Damian Green Named DCMS Committee Chair in Knight’s Absence

Damian Green Named DCMS Committee Chair in Knight’s Absence

Damian Green MP will serve as the chairman of the Department of Digital, Culture Media and Sports Committee.

Green to Chair the DCMS Committee

Green will assume the rule in the wake of Julian Knight who recused himself from the Parliament recently. The latter man will meanwhile deal with sexual harassment allegations made against him to the Metropolitan Police.

Knight became the chair of the DCMS committee on January 2020, replacing Damian Collins in the position. Knight will now be temporarily succeeded by Green, who will serve as chair during the former’s absence.

Green is a Conservative MP for Ashford and has served as a member of the Committee since the beginning of the current Parliament. His earlier experiences include tenures as first secretary of state and minister for the cabinet office. He has also worked as а work and pensions secretary and has all the experience needed to lead the DCMS Committee.

Green: 2023 Will Bring Major Policy Challenges

Green spoke about his appointment and the important role of the DCMS in British politics in 2023. The committee is currently overseeing several inquiries, which, according to Green, will “bring some major policy challenges in the world of DCMS.”

The new chair listed a few of the important entries on DCMS’ agenda:

This year will undoubtedly bring with it some major policy challenges in the world of DCMS, with online safety, the future of public service broadcasting, sports governance and gambling all likely to feature high up on the agenda.

Damian Green MP

Green concluded that the DCMS Committee will continue working hard to “ask the right questions” and “scrutinize the approach and decisions of the Government and other bodies.”

The White Paper Is Set to Be Published in February

The DCMS Committee is comprised of members of various political groups. Its current iteration fields six Conservative members, three Labour Party members and two independents.

The body is of crucial importance to the ongoing Gambling Act review. The committee has been tasked with overseeing the inquiry and making sure that the new laws are in line with the modern age.

Unfortunately, the release of the notorious white paper was postponed multiple times in 2022, causing disgruntlement among both pro-gambling and anti-gambling parties. However, the review is now almost finished, according to the government, which makes Green’s role important to the industry.

The white paper will likely be published in February this year. Some are concerned about the outcome of the review. For example, John Stellar MP recently expressed his worries about the future of gambling, saying that the United Kingdom must protect the industry.

It’s Not Good News – Gambling With An Edge

Putting Bills Into a Machine

Not so long ago, I received an email from Anthony Curtis directing my attention to https://acresmanufacturing.com/optimal-poker-analyzer/ . It’s an advertisement for a product that casinos can use to evaluate the accuracy of the video poker players at their casino.

Generally speaking, casinos want to reward players based on their true worth to the casino — that is, pay losing players a lot to keep losing, pay good players a little but not too much, and find and eliminate winning players. Also generally speaking, strong players want to disguise what they’re doing so they can keep their welcome and continue to gather their profits.

Not-so-strong video poker players (who realize they are not winning players and likely never will be) should be perfectly fine with being evaluated. They will reap more benefits!

I’ve assumed that this kind of product has been available to casinos for years. Players have been using WinPoker, Video Poker for Winners, Wolf Video Poker, and others for decades which provide this type of information presented in far more user-friendly ways that what is shown in this ad.

Still, the threat is real. If casinos accurately crack down on strong video poker players more than they are already doing, it’s more bad news for a lot of us — who’ve seen video poker playing conditions continually worsen over the past few decades.

I got to thinking how software “outing” blackjack counters is similar and different to software used to out video poker players.

Consider this hand in 9/6 Jacks or Better:  A♥ K♥ T♥ T♣ 4♥. The correct play, of course, is AKT4, but I imagine more than 95% of players play AKT. The size of the error is very small, the hand is very rare, so it adds up to being worth “almost nothing” overall.

Now consider this blackjack hand, where you’re betting $100 a hand. You’re dealt 8♠ 4♦ and the dealer shows 2♣. The correct basic strategy play (i.e., ignoring the count) is to hit the hard twelve. Some clever players double down for less — that is, put a red chip (i.e., $5) next to their black one and ask for one card only.

