Poker Movie Review: ‘Poker Face’ Screenplay is an Incoherent Mess

Poker Movie Review: 'Poker Face' Screenplay is an Incoherent Mess

Poker Face (2022), the newest poker-ish themed movie starring Russell Crowe, is now available on Amazon Prime ($5.99 to rent), Vudu, and DVD, but there are certainly better ways to spend your money, including but not limited to lighting it on fire.

Brian Koppelman can breathe a sigh of relief knowing his 1998 flick, Rounders, will remain in its rightful position as the nearly universally accepted best poker movie ever.

Poker Face’s Confusing Plot

Poker Face, an Australian-American thriller, has a number of confusing moments and a plot that doesn’t coherently work together. It almost seemed like someone deleted filmed scenes and the production team was forced to just slop something together in time for the expected release date.

Take, for example, a scene at an art gallery in which the main character Jake Foley (Crowe) is approached by a woman who is fascinated with his apparent interest in rare art. She asks for permission to paint a portrait of him and records a brief interview with Jake to get some insight into who he is.

“It was one of only a few early scenes that had much relevance to the movie as a whole.”

At the time in the movie, about 20 minutes into a slow-developing flick that wasn’t really going anywhere, it seemed as if this unidentified woman was about to become an important character. Perhaps a love interest for Jake or maybe even a con artist attempting to get her hands on the billions Jake made from the online poker site he created and the tech company he’d eventually build. Instead, she didn’t appear again in the movie until literally the last minute.

That scene did, however, introduce to viewers Jake’s passion for expensive art, which comes into play later in the film. But it was one of only a few early scenes that had much relevance to the movie as a whole.

Poker-Themed Movie ‘Molly’s Game’ Gets Mostly Positive Early Reviews

Not Much Poker

If you were expecting an actual poker movie, Poker Face will disappoint. Actually, it will likely disappoint regardless of your expectations. After about 40 minutes of confusing or just plain irrelevant dialogue, Jake invites four of his childhood friends to a snazzy retreat where they’ll play a game of no-limit Texas hold’em with a $5 million buy-in winner-take-all format ($25 million).

Poker Face

This is where the movie goes from confusing to “WTF am I even watching” status. One of the players in the game is Michael, played by Liam Hemsworth, who is 26 years younger than Crowe, yet they’re supposed to be childhood friends.

The game eventually begins and lasts all of one hand, in which two players with jack-ten are all in on the turn with the nut straight, but both have a redraw to a flush. The river bricks and the pot is anti-climactically chopped.

So as to not spoil the ending, for the two or three of you who are still interested in watching Poker Face, we’ll leave out the specifics of what transpires following the brief poker game. But some armed robbers bust into the home, steal Jake’s rare art collection and a good old-fashioned stand-off ensues.

For what it’s worth, the production quality of Poker Face was solid. Crowe, who co-wrote and directed the movie, has starred in many Blockbuster flicks. But this was no Gladiator by any stretch of the imagination. It wasn’t even The Mummy.

On a positive note, Poker Face is a quick film — 129 minutes — not long enough to ruin your entire evening.

Play’n GO’s Mötley Crüe Adds to an Impressive Library of Music Slots

Play’n GO’s Mötley Crüe Adds to an Impressive Library of Music Slots

Play’n GO continues to add to its already prolific catalog of music slots with a new release featuring 80s hair band Mötley Crüe.

The game follows on the heels of two of the most recent releases – *NSYNC Pop and Lordi Reel Monsters and features the band’s iconic frontman Nikki Sixx along with Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, and Vince Neil leading the player in a night out with the band.

Of course, this release is not simply a matter of slapping some glam-rock face paint on another game and calling it new. Players will find a mix of highly innovative features and legacy bonus mechanics to amp up hours of thrilling gameplay. Look for band-specific features in the base game like Wild Side, Live Wire, and Girls, Girls, Girls. Trigger the free spins to unlock an immersive feature and bring the band to life right on your mobile or desktop.

