In a Poker World Gone Mad, the World Poker Tour (WPT) is Proving Itself Righteous

Controversy. Drama. Cheating. Grudge Matches. There’s no denying such stories get clicks, but at what point does it become detrimental and tiresome? For many, that point came earlier this week with the High Stakes Poker Live Stream, which prominently featured players like Doug Polk, Nik Airball, Matt Berkey, and Eric Persson, all players who are often knee-deep in the poker muck.

As the cackles echoed throughout the PokerGO Studio and into homes across the world for all those watching, I was down at the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood, which was playing host to the World Poker Tour (WPT) Poker Showdown.

That night there was a Charity Series of Poker (CSOP) event raising money for Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, while a week before WPT Ambassadors Andrew Neeme and Brad Owen hosted a meet-up game. It was there that Owen made a dream come true when he bought 20-year-old Cody Peacock into the game, a story reported by Jeff Walsh that you must read over at worldpokertour.com.

On Friday night, I also got invited on a special catamaran excursion with the WPT family, who were taking out a pair of ClubWPT qualifiers – Metti Saliu and Jon Batye. While heading out into the open seas, it suddenly struck me just how much good the WPT is doing for the poker community.

Check out the WPT Hub on PokerNews here!

Emphasis on Players

Jon Batye and Metti Saliu
ClubWPT qualifiers Jon Batye and Metti Saliu.

There were quite literally 10 members of the WPT team on the trip with the sole goal of making sure the qualifiers had an experience, which I can tell you they did. Both were throwing back drinks as the catamaran sailed through the harbor and out into the ocean. Batye was embracing the spotlight and calling himself “the talent,” which was a role for which he was made. Saliu was a bit more reserved but didn’t shy away from chatting with everyone.

I was witnessing firsthand the effort the WPT has long put into the player experience, not just on the tournament macro level, but on the micro levels as well by providing such experiences to those who are playing the WPT for the first and quite possibly only time. It was a smaller dose of what the poker world saw on full display last December at the WPT World Championship at the Wynn, which rightfully won “Event of the Year” at the Global Poker Awards.

A Family Affair

WPT Family
The WPT family with the ClubWPT qualifiers.

Those buzzwords I mentioned above – Controversy. Drama. Cheating. Grudge Matches – when was the last time you associated them with the WPT? Similarly, when was the last time any of the WPT talent was embroiled in a scandal? Neeme and Owen aren’t out picking fights or calling out players. Vince Van Patten and Tony Dunst follow in the footsteps of the late Mike Sexton, who set the bar high on being kind and professional in the poker world. And Lynn Gilmartin, who I had the pleasure of working with for several years at PokerNews, is quite literally one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

I can also tell you from experience that the people working behind the scenes are just as kind and professional. Lance Bradley, Jeff Walsh, and Tim Fiorvanti are magic on the content team, while Eric Lusch and Easton Oreman are a pleasure to work with on the media side of things. When on-site, Hilary St. Clair, Sam Carioti, and many others help cultivate a top-notch player experience, while the team reporters (shout out to Mickey Doft, BJ Nemeth, and Al Rash), photographers, and production staff make the wheels go around.

Brad Owen
WPT ambassador Brad Owen doing his thing.

For his part, WPT tournaments are always run by experienced staff often led by Matt Savage, who in my opinion is overdue for the Poker Hall of Fame, and of course, it all stems from WPT President Adam Pliska, who has always put an emphasis on family.

Let’s face it, if those making headlines these days were a family, they’d be the Lohan’s, whereas those on the WPT are the Partridge Family. The former can be entertaining — who doesn’t like a good train wreck after all — but the latter should serve as an inspiration.

I’m sure this all came across as a fluff piece for the WPT, but even if it did, it’s well-deserved. All I can say is that I didn’t have to write this, but rather felt inspired to do so. Like many, I am discontent with a lot of what’s happening in the poker world, much of which I have to highlight and push given my role. While I’m guilty of perpetuating the negative narratives, I don’t want it to stop me from giving credit, love, and a spotlight to the good things in poker.

The WPT is most certainly one of them.

CAN UNDERSTANDING HOT AND COLD ROULETTE NUMBERS IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING?

CAN UNDERSTANDING HOT AND COLD ROULETTE NUMBERS IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING?

This post is syndicated by the Las Vegas Advisor for the 888 casino group. Anthony Curtis comments on the 888 article introduced and linked to on this page.

