Breakout Poker Star Angela Jordison Is a GPI Double-Bridesmaid as Cherish Andrews and Stephen Song Crush December

Angela Jordison

A race to the finish

Angela Jordison was a revelation last year. The Oregonian ended 2021 with a flourish and came into 2022 with a fire in her belly. On the cusp of a famous double, in November she was atop the Global Poker Index (GPI) rankings for both Mid-Major and Female Player of the Year. Despite posting some big results in December, however, her kick finish was no match for those of the exceptional Cherish Andrews and Stephen Song.

$470,000 in prize money and almost 1,000 GPI points to snatch victory from Jordison

An extraordinary trio of side event results for Andrews at the WPT World Poker Championship at Wynn Las Vegas propelled her into top spot. In the space of just five days, she came in sixth in the $3,000 event, second in the $10,000 High Roller, and first in the very last $1,100 event for a combined $470,000 in prize money and almost 1,000 GPI points to snatch victory from Jordison. Unsurprisingly, she also picked up the WPT Player of the Festival title.

Song had an equally remarkable December and he needed it to clinch not one but two GPI leaderboards. In the WPT Prime Championship, he outlasted 5,429 other players, defeating the impressive Lara Eisenberg heads-up to win $712,650, the lion’s share of the whopping $5,267,100 prize pool. The 422 GPI points Song accrued from that result were enough to put him just above Jordison at the top of the Mid-Major leaderboard and Adam Hendrix at the top of the overall Player of the Year Standings.

All guns blazing

An Omaha cash game grinder, Jordison originally learned poker from her father, flying under the radar for much of her poker career. That would change in 2015, when she made headlines at the Spring Poker Round Up in Oregon when she completed an unlikely three-peat, winning the first three events of the festival.

Cut to late 2021 and Jordison took down a Venetian Deepstack, following it up with a fifth place finish in the MSPT Minnesota for a then-career best $48,444. Those results whet her appetite for tournaments, and she went into 2022 all guns blazing.

suddenly put her in the mix in both the GPI Mid-Major and Female Player of the Year rankings

It was a somewhat slow start to the year with a bunch of min-cashes, but a big Las Vegas campaign in June and July culminated in six WSOP cashes and three other scores, including a third-place finish in Event #18, $1,000 No Limit Hold’em, and a Day 5 deep run 175th-place finish in the Main Event. Jordison immediately followed that up with a fifth-place finish in MSPT Iowa, a result which suddenly put her in the mix in both the GPI Mid-Major and Female Player of the Year rankings.

Three more final tables came in August with a third-place result in the WSOP Circuit (WSOPC) Harrah’s Cherokee Main Event, a sixth-place finish in the WSOPC Harrah’s Cherokee High Roller, and then a side event win in the WPT Legends of Poker in Los Angeles. Five more cashes came in September and October, but then she had another big result in November at the WSOPC Choctaw Durant, finishing fourth in the Main Event for a new career best $96,595.

A long December

The heater was real and Jordison found herself going into December on defense, enjoying a lead on both leaderboards, but fending off challenges from a chasing pack all playing a jam-packed December schedule. In the end, the last-ditch heroics from Andrews and Song proved too much to withstand and they passed her on each leaderboard during the WPT World Championships.

Andrews was now out of reach, but Jordison had one shot to pull off an unlikely post-Christmas buzzer-beater for the Mid-Major crown. 643 players took their seats at the MSPT Venetian and only a top-two finish would garner enough points to pip Song.

Extraordinarily, with her back to the wall, Jordison made the final table. With seven left, her pocket kings did a huge hold versus Richard Alati and for a moment it seemed like it could be a fairytale story. Sadly, it wasn’t to be as she crashed out in fifth position for $31,355 and 204 GPI points, 41 fewer than required to overtake Song.

The winner does not take it all

Speaking exclusively to VegasSlotsOnline News, Jordison reflected on the year that was:

“I began 2022 as a cash game player. I ended it flying from stop to stop, grinding tournaments, fighting for player of the year. I pushed myself more than I ever thought possible. I came up short on some goals but soared past others,” she said.

I didn’t think I had it in me to compete at that level, but I surprised myself”

“With every deep run I felt more confident,” Jordison added. “There were times when I laughed and times when I cried. My family supported me 100% and my friends rallied in my corner, pushing me every step of the way. I didn’t think I had it in me to compete at that level, but I surprised myself and I can’t wait for 2023!”