A Dynamic Game for all Musical Tastes

No matter if the Crüe doesn’t fit with your taste in music, the gameplay is dynamic enough for everyone. When the bonus feature is activated the club doors are opened and part of a Girls, Girls, Girls music video is presented – but that’s not the only song on the setlist. In addition to Live Wire and Wild Side, you’ll unlock Shout at the Devil when you make it to the free spins round. Four songs is enough to keep gameplay fresh for short or long sessions.

Pulse to the neon visuals and get lost in the interwoven music and dynamic game sound play. Edgy animations are a hallmark of this game as is the show-stopping pyrotechnics the band is well known for.

Charlotte Miliziano, Head of Games at Play’n GO, said: “We’re so proud of this title. Mötley Crüe is a prime example of how we are constantly and consistently taking our games to the next level.

“The features in this game are epic. I mean Girls, Girls Girls alone puts players in a music video, how many slots can say they transform into an interactive music video?

Robust Catalog of Retro Music Slots

In case you missed any of the previous music slot releases like Testament or Def Leppard Histeria we’ll mention a few here. The catalog includes Lordi Reel Monsters, Twisted Sister, KISS Reels of Rock, *NSYNC Pop, Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness, and ZZ Top Roadside Riches to name just a few of their retro music slots on offer.

Alice Cooper and KISS were released in 2021 and are two of the most iconic rock and roll games on the market. Each title offers a deep dive into the atmosphere of the band with plenty of “mood music” to go with the gameplay.

A massive swing in subject matter was the 2022 release of *NSYNC, featuring the band’s hit song, Pop, which was released by the band and rose to Number One in 2001. Another 2022 release will go down in history as a game-changer and as a masterpiece of engaging slot play. Lordi Reel Monsters features the Finnish-based band’s full roster of characters but it also includes purpose-built original music and an exclusive music video.

6 Reasons NEVER To Count Cards In Blackjack

6 Reasons NEVER To Count Cards In Blackjack

When it comes to getting an edge over the casino, many players look to card counting.

This age-old practice involves keeping a mental tally of the cards dealt, so you know information about the cards that haven’t been dealt.

Many people believe that card counting is illegal, but that’s not actually the case.

It’s certainly frowned upon by casinos, however, who will quickly remove any player they think is dabbling in this practice.

Card counting is seen by many players as a great way to get one over on the house, but we’ve decided to present a different viewpoint here.

Instead of talking about why card counting is great, we’re going to be looking at the reasons why you shouldn’t bother counting cards when you’re next at the blackjack table.

1. Profit Margins Are Actually Pretty Thin

If you’ve been inspired by the MIT blackjack card counting team, who managed to scoop millions at the tables, then prepare to be disappointed.

While it’s true that they managed to win a huge amount of cash, this isn’t the case for most players.

Card counting only gives you a small advantage over the casino, so you’ll find that most players win money very slowly.

You might get lucky and win a couple of thousand one night, but there’s every chance you’ll hit the tables the next evening and walk away with a loss.

That’s the nature of advantage gambling.

2. It’s Not Much Fun

For most people, the main
reason to visit a casino is to have some fun.

When it comes to card counting, you’ll find that it’s not particularly exciting.

It requires you to spend hours at a time sitting at the table, trying to subtly work out how advantageous the deck is to you.

You’ll be thinking so much
about counting cards that you won’t be able to chat to others or enjoy the cold
beer sitting next to you.

3. It’s Hard To Master

You can’t just jump in and start card counting as there is quite a bit you need to learn first.

You’ll need to know basic blackjack strategy, which isn’t actually very basic, and then you’ll need to perfect one of the many different card counting systems.

Once you’ve learned how to count cards, the work isn’t over.

You then need to work hard on your demeanour at the table, as you mustn’t give even the slightest hint that you’re counting cards.

Start playing for real money
without preparing yourself properly and you’ll probably find yourself rumbled
in the first few minutes, leading to you being unceremoniously bounced from the
venue.

👉 How Casinos Catch Card Counters

4. You Need A Lot Of Cash To Start With

Many people think that
counting cards will guarantee profits, however this is only partly true.

