Lex Veldhuis Helps Himself to a New Year Series Title

Team PokerStars’ Lex Veldhuis is up and running for 2023 after enjoying a brace of victories at PokerStars. Veldhuis came out on top in a $215 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha PKO event that was part of the ongoing New Year Series, and complemented that win by taking down the $109 buy-in Fast 5 PKO event.

New Year Series 84-M: $215 PLO 6-Max PKO drew in 484 entrants, meaning a small overlay on the $100,000 guarantee. With bounties included, everyone at the final table was guaranteed almost $2,000 for their efforts, with a five-figure score locked in for becoming the event’s champion.

Swedish duo “anonymstruts” and “Sasuke234” were the final table’s first casualties before “canabenol” of Ukraine and “lazutina” of Finland bowed out. The final three became two when German grinder “Brummfix” crashed out by the wayside, leaving Veldhuis heads-up against Finland’s “SiiliSuhonen.”

Both heads-up players were now guaranteed at least $7.856 from the main prize pool, leaving the now five-figure final bounty up for grabs. Veldhuis got his hands on the $11,781 final scalp, taking his total haul to $19,637, and resigning his Finnish opponent to an $8,800 consolation prize.

Veldhuis’ other victory came in The Fast 5, a $109 buy-in five-handed turbo PKO. The Belgium-based Dutch star outlasted a field of 66 to reel in a $1,923 prize, which included more than $1,200 worth of bounties.

Bulgarian Binks the $1,050 NLHE 6-Max; Segebrecht Second

Claas Segebrecht
Claas Segebrecht was the event’s runner-up

$1,050 buy-in tournaments are usually jam-packed with online poker’s superstars, and the New Year Series 86-H: $1,050 NLHE 6-Max was no different. Some 326 players piled into the event, creating a $326,000 prize pool that the top 41 finishers shared.

Artur “mararthur” Martirosian was the unfortunate bubble boy. The Russian’s untimely demise opened the door for such luminaries as Pablo “Pabritz” Brito Silva, “Sintoras,” Vlad “dariepoker” Darie, Jans “Graftekkel” Arends, and final table bubble boy David “MissOracle” Yan to see a return on their investments.

Brazil’s “neverstandard” never got going at the seven-handed final table and was the first out of the door. Sixth place went to Will “molswi47” Molson, before “Gobenni,” “12santoy13” and Samuel “€urop€an” Vousden crashed out, the latter seeing $32,379 hit his PokerStars account.

Bulgaria’s “milanov888” took on Claas “SsicK_OnE” Segebrecht heads-up. The heads-up duo did not discuss a deal despite the difference in prize money being a significant $17,000. The lack of a deal meant Segebrecht, who fell at the final hurdle, walked away with $44,472 while the champion secured a bankroll-bosting $61,081.

Stoyan Obreshkov
Stoyan Obreshkov

The PartyPoker Championship (PPC) Winter edition is in full swing over at PartyPoker, and a certain Stoyan Obreshkov gave himself plenty of ammunition for the festival’s run-in. Obreshkov came out on top in The Grand, a $1,050 buy-in affair that saw 103 players take to the PartyPoker virtual felt.

The nine-handed final table was crammed full of top-level poker talent. Preben Stokkan, Leon Sturm, Alex Gelinski De Carvalho, and Team PartyPoker’s Matt Staples all crashed out, leaving the remaining players with a little more elbow room.

Blaz Zerjav and Matthew Stumpf joined the list of busted player, Stumpf being the last player to collect a four-figure sum for his efforts.

Heads-up was set when Jans Arends saw his deep run end in a third-place finish worth $10,468. Arends’ demise left Obreshkov one-on-one against Slovenia’s Jan Strazisar. Obreshkov got the job done and his hands on $23,074, leaving Strazisar to capture the $15,026 second-place prize.

How To Spot Fake Reviews And Phony Products

R. Paul Wilson On: Fake Reviews And Phony Products

It bears repeating that we are all suckers to a great idea, but some ideas are not just too good to be true they’re just plain ridiculous.

And yet, people keep falling for crazy products and ideas.

It’s All A Repeat

Stumbling around the internet, I recently fell into a rabbit hole of devices making ridiculous claims and impossible promises.

One such product was the “TVFix”: A simple, tiny device that when plugged into your TV can activate or unlock hundreds of channels, legally – and for free!

Image: Twitter/EFTM

One assumes they’re using the term “legally” quite loosely.

This tiny-sized piece of plastic was allegedly developed after many years of research at the University of Tokyo where “top scientists” (in white lab coats) invented a way to capture low frequency electronic waves and somehow gain access to hundreds of previously locked TV channels.