AC says: There are ways to beat roulette, e.g., exploiting biased wheels or applying physics in what’s referred to as prediction, but playing hot or cold numbers isn’t one of them. To be fair, the author cautions several times that hot- and-cold-number strategies can blow up in your face, but he never comes out and debunks them. On the contrary, while no specific claims are made, the tone of the article is that this might be a winning strategy. It’s not. If you’re a systems player who doesn’t mind playing a negative-expectation game, playing hot or cold numbers won’t make things any worse than betting randomly, so there’s no real harm done. Just be aware that your expectation on every bet on a double-zero wheel is -5.26%. A better strategy is to find a wheel (for the same stakes) with a single zero to cut the edge to -2.7%. Better yet, play with a 2-1 matchplay coupon.

This article was written by Stephen R. Tabone in association with 888Casino.

Can understanding hot and cold roulette numbers improve your chances of winning?

Roulette is a game of chance, but we are always on the lookout for strategies to improve our odds of winning. One of the most popular roulette strategies is based on hot and cold numbers. But will understanding and implementing it improve our chances of winning?

In this article, I will explain what hot and cold numbers are, and whether betting on them can really help you win at roulette. I will also introduce a new roulette betting strategy that focuses on warm zone roulette numbers, which may increase your chances of winning.

A “Small” Fire Breaks Out at Horseshoe Las Vegas, Home of World Series of Poker (WSOP)

A “Small” Fire Breaks Out at Horseshoe Las Vegas, Home of World Series of Poker (WSOP)

There was quite the scene at Horseshoe Las Vegas on Friday night as a “small” fire broke out at the home of the World Series of Poker (WSOP).

According to local news reports, a fire broke out on the 19th floor of the Horseshoe Las Vegas hotel that caused part of the Las Vegas Strip to shut down as firefighters contained the blaze. In fact, it was reported that 20 fire vehicles and engines, as well as 76 fire personnel, responded to the scene.

“Sprinklers were activated which kept the fire contained to a small area, and crews extinguished the remainder of the burning material,” Clark County Fire Deputy Chief Billy Samuels stated in a news release.

While some people requested medical attention at the scene, no serious injuries were reported, and thankfully no one needed to go to the hospital.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no dollar loss amount has been determined,” Samuels added.

It was a scary situation, however, as the property has experienced a major fire disaster in the past. Back in 1980, when the venue was MGM Grand, it was the site of the deadliest fire in Las Vegas history as 85 victims lost their lives.

It Wasn’t Hellmuth

Back in 2021, 16-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth was at a WSOP final table when he lost a big hand and had a patented meltdown when he controversially said, “I think I’m gonna burn this f***ing place down if I don’t win this f***ing tournament.”

So, is it possible the “Poker Brat” actually followed through?

The answer is unequivocally no as he was at Hustler Casino Live (HCL) in California losing two buy-ins, while the fire took place at Horseshoe Las Vegas, not the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino where Hellmuth previously made his “threat.”

Still, probably best not to say such things in the future.

Entain Has Paid a Fine for Accepting In-Play Wagers

Entain Has Paid a Fine for Accepting In-Play Wagers

The Australian Financial Review (AFR), reports that the sports wagering giant Entain has paid the $13,320 fine for accepting illegal bets during the LIV golf tournament. The fine for the violation of the Australian gambling law was imposed by Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

78 Illegal Bets Accepted:

While the LIV golf tournament was live, Entain’s online sports betting verticals Ladbroke and Neds illegally accepted 78 online bets.  As AFR reports, they thus violated the ”in-play” wagering rule prohibiting real-time wager placements when the sports event is live. Entain, the parent company of the two wagering operations, has paid $13,320 for the infringement, which is the maximum fine for in-play bets as prescribed by the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

In-Play Betting:

The penalty imposed by Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) on the $16 billion UK-listed sports betting giant was reportedly the first notice issued for a breach of the “in-play” betting rule. But the fine also represents a continuation of a series of regulatory actions to involve Entain operations. The operator is currently expecting the outcome of the Australian anti-money laundering body’s investigation that may incur a $22 million penalty per infringement, as well as multiple regulatory actions.

Entain has already paid a $ 29 million fine to UK Gambling Commission for similar violations, according to the source. But in October 2022, Entain’s subsidiaries Ladbrokes and Neds accepted 78 online bets on the final day of the Bangkok LIV Golf tournament. As ACMA reportedly claims, these bets were placed during the game and represented in-play bets subject to legal sanctions.