You’ll only be tilting the house edge in your favor by a couple of percent when counting cards, so there’s no guarantee you’ll start winning straightaway.

Instead, you might have to wait weeks, months or even years to turn a profit.

It’s vital to know that counting cards is a long-term game and if you don’t plan for this, you could find yourself running out of money before the goal is achieved.

This means you need to start with a hefty bankroll – the MIT team started with $89,000.

The chances are your modest $200 bankroll really won’t be enough to beat the system, even at the lowest stakes tables.

5. You Will Get Caught

Card counting is not illegal.
This means that many nonchalantly try it, thinking the worst that will happen
is a telling off. This is not the case.

If you’re caught card counting at a casino, you’ll be ejected from the premises immediately.

You also won’t be able to redeem your chips with a cashier, meaning that you’ll be embarrassed and broke.

What’s more, you might really
like the casino you’re ejected from. The security staff won’t care though, as
you’ll be banned, never able to return.

You’ll then need to find
another place to play, which could be tough, as you’ll see next…

6. Then You’ll Get Banned All Over Town

When you get caught card
counting – which you will almost certainly be at some point – you won’t just be
banned from one casino.

Instead, you’ll find your
picture circulated throughout the local area, meaning that you won’t be able to
get into any other casinos either.

When this happens, you’ll not be allowed to enter a casino for any reason.

Invited for a work party? You’ll be parting outside, solo. Want to play slot slots? You still won’t be allowed in.

Quite simply, you’ll have to accept that it will probably be many years before you step into a local casino again.

Hopefully you enjoy playing
online games, as they’ll be the only option open to you.

The Lesson?
Leave Card Counting To The Movie Industry

Card counting is a hard skill to master so you’ll need to put in a lot of work before you’re ready to head to a casino.

And when you do, even if you can count cards better than the MIT team, you’re going to get caught out eventually.

It’s unlikely you’ll ever make loads of money through card counting, so is it really worth the risk of getting kicked out and banned from casinos?

It’s up to you to weigh up the pros and cons…

Ohio Regulator Planning to Fine BetMGM, Caesars, and DraftKings Over Sports Betting Ads

Gavel and cash

Numerous violations

While sports betting has only been up and running for less than a week in Ohio, the state’s gambling regulator has been busy taking enforcement action over various marketing-related failings. The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has issued notices of violation to BetMGM, Caesars, and DraftKings for allegedly violating state laws relating to advertising and promoting sports betting in the state.

The OCCC wants to issue a $150,000 fine to each of the operators.

The OCCC wants to issue a $150,000 fine to each of the operators. They allegedly ran ads across numerous mediums that did not include the necessary responsible gambling message.

They also used terms such as “risk-free” and “free” when promoting bonus offers that actually required people to risk their own money. All gambling-related marketing materials in Ohio need to “clearly and conspicuously” contain a message aimed at preventing problem gambling, as well as provide a helpline number.

Taking no prisoners

Each operator is granted a hearing and due process for the allegations. During a public meeting, the OCCC will hold a vote regarding any potential action against the operators.

The legal sports betting market in Ohio only launched on January 1, with both retail and online sportsbooks going live at the same time.

In a press release regarding violations, OCCC executive director Matthew Schuler said: “These repeated violations leave the Commission no choice but to pursue administrative action to bring operators into compliance.” He noted that sportsbook operators had received many reminders of the standards they must adhere to when promoting their products.

Previous issues

The OCCC is certainly taking an active approach to make sure that sportsbook operators follow the rules and regulations to the letter of the law. In addition to the latest potential penalties, the commission took action against two operators before Ohio’s sports betting industry even launched.

DraftKings had already received a notice of violation in Ohio last week. The OCCC wants to fine the prominent operator $350,000 for allegedly mailing about 2,500 ads directly to people who are underage. Penn Entertainment’s Barstool Sports betting brand was alleged to have broken rules regarding promoting gambling on a college campus and/or to people younger than 21 years old and is facing a $250,000 fine.

will continue to closely monitor gambling-related marketing

Following the announcement of these violations, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his unhappiness with the behavior of operators, saying that they had crossed a line in their advertising. He underlined that the OCCC and the governor’s office will continue to closely monitor gambling-related marketing.

