One of the best features of No-Limit Hold’em is that you are free to play any style that takes your fancy. You can play as tight or loose, passive or aggressive as you wish; it is up to you to make your playing style profitable. Elite-level players such as Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey made the loose-aggressive (LAG) style their own, entertaining spectators and bamboozling opponents in equal measure. The LAG style is difficult to implement but exciting to play in addition to being potentially very lucrative, which is why the good folks at the WPT Global Blog have penned an article giving tips for wannabe LAGs.

First of all, you need to understand what a LAG style entails. LAGs have more relaxed starting hand requirements, meaning they play a wider range of hands and they play them aggressively, coming in for a raise and three-betting more frequently.

Where players with the skills of the aforementioned Dwan and Ivey can play any two cards, the WPT Global Blog suggests not getting too crazy when you first attempt playing LAG.

“When it comes to the start ranges of a good loose-aggressive player, they’ll play somewhere between 10-20% looser than a good tight-aggressive player. If a TAG player has a VPIP/PFR of 20/16, a good loose-aggressive player will be around 35/30, which is a significant increase.”

Changing to a LAG style isn’t just adding a bunch more cards to your range but carefully selecting the correct hands. For example, according to the WPT Global Blog, “you want to use hands that are suited and/or connected, or have decent high-card value.” The WPT Global Blog suggests a hand such as five-three suited is better than queen-five offsuit. As a general rule, pretend you are seated one position later when you are considering opening the pot. If you are in the under-the-gun (UTG) seat, open hands you would in the UTG+1 seat, and so on.

When to Play a LAG Style and When Not To

The best style of poker to play is usually the opposite of what your opponents are doing, leading to the LAG style being best when faced with a table full of TAGs or tight-passive players. Why? Because these players will fold more frequently.

“You’re going to win way more than your fair share of pots as they’re going to fold far too often. You’ll find that your showdown winnings won’t be great, but you’ll be winning so many pots without a showdown that it won’t matter,” the WPT Global Blog said.

You should only employ a LAG style against players that fold too much, those players that seem to always see monsters under the bed. Opening with such a wide range of hands means that you are unlikely to have the best hand most of the time, so you’ll make most of your money or accumulate more chips when your opponent gives up the ghost and folds.

The WPT Global Blog suggests switching from a LAG to a more TAG approach if you find yourself on a table of loose-passive players, which are common in low-stakes live cash games. This is because these players never fold if they have a piece of the board; they’re not called calling stations for nothing!

“Low-stakes live games are great examples of this. They’re filled with players who don’t like to fold and will happily go to showdown with top pair no matter how the board runs out. There are plenty of players who have gone broke trying to bluff the recreational players at $1/$2. For those at the back – THEY’RE NOT GOING TO FOLD! Save your money and play a tight-aggressive strategy instead; it will be a lot more profitable in the long run.

Coming up against a talented LAG opponent is not the most ideal scenario, not least because they will put you in some difficult spots where you are continually second-guessing whether they have a solid hand or they simply have their hands in the cookie jar yet again. “If you come across a player who is playing a loose-aggressive strategy, the best counter you can have for them is to call down more often when you have showdown value. Phil Hellmuth took his largest live-stream defeat in a decade on Monday’s Hustler Casino Live high-stakes game, and he was apparently so excited to tell the Twitter world about his loss that he spilled the beans two hours before the stream ended.

As is customary when it comes to live-streamed shows, which all operate on a slight delay for integrity reasons (and gaming regulations), most players will wait until the stream concludes before posting results on social media. But not the “Poker Brat,” who prematurely informed his followers that he dumped $144,500.

The 16-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner, however, held true to his word that he would buy in for $300,000, a proclamation he made last year after facing criticism for entering a Live at the Bike high-stakes game with just $20,000.

Hellmuth Takes an ‘L’

At the end of the five-hour stream, he was down $158,600, according to the YouTube graphic, slightly more than showed in his tweet. A large chunk of those losses came in a hand against his pal Stanley Tang, the DoorDash founder.

With three straddles on, Hellmuth made a huge raise from the button to $15,000 with and Tang just called with in the first straddle before Alan Keating, holding in the second straddle, and Chamath Palihapitiya, with in the other straddle, called.

