When Should You Double Down in Blackjack?

Red blackjack table with cards face up.

Blackjack players find that doubling down is one of the most appealing actions to make because it allows them to double their initial wager and offers the chance to win additional money.

You can use a standard playing strategy to decide whether or not to double down, meaning that blackjack hand value charts often hold the answer.

In this guide, we’ll provide some key details about when expert blackjack players would advise you to double down. You’ll also find some information about when not to make this move.

What Does it Mean to Double Down?

After receiving your initial two cards in blackjack, you have the decision to make about whether you want to double down or not. This means that you can double your stake and maximize your potential returns from a hand. There is a general agreement among professional players about when you should double down in blackjack, and we’ll outline that in this guide.

It’s important to note that if you do decide to double down, you’ll only receive one additional card. You must then stand on that total. Therefore, you don’t want to be doubling down in situations where you may require two extra cards to make a winning hand.

When Should You Double Down?

There are various schools of thought about when you should double down in blackjack. It often differs depending on the variant you are playing and the rules of that strain. We recommend making sure you read the game description carefully, so you know how the dealer acts in any scenario. Then, conduct some background research to find out what the experts say.

The General Strategy

Most would agree that the best time to double down in blackjack is when you have a hard 11 or a 10 with a 9, 10, or 11. Generally speaking, the best situations in which to double down are when you have 11 and the dealer has any card other than an A or 10 when you have 10 and the dealer is showing a card between 2 and 9, or if you have a 9 and the dealer has anything between 3 and 6.

These situations give you a greater probability of winning, meaning that doubling down increases your chances of making a significant return from your stake. Other hands-on which you should double down consistently include hard 8 or hard 9 if the dealer is showing an upcard between 3 and 6.

Differing Rulesets

It’s important to be wary of different rulesets in diverse variants of blackjack, as sometimes doubling down is not an optimal play in these. Indeed, in some blackjack variants, the rules for doubling down may be more favourable to the player. In others, they may be more favourable to the dealer.

For example, in some variants, you are allowed to double down on any initial two-card hand. However, other strains of the game may only allow you to double down under certain conditions such as if your initial two cards total 9, 10, or 11.

When Should You Not Double Down?

While there are some notable times when doubling down is a recommended move, there are also situations when you should avoid this play. You need to be aware of these occasions as well, because otherwise you may be tempted to double down at less-than-optimal times.

You should not double down if you have a hard 12 up to a hard 16 and the dealer has an 8 or higher. Likewise, avoid doubling down if you have a soft 18 unless the dealer has a 9, 10, or ace. Also, it is generally unwise to double down if you have a hard 17 or higher when the dealer has a card between 8 and 10 or an ace.

Genesis Global License Suspended by Malta Gaming Authority

Genesis Global License Suspended by Malta Gaming Authority

The sanction from the gambling regulator in the country was announced Tuesday. A statement released by the MGA explains that the suspension of Genesis Global’s license is in effect as of January 16, 2023.

MGA Suspends Genesis Global’s Authorization

The Authority explained that the sanction was imposed after the company breached the regulations related to its license. In this case, Genesis Global is being wound up, which breaches Reg. 9 (1) (f) of the MGA’s regulations. Suspending the company’s authorization means that it is no longer allowed to conduct gambling operations. Genesis Global is no longer authorized to accept deposits from new customers or register new players. According to the MGA, its decision may be subject to appeal from the company.

The Authorized Person is thus no longer authorized to carry out any gaming operations, register new players or accept new customer deposits, and must continue collaborating with the Authority,

reads a statement released by the Malta Gaming Authority

The Company Faced Fines, Filed for Insolvency

Genesis Global’s downfall began back in 2019. At the time, the Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, issued a nearly $400,000 fine against the company. The sanction came after the regulator uncovered that the company failed to integrate Spelpaus, a self-exclusion tool that each Swedish operator needs to offer under the gambling regulations in the country. After a legal battle, the fine was decreased to $95,900.

Then, early in 2022, Genesis Global was hit with another fine, this time in the UK. A two-year investigation of the gambling regulator in the country, the Gambling Commission, flagged social responsibility and money laundering breaches. The Commission identified the breaches which resulted in a staggering $4.6 million fine.

