PokerNews 2023 Predictions – What Does the Year Have in Store?

We’re a few weeks late to the party as January is already nearing its home stretch, but nonetheless, we wanted to keep the annual tradition alive of PokerNews offering predictions for the New Year!

We asked PokerNews expert Matt Hansen to make some bold predictions for 2023! Without further adieu, here is what he had to say…

After a wild 2022 that featured the spot-on prediction of Jungleman’s second straight Poker Player’s Championship victory, it’s time once again to use my powers of clairvoyance and look into the future to tell you exactly what’s going to happen in 2023.

Prediction #1: Jungleman will NOT win a third straight Poker Player’s Championship

Dan “Jungleman” Cates went back-to-back for his second WSOP bracelet with a win in the 2022 PPC, but it’s just too unlikely for him to win a third time. Cates will likely wear something outrageous, and he will still be the center of attention, but his run will be cut short by the 2023 PPC champion: Ryan Leng.

Leng won a bracelet in the 2021 edition of the $1,500 8-game tournament, so he knows his way around the different variants. Later that series, he was runner-up to Cates in his first PPC win. He has three bracelets and several deep runs in different WSOP tournaments, which makes Leng a top pick to win against a very tough field.

Prediction #2: Mid-major expansion and a new tour in 2023

Events all over the world took a cautious approach when the industry emerged from COVID in 2021, but 2022 was an opportunity for everything to get back to normal.

Mid-major tours like RunGood Poker Series and Mid-States Poker Tour had big comeback years, and both were able to bounce back from the pandemic with an opportunity to expand their schedules.

2023 will be the year of risk-taking and adventure for poker operators. The lessons have been learned and the ideas have been percolating, so it’s time to swing for a few home runs. The expectation is that current tours, both big and mid-sized, will get much bigger this year with so many casinos across the country competing to get people in the door.

Larger operators will put on big events in markets that are new to poker—and I predict that at least one new U.S.-based tour will dip its toe in the scene in 2023. The industry got back to speed in 2022 and stakeholders all over the world will want to keep that going.

Prediction #3: An American will win a PokerStars European Poker Tour Main Event on European soil

While Americans have won major PokerStars events all over the world, most recently David “Chino” Rheem at the 2019 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, it’s been a while since a U.S. player has crossed the pond and taken down an EPT Main Event.

The EPT returned in 2022 with two record-setting trips to Prague and stops in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, and London. This year will take the tour to new stops in Paris and Cyprus, while Monte Carlo, Barcelona, and Prague remain in the rotation. Conflicts with large stateside tournaments can prevent a large contingency of Americans from making the trip, and COVID restrictions have complicated international travel, but I don’t see that as much of a problem in 2023 with players having the opportunity to create a schedule without as many obstacles. Events like Prague and Monte Carlo occurred during a time when travel restrictions were still in place, and most of them have been lifted at this point.

The last American to win an EPT on European soil was Stephen Graner at EPT Prague in 2014, and the next one will probably be Steve O’Dwyer—who won in Monte Carlo in 2013. A sneaky backup pick is Jason Wheeler, an EPT regular and WSOP bracelet winner that ran to 19th in the 2022 Monte Carlo Main Event.

Prediction #4: Shaun Deeb will win his second WSOP Player of the Year

Deeb cashed 17 times in the 2022 WSOP but he couldn’t catch Daniel Zack on the leaderboard for the Player of the Year title. His success continued at WSOP Europe, where he cashed seven times with three third-place finishes, one of which was a deep run in the Main Event.

Deeb puts in the volume, and it’s no secret that he wants to sneak up on Phil Hellmuth’s bracelet total, so he’s a good bet to have a great year most of the time. In 2018 he won twice and cashed 20 times en route to a Player of the Year title, and 2023 will look a lot like that.

Prediction #5: A new Triple Crown winner

Only nine players have won a World Series of Poker bracelet, a World Poker Tour Main Event, and a European Poker Tour Main Event in their career, and 2023 will be the year that introduces a 10th. Several active players are just one away, and it’s a matter of time before this category swells.

Players that need just a WSOP bracelet include Mike Watson and David “Chino” Rheem, while Hossein Ensan, Jason Mercier, Adrian Mateos and Ognyan Dimov are among many that need to win on the World Poker Tour. The EPT Main Event title is the most rare, but players like Nick Petrangelo, Alex Foxen, and Ole Schemion can pick up a Triple Crown with a win on the PokerStars tour.