Why do they do this? Casino software evaluating blackjack players only check whether they are doubling or not — not the size of the double. A full-sized double would be a huge error. But since the player is only going to be taking one card, whatever it is, and they’re only a very small underdog hitting a twelve versus a dealer two, at a small fraction of their original bet, if a player can trick the casino’s software into thinking they’re a bad player, it’s worth far more than their expected loss on that small bet.

Arnold Snyder discussed this situation in his Radical Blackjack book. It’s also been discussed more than once by guests on Gambling with an Edge prior to Snyder publishing it.

The two examples cost the players approximately the same percentage-wise. But for purposes of camouflage to preserve a player’s welcome, they are very different.

Consider: In video poker, most players make the wrong play on this hand anyway. This play alone won’t identify a player as a bad one. Plus, video poker software can evaluate the size of the error. It will correctly evaluate this one as very small.

Finally, a basic strategy 9/6 Jacks or Better player plays at perhaps 99.535% while a perfect player plays at 99.544%. For a casino’s bottom line, these are essentially identical. With the mixture of slot club, comps, mailers, etc., it’s not going to be the case that a casino welcomes the first player and bans the second.

But it’s different in this blackjack example. First of all, a significant number of players (I’m guessing 30%?) know the correct play is to hit the twelve and the other 70% stand on the hand. Nobody with a clue doubles for full value on the twelve versus a two. The computer flags this as a major error. Which is good for the player if he’s actually doubling for much less. This player wants to look like a doofus in order to be allowed to continue playing.

Second, in blackjack, this is not such a rare hand. I’ll let somebody else look up or figure out its exact frequency, but it will happen several times a session.

The final difference between the games concerns the conditions surrounding the game that are so important. Video poker players look at the slot club, promotions, and mailers to determine whether or not they have the edge. Blackjack players look primarily to penetration (i.e., how many cards are dealt before the re-shuffle), the dealer errors, and the willingness of casinos to let players play. Computer software doesn’t address any of these things.

So, whether or not casinos use computer software to help them identify and eliminate strong players, my prediction is the best players will continue to find ways to extract money from casinos. Sadly, the more casinos have and use accurate information concerning how well a player plays, the harder it will be to find those ways to win.

Catena Media Names Carnegie Investment Bank AB as Financial Advisor

Catena Media Names Carnegie Investment Bank AB as Financial Advisor

The group that offers securities brokerage, investment banking, and private banking services will pay attention to all options regarding strategic transactions and public tender offers that the group has received. While Catena Media has not yet received a firm bid for its business or assets, the affiliate did agree to sell AskGamblers to the Gaming Innovation Group in exchange for €45 million ($48.3 million) in December 2022.

All Eyes on Strategic Transactions and Public Tender Offers

Discussing the sale, Catena Media’s chief executive officer referred to it as a “major step” part of their journey with a focus on “online sports betting and casino affiliation” in well-developed, popular markets in North and South America. He also added that GiG has the potential of nurturing and growing a solid environment for AskGamblers as well as the other brands included in the same deal.

The decision was made at the end of the strategic review initiated in May 2022 during which Catena Media took the possibility of the sale under consideration. An extension of the same review was announced later on, in August, allowing the company to decide if it should divest its European betting and online gaming assets and instead focus on markets in North America. Catena announced that a quarter of all of its staff in Europe had been laid off as a result of the review.

Expansion in US Markets

As part of its expansion plans in the regulated gambling market in the US, Catena Media announced its plans to launch sports betting in Kansas in August. Speaking about the launch, Catena Media’s vice president for content in North America, Dustin Gouker, expressed their great expectations regarding the launch while speaking about the “strong portfolio of national and regional sites”. According to Gouker, this portfolio would put the company in a good position in the context of the anticipated customer acquisition period following the launch of the sports betting market.

The leading generator of high-value leads for online casino operators, as well as financial and sports betting platforms has a rich portfolio packed with affiliation brands. The portfolio is used to direct online users to the best custom websites while improving their gaming experiences. At the moment, Catena Media has its headquarters in Malta and it is run with a staff made of 450 people located in North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia-Pacific.