Unlike in other endeavors, in poker, the winner does not take it all. There is plenty of prize money to go around and while Jordison may feel like she came up short on some goals, she still had a marquee year which nobody can take away from her. She cashed 29 times on the live circuit for almost $600,000, tripling her lifetime tournament earnings.

When it comes to leaderboards, however, it is normally only the winner that gets remembered. Andrews and Song both did something very special to win the Female and Mid-Major leaderboards, respectively. Song’s accomplishment was so great, in fact, that it earned him that most coveted prize, the GPI Player of the Year, normally reserved for the highest of high rollers.

Apt recognition

According to the GPI, both Andrews and Song will be invited to accept their trophies at the Global Poker Awards ceremony at the PokerGO Studio at ARIA in Las Vegas – broadcast exclusively on PokerGO. There will be much fanfare for those two players in the coming weeks and rightly so. They are two of the game’s most luminous rising stars.

I would suggest, however, that when it comes to the 2022 GPI Breakout Player Award, it is double-bridesmaid Jordison who should find herself in the winner’s circle. Once in a while, great poker ambassadors emerge, and she is one of them. Her wit, her tenacity, her warmth and her infectious enthusiasm for the game beguiles everyone she meets. She represents the best of us and such an honor would be apt recognition of a most conspicuous and eye-catching year on the live felt.

It also feels apt to give Jordison the final word:

“2022 was a whirlwind. I learned so much about myself and the game this last year. I am very grateful for the experiences. I love poker and the poker community and I’m proud to be a part of it. I think I made my dad proud.”

Esportes da Sorte Inks Historic Sponsorship Deal with Brazil’s Goiás Esporte

Esportes da Sorte Inks Historic Sponsorship Deal with Brazil’s Goiás Esporte

To date, this is the most important sponsorship agreement in the team’s history. It will cover the 2023 season and will allow the 2018-based betting operator considered one of the most reliable and stable companies in the industry to have its brand elements appear on the club’s equipment. What else will the new deal bring to the two parties? Let’s find out!

The company that called 2023 “the year of the people” and expressed its eagerness to go “all over the future” will also enjoy additional exposure on interview backdrops as part of the terms of the agreement. At the same time, Esportes da Sorte will be present on the soccer club’s official social media channels while collaborating with the club on a number of special activations that will be revealed during 2023.

Goiás Esporte Clube’s marketing director Tiago Pinheiro spoke about the reconstruction efforts that have been put into the club since 2021, mentioning the “important results” produced by their work. Pinheiro added that the Goiás brand managed to regain its prestige and prove its value once more, making it more desirable and eligible for greater sponsorship deals.

Pinhero also explained that by welcoming Esportes da Sortes to its roster of partners, the club will be crowning its journey while opening a fresh and “historic” chapter. The new partnership with Esportes da Sorte will help the soccer club benefit from the financial support it needs to grow throughout the year.

The Operator Is Expanding Its Activities in Sports and Entertainment

Esportes da Sorte’s chief executive Darwin Filho explained that the company was ready to expand its activities and reach new verticals like sports and entertainment. Filho called Goiás a “traditional club” that owns a “strong, recognized brand” while describing its supporters as passionate, further arguing why the new partnership was inked.

Goiás Esporte Clube’s took it to Twitter to speak about Esportes da Sortes’ proposition based on bringing accessible, diverse, and quality entertainment to the largest number of people, calling the operator “the largest sports betting site in Brazil”.

The Brazilian sports club is popular for its association soccer team based in Goiânia, which is the capital city of the Goiás state. The team won Brazilian’s second tier Série B two times and its record also includes 28 Campeonato Goiano and three Copa Centro-Oeste titles. The team has been a constant presence in the premiere Brazilian league Série A and it has also been promoted to Latin America’s Copa Libertadores twice and South America’s Copa Sudamericana six times.

The gambling and sports betting markets in the country were supposed to be given the green light with sports betting available in time for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, the latest changes in Brazil’s politics led to a new dial-down of the process.

Kentucky Sends Online Betting, Poker, and Fantasy Sports Bill to Senate House

Kentucky Sends Online Betting, Poker, and Fantasy Sports Bill to Senate House

House Bill 106 was introduced in the current legislative session on January 5. The bill received support from Kentucky State Representative in Lexington’s 88th District, Cherlynn Stevenson, Newport’s State Representative Rachel Roberts, and Derrick Graham, a dedicated House Representative since 2003.