Bets Voided:

Entain reverted to ACMA explaining that the company had mistakenly entered a discrepant start time of the final event into the wagering systems. It reportedly resulted in 59 wagers accepted through Ladbrokes and 19 through Neds’ services after the start of the event. According to the source, Entain realized the mistake three hours after the start of the game following a suggestion from a customer.

Robust Systems Required:

ACMA reportedly said that all bets were effectively voided. “Online in-play betting increases the risk for those people experiencing gambling harm as it provides fast outcomes and allows for a higher frequency of bets,” ACMA chair Nerida O’Loughlin reportedly said, and added that she was disappointed that a highly experienced operator like Entain did not have internal procedures in place to either prevent or discover the error.

AFR reports that O’Loughlin also said: “The ACMA made it clear to the industry last year that they must have robust systems in place to ensure that online in-play bets are not made available or accepted.”

High Stakes Poker Live Was a Grippingly Entertaining Painfully Unwatchable Mess

High Stakes Poker Live

Unsavory behavior

“This guy is a raving lunatic,” said commentator Nick Schulman about the self-anointed King of LA, poker’s newest bad boy Nikhil Arcot as he downed his umpteenth glass of Pinot Noir during a tumultuous seven hours in the PokerGO studio.

Nik ‘Airball,’ as Arcot is better known, brought his signature smack-talk and rowdiness to proceedings from the get-go but as the wine took its toll, his schtick disintegrated into naked bravado and idiocy. It was noteworthy that his goader and cheerleader Doug Polk and Lynne Ji eventually stopped egging him on as it became apparent that he was off the rails, a dancing, shouting, burping buffoon.

poker for the ‘Love Is Blind’ generation

It was a glorious circus and an inglorious horror-show, compelling viewing that revealed the worst of poker. It was not just madness but the cause of madness in others. It was poker for the ‘Love Is Blind’ generation except it was the audience that wanted to pluck out their eyes.

Poker beefs

Needless to say, poker is a competitive endeavour and with competition comes rivalry and with rivalry sometimes you get genuine animosity between players. Poker players are a diverse bunch, coming from all walks of life with a variety of world views so, off the felt, there is probably more conflict than you would find in other communities too.

Right now, it does feel like we are more polarized than ever before with arguments and disagreements between members of the community receiving more attention than the actual playing of the game we all love. These beefs dominate poker Twitter, occasionally spilling over to the felt.

Whether it is real beef or manufactured beef, shows like Hustler’s ‘Max-Pain Monday’ have leaned into the professional wrestling model, accentuating the pre-game verbal altercations to spice up the eventual on-felt activities. The concern is, however, that while conflict is certainly the key to riveting drama, it can also put off a lot of people.

there are a lot of people who are intimidated by the obnoxious carry-on”

My fellow VegasSlotsOnline News contributor Dara O’Kearney is fed up of the “for clicks” justification. In an upcoming episode of ‘The Chip Race,’ he says “this sort of behaviour might encourage people to watch poker but I don’t think it makes many want to play it. I know from personal experience of coaching students that there are a lot of people who are intimidated by the obnoxious carry-on. Worryingly, this group trends heavily towards demographics already underrepresented live, like females.”

Negreanu’s beefs cost him millions

Historically, one of the biggest poker beefs was between two of the games biggest content creators, veteran Daniel Negreanu and heads-up specialist Doug Polk. In July 2020, Negreanu finally had enough of Polk’s relentless jibes and accepted a challenge to play him heads-up. Seven months later, Polk had learned an important lesson about the price of trolling as he backed up the truck to the tune of $1.2m.

Negreanu may have lost a chunk of money but, in taking on Polk, he learned a lot about the modern game. He was keen to demonstrate those new skills by reigniting an old rivalry with Phil Hellmuth. ‘The Poker Brat’ obliged and a rejuvenated Negreanu had his fish on the hook for a High Stakes Dual.

The build-up involved a lot of boisterousness as Negreanu relentlessly criticized his rival’s belief in ‘white magic’ and questioned his record against tougher opposition. “On the major league high roller circuit, he cannot win,” said Negreanu, adding: “He may have been a GOAT of his era, but that era is long gone.” Negreanu also boasted of the additional side action he was taking on himself in the match.