Nunavut Gambling Laws ✔️ Land-Based & NU Online Gambling Laws

Licences Regulations Books Laws

Nunavut Gambling Laws & Canadian Gambling Laws

You may not know that, but Nunavut is the largest province in Canada that stretches its vast territory over the Arctic Archipelago. Nunavut province has about 116,000 people and has the highest percentage of Inuit, First Nation Peoples, and Metis in Canada. There are no territorial political parties, but there is a Nunavut consensus-based governance.

Despite it is an independent province, Nunavut follows the main Canadian laws, including the gambling legislation. There are no Nunavut gambling laws regulating casinos, but in August 2021, the province authorised its retail sportsbooks to offer single-event bets. Here is what more you need to know about gambling in Nunavut:

🎲 Nunavut Gambling ✔️ Details
⚖️ Nunavut Gambling Laws Nunavut Lotteries Act (of 1988, Last Amended in 2021)
🍁 Canadian Gambling Laws Canadian Criminal Code
👨‍💼 Authorities Department of Health Department of Community and Government Services Western Canada Lottery Corporation
♠️ Land-Based Gambling Legal
🎰 Online Gambling Not illegal
🎂 Nunavut Gambling Age 19 for Casinos, Poker & Sports Betting 16 for Official Lotteries
💰 Winners Tax Not Taxable Under Canadian Law (interest on the winnings is taxable)
🚓 Gambling Crimes Illegal gambling activities are considered a crime, and perpetrators are punished

The Nunavut laws regulating gambling relate only to lotteries and sports betting. The situation in this Canadian province is quite interesting because the games legalised by the gambling laws in Canada are available, but there are a few places to play. The good thing is that Nunavut rules of court do not pursue online gamblers unless in exceptional circumstances we will mention further down this article.

There is no Nunavut prohibition over gambling games, so anyone over the legal gambling age can participate at licenced locations and online gambling sites. Any player who wins a prize while gambling is free from Nunavut taxes because the provincial government chose to follow Canadian laws.

Gambling Licences & Responsible Gambling in NU, Canada

The Nunavut law about gambling states that any operator intending to offer wagering games must have a provincial licence. There is no surprise since this is the base requirement for all brick-and-mortar locations and for the best Canadian casinos online for 2023. In the next paragraphs, we will explain the licencing procedure and the responsible gambling policy in Nunavut province.

Gambling Licences in Nunavut, Canada

There might not be a Nunavut casino law, but there is a Department of Community and Government Services dealing with all gambling-related matters and monitoring all land-based and online gambling activities. Betting industry will ‘keep back funds from gambling harm charity’ | Gambling

The betting industry has threatened to redirect a quarter of the funds expected to go to a charity tackling harms caused by gambling, the Guardian understands.

The four largest members of the Betting and Gaming Council have in the past pledged to use GambleAware as the main commissioner of any money it gave to tackle problems caused by its activities.

But sources at GambleAware said the charity was informed in recent weeks by BGC that in future, 25% of funds would be kept back to distribute directly to projects chosen by Bet365, Flutter Entertainment, GVC Holdings and William Hill.

The industry-funded charity currently chooses how money is spent to tackle gambling harm – whether that is on research, education and prevention work, or treatment. In its last funding announcement in 2020, the BGC pledged to use GambleAware as the main commissioning agent to spend £100m over four years to 2024 on projects it chose.

The BGC said its position had not changed and that it will have given them £110m by 2024, but sources at GambleAware said there had been a significant shift in plans for how further money tackling industry harm would be spent.

The former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: “The fact that the BGC are taking a unilateral decision to redirect 25% of future funds away from GambleAware to fund its own chosen causes could not set out more clearly why a statutory levy to fund research, education and treatment is absolutely essential.

“This racket of the gambling industry deciding when, how much and now where money is spent to deal with the harm it causes simply has to end.”

