Southwest Companion Fare 2023 – Gambling With An Edge

Facebook

I wasn’t really planning on trying for companion fare for 2023/2024. In September I had acquired the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, mostly for the 15-month zero interest intro offer (plus $200). We had some home improvements planned and the 0% on purchases would be a great benefit. But then Chase offered a 75,000 Rapid Rewards (RR) points personal card, a 60,000 RR points business card and started crediting 20,000 RR points for referral.

I obtained the personal card in mid-November 2022 and got the business card shortly thereafter. Getting approved for the personal card actually got me to the 5/24 Chase limit but I was still approved for the business card a couple days later. I should have applied for the business card first. Fortunately it worked out.

On both the SWA cards, I did most of the spending in 2022. I made sure the final spending to get me to the $3000 spend required on each card happened in early January. It isn’t clearly stated in the T+C, but even though my closing date was January 7th on one card and January 14th on the other card, I believe if I would have completed the spending in late December ( even though part of the current billing cycle), those points toward companion fare would have occurred in 2022, not 2023).

So, as of January 18th, I have companion fare for 1 year, 11 months and 13 days. I earned 135,000 RR points from sign up bonuses. Add that to my accumulated balance and I have about 275,000 points and almost 2 years to use them. Plus, referrals now earn 20,000 RR points. And if you have a Chase SWA card on account on January 1st, you get 10,000 points towards Companion fare ( but not points to use for air travel.

Let’s say you want to start now to get companion fare. A personal and a business card will get you there. Or get a personal card (75,000 RR points), the new card companion point boost (10,000 companion points), complete the $3,000 spend (3000 RR points). Get 3 referrals (20,000 RR point each) and you are there. Also, the SWA Shopping portal sometimes has some great points offers. I have seen as high as 30 points per dollar spent.
It’s a great time to get companion fare on Southwest. And if you need a referral, you can email me at [email protected] I will give you half of the referral bonus gift card value once the referral bonus hits my account. The current bonus is 20,000 RR points, which could be used for $200 in gift cards on the SWA shopping portal. I would send you $100.

It’s Not Like That – Gambling With An Edge

Putting Bills Into a Machine

In addition to being posted on www.bobdancer.com, these weekly blogs are also posted on www.gamblingwithanedge.com, where there is a forum for reader discussion. Recently, a man who posts as “Boris from Switzerland” wrote (slightly edited): Change of subject: Why has Boyd stopped offering multipliers to everybody, and why did they clean out their casino floors by removing their 99.50% and higher games? This is something I don’t like at all.

While I’m not a big fan of Boyd and the gambling decisions they have made, Boris has misstated what they are actually doing.

First, at Boyd you must “qualify” to earn any slot club points — multiplied or not. And the basis for qualification is based somewhat in mystery. When you first get your card, you are “Ruby” level. To receive slot club points, you need to move up to their second tier, which is called “Sapphire.”

The definition of Sapphire, 750 tier credits – 14,999 tier credits per qualification period, seems straightforward enough. The “mystery” part of it is how much you must play in order to earn a TC. Loose video poker, of which there is precious little, earns TCs very slowly relative to coin-in. Tighter video poker and slots earn TCs much faster for the same coin-in.

Your TCs are not displayed on the reader while you are playing. Only your “session points” are, and only then if you are at least Sapphire. If you haven’t obtained the Sapphire level, the display shows that you are earning zero points for your play. Which you are, if you’re talking about slot club points (which are different than TCs). If you go to the kiosk, however, it will tell you how many TCs you’ve earned so far and how many you need to obtain the next tier level.

Once you’ve obtained Sapphire level, your session points are displayed on the card reader, and if you pull and re-insert your card, it will tell you how many TCs you have earned today. It’s cumbersome, but the information is available.

At Boyd properties, they have a Young at Heart (YAH) program which is for players 50 years and older who are Sapphire level or higher. At Las Vegas Boyd properties, Tuesdays are YAH days, and YAH members receive 10x slot club points and some Bingo free packs.