The Bill Could Bring 26 New Amendments

If it would be given the green light, the new bill would introduce 26 new amendments to the current legislation. It would also enact 13 fresh sections in relation to poker, online sports, poker, and betting on fantasy sports. As a result, operators would be able to provide sports betting offerings on their online platforms.

At the same time, licensed racing tracks would be allowed to work together with online brands. A single track would only be allowed to partner with one online operator. Together, they would generate betting systems dedicated to tracking wagering and online betting. Racing tracks could also provide sportsbooks at two distinct locations owned or leased at a distance of up to 60 miles from the racing grounds. This condition would only apply provided the locations would not be directly tied to the track’s land.

$500,000 Licensing Application Fee

Operators interested in offering sports betting services for sports like NASCAR, the NBA, the NFL, the MLB, or the PGA to name a few would need to cover a $500,000 license application fee. The operators would also need to cover a yearly license renewal fee set at $50,000.

According to the new bill, race tracks would also need to pay a 9.75% revenue tax every month, and a revenue tax of 14.25% on all online sports bets. Players, referees, coaches, and their close family members would be completely forbidden to place bets on sports in Kentucky.

Gambling Operators Would Pay a $250,000 License Fee

Operators looking to embrace online Poker and fantasy sports bets would have to show proof of using efficient geotracking software. The software would be used to make sure that all online pokers are located inside the state. Another requirement refers to operators proving they can verify the ages of all players in an attempt to prevent underaged players under 18 from wagering.

Operators would also need to cover a $250,000 license fee along with a yearly license renewal fee set at $10,000. As for revenue taxes, a 6.75% monthly tax on all fees charged to players, rake included, would be introduced by the new bill.

Only sports fantasy operators with over 100 participants would be required to obtain a license for a $5000 application fee. Licensed operators would also java to cover a renewal fee set at 6% of the operators’ revenue from the previous year or $5000, depending on which amount would be greater. Online fantasy sports platforms would not be subject to any set of restrictions.

However, holders of licenses for fantasy sports competitions will have to submit yearly records to public certified accountants to make sure they are complying with the legislation. Last March, House Bill 606 received the green light in the Senate House but did not do as well in the Senate Committee.

SoftGamings Inks API Content Integration Deal with Betsolutions

SoftGamings Inks API Content Integration Deal with Betsolutions

The popular turnkey and casino platform developer will incorporate the aspiring casino software development company’s iconic titles using its unified application programming interface (API) system. The deal also includes the iconic Zeppelin game, one of Betsolutions’ greatest hits thanks to unique “crash” game mechanics and multiplayer features.

The New Deal Paves the Way for Additional Provably Fair Games

Other blockchain-powered games from Betsolutions have been this way given the green light to become available for similar integration with API. Provably fair is the algorithm that relies on technologies that enable online randomization for stepping up and reaching new levels of fairness and transparency.

It uses the perks of blockchain technology to complete randomization activities including the shuffling of card decks, coin flipping, or dice throwing. The process can be verified by all players engaged in a certain provably fair game.

Betsolutions’ co-founder Guram Rukhadze  explained the new agreement would enable their games to reach “thousands of players across CIS, Asian and European markets”, which was the company’s current goal.

Looking to set the foundation for powerful connections on the market while building a name “that will echo for years to come”, Betsolutions found it necessary to associate with “the best gaming distributors”. SoftGamings was on the list, according to Rukhadze, hence their decision to come together.

At the end of 2022, SoftGamings, the company that describes itself as “the world’s most innovative developers of gaming platforms and supplier of robust, turnkey gaming systems” made it on the prestigious shortlist of nominees for the Platform Provider of the Year Award during the Global Gaming Awards. The event will be held on February 6 in London.

SoftGamings Aims to Keep Its Offer “Fresh”

The company’s director of partnerships Anna Lalina explained how important it is to continuously attract new game providers in an attempt to maintain it “fresh and appealing” for operators and players. Lalina further explained that the decision to sign with companies like Betsolutions was “a step in the right direction”. Its current roster of clients features more than 80 reputable casino brands known all over the planet.

To date, the company that has the “Build Your Own Casino” logo has worked on developing its own bonus, loyalty program, and dedicated tournament system. Last November, the company received regulatory approval from the gambling commission in Romania that would allow it to launch its casino and sports betting offerings in the country.

OCCC Slapped DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM with $150K Fines

OCCC Slapped DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM with $150K Fines

The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) slapped three sportsbooks with a $150,000 fine each for violating the advertising rules related to sports gambling to send a clear message to the industry that it needs to abide by the rules.

