New York Sportsbooks Set Betting Handle Record in January

German Court Ordered Operator to Reimburse Player for $14.8K

The New York State Gambling Commission, the regulator in charge of sports betting in the state, has announced the results outlining the performance of mobile sportsbooks for January. In total, the mobile betting handle in the state hit $1.79 billion, representing a new all-time-high record.

It was back in early January last year when New York launched mobile sports betting. Back then, the state set its initial record for betting handle after it hit $1.67 billion. Overall, the betting handle since the launch of mobile betting has always surpassed the billion-dollar mark with the exception of July and August when it dropped to around $800 million.

Besides a record betting handle, in January, mobile betting hit the highest GGR since the launch of the activity. In Total, mobile betting GGR last month hit $149.4 million, again setting a new record. The GGR that previously came close to this result was back in November 2022 when it hit $148.2 million.

The gambling regulator released a further breakdown of the latest figures, revealing the share of the revenue for the platform providers and the state. The $148.2 million in GGR breaks down to $73.2 million in net revenue for mobile sportsbooks, as well as $76.2 million for the state. Not unexpectedly, the two numbers represent the best results for the state and the platform providers.

Caesars, DraftKings and FanDuel Report Highest GGR, Betting Handle

A further breakdown released by the regulator reveals that FanDuel, DraftKings, and Caesars Sportsbook were the top three mobile betting providers with the highest betting handle in January. During the first month of mobile sports betting operations in New York, last year in January, Caesars was the unquestionable leader after reporting $627.4 million in betting handle.

However, in January this year, Caesars reported the third-highest betting handle, which is still an outstanding result. The sportsbook reported $223.7 million in betting handle last month, delivering $15 million in mobile sports betting GGR. This translated to $7.6 million in proceeds for the state and $7.3 in net revenue for Caesars.

The second-highest wagering handle last month was reported by DraftKings. The sportsbook’s handle last month was $593.4 million, which delivered $39.8 million in mobile sports betting GGR. Considering the 51% tax on sports betting, the state collected $20.3 million, while DraftKings’ share last month was $19.5 million.

But last month, the unquestionable leader with the highest betting handle in New York was FanDuel. The company reported $726.7 million in betting handle representing $81.9 million in GGR, two figures marking the best results for the operator since its launch in this particular market. The total GGR translates to $41.8 million in proceeds for the state and $40.1 million in net revenue for FanDuel for January.

MGCB Green-Lights 888 to Become Hannahville’s New Platform Provider

Leadstar Media Receives New Licenses in Michigan

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), which is responsible for implementing, managing, and enforcing the Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act’s provisions, has given the green light to 888’s VHL Michigan subsidiary to turn into the Hannahville tribe’s new platform provider under the Sports Illustrated brand.

Twin Spires Exited the Business in 2022

The Hannahville Indian Community’s tribe has entered the agreement with 888 Holdings as a result of its former platform provider for online gaming and sports betting, TwinSpires, announcing that it would leave the deal in 2022. Accordingly, Churchill Downs’ sports betting business is no longer involved in offering any online gaming or internet sports betting services to the people of Michigan.

MGCG’s executive director Henry Williams explained that the community in Hannahville was the first operator in the US to change its platform provider since the legalization of online gambling. He also acknowledged 888 Holding’s ability to use its experience to stimulate the growth of the tribe online.

As a result of TwinSpire’s exit from the business, 888 Holdings’ VHL Michigan LLC became the tribe’s new online sports betting provider starting September 7, 2022.

Discussing the new agreement, Williams expressed his desire for the tribe to keep up with its success now that it can once again provide its customers with gaming and sports betting options. The fresh agreement represents an extension of the previous partnership between the two parties.

In the meanwhile, the MGCB has announced that it will continue to supervise the conduct of fair and honest gaming that can protect the interests of Michigan’s citizens.

Hannahville Indian Community Preserves and Enhances the Community

The Hannahville Indian Community in Wilson, Michigan is a fast-expanding entity with a clear goal to preserve and improve their community’s existence in terms of social and economic development, and cultural growth.