After that, just before Christmas last month, Genesis Global laid off 140 employees. At the same time, the company filed for insolvency. Considering that the company discontinued its operations, all of its employees were laid off. “It is also with regret that we inform you, that the Company may not be able to pay all or any of the dues to you that are due to you in terms of law,” reads an email sent to redundant employees by Genesis Global back in December.

In December, the company explained that it is trying to find a solution to help its employees to receive the pay they are due. Considering its license suspension by the MGA, it remains unclear if Genesis Global will be able to return to business.

How Much Do NFL Refs Make? – Football Officials’ Salaries

How Much Do NFL Refs Make? – Football Officials’ Salaries

NFL player salaries are no secret. It was well documented that after signing a new contract in 2020, Patrick Mahomes could clear an eye-watering $502 million by 2031.

But what about NFL referees?

If you’ve ever wondered what the average NFL referee salary is per season, or how their salaries compare with other American sports, then keep reading.

NFL Referee Salaries

An NFL referee’s salary has never been officially released by the league, but it was reported in 2019 that they made an average of $205,000 per season.

This number was a $50k increase on reported salaries in 2018, so there is a possibility it has risen again.

Experienced referees earn big bonuses for taking extra post-season games, including the Super Bowl. Officiating legend Walt Anderson made an estimated $250,000 in 2019, his final year of refereeing.

Not bad, right? Even considering some of the explosive atmospheres refs face.

Any volunteers for Washington vs. Philadelphia at The Linc this year? Didn’t think so.

How Much Do NFL Refs Make Per Game?

There are 22 game weeks in the NFL, including the playoffs, but it is rare for an NFL ref to take more than 1 post-season game per year.

So, the maximum number of games an NFL official will work per season is 20.

That means an experienced official who works in the playoffs and takes home an annual salary of $250,000 gets paid $12,500 per game.

Even a less experienced ref, who takes home the reported average of $205,000 per season, will still bank a whopping $10,250 per game.

On a game-by-game comparison, this makes NFL refs the best paid in US sports because although NHL, NBA, and MLB refs all reportedly get paid more, they have to cover way more games.

In the NBA and NHL, the regular season consists of 82 games, let alone the MLB that has a giant 162-game regular season.

This means the average salary per game is by far the best for NFL refs.

👉 Sports’ Best Paid Referees Revealed

Who Is The Highest Paid NFL Ref In History?

There is no single stand-out NFL ref that is paid more than their peers, however, there are a handful of elite officials that receive the same highest salaries.

Brad Allen, Craig Wrolstad, and Sarah Thomas are the three active NFL refs that reportedly take home $250,000 annually.

The aforementioned Walt Anderson also made an estimated $250,000 during his final year of refereeing in 2019.

There are no reports that suggest an NFL referee has ever taken home more than $250,000, however, it is possible that salaries may have increased in line with inflation since 2019.

How Much Do Female NFL Referees Make?

Like their male counterparts, the salary for female NFL officials depends on experience and talent.

This is the only criterion that matters when it comes to NFL referee’s salaries, so women make the same amount as men in a similar position in their careers.

This is proven by Sarah Thomas, who became the first female official in NFL history when she joined the league in 2015.

Since then, she has gone on to become one of the most well-known referees in the league and paved the way for two other women to join the NFL officiating ranks.

Thomas was rewarded by the NFL in the 2021 playoffs when she worked on both the Divisional Round matchup between the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Super Bowl LV where the Bucs beat the Kansas City Chiefs.

In the 2022/23 NFL season, Sarah Thomas, Maia Chaka, and NFL rookie, Robin DeLorenzo make up the league’s female officiating team.

How Much Do NFL Refs Get Paid For The Super Bowl?

Again, the NFL has never publicly confirmed what officials get paid for the Super Bowl, however, reports suggest that referees make an extra $40-50,000 for the biggest event in US sport.

This is a significant bonus and reflects the fact that the eyes of the world are on the players, coaches and officials come Super Bowl time.

$50,000 is also considerably more than the reported $1-5,000 NFL officials make in normal playoff games.

Have You Got What It Takes?

The salary, only working for half the year, watching your favorite sport from the best seat in the house… the benefits to being an NFL ref are huge, so you might be wondering how you sign up.

Sorry to break it to you, but it ain’t easy making it to the big league… even as a ref.

Before the NFL even considers you, you need at least 10 years of experience as an American Football ref, with five of those covering major college games.