Compliance to Be Enforced

The state’s regulator took administrative action against BetMGM Sportsbook, Caesars Sportbook and DraftKIngs Sportsbook after all three failed to incorporate in their advertising a message about problem gambling, while also advertising their products as free, reported media outlet Cleveland.

Matt Schuler, executive director of the OCCC, outlined that the administrative action is the commission’s response to the disregard shown by these sports betting operators for the sports betting law in Ohio, despite having received “multiple reminders of the rules and standards for advertising and promotions.”

At the end of last month, the OCCC warned all sports betting operators to abide by the rules of their licenses, prompting them to make sure their advertising is compliant with the advertising rules, yet these three sportsbooks violated the rules after the warning.

“These repeated violations leave the commission no choice but to pursue administrative action to bring operators into compliance,” continued Schuler, stating that “the commission takes responsible gambling seriously – and expects the industry to value the same.”

A second warning for all sports betting operators to be strict about the gambling advertising rules was aired by Gov. Mike DeWine following the state’s official market launch on January 1. DeWine told them that their actions are being closely watched not only by the OCCC but by himself so they should know that crossing the line would not be tolerated.

According to the OCCC, sports betting advertisements should deliver a clear message aimed at protecting the public from problem gambling and contain a phone number that can be called for resources.

‘Free’ and ‘Risk-Free’ Bets

As for the “free” or “risk-free” bets, the regulator is adamant that these words should not be used in advertisements when people have to risk their own money to take advantage of such offers.

The sanctioned operators will be provided with a chance for a hearing on the $150,000 fines but for one of them, DraftKings, the transgression is not the first, as the Boston-based company may be subjected to a $350,000 fine for breaching the state’s advertising rules.

The OCCC claimed DraftKings violated the rule not to advertise its products to people under 21 when it sent advertising messages to around 2,500 recipients from the age group as part of its pre-launch campaign.

Besides DraftKings, Barstool Sportsbook was issued with a notice of violation and slapped with a $250,000 fine for violating the rule not to advertise to people under 21. Penn’s sports betting brand was found in breach of the rule while delivering its College Football Show at the University of Toledo’s campus, talking openly about gambling in front of 700 students.

The Biggest Slot Machine Myths and Why They are Wrong!

The Biggest Slot Machine Myths and Why They are Wrong!

by Joshua O’Connell

Because of the nature of casinos and gambling, which has a lot of things kept out of direct public view, people love to ascribe various ideas and, frankly, myths to casinos, slot machines and more. Many of these myths make people feel like casinos are an even worse bet than they are, oftentimes to make people feel better about the fact that they lost to the house.

In this article we’ll cover common misconceptions about casinos and slot machines, and what the reality is for each.

Casinos Change Slot Machine Paybacks Based on Time of Day, or Day of the Week

It’s not as easy to change the payback on a machine as many players think. Players assume because slots are effectively modern computers, that some guy in a room somewhere on the casino property can update the paybacks on all the machines instantly. The reality is much more complicated.

For one, many slot machines aren’t designed to support this, even today. Second, regulations in many states require a much more complex process. For instance, in Nevada, a machine must sit idle for a period of time, with no credits in the machine. Then it will have to go down to reboot and verify everything is settled. Then it has to be idle for a few minutes again.

Players would notice this happening, and in today’s world of share everything on social media, you’d better expect to see plenty of examples of whole groups machines going down for a reboot all at the same time if casinos were doing this.

You Have a Better Chance of Winning When There Are More People in the Casino

Your individual odds don’t change because there are more players in the casino, but there will numerically be more people winning at any given time, simply because there are more people in the casino.

Say if there’s 100 people in the casino, and 40 are winning. Shift that to 500 people, and 200 could be winning, but the ratio is still roughly the same. The casinos don’t offer a higher payback percentage just because there’s more people in the building – that percentage is already locked in regardless of who and how many are playing.

Using a Players Card Reduces Your Overall Payback

Players card systems, while installed into slot machines, do not have direct control over a slot machine. They largely read data, and in the instance of free play, can put a credit on the machine, but that’s about it. So playing with or without a players card will not have any impact on the machine’s payback.

However, using a player’s card is the only way you can guarantee you get the earned casino comps and offers that come with gambling in any casino. So in that sense playing without a card costs you, not the other way around.

New Slot Machines Have a Honeymoon Period to Get Players Hooked

Actually, new slot machines will oftentimes pay a bit lower than they eventually will.

