How to Set Resolutions That Last For 2023| FCCG

Preventing the Link Between Crime & Problem Gambling

Once the fireworks are over and the ball has dropped, it feels like anything is possible. While ringing in the new year doesn’t mean an instant clean slate, it’s a great opportunity to take a step back and reflect on the past year while looking forward to what you want to achieve in the next one. For those struggling with the impacts of problem gambling, setting intentional resolutions is the key to changing behavior and improving quality of life. Keep reading to learn how celebrate New Year’s Resolution Week (January 1st-7th) by selecting resolutions that matter and elevate one or more aspects of daily life.

Setting & Achieving Resolutions that Matter

The word “resolution” has a bit of a bad reputation, with many people leaving their well-intentioned gym plans and financial goals in the dust around the second week of January. However, this year we’re breaking that cycle and turning resolutions into realities with positive impacts that last well beyond 365 days.

A pro tip for those who are visual learners is to create a mood board with the resolutions and related images so you can have a physical reminder of what you want to accomplish. We also recommend telling a close family member or friend about your goals so they can help you achieve them or simply check in on your progress throughout the year. We firmly believe preparation is the key to success, and with the right game plan, 2023 can be the best year yet.

2023 Resolutions Guide

The first step to creating a list of resolutions is to choose a meaningful goal and then break it down into smaller components. For example, if someone is experiencing difficulties with gambling and wants to heal through recovery, that would be their overall goal. Once the overarching resolution is established, they should list out the steps they’ll take to achieve it, which in this case begins with calling the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling’s (FCCG) 24/7, confidential, and multilingual 888-ADMIT-IT Problem Gambling HelpLine. Other steps to recovery may include:

  • Spending more time with loved ones
  • Attending a self-help meeting
  • Taking advantage of the 888-ADMIT-IT Problem Gambling HelpLine’s free services
  • Investing time in other activities, such as golfing, traveling or art.

These steps can be adjusted to fit personal preferences and needs, but should still follow a few rules of thumb. They should:

  • Positively impact multiple areas of life
  • Be as specific as possible in the breakdown steps
  • Be able to be worked on every day
  • Be achievable based on schedule demands and starting point
  • Be Beneficial to overall wellness
  • Have set milestones so you can track progress

The Resources You Need to Succeed

Recovery is a team effort, not a solo sport, so as you tackle their resolutions this year, FCCG is here to provide the right resources for compulsive gamblers and their loved ones. Start the journey today by contacting the Problem Gambling HelpLine at 888-ADMIT-IT (888-236-4848), texting (321-978-0555), emailing ([email protected]), chatting (gamblinghelp.org), or visiting us on social media.

Las Vegas Poker Player Hits Record Pai Gow Poker Progressive Jackpot of $6.4m

Guy making it rain cash

A life-changing win

A poker player in Las Vegas has hit the biggest Pai Gow progressive jackpot of all time. Thomas Evans Zanot won the $6.4m jackpot on Saturday night at the Flamingo casino resort from a stake of just $5.

It will be hard to beat this as one of the biggest casino jackpot wins of any kind in Las Vegas this year. The Caesars Entertainment-owned Flamingo tweeted a picture of Zanot with his oversized jackpot check:

An experienced winner

An avid poker player, Zanot is originally from Arizona. According to the Hendon Mob database, he has cashed for more than $1.1m in live tournament poker play. It appears that he focuses on playing events that have low to medium-sized stakes. Just last month, he won $99,600 for finishing 33rd in the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas.

Talking about his big Pai Gow jackpot win on Twitter, Zanot explained that he had lost about $375 over the 11 or so hours of playing before he won the jackpot. A picture posted by an onlooker on Twitter shows the hand that ultimately Zanot won the life-changing sum (the casino later rearranged the hand for the photo-op):

A popular poker variant

In Pai Gow, the joker counts as part of a straight. In Zanot’s case, it replaced the king card. To win the biggest possible Pai Gow progressive jackpot, a player needs to make a side bet and then get a seven-card straight flush. The chances of getting a seven-card straight flush are very low, hence why the size of the jackpots for those who accomplish the feat tend to be so big.

People hit major Pai Gow progressive jackpots from time to time in Las Vegas. The other most recent notable win was in October when a player won a $3.5m jackpot at the Harrah’s casino resort.

Pai Gow poker is a game that players play against the house, with each person dealt seven cards. After a draw, players choose a low hand with two cards and a high hand with five cards in an attempt to beat the dealer’s hand. Casinos often offer side bets as part of Pai Gow poker hands, such as the one that saw Zanot win a progressive jackpot.