Tested by “military engineers” it could unlock streaming content other suckers are dumb enough to pay for!

It even claimed to record shows with “DVR functionality.”

If you’re not already reaching for your wallet, what the hell are you waiting for?

As one excellent scam observer/exposer noted, these online ads are filled with buzzwords and phrases common to scam products like “taking the TV world by storm” which is a psychological motivator borrowed from pitch artists, market sellers and street hawkers.

Nothing about this scam is new, except maybe the bullsh*t product itself but even that is probably stolen from other online hustlers.

Modern Convincers

The age-old snake oil scam would often feature an old or infirm man plucked from the crowd then gifted a snifter of magic brew, which would immediately imbue this “stranger” with energy and be a cure for his obvious ailments.

Subtlety was rarely a factor with the old timer dancing and whooping and claiming he could read the date on a silver dollar from 50 yards.

This now-rejuvenated customer would buy a bottle of whatever the con artist was selling before dashing to the nearest bordello to enjoy his new-found vitality to its fullest.

This obvious display was usually punctuated by a well-worn script between the pitchman and his stooge that never failed to pull a crowd and with enough eyes on the show, never failed to turn a profit.

It might sound hokey, but it worked – and at least it required a little more effort and showmanship that their modern counterparts.

I once watched a fake perfume pitch on London’s Oxford Street where the same four or five people would rush forward at the end of every presentation to buy glossy, plastic wrapped boxes of Kalvin Clein and Bugo Hoss.

No dialogue, no show, just a collection of obviously bored shills in sweatshirts stepping forward at the right moment to provoke real people to hand over their cash.

Modern day pitches are less overt but the tools that they use are just new wine in old bottles.

The TVFix scam employed an online campaign to target people through social media and in order to bolster their wild claims, the perpetrators seeded the internet with articles and “reviews” that would quickly be found by a casual Google search.

Search engine optimization (SEO) can be costly but if your product has a relatively unique name then it’s easy to build websites that flood search engines with tags and references that are bound to come up first.

If the scammers are lucky, legitimate review sites won’t even make the front page of a search and in most cases, people rarely scroll beyond the first few results.

Looking at these poorly written, lie-by-numbers webpages you can find a lot of common phrases collected in a linear fashion that might almost be automatically generated.

In fact, modern software promises to “write content” based on AI engines with enormous search histories.

These faked-up reviews already make for odd reading so God only knows what they might be like when lazy scammers start using artificial intelligence as a substitute for insufficient intelligence.

One easy-to-spot sign of a fake article or review is the author of the article, often a fake name married with a stock photograph, and it can be quite funny to search that photo to find its true source.

I’ve come across a few trustworthy-looking faces that have apparently penned dozens of reviews under multiple pseudonyms.

Impulse Buyers

Of course, none of this is designed to stand up to scrutiny.

All such scams – like rolling pitchmen of the 1900s – are designed to stimulate an impulsive decision to buy.

While the nature of the internet forces modern scammers to add additional layers of fakery for prospective victims to find, even badly written webpages that confirm blatant lies work wonders when trawling for easy money.

All it takes is a basic understanding of how scams work to dig a little deeper.

Did It Work?

The scam worked a lot better than the device itself.

I found several scambaiters who bought one then tested it to find that, shockingly, the little plastic dongle was just a little plastic dongle and when taken apart contained nothing but a couple of wires and connectors that would probably interfere with the quality of your existing television channels.

Yet it’s a compelling example of something that seems feasible enough to warrant an advertising budget, a social media campaign, and a web of lies and made-up reviews.

I wonder how many they sold and what repercussions those sellers might suffer if enough buyers complained or reported the scam to authorities.

Even if there was a price to be paid for this kind of fraud, where are the perpetrators?

Are they in Europe where maybe they might be prosecuted or are they in China where countless thousands of similar scams are poured onto social media every day?

Next time you see something that looks like it might be a scam, do your research but be sure to search known sources of information or genuine review sites where you will doubtless find a lot of genuine, p*ssed off suckers.

Chicken Stone Update

In a previous article on online scams, I confessed to falling for one myself thanks to an extremely well-made promotional video stolen from the people who made the real deal (a cooking gadget called the “Chicken Stone”).

Chicken stone
….remember this one?

Due to several factors including time and alcohol, I didn’t realize it was a rip-off item until my purchase was directed to a company in China instead of the originator in the United States.

Many months later (after submitting that article) the counterfeit version arrived in a cheap cardboard box filled with newspaper but no printed packaging or instructions of any kind.

