2023 WSOP Day 31: Vitor Dzivielevski Hoping to Join His Brother in the Bracelet Club



The last day of June was the 31st day of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. Another four bracelets were meant to be adorning players’ wrists, but in the end only one was dished out, with the other trio of tournaments requiring an unscheduled additional day!

There were seven other events in play throughout the day, and here is how the land lays after the 31st day of the series.

The poker community was rooting for Erik Seidel in Event #60: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw because he had a chance of becoming only the fifth player in history to win at least ten gold WSOP bracelets. However, Seidel dropped out in fifth, and it was Jason Mercier who eventually emerged victoriously, defeating Mike Watson heads-up to capture the sixth bracelet of his illustrious career.

Dzivielevski (Not That One) Bags the Chip Lead on Day 2 of the $5K NLHE 6-Max

Yuri Dzivielevski won his third WSOP bracelet earlier this month, and now his brother, Vitor, has a glorious chance of bagging his own WSOP hardware. Vitor Dzivielevski (3,425,000) is the chip leader going into Day 3 of Event #65: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em (6-Handed).

Only 48 players remain in contention for the title and the $938,244 prize money that comes with the victory.

Pedro Garagnani (3,220,000), Cody Jones (2,855,000), Chuanshu Chen (2,52,000), and Norbert Szecsi (2,345,000) round out the overnight top five.

Others to watch for on Day 3 include Tyler Cornell (2,125,000), Georgios Sotiropoulos (1,960,000), Danny Tang (1,940,000), Leon Sturm (1,690,000), Yuliyan Kolev (1,540,000), Ryan Leng (1,425,000), Artur Martirosian (745,000), and Scott Seiver (615,000).

Only 13 Super Seniors Remain; Malboubi Leads Them Into the Final Day

The field of Event #61: $1,000 Super Seniors has been slashed to only 13 from 3,121, and it is Rassoul Malboubi (10,150,000) who is in pole position going into the fourth and final day’s action.

Malboubi is the only player with an eight-figure stack, although Farhad Davoudzadeh (9,000,000) is only a handful of big blinds behind him. Davoudzadeh started Day 3 as the chip leader and built on his previous solid start to continue his quest for poker gold.

None of the remaining 13 players have a bracelet to their name but that will change on June 30 when one of them will become this event’s champion, capturing a coveted gold bracelet and the $371,603 top prize.

Prociak Leads the Final 5 in the NLHE/PLO Mixed Event

Miller is the Man to Catch in the Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Championship

Event #63: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship was meant to crown its champion, but the scheduled final day ended with six players still in the hunt.

Ryan Miller (2,230,000) leads those six stars back into battle, his stack putting him narrowly ahead of Bryn Kenney (2,035,000) in second place.

Maximilian Schindler (1,910,000), the Day 2 chip leader, is nicely poised in third, while Andres Korn (1,300,000), David “Chino” Rheem (525,000) and Eddie Blumenthal (455,000) have some catching up to do.

Event #67: $1,000 Ladies Championship saw 1,295 women buy in, eclipsing last year’s record attendance by nine entries. After the completion of ten levels, only 330 of those starter had chips in front of them.

Bernice McLennan (276,500) bagged up the most chips at the close of play, but she is being chased down by some talented ladies, so has much work ahead of her if she is to becoming this tournament’s champion.

As predicted, Event #68: $1,000 Super Turbo Bounty did not crown its champion in a single day, as there was not enough time to whittle the bumper 2,854 crowd to a victor. The WSOP tournament directors called time on proceedings when there were nine players remaining, and those players will head back to their seats at 2:00 p.m. on June 30.

Gabriel Schroeder (13,675,000) is the man to catch on Day 2 although anything could happen because almost everyone is short-stacked. Five of the finalists, including Irishman Andy Black (2,600,000), have sub=10 big blind stacks, so expect the action to be fast and furious on June 30 when PokerNews‘ coverage resumes.

Jason Mercier Defeats Mike Watson to Capture Sixth WSOP Bracelet



After four-day of play in Event #60: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP), a returning Jason Mercier beat Mike Watson in heads-up play to capture his sixth gold bracelet and the $151,276 first-place prize.

It was a repeat showdown of the 2016 WSOP $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Championship, where Mercier overcame Watson to secure his fourth piece of WSOP hardware.

The event saw 548 entries and generated a $731,580 prize pool. Mercier took the lions share, while Watson was awarded $93,495 for his runner-up finish.

Mercier Back for Good?

