DraftKings to Withdraw DFS Offering from Four EU Markets

DraftKings to Withdraw DFS Offering from Four EU Markets

The US daily fantasy sports contest and sports betting company has made the decision to withdraw its daily fantasy sports (DFS) offering from four big markets on the European continent. The list includes Malta, Germany, Ireland, and Austria, where the company’s DFS operations will be officially shut down starting January 22.

Customers Will Not Be Able to Operate Their Accounts After January 22

DraftKings, which enables users to participate in daily and weekly fantasy sports–related contests and win money has sent an email to the company’s customers, putting them up-to-date with the fresh news. The email explained that DraftKings will stop providing its daily fantasy sports contests to customers in the four countries. The company launched in Germany, Austria, Malta, and Ireland six years ago, in 2017, and has “been proud to be a part of those countries’ passionate sports and daily fantasy sports fanbases”, according to the same informative email.

Customers were also informed that their “Contest Tickets”, “Crowns”, and “DK Dollars” that they had been using as currency within the DFS games would be turned into USD on January 18 when withdrawals would be initiated. The transactions would also be subject to the conversion rate on the respective date.

From 22 January onwards, DraftKings’ customers in the aforementioned four countries will no longer be able to deposit or withdraw from their DFS accounts. DraftKings has, therefore, encouraged its customers in the four targeted European countries to ask for their withdrawals as soon as possible.

DraftKings to Hand Over Remaining Funds from DFS Accounts to the MGA

Starting January 23, the company that “dutifully and soulfully” invests in people, technology, and processes and calls responsibility their cultural GPS, will hand over all remaining funds from all inactive DFS accounts to the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA). The MGA has licensed the company’s business on the continent.

As one of the company’s flagship product areas, DFS first started out in the form of a fantasy sports-oriented provider in 2012, prior to reaching the sports betting vertical six years later as a result of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act’s (PASPA) repeal. PASPA is a federal law from 1992 that imposed restrictions on all but a small number of US states in regard to the legalization of sports betting.

Last May, DraftKings made its way into the Canadian market by scoring Ontario’s 12th gambling operator license. During the same month, the company announced a multi-market agreement with High 5 Games in an attempt to improve its presence in Michigan.

Last summer, DraftKings participated in and promoted the National Conference on Gambling Addiction and Responsible Gambling, while also sponsoring the event.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Premier League Odds, Time, and Prediction

Liverpool vs Chelsea Premier League Odds, Time, and Prediction

Exactly one year ago, Liverpool and Chelsea were in the Top 3 in the Premier League. Ahead of their duel on Saturday, January 21, the two are occupying the #9 and #10 position, respectively.

It’s fair to say that neither team can be proud of their recent performances, but the fact is that both teams do have the manpower necessary to bounce back. And we’re certain both will return to the winning track very soon; but which team will do it first?

Liverpool vs Chelsea Odds

Moneyline Odds
Liverpool -118
Draw +275
Chelsea +320
Goals Over/Under Odds
Over 2.5 Points -137
Under 2.5 Points +110

*Odds taken from FanDuel on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

When, Where, and How to Watch?

  • Place: Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England
  • Date: Saturday, January 21, 2023
  • Time: 7:30 AM ET
  • How to Watch: Universo & USA Network

Liverpool Need to Patch the Holes in their Defense

The Red have played two Premier League games so far in 2023, and they lost each time. First, the Brentford Bees strung them 3-1 in London; then, the Seagulls pecked them apart 3-0 in Brighton.

Conceding three goals per game isn’t something Liverpool’s defense got us used to. However, there’s an explanation for that. The Reds’ best defender – Virgil van Dijk – is out with an injury.

The situation is even worse when it comes to Liverpool’s offense, with (at least) four strikers currently on the injury list. Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are definitely out of the protocol, while Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino are doubtful for Saturday’s game.

Nevertheless, even without those four, Jurgen Klopp does have a number of fantastic forwards at his disposal – Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, etc. – they just need to start playing better soccer ASAP.

Chelsea’s Offense Needs to Start Scoring More

Chelsea’s fans are once again talking about the “No. 9 curse.” The player wearing that shirt – Aubameyang Pierre-Emerick – has been in dreadful form this season. He’s played 10 Premier League games in the Chelsea jersey, scoring only one goal along the way.

Unfortunately, his colleagues from the attacking department haven’t been much better either. Plus, many of them have suffered injuries that will keep them off the pitch in Saturday’s game – Christian Pulisic, Raheem Sterling, and Armando Broja.