The tribe continued its growth from a struggling community that survived using minimal federal funds into a prosperous community that turned into a driving force for the Central Upper Peninsula ever since gaming was officially launched in the 1980s.

As of June 3, 2013, the tribe’s Enrolled Tribal Membership reached the 891 mark, going up 3% in the last 11 years, with 37 adopted individuals adopted into the tribe. The number of Registered Descendants reached 439 as of June 3, with 106 new registrations since 2010.

The MGCB announced the official launch of online sports betting and gambling operations in the state in January 2021.

Texas Lawmaker Disagrees with Betting and Gambling Proposals

Bulgarian Football Union Rejects Gambling Ad Ban Proposal

After the start of the legislative season early in January, lawmakers in the state are trying to push the legalization of sports betting, as well as casino gambling. Different proposals seek to legalize the activities, predicting that betting and gambling will deliver economic stimulus and at the same time reduce the share of the black market. Even if lawmakers approve bills throughout the session, the proposals would need to pass a vote by Texans in November.

But while supporters claim that legalization will bring benefits, opponents of gambling legalization disagree. Carl Tepper, Republican State Representative, recently interviewed by KCBD, rejected proposals for gambling legalization in Texas. Instead of calling for the liberalization of the market, he showed support for tough regulations and laws against the gambling sector.

Tepper called for changes in the legal text when it comes to game rooms, saying that the definition of those locations needs to be changed to “illegal gambling casinos.” By introducing such changes to the text, loopholes will be shut, allowing such illegal operations to be shut down, he added.

A Fresh Gambling Tax Revenue Stream Is Not Needed

According to PlayTexas’ managing editor, Tyler Andrews, Texans are just as excited about sports betting as bettors from other states. In fact, he explained, that sports betting and gambling are already happening in the state, but for the moment, operate illegally.

On the other hand, Andrews added, some Texans are visiting nearby states to gamble. This, according to him, deprives Texas of invaluable tax revenue and leaves millions in the hands of out-of-state, illegal or offshore organizations. Last but not least, he explained that although gambling tax streams may bring small revenue, it is still “reliable and they might be good to have on a rainy day.”

If gambling were pennies from heaven, then New Mexico and New Jersey wouldn’t be bankrupt.

Carl Tepper, Republican State Representative in Texas

However, Tepper argued that states that offer gambling such as New Jersey and New Mexico reveal that gambling tax isn’t a solution that will fix everything. Additionally, he explained that currently, Texas has a surplus surpassing $30 billion and this was achieved without tax revenue from casinos or sportsbooks. Finally, Tepper added that the legalization of gambling would create unnecessary bureaucracies in the state.

Magic City Casino gets a new owner in midst of sale

Magic City Casino gets a new owner in midst of sale

Following a two-month postponement and an improved pitch, for so-called the biggest casino deal in Florida history, the Florida Gaming Control Commission on Wednesday, February 8, granted conditional approval for the sale of the gambling license from Miami-based Magic City Casino to an Alabama-based Native American tribe, Poarch Band Creek Indians.

Completion of a multimillion- dollar purchase:

This resolution by Florida regulator will permit the PCI Gaming Authority, operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, to finalize the multimillion-dollar purchase of a casino owned by the Havenick family and its West Flagler Associates to manage slot machines, poker and electronic casino games in Miami.

However, the buying price was not revealed, but attorney John Lockwood, who represents both sides of the purchase agreement, aka West Flegler Associates and PCI Gaming, told the commission that “it will be a cash deal.”

In this regard, and with data available form 2019 when PCI Gaming Authority purchased the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for $1.3 billion, analysts estimate this purchase deal to be worth nearly $600 million.

First change of casino ownership:

Since the Magic City Casino, formerly known as the Flagler Dog Track, has been owned and operated by the Havenick family for years, this will be the first replacement of ownership.

In this regard, Jay Dorris, president and CEO of Wind Creek Hospitality, the subsidiary of PCI Gaming that will supervise the development project, said: “The new owner have ambitious plans.”

Casino upgrade and renovation plans:

The dog run that is part of the casino is now closed and its 30-acres of property may be the location for an opulent resort connected to the casino, which will look similar to the company’s Caribbean properties and involve shopping centers and “experience-oriented attractions,” according to Mr. Dorris.