Hellmuth won 3:0 for a $350,000 combined win

In response, Hellmuth was cordial, respectful and complimentary of Negreanu and when the matches finally took place between March and June 2021, Hellmuth won 3:0 for a $350,000 combined win. “Where’s the window, baby?” said an almost giggly Phil Hellmuth, after completing the High Stakes Dual II whitewash.

A World’s Fair of grudge matches

Other famous poker feuds include those between Polk and Charlie Carrel, Polk and Fernando ‘JNandez,’ Habegger and, more recently, Polk and Matt Berkey. There is also plenty of friction between Berkey and Nik Airball, Berkey and Ji, and Berkey and Eric Persson. It is against that backdrop that a live High Stakes Poker line-up was concocted by PokerGO Director of Programming Brett Hanks.

On April 17th, Schulman took to Twitter to break the news:

Billed as the World’s Fair of grudge matches, PokerGO had a hunch how things might go:

On Thursday night, Jean-Robert Bellande, Rob Yong, and Jennifer Tilly took their seats alongside the potentially explosive quintet of Polk, Persson, Ji, Berkey and Nik Airball. It was a tinderbox but some speculated that, in person, the players would adopt a more civil tone. Those thoughts were quickly cast aside when Berkey and Nik Airball clashed during the first orbit.

Airball versus Berkey

Nik Airball is an investment banker and regular in The Hustler Casino Live cash game. He has risen to prominence in the past year for his brash and rambunctious demeanour and, more recently, thanks to an appearance on Doug Polk’s podcast on which he called Berkey a scammer.

“When you run a training site and you can’t beat the games, you’re a scammer. You’re selling bullshit.

It just is what it is, you’re a scam-artist.”

It was spurious reasoning from Nik Airball whose sense of entitlement seemingly extends to the idea that poker players should just drop whatever they are doing and travel to LA to play him when he hollers. The whole incident wreaked of clout-chasing but in the end, Berkey took the bait, albeit under his own revised terms.

Berkey offered to play Airball at the Bellagio at stakes of $200/400 every day for a month. Polk then offered himself as a replacement to which Berkey replied:

“We’ll roll the red carpet out for you to come play full ring you washed up geezer. No one ever has nor ever will duck you in ring games. Stay in your lane.”

The fighting talk continued and after trading several more barbs on podcasts and on Twitter, the two combatants finally decided on a heads-up ‘death-match.’ They also mutually agreed on an arbitrator for future disputes.

Enter Galfond

Run It Once founder Phil Galfond was asked to perform in the unenviable position of arbitrator for the grudge match. One of his first mediations was a potential deal-breaker for Berkey who refused to allow Nik Airball to have his friend Eshaan Bhalla on the rail. Galfond shared to Twitter how the negotiations were going:

After that issue was resolved, Galfond posted that the pair had agreed on a 100-hour match at stakes of $200/$400-$400 with a $100k minimum buy-in. They would play three sessions per week with 6.5 hours per session. Either player can quit if down $1m and there would be a $10,000 penalty for a missed session or quitting early. The match began on April 2 but not before the pair went toe to toe for a bizarre weigh-in of sorts:

Since then, there have been several more disputes over Nik Airball’s egregious break-taking and Berkey exposing hands at showdown. However, all in all, Galfond seems to be keeping the match on track. At the half-way point, Berkey is up $306,800 as the two combatants took their rivalry to a different location and a wider audience.

Shots fired early on High Stakes Poker

PokerGO aired seven hours of poker pantomime but it only took a few minutes to witness a clash between Berkey and Nik Airball. The former set his trap, limping blind versus blind with pocket Aces only to fall into that trap himself when the latter made a flush on the river. A $100,000 stack was shipped to Nik Airball but not quickly enough for his liking:

Although keen to participate in all of the banter going on, Polk who has been helping Nik Airball in his grudge match, was somewhat restrained when it came to Berkey. Polk insisted that he had nothing personal against him but rather his issues stemmed from how Berkey had negatively mischaracterized aspects of his new card club ‘The Lodge.’

For his part, Berkey mostly blanked Polk and the incessant cackling from Nik Airball and Ji. He was very much dialled into the poker, although on a Twitter Spaces after the session, he made it abundantly clear that his issues with Polk are personal, saying: “I really despise him.”

Drinks flowing, pots growing

As the night wore on, the drinks were flowing and the pots were growing. The deck served up some coolers as Tilly lost a few but then took a chunky one off Berkey. Then Yong and later Persson took big ones off Polk. Bellande bled all night until getting lucky with pocket Sixes versus Nik Airball’s pocket Aces in the final orbit.