The flop came out , not exactly music to the ears of Hellmuth, but that didn’t stop him from continuing his aggression with a $25,000 bet. Tang then moved all in for $45,700 total, forcing Keating and Palihapitiya off the pot.

With action back on the “Poker Brat,” he was in an uncomfortable position, knowing he could likely only beat a draw, but perhaps priced in given it was only $20,700 more for him to call (6.5-1 on his money). He eventually did call and both players agreed to run it twice, neither of which improved Hellmuth’s hand. Tang took down the $155,000 pot, while the Poker Hall of Famer chewed himself out for betting the flop.

Hellmuth also lost a $72,000 pot to Stanley Choi when his pocket kings were cracked on the turn by pocket queens. Earlier in the session, he made a surprising fold with ace-king preflop when facing a $9,000 three-bet from HCL regular “J.R.,” who had pocket 10’s.

But the weirdest, and one of the most costly, hands of the day for the former world champion came against “J.R.,” who bet $20,000 on the river with on a board of and somehow received a call from Hellmuth, who had for nothing but king-high. Commentator Bart Hanson questioned if it was a misread and not some wild hero call.

Keating Doesn’t Like to Fold

For the entire session, Hellmuth raised a measly 8% of the hands he was dealt, far and away the lowest at the table. His VPIP (voluntarily putting chips in play) was just 31%. On the opposite end of the spectrum was Keating, whose VPIP was at 86%, a Hustler Casino Live record.

Keating has long been one of the most popular players on the show due to his apparent hatred for folding hands. He plays any two cards and is tough to bluff. But although he’s about as loose as they come, he also has the stones to pull off some six-figure bluffs.

Before the stream began, he said in a pregame interview that his goal was to stack Hellmuth. Not only did that not happen, but he finished the live-streamed portion of the game down $252,000, making him the biggest loser in the game by a wide margin.

Palihapitiya, who was playing for charity (as was Tang), was far and away the biggest winner. The billionaire venture capitalist and regular in Hellmuth’s home games bought in for $50,000 and finished the game with $406,500 in his stack, spinning up a $365,500 profit. No one else won more than $30,000 while on stream.

Hellmuth is scheduled to appear on Live at the Bike on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Robbi Jade Lew will compete in those games, making her live-stream return for the first time since the Sept. 29 alleged cheating incident on HCL.

The champions of PartyPoker‘s new trio of major tournaments were the online poker site’s biggest winners this weekend, with all three events proving popular. The Big Saturday, Sunday Party, and Sunday Carnival all saw solid turnouts this weekend. $150,000 Sunday Party Final Table Results

Some 1,450 players bought into the $150,000 Sunday Party for $109, and it was “Chunkayyy” that was the last player standing. According to the PartyPoker Blog, chunkayyy was the chip leader at the end of Day 1 with only 16 players remaining. They built on their impressive start to the tournament and clinched the title and a total prize weighing in at $17,016.

With bounties included, all nine finalists won at least $1,660 for their efforts. “Gregskaw” ($1,660), “SmudgeTh3Cat” ($1,843), and “loadrunner” ($3,234) were the first players to bow out, leaving only six players in the hunt to become only the second-ever Sunday Party champion.

The final six became five with the untimely demise of “riicko-Corleone” ($2,233), then four when “The Zone” crashed out ($3,747). Heads-up was set once “IIIIIIII” ($4,740) and “zadymiator” ($6,398) found themselves void of chips.

Chunkayyy and “AreYaWideSham2” fought one-on-one for the title and the final, chunky bounty. Both secured more than $8,800 from the main prize pool, but the last bounties were worth just as much. AreYaWideSham1 fell at the final hurdle and collected $11,740, leaving Chunkayyy to collect a total prize worth $17,016.

2023 iGB Affiliate Awards

Every year, the iGB Affiliate Award for ‘Best Poker Affiliate’ looks to reward those that have grown their brand, traffic and conversions. The awards are specifically looking for sites that demonstrate the following:

• Clear growth in traffic, NDCs and revenue
• Improvements in UX and conversion rates
• Innovation in the tactics, products and services used to acquire and drive poker traffic
• Material sign-ups with new partners
• Strengthened relationships with existing partners
• Adaptation to disruptions and challenges in the wider market (i.e. regulation, economy)
• Successful entry into new markets and niches

Jason Mercier hadn’t ever played inside the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas when he registered this week’s $25,500 10-Game Championship as part of the inaugural PokerGO Tour (PGT) Mixed Games festival. The Florida poker legend made it a debut to remember as he took down the event for $367,500 after a heads-up deal with Daniel Zack.