In the interview he also said: “We’re very pleased that the commission made their conditional approval. We’ll get the deal closed and we’re going to be very transparent and provide them with whatever info they need.

“This purchase is a fantastic opportunity to expand on a successful business and intends to improve the property and make additional investments.”

Magic City employee retention:

In the near future, Mr. Dorris said that “PCI Gaming intends to retain all Magic City employees, except for some senior executives who will stay with West Flagler Associates.”

He added: “The company will continue to control its other gambling operations, which include a permit to operate summer jai-alai and poker in a future operation near Miami’s Edgewater neighnorhood and the Bonita Springs Poker Room near Fort Myers.

“There will not be any immediate changes but I hope to get the company’s awards club for patrons going soon.”

The most important decision made by the Florida Gaming Control Commission:

This conditional approval by the Florida regulator is one of the most significant unanimous decisions by the Florida regulator, which is without one member since its former president John Mclver stepped down.

The commission was created by the Legislature and officially launched last year with the primary task of regulating iGaming operations in Florida.

In December, the regulator stopped the property purchase deal between West Florida Associations and PCI Gaming and instructed the companies to release a large portion of 103 redacted pages from the 110-page application.

Then in January, PCI Gaming changed the proposal by replacing one subsidiary, Wind Creek Miami LLC with Gretna Racing LLC, an entirely-owned subsidiary, as the lead entity to buy 100% ownership and equity interest in the Magic City Casino license. The agreement involves a parimutuel operating license, a card room license and a slot machine license for fiscal year 2022-23.

However, Gretna Racing, unlike Wind Creek Miami, already owns a parimutuel license for quarter horse racing and a card room, which makes it easier for it to acquire the slot license, which is currently owned by West Flagler Associates. As the slot license was sold in the middle of the year, Gretna Racing needs to pay $1 million of the $2 million license fee, according to Mr. Lockwood.

Request for conclusion of the contract within 30 days:

The Florida regulator has requested that the sale agreement close within the next 30 days and that all final details be provided to the regulator for final approval.

In this regard, Ross Marshman, general counsel of the commission, said: “If it happens as described, it can be approved.

“But we have to actually see evidence that what was described actually took place.”

Opponents of the deal:

So far, the only opposition to the deal is the Seminole Tribe, whose attorney Marc Dunbar gave the commission a history lesson on the legal model behind the transfer and sale of parimutuel licenses.

He said: “Sale to Gretna Racing should not be allowed, not because the company was not a good operator, but because the commission was establishing precedent that was not regulatory best practices.”

He also added: “This is the most expensive gaming transaction – if you believe industry rumors – in Florida’s history. And so, I would encourage you to proceed with diligence… The Seminole Tribe is not opposed to West Flagler selling its permit or any slot machine licensee selling its permit. It’s just making sure it complies with the statutes.”

According to official documents, the contract for the purchase was signed on September 20, 2022, between West Flagler Associates and PCI Gaming Authority.

Purchase involves all “house cash”, all listings, all contracts, vehicle and trailers licenses.

But that’s not all; as they also indicate that PCI will lease assets for future casino upgrades.

In this regard, Mr. Dunbar said: “The commission should have access to those details, which were not released with the application.”

When asked whether the commission did everything properly before making the decision, they answered that everything was according to the rules.

Massachusetts Approves Encore Boston Harbor Expansion

Massachusetts Approves Encore Boston Harbor Expansion

Wynn Resorts – Encore’s operator – received MGC’s blessing to construct a new building right across the street from its current integrated casino. The new plans include a variety of fresh offers, including sports betting, thanks to Massachusetts legalizing it recently.

Expansion Plans Get Green Light

The MGC approved the expansion on Wednesday after a favorable interpretation of the 2013 Everett casino referendum. This enabled Wynn to have authorized gaming on both sides of Route 99. The upcoming construction will include a dedicated poker room, a second sports betting salon, a theater, and a parking garage. The “Memoire” nightclub will also be relocated there.