The item itself looked exactly like the one I saw on the video: A yellow-glazed ceramic container for stock or liquid that can be inserted into a roasting chicken to increase moisture and flavor.

Did it work?

I have no idea.

The chances of me pushing a counterfeit object into something I’m planning to eat remain less than zero and while it might actually be a perfectly safe, working replica of the real thing, I’d rather keep it as a reminder not to buy anything on Facebook in the wee small hours of the morning.

Kambi and Rush Street Extend Betting Technology Deal

Kambi and Rush Street Extend Betting Technology Deal

On Monday, the duo unveiled they extended their sports betting technology collaboration. The partnership extension marked a natural step in the business relationship between RSI and Kambi Group.

RSI to Continue to Benefit from Kambi’s Technology

The sports betting technology deal between Kambi and RSI dates back to 2018. Back then, the duo joined forces just after the repeal of PASPA (the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act), which used to restrict sports betting to Nevada. Following the repeal and the initiated statewide expansion of sports betting, Kambi powered RSI’s entry into 15 different sports betting jurisdictions. States where RSI leveraged Kambi’s leading technology include major markets such as Pennsylvania, Illinois and New York. Moreover, the leading online sports betting and casino company leveraged Kambi’s technology to power its entry outside the US in jurisdictions such as Mexico, Canada and Colombia.

The new announcement comes on the heels of another deal inked between Kambi and Rei do Pitaco, a Brazilian daily fantasy sports operator. By leveraging leading technology from Kambi, the operator is preparing its entry into the sports betting vertical.

The Leading Sports Betting Technology Boosts RSI’s Expansion

Kambi’s CEO and co-founder, Kristian Nylén, shared his excitement about the recent announcement. He pointed out that RSI was the company’s first US-facing partner after the repeal of PASPA.

RSI was the first US-based operator we partnered with post-PASPA, and it has been fantastic to witness RSI become one of the leading online gaming players in the Americas.

Kristian Nylén, CEO and co-founder at Kambi

At the same time, Nylén acknowledged that RSI has grown to a leadership position within the online gaming and sports betting market in the US and beyond. Now, according to him, the extended partnership will help RSI further and continue to bring benefits to the company in the future.

This contract extension ensures Kambi’s sportsbook will continue to complement RSI’s proprietary technology and platform, which together will provide the basis for even greater success in the future,

added Nylén

Thanks to the extended deal, RSI will continue to leverage Kambi’s award-winning sportsbook engine. The solution helps with the operator’s growth and is implemented within its online gaming platform. Thanks to the new deal, RSI will further benefit from the leading solution as it enters emerging markets.

Bidding Officially Opens for Three NY Casino Licenses

Bidding Officially Opens for Three NY Casino Licenses

The New York State Gaming Facility Location Board has officially kicked off the bidding process for three commercial casinos. The winners will be required to pay at least half a billion dollars in licensing fees and that number is a minimum. Without capping the fee, the board set up a potential bidding war for one or more of the licenses.

The board also laid out a tax scheme of 25% on slot machines and 10% on table game action. While some of the scoring and requirements to determine a winner seem clear-cut, according to the board, “Other important components of the Application may depend upon the understanding of the potential competitive landscape with other Applicants, which may only be gauged after these processes have been completed.”

A full 70% of a competitor’s score is supposed to come from a positive economic impact. With that, it’s hard to imagine MGM Resorts’ Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway or Genting’s Resorts World New York at Aqueduct being able to add enough new positions simply by turning electronic table games into dealer/croupier-hosted games. Replacing all of the VLTs (video lottery terminals) at either or both locations with RNG slot machines would also presumably have a counter-balancing negative economic impact as the state would have to forego current VLT revenues in order to collect new taxes. The last argument against allowing true competition for the three new licenses is the potential bidding war that could ensue if they are offered in a competitive bidding process.

Yonkers and Jamaica Queens Each Have One Advantage

The one thing the existing VLT casinos have going for them is built-in community acceptance. A separate Community Advisory Committee (CAC) will be appointed to review the applications.

According to the board, “In addition, the successful completion of municipal zoning and land-use processes will ensure that only projects embraced by the community would be presented to the Board for consideration.”

“Revenue from new gaming facilities is expected to generate substantial fiscal benefit to New York’s public schools, local governments and problem gambling treatment services. The jobs created by these casinos must deliver livable wages to help families live, stay, and prosper in New York.”

While it has been seen as almost a given that Yonkers and Queens VLT casinos would be favored to receive two of the licenses, that’s not necessarily what will happen, especially if the board follows its own mandate. The potential for market cannibalism aside, as it is a mitigatable or at least quantifiable factor, the greatest economic impact could certainly come from allowing the VLTs to continue operating and to award 3 new entities gaming rights in and around the Big Apple.