Senator Addabbo Talks about New York’s Three Newly Planned Casinos

Senator Addabbo Talks about New York’s Three Newly Planned Casinos

The New York Gaming Facility Location Board officially opened the process for three new full casino licenses. Several companies have already expressed interest in opening venues in prime locations, so competition is already heating up. Long-time gambling proponent Sen. Joseph Addabbo used the opportunity to discuss the process and share his insights on the future of gambling in New York State.

High-Profile Operators Will Battle for the Limited Licenses

3 January marked the official start for operators to start submitting their proposals for the three open full casino licenses in New York. Companies that win one of the coveted slots will be able to offer a Las Vegas-style casino experience with slot machines and table games. Successful applicants must pay a $500 million licensing fee and pledge to invest at least $500 million more in their project, requiring serious commitment.

Despite the high entry barrier, multiple operators have expressed interest in expanding to the relatively untapped New York market. MGM-owned Empire City Casino and Resorts World New York City appear to have the upper hand, as they already run established and successful venues they can easily upgrade. However, industry heavyweights like Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Resorts will do their best to snatch a license for themselves.

The board will choose the winners based on job creation, projected revenue, and their venue’s impact on the surrounding area. Times Square, Coney Island, Hudson Yards, and Willets Point are just some of the proposed locations for new casinos. Despite the lack of a concrete timeframe, the process should complete sometime in 2023. The beginning of February marks the first round of talks with potential bidders.

Addabbo Discussed the Benefits of Regulated Gaming

The three new licenses would likely not have been possible without the continued patronage of Sen. Joseph Addabbo. A long-time proponent of regulated gaming and chairman of the Committee on Racing, Gaming, and Wagering, he has been instrumental in shaping the state’s stance on gambling. Addabbo discussed the licenses in a recent interview for Spectrum News, sharing his opinion on their myriad benefits.

New York stands to gain much by the revenue of these licenses, their activity going forward, and the thousands of new jobs.

Sen. Joseph Addabbo

The senator noted that the three new casinos would significantly contribute towards educational funding. He added that introducing more regulated high-profile venues would help reduce problem gambling, hopefully redirecting people away from unsafe alternatives and traveling to other states. Addabbo’s next project involves introducing legalized iGaming in New York by the end of 2023, hoping to create a healthy and safe market benefiting local communities.

Cómo Establecer Propósitos Duradedors Para el 2023

Preventing the Link Between Crime & Problem Gambling

Joel Smith Wins Second FPN National Championship at Chasin’ Bracelets

Joel Smith Wins Second FPN National Championship at Chasin' Bracelets

The Free Poker Network Chasin’ Bracelets National Championship has come to an end and Joel Smith has claimed the FPN bracelet and a $11,500 Main Event prize package. This is Smith’s second FPN National Championship after he first claimed victory in 2015.

Smith outlasted a field of 225 qualifiers to emerge victorious after he defeated Greg Larson in heads-up play. He caps off a brilliant weekend that saw a deep run to fourth place in the Tag Team Championship with his wife, Nikki.

Larson and the rest of the top-20 finishers took home $1,500. Brett Zimmerman finished in third, while Lester Hauglid and Brad Craig rounded out the top five.

“It’s surreal. I don’t really know what to say,” Smith said in his post-win interview with PokerNews.

Smith was down early at the final table, but he’s been in spots like this before. Smith fought back from a 3:1 deficit in heads-up play to take the lead with a better kicker after players flopped the top pair.

“I didn’t give up. You just never know. Any hand can be the one that turns things around and makes things go your way.”

Smith attends the WSOP regularly, but the $11,500 Main Event package will make this one unique.

“We usually play the other events every Summer, like the Colossus and other small buy-ins. This will be very special.”

2023 FPN Chasin’ Bracelets National Championship Final Table Results

Rank Name Home State Prize
1 Joel Smith Minnesota $11,500
2 Greg Larson Minnesota $1,500
3 Brett Zimmerman Illinois $1,500
4 Lester Hauglid Minnesota $1,500
5 Brad Craig North Dakota $1,500
6 Kevin Spain Illinois $1,500
7 David Kalet Nebraska $1,500
8 Craig Ashley Illinois $1,500
9 Ed Cavaciuti Delaware $1,500

Players came from all over the country after winning their seats in local and online tournaments, as well as through instant win opportunities and other drawings. Those that did not qualify throughout the year still had the chance to come to Las Vegas to play in four different qualifiers that were offered throughout the weekend.

Among those that found their way to the winner’s circle but couldn’t make it to the final table are Ken Beach, Al Reese, Boyd Brandsrud, Lori Salmon, Larry Sundberg, Andy Lagarge, Nels Peterson, John Aduana, Maya Cuccaro, Adam Sabatka, and Russ Neil.