The question of the referendum was whether it allowed Wynn to launch the casino on the Encore Boston Harbor’s site specifically or whether voters had agreed to a general casino license. The details of the referendum are the exact reason why the new casino will only be offering sports betting and poker – at least until legislative changes are introduced.

Wynn has been trying to expand for some time now, and the 4-1 vote of the MGC that gaming is allowed in the vicinity of the current casino is a big win for these plans. The only vote against belonged to Commissioner Eileen O’Brien, according to information from State House News Service. Her concerns were whether the voters’ will was being respected.

O’Brien’s notion is that by enabling this expansion based on proximity to the site that was initially the focus of the vote, this can continue happening. This raises some important questions, one of which is about the future of the gambling scene in the state. As retail sports betting was just launched not two weeks ago, some are wondering: What’s next?

Massachusetts Gaming Scene Growing

Six operators received preliminary license approval towards the end of January. FanDuel, Bally Bet, Betway, DraftKings, PointsBet, and Jake Paul’s Betr received the temporary untethered Category 3 license for online/mobile sports betting. This ensured that come launch day, sports betting would be well taken care of online.

As the question of mobile operators was settled, this gave way for other vendors to start populating the new market in the state. Sportradar received a vendor license on the eve of the launch. Genius Sports also received a temporary vendor license from the MGC, marking another state where the company can operate.

The number of states that offer sports betting has also been rapidly increasing ever since the 2018 repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). As it currently stands, over a dozen US states do not offer any form of sports betting, at least for the moment.

Chase the greenbacks in Nolimit City’s brand-new slot, Benji Killed in Vegas. Trigger the Dead Presidents Nudge to bag multipliers or hit the 3-row xNUDGE wild for added wins.

Nolimit City has released some of the most interesting online slots over the past two years. Their edgy slots like San Quentin xWays offer something you just don’t find in other provider’s portfolio right now.

New out for February 2023 is Benji Killed in Vegas. It’s a crime-themed slot that celebrates the Dead Presidents, the former American presidents who now preside only on the backs of US bank notes. Benjamin “Ben G” Franklin, Abraham “Ab” Lincoln, and George “G og” Washington have been given a gangsta makeover in this five-reel slot. There’s even a hip-hop track to listen to as you spin the reels.

As with other recent Nolimit City slots releases, Benji Killed in Vegas promises a host of exclusive modifiers. Look out for the Dead Presidents Nudge where a high-paying symbol partially visible will nudge up to become fully visible. In addition, you earn a +1 multiplier for each successful nudge.

Nolimit City’s familiar xNudge Wild also appears here. A three-row high wild symbol always nudges to become fully visible on a reel, triggering a multiplier when it does. We also like the two-dice scatter which triggers enhancers such as overlay multipliers. You can also trigger Vegas$ free spins with 2x-4x overlay multipliers and B.I.G. Vegas$ spins with a multiplier worth up to 6x.

Whether it’s the Enhancers, the 7,776 ways to win or the top jackpot worth 10,000x, there’s something to enjoy in Benji Killed in Vegas. Try it for free today and see what you think.

There’s some bad bunny blood in the action-packed E-Force slot from Yggdrasil Gaming. Follow the robo-bunny as he takes on a mean posse of rascally rabbits as you try to take down the 10,000x top prize.

Yggdrasil Gaming’s new slot is the perfect antidote to the full-on thrills of Nolimit City’s games. On the face of it, E-Force is a cute animal-themed slot filled with bunnies and nature. However, in the warren you’ll find a group of gun-toting, karate-kicking critters.

You play E-Force on a five-reel set-up filled with an array of bunnies in various action movie poses. However, the star of the show is the Robocop-alike bunny who acts as the wild symbol.

You trigger free spins by landing three or more free spins scatters or wilds at the same time. You also activate a prize multiplier. Plus, you can earn additional free spins or multipliers during the bonus game.

E-Force is crammed with great graphics and a lot of charm. We particularly like the Bruce Lee bunny and the Arnold Schwarzenegger rabbit, complete with rocket launcher. Look out too for cute animations that appear in the background as you spin.