But don’t get ahead of yourself. Not anyone can just show up to their local high school game and start throwing flags.

You need to jump through several hoops before you can become a ref, even at the grassroots level.

You need training and state registration as a minimum, then you can start working your way up the refereeing ladder. Extra certifications and a college degree can also help, but just like the players, you have to perform.

The NFL doesn’t just scout playing talent. They also scout officials too.

So, best of luck, and if you reach the NFL, you’ll deserve every cent.

JP Morgan: Macau Operators Already Profitable

JP Morgan: Macau Operators Already Profitable

They say one swallow doesn’t make a summer, so Macau has been very proactive to diversify its efforts in restoring the SAR to its previous status as one of the best tourist spots for gambling aficionados.

Operators Profitable Again

The investment bank’s analyst – DS Kim – provided a weekly update sharing numbers for the Special Administrative Region’s (SAR) gaming revenue for the first half of January. JP Morgan’s analyst estimates that the gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the period was around MOP$4.3 billion (approx. $535 million). That would come to around MOP$287 million (around $35.6 million).

The GGR of the six licensed operators was boosted by the recent loosening of travel restrictions between the SAR, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Macau’s gambling business has historically been very closely tied to tourism and outside visitors. With the loosened restrictions came an increase in visitors, which naturally boosts the numbers.

Kim’s update underlined the importance of not comparing total GGR and focusing on mass recovery pace instead, as the continued decline in licensed junkets makes total GGR comparisons somewhat inaccurate. The analyst also mentioned the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, which is expected to boost the SAR’s recovery rate further, according to an IAG report.

JP Morgan updated its Q1 expectations for the SAR’s gambling market performance earlier this month, following the news of the travel restriction update. However, another driving force for the positive outlook was a series of changes that Macau made in order to combat the effects of the pandemic on the gaming market’s performance.

Macau’s Road to Recovery

A big piece of the puzzle is that the new gambling concessions came with a few major changes, which required adjustments on the side of the operators. Although the list of license holders wasn’t changed, the updates did breathe some new life into the conversation, and market participants took notice when creating their projections for the SAR.

For starters, the changes required operators to increase their registered capital from around $25 million to almost $615 million. This brought a big capital restructuring for the newly licensed operators and resulted in a lot more funds being allocated for the international operators’ Macau business arms. This is not all, however.

Operators were required to expand their non-gaming portfolios. Wynn Macau, for example, announced it would be investing $2.2 billion over the next 10 years, with this non-gaming expansion being at the forefront of its plans. This not only expands the operators’ offerings but also enables them to be more resilient to operational conditions negatively affecting a specific vertical.

Macau has also been plagued by a lot of illegal gambling and overall criminal activities, and the government recognized that fact as another limiting factor for investor and tourist interest. Naturally, bringing crime down was another pressing issue that needed to be addressed on the SAR’s path to recovery to, and who knows – maybe even surpassing – pre-pandemic numbers.

US Court Discards RCBC Dismissal Claim Over 2016 Bangladesh Cyber Heist

US Court Discards RCBC Dismissal Claim Over 2016 Bangladesh Cyber Heist

The 2016 cyber heist resulted in the loss of $81 million to Philippine casinos so the RCBC is facing accusations of negligence in failing to prevent cybercrime. It is also facing accusations that it did not implement adequate security measures to prevent the theft of such a large sum of money.

The New York Supreme Court Ruled Only on Its Jurisdiction

The case against RCBC was filed in May 2022 and RCBC argued that the court did not have the jurisdiction to hear the case. However, the court rejected this argument and confirmed that it has the jurisdiction to hear the case, but did not make any ruling on the validity of the lawsuit. The court also instructed both parties to try to resolve the dispute through mediation.

The incident that led to the lawsuit happened in 2016 when North Korean hackers sent 35 fake requests for money transfers of about $1 billion from Bangladesh Bank’s account to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The American bank was able to stop most of the transactions, but five transactions worth a total of $101 million were processed.

Bangladesh Bank was able to recover $20 million, but $81 million transferred to RCBC in the Philippines was lost, and some of it was used in casinos in the country.

The original lawsuit lodged by Bangladesh Bank listed 20 individuals and entities as defendants, among them Solaire Resort and Entertainment City, where some of the stolen funds were reportedly used to buy gaming chips and play in VIP gambling rooms.