The threat comes as a government white paper on gambling is expected early this year. Those close to negotiations over its contents say No 10 is actively considering introducing a statutory levy on the industry, which would force firms to pay a certain amount into an independently – run central fund that could commission services.

It is understood the statutory levy was off the table under Liz Truss, but Rishi Sunak is now considering it, which is the reason for the delay.

The gambling industry pays a voluntary levy to fund research, education and treatment (RET), but experts believe the rate needs to be legally binding. Gambling licences are conditional on making an annual contribution but according to analysis by GambleAware last year, the recommended rate of 0.1% of gross gambling yield had never been met. The industry disputes this.

The Labour peer Hilary Armstrong, who sits on the board of GambleAware, said: “I understand that for the next three years, the proposal of the gambling companies is that they very much want a voluntary levy to continue and that about a quarter of what they will give, they will decide themselves which organisations they’re going to support, rather than putting it through GambleAware. So there’s no accountability. And there’s no transparency around, you know, how this money is spent, and whether it is effective.”

GambleAware has been criticised for being too close to the industry, for example by focusing in education programmes on the idea of “problem gambling,” which some say is a key narrative pushed by industry to deflect from the addictive nature of products they promote. But the charity has been publicly supportive of a statutory levy and experts believe the BGC may be flexing its muscles by threatening to withdraw funds.

Will Prochaska, the strategy director of the charity Gambling With Lives, which supports families whose relatives died of gambling-related suicide, said: “This isn’t just about money it’s about influence. The industry is warning GambleAware that if they don’t toe their line the funding will be removed. Whichever other charities receive the windfall in GambleAware’s place will be being rewarded for supporting the industry’s philosophy of individual responsibility.

“It would be outrageous for the tobacco industry to control who delivers smoking cessation campaigns, so why is the gambling industry given such sway over who delivers research, education or treatment for gambling-related harm?”

Zoe Osmond, the chief executive of GambleAware, said: “As the leading charity dedicated to keeping people safe from gambling harm, GambleAware has long recognised the need, and been calling for, a more sustainable, long-term funding solution to address gambling harms.

“The current system of voluntary donation is opaque, and we hope that the upcoming gambling white paper will provide a much needed committed and consistent approach to funding.”

A spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said: “We are determined to protect those most at risk of gambling-related harm and are working to finalise details of our review. The white paper will strengthen our regulatory framework to ensure it is fit for the digital age.”

A spokesperson for the BGC said it had gone beyond its initial pledge “and will have provided £110m to GambleAware by the end of March 2024”. They added: “The industry has no say on how this voluntary funding is spent by charities, nor does it seek one. However, we are concerned that GambleAware refuses to publicly provide transparency on how these funds have been spent.

“GambleAware were never intended to receive all of the RET funding, only the baseline of £100m over four years, and our members are proud to support a range of initiatives in addition to this, such as the YGAM GamCare young people’s gambling harm prevention programme with an additional £10m.”

bet365 Group’s Profit Sank by 95%, Revenue Marginally up

bet365 Group’s Profit Sank by 95%, Revenue Marginally up

Stoke-on-Trent-based online gambling operator bet365 Group filed its annual report for the financial year 2021-22, posting a marginal increase in revenue but a nearly 95% slump in profit.

Stable Revenue, Spike in Administrative Expenses

For the 52 weeks ended March 27, 2022, bet365 Group registered revenue of £2.87 billion ($3.42 billion), with more than 99% of it generated from sports betting operations. Compared to the financial year ended March 27, 2021, when the group achieved a turnover of £2.82 billion ($3.38 billion), revenue growth was just under 2%.

A breakdown of sports and gaming revenue shows that sports betting revenue was down 2% while gaming revenue was up by 25%. According to the group, the decline in sports betting revenue was due to lower margins as the total amounts wagered and the number of active customers increased.

Direct costs of sales accounted for £496.34 million ($595.61 million), up 1.3% from £489.81 million ($587.77 million) in the previous comparable period, leading to gross operating profit for the financial year 2021-22 of £2.38 billion ($2.86 billion), up 2.1% to £2.33 billion ($2.79 billion) in financial 2020-21.