Knowing all this, it’s no surprise Chelsea owner decided to splash out a hefty sum to bring Joao Felix on a loan deal from Atletico Madrid. He was supposed to add more firepower to the Blues, but the 23-year-old Portuguese got a red card on his debut. As a result, he now won’t be available for the Liverpool vs Chelsea game.

They also signed Ukrainian rising star Mykhailo Mudryk, but he might not be ready to start on Saturday. So, who will play in Chelsea’s attack?

It’s almost 100% certain coach Graham Potter will move attacking midfielder Kai Havertz closer to the opposition goal. Chelsea’s scoring leader (five goals in the EPL) does know how to play in this position, although we can’t call him an expert striker.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Prediction

Liverpool’s defense has been horrendous in 2023, but luckily for them, so is Chelsea’s offense. That’s why the Reds don’t need to worry much about protecting their goal on Saturday.

The big question is whether their banged-up offense can find the net against the Blues. With the help of the fans at Anfield, we think they can.

Picks: Liverpool to win; under 2.5 goals

Rytis Strigunas Secures the PartyPoker Championship Main Event Title

Rytis Strigunas Secures the PartyPoker Championship Main Event Title

The PartyPoker Championship (PPC) Winter Edition is over after the champion of the $500,000 guaranteed Main Event crowned its champion on January 17. Six Day 1s accommodated 1,089 entrants, who created a guarantee-busting $544,500 prize pool that the top 164 finishers shared. Ireland-based Rytis Strigunas is the player that will forever be known as this Main Event’s champion, and the player that has $78,160 of the prize pool nestled in his PartyPoker account.

PPC Winter Main Event Final Table Results

Place Player Country Prize
1 Rytis Strigunas Ireland $78,160*
2 Victor Oliveira Girao Brazil $72,827*
3 Dan Wilson United Kingdom $42,314
4 Hristo Dimitrov Bulgaria $27,649
5 Dalton Hobold Brazil $18,947
6 Simon Beckmann Austria $14,635
7 Jesus Martinez Ucero Estoinia $11,540
8 Fabian Schmidt Austria $9,146
9 Ramon Kropmanns Brazil $7,213

*reflects a heads-up deal

The first of the six PPC Winter Main Event flights shuffled up and dealt on Christmas Day, although Strigunas did not enter the mix until Day 1E on January 16. Striganus turned his 500,000 starting stack in the $530 buy-in tournament into 4,109,314 chips, which were enough for seventh place on the Day 1E leaderboard. He built upon his solid start, navigating his way through the 164-strong Day 2 field and finding himself at the final table.

Strigunas left plenty of elite-level grinders in his wake as he marched towards the nine-handed final table. Elio Fox, Ognyan Dimov, Roman Hrabec, Jerry Odeen, and Team PartyPoker’s Matt Staples reached Day 2 but fell outside of the top 100 finishing places.

Michael Gathy
Michael Gathy was one of a hist of stars to cash in the PPC Winter Main Event

Tomi Brouk, Fabiano Kovalski, four-time WSOP bracelet winner Michael Gathy, Niklas Astedt, Preben Stokkan, and Alexandros Theologis went deep but fell short of a place at the final table where the bulk of the prize money lay in wait.

The eliminations of Ramon Kropmanns ($7,213) and Fabian Schmidt ($9,146) reduced the field to only seven players, with all seven stars now guaranteed to take home a prize weighing in at $11,000 or more. Jesus Martinez Ucero ($11,540) was the first recipient of such a five-figure prize.

Austria’s last representative, Simon Beckmann, bowed out in sixth ($14,635) before Brazil’s Dalton Hobold ($18,947), who had been among the chip leaders from start to finish, fell in fifth.

Dalton Hobold
Dalton Hobold came unstuck in fifth place

The field grew even shorter with the untimely demise of Hristo Dimitrov ($27,649) before progressing to heads-up when the 2016 Irish Open Main Event champion Dan Wilson ($42,314) crashed out.

Originally, first and second place was scheduled to pay $89,415 and $61,571, respectively, a difference of almost $28,000. That pay jump proved too much for the heads-up duo of Strigunas and Victor Oliveira Girao, and the pair struck a deal. The deal ultimately resulted in Girao finishing second for $72,827, and Stigunas walked away with the title of champion, an accolade that came with $78,160 in prize money.