The most recent member of the Triple Crown Club was Roberto Romanello, who added a WSOP bracelet in the 2020 online series to his Main Event wins at EPT Prague in 2010 and WPT Bratislava in 2011.

The official prediction for 2023 is that Watson will win his first bracelet at Horseshoe Las Vegas this Summer. He came very close with a runner-up finish against Simeon Spasov in the $2,000 event in 2022, and he has made several deep runs in the online bracelet events. It’s only a matter of time before he becomes poker’s next Triple Crown winner.

PAGCOR Under Pressure for Working with Unlicensed Tax Auditor

In 2017, PAGCOR gave Global ComRCI a consultancy agreement worth PHP 26 billion ($477 million) for monitoring the revenues of licensed Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and ensuring that they were paying the appropriate amount of tax. However, it has recently been exposed that Global ComRCI is not registered in the Philippines and did not present accurate documentation in its proposal.

Calls for Investigation into PAGCOR’s Allocation Procedure

The problem of PAGCOR awarding the contract to Global ComRCI was brought to light by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, during a hearing exploring the advantages and disadvantages of the POGO industry.

Previous hearings have revealed the loss of PHP 9.1 billion ($166 million) in POGO taxes due to substantial differences in industry gross gaming revenue (GGR) figures between PAGCOR, the Bureau of Internal Revenues, and the POGOs themselves.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Global ComRCI collaborated with a bank that is also unlicensed in the Philippines, Soleil Chartered Bank (SBC), to prove that it met PAGCOR’s capital requirements.

This revelation has raised significant concerns and has prompted calls for an investigation into PAGCOR’s allocation process, as well as for stricter regulations to be put in place to ensure that proper due diligence is conducted when allocating contracts of this nature. The incident has also raised questions about the broader POGO industry and its ability to self-regulate and comply with tax laws.

Gatchalian Criticizes PAGCOR’s Effectiveness

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian raised concerns about PAGCOR’s effectiveness in enforcing laws and regulations on POGOs. He specifically highlighted the cases of two companies, Brickhartz Technology Inc and MOA Cloudzone Corp, that have been implicated in kidnappings but continue to operate. Despite Brickhartz being fined, PAGCOR has yet to receive a report on the actions taken against MOA Cloudzone Corp.

Gatchalian expressed doubt about PAGCOR’s ability to handle crimes with urgency and effectiveness, arguing that leniency and a conflict of interest may be at play. He has called for POGOs to be banned, stating that they pose more risks than benefits. However, Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr has stated that it is unlicensed operators that are breaching local laws.

This is not the first time Gatchalian is breathing down PAGCOR’s neck. In November, the senator called for the restructuring of PAGCOR. Gatchalian argued that the current model of operation poses a conflict of interests, as PAGCOR both manages and regulates gambling activities in the country.

Currently, PAGCOR owns and runs nine casinos and operates 32 satellite casinos in the Philippines, while at the same time acting as the gambling regulator in the country.

Malta Gaming Authority Looks into ESG Code for the Online Sector

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) is determined to explore the idea of developing a voluntary Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Code of Good Practice. This comes as a result of the upcoming requirement for listed companies to comply with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) starting in 2024.

MGA: Determined to Add More Transparency and Sustainability to the Sector

The CSRD is aimed at ensuring that gaming companies transparently disclose all relevant information regarding the risks, opportunities, and impacts of their activities on society and the environment. MGA’s announcement regarding the code of good practice comes after the authority published its amendments to its Player Protection Directive at the start of the year.

The new code would serve the needs of licensed operators in the online gaming industry preparing for the upcoming ESG legislation, in a desire to also potentially derive the perks connected to managing a “sustainably conscious operation.”

The fresh code will establish the common priorities for ESG in the industry while considering the exact requirements of key stakeholders to cut their impact on society and the environment. All this will be done while improving Malta’s reputation as a premier jurisdiction for gamblers. As part of MGA’s initiative, the authority has also released a survey with all licensees who are crucial in the process of turning the gaming industry into a much more transparent and sustainable sector.

The Birth of the ESG reporting Platform

The continuously growing awareness in regard to ESG-related topics has been triggered by a large number of investors, consumers, and employees who started to understand the full impact of gambling companies on both the environment and society.