New Campaign in Kentucky Calls for Regulation of Skill Games

New Campaign in Kentucky Calls for Regulation of Skill Games

The campaign was launched by the Kentucky Merchants and Amusement Coalition (KY MAC), an organization that represents the interests of small businesses such as bars, clubs, lodges and restaurants in the state.

KY MAC Calls for Additional Regulation of Skill Games

Currently, KY MAC represents more than 250 businesses that help by delivering economic stimulus and creating jobs. Under the new campaign, the organization urges lawmakers to implement changes to the legislation to better regulate skill games.

KY MAC calls for changes and additional regulations in an effort to protect such games which represent an invaluable revenue stream for small businesses. At the same time, the campaign calls for a further crackdown on illegal gambling activities in Kentucky.

The latest campaign, details of which emerged last week, will include digital advertisements, as well as radio spots. According to KY MAC, those efforts will help highlight the problem created by illegal gambling and urge for the additional regulation of skill games offered by small businesses.

The organization said that illegal gambling brings harm to communities and business owners. What’s more, KY MAC warned that money spent on illegal gambling does not stay in Kentucky and such operations “jeopardize the success of legitimate establishments.”

Tim Crisante, KY MAC’s secretary, explained that skill games deliver extra income for many small businesses in Kentucky. “Similar to pool and darts, skill games offer entertainment to patrons who stay longer, enjoy food and beverages, and spend additional dollars as these establishments,” he said. Finally, Crisante reiterated the support for the regulation of skill games and efforts against illegal gambling operations.

Although Kentucky doesn’t allow gambling such as luck-based games, this isn’t the case for skill-based games. This specific type of game does not fall under the current regulation, enabling businesses to provide such a form of entertainment.

KY MAC is working closely with Kentucky lawmakers to pass legislation that would not only eliminate unregulated gaming operations but also generate additional tax revenue for the state from legal skill games.

Wes Jackson, president of the KY MAC

Wes Jackson, KY MAC’s president, added that the organization continues to collaborate with lawmakers in the state urging them for legislative changes that will help skill games generate more taxes and crack down on illegal gambling activities. Last but not least, he pointed out that skill games deliver entertainment and boost the revenues of local businesses.

Jennifer Shahade Awards PokerStars Platinum Pass to Matt Glassman

Jennifer Shahade Awards PokerStars Platinum Pass to Matt Glassman

The return of the PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC) in the Bahamas is less than a month away, and yet another lucky poker player has earned a free ticket into the $25,000 buy-in tournament.

Matt Glassman, via a contest hosted by chess star and PokerStars ambassador Jennifer Shahade, claimed a coveted Platinum Pass valued at $30,000, which includes free entry into the event and travel expenses to the Bahamas.

How He Won the Platinum Pass

In 2019, PokerStars introduced the inaugural PSPC, a unique tournament because hundreds of regular poker players have an opportunity to compete in a high roller. This year, one of those players will be Glassman, who beat out 70 contestants with his “Monster Ballads Poker Game” blog post in which he creatively told a story about his old home games.

“I was blown away by the quality of the submissions and finalists and am thrilled by Matt’s victory,” Shahade said of Glassman’s win. “His beautiful rendition of the home game of his 20s reminded me of my favorite thing about poker, the way it unites people on different paths, and at different stages of life, through a shared passion.”

She continued: “It also reminded me of the privilege of poker- to play for years with people we love shouldn’t be taken for granted. As Matt points out, “You never know when a poker game is going to fall apart. People move. People get busy. The game goes less and less often. And then it’s just gone.”

That creativity will send Glassman to the Bahamas for the 2023 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA). More specifically, the $25,000 PSPC, where he will compete for an opportunity to win millions. Ramon Colillas was the 2019 PSPC winner, beating out 1,039 players for $5.1 million.

jennifer shahade

Shahade hosted the competition, asking for video and blog submissions from poker players sharing interesting poker stories. A panel of judges, which included Maria Ho and Sam Grafton, then voted on the six finalists.

“All the finalists were spectacular,” Ho said in a press release. “I thoroughly enjoyed reading/watching them all. Very tough to choose among them, but happy to be a part of making someone’s poker dream come true.”