Mercier discussed the unlikely repeat matchup against Watson, saying, “I’ve been three-handed with him four separate times in major events, and I’ve won all four. So he’s gotten second twice and third twice. But in particular, we played heads up for the no-limit deuce bracelet in the $10K in 2016. So it was definitely a bit of déja vu.”

“You know, going into heads up, I was a little worried that he was finally going to get me. But luckily, I ran hot and was able to beat him again.”

Mercier burst on the scene in 2008, racking up at least a million dollars in earnings in nine of the ten years until 2017, ranking him at the time number 11 on the cash leaderboard to go with those five WSOP bracelets. Then he walked away, choosing to take a break from poker to focus on his family.

“After my son was born, I knew things were going to be different,” Mercier he wrote on the PokerStars blog at the time. “Becoming a parent brings about a complete transformation of who you are. I no longer let myself be so concerned with what I want but more so with the well-being of my wife and my child (and future children). Serving and leading my family is of utmost importance.”

In 2022 Mercier returned from his self-imposed exile (now with three children in his growing family), appearing to have not lost a single step from those five years off. He notched a 6th place finish in 2022’s WSOP $50,000 High Roller Pot-Limit Omaha event and 16th in the $10,000 Razz Championship, and earlier this year earned the first place prize in the PokerGO $25,000 10-Game Championship.

Mercier discussed how he was able to continue where he left off despite poker changing so much in the intervening years. “Everyone’s a lot better. The game is different. There’s just not as many people that are drawing dead at the game.”

But he admitted he hasn’t studied up to prepare for the new poker strategies, preferring to hone his skills through play. “I’m not much of a studier. I just kind of play and get my experience by playing more hands. “So it’s kind of like riding a bike, you know? I just hopped back on.”

Erik Seidel was masterly in making a run at capturing his tenth-career WSOP bracelet and his second in no-limit 2-7, applying his many years of experience and wiles with a quiet deadliness that left a trail of busted players in his wake.

However, despite finding an early double through Jon Turner, Seidel was the first to exit on the final day after being felted by Watson.

Short stack Turner was next to depart after his stack was collected by Brad Ruben. Ruben had a pat ninety-eight, and Turner was unable to draw winning cards to his 6x5x4x, ending his day in fourth place.

Similar to Mercier, Ruben was on the hunt for his sixth bracelet and was the favorite after coming into Day 4 as the chip leader. But after doubling up Watson in an incredibly close hand, he was suddenly the short stack. His third place bust out would come at the hands of Mercier.

Heads-up play was a tight affair, but after ninety minutes, Mercier took the lead when his ten-seven pipped his opponent’s jack-seven.

Mercier extended that lead by taking laying a trap with a jack-nine, and snapping when Watson bet with a pair of queens.

Mercier’s relentless pressure soon backed Watson into a corner, and when Mercier bet to put Watson all-in, he had no choice but to call. Watson still had a fighting chance when it was revealed each had a ten-eight draw, but Mercier drew better, hitting a five.

Former NFL Player Faces Lawsuit Over $53k Gambling Debt

Former NFL player turned reality television star Kroy Biermann is facing a lawsuit over a $52,500 casino debt. He allegedly owes this money to the Baha Mar Casino in the Bahamas. The plaintiff also wants to recoup legal fees and interest.

Sky Warrior, the company that looks after the property’s credit lines, claims in the lawsuit that the former linebacker borrowed $100,000 in November 2021 to gamble at the facility. He never repaid $52,500 worth of chip markers, according to the complaint.

Kroy Biermann was an outside linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons between 2008 and 2015. He briefly joined the Buffalo Bills before getting cut in 2016.

Biermann isn’t the only one who seemingly has accumulated significant gambling losses. He has accused his soon-to-be ex-wife of having a gambling problem. During recent divorce proceedings, Biermann claimed that she spent “substantial time and marital funds on gambling and other games of chance.”

Upcoming WSOP Circuit Schedule is Out; $1 Million Freeroll Returns



The schedule for the 2023-2024 World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC), which begins July 19, has been released, and it includes 25 stops over a 10-month period.

Circuit ring action kicks off in Durant, Oklahoma at the popular Choctaw Casino and Resort, one of the top poker rooms in the central United States. At the conclusion of the Circuit season, every player who won a ring throughout the year — live and online — will be automatically entered into the Tournament of Champions at the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, which is a $1 million freeroll.

What’s on the Circuit Schedule?

The 19th season of the World Series of Poker Circuit poker tour will have two additional stops at Choctaw, one in December and the other in January. Following the initial trip to Southern Oklahoma, the action will head out east to another one of its most popular annual spots, Horseshoe Cherokee (North Carolina) August 3-14.