The victory brings Mercier up to $20.5 million in Hendon Mob earnings and gives him his first tournament victory since August 2019, when he took down the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open $50,000 Super High Roller for $715,860.

Many of the best mixed game players in the world have spent the beginning of February inside the PokerGO Studio competing in the inaugural PGT Mixed Games festival, which got underway on Feb. 4 and consisted of eight mixed game events involving poker variants like H.O.R.S.E., 8 Game and Dealer’s Choice.

Several established mixed game specialists proved their chops and scored titles, including Shaun Deeb, who started off the series by taking down Event #1: $10,300 H.O.R.S.E. for $208,800, as well as John Monnette, who won Event #2: $10,300 8-Game for $211,200.

Other players who earned mixed game titles this month include Poker Hall of Famer Eli Elezra (Event #3: $10,300 Triple Stud Mix – $155,000), Nick Guagenti (Event #5: $10,300 Triple Draw Mix – $171,075) and Scott Abrams (Event #6: $10,300 Dealer’s Choice – $179,200).

Mercier took down the $25,500 10-Game Championship the series after getting through a field of 57 runners that included David “ODB” Baker, Jeremy Ausmus, Daniel Negreanu and recent PokerStars Players Championship fourth-place finisher Nacho Barbero, all of whom made deep runs in the event.

“This tournament was so much fun to play,” Mercier told PokerGO after the victory. “It was my first time in the PokerGO Studio. I felt good playing. I played cash for two days before coming here, so I felt like my mixed games were oiled up and ready to go. I played well. I was never all in except for one time in no-limit deuce where I had the guy dead. That was the only time I was all in and at risk during the whole tournament, so I feel like I played really well, ran well, and am super happy to get the W and nice payday.”

Mixed Game Royalty

There were surely no easy table draws as dozens of the world’s best mixed game players battled it out on the PokerGO felt, including Adam Friedman, Steve Zolotow and Phil Hellmuth, according to PokerGO live updates.

Deeb is no stranger to mixed game success as four of his five World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets were earned in mixed events, including a victory in 2016’s Event #49: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud for $111,101 and most recently a win 2021’s Event #53: High Roller Pot-Limit Omaha (8-Handed) for $1.3 million.

The same in true of Monnette, a mixed game cash specialist who has four bracelets from mixed events including 2017’s Event #22: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship ($256,610) and 2021’s Event #16: Limit Hold’em Championship ($245,680).

Elezra won his fifth WSOP bracelet last summer bracelet in Event #63: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship and showed he could handle other formats as he took down the PokerGO Triple Stud Mix event. Elezra struck a heads-up deal with Yuval Bronshtein, who crushes Florida mixed games and holds a half dozen Seminole Hard Rock Poker mixed game titles.

Like Deeb, four of Mercier’s five WSOP bracelets were won in mixed game events, including the 2016 Event #24: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship for $422,874 and the Event #16: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship the same year for $273,335.

There were also some entertaining side bets at play as Deeb bet “Crazy” Mike Thorpe 100:1 that Thorpe wouldn’t win the Triple Draw Mix event. It ended up being a sweat as Thorpe made the final table but bowed out in third place before Guagenti and Alex Livingston struck a heads-up deal.

In Event #8: $5,300 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw, the final event of the series, PokerGO founder and recent PokerGO cup champion Cary Katz walked away with the trophy and $83,200 after defeating Johannes Becker during heads-up play.

One event still needs to play out as Ben Lamb and Maxx Coleman have their heads-up match in Event #4: $10,300 Big Bet Mix on pause and will return to play it out on Feb. 13.

Despite not picking up any victories, Zack earned 352 points to make him the PGT Mixed Games Series overall winner ahead of Monnette (316 points), Guagenti (290 points), Baker (268 points) and Mercier (257 points).