Some Boyd casinos offer additional 10x point days. Occasionally these multipliers are offered to everybody, of whatever age, whether they have reached Sapphire level or not. Each casino has a monthly calendar of events near the slot club booth which tells when such multiplier days are being played and who is eligible. Or you can ask at the booth and they’ll tell you.

Now for Boris, who lives in Switzerland and visits Vegas a few times a year for a week-or-so at a time, this is a distinction without a difference. He’s probably not going to be earning enough to be Sapphire level each year (especially without receiving multipliers and mailers along the way), so for him there are no multipliers ever. The fact that this upsets him is not surprising.

Insofar as loose video poker goes at Boyd properties, in addition to progressives which are positive some of the time, most of these casinos have a bank or two of machines marked “up to 99.8% return.” These can include such games as 9/5 Triple Bonus Plus, NSU Deuces Wild, and 9/6 Jacks or Better, along with several others. These are all single line games for 25¢, 50¢, $1, and maybe at a few of the casinos, $2.

Since Boris limits his gambling to loose video poker, these are the machines that will be most attractive to him. They will earn TCs at a very low rate, but they will earn them. Whether it’s possible to earn Sapphire by playing two solid days of $1 NSU on these machines, simply because I don’t know the conversion rate between slot club points on these machines and TCs.

Should Boris ever earn Sapphire, he’ll now receive 10x multipliers one day a week should he be at least 50 years old. For video poker, a 10x multiplier converts to a half-percent. He’ll retain his status until the next calendar year, but he’ll have to keep playing at that level to retain that status.

So, back to Boris’ original question which was, “Why does Boyd do this?” Not being a mind reader and having no inside information at all, I conclude that Boyd has made a conscious decision to market to locals and not out-of-towners. And locals who are at least 50-years-old get the best benefits. Presumably Boyd has calculated that specializing in just these players is the best decision for their bottom line.

Boris, however, isn’t in the preferred demographic. He’s old enough, I believe, but is only an occasional visitor to Las Vegas. So, it’s probably a smart decision on his part to avoid Boyd casinos. There are numerous other casinos in Las Vegas which will welcome his action without penalizing him for not living close by.

When Is It Quittin’ Time?

When Is It Quittin' Time?

This post is syndicated by the Las Vegas Advisor for the 888 casino group. Anthony Curtis comments on the 888 article introduced and linked to on this page.

A.C. says: When should you quit playing during a gambling session? Most advice revolves around the monetary consideration, focusing on protecting a big win or limiting losses. The advice in this article is related to that, but really boils down to using common sense. It advocates paying attention to what you know is the logical thing to do, whether based on your current results or simply maximizing the experience. It sounds a little bit like a cop-out, but because of several points made in this article, there aren’t any hard-and-fast rules for stopping. That’s okay; relying on common sense is good advice for all levels of player. However, there’s a fairly solid rule of thumb for expert players who know how to play with an advantage, e.g., by counting cards in blackjack or playing a video poker progressive that’s above breakeven. Assuming you’re adequately bankrolled, you should stop when the game conditions deteriorate or when you’re too tired to play accurately. For pros, the paramount consideration for deciding when to stop is almost always whether or not the game continues to be beatable, not how much has been won or lost, especially after a small amount of play.

This article was written by Frank Scoblete in association with 888casino.

When Is It Quittin’ Time?

At any point in your contest with the casino you could be in any one of the following situations:

  • You are way ahead and feeling like the true champion of the world.
  • You are way behind, in short, you’re taking an absolute beating
  • You are a little or somewhat ahead, not bad.
  • You are a little or somewhat behind, not good.
  • You are even or about even, you have plenty for another session sometime later or tomorrow.
  • You’re tired.

Let us say you have played enough time at the table or the machine to feel you have had a full experience. You don’t feel short changed.

Should you be calling it quittin’ time?