Full series schedules aren’t yet available, only the dates. But we do have a list of all the stops in what could be the biggest WSOP Circuit season ever, and it begins just days after the conclusion of what is already becoming the largest WSOP ever.

“We are on pace to make history with the largest WSOP of all time this year and have already hosted ten record-breaking events so far at the 2023 WSOP,” said Senior Vice President and Executive Director of the World Series of Poker, Ty Stewart. “As the excitement around the game of poker continues to grow exponentially, we expect this energy to roll into the WSOP Circuit the summer, setting some records along the way as well.”

Among the other destinations on the 2023-2024 WSOP Circuit schedule include Thunder Valley Casino (Northern California), Horseshoe Tunica (Mississippi), and Hard Rock (Tulsa).

The 2022-2023 Circuit season wrapped in May with Maurice Hawkins winning his record-setting 15th Circuit ring, moving alone into first place ahead of Josh Reichard (14).

Doyle Brunson’s last cash at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) came in 2018, and it was one of the most memorable moments in poker history.

Today is the perfect day to look back on that incredible event, the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship, because it just happens to be Day 1 of the same tournament (Event #69) at the 2023 WSOP.

Brunson, who passed away last month at 89, made a surprise appearance on that day in 2018. His son and fellow Poker Hall of Famer Todd Brunson convinced his dad to register for the event on Day 2, and it had been a few years since Doyle had competed at the World Series of Poker.

Doyle Spins Up a Stack

Prior to arriving at the Rio, Doyle teased on Twitter that it might be his last tournament ever. As such, the poker media and poker fans all gathered inside the legendary Amazon room to catch a glimpse of one of the all-time greats in action for what some anticipated would be the last time.

“Texas Dolly” would continue playing the occasional tournament until he passed, and even entered a few bracelet events at the 2022 WSOP. But during that 2-7 tournament five years ago, the focus from just about everyone connected to poker was on Brunson’s apparent final appearance. And then the unpredictable happened.

Entering the 2018 WSOP, Doyle hadn’t cashed at the WSOP since 2013, and his 10th and final bracelet came in 2005. He was mostly a high-stakes cash game player at Bellagio during his elder years. The old WSOP crusher Doyle Brunson would show up one last time on Day 2 of the 2-7 when he quickly ran up a stack.

He earned an early double at the expense of future WSOP Player of the Year, Dan Zack. From there, his stack would continue to grow.

At the end of Day 2, with 11 players remaining, Brunson was in fourth place. Todd Brunson had also advanced to Day 3, creating a memorable father-son moment, although he was among the short stacks.

Reaching the Final Table

On the following day it was all about getting back to a WSOP final table and moving into second place all-time with 11 bracelets for Brunson. Heading into the series, he was tied in that position with Johnny Chan and Phil Ivey. Phil Hellmuth, who now has 16 bracelets, was sitting on 14 at the time.

As players began to fall on Day 3 and Brunson wasn’t one of them, the buzz began to pick up in the Amazon room much like when the Main Event final table was approaching. Could he pull it off and win his 11th bracelet at age 84 in what many expected to be his final appearance at the World Series of Poker?

After Farzad Bonyadi busted in eighth place, the final table was set and Doyle was still standing. He was second to last in chips with seven players remaining, but wasn’t that far off the lead. But when Brian Rast eliminated John Hennigan in seventh place, there began to be some wide separation from the chip leaders to the smaller stacks.

With the blinds getting big, Doyle would lose a key pot to Dario Sammartino and was down to just seven big blinds. Moments later, James Alexander would claim his remaining chips. Brunson was out in sixth place for $43,963, the last time he’d cash in any live poker tournament, excluding a WSOP celebrity freeroll in 2021.

Although he came up just short of the bracelet, the deep run was still an incredible moment for the poker community, so much so that ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt paid tribute to the poker legend on the world-renowned SportsCenter show that evening. Brunson’s expected retirement and deep run in the 2-7 was all over poker and non-poker mainstream media. In a career filled with brilliant moments, this was right up there near the top.

Rast, the favorite to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023, would go on to win that event, his fourth of six bracelets.

As America gears up for the most patriotic celebration of the year, we’re paying tribute to the nation’s most legendary landmarks that define the country’s identity. From coast to coast, the U.S. boasts an array of prominent landmarks that dazzle the eyes of many and leave visitors breathless. So much so that they have written raving reviews about their experience on Tripadvisor. 