Final Table Action

Zimmerman came into the final table with the only stack over 1,000,000, and Larson was not far behind in second. The first to go was Ed Cavaciuti in ninth place when he got it all in with two callers, but David Kalet beat him with a pair of pocket kings.

Soon after, Craig Ashley hit the rail when he got it in with the best hand, but the board brought a full house for Larson and Ashley was out in eighth. On the very next hand, it was Kalet who got it in with ace-jack against Smith’s suited ace-eighth, but Smith spiked an eight on the river to send Kalet home in seventh place.

Kevin Spain came back from a short break and shoved with a pair of pocket tens. The two callers checked it down to the end, but Larson made a pair of kings to eliminate him in sixth place.

Five-handed play stretched out as players jockeyed for position down the stretch. After nearly two levels without an elimination, but Craig broke the stalemate when he shoved with a suited nine-seven, but Larson took him out in fifth place with queen-ten.

Hauglid was out in fourth place as the blinds escalated rapidly. He got it in with a suited ace-five, but Larson was there once again to score the knockout with Big Slick.

Greg Larson

Three-handed play lasted a matter of moments before Zimmerman was committed to the pot with his small stack. Smith flopped a flush to take him out and bring the tournament to heads-up play.

Larson had a big lead going into heads-up play with over 3,000,000 chips to Smith’s sub-million stack, but Smith went on the comeback trail quickly and retook the lead with the better kicker after both players flopped a pair.
Smith didn’t look back after he took the lead and the big moment came when Larson shoved with mid-pair and Smith eliminated him with the top pair of queens.

Bin Weng Conquers Home Casino to Win Borgata’s $5,300 The Return for $1 Million!

Bin Weng Conquers Home Casino to Win Borgata's $5,300 The Return for $1 Million!

The final day of $5,300 The Return at The Borgata in Atlantic City ended on Sunday night. The overwhelmingly successful event smashed the $3 million guarantee with a prize pool that reached $5,538,700 thanks to a massive turnout of 1,142 entries. The exciting final table of action saw the final eight play down to a winner in about seven hours of play.

Coming out on top as the winner of the $1,000,000 grand prize was prolific player Bin Weng, who quintupled his previous biggest score and moved his career tournament earnings close to $3 million according to the Hendon Mob.

Weng has been playing many events over the past two years and accumulating many results, but it has not been all smooth sailing for Weng recently.

“To be honest, right now I am happy for sure but I don’t know why I am just not excited at all. I just feel like I was supposed to get this one because for the past six or seven months it was the worst downswing I have ever suffered,” he explained afterward, indicating that this result was very important to him. “I took a whole month’s break in December. I skipped the WPT Wynn Series and tried to figure out what my leaks were. So winning this one means a lot to me and hope this heater can continue.”

$5,300 The Return Final Table Results

The Return Borgata Official Final Table
The Return Borgata Official Final Table

The Philadelphia native also discussed how special it was for him to win specifically in Atlantic City at the Borgata.

“I used to play here a lot. Cash games, tournaments, casino games, I lost a lot of money here,” he said with a chuckle. “I love the Borgata! Borgata is my favorite and my wife’s favorite. She will occasionally travel with me for poker but this stop is her favorite.”

Weng is known for his wide-hand selection, high variance, and exciting style of play as he is often putting his chips to work and putting his opponents under pressure. And he would do just that for much of this tournament, including a key hand where he gained his big chip lead back late on Day 2 when he called a turn-bet with a naked pair of fours and would be rewarded with a set on the river to crack aces.

At the final table, that high variance would continue as he explained some of his strategies going in.

“I am playing for the trophy, I play for the win. If you watch the stream, you will see that I take a lot of risk on high-variance lines because I just want to win, to be honest. I also wanted to avoid big pots with Joe McKeehen (chip leader to start the day). I really didn’t think that detailed on strategy though, I just pretend I go to a normal tournament and play my best. Try not to make mistakes.”

Action of the Day

The day began with eight and would remain eight-handed for a decent amount of time before Sam Laskowitz, who days earlier won the $2,200 Mystery Bounty event for $146,609, was the first one to go, and it denied him the chance for two victories during the series. Christopher Ng was the next to go in seventh place not long after, securing by far his largest result by more than 10 times.

Local player Lanny Vaysman went out in sixth as he made his mark on the tournament with his talkative style of play. Justin Saliba and Jonathan Borenstein finished in fifth and fourth place respectively after neither one of them were able to get much going during the final table.