It’s Not Good News – Gambling With An Edge

Putting Bills Into a Machine

Not so long ago, I received an email from Anthony Curtis directing my attention to https://acresmanufacturing.com/optimal-poker-analyzer/ . It’s an advertisement for a product that casinos can use to evaluate the accuracy of the video poker players at their casino.

Generally speaking, casinos want to reward players based on their true worth to the casino — that is, pay losing players a lot to keep losing, pay good players a little but not too much, and find and eliminate winning players. Also generally speaking, strong players want to disguise what they’re doing so they can keep their welcome and continue to gather their profits.

Not-so-strong video poker players (who realize they are not winning players and likely never will be) should be perfectly fine with being evaluated. They will reap more benefits!

I’ve assumed that this kind of product has been available to casinos for years. Players have been using WinPoker, Video Poker for Winners, Wolf Video Poker, and others for decades which provide this type of information presented in far more user-friendly ways that what is shown in this ad.

Still, the threat is real. If casinos accurately crack down on strong video poker players more than they are already doing, it’s more bad news for a lot of us — who’ve seen video poker playing conditions continually worsen over the past few decades.

I got to thinking how software “outing” blackjack counters is similar and different to software used to out video poker players.

Consider this hand in 9/6 Jacks or Better:  A♥ K♥ T♥ T♣ 4♥. The correct play, of course, is AKT4, but I imagine more than 95% of players play AKT. The size of the error is very small, the hand is very rare, so it adds up to being worth “almost nothing” overall.

Now consider this blackjack hand, where you’re betting $100 a hand. You’re dealt 8♠ 4♦ and the dealer shows 2♣. The correct basic strategy play (i.e., ignoring the count) is to hit the hard twelve. Some clever players double down for less — that is, put a red chip (i.e., $5) next to their black one and ask for one card only.

Why do they do this? Casino software evaluating blackjack players only check whether they are doubling or not — not the size of the double. A full-sized double would be a huge error. But since the player is only going to be taking one card, whatever it is, and they’re only a very small underdog hitting a twelve versus a dealer two, at a small fraction of their original bet, if a player can trick the casino’s software into thinking they’re a bad player, it’s worth far more than their expected loss on that small bet.

Arnold Snyder discussed this situation in his Radical Blackjack book. It’s also been discussed more than once by guests on Gambling with an Edge prior to Snyder publishing it.

The two examples cost the players approximately the same percentage-wise. But for purposes of camouflage to preserve a player’s welcome, they are very different.

Consider: In video poker, most players make the wrong play on this hand anyway. This play alone won’t identify a player as a bad one. Plus, video poker software can evaluate the size of the error. It will correctly evaluate this one as very small.

Finally, a basic strategy 9/6 Jacks or Better player plays at perhaps 99.535% while a perfect player plays at 99.544%. For a casino’s bottom line, these are essentially identical. With the mixture of slot club, comps, mailers, etc., it’s not going to be the case that a casino welcomes the first player and bans the second.

But it’s different in this blackjack example. First of all, a significant number of players (I’m guessing 30%?) know the correct play is to hit the twelve and the other 70% stand on the hand. Nobody with a clue doubles for full value on the twelve versus a two. The computer flags this as a major error. Which is good for the player if he’s actually doubling for much less. This player wants to look like a doofus in order to be allowed to continue playing.

Second, in blackjack, this is not such a rare hand. I’ll let somebody else look up or figure out its exact frequency, but it will happen several times a session.

The final difference between the games concerns the conditions surrounding the game that are so important. Video poker players look at the slot club, promotions, and mailers to determine whether or not they have the edge. Blackjack players look primarily to penetration (i.e., how many cards are dealt before the re-shuffle), the dealer errors, and the willingness of casinos to let players play. Computer software doesn’t address any of these things.

So, whether or not casinos use computer software to help them identify and eliminate strong players, my prediction is the best players will continue to find ways to extract money from casinos. Sadly, the more casinos have and use accurate information concerning how well a player plays, the harder it will be to find those ways to win.