First off though, as we discussed earlier, casinos rarely touch the payout percentages of a machine once installed. So the odds of them setting a new game higher to start is unlikely; a good chunk of gamblers love to try out the new games, so they don’t need to incentivize players to play them anyway.

However, games with progressives will take time to reach their overall payback percentage, and that’s because the progressives need time to build up.

If you play a new game that has a $10,000 grand, and hit it that first day, that grand won’t be far off the $10,000 mark. But if it hasn’t hit for weeks, that $10,000 might be $12,000 or $15,000, and that has an appreciable difference on the payback of slots.

I’ve reviewed the paybacks of a number of casinos from the time they’ve opened to a year later, and oftentimes the first couple of months the casino pays back as much as 1-2 percent lower than ultimately where it evens out, just showing you that new machines need time to build up their top prizes before they can achieve their average payback percentages.

Never Leave a Hot Machine; Run From a Cold Machine

The concept of a “hot” or “cold” machine (or a “loose” or “tight” machine for that matter) is an evaluation of how a machine has done recently. That is not a predictor of what will happen on the next spin, as because of the random number generator (RNG) operates, any outcome is possible on the next spin.

If you hit a jackpot, the chances of hitting a jackpot on the next spin is still the same as it was on the last spin. That’s because the random number generator makes any outcome of the game equally possible on each and every spin. The game doesn’t deviate from its path because as hundreds of thousands or millions of spins are performed on the game, the more and more likely the game will arrive at its expected payout percentage.

If a Bag, Pot, Fireworks is Full/Bursting, A Bonus is Due to Hit

Many games nowadays have one or more accumulators, which is a visual indicator that evolves with play, showing a progression. However, it’s what the industry calls a perceived persistence, some element that’s growing in value that actually has no specific value at all.

That’s because, like a “hot” or “cold” machine, it’s an indicator of what has happened, not what will happen. The visual is telling you that it’s been awhile since a bonus, not that a bonus is approaching.

There are games that have “must hit by” elements or other scenarios that are indeed indicating that a bonus is approaching as it reaches the upper end, but those will clearly be labeled when that’s the case. Otherwise, it’s all for show, in the hopes you’ll fall into its trap and play because those coins are overflowing.

Machine Paybacks Differ if You Use Cash, a Ticket or Free Play

The machine’s payback will be consistent regardless of the way the money got deposited. The machine will keep track of basic things for accounting purposes, but there aren’t multiple payback settings for a casino to choose from – it’s one choice that governs all the play that the machine has, regardless of what got deposited in the machine.

In a different era, some casinos would have specific machines that you could use free play on. I’m sure those machines were set lower because they were purposefully in place for that one specific reason, but nowadays free play is allowed on many machines, oftentimes the ones without big jackpots, but otherwise machines you can play with cash or free play on the casino floor.

Similarly, tickets are simply a record-keeping device, not unlike chips for table games, that avoid constant cash being passed in and out of the machine. The ticket system also allowed casinos to finally move away from heavy and expensive coin management at each machine, and opened up the door for more denominations, including penny denomination slots. They are as good as cash and treated as such by slot machines.

If You Don’t Know the Payback (At Tribal Casinos, On Cruise Ships), They Will Be a Lot Lower

Many players have a fear of the unknown. Some states and casinos report their slot machine payback statistics, while others (generally tribal casinos and cruise ships) are not required to do so. Some players presume if casinos aren’t required to report their paybacks, they’ll set them extremely low, much lower than commercial casinos. This is wrong for a few reasons.

Slot Makers Set the Paybacks

Casinos choose which machines to put on their floor, but ultimately they’re buying from games developed by slot makers, and those machines have a range of paybacks on offer. If a casino wants a game that pays below what a given machine will offer, they won’t offer the game, but as a general rule the games seen in tribal casinos and commercial casinos come from the same group of providers, with the same options available.

Slot makers would prefer to offer better paybacks, given their choice! I’ve spoken to multiple developers who look for ways to tweak the knobs to give the players just a little more back within the parameters on offer. Ultimately the range has to be attractive enough to casino operators while still making the games fun, which leads to…

If a Game Paid Really Low, We Would Notice

There’s a point where it becomes very difficult to make the game exciting for many players while extracting a very high payback percentage from players. Already even with the paybacks on offer, some players hate the really volatile games that make it hard to get wins; now imagine the wins you did get were even lower to accommodate those lower paybacks.