Hard Rock Might Reenter the Fray

In February 2021 at an awards ceremony for Hard Rock in Atlantic City posting record revenues post-Covid, Jim Allen, chairman of Hard Rock International announced that his company had already identified 3 specific parcels it would consider developing. He noted that the new $500m Hard Rock Hotel in Manhattan was not one of the locations under consideration.

You have to have a footprint of real estate large enough to take advantage of the size of the market,” he said. “We’re extremely proud of our hotel on 48th Street, but its footprint is just not large enough for gaming. As far as other locations, really we’re waiting on the governor and the committee that’s going to be sending out the request for proposals to see what language is in the bill as to geographic locations that would be acceptable to the state.”

Since no geographical locations were forthcoming with the request for applications, the gambling public may well start to hear from Hard Rock again as the competition gets underway.

Times Square, Hudson Yards, Coney Island all on the Table

Caesars Palace Times Square is another hotly contested possibility with passionate advocacy and naysayers. Small shops, actors, hoteliers, and many others promote the idea while many stage owners and some producers are vehemently against a casino on Broadway.

Tom Reeg, CEO of Caesars said: “Caesars is thrilled to partner with SL Green in connection with a five-star project that will meet and exceed New Yorkers’ expectations for world-class entertainment, immediately enhancing New York City’s tourism engine and elevating this one-of-a-kind global destination to new heights. As one of the largest mobile sports books in New York, Caesars is passionate about New York itself. Caesars is also deeply invested in New York-based restaurant groups, chefs, and entertainers from across the Empire State.”

Western Yards at Hudson Yards in New York is another location, this one floated by Related Companies and Wynn Resorts. Craig Billings, CEO of Wynn Resorts said: “Wynn Resorts has a long history of utilizing a compact, upscale casino floor to support the creation of spectacular resort experiences that appeal to an array of guests—travelers and locals alike. We look forward to engaging with the community, learning and understanding what we can do to help New York City to continue to thrive.

And then there is the $3b proposal for a Coney Island casino, as well as other locations covered here and here.

The 2013 referendum and legislation that made a New York City casino possible also mandated a 10-year moratorium on issuing the license. One reason was to let the four Upstate casinos authorized in the bill get their foundations set and clientele established.

As engaging as it was to follow that process from applications to licenses, the downstate tenders look to be much more so.

In seven more years, legislators are authorized by the 2013 referendum to offer 3 more licenses downstate – any additional after that would require a change to the state constitution.

Macau Extends Compliance Period for Electronic Gaming Machines

Macau Extends Compliance Period for Electronic Gaming Machines

Details of the electronic gaming machines (EGM) Technical Standards 2.0 emerged last year. The change sought to introduce rules that ensure the same technical standard for gambling operators, protect the consumers and help with the development of the market.

EGMs Need to Comply with New Rules

Now, a new report by IAG reveals that the deadline for the implementation of the new standard was extended. The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) in Macau decided to extend the period for transition to the new rules by two years. The extension was voted on late last month.

Under the previous proposal, by December 31, 2024, all operators had to be fully compliant with the new Technical Standards 2.0. However, this period was now extended by two years, making the deadline for 100% compliance December 31, 2026.

Besides changing the deadline for full compliance, the DICJ changed the timeline for gradual compliance with the new rules. Initially, by the end of this year, 40% of all EGMs had to be compliant with the new standard. This percentage decreased to 25%, judging by the latest announcement.

On the other hand, by the end of 2024, 50% of the EGMs had to be compliant with the new rules. By 2025, 75% of the EGMs in Macau would need to meet Technical Standard 2.0. Finally, by the end of 2026, all such machines would need to be fully compliant with the new rules.

The New Standard Is Expected to Boost the Sector

Lio Chi Chong, DICJ’s deputy director, acknowledged that the extension of the compliance period comes after a study pointed out that it would help Macau’s gambling sector by boosting its sustainable development and health. Although the DICJ changed the deadline for compliance, it said that there are no further changes to the regulations regarding Technical Standard 2.0.

The latest announcement comes amid hopes for an increase in visitation and consequently revenue in Macau. Only recently, the head of the Government Tourism Office in Macau, Maria Helene de Senna Fernandes, said the SAR hopes to see visitations go up. She predicted that with an increase in traveling and the lifting of COVID-related restrictions, Macau may see up to 40,000 daily average visitors.

However, whether the SAR will see the visitations go up remains unclear. In fact, GGR for the region in 2022 dipped by 50%, making the result the worst in the last decade. Still, gambling operators hope for the best and some have already announced plans to introduce non-gaming amenities in an effort to boost visitor volumes.

