under Scheinberg’s leadership as the CEO, PokerStars quickly rose to prominence and became a dominant force in the online poker industry.

PokerStars differentiated itself by offering a user-friendly platform, a wide range of game options, and innovative features that appealed to poker enthusiasts around the globe. Scheinberg’s focus on providing a secure and fair gaming experience, combined with aggressive marketing strategies as well as industry-leading customer support, helped PokerStars attract a large player base and achieve unprecedented success.

However, Scheinberg’s tenure at PokerStars was not without its challenges. In 2011, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) indicted Scheinberg and other PokerStars executives on charges related to illegal online gambling, money laundering, and bank fraud. This is commonly referred to as Black Friday in the poker community.

The charges stemmed from PokerStars’ continued operation in the US market following the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006.

Scheinberg faced extradition to the United States and spent several years navigating the legal process. In 2012, he surrendered to US authorities in New York and later reached a settlement with the DOJ. In 2014, the Scheinberg family sold PokerStars to Amaya Gaming for $4.9 billion. Scheinberg resolved his legal issues in 2020.

Argument About How Store Workers Would Split $3m Stolen Lottery Ticket Winnings Leads to Their Downfall

Woman holding lottery ticket and cash

A Massachusetts man has gotten his hands on a $3m lottery win more than six months after buying the ticket. Paul Little purchased multiple tickets at a liquor store in Lakeville on January 17, but when he forgot to take them with him, two of the store workers decided to keep them.

After learning that one of the tickets was a seven-figure winner, co-workers Joseph Reddem and Carly Nunes went to the headquarters of the Massachusetts Lottery. Officials were getting ready to pay out the winnings when they overheard an argument between the pair. Nunes allegedly said that she would only give Reddem a $200,000 cut. This conversation led to doubts over the win and an investigation began.

Nunes tried to evade the authorities for a couple of weeks

State lottery officials and the police looked at CCTV from the store and they saw that it was actually Little who bought the ticket in question. Nunes tried to evade the authorities for a couple of weeks before they caught her.

Paul Little thanked the Massachusetts Lottery for “making sure the rightful people get the award” and he now plans to donate some money to charity and pay off his mortgage.

Matakis Still Leads WSOP POY; Hellmuth Cracks Top Ten After 17th Bracelet Win

Matakis Still Leads WSOP POY; Hellmuth Cracks Top Ten After 17th Bracelet Win

It’s been a quiet week for the World Series of Poker Player of the Year race due to the WSOP Main Event taking centre stage over the last few days. With that, long-time leader Ian Matakis tops of the leaderboard ahead of Chris Brewer and Shaun Deeb.

The landscape of the top ten frontrunners has changed since PokerNews‘ last POY instalment, with Matakis retaking the lead from Deeb. Brewer has shot up to second place after bagging his second bracelet of the summer, and Phil Hellmuth has entered the top ten for the first time this series after capturing his record-extending 17th bracelet.

Brewer in the Running

Brewer became the second player to be a double bracelet winner at the 2023 WSOP. His first bracelet came in the biggest event of the series, the $250,000 Super High Roller, which he won for $5,293,556. He bagged bracelet number two after being the last player standing in the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw Lowball Championship for an additional $367,599.

Chris Brewer
Chris Brewer

PokerNews spoke to Brewer after his most recent victory, where he touched on his feelings about the POY race.

“I’m going to try,” said Brewer when asked about if he was gunning for the top spot. “I’m not going to go completely all out for it if it is going to cost me EV in some way.”

However, Brewer added, “I would like to win. I think it would be really cool.”

Can Hellmuth Become Player of the Year?

Phil Hellmuth

It’s taken until week six of the WSOP for Hellmuth to crack the top ten in the Player of the Year Standings and could be in the running for getting his first POY banner following a strong end to the series.

He recently extended his bracelet record after taking down Event #72: $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty for $803,818, which saw him crack the upper echelons of the leaderboard as well as breaching the top twenty on the all-time money list.

It would take an incredibly deep run from Hellmuth in the Main Event to boost his chances for POY, something that he hasn’t done for quite some time. His last in-the-money finish in poker’s most famous event was in 2015, where he finished in 417th for $21,786.

Opinion: Villa, Fulham, Burnley Gambling Deals Reveal High Stakes of EPL Survival

English Premier League

Taking fire

English Premier League teams Aston Villa, Burnley, and Fulham have stirred up a hornet’s nest by inking fresh on-shirt sponsorship deals with gambling firms — despite agreeing with the rest of the EPL to ditch the shirt deals from 2026/27.

EPL clubs should ‘think seriously’ about their responsibilities

The prodigal three came under heavy fire Sunday with the Chief Executive Officer of the NHS, Amanda Pritchard, saying EPL clubs should ‘think seriously’ about their responsibilities, an opinion NHS England shared via Twitter:

The fact the three teams are exposing themselves to such high-level criticism reveals, at the very least, just how high the stakes are in the EPL for the upcoming 2023/24 season. Clearly, the teams’ executives see the fallout risks as worth the considerable fortune that these deals will amass.