This convinced Maltese government officials to create and launch a dedicated voluntary ESG reporting platform. The platform is meant to stimulate companies to make their ESG performance known to the public in an attempt to attract more investments in growing sustainable businesses.

While the MGA has expressed its content regarding the “consistent progress of the gaming sector” and acknowledged the excellent work done by reporting licensees using the ESG platform, the authority feels that more needs to be done for operators to stay at the forefront of innovation.

The MGA expressed its confidence in a larger number of gaming companies “taking concrete actions towards becoming more sustainable.” The authority feels that by choosing to report their efforts, companies will bring positive changes in the sector and help improve the overall perception of the public.

Last September, MGA released its regular annual report, reflecting on a troubled and eventful fiscal year while acknowledging the gambling sector’s ability to record substantial growth.

MGA’s chief executive officer Dr. Carl Brincat explained the organization managed to successfully navigate all challenges while coming out stronger and more robust.

Do Not Make These Five Common PLO Mistakes

Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) is one of the most fun poker variants you can play online. You make big hands far more regularly than in No Limit Hold’em, the pots grow larger and do so faster, and the less experienced PLO players make the same mistakes over and over again, leading to PLO being potentially very lucrative indeed.

Most PLO mistakes can be prevented preflop. Think of the preflop stage of PLO as building the foundations of a house. Start from a solid base and you have a platform from which to build. However, get it wrong, and you’re on shaky ground where your house, read that as bankroll, can come toppling down at any moment.

Those who frequent No Limit Hold’em games know there are 1,326 possible starting hands. PLO has 270,725 possible starting hands, so it is easy to see why preflop mistakes are more common in PLO games. With that in mind, let’s start with a common preflop PLO mistake.

#1 Common PLO Mistakes – Playing too many hands that have unconnected or low cards

Receiving four hole cards gives PLO players plenty of freedom when it comes to starting hand selection; remember that you must use exactly two of your hole cards to make the best five-card poker hand possible. Ideally, you want your hole cards to be connected and/or be drawing to the nuts.

For example, a hand such as is a powerhouse hand preflop. It is double-suited for a start, and you can easily see you are drawing to the nuts. A hand such as looks pretty to a Hold’em player but can get you into a lot of trouble. Similarly, even though can make the nut spade flush, it is a hand that you should toss into the muck for the most part.

#2 Common PLO Mistakes – Over-valuing small pairs and low rundowns

Players new to the nuances of PLO often over-value the strength of small pairs. They think hitting a set with a hand like gives them a significant advantage but it does not in reality. Low sets are often dominated by superior sets in PLO, plus many boards will have potential flushes and straights that make continuing with a small set challenging.

Using the hand above as an example, you are unlikely to have any backdoor draws to help you if your opponent shows any signs of strength after the flop. Imagine the flop comes down . You have bottom set, but anyone playing with a pair of tens or aces in the hole, or a hand like or has you in a whole world of pain.

It is a similar story with low rundowns. By this, we mean hands such as . They look great and have some potential. However, any hand you make is likely to be at the lower end of the scale. Improving to a flush or straight leaves you vulnerable to stronger flushes and straights.

#3 Common PLO Mistakes – Slow-plying too frequently, especially in multi-way pots

Slow-playing a strong hand is a common tactic in No Limit Hold’em games but it can be deadly in PLO where you are in danger of being outdrawn. This danger amplifies whenever pots are contested with two or more opponents.

Improving to trips with on a flop in Hold’em would be a great spot to slow-play your hand. But what if you hit the same flop with ? Although you should be aware that the turn or river could improve an opponent to a better full house, you are more likely to have an opponent drawing to a flush or straight, or that has a hand with in it. Even someone holding a hand like is a two-to-one underdog, which is usually as good as it gets in PLO.

Don’t slow-play your hands. Either bet to protect your hand or bet to increase the pot size and maximize the value from players with strong yet inferior holdings.

#4 – Common PLO Mistakes – Playing out of position

Position is king in all flop games, but especially so in PLO. Limping in with mediocre hands from early position is not recommended, and neither is calling three bets from out of position. The power of position is tremendous in PLO and you should use it to your advantage, not allow it to become a disadvantage at the tables.

Limping from early position and then calling a raise is a recipe for bleeding away chips. Not only are you playing in a bloated pot but are doing so against an opponent that can see how you act and adapt accordingly.

#5 – Common PLO Mistakes – Playing short-stacked

Some players like to sit down with a short stack when they are learning a new game. They are told that mistakes made while deep stacked are more costly than if they are playing short. While this is true, playing short-stacked in PLO cash games is not advised.