Game makers want to make sure wherever you see a specific game, it will play right, and that means there needs to be a floor so the game still feels like the game. If a player has a series of bad experiences on a game, whether not winning or whatnot, they may avoid the game in the future wherever it is, and with enough players doing that the makers will find their games not as sought out by either players or casinos.

Where The Lower Paybacks Can Occur

It’s fair to assume given a range of paybacks, cruise ships will opt for the lowest option. I’ve seen many examples of this from machines being set up on cruise ships. You may also find higher denominations of games will pay lower than traditionally on offer in land-based casinos. But you won’t find them lower than what land-based casinos can offer – that floor is there.

Tribal casinos it’s a bit broader, because some are in competition with one another, and usually that means the paybacks have the potential to be higher. Some tribal casinos also don’t offer traditional slot machines, but instead Bingo machines, which work on their own payout schedule (and at least some report to be higher than traditional slots, to overcome the hesitancy some might have about playing Bingo machines).

Ultimately, the fact that they don’t report doesn’t mean they pay any less than any other land-based casino would offer.

Indeed, if you look at new casinos and their paybacks right after opening, the first months tend to be a bit lower and it builds to a more sustained number about a percentage point higher, after a couple of months have passed.

Remember, the odds of winning a progressive is the same whether it’s built up or not, so it will be just as tough to win on day one as day 100, but the prize on day one will be lower because there hasn’t been enough play to build it up yet.

Slots At the End of a Row Pay Better

While many casinos are doing away with rows in some parts of their casinos, an ongoing belief is that you have a better chance of winning on the end. The reality is your chances of winning on slot machines are the same anywhere in the row, but you’ll see more people winning on the end of a row because, simply put, people prefer to sit on the end for space reasons.

If you ever go to a casino that first opened up, you’ll notice the progressives growing more quickly on the end, because more players will choose to sit there and play vs. the inside. And then, as players begin to spot the higher progressives, they’ll likely sit down there, continuing the cycle, until such time as the progressive is won, resetting it.

So, similar to the myth about number of people in the casino, you’re simply more likely to notice people winning on the end of a row because, on average, you’re also more likely to see someone gambling on the end of a row vs. in the middle.

Russian Tech Companies Banned from CES 2023 over Ukraine Invasion

Russian Tech Companies Banned from CES 2023 over Ukraine Invasion

Associated Press reported that the decision is due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has nothing to do with US politics but is in line with the values and policy of the trade group Consumer Technology Association, which is the producer of CES, the largest technological convention in the world.

Only One Russian Company Has Been Affected So Far

According to information from the Consumer Technology Association, 3,000 companies are going to attend this year’s event, which will take place at the Las Vegas Convention center.

Kinsey Fabrizio, senior vice president at the trade group Consumer Technology Association, has noted that among the usual big guns such as Amazon and Meta, there will be a lot of startups taking part. The event is not open to the public, only companies from the industry and media representatives can attend.

This year’s convention will host a wide range of firms that will display their innovative technological developments in the fields of VR, AI, consumer technologies, robotics, and much more.

An Association spokesperson has noted that the decision to not allow Russian companies to exhibit their products this year has affected only one Russian company that requested to be part of the event.

The CES event from last year did not host any Russian companies as no one applied to attend. In 2021, when the event was entirely virtual due to COVID restrictions, four Russian companies participated.

In an earlier interview for the BBC, Consumer Technology Association president and CEO Gary Shapiro called the Russian invasion of Ukraine a “tragic and illegal assault on the people and independent nation of Ukraine”.

In connection with the decision to ban Russian companies from CES 2023 altogether, he said that the Association did not see their attendance as appropriate considering the raging war. Shapiro further elaborated that Ukrainian technological companies are going to attend the event and present their products. He further added that a lot of people across the whole world are trying to support Ukrainians by buying products that Ukrainian companies produce.

Organizers Hope for Pre-Pandemic Attendance Rates

CES 2023 organizer Consumer Technology Association has high hopes that this year’s event will come back to its pre-pandemic glory. The trade group is expecting an attendance of about 100,000 people.

Last year, the convention suffered a 70% decrease in people attending in person as the then-latest COVID variant, the Omicron, had its boom. In 2021, the entire event was held online due to COVID restrictions, and the product presentations and meetings were done through virtual chat rooms and video streams.

In case, CES organizers’ forecast for CES 2023 is fulfilled, the attendance rate will still present a 41% decrease in comparison to the people that were part of the CES 2020, which took place before the pandemic hit.