The story entering the day was 2015 WSOP Main Event champ McKeehen as he began with a huge chip lead. For much of the early part of the day, it appeared as though McKeehen was going to run over the final table and cruise to a victory. But that all changed three-handed, starting when he lost a big flip to Weng when his jacks were shredded by ace-king. After that, his luck got worse as he was done in by an unlikely river twice in a row to go out in third place.

Joe McKeehen
Joe McKeehen

Sundiata Devore began the final table as the second-shortest stack but he would steadily climb up into the middle and then make his move three-handed as he amassed chips to enter heads-up play with a near-even stack with Weng and the two players agreed to make the payouts more even. However, he would ultimately succumb as he was chipped away over the course of about an hour of heads-up play to finish as the runner-up.

That concludes the PokerNews coverage of The Return – A Borgata Championship event. Be sure to join the PokerNews team for live coverage of all of your favorite tournaments around the world in 2023.

VICI Properties Acquired Four PURE Casinos to Enter Canada

VICI Properties Acquired Four PURE Casinos to Enter Canada

A leaseback transaction between VICI Properties and Pure Canadian Gaming Group saw the real estate investment trust (REIT) acquire four gaming properties in Canada.

Sale-Leaseback Model

VICI Properties announced it has acquired the real estate assets of four PURE Casinos in Alberta – PURE Casino Edmonton in Edmonton, PURE Casino Yellowhead in Edmonton, PURE Casino Calgary in Calgary, and PURE Casino Lethbridge in Lethbridge – from PURE Canadian Group, for an aggregate price of C$271.9 million ($200.8 million).

Commenting on the announcement, John Payne, president and chief operating officer of VICI Properties, outlined the development as “another momentous first” for the experiential real estate investment trust that has been building its portfolio of market-leading properties over the last five-and-a-half years.

The acquisition of PURE Casino’s property portfolio expanded VICI Properties’ international footprint into Canada and Payne believes that the transaction highlighted VICI’s “ability to source, structure, and fund cross-border transactions” in pursuit of new opportunities to deliver growth for the business.

“We are pleased to add PURE as our eleventh tenant and look forward to a mutually beneficial partnership,” Payne concluded.

Cash and Credit from Revolver

The transaction was financed in a combination of available cash and credit available under the REIT’s existing revolving credit facility in Canadian dollars. Upon transaction close, VICI executed a triple-net master lease agreement with PURE Canadian Gaming covering all four properties.

Guaranteed by the parent entity, the PURE Master Lease stipulates that VICI Properties is entitled to an annual rent of approximately C$21.8 million ($16.1 million) for an initial term of 25 years, with four 5-year tenant renewal options. The rent represents an implied acquisition capitalization rate of 8%.

The four PURE casinos are the latest to become part of VICI Properties’ real estate portfolio, after the acquisition of the real estate assets of two casinos in Mississippi in December.

VICI Properties purchased the real estate assets of Fitz Casino & Hotel and WaterView Casino & Hotel from Foundation Gaming & Entertainment in a sale-leaseback deal for a cash consideration of $293.4 million and simultaneously agreed to a triple-net master lease under which it will receive $24.25 million a year for an initial term of 15 years with four 5-year renewal options.

Also last month, VICI Properties announced plans to use its Partner Property Growth Fund and finance an expansion project for Century Casinos in Missouri, funding a new land-based casino at Century Casino Caruthersville, in Caruthersville, Missouri, and a 38-room hotel tower.

Poker Backer ‘Mattress Mack’ Bets $3M on Underdog TCU to Win College Football Championship

Poker Backer 'Mattress Mack' Bets $3M on Underdog TCU to Win College Football Championship

Houston billionaire furniture store owner Jim McIngvale, more commonly known as “Mattress Mack,” is once again putting his money where his mouth is on a Texas sports team.

The founder of the Gallery Furniture retail chain has wagers exceeding $3 million on the heavy underdog Texas (TCU) Horned Frogs in Monday night’s College Football Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs, the defending champs.

Mattress Mack, who backed a group of Houston-area poker players this past summer at the 2022 World Series of Poker, has a penchant for making massive sports bets.

This past fall, he won a sports betting record $72 million when his beloved Houston Astros won baseball’s World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Man with a Plan

mattress mack college football

There’s a method to McIngvale’s madness. He isn’t just a degenerate gambler with too much money to spend. Instead, he’s a brilliant salesman who uses these highly publicized sports wagers to promote his business.

In the $10 million to win $72 million World Series wager, he offered a win-win promotion to his customers. When the Astros won, he refunded the thousands of customers that spent over $3,000 on mattresses during the promotional period. And if the Phillies were to have won, well, Gallery Furniture would have received thousands of new customers.