However, in 2022, both Solaire and Eastern Hawaii managed to get their cases thrown out based on jurisdiction. Bangladesh Bank has filed an appeal against that decision, however, the court has not yet given a ruling on it.

A Court in the Philippines Unfroze Funds of a Chinese Gambling Company

In October 2019, the Manila City Regional Trial Court (RTC) lifted asset preservation orders (APOs) on the accounts of Eastern Hawaii Leisure owner Kam Sin Wong, Qiaoqiao Wendy Wang, and Dong Na Xu, as there was no evidence linking them to the cyber heist of funds from Bangladesh. It was alleged that the accounts were established to receive the embezzled funds from the Bangladesh central bank.

The Court of Appeals upheld this decision on April 29, 2022. The Philippines’ Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) appealed but the Court of Appeals again confirmed the decision on August 2, stating that AMLC did not provide new evidence to support their case. Eastern Hawaii Leisure returned $4.63 million as part of the stolen funds, but AMLC couldn’t prove the accounts were related to the cybercrime.

Livespins and Yolo Group set a New Paradigm-Changing Alliance

Livespins and Yolo Group set a New Paradigm-Changing Alliance

Livespins is a known social gaming platform that is elevating the way people experience iGaming products across the board, allowing audiences to watch, bet, and game along with their favorite streamers or brand ambassadors.

Bringing Livespins’ Product Offer to Yolo Group’s Fleet of Casinos

The advanced live stream gaming platform will allow Yolo Group to introduce the Livespins solution across its own distinct fleet of websites.

Livespins has already teamed up with a number of prominent gaming brands such as Relax Gaming, iSoftBet, and Yggdrasil to name a few, which means that the company’s own portfolio of products is pretty solid, offering Yolo Group’s operators hundreds of games that can be streamed and lead to better, more involved and socially-charged experience.

The entire product portfolio is developed in such a way as to take the iGaming gameplay and experience “to the next level,” enabling spectators to become an active part of the gameplay and participate in online gaming in any way that they see fit or enjoy.

Livespins is easy to integrate into the casino lobby and it is a product that neatly dovetails and overlays with a company’s existing offer, meaning that operators do not lose out on already existing content and product offerings by superseding them with Livespins.

Livespins CCO Michael Pedersen welcomed the opportunity and hailed Yolo Group and its fleet of player-favorite and well-known brands that will now benefit further from his company’s offer.

Product Built to Appeal to the “Next Generation”

Pedersen paid compliments to both Yolo Group and outlined the immediate priorities the company enjoys:

Livespins has been developed to allow online casino brands to unlock the huge potential that slot streaming provides but in a way that is responsible and compliant. It’s great to see Yolo Group embrace this and provide its players with an entirely new way to experience and enjoy online casino.

Livespins CCO Michael Pedersen

Yolo Group Director of Gaming Joe McCallum said that the organization was prepared to embrace the innovation that comes from a hard-hitting partner such as Livespins. Livespins is appealing to the next generation of players.

“There is no denying the popularity of slot streaming, and through Livespins we can leverage this in a way that is responsible and compliant,” McCallum explained. He is confident that players across Yolo Group’s brands will welcome the new feature and embrace it. Livespins previously teamed with EveryMatrix, becoming available to all of the content aggregator’s partners and operators. A similar partnership was negotiated with Hub88.

Mike Postle Slow-Rolled at Beau Rivage Final Table: “That’s for All the Cheating You’ve Done”

Mike Postle Slow-Rolled at Beau Rivage Final Table: "That's for All the Cheating You've Done"

Accused poker cheater Mike Postle had a memorable exit from the Beau Rivage Million Dollar Heater Main Event Monday evening when his opponent — Brock Gary — went into the tank with top pair facing an all-in wager.

Following the slow roll, Gary needled Postle, who had just busted in seventh place for $32,703 in the $1,200 buy-in event.

“That’s for all the cheating you’ve done,” Gary said in the video posted by the Gulf Coast Poker.NET Facebook page.

Postle, who was accused by Veronica Brill in 2019 of cheating during Stones Live streams, reached the final table of 10 with a middling stack. With $208,400 to the winner, he was in line to earn his biggest score ever, which just so happens to be about the amount he was alleged to have won on Stones Live using what some refer to as “God mode.”