Join us as we embark on a patriotic journey to unravel the 15 most iconic landmarks. What constitutes as “iconic”, you say? We web scraped Tripadvisor, using the key term “iconic” to find the total number of mentions across users’ “Things to Do” reviews. In spirit of the Fourth of July and all-things American, we set the location to the U.S. only.

With over 2,600 historical landmarks, it’s no secret that the country is mighty and massive. So, we asked the following question: Mirror, mirror, on the wall…which city holds the most iconic one of all? 

Key Findings 

  • Eight of the top 15 landmarks are located on the East coast. 
  • New York City, itself, is home to seven distinguished landmarks.
  • The Empire State Building is the most iconic nationwide – with 4,441 mentions overall. 
  • The Golden Gate Bridge is the most iconic in the West coast – with 3,512 mentions overall.

Is the West coast really the best coast?

Nothing screams America more than a good ole’ East vs. West coast competition. As the ongoing rivalry continues, it comes as no surprise that New York and California hold some of the nation’s most prominent landmarks. But hold your horses because “We the People” have spoken! Housing over half (53.3%) of the 15 most iconic historical monuments, the East takes the cake for being red, white, and blue.

The city of New York waves its stars and stripes as it is home to seven of 15 iconic landmarks: Empire State Building (1st), Grand Central Terminal (3rd), Statue of Liberty (4th), Central Park (5th), Times Square (6th), Brooklyn Bridge (7th), and Rockefeller Center (12th). You can’t outbeat the concrete jungle, where dreams are made of!

The nation’s capitol, Washington D.C., is a place of residence for 75 national treasures – but only one made it in the top 15. The 19-foot Lincoln Memorial (8th) leaves thousands of tourists in awe with its larger-than-life presence and historical value. 

Although it was a close draw, the Pacific coast still has iconic and historical roots – more specifically, California. Home to five-star celebrities, theme parks, and beautiful weather, it’s no surprise the Golden State holds a few famed landmarks. While the city of San Francisco boasts the Golden Gate Bridge (2nd) and Cable Cars (10th), Los Angeles (rightfully) beams the Hollywood Sign (13th) and the Santa Monica Pier (14th) offers the best fishing spot, and loads of fun! 

Feeling sleepless in Seattle? Head on over to the 605-foot Space Needle (9th) that offers sightseers phenomenal views of the city that they’ll never forget. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a peak below through the glass floor while you’re up there.

Ah, Las Vegas. A city where eloping, blowing cash, and partying like there’s no tomorrow doesn’t earn you a side eye. On the more touristy-side, you can visit the notable Fountains of Bellagio (11th) and the famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign (15th) – both are “must-sees” according to people’s Tripadvisor reviews.

Let’s talk numbers: Total “iconic” mention counts for America’s landmarks

Below, you can find the exact number of times the key term “iconic” was used for each landmark’s listing on Tripadvisor. 

Starting from the top, the Empire State Building was iconic to 4,441 visitors as mentioned in their reviews. Not only is it the world’s first 100+ story building, but it’s been visited by some of the most famous celebrities like Mariah Carey, Tom Cruise, Bill Clinton, and King Kong!

The Golden Gate Bridge boasts a nice 3,512 mentions of the word “iconic” in thousands of people’s reviews. The suspension bridge is so prominent, it’s recognized as one of the Wonders of the Modern World! The Cable Cars may not rank close to 2nd, but it placed itself in the top 10 list with 1,023 travelers labeling it as iconic.

As New York City continues to collect thousands of “iconic” mentions for the Grand Central Terminal, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, the Lincoln Memorial sits at a nice 1,151 mentions of “iconic.” Honesty is the best policy AND sight-seeing activity! 

To finish off the landmarks that made it into the “thousands” club, the Space Needle left an impressionable impact on 1,064 Tripadvisor users. For a landmark that was built in 400 days with a stunning Space Age design, we are also quite impressed.

The landmarks that received less than 1,000 “iconic” mentions were the Fountains of Bellagio (839), Rockefeller Center (758), Hollywood Sign (741), Santa Monica Pier (724) and the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign (709). Don’t get it twisted, however! They’re still iconic as they’re still ranked in the nation’s top 15.

Methodology

To find the best American landmarks across the country, we searched the key term “iconic” on Tripadvisor’s “Things to Do” category, with the location set to the U.S. only. Through this, we were able to see how many times “iconic” was used in each listing’s reviews, allowing us to collect the names, location, and number of mentions from each landmark’s listing. Landmarks were then listed from highest to lowest to see the final ranking nationwide.

The data was collected in June 2023.