Doug realized that he might on the wrong side of history

While the chips were certainly flying, it’s fair to say that the real story to emerge was the degeneracy of Nik Airball who was loud and obnoxious, badgering his opponents at every turn. As he got messier, it seemed as if perhaps Doug realized that he might on the wrong side of history:

The session ended on a rather bizarre note with Nik Airball losing an unnecessarily large pot to the always classy Tilly but not before he wasted eight full minutes tanking whether he would call off another $87,000 with a deuce-high flush draw. Throughout the spot, it was unclear whether he had misread his hand or if he was genuinely considering a moment of madness. In any case, the clock was called by a clearly unimpressed Polk and a line was finally drawn under the torrid affair.

Rubbernecking

A few weeks ago, Vanessa Kade said: “Twitter has been such a terrible shit-show this week” and when I saw that I thought ‘what an evergreen tweet.’ The level of discourse has devolved into something more resembling school yard exchanges between people who should know better and it is unclear whether this episode of High Stakes Poker was either an extension of that or a lancing of that boil.

The next morning, Polk expressed the dilemma facing livestream creators as it is undeniable that there were people who enjoyed the stream and people who were repulsed by the stream but rubbernecked it regardless:

In that segment for ‘The Chip Race,’ O’Kearney follows up by saying: “I do my best to dispel the idea that everyone who plays live is an asshole but it’s swimming against the current of all this supposed content.”

My own take is there is probably space for all types of poker streams, including this one, but it was disappointing to see an esteemed show like High Stakes Poker sully it’s brand by embracing the values of ‘The Jerry Springer Show.’ It is sadder still to think that PokerGO believed that they needed to co-opt the professional wrestling model to compete with the likes of Hustler Live.

Final thoughts

In WWE wrestling, the storylines are written and the wrestlers are actors. In that sense, they follow the script and get paid for their performances. In livestream poker, however, the players are risking theirs and sometimes other people’s money while also playing the game within the game. The goal of that secondary game is achieving poker notoriety which can also bring supplementary revenue streams but is also desired by many in and of itself.

everyone involved in today’s high profile poker beefs has something to sell

It cannot be ignored that pretty much everyone involved in today’s high profile poker beefs has something to sell. It also cannot be ignored that the livestream producers also have a product to sell. The issue is whether those objectives run in line with or afoul of the broader goal of selling poker to a wider audience.

For better or worse, this episode of High Stakes Poker has brought eyeballs to poker. The question remains whether it will put bums on cash game seats or if it has just cast us as a bunch of dickish high-schoolers and fame-hungry wannabe reality TV stars with whom nobody would want to spend their recreational time.

Phil Hellmuth Stacked Twice, Once By Airball, and Leaves Hustler Casino Live Game Early

Phil Hellmuth Stacked Twice, Once By Airball, and Leaves Hustler Casino Live Game Early

Friday night was rough for Phil Hellmuth, who bought in short and lost two bullets quickly on Hustler Casino Live (HCL) before watching his beloved Golden State Warriors get knocked out of the NBA Playoffs.

When the stream began at 5 p.m. PT, the “Poker Brat” bought into the $100/$200 no-limit hold’em cash game with $20,000. He was seated at a table with mostly amateurs — all HCL regulars — who were in for at least $100,000, except for Mike X’s $75,000 stack.

Hellmuth’s starting chip stack has been a topic of interest around the poker community the past year. During the historic “MrBeast Game” at Hustler last May, he entered with a small stack against a recreational table, to which many poker fans were critical. Last year, during a Live at the Bike episode, he again bought in for a fraction of his opponents, and again received some criticism.

Following that LATB game and the backlash that came with it, he vowed to enter future live-streams with at least $300,000. He’d stick to that plan for a bit before coming to the conclusion he’s tough to beat when he has a small stack. But on Friday, that statement didn’t hold true.

Hellmuth Loses Monster Pot and Quits During Robbi’s Live at the Bike Debut

Bad Timing Against Nik Airball’s Ladies

One day after competing in the first ever High Stakes Poker live-stream in Las Vegas, Nikhil “Nik Airball” Arcot returned to Los Angeles to play some poker at Hustler Casino. Within the first hour, he found himself in a great spot to stack the 16-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner.