Looking for something different for your best new online slots of the week? Give E-Force a try for free today.

Things are getting sticky in the woods in Hot Hot Honey, the delicious new slot from Armadillo Studios. Collect matching symbols with multipliers or trigger the trail bonus and fly your way to the Grand Prizepot.

Armadillo Studios hasn’t appeared in our round-ups of the best new online slots of the week. However, going by the quality of Hot Hot Honey, the company will be making a lot more appearances in 2023.

Hot Hot Honey is powered by SlotMatrix, the partner program from software giant, EveryMatrix. The slot showcases the type of slick graphics and gameplay you’ll find in other Armadillo games such as Queen of Egypt and Wild Willy’s Gold Rush. There are even four fixed jackpots that you can win during the game.

Hot Hot Honey begins as a standard five-reel slot featuring a big nature theme. Trees and flowers crowd the backdrop while honey, fairies and bees populate the reels. Each position spins as an independent reel.

When you land five or more matching symbols, they are added to a counter at the foot of the reels. The matching symbols become sticky while the remaining icons respin. This continues until no matching symbols appear. Once this happens, you earn a payout based on the number of symbols and a beehive multiplier that’s been increasing as you land more winners.

You can also trigger a trail bonus during the game. Move back and forth along the trail to win cash or hit the mystery prize symbol to earn a random payout worth between 50-500x stake. You may also trigger the Grand Prizepot which sits at the end of the board game trail.

The RTP in Hot Hot Honey of 94% might be low but the high-variance action will keep you flying back for more. Give it a spin for free now.

We’re going deep underground for our final new online slot. Big Dig Gold is a fresh release from Triple Cherry that features wilds and a free spins wheel. Grab your pickaxe and dig for gold.

Big Dig Gold is a 25-line online slot that will be familiar to anyone who’s played games like BetSoft’s Gold Canyon. The various symbols in the game include gold nuggets (the top payer), duffel bags and canaries.

Look out for the wild symbols too. Wilds replace all regular symbols in the game except the bonus scatters. They also pay up to 50x if you hit five-of-a-kind.

You trigger a roulette wheel bonus by landing three or more scatters in any position. The wheel of fortune contains a mix of dead pockets and free spins. Free spins totals range from 2 to 10.

The mining theme isn’t the only thing that’s similar to BetSoft. In Big Dig Gold, you experience some very smooth reels and beautiful graphics. And like BetSoft’s best 3D slots, Big Dig Gold is highly volatile. Why not give the game a play for free and see if this is worth some of your prospecting time?

Club Brugge with a Chance to Make History

When they booked the ticket to the Round of 16 of the 2022-23 Champions League, Club Brugge became only the second Belgian team to play in the knockout phase of soccer’s most elite competition.

Before them, Gent did the same in the 2015-16 season. Gent’s journey ended in that phase, meaning that Club Brugge have a chance to become the first Belgian team to make the UCL top 8.

For that to happen, they need to do better than Benfica in the UCL doubleheader. Beating Benfica in Portugal looks like a mission impossible, but getting a good result in Belgium doesn’t seem that crazy.

These guys tend to play well at home, the evidence being that they went 2-0-1 at home in the group stage in the Champions League.

The Eagles Playing Superb Soccer in 2023

Benfica players have been brilliant this entire season, but especially since the start of 2023. They’re superb in the offense, with Goncalo Ramos being their most dangerous striker.

Then, there’s Joao Mario, who’s been a true midfield general this season. One of his colleagues from the center of the pitch – Enzo Fernandez – has moved to Chelsea, but Benfica don’t seem to be missing him.

They’re great at keeping the ball in their possession and not letting the opposition create too many scoring chances. The result is that in most of their 2023 games, Benfica managed to keep a clean sheet.

Club Brugge vs Benfica Prediction

Benfica are the better team, but Club Brugge are going to give their 100% on Wednesday. The Belgians have had plenty of time to prepare for this game, meaning that they could put on a much stronger resistance than what UCL odds are suggesting. In fact, we think they can make an upset and hold the Portuguese visitors to a draw.

Picks: Club Brugge and Benfica to draw; under 2.5 goals