Strengthening the infrastructure:

Following the terms of the agreement, Greentube Austria will take over a major stake in the Malta-based IT company to strengthen its B2B infrastructure and use Alteatec’s leading iGaming technology Olympus One to bolster its management system and platform offerings. Olympus One is a state-of-the-art system that offers Bonus Engines, Duel Tournaments, and other gamification tools, but also realizes a new concept of connecting the online world with land-based casinos and player lounges through the new Landbased Connection and Partner modules.

Thomas Graf, CEO at Greentube, said: “I am delighted to start 2023 in such momentous fashion. Alteatec is a market leader in iGaming technology and being able to utilize its talented and experienced team is going to be game-changing for Greentube going forward.”

Comprehensive solutions available:

Greentube will also use the provider’s award-winning content portfolio, as well as Alteatec’s key live dealer streaming and voiceover technology to reinforce its reputation as a leading content supplier to the iGaming industry. The latest deal will therefore result in Greentube’s capability to combine Alteatec technology with the NOVOMATIC electronic table games technology, Novo Unity, to provide comprehensive offline and online solutions.

The acquisition also includes the assignment of the managing director’s position in Alteatec to Greentube CEO Thomas Graf and COO Georg Gubo, who will manage Alteatec together with its current MD Christian Sael. The company, established in Austria in 2001, has built a strong reputation as a worldwide supplier of innovative solutions in the iGaming field. Georg Gubo, COO at Greentube, said: “It’s incredibly satisfying watching the business grow, especially when we’re bringing in some of the best talent from around the world via this acquisition. Alteatec’s technology will rapidly increase our overall output, taking us to the next level.”

Delaware Lottery Seeks New iGaming Partner

Delaware Lottery Seeks New iGaming Partner

The Lottery has issued a request for proposal (RFP), opening the doors for several high-profile operators to compete for the coveted position. This decision can significantly impact players in the state, especially considering that the Lottery is also considering introducing online sports betting. The process should complete by late spring after an intense round of presentations and negotiations.

Only Three Operators Match the Requirements

iGaming in Delaware has been under the sole management of 888 since the operator first signed its exclusive contract with the state Lottery in 2013. The agreement received several extensions, cementing 888’s position as Delaware’s de-facto gaming operator. However, the Lottery’s recent decision to open the doors for new bidders may end the UK-based company’s sole reign.

Despite the Lottery’s willingness to reach out to new partners, the RFP criteria are exceedingly strict, limiting potential choices to several high-profile operators. The extensive list of requirements limits potential applicants to those who already maintain a presence in the USA and can offer a wide range of products. If we consider online poker a must, that leaves only 888, BetMGM, and PokerStars.

888 Will Be Hard-Pressed to Maintain Its Position

The RPF states that the process should finalize by the end of spring. Applicants can submit any written questions by 3 February and must enter their submissions by 17 February. 1 March to 15 March is reserved for talks with vendors, and negotiations with selected partners will begin on 24 March.

The wording of the requirements is a cause of worry for 888, as they imply an operator with online sports betting experience would have an advantage- a field the UK company lags behind compared to some of its competitors. 888 US President Howard Mittman discussed the matter with online news portal pokerfuse, expressing hope that the operator’s previous track record would help it to pull ahead of the competition.

(888) has enjoyed a long-standing, mutually beneficial relationship with the state of Delaware, and we look forward to the continued opportunity to work with the state.

Howard Mittman, 888 US president

888’s position in Delaware has gone from a virtually undisputed monopoly to highly uncertain in just a few weeks. While the operator’s significant experience in the state may prove sufficient to win it another five years, it will have to fight tooth and nail with some of the industry’s most high-profile players.

Losing the exclusive contract will be a significant blow to the UK gambling giant, whose stocks have already suffered after its disappointing Q4 financial results. The company is very much in need of good news, and securing its position in a highly profitable market can be just the boost it needs to alleviate any rising concerns. However, 888 will have to prove its mettle during the coming exciting months.

TonyBet fined for asking winners for ID leaving other gamblers unchecked | Gambling

An online betting firm has been fined £442,750 for demanding ID from winning punters before it would give them the cash, while failing to carry out similar checks on potentially vulnerable people depositing money.

The Gambling Commission punished TonyBet, which is based in Estonia but has a licence to operate in Great Britain, for imposing unfair terms and failures in anti-money laundering and social responsibility measures.

The online casino told customers it had the right to request identification documents for “all withdrawals” despite not having insisted on those same checks earlier, potentially hampering withdrawals but not deposits.

Kay Roberts, the executive director of operations at the Gambling Commission, said: “Not only does this case illustrate our drive to clamp down on anti-money laundering and social responsibility failures, but it also highlights action we will take against gambling businesses who fail to be fair and open with customers.”