First, your lack of chips means you are essentially unable to bluff or able to force opponents to fold their equity. Also, pots grow large fast in PLO, so you will often find yourself pot-committed with easily dominated hands, which tends to end badly.

ICE Consumer Protection Zone on Track to Hit Fund-Raising Target

The target is just £6,000 shy of the expected sum, and a number of prominent companies participated in the backing of the zone, designed to spread awareness about problem gambling and how businesses stand to benefit from tackling the issue on an industry level.

UFC president Dana White has been under the microscope since unveiling the controversial slap-fighting league “Power Slap” last week.

As brutal of a league as it is, Power Slap has nothing on a few other fighting federations across the globe. We’re talking team street fighting, 530-pound men versus female strawweights, and gruesome grappling in the front seat of a car.

Buckle up (pun intended), as here’s our list of three fighting leagues just as wild as Dana White’s Power Slap.

Team Fighting Championships

The UFC is the gold standard for combat sports in America. On top of the pre-fight extravagance, assembly of talented combatants, and competitive ranking system, it has a solid ruleset that both protects fighters and encourages brutality, thus creating the perfect blend for fighting enthusiasts.

If for some reason you were to remove all of the rules from the UFC, you would be left with Poland’s Team Fighting Championships (TFC). Think teams of five men in an expanded ring surrounded by ropes and car tires and you’ve pretty much got the full picture.

TFC took the internet by storm in 2014 and has delivered nonstop blows ever since. A 2021 event known as “The War 3” perfectly captured the raw emotion of the sport with its name alone.

The rules are simple and limited: no strikes to the adam’s apple or groin, and no biting or spitting. Everything else goes.

Epic Fighting Championship

Not a fan of vicious and bloody team-fighting in a makeshift battle ring? Understandable. But you’ll love Russia’s Epic Fighting Championship (EFC).

This crazy fighting federation comes up with ideas that would leave even WWE chairman Vince McMahon blown away. Last year, 530-pound man Grigory Chistyakov stepped into the ring with 110-pound woman Aleksandra Stepakova for what can only be described as the mismatch of the century.

At one point, a member of the crowd even entered the ring and gave the giant man a kick in the back as he had his female opponent trapped against the octagon wall.

A few days before that fight, a 75-year-old man with head-to-toe tattoos and his 18-year-old grandson took on female fighter Yulia Mishko. Despite being outnumbered, Mishko walked out of the ring with a victory and a few bumps and bruises.

It comes as little surprise that Russia is the country responsible for conjuring storylines as crazy as these. Perhaps the EFC hierarchy has a future in Hollywood because nobody else could have come up with such ridiculous matchups.

Car-Jitsu

Looking for a more creative and less brutal form of fighting? Well, we don’t have the “less brutal,” but we certainly have the creative.

Have you ever watched an action thriller where the protagonist gets caught in a situation where they have to fend off an attacker while driving a car at high speed? I’m sure Tom Cruise has filmed this scene hundreds of times.

The next sport on our list, called “Car-Jitsu,” brings that to life. It combines the grappling of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the venue of a car and voila, Car-Jitsu.

Participants start by sitting in the front seat of a car. Once the fight starts, they begin wrestling with each other and take full advantage of their surroundings. The idea came from Russian Vik Mikheev, a BJJ and judo black belt who has a popular YouTube channel. He wants to grow the sport even further beyond the confines of his home country.

“In 2020, I came up with the idea of doing competitive grappling in vehicles,” said Mikheev. “Since October of 2020, I and my friends run small tournaments of Car Jitsu to study the aspects of jiu-jitsu application in such a confined space.”

Los Blancos Look Incredible on Home Turf

April 4, 2022 – that’s when Real Madrid lost a competitive game on home turf the last time. Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is their fortress, where they usually destroy the opposition. They defeated Atletico Madrid in each of the previous three Madrid Derbies that took place at this stadium, keeping a clean sheet each time.

They’re expected to do well at home in the Copa del Rey game as well. On Thursday, only 334 of 81,044 available tickets will go to Atletico fans. All the rest will be cheering for Los Blancos.

This isn’t the only good news for Carlo Ancelotti’s men ahead of the Copa del Rey quarterfinal. They’re going to get more help on the pitch as several of their key players are coming back from an injury. David Alaba, Danny Carvajal, Eden Hazard, and Aurelien Tchouameni are all expected to be fit for Thursday’s game.