Mattress Mack’s wager on TCU, which is spread across multiple sportsbooks including Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, and WynnBet, also comes with a similar promotion, which he explained in the following video:

Customers purchasing a $3,000 or higher Temper, Pedic Sealy Posturepedic, Stearns Foster mattress will receive a full refund doubled if TCU wins.

You might be wondering how it’s a wise business move to pay the customer’s back double their investment. It’s simple — he wagered $3 million on the game and stands to receive an $8 million payout if TCU pulls off the upset.

Sports Betting for Beginners: What Is Over/Under?

Can TCU Actually Win the Game?

If TCU loses, Mattress Mack will likely win even though his sports bets will be lost. That’s because he stands to gain thousands of new mattress sales due to the promotion.

The Horned Frogs have been college football’s biggest surprise story of 2022, going 12-0 in the regular season one year after finishing 5-7. They followed up the unbeaten record with a victory over Kansas State in the Big-12 Championship game last month, and then an upset over Big Ten champion Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl, the College Football Playoff semifinals.

On Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the Cinderella story could come to a fairy-tale ending with a win over the heavily favored (-13) Georgia Bulldogs.

Georgia, the SEC conference champions, are 14-0 overall like TCU. They have a steady quarterback — Stetson Bennett — who has experience playing in and winning the championship game (2021), and one of the most physical and athletic defenses in the country. The Bulldogs can put up numbers offensively and shut down a high-powered offense on the other side of the ball.

Not only that, but they escaped a marginally tough schedule unscathed. TCU, on the other hand, competed in an objectively weak Big-12 conference, and had no quality out-of-conference wins until the bowl game against Michigan.

But they’ve played underdog all year, and they’re still unbeaten, one win away from being crowned national champions. Few gave TCU a shot against Michigan, and virtually no one before the season predicted the Horned Frogs would even compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff. So, there’s at least a puncher’s chance that Mattress Mack’s wager will come through.

Quarterback Max Duggan, a surprise Heisman Trophy finalist, has been silencing critics all year. Who is to say he, and the Horned Frogs, won’t do it one last time on Monday?

That said, Georgia covering the 13-point spread is the most likely outcome. That’s our prediction and we’re sticking to it.

UK’s Lottery-Next Operator Allwyn Appoints Kerry Parkin

Allwyn Enters the US Market via Camelot LS Group Acquisition

Global lottery group Allwyn continued with its preparations to assume management of the UK National Lottery by expanding its senior team with the appointment of Kerry Parkin as Global Communications Director.

Parkin announced her new role via LinkedIn, excited to join Allwyn and its team during times of global expansion and growth, hailing the group’s “phenomenal potential.”

“I am delighted to announce that I join Allwyn today as their new Global Communications Director,” Parkin stated in her profile on the network, eager to become part of “the extraordinary Allwyn story” and help the group fulfill its huge potential as a global lottery operator.

“With a presence in six countries, and the bid winner for the fourth license for the National Lottery in the UK, it’s such an exciting time to join,” Parkin continued in her comments, anticipating “a phenomenal year ahead for Allwyn” and feeling impatient “to get started.”

Parkin is moving to Allwyn after two years of service as Global Communications Director for Australian-based Buy Now, Pay Later company Zip Co, where she was spearheading the development and execution of the company’s communications and public affairs strategy, working with teams across Australia and the UK.

Her professional career also features roles as Communications and CSR Director for UK’s favorite coffee shop chain, Costa Coffee, and as Managing Director of global consultancy and advisory firm Teneo for its UK office, managing communications with Facebook’s EMEA division and WhatsApp.

Allwyn Expanded on Both Sides of the Atlantic

Last month, Allwyn reached an agreement with Ontario Teacher’s Plan for the acquisition of Camelot Lottery Solutions group of companies for an undisclosed fee and thus enter the lottery market in the US via the Chicago-based group and its agreements with two state lotteries, the Illinois Lottery and the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery.

Camelot LS Group has long-term agreements to operate the Illinois Lottery as a private manager and with the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery to enhance the lottery’s operations and the acquisition presented Allwyn with an opportunity to execute the next step of its global expansion strategy.

The sale agreement for Camelot LS Group followed shortly after Allwyn and the Ontario Teacher’s Plan agreed on the acquisition of Camelot UK, the parent behind Camelot LS Group.

The acquisition of Camelot UK was announced after it became clear that Allwyn would be the next UK National Lottery operator following the decision by Camelot UK to withdraw from pursuing legal action against the Gambling Commission and finally allow the national regulator to award the fourth UK National Lottery license the winner.