Serious money

Demonstrating the profitability of these gambling deals, insiders say Villa’s BK8 deal is worth considerably more than the Birmingham club’s previous £6m ($7.6m) partnership with Cazoo. Aston Villa’s electrifying 2022/23 season under Unai Emery ended with qualification for Europe, so Villa owner the NSWE group needs all the financial help it can get to compete in the transfer market while paying top money to key players.

Khan must feel obliged to give ambitious coach Marco Silva extra financial support

The same applies to Fulham’s SBOTOP shirt deal. After a solid season ending in a tenth-place finish, owner Shahid Rafiq Khan must feel obliged to give ambitious coach Marco Silva extra financial support, especially since the Portuguese on Tuesday turned down a staggering £17m ($21.5m) deal to manage Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal for one year.

Meanwhile, Vincent Kompany’s Burley won promotion to the EPL this past season and will be looking to avoid a drop straight back down, so its W88 shirt deal — which Inside World Football estimates to be in the region of £10m ($12.6m) — also makes sense for Burnley owner, US sports investment firm ALK Capital.

Exaggerated danger

Executives of the three soccer teams voted to go ahead with the sponsorship deal despite the approaching ban, revealing perhaps not everyone buys into the dangers of on-shirt advertising.

Pritchard’s argument that Villa and company “are telling child fans that gambling is okay” simply via a BK8 logo on a shirt must also apply to other brands marketed in soccer, such as McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, and Sony PlayStation.

Overdoing any of these products can lead to obesity, tooth decay, and mental health issues. However, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s were two of the main sponsors of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Sony PlayStation sponsors the UEFA Champions League.

are more gambling addicts simply coming forward for help?

Additionally, while the NHS CEO stated there’s been a “really significant” increase in public demand for NHS addiction services, could it not simply be there were fewer gambling addicts in 1948 because the UK population was smaller? Or are more gambling addicts simply coming forward for help?

Of course, gambling addiction is indeed what Pritchard calls “a really cruel disease and […] a life destroyer.” But, perhaps, rallying against soccer teams with gambling brands on their shirts allows the UK government to draw attention away from its bigger troubles, such as ongoing NHS strike action.

Pressure mounts

As for Aston Villa, Fulham, and Burnley, it will be interesting to see how much the shirt sponsorship cash is really worth to them.

exemplifies the greed that dominates football”

Villa already has its own supporters’ trust and campaign group Gambling with Lives (GWL) on its case, calling for the club to reconsider having BK8 on its shirts. Last week, GWL spokesman Will Prochaska said the partnership “exemplifies the greed that dominates football and shows why we need the government to step in to regulate gambling advertisements out of the game.”

The three clubs will, no doubt, be hoping the government reconsiders its current stance on front-of-shirt sponsorship deals. But given how long it took for the white paper on gambling reform to emerge, they could be waiting a while.

2023 WSOP Day 39: No Repeat Main Event Champion as Espen Jorstad Gets Eliminated

2023 WSOP Day 39: No Repeat Main Event Champion as Espen Jorstad Gets Eliminated

The biggest 2023 World Series of Poker Main Event is still increasing in size as late registration is still open until the start of Day 2d. After registration closed on Day 2abc another 196 players joined the field bringing the total number up to over 9,500 entries and the prize pool surpassed the $90,000,000 mark.

Halfway through the second level of the day, Guy Fieri walked into the main tournament room with a lot of noise to present the Main Event bracelet and everyone knows what they’re playing for now when they get back for Day 3 at 12:00 p.m. local time on July 9.

2023 WSOP Featured Females: Meet the Women in the Record-Breaking Main Event

Brammer Continues to Lead After Day 2abc in the WSOP Main Event World Championship

Day 39 of the 2023 WSOP saw Event #76: $10,000 WSOP Main Event World Championship continue with Day 2abc. Roughly 3,900 players returned with registration still open until the end of level 7. In total, 1,877 players found a bag at the end of the night with Day 1c chip leader Christopher Brammer leading the way with 879,000 chips.

Christopher Brammer

Other players that managed to build a big stack include Julio Belluscio (825,500), 2019 Main Event final tablist Nick Marchington (716,000), Patrik Antonius (584,500), and Gary Benson (572,000). Ronnie Bardah (519,000) and Shota Nakanishi (500,500) are also bracelet winners who finished with over half a million chips while Stephen Chidwick (472,500) and Cole Ferraro (454,000) were just shy of that mark.

Many players were forced to the rail and saw their Main Event hopes slashed as the field was trimmed to just 1,900 players. The most notable elimination came at the expense of the 2022 WSOP Main Event champion Espen Jorstad in the second level of the day. Jorstad flopped a set of sixes but it was no match for the flopped straight of Julian Aguirre. With the defending champion out of contention, the opportunity has opened up for a new player to grab the reigns and make their mark on poker history.

Espen Jorstad

For the majority of the previous Main Event winners, it was a rather successful day with eight of them finding a bag at the end of the night. Damian Salas (147,500), Joe McKeehen (220,000), Martin Jacobson (128,000), Ryan Riess (151,000), Joe Cada (241,500), Jamie Gold (248,000), Johnny Chan (372,000), and Tom McEvoy (20,000) will all be returning on Day 3 and looking to make their way into the money.