Top Stories of 2020: Mike Postle Saga Winds Down

Postle Eliminated in 7th Place

Entering play at the Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, his first tournament in over three years, Postle had racked up $570,000 in lifetime live tournament cashes, according to Hendon Mob.

The video shown on the GulfCoastPoker.NET Facebook page was picked up on a flop of {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and Postle had moved all in. Gary, holding a larger stack, went into the tank for about 30 second before sigh-calling with {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for top set, a clear slow-roll. His opponent flipped over {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} for an over pair.

The {2-Diamonds} on the turn and {q-Spades} were of no help to the Northern California poker pro who has kept a low-profile since the scandal came out three years ago. He was sent home in seventh place and now has just over $600,000 in lifetime live tournament cashes.

Gary’s slow-roll wasn’t acceptable to some, but not because he attempted it. As Terrence Chan commented on Twitter, “that slowroll was like 5 minutes too short.”

Brill also wasn’t too enthusiastic in how Gary handled himself despite the slow-roll.

Although Postle won a significant amount of money, his haters can take solace in the fact that he didn’t win the six-figure first-place prize. Max Young, who took the photo of Postle that had surfaced on social media, wrote on Twitter that Gary also told Postle on the way out, “that’s for the poker community you scum.”

Gary ended up part of a three-way chop in which he, Kooroush Gahedi, and Jeremy Eyer, the three top stacks to start the day, each received $144,380. Gahedi was considered the official winner, however.

The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Sycuan $1,110 buy-in Main Event that wrapped up Sunday had an unlikely fourth-place finisher who took home a career-high $41,518 after navigating through the field of 613 runners. Corey Peeples, a California father, bartender and poker enthusiast, had only played $80 tournaments before he was staked in the MSPT event by poker vlogger Johnnie “Vibes” Moreno, who “felt inspired” to give Peeples a shot at chasing a big score.

“Tuesday I was eating Ramen & the bartender watches my vlog so we were chatting poker,” Moreno wrote on Twitter. “He’s a Dad now & doesn’t get to play anymore. Lives vicariously through vlogs.”

Moreno and Peeples agreed to a staking arrangement that would see Peeples keep 50% of his winnings with 40% going to Moreno and 10% to another bartender.

“Since he has no real poker tournament experience I had no expectations of making money,” tweeted Moreno. “Just wanted to do something nice for these guys.”

Moreno’s kind gesture paid off for all those involved as Peeples was able to spin up his $1,110 buy-in and get by far his biggest tournament cash ever. Indiana’s Jason Mendoza ended up winning the MSPT Sycuan Main Event for a career-best $102,823, while Alexei Racila (2nd – $77,000) and Thomas Kornecook (3rd – $77,000) also made deep runs, according to MSPT live updates.

Sweating With Corey

As the poker enthusiast turned MSPT grinder made it deep on Day 2, his poker-vlogging backer was there every step of the way. Moreno documented the deep on social media and kept his 17,600 Twitter followers updated on Peeples’ progress.

“I don’t know if you know this, but there were like thousands of people sweating you on Twitter,” Moreno told Peeples in a post-tournament interview. “The man does not have a Twitter.”

“Thank you guys, I’m sorry,” Peeples said. “I’m not going to get one, either.”

Moreno was there when Peeples made the final table and scored an early double-up when his ace-jack sucked out on an opponent’s ace-king.

After letting his followers know that Peeples had $41,518 locked up with four left, Moreno filmed the action as Peeples check-raised all in with ace-high against the two pair of Kornecook, whose hand held up after the river to end Peeples’ unlikely run.

“(I’ve ) probably played 15 tournaments at casinos,” Peeples told Moreno. “I’ve definitely played a couple $80 (tournaments) at Oceans (Casino Resort). I probably dug more into the daily at Seven Mile (Casino). It’s like a $50 but you can re-buy.”

“Super proud of this guy,” Johnny “Vibes” said.

The Peeples Champion

Moreno wasn’t exaggerating when he told Peeples there were thousands sweating him on social media. Many were casual poker fans and viewers of Moreno’s vlog, but there were also plenty of household names who voiced support for the staked player, including all-time bracelet leader Phil Hellmuth.

Other players who tweeted support for Peeples include 2021 MSPT Player of the Year Kyna England, Michael Holtz, Danielle Andersen and Will Jaffe.