Administrative expenses jumped by 15.6% to £2.36 billion ($2.83 billion) as compared to £2.04 billion ($2.45 billion) in the previous comparable period, resulting in a nearly 95% drop in operating profit to £15.4 million ($18.5 million) from £285.5 million ($342.6 million) in the financial year 2020-21.

A further breakdown of administrative expenses shows that those attributed to Stoke FC and its facilities declined by 43.5% to £48.1 million ($57.7 million) while administrative expenses attributed to sports and gaming rose by 18% to £2.31 billion ($2.77 billion).

According to bet365 Group, the rise in expenses was due to its spending to support its expansion strategy in North America. During the financial year, bet365 expanded its payroll with more than 500 new employees, including managers, supervisors, operations, and service support staff, while operations staff related to the football club decreased slightly.

Denis Coates’ Annual Pay Decreased

The results also affected the annual pay of 55-year-old majority shareholder and co-chief executive officer of bet365 Group, Denis Coates, who received about £272 million ($326.4 million) during the financial year 2021-22, according to the registry filing.

In the previous financial year, the highest-paid director of the group and the UK’s richest woman banked nearly £300 million ($360 million) despite taking pay and dividend cuts.

Despite the drop, Coates, who received a £213.4 million ($256 million) salary and around £58 million ($69.6 million) in dividends is set to remain among the world’s best-paid executives.

Bally’s, GLPI Completed Previously Announced Sale-Leaseback

Bally’s Obtains City Council Vote, Gets One Stop Closer to Flagship Casino

Bally’s Corporation and Gaming & Leisure Properties (GLPI) announced that the acquisition of the land and real estate assets of Bally’s Tiverton Casino & Hotel in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and Bally’s Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi in Biloxi, Mississippi by GLPI is now completed for a total consideration of $635 million.

Bally’s Sells Real Estates, Leases Properties

The leaseback transaction was structured as a tax-free capital contribution, Bally’s stated in the press release, outlining that a large portion of the proceeds of the deal will go toward Bally’s Corporation’s debt reduction.

Bally’s chief financial officer Bobby Lavan was “pleased to have completed another transaction with GLPI,” convinced that the latest deal with the real estate investment trust (REIT) “marks an important step” for Bally’s as it ensures the gaming group “is best positioned for continued growth.”

The sale was initially announced in June 2022 as part of a massive sale-and-leaseback deal valued at $1 billion involving Bally’s casinos in Rhode Island, Tiverton Casino and Hotel and Twin River Lincoln Casino, under which GLPI’s operating partner, GLP Capital, will acquire the land and real estate assets of the properties.

Upon transaction close, the newly-acquired properties were added to Bally’s Master Lease with GLPI to expand the total properties under the master agreement to six and the rent Bally’s would pay to GLPI under its Master Lease increased by $48.5 million on an annual basis.

GLPI’s Option to Acquire Bally’s Twin River Casino

As part of the transaction, GLPI can exercise an option to acquire the land and real estate assets of Bally’s Twin River Casino Resort in Lincoln, Rhode Island, for $771 million before the end of 2024, subject to Bally’s consent.

In April last year, Bally’s and GLPI completed a similar sale-leaseback transaction for Bally’s Quad Cities in Rock Island, Illinois, and Bally’s Black Hawk in Black Hawk, Colorado. Both casino properties were acquired for a cash price of $150 million, and the properties were added to Bally’s Master Lease with GLPI, increasing the annual rent by $12 million initially.

As one of the largest casino-entertainment companies globally, Bally’s Corporation owns and manages 15 casinos across 10 US jurisdictions, as well as a horse racetrack in Colorado, and is currently building a temporary casino facility in Chicago, Illinois, and a land-based casino near the Nittany Mall in State College, Pennsylvania.

Bally’s also owns a global online gaming operator brand, Bally’s Interactive International, formerly known as Gamesys Group, a first-in-class sports betting platform, Bally Bet, and an online casino brand, Bally Casino.