The fine highlights a practice that seldom attracts the attention of regulators. Gamblers have often alleged that strict checks are demanded of customers only when they win, with no equivalent scrutiny of whetherthey are suffering financial and mental harm.

The government is expected to publish a white paper on gambling reform within weeks, which could include much stricter requirements on operators to perform affordability checks after a string of cases where addicted gamblers lost huge sums.

Industry lobbyists, such as the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), have repeatedly voiced opposition to the prospect of any measures that would be “intrusive”.

TonyBet will pay a fine of £442,750 after the transgressions were discovered during an audit in 2021. The company, which is not a member of the BGC, is an Estonia-based online casino carved out of a business founded by the Lithuanian businessman and professional gambler Antanas Guoga, known in the gambling world as Tony G.

TonyBet also told winning punters their cash could be confiscated if they did not provide anti-money laundering documentation within 30 days. While the business demanded that winners went through such hurdles to collect, the commission found it failed to conduct adequate risk assessments of the business being used for money laundering and terrorist financing, or put controls in place to stop such activity.

Nick Goff, a professional sports bettor and former industry professional, said: “It is long overdue that firms were punished for this practice. It has been happening routinely at a lot of firms for a few years now.”

The Guardian has approached TonyBet and Guoga for comment.

DraftKings Pulling Out of DFS Markets in Austria, Germany, Ireland, and Malta

Closed sign

US sports betting giant DraftKings has shocked fans of its daily fantasy sports (DFS) offerings in Europe by suddenly pulling out of several markets.

The operator notified its customers in Austria, Germany, Ireland, and Malta via an email on Tuesday this week. It said that effective January 22, people physically located in these countries will not be able to deposit or enter DFS contests.

DraftKings confirmed that on Wednesday it will convert all currencies on these websites to US dollars. Customers can still withdraw funds up to that date, but any cash left in accounts after Sunday will be remit to the Malta Gaming Authority. The email also noted the firm’s pride at having being a part of these markets since 2017.

could well spell trouble for the fantasy sports sector non-US.”

Phil Pearson, the CEO of White Label Casinos who first shared the news on LinkedIn, stated that it likely signifies “a big change coming in local licensing for sites.” He added that if DraftKings can’t make it work then “this could well spell trouble for the fantasy sports sector non-US, and even more sportsbooks.”

UKGC Hits TonyBet with $550K Fine over Various Breaches

UKGC Hits TonyBet with $550K Fine over Various Breaches

The fine was announced Wednesday and sees TonyBet, which operates tonybet.co.uk, receive a £442,750 ($547,300) financial penalty from the gambling regulator. In addition to the financial penalty that the operator would need to pay, the Commission issued a warning.

Gambling Commission Uncovers AML Deficiencies

The gambling watchdog pointed out that TonyBet did not conduct an adequate risk assessment of its business and failed to determine the risks of it being exploited by criminal activities such as money laundering and terrorist financing. What’s more, it said that the operator did not establish necessary procedures, policies and controls against terrorist financing and money laundering. Those deficiencies were in breach of the AML regulations, according to the Commission.

Kay Roberts, the Commission’s executive director of operations, said that the latest regulatory action reaffirms the regulator’s commitment to enforcing regulation against operators breaching social responsibility and AML rules. At the same time, Roberts said that the action confirms that the Commission is prepared to take action against operators offering unfair or non-transparent services to their clients.

Not only does this case illustrate our drive to clamp down on anti-money laundering and social responsibility failures, but also highlights action we will take against gambling businesses who fail to be fair and open with customers.

Kay Roberts, executive director of operations at the Gambling Commission

The Probe Finds Social Responsibility Breaches, Unfair Conditions

Besides AML breaches, the Commission flagged social responsibility failures. According to the gambling watchdog, TonyBet failed to identify customers who may be at risk of gambling harm. Additionally, the Commission said the operator failed to “interact with customers who may be at risk of experiencing harms associated with gambling.”

Aside from the described breaches, the Commission uncovered unfair terms submitted via the operator’s website. An example pointed out by the regulator included that TonyBet “may request identification documents for ‘all withdrawals’ while not having insisted on those same checks earlier in the business relationship.” This, according to the gambling watchdog can cause difficulties with withdrawals but it doesn’t apply to deposits.

If customers failed to provide AML documents within 30 days, their winnings could be confiscated by the operator, which is another unfair term, according to the Commission. Finally, the regulator flagged an issue with accounts that are to be considered “dormant” after six months of inactivity, saying that this period should be 12 months instead.