Mattress Mack Places Major Bet on Texas College Basketball Team

Mattress Mack Places Major Bet on Texas College Basketball Team

Action Network reported that the Gallery Furniture founder and owner has placed bets of over $3 million with various sportsbooks on the TCU Horned Frogs winning over the Georgia Bulldogs during their match taking place on January 9.

If TCU Delivers Mattress Mack Will Win $8M

Mattress Mack, who is a major Houston furniture magnate, has placed a series of wagers on the TCU Horned Frogs that have not been able to win any title since 1938. Reportedly he put on the team moneyline a bet of $2.13 million. McIngvale also placed $500,000 with Caesars at odds of +400 and $1.5 million with DraftKings at odds of +370. He did another wager of $130,000 with WynnBet with odds of +380.

In a comment for Action Network, Jim McIngvale said: “I woke up and saw Georgia beat Ohio State and then saw the TCU moneyline was like +450 and thought that was crazy.” McIngvale believes that the team has a realistic chance of winning the game given their performance this season.
In case the TCU Horned Frogs are indeed crowned champions, Mattress Mack will receive a payout of about $8 million.

McIngvale usually uses his sports betting activities to leverage various marketing campaigns and promotions at his chain of furniture stores Gallery Furniture. This time if the TCU Horned Frogs win, Gallery Furniture customers that have spent over $3,000 on mattress products at the store up to January 9 when the game takes place, will get the double amount of their purchases back.

In November McIngvale Became the Biggest Sports Bet Winner

Jim McIngvale is an avid gambler and enjoys placing big bets on his favorite Texas sports teams. However, in November he also made history by collecting winnings of $75 million after placing a substantial sum on the baseball team the Houston Astros winning the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Mattress Mack’s winnings made up the biggest payout in the history of sports betting.

In connection with his high-stakes betting endeavors, McIngvale usually offers great promotions to Gallery Furniture customers and also gives money to charity causes. His Houston Astros bet was no different. As the team won, customers that spent over $5,000 on furniture and other products got double the amount back.

However, customers’ pockets were not the only ones influenced by Mattress Mack’s bet in this case. His major payout affected the revenue from mobile sports betting in Louisiana in November. His wager brought the revenue down by 206% in comparison to October, which means that profits from sports betting in the state were down by $27 million month-on-month.

Another Trophy for the Shelf

With over $1.6 million in Hendon Mob-reported live earnings heading into the event, Kachittavong was one of the more experienced players at the final table as he made his return to Atlantic City.

“It feels good,” he told PokerNews after the victory. “I haven’t been playing here very often and I will probably play here more now. My home turf is Foxwoods, I play there a lot, but they don’t have a series going on, just dailies.”

He added, “I don’t travel like these guys. I have two kids. But I do play a lot of tournaments.”

Traveling to The Return series was clearly a good move. Kachittavong started the trip with a deep run in $2,200 Mystery Bounty and now takes home up $70,194 in addition to the more than a dozen $1,000 bounties he picked up along the way.

“I wanted to play again. I’ve been doing well besides Foxwoods … I’ve got like five titles from here (at Borgata), five or six … I’ve got six of these trophies at home.”

Day 2 Action

Day 2 action kicked off with 54 players after the burst of the money bubble at the end of day one. It took only a few hands for World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champ Ryan Riess to fall for a minimum cash of $1,940. The 2013 champ managed to get it in good with ace-king against the ace-queen of Robert McLaughlin, but a queen on the flop and another on the turn send Riess packing.

Ryan Riess

While Riess failed to further advance in the bounty event, another world champion, Joe McKeehen, sits among the chip leaders in $5,300 The Return with two tables remaining.

Simon Levy, who began the day with just three big blinds, managed to build a stack before being eliminated on the final table bubble during hand-for-hand play as his Big Slick couldn’t win a flip against the eights of Nir Cohen. Cohen began the day second in chips and fell in seventh when his ace-seven was dominated by the Fishhooks of Garshofsky.

Mitchell Garshofsky

Next out was Scott Bohlman, who took a painful exit when his king-queen out-flopped the pocket eights of Garshofsky before an eight appeared on the river to send him home in sixth place.

After Bohlman’s exit, the five remaining players decided to look at ICM numbers and liked what they saw. Luckily for Kachittavong, he had recently stolen the chip lead from Garshofsky after winning a big pot with top pair top kicker.

“I played cautiously because he was chip leader at that time and I was second in chips,” Kachittavong said. “And it worked out fine just like that.”