According to Glassman’s Twitter, he lives in Virginia and is heavily invested in politics. He also has a separate Twitter account in which he uses for poker-related discussion. Starting Jan. 30, his focus will be on winning life-changing money in the Bahamas.

Recapping First PSPC

Glassman will have an opportunity to become the next Ramon Colillas, who turned his Platinum Pass into life-changing money and his first ever major poker tournament title in 2019.

The PSPC was set to return in 2020 but was canceled due to COVID-19. Colillas beat out Julien Martini, one of the top French pros, heads up to win the tournament. He now ranks fifth on Spain’s all-time money list with $6.2 million in cashes, according to Hendon Mob. Adrian Mateos, one of the best players in the world, holds a commanding lead at over $29 million.

Platinum Passes have been awarded to players all around the world via PokerStars live and online tournaments and various contests such as the one Shahade hosted.

Shahade awarded Roxanne Johnson with a Platinum Pass at EPT Prague last month by winning a female-only poker Boot Camp.

The Chelsea Football Club signs 2 additional players early on during the Transfer Window

The Chelsea Football Club signs 2 additional players early on during the Transfer Window

The Chelsea football club’s 2nd – transfer window under their new American ownership is demonstrating to be as extremely busy just like their 1st – transfer window.

On Saturday, January 7th, 2023 Chelsea managed to sign 2 – more great football players that includes the Ivory Coast forward in David Datro Fofana as well as the 18 – year – old Brazilian midfielder in Andrey Santos. These moves come only a couple of days after Chelsea purchased the French defender in Benoît Badiashile on Thursday, January 5th, 2023.

David Datro Fofana

The now 20 – year – old, Fofana, signed with the Chelsea football club for a 6 and a ½ – year contract following him coming from the Norwegian champion, Molde, where Fofana managed to compile 24 – goal scores to go along with his 10 – assists over the course of his 65 – games with Molde.

“Hello dear fans, I’m here, I’ve arrived well and I’m very happy to sign for the club of my dreams,” David Datro Fofana explained.

Andrey Santos

Santos, who has recently been represented by Brazil at the under-20 level looks like he might be one of the best up and coming football players for the future following him signing from Brazilian football club in Vasco da Gama.

“It’s a very big opportunity for me,” the Brazilian midfielder, Andrey Santos, who is just recently coming off of a first as well as only season as a regular player on Vasco da Gama’s club, revealed. “This is a big club playing in big competitions like the Premier League so I am very excited.”

Chelsea Spending Big under their new American Ownership

Chelsea did not publicly reveal the individual amount of money that they spent on Fofana as well as Santos, but the powerhouse English Premier League club reportedly paid approximately up to 25 million pounds or $30 million combined for the 2 – young star players. That is obviously in addition to the reported 34 million pounds or $40 million that Chelsea dropped to sign Badiashile.

Not too long ago the Chelsea football club experienced a change in ownership which took place at the end of the previous professional football season, with Roman Abramovich’s 19 – year reign as the owner of Chelsea concluded and a group which was led by the American businessman in Todd Boehly, a part – owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who purchased the Chelsea football club for 2.5 billion pounds which at that time was around $3.2 billion.

During the previous summer transfer window, Chelsea spent somewhere near $300 million on new players which was a record amount by any English football club. They were able to acquire the likes of the uncapped French center back in Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, and Raheem Sterling who all joined Chelsea for huge sums of money. Now we will see if all that big spending will pay off once club play resumes sometime soon.

Greentube added that the tech stack is supported by a robust microservices platform that provides a secure, reliable, robust and scalable framework. The platform also comes equipped with masterfully-designed tool support.

Mynt Can Revolutionize iGaming

Greentube is certain that Mynt has the potential to revolutionize the gaming market and usher in a new era of gamification. The company now plans to double down on its growth efforts and target more regulated markets.

Greentube’s chief games officer and chief financial officer, Michael Bauer, spoke about the launch of Greentube Mynt. He promised that the innovative tech stack will be “a true game-changer” for gaming companies all over the world.

This is only the start for the platform and we will be constantly improving it with fresh features that will further enhance the offering and improve returns for all stakeholders. We are working closely with our partners to offer the platform’s best-of-class services to as many of them as soon as it is possible.