The hand began with Hellmuth raising to $1,100 from a middle position with A9 and then being three-bet to $6,200 by Airball, who had QQ in the straddle. That raise didn’t convince the “Poker Brat” to fold. Instead, he opted to move all-in for $27,600 and was snap-called.

Both players agreed to run it twice and the first board of JJ2710 was especially bad for Hellmuth because he not only didn’t win, but also used up two clubs. The second board of 4K61010 wasn’t any better and Nik Airball collected the $56,600 pot, chipping up to nearly $160,000.

Poker Brat Can’t Find a Fold

In the second and final monster pot Hellmuth played during his brief Hustler Casino Live session, he attempted to sniff out a bluff. The only problem for him was Dan “Jungleman” Cates wasn’t bluffing.

Action began with Cates, in middle position, raising to $1,200 with K6 before Mike X three-bet it to $3,800 with A10 in the cutoff. Hellmuth opted against a four-bet in the straddle with JJ and just called, as did Jungleman.

The flop ran out 56K, giving Jungleman top pair. Despite nearly a complete whiff on the flop, Mike X continued his aggression with a $4,400 wager. Hellmuth called before Cates raised to $15,400.

With just $15,900 behind, Hellmuth was in a position where he could either fold or just play for the rest of his stack. He chose the incorrect option and moved all in to see the bad news. They decided to run it twice and both run-outs were favorable for Jungleman and he took down all of the $56,900 pot.

Phil Hellmuth Loses Big on HCL, Spoils Outcome Early on Twitter

Hellmuth then left the game about two hours into the session instead of rebuying again. In his post-game interview, he admitted he didn’t play at the same level that helped him win 16 WSOP bracelets.

“I put in thirty-thousand with ace-nine of clubs against queens. Just a really bad play. So unlike me.”

“That’s about as bad as I can play poker,” an honest and humble Hellmuth said. “I put in thirty-thousand with ace-nine of clubs against queens. Just a really bad play. So unlike me.”

There was no patented Hellmuth meltdown on this day. He accepted the outcome and moved on to Game 7 of the NBA Western Conference Quarterfinals between the Sacramento Kings and Hellmuth’s favorite team, the Golden State Warriors.

The Warriors played about as well as Hellmuth did and lost the game 118-99. With that, the defending world champs were eliminated from the playoffs about as quickly as the Poker Brat busted on Hustler Casino Live Friday night.

Although the rules of the game are simple, it is its complex gameplay that ranks Go among the hardest games of all time to master. With a vast number of possible moves and outcomes, you must come up with the right strategy and plan multiple moves in advance.

Chess is considered a hard game to master as it comes with an immense number of possible openings and positions of the pieces. This requires players to predict the consequences of each move in advance. Strategic thinking and a deeper understanding of the nuances of the game are key elements to the overall success.

Daniel Negreanu, Eric Persson to Square Off in High Stakes Duel 4

High Stakes Duel 4 banner

PokerGO has announced that Daniel Negreanu will face Eric Persson in High Stakes Duel 4 May 8-9, the first match of the popular heads-up competition since December 2022. In addition, PokerGO has added what it calls an “undercard” match between Shaun Deeb and Mike “The Mouth” Matusow.

a mandatory rematch in Round 2 the next day

The rules of High Stakes Duel have also changed in an apparent attempt to shorten the seasons. Negreanu and Persson will each put up $50,000 in Round 1 on May 8 and then turn around for a mandatory rematch in Round 2 the next day. The winner of Round 1 will risk his $100,000 total prize from the first round in Round 2, while the loser will have to bring their own $100,000.

If one person wins two consecutive matches, it’s over and they are crowned High Stakes Duel 4 champion. If they split the rounds, the loser of Round 2 can request a rematch. PokerGO did not specify the stakes for the third round. Should the Round 2 loser decide against a rematch, they are eliminated and presumably the winner will take on somebody else, but again, PokerGO did not specify. Also unclear is what happens if the Round 2 loser wins Round 3, but that bridge shall be crossed when and if they get there.

The Deeb/Matusow single-round “undercard” match on May 5 has a $10,000 buy-in.

Negreanu last played in High Stakes Duel 2 and was swept in three rounds by Phil Hellmuth. Hellmuth has dominated High Stakes Duel, going 9-2. His last loss came at the hands of Jason Koon in December, when they played for a staggering $800,000 a piece.

As always, the new season of High Stakes Duel will be streamed on PokerGO’s subscription service.