How to Set Resolutions That Last For 2023| FCCG

Preventing the Link Between Crime & Problem Gambling

Once the fireworks are over and the ball has dropped, it feels like anything is possible. While ringing in the new year doesn’t mean an instant clean slate, it’s a great opportunity to take a step back and reflect on the past year while looking forward to what you want to achieve in the next one. For those struggling with the impacts of problem gambling, setting intentional resolutions is the key to changing behavior and improving quality of life. Keep reading to learn how celebrate New Year’s Resolution Week (January 1st-7th) by selecting resolutions that matter and elevate one or more aspects of daily life.

Setting & Achieving Resolutions that Matter

The word “resolution” has a bit of a bad reputation, with many people leaving their well-intentioned gym plans and financial goals in the dust around the second week of January. However, this year we’re breaking that cycle and turning resolutions into realities with positive impacts that last well beyond 365 days.

A pro tip for those who are visual learners is to create a mood board with the resolutions and related images so you can have a physical reminder of what you want to accomplish. We also recommend telling a close family member or friend about your goals so they can help you achieve them or simply check in on your progress throughout the year. We firmly believe preparation is the key to success, and with the right game plan, 2023 can be the best year yet.

2023 Resolutions Guide

The first step to creating a list of resolutions is to choose a meaningful goal and then break it down into smaller components. For example, if someone is experiencing difficulties with gambling and wants to heal through recovery, that would be their overall goal. Once the overarching resolution is established, they should list out the steps they’ll take to achieve it, which in this case begins with calling the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling’s (FCCG) 24/7, confidential, and multilingual 888-ADMIT-IT Problem Gambling HelpLine. Other steps to recovery may include:

  • Spending more time with loved ones
  • Attending a self-help meeting
  • Taking advantage of the 888-ADMIT-IT Problem Gambling HelpLine’s free services
  • Investing time in other activities, such as golfing, traveling or art.

These steps can be adjusted to fit personal preferences and needs, but should still follow a few rules of thumb. They should:

  • Positively impact multiple areas of life
  • Be as specific as possible in the breakdown steps
  • Be able to be worked on every day
  • Be achievable based on schedule demands and starting point
  • Be Beneficial to overall wellness
  • Have set milestones so you can track progress

The Resources You Need to Succeed

Recovery is a team effort, not a solo sport, so as you tackle their resolutions this year, FCCG is here to provide the right resources for compulsive gamblers and their loved ones. Start the journey today by contacting the Problem Gambling HelpLine at 888-ADMIT-IT (888-236-4848), texting (321-978-0555), emailing ([email protected]), chatting (gamblinghelp.org), or visiting us on social media.

Cómo Establecer Propósitos Duradedors Para el 2023

Preventing the Link Between Crime & Problem Gambling

How To Play Multi-Hand Blackjack

How To Play Multi-Hand Blackjack

This post is syndicated by the Las Vegas Advisor for the 888 casino group. Anthony Curtis comments on the 888 article introduced and linked to on this page.

A.C. says: This article is about playing multiple hands in online blackjack, but the information about expected losses and risk also apply to playing live blackjack in casinos. Author Henry Tamburin hits all the important points, including the fact that you can’t beat the online games that shuffle after every hand. However, it’s also clear that those playing for entertainment will find it much easier to play multiple hands online and often for significantly lower stakes, which counteracts the negative effect of faster play.

This article was written by Henry Tamburin in association with 888casino.

How To Play Multi-Hand Blackjack

Multi-Hand Blackjack is the same as the traditional blackjack game, with this caveat: You can play more than one hand per round (up to five hands, although the latter varies by the online site).

You’re playing against a dealer with the objective of beating her by:

  • Having your hand total higher than the dealer’s hand, or
  • Having 21 or less when the dealer busts.

You have the option to play one or more hands per round. Some online casinos allow you to play up to three hands while others permit five hands (check the blackjack rules). You can also bet the same or different amounts on each hand up to the table limits.