Atletico Madrid Don’t Do Great in Big Matches in 2022-23

Atletico Madrid are doing okay in 2022-23 La Liga, where they’re fourth in the standings. They also got themselves to the quarterfinal of the Copa del Rey, which definitely is a good result. Still, the fact is that they just haven’t done much against big teams such as Real Madrid.

Adrian Garcia Wins 888poker LIVE Madrid Main Event (€92,000)

It was built on a moment of great fortune — but then again, what poker victories aren’t?

When one of the more active players in the tournament shoved and Adrian Garcia looked down at pocket aces, he must have thought that it was his day. And so it was. Garcia topped a 514-entry field to win the 2023 888poker LIVE Madrid Main Event for €92,000

He defeated Oleg Bystrenin heads-up at the Casino Gran Via. Meanwhile, it was also a case of so close and yet so far for 888poker Stream Team member Ricardo Mateus and 888poker Ambassador Lucia Navarro, who finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

Day 3 Recap

The day began with 39 players and four 888poker team members, one of which — Alexandre Mantovani — would double on the very first hand. Another int he shape of Josh Manley would run tens into jacks and pocket a €2,000 cash for his 35th place finish.

Start-of-day chip leader Nicolae Suciu still held onto the lead with three tables remaining. However, the chip lead was wrenched from his hands by Tom Orpaz, who flopped Suciu dead to soar into the lead.

Mantovani would subsequently be eliminated (20th place – €2,800) along with Suciu (19th – €2,800), with Orpaz holding more than double the next player with 18 players left.

However, the chip lead would once again change hands in spectacular fashion as Oleg Bystrenin (pictured) picked up aces to beat the kings of Orpaz, and the ace-king of Victor Caballero and replace Orpaz atop the chip counts.

And by the time the final table was reached, Bystrenin was in command with close to triple the chips of his nearest rival and almost a third of the chips in play. He used this stack to good effect in the early stages, with Orpaz also using aggression to close the gap to the Russian.

There would be two doubles from Jonas Ten Cate through Bystrenin that would clip his wings somewhat, and when Orpaz shoved from under the gun with pocket sixes, Garcia couldn’t believe his luck when he looked down at pocket aces. They, of course, held, and we had yet another monster chip lead deep in the Main Event.

This time there would be no throwing it away. Garcia would eliminate three of the remaining four players — including both 888poker team members (pictured) — and close it out shortly before midnight local time.

The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas has a champion in the Texas Senate

The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas has a champion in the state Senate.

Senate Joint Resolution 30, sponsored by Sen. Roland Gutierrez, is a bill that seeks a state gaming compact with the tribal organization in order to secure its position within the state.

The move comes on the heels of a spate of political announcements indicating support for commercial gambling in Texas under state law.

Under federal law, the three sovereign gaming entities in Texas are on equal footing. They are Speaking Rock Entertainment Center in El Paso, Naskila Gaming in Livingston, and Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas

Kickapoo is the only enterprise of the three that has been allowed to flourish unmolested. The casino origins are recorded in the semi-fictional movie, “Casino Jack”. The enterprise is asking to be able to offer any form of gambling that occurs within 200 miles of the current casino and to not pay more than 3% taxes on the net win.

The simple request will task lawmakers with constitutional questions that are easily answered.

Bipartisan Call For Commercial Gambling in Texas

Both gubernatorial candidates expressed support for a citizen’s initiative on the issue. Both Beto O’Rourke and Gov. Abbott spoke in support of citizen-driven approval.

Democrats

A bill filed before the start of the session told the public that change was coming. Senate Joint Resolution 17 asked lawmakers to create a gambling commission, Carol Alvarado broke the ice.

Republicans

House Speaker Dade Phelan has indicated he’s totally okay with letting the people decide.

The Gutierrez bill states: “If, after January 1, 2024, this state by general law or constitutional amendment authorizes video lottery terminals, slot machines, or other forms of gaming not otherwise authorized before that date within 200 miles of the boundary of the reservation of the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas near Eagle Pass, Texas, the tribe is authorized to offer the same types of games or devices as authorized under that law or amendment at a location designated by the tribe.

“A tax or fee may not be imposed on the tribe in an amount that exceeds the amount of a tax or fee imposed on the operators of other gaming facilities in this state.”
